The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line) is a great way to travel between Asakusa and the Tokyo Bay Area. You’ll see a totally different side of Tokyo and you’ll get a break from subways and trains.

The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line in Japanese) connects several piers around the Tokyo Bay Area (Hinode, Hama Rikyu, Nihonbashi, Odaiba and Toyosu) with Asakusa (which is convenient for Senso-ji Temple and close to the museum district of Ueno, as well as Tokyo Sky Tree).

Odaiba sky tree course.

"Daiba Sky tree course" is a sightseeing course on a shared boat which departs from Azumabashi-sanbashi. Experience "Daiba" and "Tokyo Sky Tree", two of the most popular sightseeing spots in Tokyo, on the same trip. This course is also the most popular among Japanese tourists.

The Himiko & Hotaluna

These cruises feature a variety of boats, but the most popular boats are the futuristic “Himiko” and “Hotaluna” with their shiny metallic surfaces and curved panoramic windows.

These two boats were both designed by the manga and anime artist Leiji Matsumoto, who is famous for his work on Space Battleship Yamato and Space Pirate Captain Harlock . Fares for the Himiko and Hotaluna are higher than for regular boats. Also these two boats have regular maintenance days when they are unavailable, so if you especially want to ride these, you should check the online schedule before you go.

Tokyo Cruise Asakusa Pier viewed from the Sumida River

Asakusa to Hamarikyu

This cruise takes about 35 minutes to reach the Hamarikyu Gardens, a landscaped public park with a pond and traditional tea house. The admission fee for the gardens is included in the fare for the cruise. There are between eight and ten services a day on this route between 9.50 and 15.20. Regular fares are 980 yen for adults and 370 yen for children.

The “Ryoma” at Asakusa Pier

Asakusa to Hinode Pier

This cruise takes about 40 minutes to reach Hinode Pier. This location is convenient for two stations: Hinode Station for the Yurikamome Line and Hamamatsucho Station for the Tokyo Monorail and JR East’s Yamanote and Keihintohoku lines. There are around 20 services a day on this route between 9.50 and 19.15. Regular fares to Hinode Pier are 780 yen for adults and 390 yen for children. There are also some Hotaluna services which cost 1,080 yen for adults and 690 yen for children.

Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park

This cruise takes about 70 minutes to reach Odaiba Seaside Park. Here you can enjoy a walk on the beach, plentiful shopping and dining facilities, and scenic views over Tokyo Bay. There are around 18 services a day on this route between 9.50 and 17.30. A transfer may be necessary at Hinode Pier. Regular fares are 1,260 yen for adults and 630 yen for children. There are also some Hotaluna and Himiko services on this route which are priced at 1,560 yen for adults and 930 yen for children. These services are a little faster than regular servies; the Hotaluna takes 60 minutes and the Himiko takes just 50 minutes to cover the same distance.

Asakusa to Toyosu

There are two regular Himiko services to Toyosu which depart from Asakusa Pier at 13.20 and 15.10. The Himiko takes about 70 minutes to reach Toyosu. The main attraction here is the Lalaport shopping mall, which includes a cinema, and restaurants as well as shops (many of which offer tax-free shopping to overseas visitors. Tokyo Gas Science Museum is also nearby. Fares on this route are 2,040 yen for adults and 1,170 yen for children. These services to Toyosu do not run between January 15th and February 5th.

The Asakusa Pier is easily accessible as it is just a 3 minute walk from the Tobu, Toei, and Tokyo Metro Asakusa Stations. Inside the Tokyo Cruise building, cruise tickets can be bought from automatic ticket machines. These machines have English guidance but staff will be happy to help you out if you need assistance. There is also English signage throughout so that you know where to wait for your boat.

Take a tour of the Sumida River and Odaiba on a course that runs from Asakusa to Odaiba, passing under the Rainbow Bridge. Take in the Tokyo Sky Tree, Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Port and other notable bridges and cityscapes as you cruise along the Sumida River.

For Asakusa / Toyosu

Travel north along the Sumida River and take in views of bridges as you head toward Asakusa. Enjoy city scenery and feel the sea breeze as you travel from Toyosu to WATERS takeshiba.

Himiko and Urban Launch service is currently suspended.

Travel north along the Sumida River and take in views of bridges as you head toward Asakusa. Service is provided by two types of ship: Himiko, which features futuristic contours, and Urban Launch, with a cruise-ship atmosphere where you can feel the sea breeze.

Himiko looks like a spacecraft, complete with a futuristic interior. It’s perfect for taking in the sights of Tokyo, even in the rain, midsummer heat or on cold winter days.

Very popular with tourists when the good weather returns, Tokyo Bay cruises are a good way to discover the Japanese capital.

Fun and unusual, cruises in Tokyo offer another point of view on the city and allow you to discover the little secrets of the river routes of the metropolis. However, these cruises are generally not accessible to all budgets. And the prices go up very quickly when it comes to admiring the Tokyo Skytree from the bay.

Fortunately, some cruises offer quite affordable alternatives to the large pleasure boats that operate on the Sumida. This is particularly the case of the ''Asakusa-Hinode Pier'' cruise from the Tokyo Cruise company , which connects Asakusa to the Hinode pier, and which offers to go up the course of the Tokyo River for only 780 yen per person. (5.98 euros) !

Two types of boats thus circulate on the waters of the capital: the yakatabune , traditional barges whose lanterns and tatami floor will delight boaters looking for the picturesque, and the nôryôsen , small , more modern cruise ships .

The journeys are then very varied and can be done day or night , further increasing the tourist possibilities that Tokyo Bay has to offer.

The yakatabune also welcome visitors in the afternoon for lunches and walks along the water.

Gastronomic dinners with champagne , cocktail evenings, or even yukata evenings in July, special events are even organized throughout the year by the company.

Lasting two to three hours , these ''luxury'' cruises have a cost. And it will generally be necessary to pay between 4,000 and 10,000 yen per person (between 3 0.70 and 76.76 euros ) to hope to benefit from it.

Fortunately, some cruises offer much more affordable circuits!

Like the ''Asakusa-Hinode Pier'' cruise, which offers a ''lightning'' tour of the bay in 55 minutes for less than 800 yen ( 6.14 euros ).

Discovering the Sumida

A tasty mix between the yakatabune and the nôryôsen, the C osmos used for the cruise is a small barge 15 m long which aims to be modern and functional. With a basement for dinners , a cabin to admire the view when it's gray, and an open roof , this small pleasure boat is ideal for the more modest tours offered by " Tokyo Cruise ".

Departing from Azumabashi Bridge (Asakusa) , the "Asakusa-Hinode Pier" cruise travels along the Sumida River to Hinode Pier before looping back to Asakusa Old Quarter.

A nice route, which allows boaters to discover the beauties of Tokyo's most famous river.

From the Hama-Rikyu gardens to the Tokyo Skytree via the St-Luke Garden , a complex of buildings of fifty floors each bordering the Sumida, this cruise is as pleasant by day as by night .

And it is one of the activities not to be missed in the spring, since it offers an unobstructed view of the cherry blossoms that line the banks of the capital.

A little advice, however, if you want to make the most of the cruise: remember to board just before sunset! This will allow you not only to enjoy the view of Tokyo by day on the outward journey, but also the joys of the bay illuminated by the buildings and the thirteen bridges that the Cosmo crosses on the way back.

Tokyo Water Bus

Located on a bay and covered with a network of rivers and canals, Tokyo has a few boat services that tourists may find useful. The Water Bus (����o�X, Suijō Basu) can be an enjoyable alternative to trains or subways when traveling between destinations near the water.

The locations most notably convenient for water bus access are the man-made islands of Tokyo Bay, especially Odaiba . Many water buses also travel along the Sumida River, one of the city's most famous rivers. The many bridges that span the river have each a different design. Boats along the river provide access to Asakusa and Ryogoku .

The coronavirus pandemic had a severe impact on the water buses, and services remain considerably reduced compared to pre-corona times. On the most popular lines, departures can be close to hourly, but on many other sections, there are only few connections per day, and service is completely suspended on certain days.

Most of the water buses are operated by the Tokyo Cruise Ship Company . Its main line connects Asakusa with Odaiba . Besides direct connections, some boats stop along the way at Hama Rikyu (in the direction of Hinode only), Hinode and Toyosu (in the direction of Asakusa only). There are also 30-minute mini cruises, which start and end in Asakusa. The cost depends on the section traveled and is typically between 1000 and 2500 yen. Note that the company will turn cashless on May 8, 2024. Acceptable payment methods will be credit cards, IC cards and selected other digital payment systems.

Some other water bus lines are operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association. The Mizube Cruise Line travels from Asakusa on the Sumida River via Ryogoku to Odaiba . Only on selected days, service is also provided between Odaiba and Kasai Rinkai Park .

There are some other cruises available that include lunch or dinner for customers to enjoy a meal on the water. These cruises usually take about two hours and make a round trip that ends at the departure point. Prices depend on the meal and typically vary from 6,000 to 15,000 yen.

Getting there and around

Asakusa Pier The pier is located along the Sumida River, just beside the Asakusa Stations of the Ginza Subway Line and the Tobu Line or a five minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Asakusa Subway Line. More detailed access information can be found on the Asakusa page .

Odaiba Pier The pier is located just in front of the Aquacity Odaiba shopping mall, about a five minute walk from either Daiba Station or Odaiba-Kaihinkoen Station on the Yurikamome Line. More detailed access information can be found on the Odaiba page .

Hinode Pier The pier is a five minute walk north from Hinode Station on the Yurikamome Line, which can be accessed from Shimbashi Station (5 minutes, 260 yen, along the JR Yamanote Line ).

Hama Rikyu Pier The pier is located within Hama Rikyu garden . Currently it is not possible to board water buses at Hama Rikyu, but only to get off.

The course connecting Asakusa to Odaiba, a popular sightseeing spot, runs regularly every day. There are also irregular services such as night cruises to enjoy the night view of Odaiba, event services, lunch/ dinner cruise, and charter services.

Sumida River and Asakusa Cruises

Enjoy relaxing area around sumida river.

When visiting Asakusa, you have to see the Sumida river. Its wide banks and monumental bridges impress every tourist. The view is stunning and it is a perfect place to relax and sit for a moment. You can have lunch while watching boats passing by or just take a walk along the shore and enjoy the closeness of the water.

One great thing about Sumida river is that you can cruise it by ship. Tokyo Cruise offers futuristic looking boats to take you for a ride along the Sumida river. There are a few routes. Sumidagawa River Line is the shortest one and takes you to Hamarikyu Gardens, Hinode Pier and back to Asakusa. Tokyo Big Sight-Palette Town Line brings you to the most popular Odaiba spots. If you are in a hurry, there are some direct lines to Odaiba too. You can make a reservation online. To buy tickets right before the departure, go to Tokyo Cruise Center in Asakusa. It is a modern pier with a small cafe to order drinks while waiting for a boat.

Mizube Line, also called Tokyo Waterway line, belongs to another company and provides a slightly longer ride with more stops to Odaiba and Askakusa. They also navigate around the Arakawa river, Odaiba area and Kasai Rinkai Park. Other than general transportation service, they offer many special cruises to enjoy cherry blossoms in Spring and fireworks in Summer. Chartering of water-buses is also available. Boat rides can take up to two hours and they are a great way to see Tokyo from a different perspective.

The banks of the Sumida river are also perfect for jogging, cycling and family walks. It is a different way of sightseeing; sometimes more relaxing as the river side is usually less crowded than popular tourist venues. Some sites like Asahi Breweries building, Tokyo Skytower or charming houseboats are easier seen from the river bed. When strolling along the river, you should definitely stop at the Sumida Park. Another interesting spot, located in a walking distance from Asakusa, is Ryogoku Kokugikan, the place where sumo tournaments are held. When visiting Tokyo, you definitely have to see Sumida river!

1. Sensoji Temple

Sensoji Temple (浅草寺) is an ancient Buddhist temple in Tokyo and one of the most visited sightseeing spots in Japan. Being an important center of both religious faith and touristic landmark, Sensoji Temple draws over 30 million worshippers and tourists every year.

Sensoji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo and originally built in 7th century. Nakamise Shopping Street (仲見世通り) is an approx 250m long approach that connects the front gate (Kaminarimon Gate) and the inner gate (Hozomon Gate) of Sensoji Temple. Nakamise  has a long history and is believed to be established in early 18th century when locals of Asakusa were granted permission to open shops on the approach to the temple. Today, the street is lined by dozens of local shops and food stalls on both sides and is a great place to taste local flavour and shop souvenirs, especially if you want to find something traditional.

Hoppy Street (ホッピー通り) is a street in Asakusa that is packed with small, nostalgic izakaya bars. The lively drinking alley is one of the most popular spots for nightlife in Tokyo. 5. Information Centre

If you are going to visit Asakusa for the first time and want to get some tourist information, it’s recommended to make your way to Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center (浅草文化観光センター) . The modern landmark of Asakusa is free to enter and provides tourist information in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean as well as organizing tours and cultural experiences for tourists. There are also free wifi and use of PC with the internet. The cool 8-story building is built by the famous Japanese architecture, Kengo Kuma. It has a cafe, exhibition hall, money exchange, meeting rooms, nursing room for babies. On the top floor, there is an observation deck offering a great view of Nakamise Street and Sensoji Temple .

Kappabashi (かっぱ橋) is a shopping street stretching between Asakusa and Ueno. You can find all kinds of food-related items in Kappabashi except for fresh food such as knives, pans, dishes, cooking utensils, shop signs, tables, chairs, food samples and more. Sumida Park (隅田公園) is a public park situated along Sumida River. The riverfront park boasts an area of approx 80, 000 square meters on both sides of the river. The park can be accessed by 5 mins walk from Asakusa Station. Sumida Park is one of the most popular spots for cherry blossom viewing in Tokyo as there are about 700 cherry trees planted along the river. 16. Hanayashiki

Hanayashiki (花やしき) is the oldest amusement park in Japan that originally opened as a botanical garden in 1853 at the end of Edo period. The 170 years-old park is located in the neighbourhood of Asakusa and just a couple of minutes walk from Sensoji Temple. The retro and nostalgic park offers a wide variety of attractions, rides (including Japan’s oldest roller coaster) and eataries in a space of 5,800 square metres, which can be enjoyed by both adults and kids.

Sanja Matsuri (三社祭) or Sanja Festival is one of the three great Shinto festivals in Tokyo and is held annually for 3 days on the third weekend of May. The festival takes place in Asakusa Shrine which is located near Sensoji Temple, and the event is held in honor of Hinokuma Hamanari, Hinokuma Takenari and Hajino Nakatomo, the three men who founded Senso-ji Temple . It’s known as the largest and wildest festivals in Tokyo and draws over 2 million viewers in 3 days every year. Sumida Aquarium (すみだ水族館) is an urban aquarium located on the 5th and 6th floors of Tokyo Skytree. The aquarium is home to approx 7,000 sea creatures of 260 species including penguins, seals, jellyfish and shark, and displays them in 9 divided sections. There is a 6m deep fish tank called the “Water’s Blessing Tokyo Tank” which is designed to represent the ocean world of the Ogasawara Isands, a World Natural Heritage site.

Your tour begins as you board your motorcoach for a scenic, 30-minute drive to fascinating Tokyo center. Your route affords you a glimpse at the world's largest city, taking in such sites as the modern Fuji Television, Ginza district and other landmarks in the city's center. Revel in the exotic scenery as you make your way to Meiji Shrine, which you'll enter through one of Japan's largest torii gates. Emperor Meiji was instrumental in opening Japan to the outside world in the late 1800s, ushering in the Meiji Restoration that brought the rule of the Tokugawa (shogun) government to an end. After the deaths of the emperor and empress, the Meiji Shrine was constructed to enshrine their souls. It was dedicated on November 1, 1920. Your tour continues to Sensoji Temple (Asakusa Kannon Temple). Legend has it that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon out of the Sumida River, then they made the temple to enshrine the statue. Consequently, Sensoji was built there for the goddess of Kannon. You'll enter through the Nitenmon or Kaminarimon Gate, bedecked, with a huge red paper lantern, to view the shrine. Your guided tour also strolls down Nakamise-dori, the Street of Inside Shops, which is brimming with traditional stalls selling everything from food and souvenirs, to handmade crafts like yukata and folding fans. Grab a snack before rejoining your tour coach for going back to the pier.
