Just yesterday my student successfully defended her honors thesis on environmentalism around Lake Baikal, a project that would not have been possible without the fieldwork that she conducted on her SRAS study abroad program in Irkutsk. I hope to see more such projects in the future and will keep directing students to SRAS programs!
At Stetson, we’ve used SRAS to arrange all of our student study abroad trips for the past five or six years. During that time we’ve sent dozens of students on summer- and semester-long programs in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Irkutsk. In every interaction I’ve had with them, SRAS has been prompt, reliable, knowledgable, courteous and quick to lend a hand when needed.

It began disastrously for Union forces but became arguably one of the Union’s most remarkable triumphs and aided President Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 bid for reelection. History professor Jonathan A. Noyalas leads a daylong tour exploring the complexities of the battle and its significance in the Civil War’s broader context.

What we do?

Study Tours to Poland (STP) is a Polish-American Freedom Foundation program, implemented by the Leaders of Change Foundation in cooperation with the Borussia Foundation. As part of the Program, study visits to Poland are organized for people from Eastern Europe, South Caucasus, and Central Asia. The Program’s offer is addressed to students and professionals from a range of fields and specialties.

Study tours should offer more 'learning' experience

study tours to

"Ink on paper can only convey so much, true understanding requires putting knowledge into action." The popularity of study tours continues increasing during the summer vacation. Many parents are arranging for their children to go on educational trips, in order to break the relative monotony of classroom education. By providing them immersive real-life experiences, parents are seeking to broaden their children's horizons, enhance their knowledge, and help them integrate learning with exploration and enjoyment.

According to the summer travel data forecast from several online travel platforms, this summer is expected to witness a huge surge in demand, surpassing that of the same period in 2019. Among the emerging trends, "study tours" are new for the tourism industry, contributing significantly to its gradual recovery and improvement.

In 2021 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism released the"14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Cultural Industries", which laid stress on the vigorous development of study tours. The plan is aimed at creating innovative study tour products that integrate cultural experiences, technological innovation, knowledge dissemination, entertainment, leisure and interactive parent-child activities.

According to available data, the number of participants in study tours reached 4.94 million in 2021, far exceeding the pre-pandemic figures. In 2022, the number crossed 6 million, an all-time high.

The concept of "combining learning with travel" has become a new consumer trend, with study tours becoming an emerging tourism model. Study tours promote the integration of "culture, tourism and education", a novel way to experience cultural tourism and engage in practical education by studying people's daily lives. Study tours also combine family education, school education and community education.

Compared to developed countries in Europe and the Americas, China's study tour market started relatively late, with a lower overall market penetration rate, indicating that there is still considerable untapped potential to expand the market.

According to the "China Study Tour Development Report 2022-23" published by the China Tourism Academy, since the joint release of the "Opinions on Promoting Study Tours for Primary and Secondary School Students" by the Ministry of Education and 11 other departments in 2016, people's understanding of study tours has increased. The study tour demographic now includes preschool children, primary, middle and high school students, as well as adults and senior citizens, representing a broader developmental space.

With the combined impetus of favorable policies and the demand for quality education, the study tour market has grown rapidly in recent years. This year, study tourism has experienced even more robust growth, with more than 5,000 "study camps" and related enterprises across the country. To better develop study tours and avoid superficial experiences, tourism destinations can focus on the following aspects:

To begin with, it is essential to clearly define the positioning of the study tour market and expand the supply chains of study tour products. To establish a distinct identity and highlight the core values of "research" and "learning", study tours should not only focus on providing immersive experiences but also prioritize educational aspects, integrating them through products and services. This approach will ensure study tours offer high-quality educational resources for students.

It is also crucial to continuously optimize the study tour product chains. This can be achieved by incorporating the latest educational concepts and technological advancements to create a complete industry chain encompassing base construction, itinerary design, qualified instructors, curriculum development, safety assurance and other essential elements. This comprehensive approach will drive high-quality development in the study tour sector.

Furthermore, there is a need to capitalize on the diverse resources of each region and cultivate study tours as a branded intellectual property. Local authorities should engage in comprehensive planning, and consider study tours to be a significant vehicle for cultural and educational enrichment.

They can delve deep into local intangible cultural heritage, the country's revolutionary culture, ethnic minority culture, and traditional Chinese culture, among other distinctive cultural traits, to promote unique study tours.

For instance, in June 2023, the Guizhou provincial cultural and tourism authorities announced six study tour routes centered on intangible cultural heritage. Leveraging Guizhou's abundant intangible cultural heritage resources and tourist attractions, the province developed high-quality specialized courses to attract more young students to go on study tours in Guizhou.

This initiative aims to facilitate the effective transformation of intangible cultural heritage resources into cultural and tourism intellectual property, ultimately developing the "Study in Guizhou" study tour brand and driving the high-quality development of the tourism industry in the province.

Finally, to enhance the quality of study tour products and promote innovation among students, it is important to prioritize content innovation in study tours. So, local authorities should tailor the development of prominent educational study tour activities with strong regional characteristics. They should introduce innovative elements, such as incorporating technology education, implementing interdisciplinary projects, and creating a series of exemplary study tour bases. Additionally, they can design influential and high-quality study tour itineraries.

Like Guizhou, other provinces and regions can also leverage local events such as Guizhou's "Chinese Rural Football Super League" or "Village Super", which has become a rage across the country, "Village Basketball" and the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope installed in Guizhou, to showcase their unique natural resources and cater to the demands of study tour travelers.

A potentially habitable Earth-size planet was discovered just 40 light-years away

Gliese 12 b, which orbits a cool, red dwarf star located just 40 light-years away, promises to tell astronomers more about how planets close to their stars retain or lose their atmospheres. In this artist’s concept, Gliese 12 b is shown retaining a thin atmosphere.

A potentially habitable exoplanet that is roughly similar in size to Earth has been found in a system located 40 light-years away, according to a new study.

The planet is about the size of Venus, so slightly smaller than Earth, and may be temperate enough to support life, the researchers said.

Dubbed Gliese 12 b, the planet takes 12.8 days to orbit a star that is 27% of the sun’s size. It’s not yet known whether the exoplanet has an atmosphere.

But the scientists behind the study, published Thursday in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society , estimated that Gliese 12 b has a surface temperature of about 107 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius). While hot, that temperature is lower than most of the thousands of exoplanets discovered to date.

“Gliese 12 b could be at the right temperature for liquid water to pool on its surface, and that’s important because we tend to think liquid water is an essential ingredient for life as we know it,” Shishir Dholakia, one of the study’s authors and a doctoral student at the University of Southern Queensland’s Centre for Astrophysics, said in a statement .

The researchers are keen to get a closer look at the exoplanet, including with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope , which launched into space in 2021 and is equipped with a sophisticated suite of instruments capable of studying exoplanet atmospheres .

The scientists want to determine if the planet has an atmosphere similar to that on Earth, or whether its atmosphere is as extreme and hostile as that on Venus. Alternately, Gliese 12 b could have no atmosphere at all, or one that is unfamiliar and not seen in our own solar system, they said.

The findings could help researchers better understand the factors that make exoplanets potentially habitable. The observations may also shed light on how our own solar system evolved.

“Because Gliese 12 b is between Earth and Venus in temperature, its atmosphere could teach us a lot about the habitability pathways planets take as they develop,” study co-author Larissa Palethorpe, a doctoral student at the University of Edinburgh and University College London, said in a statement .

Gliese 12 b was discovered using data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite , which is designed to stare at a huge patch of the sky for about a month at a time. The space telescope, which launched into space in 2018, looks for periodic changes in brightness of tens of thousands of stars.

If a star dims at regular intervals, it may be a sign that a planet is orbiting the star, passing in front of it and temporarily obscuring its light.

Side by side of a margarita and the MSC Euribia.

Two of the world’s greatest bars are hitting the high seas!

Lucky passengers aboard the MSC Cruise ships, the Euribia and the World Europa ,  will enjoy exclusive pop-up bar activations from Barcelona’s finest cocktail destinations.

The Euribia is hosting SIPS (No. 1 in the World’s 50 Best Bars, 2023) as it sails the North Sea, while the World Europa hosts Paradiso (No. 1, 2022) as it circumnavigates the Mediterranean.

Close up of a margarita.

Both pop-ups will be serving from a “greatest hits” menu onboard through September.

This is the latest in a line of luxury-leaning moves for the privately held Italian-Swiss MSC Cruises following partnerships with TimeVallée and Formula One.

“We’re delighted to bring the ‘World’s Greatest Bars’ concept on board our ships,” Jacques Van Staden, food and beverage vice president at MSC Cruises, said. “The new program brings our food and beverage offering to new heights, providing unforgettable experiences not seen before at sea.”

Guests on the Euribia will be treated to eleven cocktails from SIPS, a bar created by two of the world’s greatest bartenders, Marc Alvarez and Simone Caporale, who hide their mind-bending techniques behind playful presentations.

Exterior of MSC Euribia at sea.

Patrons can choose a perfect negroni kept cool by white chocolate-coated ice (so the cubes can’t dilute the drink), a vodka cocktail topped with a bubble of smoke and a side of cava, or the hand-shaped, metal-cast vessel for the scotch-, Calvados- and ruby Port-based Primordial, among many other masterpieces — all deftly designed to be as elegant as they are surprising.

Thirteen of Paradiso’s otherworldly cocktails are available aboard the Mediterranean-bound World Europa, and there isn’t a miss on the menu.

The bittersweet Kryptonita shows off Paradiso’s ability to delicately balance flavors with an electric presentation, while the Bacco Per Bacco plays with form and texture (using strawberry caviar and a grape-bunch goblet), and the Caribe Italiano transforms sweet Caribbean rum into a Parmesan-washed, umami-filled delight. Drinking these wild cocktails is like falling through the looking glass.

These complicated techniques could falter in the hands of lesser bartenders, but the bar owners have faith in the MSC bar staff they trained. Caporale of SIPS described them as “super cool, very switched on, international.”

These super-cool international bartenders will spend the summer crisscrossing European waters, so for those cruising for some boozing, it’s all aboard and full-steam ahead.

1 in 5 Americans plan to go into debt for summer vacation, report finds. Here’s how to avoid that

Some people are foregoing summer vacations this year while others are taking steps to save.

By Caroline McDonald

A 2024 Summer Travel Report by NerdWallet recently reported key insights into what the 2024 travel season will look like.

According to the annual survey, 45% of Americans have travel plans this summer that require a hotel or a flight. Many of these travelers plan on going into debt to afford these vacations.

While travel debt may seem inevitable for some, there are ways to lower the costs.

What is travel debt?

According to the study , 83% of summer travelers expect to pay for at least a portion of their expenses with a credit card. However, not all of them plan to pay off the debt right away. “(Twenty percent) of summer travelers plan to use a credit card for these expenses but won’t pay off the expenses in full within the first billing statement.”

Some travel debt will come from the wedding season, according to CNBC . Wedding accommodations and the cost of travel “racked up the highest bills.”

The 2024 Summer Travel Report cited vacationing with family members and visiting family as the most popular reasons for traveling. The next most popular reasons included vacationing with a significant other and visiting friends. Of the Americans who will not be taking a vacation that requires a flight or a hotel stay, 22% cited inflation as the culprit. Almost as many non-travelers reported the same — inflation “has made their other expenses too expensive, so they can’t afford to take a summer vacation.”

How can I avoid travel debt?

According to NerdWallet , 2024 summer travelers have supplied a list of ways they are saving money on their travels.

The leading money-saving technique is driving instead of flying. Forty-two percent of study participants will forego a flight and take to the roads instead. Thirty-nine percent plan to choose a hotel, motel or resort based on the price rather than the amenities.

For those summer travelers who will be flying, many will choose a flight based on the price. Others will stay with family and friends.

According to CNBC , there are other ways to cut down on expenses:

Book your travel as soon as possible

“The sooner you book your travel plans, the lower the upfront cost will tend to be,” according to CNBC. Remember that flight prices will spike around the holidays. Additionally, flying on a Tuesday or a Wednesday often produces cheaper tickets than weekend flights.

Watch the costs of food

Look for ways to cut down on restaurant and food expenses. Prepare now by looking at potential restaurants you will visit on your vacation — plus what the costs will be.

Use credit card rewards

If using a credit card on vacation, check for benefits. These rewards may help to lower the cost of dining expenses and travel fees. Ted Rossman, a Bankrate senior industry analyst, provided further advice.

“It’s a good idea to pay with a credit card that offers generous travel insurance benefits such as trip cancellation and interruption insurance and stipends if your flight is delayed or your luggage is lost,” he told Bankrate . “Rental car insurance is another helpful benefit included on many cards.”
