Why some major artists are suddenly canceling shows, and in some cases entire tours

A series of tour cancellations and changes by big-name artists has sparked questions about whether the post-pandemic live music boom could be cooling, as consumer spending fatigue meets elevated ticket prices.

On Friday, Jennifer Lopez announced she was canceling her 2024 tour , citing a desire to spend more time with her family. Meanwhile, the Black Keys announced they were abandoning a stadium tour in favor of a series of shows at smaller venues.

Both tours had recently become the subject of social media fodder, namely screenshots showing empty venues at select tour dates. (NBC News could could not directly verify their authenticity.)

Silhouettes of people enjoying a concert

Indeed, some of the evidence of a slowdown is anecdotal. SeatGeek said in an email that the average resale ticket price to attend a summer concert is down to $213 from $257 around this time last year. The company suggested some of the decline could be attributed to the absence of megatours on par with Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” and Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” outings last year.

For artists whose popularity has crescendoed, there appears to be plenty of demand — and high prices. The average resale price for Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” tour is $571, and the next-highest is $409 to see Morgan Wallen, according to SeatGeek data first reported by Axios .

Many of those tours are being sold through Ticketmaster and its parent Live Nation. And prior to facing landmark accusations that it is a monopoly , a claim it denies, Live Nation reported its biggest first quarter ever, with $3.8 billion in revenues. Its concerts business alone was up 26% to $2.9 billion, while “estimated fans” globally were up more than 20%, and up 42% in North America.

Yet official government data points to the makings of a return to a more normal pace for live music event sales after a post-pandemic boom. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last month that movie and concert admissions prices climbed just 3.4% year over year through April, the lowest reading since 2021 and the second-consecutive month showing a slowdown.

Dave Clark, editor of Ticket News, which tracks the live entertainment industry, said the period of explosive live music growth following pandemic reopenings may in hindsight be seen as an aberration: People were simply more eager — and more financially able — to go to as many shows as they could after months cooped up indoors.

This year, Clark said, a reckoning may be emerging.

“The days where there was enough demand to sell out arenas at top dollar just isn’t there in this live events economy — outside of people like Taylor Swift who can sell whatever they want wherever they want,” he said.

At a time when many consumers are struggling to pay for basic necessities, he said, “people are seeing some of the prices they’re asking and just saying, ‘Hard pass.’”

Another factor may be a supply issue, Clark added: too many acts trying to tour at once, or too many times. In the pre-streaming era, bands would go on tour as a way of marketing an album. These days, he said, it’s reversed, since the returns on recorded music have shrunk dramatically.

“Now they’re making records to sell the tour,” he said. “That paradigm has a lot to do with it. It’s just a very overloaded market.”

The Black Keys did just release a new album, and its debut single hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in March.

Still, the rock duo announced it would cancel and reschedule its summer touring plans, switching from arenas to other venues that provide a more “intimate experience,” according to the band. The new dates have not yet been announced.

The Black Keys aren’t the only group that may be falling victim to costly concert fatigue.

Pop-rock band 311 announced it had canceled upcoming European tour dates due to the “rising costs of touring overseas,” which made completing certain portions of the tour “unfeasible.”

Other stars including Pink and Justin Timberlake have also recently canceled specific show dates, while the Jonas Brothers recently postponed their upcoming European tour , though none officially cited financial concerns as reasons for doing so.

“I think with all that competition for fan dollars, it was obviously natural that some artists were going to lose,” said Bill Werde, director of the Syracuse University Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries.

There are still plenty of large-scale tours planned for this summer that, so far, appear to be unaffected by flagging demand. Hootie & the Blowfish have 48 dates booked this year, while Dave Matthews Band is slated for 34. Other top acts hitting the road include Maroon 5, Zac Brown Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kenny Chesney and Chris Stapleton.

But experts say recent economic trends in the live-music industry, especially the type of consolidation the Justice Department is now targeting, have translated into fewer smaller-sized venues.

That’s made it more difficult for a given tour date to make financial sense for the artist, venue and promoter.

“Some shows, they can’t afford to drop prices; they can’t afford to wait to try to sell out the rest of the building,” Clark said.

If there is uncertainty about all stakeholders being able to at least break even, he said, the show might get canceled.

Such realities have collided with a more circumspect concertgoer. Brittney D’Mello, a 23-year-old K-pop fan from New Jersey who works in corporate marketing, posted to X about her frustrations with the current touring landscape.

“The tickets are too expensive,” D’Mello said. “There’s only a SMALL amount of people (10%) that will spend $500+ on vip/floor/premium,” she said. “The rest of us have budgets and won’t spend $100 on nosebleeds,” she said, referring to seats that are typically the farthest away from the stage.

“Everyone is touring this year … and we only have money for 2-3 concerts MAX,” she added.

In a follow-up interview with NBC News, D’Mello said she simply decided to cap her concert budget.

“I will only go see two artists that are my tried-and-true favorite artists,” she said. “But I won’t be casually going to concerts anymore. And after going to concerts twice, I think that’s where I stop.”

The Eras Tour is a celebration of all 10 of the studio albums Swift has released since 2006. The massively successful tour has raked in over $1 billion . But with the launch of a new album era, Swift has been incorporating Tortured Poets into the tour for a section dubbed, “Female Rage: The Musical.”

“I wanted to tell you something that I’ve been so excited about for a really long time. I’ve been planning for ages and I finally get to tell you: I’m going back on tour,” Swift said on  GMA , announcing the news. “The tour is called the Eras tour and it’s a journey through all of the musical eras of my career.”

Jennifer Lopez's Rough Month: Cancels Tour Amid Shaky Sales And Rumors

Jennifer Lopez canceled her “This Is Me… Live” tour to spend more time with her family and children, she told fans in a statement , saying the decision was “necessary”—though the tour had been plagued by reports of low sales and multiple canceled dates.

Lopez said she was “heartsick and devastated” in a statement posted to her website Friday afternoon, telling fans she is “taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends” and that tickets would be refunded.

The tour had previously been marred by reports of poor ticket sales, with seven dates canceled earlier in March, reportedly citing a “logistical issue through the promoter.”

The cancellation comes amid a rough several months for Lopez, who has faced widespread speculation about the state of her marriage with Ben Affleck, and viral posts ridiculing her on social media.

The tour had also previously been rebranded from a promotional effort for her latest album, “This Is Me… Now”—which struggled to sell and only peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200—to a greatest hits tour spanning her entire catalog.

Lopez announced her tour, then titled “This Is Me… Now: The Tour,” in February, originally intended to support her latest album. But the album sold significantly less than her previous releases, selling just 14,000 copies in its debut week , just over a third of the 33,000 copies her previous album “A.K.A.” sold in 2014—which was her lowest sales week at the time. The new album was one part of a reportedly self-financed , $20 million effort that also included a film—“This Is Me... Now: A Love Story,” inspired by her relationship with Affleck—and a documentary. The trailer for the film went viral on social media because of its seemingly bizarre plot, though it was generally well received by critics with a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes . Lopez’s tour was set to span 30 cities in North America between June and August and would have been her first headlining tour in five years.

Key Background

Lopez has had a challenging month, with rumors swirling about the state of her marriage to Affleck, and social media users scrutinizing her past behavior. A years-old interview went viral in March in which she shared her bodega order she would purchase while growing up in the Bronx. “Ham and cheese on a roll with an orange drink — if you know you know — and a small bag of chips,” Lopez said, sparking confusion among social media users, particularly New Yorkers, who did not know what orange drink she was referring to. Lopez clarified in a Harper’s Bazaar interview this week that the orange drink “came in a little plastic container with a little bit of aluminum foil over it” and it “wasn’t called anything except orange drink or grape drink or whatever.” Some posts went viral on social media this week alleging tension between Lopez and her “Atlas” co-star Sterling K. Brown, including one interview clip where Brown says to Lopez: “You’re Puerto Rican? Get out of here,” and starts speaking Spanish while Lopez explains her “comfort meal” of rice and beans to the interviewer.

Lopez’s relationship with Affleck has been the subject of wide speculation in recent weeks as tabloid reports suggest their romance may be on the rocks. Less than two years after the couple married in July 2022 (and two decades after their first split in 2004), speculation grew following reports in May that the two were spotted together for the first time in six weeks, and that Lopez was seen looking for houses in Los Angeles without Affleck. Affleck also skipped the May 21 premiere of Lopez’s film “Atlas,” reportedly because he was filming “The Accountant 2.” Lopez shut down a reporter who asked about the state of her marriage at an “Atlas” press conference on May 22, telling him: “You know better than that.”

Lopez’s acting ventures have seen more success than her music lately: Her film “Atlas” debuted on top of last week’s Netflix chart with 28.2 million views in its first three days, one year after “The Mother” became one of Netflix’s all-time biggest hits (though critics reviewed both films poorly).

How to buy Taylor Swift tickets: Eras Tour dates and prices compared

Taylor Swift's reign continues as she ramps up for the next leg of The Eras Tour. The singer-songwriter will kick off the European portion of her world tour in Paris in May, which will continue throughout the summer. From there, she'll return to North America to tour Canada and a few remaining US cities in the fall. If you're hoping to attend, we've compiled all of the details of The Eras Tour, including how to get Taylor Swift tour tickets.

Swift's Eras Tour has taken the world by storm since March 2023. The three-plus-hour tour features hits from each of Swift's album eras, from "Lover" to her Grammy Award-winning "Midnights." Each show also features surprise songs and occasional guests, so fans never quite know what they're in for. Swift released her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," in April, so the Swiftie hype will continue through the summer.

Getting tickets has become its own battle and many fans have waited hours in the Ticketmaster queue to hopefully snag some seats, if they could get a presale ticket code in the first place. While Swift continues to extend the tour, including new US dates, tickets remain hard to come by.

Below, we've put together a guide on everything to know about The Eras Tour, including the tour schedule, ticket purchasing details, resale ticket prices, and the concert film streaming options . You can also peruse resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

Taylor Swift international tour dates

The Eras Tour international dates resumed on May 9 in Paris. The European tour will run until August 20 in London. UK prices are listed in pounds, and start times vary from city to city. Multiple shows have age restrictions for younger kids and specifics on seating and adult accompaniment. A few venues check that a ticketholder's ID matches the name on the tickets. US dates start in October and can be found under the following table.

Taylor Swift North American tour dates

The Eras tour will return to the US on October 18 in Miami. In addition to the Miami shows, Swift will perform multiple dates in New Orleans and Indianapolis. On November 14, Swift will head to Canada for several shows in Toronto and Vancouver. All North American shows start at 7 p.m. local time.

How to buy tickets for Taylor Swift's 2024 tour

Original standard tickets for Taylor Swift's 2024 sold out long ago for both international and domestic dates. All US tickets and many international tickets were sold through Ticketmaster , although select international locations used different services.

Tickets for most dates are available on resale websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats . These are generally higher-priced than the originals, which are no longer available. Keep in mind that some countries have rules regarding reselling tickets.

On StubHub, UK tour dates come with a note that ticket terms don't permit resale through unauthorized channels and might not be valid for entry. If this ends up being the case, StubHub notes that its FanProtect Guarantee will cover purchasers.

How much are Taylor Swift tickets?

Ticket prices vary by date and location. International resale tickets tend to be a bit cheaper than US resale tickets. It's worth noting that some of the cheapest tickets have restricted views.

StubHub's cheapest European tickets ranged from $190 (Madrid, Spain, on May 29) to £954 (London, England on August 19). The latter is around $1,200 in USD. The lowest prices for most shows are around $200 to $1,000. On Vivid Seats , the cheapest tickets for these dates go for $278 and $963, respectively.

When it comes to North American shows, the cheapest StubHub tickets range from $1,447 (Vancouver, Canada, on December 7) to $2,520 (Indianapolis, Indiana on November 2). Most of the cheapest tickets are priced between $1,500 and $2,250. On Vivid Seats, the cheapest Taylor Swift tickets on these dates start at $1,368 and $2,227, respectively. The two resale vendors generally have similarly priced offerings, but this varies from show to show.

Who is opening for Taylor Swift's tour?

Taylor Swift has a variety of opening acts, from up-and-coming singers to established groups. Opening acts vary by date. For the European leg of the tour, Paramore will open for Swift. In the US and Canada, Gracie Abrams will be the opening act.

Will Taylor Swift add more dates to the Eras Tour?

Taylor Swift has already added additional stops to her tour due to popular demand, including her US tour dates this fall. She also added additional dates to some of her European city stops, including bonus performances in France and the United Kingdom, among other locations. It's unknown whether Swift will end up adding even more tour dates, but by the end of the upcoming US leg she will have been touring for almost two years, so fans shouldn't be surprised if she takes a break.

Will The Tortured Poets Department be a part of the Eras Tour?

It's good news for fans of "The Tortured Poets Department," Swift's new album that dropped on April 19, 2024. Swift is incorporating several of the new tracks into the Eras Tour, as evidenced by the first shows of her European leg. "The Tortured Poets Department" songs currently featured on tour include "But Daddy I Love Him," "So High School," "Down Bad," "Fortnight," "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?," "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," and "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart."

Since the Eras Tour is already pretty long, this means that Swift is also cutting down a few songs from past Eras that previously made the tour setlist. The songs that were removed from the setlist include "The Archer," "Long Live," "The 1," "The Last Great American Dynasty," "'Tis the Damn Season," and "Tolerate It."

Where can I stream The Eras Tour concert film?

If you'd rather watch The Eras Tour from home, you could always stream it on Disney+. Check out everything you need to know about streaming The Eras Tour concert film in our guide .

Note: Certain services and regions prohibit the resale of tickets. Business Insider does not endorse or condone the illegal reselling of tickets, and entry into an event is at the venue's discretion.

Jennifer Lopez Cancels Summer Tour

The singer and actress said she was “heartsick and devastated” about the decision, which comes on the heels of a hit Netflix movie and persistent rumors about her marriage.

Jennifer Lopez announced on Friday that she has canceled her “This Is Me … Live” summer tour. In a message on her website she said she was “heartsick and devastated” about the decision.

“Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary,” she continued, promising her fans that they’d be “together again.”

An accompanying statement from Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster, said that “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” and that tickets bought through Ticketmaster would be refunded automatically.

The tour, scheduled for arenas across the country, appeared to be struggling with ticket sales; earlier this year, a handful of dates had been canceled and several shows appeared to have a number of unsold seats, Variety reported in March.

The cancellation comes during a time when Lopez, 54, has been in the spotlight for both her work and her personal life. She currently stars in the sci-fi action thriller “Atlas,” which has been the No. 1 film on Netflix in the United States since its debut last week.

And in February, she released an expansive, ambitious project, which she had poured $20 million of her own money into. It included a studio album, “ This Is Me … Now ”; an accompanying musical film, “ This Is Me … Now: A Love Story ”; and a making-of documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” which stars her husband, the actor and director Ben Affleck, 51. The pair also appeared together in an ad for Dunkin’ Donuts that debuted during this year’s Super Bowl.

Despite the recent collaborations, rumors have been swirling for weeks that their marriage is in trouble , with tabloids offering reports almost daily on the state of their union. Lopez and Affleck were famously minted as “Bennifer” when they dated from about 2002 to 2004, a period that included a brief engagement. They reunited in 2021 and married in July 2022.

A representative for Lopez did not immediately respond on Friday to questions about the tour cancellation or the reports about her marriage to Affleck.

Jennifer Lopez cancels 2024 tour This Is Me: 'Completely heartsick and devastated'

tour concert ticket sales

Jennifer Lopez has canceled her summer North American tour , which was to be her first in five years, weeks before she was scheduled to go on the road.

The pop star made the announcement Friday in her On The JLo fan newsletter.

"Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour 'THIS IS ME...LIVE' is canceled, citing ... 'Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,'" the newsletter reads.

The statement was followed by a personal note , "A Special Message to My JLovers OnTheJLo."

"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," Lopez wrote. "I love you all so much. Until next time..."

USA TODAY has reached out to Live Nation for comment.

Lopez's first show of the tour had been slated for June 26 in Orlando, Florida.

This Is Me... Live announcement comes after seven tour dates were canceled

The announcement comes weeks after several shows on the tour were canceled without explanation. According to Ticketmaster, Lopez's scheduled performances in Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta; Houston; Cleveland and Tampa, Florida would no longer take place.

"Unfortunately, the event organizer has had to cancel your event," the message for those pages reads.

This is Me...Live was a 30-date arena tour that was going to feature Lopez's chart-breakers and classic hits from her discography, like songs "On The Floor," "Let's Get Loud" and "Jenny from the Block." Her most recent tour in 2019, the It's My Party tour, sold out venues across the country.

The tour was in support of her new album, “This is Me … Now,” which released in February. The record was accompanied by an Amazon Prime musical movie, “ This is Me … Now: A Love Story ."

Speaking to USA TODAY earlier this year about "This is Me ... Now" possibly being her swan song, Lopez said, "This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love."

"I’ve been on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” she said. “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”'

Lopez's announcement also comes amid widespread speculation about her marriage of nearly two years to Ben Affleck.

After various media reports suggested Lopez and Affleck may no longer be living together, the Hollywood A-List couple has been increasingly under the microscope, with media prying over their whereabouts and whether both are still wearing their rings.

On May 16, Lopez and Affleck were photographed together for the first time in over a month, with each spotted wearing their respective wedding rings.

The two were engaged to each other twice: first in 2002 then again in 2021. The couple got married in a late-night ceremony in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022, which Lopez called "the best possible wedding we could have imagined."

This is the second marriage for Affleck and the fourth for Lopez.

‘Heartsick’ Jennifer Lopez Cancels Ambitious Stadium Tour

By Eve Batey

Jennifer Lopez promotes Atlas

Jennifer Lopez , the polymath whose acting, directing, and musical aspirations have been on overdrive in 2024, is finally taking a break. After a year that saw the release of her self-financed Amazon movie/visual album This Is Me…Now: A Love Story and its accompanying documentary/document of her marriage to Ben Affleck , The Greatest Love Story Never Told , the star has called off the third part of the “This is Me” plan. In a statement posted to her website Friday, Lopez announced that the multi-city concert tour, which was most recently titled “This Is Me... Live,” has been canceled, and direct ticket purchasers will be fully refunded.

After tapping on an “Important Announcement” link, visitors to onthejlo.com are able to view a message reading “Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour ‘THIS IS ME…LIVE’ is canceled, citing … ‘Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends.'" “For those who purchased through Ticketmaster, tickets will automatically be refunded – there is nothing further fans need to do," the announcement continued. "For those who purchased via third-party resale sites such as SeatGeek, StubHub, VividSeats, etc. – please reach out to your point purchase for more details.”

Via a separate button entitled “Special Message,” website visitors were told "I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary,"

The message, which is presumably written in Lopez's voice, continues: "I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…"

Pundits were quick to link the mention of time with family to ongoing speculation about the state of the Affleck/Lopez union. The couple has only been seen together a few times in recent months, and at a media event to promote Atlas , Lopez's recently released Netflix film, a question about the couple's less-than-two-year-old marriage was met with rebukes.

“Is your divorce with Ben Affleck real?" asked a reporter at a Mexico City event to promote the streaming sci-fi film, which has a brutal 19 percent score on critical site Rotten Tomatoes.

“These rumors?” the reporter continued. “What is the truth?” Before Lopez could respond, co-star Simu Liu jumped into the fray, snapping “Okay, we’re not doing that.”

Lopez followed up with chiding words of her own, saying, “You know better than that," to the thus far unnamed reporter.

Given that and the avalanche of headlines dissecting body language, wedding ring placement, and the couple's individual appearances, many assumed that relationship ills were the cause of the tour cancellation. But it's worth noting that the tour has been struggling for months: in March, back when the concert series was called “This Is Me… Now,” weak ticket sales prompted cancellations of stops in Cleveland, Nashville, Raleigh, Atlanta, Tampa, New Orleans, and Houston, Variety reported at the time .

Significant numbers of tickets to the tour's remaining 30 shows remained unsold as of early April, and later that month, the tour's name was quietly changed to “This Is Me… Live | The Greatest Hits."

According to Variety , “sources close to Lopez insisted that the tour was not being canceled due to poor ticket sales,” but did not specify a different reason, and representatives for Lopez have not responded to Vanity Fair 's request for comment as of publication time. A look at seating charts from a sample of the planned tour dates between June and August showed a notable number of available seats as of Friday, May 31.

Regardless of the reason, the cancellation is a muffled end to what began as a splashy “surrealistic magical odyssey” that cost Lopez at least $20 million to mount. But as VF 's Richard Lawson noted in his review of the film version of This Is Me... Now , if nothing else, the movie underscores that “Lopez’s true calling is as but a humble movie star.” Perhaps the sales for her planned tour convinced the actor/dancer/ entrepreneur of that, too.

Jennifer Lopez Tour Canceled Amid Low Ticket Sales, Rumored Marriage Trouble

Jennifer Lopez is canceling her This Is Me…Live tour amid poor ticket sales and rumored marriage trouble with husband, Ben Affleck.

"Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends," reps for Live Nation confirmed to Associated Press.

Lopez, 54, released her own statement via her OntheJLo website and newsletter, writing, "I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn't do this if I didn't feel that it was absolutely necessary."

She went on, “"I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…"

The This Is Me…Live tour was set to be the Bronx native’s fifth concert tour, and was originally planned in support of her ninth studio album,   This Is Me… Now . The tour was changed to focus on her greatest hits following lackluster support of the album itself. Unfortunately, ticket sales never quite picked-up, with Page Six recently reporting that Lopez’s proposed 90-date residency at the MGM in Las Vegas is in jeopardy due to poor tour ticket sales. The announcement of the tour’s cancellation will certainly inform the ultimate decision.

The cancelation also comes amid reported marriage trouble for the star and husband, Ben Affleck. According to a source at People, their relationship "is not in the best place at the moment," partially due to their differing personalities. While Lopez is a open-book extrovert, Affleck is more low-key, and prefers to keep their private life private.

"She likes to open her heart to her fans and to the world," a music source told People of Lopez. "He is more introspective and private. This has been difficult day-to-day."

Lopez recently shot down rumors of a martial rift during a press appearance for Netflix film, Atlas.

"Your divorce with Ben Affleck is real? What is the truth?" asked an attendee, with Atlas co-star Simu Liu attempting to shut it down with, “OK, we're not doing that."

Lopez then added, "You know better than that." Check out the moment below.

Jennifer Lopez Variety Cover Story

For a variety of reasons, one of the biggest stories in entertainment this year has been the precarious state of Jennifer Lopez ’s “This Is Me… Now” tour, which was finally put out of its misery yesterday.

Popular on Variety

Just a few days earlier, another major act canceled their own overly ambitious North American tour that was scheduled to hit many of the same arenas that J-Lo’s was — the male rock duo the Black Keys. After that news broke, people asked what that said about the state of the touring business.

But when J. Lo canceled her tour just days later, people asked what it says about her.

As a society, why do we do that?

Broadly speaking, the reasons for both cancellations are the same: An artist past their commercial prime makes an overly optimistic projection about the response to their new project, gets it wrong, and pays the price — as do their partners in the enterprise, from promoters and venues down to dancers and truck drivers, because it takes a village to put on a tour of that size, and literally hundreds of people’s livelihoods are affected by those cancelations (which is something conveniently forgotten in the thinly veiled glee much of the public seems to take in such missteps).

Granted, the pop audience that J-Lo is targeting is very different from the more-loyal, less-fickle rock fans the Black Keys were aiming at. The pop world that J-Lo inhabits has the attention span of a smart fish and is infamously unforgiving of perceived transgressions, which can span from intentional factors — like a romantic partner who fans decide they don’t like — to unintended ones like, say, a multifaceted, self-absorbed autobiographical project by someone who famously is not the world’s kindest or most gracious superstar. For all her Bronx toughness and swagger, J-Lo has always been a pop artist and she knows that game and everything that comes with it.

But fame and power put people at a remove from reality, and it’s ultimately irrelevant whether everyone in her orbit also thought all this project and tour were a great idea, or whether no one dared to say, “Hey, after the disastrous failure of ‘Gigli’” — the dreadful 2003 Affleck-Lopez film that not only destroyed the pair as a commercial property, but also helped tank the first era of their relationship — “maybe reviving Bennifer as a commercial enterprise isn’t a great idea?” The end result was the same: a canceled tour and a stiff album. Artists make similar miscalculations every year.

Yet the online venom and hateration that has surrounded the failure of this enterprise has been epic in scale. The term schadenfreude — a combination of the German nouns Schaden, meaning “damage” or “harm,” and Freude, meaning “joy,” per Merriam-Webster — means taking pleasure, often illogical pleasure, in others’ misfortune. And while men certainly are the victims of it — does anyone remember Martin Shkreli and his unusually punchable face ? — society certainly seems to reserve the worst of its venom for powerful, successful, talented women.

It’s a matter of public record that women’s rights are under ferocious attack, from Iran, Afghanistan and Russia to the United States and our arguably corrupt Supreme Court, multiple state governments and even Benedictine College’s commencement . But the hate isn’t coming exclusively from men. At a certain point, we decide we don’t like a public figure anymore without really knowing — or at least without consciously thinking about — why.

Except subconsciously, it’s probably not that deep. Sometimes we just don’t like or get tired of someone’s face (cf. Shkreli, who never had a chance), sometimes we resent their success, sometimes we also resent their happiness, or at least their seeming flaunting of it. In the wider public eye, J-Lo seems to have run afoul of the latter two, and the rumors that she and Affleck may be separating after less than two years of marriage seem an almost inevitable final act before a (probably equally inevitable) redemption chapter, after everyone finally realizes how unfair they were (cf. Britney Spears).

This is a road that Beyonce also went down at the peak of her career. She (apparently) shared the challenges that her own marriage was facing — and intensified her already-deep connection with her audience — in the lyrics of her galvanizing “Lemonade” album and tour… but then made a sort of happy-ending follow-up with her 2018 duet album with husband Jay-Z, “Everything Is Love,” which landed well initially but in retrospect is self-indulgent, treacly and awkwardly self-congratulatory: It’s just hard to have much empathy for two near-billionaires singing about how difficult it was coming through the fire. Their ruling status — and the fact that people are genuinely afraid of their fanbases — enabled them to dodge the storm that usually follows such hubris.

J-Lo, as we’re seeing, hasn’t dodged those bullets. At 54, she’s at a tricky point in a pop star career: Hit singles for artists at that age are as rare as Bigfoot sightings — Cher’s “Believe” and Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam,” the two main examples that come to mind, were released more than a quarter-century apart — and only generationally defining stars with enormous catalogs of hits, like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel can tour arenas into retirement age. What’s missing from that category? Women. Most of the top-grossing female touring artists — Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Pink — are under 45. The only one who isn’t, Madonna, at 65 played to some middling audiences on her just-completed, mostly triumphant “Celebration” tour. She’s weathered all of the above storms — and then some — and come out on top, but it’s taken hurricane-force, once-in-a-generation level of determination (and probably has taken quite a personal toll as well).

Variety pursued the reports of J. Lo’s poor ticket sales aggressively, not for reasons of schadenfreude but because such stories are important in our corner of the media world, and it’s a sad fact of our business that bad news gets a lot more clicks than good news. Her fans swarmed on us, which comes with the turf, but the stories were hugely successful. As it does every time schadenfreude piles up on a female public figure, I was reminded of something: During the heyday of Lena Dunham’s TV series “Girls,” there was a video meme — or whatever passed for a meme in 2012 — of young women making comical, snarky opinions about show, with one of them saying, “I’ve never seen it… but I think I don’t like it.”

It was a joke, but still, that statement seems like a sadly perfect distillation of the amount of thought, let alone logic, that goes into the kind of hateration that J. Lo and so many other female public figures are receiving right now. It’s also not hard to imagine that syndrome playing a major role in many other successful women being brought down a peg after a majority of people decide they just don’t like her, not least the defeat of Hillary Clinton by her unapologetically misogynist opponent in 2016.

J. Lo is a great artist and she will be fine, and she’s clearly tough enough to weather all of this. But why should she have to? There’s obviously more going on here than just a canceled tour, and it does make one wonder whether the guilty pleasure of schadenfreude and our role in furthering it is a problem that goes beyond a few “harmless” clicks.
