ABOUT STEPHEN CRAFTI
With more than 40 books to his name and an unrivalled enthusiasm for design, Stephen Crafti is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to Australian and international architecture.
Where it all began – High Fashion
Although formally trained in Town Planning, Stephen’s passion has always been design. In the 1980s, he designed and manufactured high fashion knitwear under the label ‘Crafti’, supplying leading retailers in Melbourne and Sydney (Georges of Melbourne, Masons, Robby Ingham Sydney and Saba, to name a few).
Obsession Transition – the Built Environment
When he purchased a significant Modernist 1950s residence in Melbourne’s North Balwyn in 1991 (designed by Montgomery King & Trengove), Stephen’s design fascination shifted to the built environment. While he studied the history of his own home, Stephen began writing about post-war (post-1945) architecture. With his interest and knowledge in the subject broadening, Stephen was soon penning features about all forms of contemporary design. In the last three decades, he has submitted thousands of articles covering architecture, furniture, fashion and the decorative arts to an impressive range of publications.
Design Tours, Books and Editorial
Today Stephen shares his expertise and passion in carefully curated design tours in Melbourne, Sydney and abroad. He continues to write architectural books , and regularly contributes editorial to a number of Australian newspapers. Stephen’s features are frequently published in a range of local and international magazines, and he produces a fortnightly podcast ( Talking Design ) with RMIT University.
ARCHITECTURAL TOURS
Stephen leads regular tours in Melbourne, Sydney and abroad, sharing his favourite architectural delights (including his own award-winning home) with a generous dose of design inspiration.
Stephen’s obsession with architecture and design is well-documented in dozens of published books. Discover his suite of home-inspired editions here.
Architecture, furniture, fashion and the decorative arts are Stephen’s favourite topics, and he regularly contributes to a wide range of print and online publications.
ABOUT STEPHEN’S HOME
Guests attending Stephen’s Melbourne tour occasionally have the pleasure of visiting his own award-winning residence. This outstanding abode was redesigned by Robert Simeoni Architects, who worked closely with Stephen to combine ground floor and first-floor apartments of the 1930s duplex into a single residence. The renovation design was acknowledged at the AIA Victorian Chapter Awards in 2019, securing two coveted awards for the Architects.

A Legendary Local Design Writer’s Renovated 1930s Home
As one of Australia’s most prominent architecture and design writers, it’s safe to say Stephen Crafti has seen his fair share of stunning homes. So it comes as no surprise his personal home in South Yarra is a sophisticated, architectural haven!
Previously two separate 1930s apartments, Stephen engaged Robert Simeoni Architects to unite the two, forming a cohesive single residence with a private aspect. Insertions crafted from steel and fluted glass draw on the character of the original art deco architecture, while mirroring the ‘quietness’ and muted light of the original dwellings.

‘In my mind the rear courtyard and its proportions reminded me instinctively of Bramante’s Tempietto and its reverberating quality – a quality and a sense of suspension I was keen to explore and capture from within the courtyard space,’ says the architect Robert Simeoni. Photo – Derek Swalwell

It’s hard to imagine now, but until recently, this now renovated 1930s property was actually two completely separate apartments. Despite their disjointed state with no internal access, design writer Stephen Crafti had been living across both apartments for years, until finally engaging Robert Simeoni Architects to combine the two.
The objective was to cohesively amalgamate the apartments by retaining the existing fabric wherever possible, while inserting new elements clearly distinguishable from the property’s original features. While the apartments weren’t heritage protected, they were treated as such during the design process. ‘The aim of not trying to do too much, or as the Burra Charter suggests “as much as necessary, as little as possible” informed the thinking behind the design,’ says Robert of Robert Simeoni Architects.
A compact, dark stained timber and raw steel staircase was introduced to connect the two previously separate levels of the building. This staircase is located in the former bathroom of each apartment, minimising the need for costly and potentially unsympathetic internal alterations.
The rear of the property contains a new concrete floored addition where the dining, kitchen and laundry facilities are positioned. This addition forms a double height volume, incorporating a high level window, and ground level steel-framed windows, with combination of clear and opaque glazing. Standing in the rear courtyard, one can see only the zig-zag form of this new addition that shelters the spaces within. ‘In my mind, the rear courtyard and its proportions reminded me instinctively of Bramante’s Tempietto and its reverberating quality – a quality and a sense of suspension I was keen to explore and capture from within the courtyard space,’ says Robert.
A key consideration of this project was retaining the home’s existing quiet interiors and muted light. The use of fluted glass was developed in response to this, as well as the creation of long diagonal views throughout the shallow floor plan. These views expand the feeling of the existing house and its circulation paths, ‘creating a reordering of the duplex while not materially affecting the integrity of the original,’ as Robert describes.
Light fittings and furnishings, including a number of bespoke items created for the project by Suzie Stanford , were selected to inject considered, contemporary details into the space, whilst respecting the original fabric of the building.
This is a home that truly rejects current design trends in favour of honouring the integrity of the original building and the unique desires of its occupants. While undoubtedly impressive and sophisticated in its design, there’s an inherent quietness to the aesthetic that’s wholeheartedly refreshing to observe.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ernie Els won the Principal Charity Classic on Sunday for his fourth career PGA Tour Champions victory, closing with a 7-under 65 at Wakonda Club to beat defending champion Stephen Ames by two strokes.
Tied with Rod Pampling for the second-round lead, Els eagled the par-5 15th and had five birdies in his bogey-free final round. The 54-year-old Hall of Famer from South Africa finished at 21-under 195 for his first victory since March 2023 .
“It’s very special,” Els said. “You know, I haven’t won for a while. I’ve had quite a few chances, but it gets tougher when you don’t get it over the line. So today was very, very competitive. A lot of players, a lot of great players. I just took my chance when it came.”
Ames shot 66. He leads the tour with two victories this season.
Bernard Langer tied for third at 17 under after a 68. Making his fourth start since returning from an Achilles injury, the 66-year-old German star is the tour’s career victory leader with 46.
Pampling (69) and David Duval (67) also were 17 under.

They will be joined by six members of the World Golf Hall of Fame: Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, José María Olazábal and Vijay Singh. Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson Want All the (Sneaker) Smoke
The nba champions-turned-podcast-hosts sat down with us to talk about their show and its upcoming tour, sneakers and their nba finals predictions..
You are reading your free article for this month. Members-only
In the ever-evolving sports media landscape, one that is increasingly-fixated on eye-catching headlines, the All the Smoke podcast has emphasized authenticity as the foundation of its conversations. Led by former NBA champions Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson , who are each known for their unapologetic attitudes, the duo have crafted a space for athletes and media personalities to keep it real with them — bringing on everyone from Steph Curry to Shannon Sharpe in their 231 episodes to date.
With the podcast’s fifth anniversary quickly approaching, they teamed up with renowned sneaker customizer The Shoe Surgeon to craft an All the Smoke -themed take on the Air Jordan 4 — one of Jackson’s favorite Air Jordans. Reminiscent of 2022’s “Black Canvas” thanks to its color blocking, the kicks serve as a fitting tribute to the podcast with a premium build joined by references to the show scattered throughout, including a “10-21-19” hit at the lateral heel — the date of the podcast’s first episode. The two noted that it was important to maintain the classic appeal of the AJ4 while adding their own flair to it with elements like the All the Smoke branding and the “smoked out” Air unit.
