Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Learn more about Thailand

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is tipping customary in Thailand?

Tipping isn’t customary in Thailand, but feel free to leave restaurants, drivers or service workers a small tip if the service has been particularly good. It’s always appreciated.

What is internet access like in Thailand?

The Internet can be accessed at hotels and internet cafes in large cities and tourist areas but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Thailand?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Thailand’s urban areas, but may not be available on some of the islands and in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Thailand?

Squat toilets are most common in Thailand, although western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Thailand. Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Thailand?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors and family-run restaurants in rural areas. Market stalls and street vendors will not accept credit cards. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Thailand?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Thailand?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Thailand but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Thailand travel reviews

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in thailand.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

Electricity and power supplies in Thailand

The entire country of Thailand runs on 220-volt currents and uses five types of electrical outlets — type A, B, C, F and O. Type A: mainly used in North and Central America, China and Japan. This socket only works with plug A. Type B: like type A but with an extra prong for grounding. This socket also works with plug A. Type C: also known as the standard "Euro" plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

Why Use a Travel Agency for Your Thailand Trip?

In this digital age, planning a trip to a foreign country could be as simple as a few clicks. But would you risk missing out on hidden gems and cultural nuances? By partnering with a trusted travel agency , you're ensuring that your Thailand trip is tailor-made to your preferences, ensuring that you get the most out of your travel experience.

Understanding Travel Agencies

Travel agencies are the unsung heroes of the tourism industry. They handle everything from flight and hotel bookings to providing itineraries, ensuring that travelers have a seamless and enjoyable journey.

What Does a Travel Agency Do?

A travel agency takes the stress out of travel planning. Their job isn't just about booking flights and accommodation. They listen to your needs, advise on the best travel times, provide local insights, and design tailor-made itineraries that suit your preferences. They handle the nitty-gritty details so you can focus on enjoying your trip.

Picture this – you're in Chiang Mai, known for its elephant sanctuaries. Instead of visiting a typical touristy elephant park, your travel agent, with their local knowledge, arranges a visit to an ethical sanctuary where you can feed, bathe, and spend quality time with these magnificent creatures, contributing positively to animal welfare. That's the personalized touch a travel agency can bring to your trip.

Benefits of Using Travel Agencies for International Travel

Using a travel agency, especially for international travel, offers numerous benefits. First, they save you time and stress. Navigating through hundreds of hotel reviews and trying to find the best deals can be overwhelming. Travel agencies have the expertise and resources to do that efficiently.

Second, travel agencies have insider information and connections that most individuals do not. They can get you better deals, exclusive access to experiences, and help with any travel issues that arise.

And finally, travel agencies provide a safety net. In case of unforeseen circumstances such as flight cancellations or health emergencies, they will be there to provide support and solutions.

I enjoyed working with Zicasso’s tour company. They were very responsive to my request and planned the perfect itinerary for my family. All the day tours and the guides were highly experienced and a lot of fun to spend time with. The elephant sanctuary was clearly a highlight, as were both boat tours of the amazing islands off Phuket. All the hotel accommodations and services were top-notch. We especially enjoyed the restaurant recommendations in each area. The trip app was very helpful and we appreciated the daily communication and document sharing of boarding passes. Overall, we truly enjoyed our first visit to Thailand. It is a very beautiful country, but more importantly, we found its people very friendly and welcoming. This was my fifth trip using Zicasso and they have never disappointed me or my grandchildren, who have accompanied me each time. They introduced me to our travel company and fulfilled all our needs and beyond.

My husband and I booked our honeymoon in Thailand with Zicasso's travel agency. We worked with our travel agent to plan it and the itinerary was incredible! I barely had to do anything. He booked all of our activities, hotels, and transfers. Transportation: We went to four locations (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, and Krabi) and each time we traveled internally, a guide would drop us off and pick us up. Truly door-to-door service! We also had a private guide and driver for each of our planned activities. Our domestic travel was so incredibly easy and we were super lucky to have all of them be on time and seamless! Our tour operator monitored all the flights and before our honeymoon, made sure to update a couple whose times had changed to ensure we got to our destinations with enough time. Activities: We wanted our honeymoon to be equal parts adventure and relaxation. We spent the first half of our trip in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We toured temples, did a street food tour, took a day trip to a floating market, spent a day learning to cook with a local family, spent a day with rescue elephants, and visited a gorgeous national park, to name a few things. All were private tours with private guides! A shout-out to our amazing guides in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We then spent intentionally unstructured time at the beaches of Koh Samui and Krabi (I’d recommend Krabi over Koh Samui (I was the one who added Koh Samui to the itinerary, but should have listened to our travel agent!). Krabi was so perfect for a honeymoon. Accommodations: All were five stars and beautiful! We had cute honeymoon welcome gifts everywhere we went. In summary, it was so worth working with our travel team to plan a stress-free honeymoon. We had an incredible time and couldn’t have loved it more!

As first-time travelers to Southeast Asia, we wanted a travel company that would tailor a trip to our wishes, provide seamlessness as we moved among the countries, and be responsive to daily changes that might occur. Zicasso's travel operator was all that and more. From the extremely helpful pre-trip consult to the back and forth regarding various possibilities, the proactive recommendations based upon deep experience in the areas, the carefully selected guides and drivers, and handling little wrinkles as they occurred, our travel agent and his team were absolutely tops. We loved each stop and, as a result, have become promoters of visiting such a fascinating and welcoming part of our world.

Although frequent travelers, this was our first trip to Asia. We greatly wanted to visit Thailand, but were uncertain how to proceed in planning our trip. Through Zicasso, we came into contact with our travel agent. We had great conversations with him about our interests, what we were hoping to experience in Thailand, and our travel style. He put together an initial travel itinerary, which we subsequently modified in follow-up conversations. Our agent was great to work with and we felt very involved in the process of setting up our trip. We have now returned from the trip and it was wonderful, or as my wife keeps telling people, magical. The attention to detail was impressive. The accommodations were first-rate. Travel occurred as planned, with air and land travel within Thailand going without a hitch. My wife has food allergies and was very concerned about how she would manage in Thailand. Our agent made sure our hotels and excursion providers were well informed of her dietary restrictions ahead of time and she was able to relax and enjoy herself without worry. As an example, when we went to the breakfast buffet at our hotel in Bangkok, a staff member approached us and went over their buffet, telling my wife which dishes to avoid. The best part of our trip was our guide. He was a wonderful person who took great joy in sharing his vast knowledge of Thailand with us. The excursions we took were enriched by his presence. Our agent was readily available to answer any questions we had as our travels progressed. We felt that his company’s resources were available to us throughout our travels and that he had our backs. I would like to emphasize that we were extremely pleased with the company and are highly recommending them as we recount our trip with friends and family. I would not hesitate to work with them again in planning future travels.

Zicasso's travel partner was so helpful in planning our anniversary trip to Japan. Every hotel selected had a fantastic location and she made it so easy to travel from city to city. We enjoyed all of our private tours, especially the cocktail/mixology tour in Tokyo. It introduced us to so many unique cocktail bars that we would have never found on our own. Similarly, our food tour in Osaka was amazing and we got to try foods we would never have had anywhere else, including stingray! We also greatly appreciated our private day tours of Tokyo and Kyoto. It would have been harder to navigate the city without them and they were perfect for hitting the must-see highlights in each city. We really cannot thank our agent enough for planning such a wonderful trip! The inclusion of portable WiFi and detailed maps was the icing on the cake and made everything run so seamlessly. I would 100% use them again when we return to Japan.

We had a very interesting 18-day trip to Laos and Vietnam in February. We worked closely with our Zicasso tour operator to plan a customized trip that included a number of stops and different experiences. We started in Laos, with the monasteries, waterfall/hiking, cooking classes in Luang Prabang, and outdoor activities in beautiful Vang Vieng (hiking, caving, and kayaking). We spent the next 13 days in Vietnam – chaotic Hanoi; beautiful Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, with the fantastic limestone karsts; historic Hue, the Imperial City; picturesque Hoi An, with the serene and spectacular resort; ending up in Saigon for a day. We had three knowledgeable guides with different personalities and backgrounds – Laos, northern Vietnam, and central Vietnam. We had interesting and detailed discussions which enhanced our understanding of the history of the region, as well as the US impact on Laos and Vietnam. Although we liked our guides, we realized they were independent contractors and did not really have any input in our day-to-day itinerary (which did have changes from the original). Although most of the changes were fine, we would have liked better communication – letting us know about the changes and options. As a result, we spent more time managing each day's itinerary with our guides to ensure we liked the next day's itinerary. In summary, we truly liked and enjoyed our well-planned trip.

TAT and Traveloka sign Memorandum of Agreement to enhance Thai tourism promotion

The strategic collaboration covers marketing, sustainability, and data sharing to boost inbound and domestic tourism in thailand..

Photo of TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 27 May 2024 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Traveloka, Southeast Asia’s leading travel platform, today signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to enhance the travel platform’s commitment to Thailand’s tourism industry. Both parties will collaborate to promote inbound and domestic tourism, including secondary destinations.

The MOA provides the legal framework for Traveloka to collaborate with the TAT on dual marketing campaigns, sustainability initiatives and travel insights. This agreement also allows Traveloka to collaborate directly with the TAT Head Office in Bangkok and all domestic and overseas offices. This will further strengthen Traveloka’s support of the Thai travel industry through its extensive reach and expertise.

Ms Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said , “This MOA marks a strategic collaboration with Traveloka, our long-term partner who has been supporting us in promoting secondary cities and inbound travel. The agreement will enable us to expand the scope of our partnership. In addition, this enhanced partnership with Traveloka will help solidify Thailand’s position as an industry leader in moving towards experience-based and sustainable tourism. This is in alignment with TAT’s direction to elevate Thailand’s travel industry and enhance its competitive advantage.”

The recent joint campaign, ‘Unveiling Thailand’s Treasure’, in which Traveloka played a crucial role, was successfully implemented this year. This collaboration extends TAT’s ongoing efforts to promote secondary cities and emerging destinations across Thailand.

“Traveloka is very pleased to support the policy to drive tourism for sustainable economic growth. From January to March, the campaign ‘Unveiling Thailand’s Treasure,’ in collaboration with the TAT, was highly successful in showcasing the potential of lesser-known tourist destinations to a wider audience,” Mr. Albert Albert, Traveloka Co-founder, said. “According to last year’s statistics, Traveloka saw an increase in domestic market sales, both in flights and accommodations, especially during Chinese New Year and Songkran festivals in Bangkok and its vicinity, as well as in major tourist provinces like Chiang Mai, Songkhla (Hat Yai), and Udon Thani. This reflects the continued demand for domestic travel, signalling positive growth for the local economy.”

TAT’s campaign has broadened the spectrum of tourism activities, spanning economic advantages to emerging destinations. It also promotes the exploration of secondary cities, uncovering ‘Hidden Gems’ that bring a fresh and interesting dimension to travel itineraries.

Traveloka is well positioned to support this, offering flights, accommodation, and local attractions to enhance the customers’ experiences that are available under “Attractions & Activities” in the Traveloka app. The market potential for international travellers is also substantial and drawing them to visit and explore Thailand can enhance our global standing as the go-to travel platform.

In addition, Traveloka witnessed a significant demand in the domestic market, especially as the lunar new year and Songkran holidays approached, with Bangkok Metropolitan emerging as the leading domestic source city, followed by Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, and Udon Thani. Utilising these data-driven insights will enable both parties to identify customer’s travel needs and aspirations while collaborating to promote sustainable tourism practices that contribute to the well-being of local Thai communities.

“This partnership proves the robust relationship between Traveloka and the TAT. We are confident that together we can continue to promote Thailand as a world-class travel destination,” Mr. Albert concluded.

This year, TAT has set a target of generating 3 trillion Baht, with 1.92 trillion Baht coming from international tourism and 1.08 trillion Baht from domestic tourism. Last year, Thailand welcomed 28 million visitors, generating a 1.2 trillion Baht revenue.

Thailand falls by more than 10 places in tourism ranking

PUBLISHED : 27 May 2024 at 18:55

WRITER: Narumon Kasemsuk

Tourism operators are disappointed with the government for failing to improve the country’s position in the travel and tourism development index, after Thailand dropped to 47th place, from 36th, in the latest World Economic Forum (WEF) index.

The decrease was also larger than the decline seen in the 2021 index, when Thailand fell from 35th to 36th place, which was attributed to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among Southeast Asian nations, three countries outperformed Thailand – Singapore, which was ranked 13th, followed by Indonesia (22nd) and Malaysia (35th). Compared to 2019, Thailand also fell by six spots and lagged the global average of 117 countries by 3.9%.

Thailand, which was classified as an upper-middle income country in this index, had the lowest score in tourist services and infrastructure at 2.18 of 7, while the overall index of infrastructure and services also secured a low average score of 3.61.

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (Atta), said the index proved that the post-pandemic tourism rebound was dependent on existing selling points rather than improving and developing services and infrastructure.

“Since the previous government, we’ve been disappointed that the master plan for developing the tourism industry didn’t take shape. The current government might have a good initiative to lure tourists, such as the visa-free scheme, but in terms of planning for an improvement in infrastructure and services, we still haven’t see a difference from the previous government,” he said.

Mr Sisdivachr said Atta and other tourism associations under the Federation of Thai Tourism Associations will submit a white paper to Tourism Minister Sermsak Pongpanich on May 30 when he is scheduled to join Atta’s monthly meeting.

The white paper sets out threats and obstacles to the development of the tourism industry in Thailand, which requires a concrete long-term plan, along with greater effort and collaboration from all stakeholders, both in the public and private sectors.

Mr Sisdivachr said the current government has wasted too much time on visiting provinces during the cabinet meeting roadshows over the past few months, which meant the tourism minister was not able to focus on his core responsibility, which is to improve the quality of the tourism experience.

He said not every province that the cabinet visited has the potential to boost its tourism revenue.

Instead of providing support that lacks focus, the government should select provinces that offer great potential in terms of attractions and resources and should have started planning necessary infrastructure since the start by gauging possible demand in each province, such as enhancing their air and land connectivity.

He said that over the past nine months, the tourism industry has not been able to rapidly progress as the tourism minister’s position had been shuffled, resulting in a lack of continuity.

“If the current government can still not expedite the tourism development plan or solve existing obstacles, our ranking in the WEF index might again drop lower than this,” said Mr Sisdivachr.

Thailand approves longer visa stays for students and tourists to boost tourism sector

According to government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke, starting in June, travellers from 93 countries will be allowed to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days, an increase from the current 57 nations. Additionally, more travellers will now be eligible for visas on arrival.

In a bid to revitalise its tourism sector amid varied economic challenges, Thailand's government has announced extended visa stay periods for a variety of visitors. The new measures that were approved on Tuesday, include longer stays for tourists, postgraduate students and even  remote workers, as well as improved visa conditions for retirees.

In addition to easing insurance requirements for retirees wishing to remain in Thailand, postgraduate students will now be able to stay one additional year following graduation. With the extension of stay limitations for on-arrival visas to 60 days from 30 days, Thailand hopes to draw in more tourists, especially from its primary and fastest-growing markets. Additionally, "digital nomad" visas for independent contractors and remote workers will now be valid for five years, with a 180-day maximum stay each visit. Tourism plays a vital role in Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, serving as a significant source of employment.

Thailand recorded 14.3 million tourists from January to May 26 this year and is targeting a record 40 million foreign arrivals for the full year, with expected revenue of 3.5 trillion baht ($95.73 billion). In 2019, prior to the pandemic, Thailand welcomed a record 39.9 million arrivals, generating 1.91 trillion baht in revenue.

Thailand's new finance minister may steady skittish markets

By Ankur Banerjee and Rae Wee

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Thailand's new finance minister has caught investor attention with a more conciliatory approach to the central bank, opening a window for policy coordination to support battered markets.

Thailand's economy, the second-largest in Southeast Asia and heavily dependent on tourism, has struggled as China's slowdown has held visitor numbers beneath pre-pandemic peaks, while decade-high interest rates throttle domestic spending.

The government, pressing for urgent rate cuts, has been at loggerheads with monetary policymakers concerned about debt. Meanwhile, an underperforming economy and fractious politics have led foreign investors to sell down stocks and bonds.

Some $5.5 billion in net outflows from Thai stocks last year has been followed by another $1.9 billion in net selling in 2024. The benchmark SET index is down 4% this year and touched three-year lows, making it the worst performer in Asia.

A calmer tone from Pichai Chunhavajira, a former Bank of Thailand board member appointed finance minister last month is a potential circuit breaker, market participants say, which could give policymakers more room for stimulus and help sentiment.

"Under FM Pichai, the government has been less combative toward the central bank as the administration appears to be leaning on fiscal spending and liquidity injections to support the economy," said Nicholas Chia, Asia macro strategist at Standard Chartered in Singapore.

Thailand's cabinet this week approved a plan to boost the 2024 fiscal budget by 122 billion baht ($3.3 billion), to help finance a handout scheme, while Pichai said the government was planning other short-term measures to revive growth.

Pichai has said he has a duty to work with the central bank and there are no plans to weaken its independence while public calls from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for rate cuts have paused. The central bank meets to set rates on June 12.

"I think he (Pichai) certainly understands the culture of the people at the Bank of Thailand," former finance minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala told the Reuters Global Markets Forum last week.

"I think the opportunity for a better relationship going forward is now present."

Two main factors are keeping the Bank of Thailand from cutting.

One is global: The U.S. Fed Funds rate is above 5% while Thai rates are at 2.5%. A cut in Thailand would likely add pressure on the baht, which has been sliding this year and is the region's second-worst after the Japanese yen with a 7% drop on the dollar.

Another is structural: A 90% household debt-to-GDP ratio is high by regional standards, dampening the pass-through from lower interest rates to higher growth which was already fuzzy in an economy so exposed to world trends in travel and demand.

"You can try to entice people to spend now by lowering the cost of money and hopefully they borrow more and then consume or invest," said Pongtharin Sapayanon, abrdn's head of Thai fixed income and asset allocation in Bangkok.

"But the big, big assumption here is the capital that is raised from that goes into something productive," he said.

Pongtharin is underweight on Thailand and expects at best a 25 basis point cut this year.

Daniel Tan, portfolio manager at Grasshopper Asset Management, said that though the economy is growing more slowly than others in Asia, a cut may only come in mid-2025 against the backdrop of expected accelerated government spending.

Still, some conditions are beginning to fall into place and better ties with the government may allow policymakers to act swiftly once the U.S. Federal Reserve begins to cut rates, which would likely come in tandem with investment.

Inflation in Thailand has run below the central bank's target for a year and last month the finance ministry cut its growth target to 2.4% from 2.8% previously.

Domestic banks last month cut lending rates by 25 basis points for vulnerable groups for a period of six months, following a plea from the prime minister.

"We think these cuts by banks suggest they also see the economy as weak and needs monetary accommodation," said Charnon Boonnuch, an ASEAN economist at Nomura.
