Solo Ben Gibbard Announced as Opener For Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service Tour

the postal service tour opening act

By Bobby Korec | December 8, 2022

BREMERTON, Wash. — Ben Gibbard announced he will be performing solo as the opening act for the upcoming Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service Tour celebrating 20 years of “Transatlantacism” and “Give Up,” sources who couldn’t get enough of him in their lives confirmed.

“After careful deliberation of who I’d like to bring out on tour with me, I finally landed on the difficult decision to choose myself,” said Gibbard while constructing a 50-song setlist for all performances. “I honestly couldn’t think of anyone more qualified or deserving than old Big Ben to open for me and then me again. Sure, I’ll be playing three sets a night with three different musical acts, but I’ll be giving the people what they want: Non-stop me. Modest Mouse actually volunteered to open for us, but I had to turn them down because I am simply not in that band. After all, we’ve got a tour brand to uphold.”

Fans of Gibbard’s work couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming performances.

“As someone who religiously listens to everything this man has put out, this is actually my musical dream blunt rotation,” said Jennifer Harrington. “I just can’t wait to hear the rich wistful melodies of solo Ben Gibbard live followed by the rich wistful melodies of The Postal Service followed by the rich wistful melodies of Death Cab for Cutie. There’s just nothing like band member consistency throughout an entire show. You could say I’m overjoyed to see three Bens for the price of one.”

Experts seemed quite impressed with the announcement.

“In the industry, this is called a triple crown performance. Or, if you want to get into semantics, a hat trick show,” said music historian Juliette Cowhen. “This isn’t the first time this has happened either. Solo Jack White was once scheduled to open for the Raconteurs and the White Stripes. Unfortunately, that never came to fruition due to the length of time it would take for Jack White to ‘get into character’ between sets. They estimated a good 90 minutes between performances. Classic Jack. He’s what you call a method musician.”

In related news, Gibbard also announced that he would be manning the singular merch booth on all tour dates.

Death Cab Postal Service

Indie-rock institutions the Postal Service and  Death Cab for Cutie  — both of whom are fronted and co-founded by singer-songwriter Ben Gibbard — will undertake a 20th anniversary co-headlining North American tour next year.

The groups will perform their landmark 2003 albums in full — the Postal Service’s platinum-certified “Give Up” and Death Cab’s breakthrough fourth studio LP “Transatlanticism” — which were actually released within a mere eight months of one another that year.

Popular on Variety

“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003. The Postal Service record came out, ‘Transatlanticism’ came out,” Gibbard says. “These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”

The tour will kick off September 8, 2023 at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, ME and continue through mid-October, with highlights including shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Berkeley, CA’s Greek Theatre, and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. Pre-sales begin Wednesday, December 14 at 10 am (local) and continue through Thursday, December 15 at 10 pm (local) in early access programs. All remaining tickets will be released to the general public on Friday, December 16 at 10 am (local).

Also in 2020, the trio joined forces to support HeadCount’s “Make Your Vote Count” campaign via a star-studded video of “Zoom Auditions” for new band members which featured appearances from fans including Anne Hathaway, Kenny G, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Slash, Huey Lewis, Caroline Polachek, Michelle Zauner, Big Freedia, and J Mascis, and others.

Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service frontman Ben Gibbard sings onstage with a guitar in hand.

Forget 2023 — let’s party like it’s 2003.

Indie rock royalty Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service just announced a massive tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their respective albums “Transatlanticism” and “Give Up,” where they’ll play both records in full at each gig.

This isn’t your typical co-headlining tour, though .

That’s because Ben Gibbard is the lead singer for both groups and will work overtime at all shows, taking the mic for the Death Cab AND Postal Service portions of each evening.

You read that right.

Each show will have a double helping of Gibbard.

Then, as a cherry on top, Postal Service member turned superstar, Jenny Lewis confirmed she’ll be joining the tour as well on Instagram .

“Can’t wait to join Ben & Jimmy Taborello next fall to play these amazing songs again & hear my fave Death Cab album live! BLESS!”

Plus, New York scene kids of past and present, we come bearing even more good news for you— the tour will swoop into Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Sept. 20.

Now, if you’re as excited as we are and can’t wait until tickets officially go on sale, you can snag seats for the show closest to you as early as today .

While inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, Dec. 16, folks who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can go ahead and purchase on Vivid Seats before seats are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Death Cab For Cutie and Postal Service 2022-23 schedule

The 17-concert, multi-headliner run begins in Portland, ME, on Sept. 8 at the Cross Insurance Arena .

From there, Gibbard’s groups will head to locales like Boston ( Sept. 12 , Sept. 13 ), Philadelphia (Sept. 21), Denver ( Sept. 26 , Sept. 27 ), Phoenix (Oct. 3) and Seattle (Oct. 7).

Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl show on Oct. 13 is the last of the run.

A complete calendar featuring all upcoming tour dates, venues, start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

Death Cab For Cutie 2023 tour

Before Gibbard teams up with, well, himself, Death Cab For Cutie is continuing their ongoing Asphalt Meadows Tour .

This run of shows, named after DCFC’s dreamy 2022 album, began in July and will run all the way to June .

They’ll be joined by opening acts Momma, Slow Pulp and Lomelda on select dates.

The Postal Service news

While Death Cab For Cutie has remained active in the 20 years since “Transatlanticism” made waves in the indie music world, The Postal Service has remained relatively quiet post- “Give Up.”

However, just like the actual US Postal Service, The Postal Service always deliver never “Give Up”— even if it takes a decade to do so.

Most recently, the trio that brought the world “Such Great Heights” and “We Will Become Silhouettes” conducted a tenth anniversary tour in 2013.

These upcoming concerts will be the band’s first since that 37-show run.

Gibbard is more than excited to revisit some of his greatest hits too.

“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” Gibbard said in a press release. “The Postal Service record came out, ‘Transatlanticism’ came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”

A chills-inducing 30-second tour trailer that beautifully mashes up “Such Great Heights” and title track “Transatlanticism” can be seen and heard below.

Songwriter Ben Gibbard had a good year in 2003. His rock band Death Cab for Cutie, which had been growing in popularity since the late 1990s, experienced a commercial breakthrough with the album “Transatlanticism.” He also created an electronic-pop album with producer Jimmy Tamborello under the name The Postal Service – and that album, “Give Up,” became a surprise hit. On the 20th anniversary of that milestone year, he took both acts on the road to play each album in full, stopping in Portland for a sold-out performance at the Cross Insurance Arena on Friday.

On some level, it’s a bit surreal to witness these songs in an arena. Gibbard benefited greatly from the file-sharing boom of the early 2000s, as young people everywhere found his work on Napster or Limewire and found it ideal for bedroom or dorm-room listening. There is an intimacy to his singing, making it sound like he’s quietly confessing secrets even when he is screaming. The Postal Service was even created through such intimacy, with Gibbard and Tamborello mailing the tracks back and forth and adding components with each send-off. For millennials of a certain age, the anniversary concert may have felt both nostalgic and like a reunion with the music, now grown up and on a bigger stage.

Both bands leaned into the environment. Death Cab for Cutie turned up the explosive riffs on songs like the opener “The New Year” and pummelled the climax of the album’s penultimate track, “We Looked Like Giants.” The Postal Service ramped up the rhythm section, transforming what on the album are intricate and low-key beats into grandiose rave-ups, with Gibbard frequently hopping behind a drum kit to pile another rhythm on top of the mix.

While Transatlanticism boasts some of the sharpest writing of Gibbard’s career, even he knew that The Postal Service was the night’s main attraction, due both to the latter’s immense popularity and the rarity of those songs being taken on the road. It’s possible that this tour is the first time that a long-running rock band has ever served as an opening act for its own one-off side project, but after Death Cab for Cutie played their set, adorned in all-black clothing, the Postal Service took the stage dressed all in white.

Due to the full album presentation, the concert occasionally felt at odds with the proper ebbs and flows of setlist construction. For example, “Such Great Heights,” by far the most well-known song of the evening, was slotted second in the Postal Service set, in keeping with the album. (Gibbard did reprise it with an acoustic, country rendition in the encore). Other Postal Service songs, such as “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” and “We Will Become Silhouettes” were sterling; the pairing of introspective emo lyrics with extroverted accompaniment highlighted the group’s charm. Jenny Lewis, a rock star in her own right, provided admirable multi-instrumental and vocal support, coming to center stage for the duet “Nothing Better” to massive applause.

Taking both bands together, the evening was a testament to Gibbard’s solid songwriting, which can fit the contours of many styles of music, from gentle crooning to driving rock to dance pop. The uniform presentation even exposed the folly of such genre constructs in general. As if to prove this point, both bands took the stage together to send the crowd home with a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence.” The choice of cover seemed deliberate and pointed – decades ago, Depeche Mode reshaped music by playing rock songs with electronic instruments and adding guitars to synth-pop. On this anniversary of Gibbard’s two career-changing albums, he showed us this map, and where it took him.

Indie rock titans The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie have announced plans for a landmark 20 th anniversary co-headline North American tour. The extraordinary live run will see both iconic groups performing their seminal 2003 albums in full – The Postal Service’s RIAA Platinum-certified Give Up and Death Cab for Cutie’s RIAA Gold-certified breakthrough fourth studio LP Transatlanticism – two classics released within a mere eight months of one another that year. The tour includes a stop at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre on the campus of Oakland University on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. Oakland University Credit Union is the exclusive presenting partner of Meadow Brook Amphitheatre.

Benjamin Gibbard, the co-founder of both bands, will pull double duty throughout the tour, performing with The Postal Service – comprised of Gibbard, Jimmy Tamborello, and Jenny Lewis – as well as with Death Cab for Cutie (alongside Nick Harmer, Dave Depper, Zac Rae, and Jason McGerr).

“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003. The Postal Service record came out, Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.” – Gibbard

The tour was announced this morning via an exclusive trailer on the band’s socials (watch HERE ).

The sure to be highly-anticipated run will kick off September 8, 2023 at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, ME and continue through mid-October, with highlights including shows at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden, Berkeley, CA’s Greek Theatre, and Los Angeles, CA’s Hollywood Bowl.

The upcoming tour will mark the first live performances from The Postal Service in over a decade, following 2013’s hugely successful 10-year anniversary reunion tour for Give Up – an album which still stands today as Sub Pop’s second highest-selling album in the label’s history, second only to Nirvana’s Bleach. The reunion tour was captured for posterity on a live concert film, Everything Will Change , released in 2014 and subsequently on a live audio album released in 2020 to digital streaming platforms.

Also in 2020, the trio joined forces to support HeadCount’s “Make Your Vote Count” campaign via a star-studded video of “ Zoom Auditions ” for new band members which featured appearances from fans including Anne Hathaway, Kenny G, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Slash, Huey Lewis, Caroline Polachek, Michelle Zauner, Big Freedia, and J Mascis, to name a few.

Meanwhile, 8x GRAMMY® Award-nominees Death Cab for Cutie are currently celebrating the release of their critically acclaimed 10 th studio album, Asphalt Meadows . Produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Wallows), the new LP includes the explosive “ Roman Candles ” and chart-topping “ Here to Forever ,” the latter of which reached #1 at Alternative radio in October, after spending a record-setting nine weeks atop the AAA airplay chart this summer. The album received tremendous praise from outlets including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Vulture, SPIN, Stereogum, and Pitchfork, who lauded the record as “a late career masterwork… a restoration of their creative momentum when a mere ‘return to form’ would have sufficed.”

Ahead of the dates with The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie will continue their Asphalt Meadows world tour in January 2023, traversing North America, Europe, and the UK through June, with support from Momma, Slow Pulp, and Lomelda on select dates. This follows their much-celebrated headline tour this past Fall at venues including Forest Hills (NYC) and The Greek Theatre (LA). Formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997, Death Cab for Cutie immediately entered the ranks of the era’s most definitive bands, thanks in large part to the remarkable power of co-founder, vocalist, guitarist, and lead songwriter Ben Gibbard’s complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003’s RIAA gold certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of “The Decade’s 50 Most Important Recordings.” Fueled by critical acclaim, an array of high-profile soundtrack placements, and such hit singles as “The Sound of Settling” and “Title and Registration,” the album debuted among the upper half of the Billboard 200 – Death Cab for Cutie’s first ever entry on the overall chart. A 10 th anniversary edition of Transatlanticism containing previously unheard demos and outtakes arrived in 2013, prompting NPR to write, “For all its ubiquity and imitators, Transatlanticism holds up as an exquisitely produced, largely flawless record in which every song is bound to serve as someone’s favorite.”

2003 also saw Gibbard and Los Angeles, CA-based multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, Figurine) unite as The Postal Service, a long distance collaboration named for their working method of exchanging tracks via the US Mail. The duo – joined by a number of friends including singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis – proved a phenomenon with the February 2003 release of their one and only studio LP, Give Up, earning worldwide applause and eventual RIAA platinum certification thanks to infectious electro-pop smashes like “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” (a top 3 sensation on Billboard’s “Hot Dance Singles” chart), “We Will Become Silhouettes (which reached the top 3 on the Canadian Singles Chart), and of course, the magical RIAA gold certified “Such Great Heights.” The album’s stature continued to grow in the years following its original release, ultimately spending 19 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Electronic Albums” chart. In 2013, The Postal Service reunited to mark the 10 th anniversary of Give Up with their biggest headline tour ever, along with top-billed performances at such international festivals as Coachella, Primavera Sound, Lollapalooza, and Sasquatch. In addition, a commemorative 10 th anniversary edition of Give Up saw the singular collection expanded with 15 bonus tracks, including two brand new songs, “A Tattered Line of String” and “Turn Around.”

Review: The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie turn back the clock in Seattle

Michael Rietmulder

The triangular Ben Gibbard-shaped silhouette feverishly rocked and swayed as a wave of guitar distortion slowly grew in force. The Death Cab for Cutie frontman and his mates were only faintly visible on the giant low-lit stage, but it was impossible not to see and feel Gibbard’s adrenaline mounting as the band launched into “The New Year” in front of a virtually sold-out Climate Pledge Arena — a big stage, even by Death Cab standards — on Friday.

The track is one of the Seattle indie rock greats’ most explosive songs and the ready-to-blow crowd reciprocated as the blustery rocker came crashing in with those swelling guitars and Nick Harmer’s stabbing bass lines.

Conveniently, the fuse-lighting fan favorite is the opening track off Death Cab’s seminal “Transatlanticism,” which the band is playing in full on its current tour with another Gibbard-led band, The Postal Service. The co-headlining run marks the 20th anniversary of “Transatlanticism” and The Postal Service’s lone record “Give Up” — two era-defining indie rock albums, for Seattle and the genre more broadly.

For fans of a certain age, the album anniversary tour has become commonplace, both a crowd-winning serving of nostalgia and a savvy marketing move. The strong response to the Gibbardpalooza tour even surprised the man himself, who didn’t expect to play two nights at the hometown arena Death Cab helped christen in 2021. There isn’t a babysitter in Seattle with the weekend off, as another millennial-heavy crowd is expected to pack Climate Pledge for the second show on Saturday, exactly 20 years to the date since “Transatlanticism” was released on Seattle’s Barsuk Records.

But Friday night wasn’t just another stop on a ticket-selling anniversary run.

“Seattle, oh my God, we’re so [expletive] happy to see you guys,” Gibbard exclaimed before another fan favorite, “Title and Registration.”

Really, he didn’t need to say anything. His body language made it clearer than a translucent vinyl record. Gibbard, as pensive and eloquent a songwriter as his generation’s produced, isn’t necessarily thought of as a dive-headfirst-into-the-drum-set sort of rocker. But early on, the amped-up frontman furiously paced and stomped around the outsized stage like he could smash his guitar at any second, even during the delicate “Title and Registration.”

Unlike The Postal Service, Gibbard’s one-off collaboration with electronic producer Jimmy Tamborello that played a reunion run a decade ago, Death Cab has steadily toured and recorded over the past 25 years. With a number of songs off “Transatlanticism” — Death Cab’s commercial breakthrough that officially made the band indie-famous — ingrained in its set lists over the years, it was the deeper cuts, like acoustic closer “A Lack of Color” that made for the most memorable moments.

As the album’s title track, a set-list staple that’s one of the band’s more subtly dramatic numbers, segued seamlessly into the less common “Passenger Seat” (just as it does on the album), the crowd seemed to savor the moment. The audience, one of the most attentive and engaged that arena’s ever seen, was frequently pindrop-quiet when songs like the stripped-down piano ballad — performed by Gibbard and multi-instrumentalist Zac Rae — called for it.

Between Gibbard’s upshifting falsetto on the back half and the crowd’s perfect response, concisely howling with appreciation during Gibbard’s first few vocal pauses, it was as bone-chilling as a Seattle January.

As intimately as Seattle has come to know Death Cab and Gibbard — the Capitol Hill OG seen around town stumping for the Showbox or catching Treepeople at the Croc — over the years, it was almost a little strange (in a good way) to see their faces blown up on the arena’s big screens. No doubt a major reason the co-headlining run is drawing crowds so large is the opportunity to see The Postal Service for the first time since Gibbard, Tamborello and singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis reunited for a 10th anniversary run in 2013.

Released on Sub Pop eight months before “Transatlanticism,” “Give Up” became a certified indie smash — the second highest selling album in the homegrown label’s esteemed history, trailing only Nirvana’s “Bleach.” That’s some serious company, and appropriate considering that the two landmark albums helped ensure that Seattle and the Pacific Northwest would play a prominent role in the indie-rock boom of the 2000s, after the grunge era’s sunset.

“There started to bubble up this, I would like to think unpretentious, but very literate, emotive, earnest music that was coming from the Northwest,” Gibbard said in an interview before the shows, referencing bands like Modest Mouse and Portland’s The Shins and The Decemberists. He continued: “These weren’t, like, cool records. People weren’t writing about them as if they were cool, because I think that earnestness is often uncomfortable for some people.”

There’s a high degree of humility in those words, as the critical consensus on the well-aged indie classics (and those PNW bands collectively) has certainly been favorable over time. And when the just-enough stage and arena lights brightened to illuminate the packed-out upper levels during The Postal Service’s set, it was a clear testament to the staying power of two records Gibbard wrote in an attic apartment on Mercer Street 20-some years ago.

After a brief intermission, The Postal Service — dressed in all white and bolstered by Dave Depper and pop-ins from drummer Jason McGerr, both of Death Cab — took the stage with the humming synths that open one of the band’s more recognizable tunes, “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.” As the clacking electronic beats swept in and Lewis’ airy backing vocals signaled the crew was ready for liftoff, the crowd erupted in response.

Even with all the glitchy, bleeping electro notes twirling about, there’s a stillness at the center of “The District” and so many Postal Service songs that make them feel like standing in the middle of an 8-bit snow globe.

While hardly uncommon today, The Postal Service’s melding of indie rock and electronic music was still a novel concept back in the early 2000s. What sets the band apart even to this day is the synergy between Tamborello’s warm tones and Gibbard’s poetic heart-on-sleeve lyricism, delivered with a gentle breeze. It’s a wonder how well-worn the songs felt, even back then, considering the long-distance collaboration between Gibbard and Tamborello that had the two snail-mailing each other demo CDs (hence the band name). That tender harmony was on full display with songs like “Sleeping In” and a slow-drifting “Recycled Air.”

As well-received as Death Cab’s brisk run through “Transatlanticism” was, prompting a standing ovation, the crowd was even giddier for the once-in-a-decade chance to see The Postal Service. The rarity of the performance and more danceable fare made the reunited act the de facto headliner of what’s technically a co-headlining tour, all told roughly a two-hour show, including the intermission.

For a special Seattle treat, The Postal Service was joined by local singer-songwriter Jen Wood to sing her buzzing and buoyant duet with Gibbard on “Nothing Better,” a gleeful rendition that put a whimsical spin on a love denied.

While Lewis, a prominent indie rock singer-songwriter in her own right, is a little underused in The Postal Service, she received a larger share of the spotlight during the encore, joining Gibbard for a second, acoustic-only pass through “Such Great Heights.” The penultimate duet — mimicking an indie-folk version fellow Sub Pop vets Iron & Wine recorded years ago — set up a walk-off cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence,” featuring the rest of the Death Cab crew.

Dedicating the endearingly lo-fi “Brand New Colony” to the hometown a few minutes earlier, Gibbard harked back to the songs’ attic-apartment origins, sounding a little astonished to be playing them on the Climate Pledge Arena stage two decades later. “I never in a million [expletive] years would have ever thought that you guys would have been here tonight. So Seattle, this song is for you.”

As successful as the anniversary run has been, perhaps we’ll see ’em in another 10.

“Ben had this idea,” says Nick Harmer, Death Cab for Cutie ‘s bassist since 1997 when Gibbard decided to turn his fledgling solo project into a proper band. “It was like, ‘Do you think it’s time? Do you think there’s a world where we sort of combine these things together for a celebration and do this together?’

“I think everyone in the band immediately was like, ‘I absolutely think that’s a wonderful idea,’” Harmer says. “You know, it’s a very unique accomplishment that hardly any other singer-songwriter can claim to have made. We’re all very proud of Ben for that.”

The tour that kicked off in September 2023 with Death Cab playing its album “Transatlanticism” followed by the Postal Service performing “Give Up” got extended into 2024.

But when the two groups play Just Like Heaven in Pasadena on Saturday, May 18, that will be the end of the road in the United States for this 20th anniversary celebration. If you want to see both albums played in full, this is likely your last chance without flying to Europe for a final handful of shows come summer.

Just Like Heaven also features indie acts such as Phoenix , the War on Drugs, Metric , Tegan and Sara and more, and Harmer says he and his bandmates are delighted to bring their album to Brookside at the Rose Bowl this year, too.

“We’ve been having an amazing time playing this record,” Harmer says. “I think when we were thinking about a way to sort of significantly mark the 20-year anniversary of ‘Transatlanticism,’ it’s kind of hard to isolate the success of it in 2003 from the success of “Give Up’ that Ben also wrote and released in 2003.

“Those two records, while they’re different projects, and certainly, we’ve done our best over the years to keep them separate in people’s minds as much possible, they still are very much related because of the central mind that they’re coming out of.

“And the response has been phenomenal. I don’t think I quite expected how strong of a response we would get for a record that we made so long ago. But it’s really nice to play this each night and realize how these songs have continued to live and find people over the years.

In an interview edited for length and clarity, Harmer talked about old memories the tour has stirred, the unique blend of Death Cab and the Postal Service on tour as well as the impact of “The OC” television series, which also debuted in 2003, on Death Cab’s rising popularity and more.

Q: Diving back into ‘Transatlanticism’ must have reconnected you to memories. What stands out?

A: Playing this record is as close to stepping into a time machine as I think I’ll ever get in my life. There’s so much that you don’t even think you have in your mind, or that you’re carrying with you, that suddenly a certain phrase in a song or a moment of playing will trigger some buried memory.

It’s been kind of a constant wash of these feelings and emotions and remembering who I was, and who we were when we made the record, and then reflecting on how much growth and evolution has happened since then.

Q: Any specific example?

A: Just like how my relationships to the songs have changed. Take a song like ‘Passenger Seat’ on the album. When we wrote and recorded that song and played it in 2003, that song was very much a love song. A pretty straightforward romantic song about driving with a partner.

But in the fall tour – I have a daughter now who’s 9 – I had this weird feeling where suddenly my relationship with the song, it’s like someday I’m going to be old and I’m going to be in a car and she’s going to be the one driving me from someplace we were together. Maybe a dinner or a medical appointment or something.

My relationship to the song completely changed in an instant, and I was overcome with emotion in a new way that I’ve never even processed. So it’s kind of fun that the songs can change for us as we move along. They’re, in some ways, fixed in a period of time, but they’re also these kinds of living things that ask to be re-interfaced with.

Q: Just to fact check – you made ‘Transatlanticism’ after Ben (and producer-keyboardist Jimmy Tamborello and singer Jenny Lewis) had done the Postal Service record?

A: Yes, he had been writing all of the material for both of the records concurrently. It just so happened that as he was in the demoing process he started mailing stuff back and forth to Jimmy and that record came together first. And then we were recording while they were prepping that record for release.

Q: So when Ben was doing the Postal Service, what was the reaction within Death Cab? I’d imagine some bands might be nervous about their singer-songwriter working on a different project.

A: We were all very cool with it. We had a long history in this band of encouraging members to kind of moonlight and do other projects on the side in between Death Cab stuff. And Ben was always clear with us that this was never going to be something that was going to become his (main group).

Death Cab’s always been Ben’s sort of vehicle. It’s been his center. So there was no world where the Postal Service suddenly was going to be his new thing and Death Cab wasn’t.

The fact that (‘Give Up) went on to be a runaway hit I think surprised everyone, including Ben. Certainly there was some adjustment period where some fans were coming to Death Cab shows expecting to hear Postal Service songs and couldn’t quite get their heads wrapped around that we were separate bands. We didn’t even know that material, but that kind of faded and it was fine.

Q: Why do you think ‘Transatlantacism’ connected so strongly with fans and propelled Death Cab to the next level?

A: Some of it was a result of just the years we had put in on the road and with the previous three albums. But I think that record sort of really started to connect and take off because there was kind of a cultural shift that was happening in 2003-2004. You had Modest Mouse’s ‘Float On’ suddenly being a huge radio hit. You had the Shins showing up in major motion pictures. You had licensing opportunities for bit TV shows suddenly coming to a lot of bands that were our peers. That we had been touring with in relative obscurity for a while and suddenly were a little bit more of the musical conversation.

Q: I have to ask you about ‘The OC’ – your songs weren’t just in the background, the character Seth was a huge Death Cab fan and the band eventually played itself on the show.

A: It was just kind of surreal. It was this time when things were starting to happen, like I said, for bands of our ilk. The Shins had ‘New Slang’ in a McDonalds commercial. And there was luck. All of these opportunities that were coming our way. So it started with, ‘Hey, can we use a snippet of one of your songs in a show,’ and we said sure.

We didn’t know they would take the creative license to write us into the scripts. I think at first we were sort of like whatever. Then there was a moment when we were all a little bit slightly nervous about it. We would run into people that would be like, ‘Oh, “The OC” made you, you were nobodies until “The OC.”‘

But this was kind of concurrently happening with the rise of the internet, and so I think pretty people figured out our story and could understand what had happened. The thing that I think probably surprised us the most was just the reach that show had internationally. We showed up in Singapore and there are thousands of fans in Singapore suddenly. They’re like, ‘Oh, (we) saw you on “The OC.””

Q: How does this tour work? Does Death Cab always play first and then the Postal Service?

A: Yeah, it works out that way mainly because of the scarcity of the Postal Service touring and playing shows. They’re a bit more of a draw in that way, the valuable commodity. But also just the tone of that record is more upbeat and dance-centric in some ways, and the Death Cab record is a fairly moody journey from start to finish.

I think there was some question of whether or not Ben was going to be able to do it and what that would be like for him. Just sort of more psychologically. Physically, and having the stamina to pull that off was never in question because it kind of falls within our normal show length that we’d been doing for years.

Q: So when Death Cab finishes ‘Transatlanticism’ what do you and the the guys do when Ben goes back out for ‘Give Up’?

A: When Death Cab is on stage, we’re all in black. We’ve committed to a certain color palette in the lights. And then when Postal Service comes out they’re dressed all in white and the lights switch to a different color palate.

Dave (Depper) who plays guitar in Death Cab switches and plays with Postal Service as well. Jason (McGeer, Death Cab’s drummer) jumps up and plays on a couple of Postal Service songs live. And Zac (Rae, Death Cab’s keyboardist) and I, we switch clothes to white and we all come back at the end.

Q: It sounds different, but fun for you, too.

A: It has been fun for me, because, you know, I was the first tour manager on the very first national Postal Service tour years ago. So I have really fond memories of driving around in a van with Ben and Jenny and Jimmy. This is before the record even really started to hit. We’re playing these small little clubs.

And now it’s just been so fun to watch the show every night and watch all these people just have these really powerful emotional experiences with that record and those things. It’s a different form of nostalgia for me. I’m not actually playing music, but I can also track growth from the beginning until now. That’s nice, you know?

The Postal Service & Death Cab for Cutie

Due to high demand, the celebration will continue in 2024 with additional performances.

The bands announced that they will be adding 16 new dates to their Give Up & Transatlanticism 20th anniversary tour across North America. The announcement included gigs in Atlanta, Nashville, Tennessee, St. Louis, and Toronto. Slow Pulp, an outstanding indie-rock band, will open for them on select dates. For the show in Alpharetta, you can expect the band to be there

Of course, Benjamin Gibbard does both sets at the Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie gigs. Gibbard performs Give Up, the Postal Service's sole studio album, with Jenny Lewis and Jimmy Tamborello (aka Dntel).

The Postal Service, an indie pop supergroup established by Gibbard with musicians Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis, released "Give Up" in February 2003 as their debut and only album effort to date. The indietronica album went on to sell 1 million copies and peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart after spending 111 weeks on the roster.

Death Cab for Cutie, for their part, perform Transatlanticism. Gibbard, Nick Harmer, Dave Depper, Zac Rae, and Jason McGerr make up the band's lineup.

Death Cab for Cutie's fourth album, "Tranatlanticism," released in October 2003, marked the indie rock band's mainstream breakthrough. The album helped the band obtain a major-label deal with Atlantic Records in 2005, as it earned the group its first appearance on the Billboard 200 chart. Some of its songs have also appeared on the hit adolescent drama "The O.C."

“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003. The Postal Service record came out, Transatlanticism came out,” Gibbard said in a press release. “These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”

26 senators tell USPS to ‘pause all changes’ to delivery network until regulator’s review

A bipartisan group of 26 senators is calling on the Postal Service to halt its network modernization changes, until an independent regulator can weigh in.

the postal service tour opening act

A bipartisan group of 26 senators is calling on the Postal Service to halt its network modernization changes, until an independent regulator can weigh the merits of the plan.

The senators, in a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and the USPS Board of Governors, are raising concerns about persistent mail delays in regions where the agency has opened the first of many large, regional hubs to consolidate local processing operations.

“We call on USPS to pause all changes, pending a full study of this plan by its regulator,” senators wrote. “While USPS claims these changes overall will improve service while reducing costs, there is evidence to the contrary in locations where USPS has implemented changes so far.”

Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Gary Peters (D-Mich.) is leading the letter, along with Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.).

Join us June 25 and 26 at 1 p.m. EST for Federal News Network's Cloud Exchange, presented by Maximus, where we'll explore civilian agency progress in using the cloud to improve digital services and federal missions. | Register today!

Network modernization plans remain a central part of DeJoy’s plan to cut $5 billion of costs  and inefficient processes over the next two years, keep the agency from running out of cash and meet its long-term financial goals. It’s also a key part of his larger 10-year Delivering for America reform plan.

The Postal Regulatory Commission backed away from scrutinizing the 10-year plan in its entirety. But the independent regulatory agency recently asked USPS to start the process of obtaining an advisory opinion on its network modernization plans, or explain why such a review is unnecessary.

The outcome of such an advisory opinion would be nonbinding, and USPS could continue to implement its plan, regardless of the outcome. But senators are insisting that USPS go through the process before it continues with its consolidation plans.

“We are concerned about the impacts these changes have had so far, and the potential impacts that further changes could have. In regions where USPS has implemented significant changes, on-time mail delivery has declined,” lawmakers wrote. “In addition, it is not clear these changes will improve efficiency or costs.”

Federal News Network has reached out to USPS for comment. USPS spokesman David Walton said in a statement last week that USPS, at this stage, is not required to seek an advisory opinion from the Postal Regulatory Commission on the reform initiatives the agency has pursued so far, but will respond to the PRC “in more detail in this regard.”

In a recent HSGAC committee hearing , DeJoy told senators that USPS would consider requesting an advisory opinion, and said USPS would “slow down a lot of the moves” that are still in the works prior to Election Day.

“Disappointingly, the postmaster general did not commit to the scope of an advisory opinion, or to meaningfully stopping changes until further study is complete,” the senators wrote.

By contrast, DeJoy told members of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee last year that regulators scrutinizing USPS network modernization changes would slow implementation and “put this whole plan in jeopardy.”

Lawmakers’ growing opposition to USPS network changes echoes resistance the agency felt from Congress when it rolled out a similar plan more than a decade ago.

USPS began its last major consolidation effort in 2011 , when it reviewed hundreds of facilities as candidates for consolidation.

USPS, however, paused those plans to close and consolidate facilities nationwide, in response to a request made by multiple senators. The agency once again put its “network rationalization” plan on hold in 2015.

USPS, on its website, states the 2015 round of network rationalization was “highly successful,” cut annual costs by nearly $1 billion, and led to “no major service disruptions.”

DeJoy, however, has repeatedly pushed back on comparing his plan to previous USPS consolidation efforts. In an exclusive interview last February, DeJoy told Federal News Network that his plan focuses on opening new, more efficient facilities to replace plants that haven’t seen meaningful upgrades in decades.

“This is by no means a consolidation of good stuff. This is a rearrangement of the furniture. I imagine we’ll come out with more square footage deployed around the nation than before we started. It’s just not going to be wasteful square footage,” DeJoy said.  “I’m talking about waste, and handling things 17 times, instead of handling it once or twice — because it’s doable.”

USPS recently opened Regional Processing & Distribution Centers (RPDCs) in Atlanta, Georgia and Richmond, Virginia. These large facilities serve as hubs for long-distance transportation, where postal employees sort mail and packages going to other regions, as well as sort incoming packages for delivery in the region.

But in both cases, both regions have seen a significant drop in on-time deliveries since opening these mega-centers. DeJoy told lawmakers at the April 16 HSGAC hearing he’s still “optimistic about the changes,” and expects service to stabilize in impacted regions by this summer.

Senators, however, warn the USPS network modernization plan would have “disproportionate impacts on rural areas,” and would eliminate the possibility of overnight delivery for critical mail like medications and lab tests.

This impact on service, they warn, would stem from USPS shifting all outbound mail operations from local processing facilities to large region hubs. In some cases, a local community’s nearest mail processing site under this plan would be in another state.

Wednesday’s letter represents the strongest and most united push by Congress to rein USPS plans to shake up its nationwide delivery network. It also builds on statements lawmakers have made about USPS performance over the past few weeks.

Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who signed onto the letter, introduced a bill last week that would prohibit USPS from consolidating mail processing facilities unless the agency meets certain criteria.

The Protecting Access to Rural Carriers for Every Location (PARCEL) Act would bar USPS from moving existing processing operations across state lines, and would require USPS to conduct a “geographical review” that examines the impact of these changes.

“USPS leadership is messing with the wrong state, and I’m proud to be leading the bipartisan fight to keep postal services strong in rural America,” Tester said in a statement Wednesday.

Sens. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) didn’t add their names to the letter, but raised similar concerns about on-time mail delivery in their state, following the release of a recent USPS inspector general report.

USPS OIG found nearly 79,000 pieces of delayed mail at a Northern Minnesota post office in a December 2023 audit, well into the Postal Service’s year-end peak holiday season. Auditors said the delays occurred because headquarters management did not have a program in place to provide local post office managers with training on mail processing operations.

“When the mail is unreliable, it hurts Minnesotans, especially those who rely on the Postal Service to pay bills and receive paychecks and prescriptions.   Yet when I ask the Postal Service for information on these disruptions, they insist everything is fine,” Smith said in a statement Tuesday.

Klobuchar said the results of the USPS OIG audit are “very concerning,” and substantiate “troubling reports about significant delays and issues with local mail delivery.”

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) recently met with DeJoy to discuss service disruptions in the Richmond area. Warner told reporters last week that lawmakers and DeJoy both agree the mail delays in the Richmond area have been “totally unacceptable,” and that USPS could have done more to prepare customers and employees for the changes.

While concerned about recent mail delays, Warner said he understands USPS needs to modernize its operations to improve its long-term financial situation. Warner did not sign onto Wednesday’s letter calling for a pause in USPS network modernization.

“I do think if this reform is successfully implemented, we will see better service,” Warner said. “Back in 2020, when Mr. DeJoy was first appointed, I had real suspicions about him. I raised holy heck about him. We’ve got a whole new Postal Service board that was appointed by President Biden. And candidly, they have voted confidence in DeJoy.”

“I think he has tried to get his arms around what has been an operation that has not been updated in many ways for 20, 30, 40 years with technology,” he added. “And you’ve got, at this point, a declining revenue source of first-class mail.”
