The Weeknd Adds 2023 Tour Dates

By Rob Arcand

Just one day after bringing the first leg of his After Hours Til Dawn Tour to a close, the Weeknd has announced even more tour dates to come in the new year. The second leg begins in June 2023, and the trek runs through Europe and Latin America. Check out the Weeknd’s schedule below.

The Weeknd released his fifth studio album, Dawn FM , in January. The album was withheld from consideration for the 2023 Grammy Awards , continuing a boycott that started in 2021 after the Weeknd’s previous album, After Hours , failed to receive any Grammy nominations. Despite the boycott, the Weeknd won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his contributions to the Kanye West song “Hurricane.”

The Weeknd will embark on the second leg of his After Hours Til Dawn Tour in spring 2023, playing shows in Europe and Latin America territories.

The 27-date stadium tour begins June 10, 2023, at Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

General on-sale tickets start this Friday, Dec. 2, at 12 p.m. local time.

Kaytranada and Mike Dean retain their North American duties as special guests on select dates.

The Weeknd’s upcoming 2023 dates follow his sold-out North American After Hours Til Dawn Tour , which recently concluded with two nights in Los Angeles.

The tour will continue to support his 2022 album Dawn FM , released Jan. 6 via XO/Republic Records. He quickly responded with an expanded edition, Dawn FM: Alternative World .

Dawn FM featured previously shared tracks “ Take My Breath ” and “ Sacrifice .” Cliqua directed the visual for both tracks.

Speaking of “Sacrifice,” Chxrry22 , signed to XO Records, recently released her version .

Throughout the year, The Weeknd dished out alternate versions of Dawn FM tracks, including “ Out of Time ,” “How Do I Make You Love Me?” and “ Best Friend ,” to name a few.

Kaytranada remixed variations for the first track, while Summer Walker joined The Weeknd for the latter standout.

The Weeknd earned two nominations at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, including Male Artist of 2022 and Album of 2022 ( Dawn FM ).

Music aside, The Weeknd has a new series coming to HBO and HBO Max titled The Idol . It’s described as “the sleaziest love story in all Hollywood.” (The trailer can be viewed above.)

Briefly touching on Kaytranada, he recently released “ Twin Flame ” with Anderson .Paak in August. He contributed production to Joyce Wrice ‘s recent project, Motive , released in October.

Kaytranada is nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Recording (“ Intimated ” featuring H.E.R.) at the 65th Grammy Awards. The track appears on his 2021 EP of the same name.

This review might not be completely objective as Abel has been my favourite singer for a few years now. However, I can definitely admit the Starboy tour date in Paris was the best pop concert I've been to this year. Even though some songs could have been put out of the tracklist, he mostly sang his catchiest songs of his career, no matter the era. He has great, or should I say, tremendous energy as he continuously sang twenty-something songs with no pause in between. He has no trouble reaching high notes live, his voice sounding even more heavenly in real life. That night, he invited Travis Scott on stage who pumped up the crowd more than him, which is a shame and showcases very well his lack of success and recognition in France, yet, in a sold out stadium. Most people actually didn't even know his real name or the lyrics of his songs ! I would recommend any "real fan" who has known him for a while or who likes his last album a lot to go to a Starboy tour date. I promise you, you won't regret it.

elisa-gyn’s profile image

The concert was absolutely stunning. A starship was used and the lights were coordinated very well. Abel sang amazingly in person and I loved jumping up and down screaming with other members of the audience while he sang. The concert was truly magical and I enjoyed every second Abel stood on stage.

As for the other singers who appeared on stage, I was very satisfied with their singing as well. They did an amazing job and captured the entire audience. In between Abel's music, the other singers such as Lil Uzi and 6lack played their hits on stage and the whole crowd became even more alive. If I the concert played out any other way, I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as this concert.

Elsewhere in The Weeknd news, Abel Tesfaye’s “Can’t Feel My Face” was officially certified Diamond last week . This is the artist’s fourth Diamond single (following “The Hills,” “Starboy,” and “Blinding Lights”), making him the third solo artist and fourth artist overall to reach the achievement. The single is from The Weeknd’s second studio album Beauty Behind the Madness and was his first single to reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

As Bianca Gracie explains in her feature on the track , “‘Can’t Feel My Face’ may have been the third single picked from Beauty Behind the Madness , but it remains the biggest. Gone was the murky, chilling production from The Weeknd’s mixtape days. For “Can’t Feel My Face,” The Weeknd called upon pop music’s legendary hitmaker Max Martin and Ali Payami (best known for his Grammy-winning work on Taylor Swift’s 1989). The two producers created a bouncy, vibrant melody that drew inspiration from one of The Weeknd’s biggest heroes, Michael Jackson .”

“‘He’s everything to me, so you’re going to hear it in my music,’ The Weeknd told the LA Times in 2016. “ Off The Wall was the album that inspired me to sing. It helped me find my [voice] … “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough,” I kept singing that, and I found my falsetto.”

Billboard Canada 2024 Power Players List Revealed

When it comes to music, Canada punches above its weight. Artists like Drake, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Alanis Morissette have spent the last few decades among the biggest in the world – a feat for a country that pales in population to its neighbour down south. In boardrooms, too, Canadians are well represented in positions of influence.

That’s evident in Billboard Canada’s 2024 Power Players list, the first expansion of the Power Players and Power 100 to Canada. The list features music executives who are working on the world’s biggest tours, managing the industry’s most valuable song catalogues, and breaking artists from all over the world.

One of the country’s biggest strengths when it comes to music is cultural fluency and a seemingly innate ability to globalize. As Punjabi music, Kpop, Latin music, Afrobeats and more global genres become ever more popular, Canadians are ready to both export talent across borders and capitalize on trends others might not even know about yet.

This year’s set of submissions and nominations were extremely competitive. The Power Players list recognizes achievements across the board but highly prizes impact in Canada and breakthroughs by Canadians on the international and world stage, especially those that can be clearly measured and substantiated.

We are celebrating Billboard Canada Power Players with a special event on Sunday, June 2 at the CN Tower. There are still a few tickets available here .

Arthur fogel.

When it comes to big blockbuster tours, Arthur Fogel is the guy. The Canadian-born industry icon practically invented them. It was a big year for record-setting live music events, and other than Taylor Swift, Fogel’s fingerprints were on most of them: Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, U2’s now-iconic opening residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas, Madonna’s Celebration Tour and its 1.6 million-person topper in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “For me, it was an incredible year,” Fogel says in Billboard Canada ’s Q&A . “To do all of those within a year was incredibly challenging and stressful, but each of them in their own way was greatly successful.” For fellow Canadian exec, Live Nation’s CEO Michael Rapino, the year might be stressful for a different reason: the U.S. Department of Justice’s just-filed antitrust lawsuit , accusing the company of anticompetitive business practices and a proposed separation from Ticketmaster. When it comes to power, Live Nation might just be too powerful.

Kristen Burke

Major labels in Canada have a tendency to be a little bit risk-averse, betting on legacy artists or piggybacking off the success of their American counterparts. Recently, Warner Music Canada has been the exception. Since she became President in 2021, Kristen Burke has been the only female head of a major label in Canada, and it’s already been an eventful tenure. They’ve moved their headquarters into the heart of Toronto at the splashy new retail/business development The Well, which has space for content creation, recording and live music to host industry, artist and community-centric events. They’ve also launched 91 North Records, a joint venture with Warner Music India to support South Asian artists and create “a bridge between the East and West that exists to elevate artists creating culturally impactful and innovative music.” The Punjabi Wave is one of the biggest and most influential stories in Canadian music right now, and the label is at the forefront. Karan Aujla (who is signed directly to Warner Music Canada) has over 1 billion global streams with his album Making Memories and over 445 million streams and 2 billion social views with his single “Softly.” He also set a Billboard Canadian Albums chart record for a Punjabi artist and capped it off with a TikTok Fan Choice Juno Award . The bet paid off.

Wassim “Sal” Slaiby

The Weeknd is a major hometown success story, and so is his manager. The Weeknd is arguably the biggest artist out of Canada right now, and one who continues to make Canadian chart history . Wassim “Sal” Slaiby has been with him nearly every step of the way, and also manages Canadian rappers Belly and Nav. He’s also been involved with many American chart-toppers, including Brandy, Bryson Tiller and Doja Cat. With his SALXCO company, he’s bridged the gap between Middle Eastern & North African music and North America, including Elyanna, the first singer to perform a set at Coachella entirely in Arabic . Her hit single “Ana Lahale," which boasts 23 million Spotify streams , features Lebanese-Canadian singer Massari, who is head of A&R for Universal Music Arabic where Slaiby is at the helm. He gives back through his work with Global Citizen and, though he’s living large in Los Angeles, helps spark the next generation in the often-underserved Toronto community with a role on the board of HXOUSE , the XO-led artistic incubator on the waterfront.

Debra Rathwell

Debra Rathwell is the Executive Vice President of Global Touring and Talent at AEG Presents, one of the largest producers and promoters of live tours and music events in the world. Originally from Ottawa, like Fogel she’s a powerful exec working in concerts in the U.S. who came up through Canadian promotion in the ‘80s and ‘90s. She’s already had a career full of live shows doubling as cultural events like Woodstock ‘94 and ‘99 and TV shows like America’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance . But the last year has been nearly as eventful. AEG Presents, its subsidiaries and partner promoters grossed $2 billion from 7,639 shows reported to Billboard Boxscore — almost twice as many as Live Nation’s 4,263. That includes the end of Elton John’s epic Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which lasted half a decade. “It was an honor and labor of love to spend six years of my life with Elton John and all of the members of our close-knit team,” Rathwell says. “At the time of its completion, the FYBR Tour was the highest grossing tour of all time: 330 shows, 6 million tickets sold, grossing $939 million.” And through its partner Messina Touring Group, AEG has been working with Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour — which Billboard estimates grossed $906.1 million.

Golnar Khosrowshahi

Canadian-Iranian powerhouse Golnar Khosrowshahi might not be a household name, but she’s quietly one of the most influential music execs coming from this country (though she now spends as much time in New York). Reservoir has a diverse publishing catalogue that accounted for 10 Grammys at the most recent ceremony, including Joni Mitchell at Newport , the Canadian folk icon’s emotional return to the stage. Reservoir was responsible for bringing seminal hip-hop group De La Soul’s much-missed catalogue to streaming and back onto the charts in 2023 after acquiring the group’s back catalogue through their 2021 acquisition of legendary independent hip-hop label Tommy Boy Music — no easy feat. “Our team worked diligently alongside De La Soul for 18 months to clear the samples, prepare the music for streaming, and orchestrate a robust release plan,” Khosrowshahi says. “It was a privilege to share De La Soul’s long-awaited music with the fans, and also cultivate a whole new generation of listeners.” Since going public two years ago, Reservoir is the first female-founded and led publicly traded independent music company. It reported 13% revenue growth in 2023 and double digit organic growth in each quarter in 2024.

Jennifer Brown

With Jennifer Brown as CEO, SOCAN, the rights organization that collects and distributes publishing royalties for musicians and rights-holders, hit a major milestone in 2023: more than half a billion dollars in revenue . SOCAN makes sure that Canadian musicians and songwriters receive their share, so it is a crucial behind-the-scenes company for the most important people in music: the creators. On SOCAN and as Vice-Chair of the CISAC board of directors, Brown is an advocate for the protection and value of artists’ work. On the policy and advocacy side, Brown has been instrumental in the modernization of the Broadcasting Act to ensure digital platforms contribute to promotion of Canadian music. The result, the Online Streaming Act, could determine the future of CanCon . SOCAN is also urging the government to adopt transparency when it comes to AI and properly reward human rights-holders, another hot button issue in the industry.

Toronto Stadium was purpose-built as Canada hosted the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2007 and staged the final where Argentina emerged triumphant, with Sergio Aguero claiming the Golden Ball and Golden Boot.

The venue, which has an English Premier League-style roof canopy and steep stands on either end of the ground, played host to the climax of Canada’s campaign to reach the FIFA World Cup 2022™, when their ticket to Qatar was secured with victory over Jamaica.

That success ended Canada’s 36-year absence from the global showpiece, and extended their impressive record of having never lost a competitive match at Toronto Stadium, which will be welcoming FIFA tournaments back to the city having also hosted the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014.

Did you know? Did you know?

People who hail from Toronto are called Torontonians.

Toronto is the most-populous city in Canada, with north of 2.8million residents.

The world-famous CN Tower is based in the city. At 553 metres tall, it was the largest free-standing structure in the world until the Burj Khalifa was completed in 2009.

Hit music artists Drake, Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd all hail from Toronto, as well as world-renowned actors Jim Carrey, Keanu Reaves and Mike Myers.

Baseball legend Babe Ruth hit his first home run at Hanlan’s Point on Toronto Island. He would go on to hit more than 700 more during his Major League Baseball career.

In the 1600s, a Frenchman named Etienne Brule was sent to explore parts of the country when he came across the river and portage routes from the St. Lawrence to Lake Huron. The native Huron peoples had long called this area "Toronto," believed to mean "meeting place."

Toronto developed into the fourth-largest city in North America and the largest in Canada. It is a world leader in business, entertainment, technology and finance, and now boasts a hugely multicultural and diverse population.

The city is also famous for its sport. One-time MLS cup winners Toronto FC are the main footballing attraction, while the Toronto Blue Jays (baseball), Toronto Raptors (basketball) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (hockey) represent the city across some of the other major sporting leagues. Lacrosse, rugby and wrestling are also very popular.

Billboard Canada’s 2024 Power Players List Revealed

This week In Canada: the Power 100 expands to the Great White North, with Live Nation executive Arthur Fogel topping the list.

Canada’s No. 1 Power Player: Arthur Fogel

The industry icon behind many of the biggest world tours of the last year started out at a punk venue in Toronto.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour topped Billboard’s 2023 Boxscore list as the highest-grossing tour of the year and one of the biggest of all time. U2’s opening residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas redefined big-stage sound-and-vision spectacle and became the fastest-grossing residency in Boxscore history. And Madonna culminated her career-spanning Celebration Tour with a massive, record-setting concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, attended by more than 1.6 million people.

Arthur Fogel was instrumental in all of them.

Billboard’s 21 Under 21: See Who Made the 2024 List

Fogel is the Chairman of Global Music & President of Global Touring CEO of Global Touring at Live Nation. He’s stationed at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters, but he’s one of several high-powered Canadian executives in their boardroom. Michael Rapino , Live Nation’s President and CEO, is also from Canada.

And, Fogel notices, like they are on big stages, Canadians are overrepresented in some of the most important positions in the music industry.

“I don’t think the Canadian industry gets enough credit on any number of levels. If you look at the artists that have come out of Canada over a number of years and generations, it’s pretty incredible how much talent that has come out of a country this size,” Fogel says. “The same holds true for the business side.”

Record Store Crawl 2024: Busload of Vinyl Fans and Quarters of Change Usher in Return of Warner…

Shortlist announced for the billboard canada non-performing songwriter award.

Five impressive songwriters have been shortlisted for the inaugural  Billboard Canada Non-Performing Songwriter Award , presented by SOCAN.

These songwriters each had a banner year in 2023, penning memorable songs with indelible melodies that garnered Grammy nominations, top chart placements, and millions of streams.

They are recognized for their work as songwriters for other artists, making an impact from behind the scenes – a first for an award of this kind in Canada.

Here are the nominees, with the winner being announced at Billboard Canada’s Power Players event on June 2 at the CN Tower:

Elizabeth Lowell Boland

Lowell is a singer, songwriter and producer known for her collaborations with Madison Beer, Charli XCX, Tate McRae, Charlie Puth, Lennon Stella, Hailee Steinfeld, bülow, Lu Kala and many more. With two songs on Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed new album – the international smash “Texas Hold’em” and upcoming single “Bodyguard” – Lowell has become a trusted collaborator for the legendary artist. She also wrote “Blame Brett,” the breakout hit for Toronto band The Beaches.

Aaron Paris

Aaron Paris is a songwriter, record producer and composer from Toronto. Having worked with artists including Ariana Grande, Kanye West, Drake, DJ Khaled, Russ, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Kali Uchis, NAV, Charlotte Cardin and more, Aaron has built a strong international reputation as a musical composer and collaborator. In 2023, Aaron co-wrote over 70 major artist releases and received five Juno nominations and 2 Grammy nominations for songs he co-wrote.

Tobias Jesso Jr.

Tobias Jesso Jr. is a North Vancouver-born, L.A.-based songwriter and two-time Grammy-winner. In 2023, he earned the first-ever Grammy Award for Songwriter of The Year for his work on releases by Harry Styles, Adele, FKA Twigs, Orville Peck, King Princess, Diplo and Omar Apollo in addition to taking home Album of The Year for his contributions to Harry Styles’  Harry’s House . He was also a major contributor on Dua Lipa’s most recent album Radical Optimism co-writing on multiple tracks including the big single, “Houdini.”

Jeremy Fedryk

Jeremy Fedryk – a.k.a. Sarcastic Sounds – spent much of 2023 immersing himself in the budding folk-pop scene. The year was highlighted by his writing contribution to David Kushner’s international smash “Daylight,” which accumulated over 1 billion Spotify streams and reached multi-platinum status in every major market. His success continued with the release of Chance Pena’s “I am not who I was,” which has amassed over 170 million Spotify streams and reached the top 20 of Billboard’s alternative chart.

Ali Willa Milner

Fresh off a Grammy nomination for her work with The Knocks and Dragonette, Ali Willa Milner found herself part of six Juno nominations for her work in 2023. Her writing led to nominations with Rêve, Katie Tupper, and multiple nominations for Aysanabee who won two, including Songwriter Of The Year.

NHL

Canada vs. USA: Two fans forced to watch each country’s worst 2023 NHL playoff ads

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 03: Chandler Stephenson #20 of the Vegas Golden Knights and Aleksander Barkov #16 of the Florida Panthers battle for the face-off during the second period in Game One of the 2023 NHL Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena on June 03, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images)

Three years ago, with the NHL working their way through a very strange bubble postseason, an idea was born. This league and its broadcast partners love to bombard hapless viewers with the same awful commercials, over and over again. But those ads are different depending on which side of the border you’re on, meaning Canadians don’t get to see the ones that are driving Americans crazy, and vice versa.

So I found an American — Sean Gentille — and we agreed to force each other to watch our country’s three most annoying ads, and then react to them in real time. The concept was a hit, thanks to Jim Hughson’s hair, Tony the Tiger’s celly and the infamous Tara Tara earworm. People loved the resulting post , and pretty soon Sean and I were doing national media hits for some reason. We brought the idea back in 2021, featuring the Sportsnet life coach, Rupert the Turtle and a very real Oiler fan who thought Leon Draisaitl was the best in the league. More good times were had .

And then … nothing.

We took last year off. We considered doing that again this year. It’s not that we’re too busy (we are) or that we’ve run out of jokes (we have not). Something more shocking is going on.

For the last couple years, the ads … haven’t been that bad?

Oh, they haven’t been good . But most fans seem to agree that nothing has approached Tara Tara levels of awfulness. And the ads that are bad don’t seem to run quite as often as they used to.

Did … did we do that? Did the world’s biggest advertising firms see us making fun of them, and radically change the way they did business?

We can’t say for sure, so let’s just go ahead and assume that yes, that’s exactly what happened. And if so, we have a duty to keep doing the Lord’s work, if only so that society is never again plunged back to following our dreams into taxidermy.

We’re back, baby. Let’s see where this goes.

Pregame strategy

McIndoe: The first step in building a solid list of terrible ads is to reach out to the public, and this is where I ran into my first problem. When I tweeted out a call for nominations, one ad was the clear leader: That Rogers commercial where a coffee shop gives out a free cookie and we’re supposed to be inspired. That one really bothers people, to an almost comical degree. But tragically, Rogers seems to know this, because despite airing the ad constantly through the playoffs, they’ve managed to scrub any versions of it off of the internet. If I can’t show it to Sean, it’s of no use to us. Sorry, cookie haters. (But don’t go thinking you’re off the hook, Rogers.)

I considered making him watch one of those annoyingly obtuse yet uniquely Canadian drug ads, where they’re not allowed to say what the thing does , so it’s just catchy music and vague references. There’s the weekly exercise in the overwrought “Canada’s Got Talent” treacle. And of course, there are the dozens of gambling ads that have infested our hockey coverage over the last year. It’s almost impossible to pick the worst out of that bunch, although it’s fun to imagine the meeting where some executive said “You know who Canadian hockey fans love and respect? Chris Pronger!”

In the end, I went for three brands that have been all over our playoff coverage. My next problem was narrowing it down to just one ad each, which was tougher than it sounds. But this is important work, so I had to persevere.

Gentille: My strategy begins and ends with one thing: earworms. I ruined my guy’s life with the aforementioned Tara a couple years back — look at her go, then and forever — and I’m trying to do it again. “Find something that works, then run it into the ground” is a personal mantra.

That means a few otherwise solid contenders had to get the boot. The Pete Davidson “Breakfast With Peter” Taco Bell bit, combined with his Peacock show, have me legitimately worried about whatever buddy’s next step is going to be. Also, the performance by co-host Rhonda made the whole thing a little less unfunny, and there’s no earworm to speak of.

The last cut was the Amazon ad starring a young woman who, with the help of Queen and some conspicuous consumption, learns to love her unwanted upper-lip hair. Did you know Olivia Wilde directed that one? I didn’t until a bit before we wrote this, but I’ve never been less surprised in my life. Either way, sometime in early May, I heard “Cool Cat” at a Chipotle and almost broke into tears, but I’ve since healed.

Commercial No. 1

McIndoe: As always, we begin with a question: Kick or receive?

Gentille: I’ll watch the first one. I want you to watch the final one.

McIndoe: OK, then let me ask you a question before we begin. Are you familiar with the word “wah”?

Gentille: First thought is “wah” as in wah-wah pedals. Second is the sound Lucy makes when Ricky Ricardo forbids her from performing at The Babalu. Something tells me this isn’t a sincere question — or at least not an answerable one — so I’ll say no.

McIndoe: Good, because neither does anyone in Canada. Which is a tough break for one car company, which decided to make “wah” the focus of its entire identity for the last several months. Nobody understands why, but it means that every few ad breaks, we get to see something like this:

Gentille: My man is coming in hot, with a campaign centered around pure gibberish right out of the gate.

McIndoe: Seriously, they’re all like this. There’s a new ad every few days and they’re all just them listing things they think you like and then saying “WAH.”

Gentille: Could they not get the rights to “wow”? Is this the car commercial equivalent of, “No, we’ve got ‘wow’ at home”?

McIndoe: I believe there are some versions where they try to tell you that “wah” is “wow,” but yeah, your guess is as good as mine.

Gentille: Are “wah” and “wow” the same thing? No commercial can aspire to greater heights than confusing every person who watches it.

McIndoe: I think the main thing here is that “wah” keeps its head on a swivel. So … it has a head? It’s anthropomorphic in some way?

Gentille: I drove an Elantra for years, and I don’t recall any children stopping their street hockey games to gawk at it. “Wah, look how sensible that Sedan is. Wah, where did you find a 2005 model car with a tape deck?”

McIndoe: I do want to give them credit for one thing: With Zach Hyman , they absolutely nailed how to use an NHL player in a commercial. Give him zero lines, get him off-screen as quickly as possible, and use a subtitle on the assumption that nobody will know who he is.

Gentille: “Is that Johnny Manziel?”

McIndoe: By the way, there’s another Wah ad that features Mark Schiefele in the exact same way. It’s like they went out and said “Go get me the fourth-best player from as many Canadian teams as we can afford, which is to say two.”

Gentille: Here’s where it kind of works, though: All I want to do now is scream “Stop trying to make ‘wah’ happen” at Hyundai like I’m Regina George — and that’s better than not remembering a commercial whatsoever.

McIndoe: Uh oh, somebody call the wah-mbulance. (Which is also electric. And driven by Zach Hyman.)

OK, your turn.

Gentille: I’m going with one that hit peak saturation early in the playoffs, during NHL and NBA playoff games. Taco Bell couldn’t put Pete on the board, but they still made it with this one.

McIndoe: Could they … not afford video cameras for this one? “Just take a few photos, it will be fine.”

Gentille: Sexy young people love Taco Bell, too. This makes it seem like TB is their destination for the evening, not the place they’d wind up at 3:30 a.m., begging to be let inside. (That might’ve just been me.)

McIndoe: “Hey man, can you get us into that hot new dining spot everyone is raving about, the hood of your car?”

Gentille: Watch it again, though. Imagine hearing “Let’s eat yah yah” at every commercial break for everything you watched on TV for several weeks.

McIndoe: Yeah, pardon my old man vibes, but is this a real song or something they made for this ad? It’s dangerously close to the “one margarita” thing on TikTok right now but I feel like that must be a coincidence.

Gentille: Look at grandpa! He’s never heard “Feast” by Bludnymph! (I Googled “let’s eat yah yah taco bell.” The song came out in 2021.)

McIndoe: That is definitely my new favorite Bludnymph song.

Gentille: Everywhere I go, people are like “wow, what’s your favorite Bludnymph song?” and I’m just like … you have no idea.

McIndoe: Also, I have to mention how much I respect you Americans and your willingness to stick with the “put cheese on everything in any way possible” bit.

Gentille: Oh, it’s a legitimate business model down here. Phone companies use it, too. Banks. Fire departments.

McIndoe: OK, hear me out. Are you sitting down? What if we went with: “Let’s eat, wah wah.”

Gentille: I was going to say that up top, but I knew we’d make our way to it eventually.

McIndoe: Time for Round 2?

Gentille: Let’s go.

Commercial No. 2

McIndoe: For my second ad, I’m going to say right off the top that it’s not awful. It even has a certain sense of charm. I’m choosing it for two reasons: It plays constantly, like every few breaks, and Rogers has made a lot of people very mad this year with their advertising, so they need to be mocked somehow. And if I have to dunk on a child to do it, you better believe I will.

Gentille: We’ve seen this sort of thing before; my inclination is to say “eh, that’s fine” and move on because I don’t have the baggage that comes with watching the same clip 15 times each game. My other assumption is that you’re biased against dads getting outsmarted by their daughters. Hits close to home.

McIndoe: You’re 100 percent right. He’s just trying to be nice, and the kid is all snotty about it. Play along, you little brat. This ad should end with him turning the TV off and sending her to her room.

Gentille: And then dad gets his laptop and works on the OGWAC post, because it’s running the next morning.

McIndoe:   In the 60-second version, sure. Also, doesn’t this feel like a wasted opportunity to have the kid start naming things that would never appear on a TV? Like, “a Senators playoff game” or “Gary Bettman giving a straight answer”?

Gentille: In his last act as GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs , Kyle Dubas asked the Rogers remote for “Shanahan money.”

McIndoe: Oh, you’re going to want to save those Leaf jokes for section three, my friend.

By the way, if any of you Americans are mad that this commercial wasn’t bad enough, feel free to click on this Rogers ad from the winter . Seriously, go ahead and do it. I encourage it. See how that goes for you.

(But seriously don’t click it, you will regret it forever.)

Gentille: Too late. Go ask Shayna to finish up for me.

McIndoe: Can I just say that as the father of a teenage daughter, that girl cheerily playing along with her dad singing at her is the most unrealistic thing ever filmed?

OK, hit me with your second ad.

Gentille: The visuals on this one from Cadillac are fine, and I’m a little concerned — yet again — that you have to hear it every hour on the hour to get the full effect, but I can’t omit it, either. It’s a late rise. People in my Twitter mentions are really, really sick of this one.

McIndoe: For the record, I am one viewing in and I do not like this song already.

Gentille: But Labrinth composed the score for “Euphoria”! That makes him good!

McIndoe: I’ll take your word for it.

Gentille: Nothing makes me feel older than stuff like that — “Oh, Cadillac x Labrinth. I definitely know what that means.”

McIndoe: Is this guy the American Weeknd, or does it go the other way around?

Gentille: The American Weeknd is just Weeknd. He’s ours now, for good or ill.

McIndoe: Man, look at us just hammering away on electric cars today. Just a couple of grumpy old guys longing for the days of diesel.

Gentille: If you’re looking for a classic North American vehicle — not a cowardly electric car with a French name — just wait.

McIndoe: I did something that nobody should ever do, and looked in the YouTube comment section. People seem to love this ad. Like, more than anyone on the internet likes anything. I’m not accusing Cadillac of anything here, but this all seems faker than Bettman’s fan surveys.

Gentille: That’s exactly what I’m talking about! Labrinth scored a zeitgeist TV show, collaborated with Beyoncé and has individual songs on Spotify that have been streamed more than a half-billion times. I had no idea who he was until I saw this during, like, Game 3 of Devils-Canes. You could’ve told me that model Cadillac is called the Labrinth and I’d have had no choice but to agree.

McIndoe: Are we so out of touch? No, it’s the children who are wrong, he said, quoting a TV scene from nearly 30 years ago.

OK, time for Round 3.

Gentille: I’m following the pattern and guessing this one features a teenage girl spitting in her dad’s face.

McIndoe: Close!

Commercial No. 3

McIndoe: OK, so imagine you’re an ad executive for a major account. You’ve got the green light to do an ad that’s going to run constantly during the NHL playoffs. You’re going to try to be funny, so you really want to put a smile on the face of those viewers. Who would you say is the single person most associated with bringing joy to Canadian hockey fans during April and May?

If you said Mitch Marner , you’re right!

Oh, and since that one is only 15 seconds long, let’s make this a two-fer:

Gentille: Ohhh no.

McIndoe: Go on. Let us in. Feel your way through it.

Gentille: Not a surprise to see a hockey player point at themselves and say “right winger.”

McIndoe: Also not a surprise to see Mitch Marner only doing half of what he should do in the spring.

Gentille: “Mitch, we’ve only got a certain amount to spend on dinner, s—”

“I want wings.”

“Right, but those are, like, the most expensive thing on the menu. If you order those we’re not going to be able to afford beers or dessert.”

“Yep, but I want wings.”

“We’ll be able to get a lot more food if you pick something else, though.”

“I bet we could. My wings are gonna taste great.”

McIndoe: Also, it’s really unfortunate his endorsement deal mandated that he use that little fork-stick for the entire Panthers series.

Gentille: He could just start eating from the right side — then every wing would be a right wing. Alas, someone designed a commercial around the first joke that came to mind and forced poor Mitch to pick up two wings at once, like nobody has ever done.

McIndoe: Rumor is they asked Elias Pettersson to do the ad, but he found it too confusing to have two decent wings.

Gentille: It’s cool that he got to reenact these commercials on his couch during the Eastern Conference final.

McIndoe: Did somebody say, skip … all the meaningful playoff rounds every year?

Gentille: Skip The Dishes. Hell, skip the Cups too.

McIndoe: Just for the record, I really went back and forth on the “which underachieving Leaf gets the three-spot” question. I came very close to going with this Auston Matthews ad instead. If it’s possible to try way too hard to look like you’re not trying at all, here’s your prototype.

Gentille: Unfortunately, Sergei Bobrovsky heard his “make it count.”

McIndoe: OK, this is getting too painful. Let’s bring in the closer.

Gentille: Last one. Who doesn’t love trucks, tortured metaphors and country songs?

McIndoe: Oh boy. They play this one a lot, do they?

Gentille: Oh, I think I’ve seen it go back-to-back. It was the people’s champ by a healthy margin.

Forget the content for a second — something about the cadence of the opening couple lines is ruining people’s lives.

McIndoe: Yeah, I would absolutely get rage chills if I had to hear those first few seconds more than once a night.

Gentille: “Ma’am, the test results are back, and I’m sorry … you’ve got a heart like a truck.”

McIndoe: This whole song sounds like a mom explaining to her kids why she won’t be around much longer.

Gentille: That’s apparently a well-known song, too. I was so psyched to hear her specify that her Truck Heart runs on gasoline.

McIndoe: I’m not up on my country, how old is this song? Because it feels like it was 100 percent written just to end up in a truck commercial.

Gentille: I think that’s why most country songs are written. Looks like it came out last year … also Heart Truck Lady dates legendary Steelers third-string QB Duck Hodges. Worlds are colliding here.

McIndoe: So she has a heart like a Duck?

Gentille: She’s on “Yellowstone,” too? Another car commercial featuring an extremely famous person that I’ve never heard of? What a world! That’d be like finding out that someone from the Hyundai commercial goes out with David Ayers.

McIndoe: I mean, I made you watch ads with Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews , it’s nice to know that somebody in Section 3 has some kind of heart.

Hey, by the way, I watched that ad maybe three times and this song is absolutely stuck in my head right now. I think I might want to hurt you.

Gentille: Sorry brother — I know you’ve taken a hell of a beating. A little bit of love is all that you’re needing. But you’re good as you are tough.

McIndoe: I think the best way to describe my feelings right now would be: The complete opposite of wah.

Gentille: Let’s eat yah yah.

McIndoe: Better idea, let’s never do this again.

Gentille: You’ve said that before. See you next year.
