Picard's inquiry class comes to star trek online.

star trek online inquiry class

Initially coming to fame in 2399, with the actions of the USS Zheng He over the planet Coppelius, the Inquiry Class was Starfleet’s most powerful ship for many years. The initial designs and technical breakthroughs of the ship were later used as the starting point for the Avenger-class project. Engineers at Utopia Planetia felt the time was right for another update to the Avenger line, and decided to return to the classic form, and name, of the Inquiry class. The modern Inquiry Battlecruiser, like other ships of its lineage, are aggressive ships, designed to charge into head-on confrontations and come out unscathed. To further these goals, it comes equipped with a Variable Assault Deflector Array to ensure that it can come out swinging and shrug off any retaliation. This is further tied into its Cruiser Commands, to ensure that its team is as prepared as possible to follow it in its charge. Its sturdy construction and forward-facing weapons mountings round out the package, make it an intimidating sight to be staring down at. Those on the business end of an Inquiry often find their goals rapidly aligning with the Federation’s peaceful ideals.

star trek online inquiry class

While this trait is slotted, whenever you activate Emergency Power to Shields, you will gain a boost to Weapon Haste that scales with your Shield Power and a temporary Secondary Shielding that lasts for several seconds.
The Variable Assault Deflector Array, or V.A.D.A., routes a massive blast of Phaser energy directly out the ship’s main deflector dish, causing significant damage to anything in front of it. For several seconds afterwards, the forward shield facing is significantly strengthened, repairing rapidly from any damage that comes towards it. Additionally, innovations based on the Cruiser Commands present on the ship allow activation of this Deflector blast to amplify the effects of your Cruiser Command on yourself and your teammates, granting boosts based on which command is active. The Weapons System Efficiency command grants a boost to Weapons Power, the Shield Frequency Modulation command grants a boost to maximum shield strength and shield regeneration, and the Strategic Maneuvering command grants resistance to movement-impairing effects.
With any two consoles equipped, your ship has increased Weapon Damage and Flight Turn Rate. With all three consoles equipped, in addition to the previous bonuses, you now gain a Flight Speed and Maximum Hull Capacity.

Eph289's Builds

Build Overview and Focus

Last Updated December 2023

When I started playing STO, the Arbiter was my first T6 ship. Normally R&D promotional ships are far outside of my budget, but since Cryptic gave one away in 2021, the Inquiry is essentially an upgrade to the Arbiter. For a more affordable setup , please see my build for that ship . At the time I first started building, Fire at Will was the predominant firing mode for energy builds, but even after that was nerfed, I decided to keep FAW on the build. I used this ship for flying story missions on Elite, and having the ability to defeat numerous smaller enemies like Tholian webs, Iconian probes, and Hur'q along with having a tankier build was attractive to me for my main captain who plays all of the missions. The choice of beams and torpedoes was chosen for immersion purposes to keep the ship more in line with canon representations of the TNG-VOY-DS9 era.

FAW DPS builds are pretty rare, but this ship has been able to handle story missions fairly well (where you can expect more incoming fire) as well as a variety of Elite TFOs. The goal of this build has truly been realized in making the "toughest, fastest ship" in Starfleet that also packs quite a wallop.

Platform selection

With Commander Engineering and one of the better specialization seats for energy damage (Intelligence), as well as five fore weapons and a must-have starship trait for energy builds, the Arbiter is a great candidate for a ship to make a tough off-tank that still puts out plenty of damage while being maneuverable. The Inquiry takes that a s a starting point, and cranks it up to 11 by adding full-spec Miracle Worker to the package. The Arbiter was already a solid platform, but the Inquiry takes the same basic ship and design concepts and gives it a higher ceiling through the extra console, power, and specialization abilities, so it was a natural choice for me to select that as an Event Campaign reward for my first/main character and unlock more of its potential. From the Inquiry , the Legendary Avenger/Inquiry is a side-grade, trading the potential for 1 more engineering console (Isomag) against significantly better maneuverability. Since I wasn't running maximum Isomags on my build, this ended up being a straight upgrade and a natural transition, plus it came with an excellent ship trait.

Flavor/Theme Choices

Increased survivability for soloing missions on Elite, including Hull Image Refractors console

Mostly orange phaser beams

1 [Over] beam and 1 Pulse Phaser

Varied bridge crew vs all Superior Romulan Operatives/Pirates

Not full Isomags

Human captain

This is a premium build , with the highest available budgets and resources utilized in its creation. See the build costs page for more detail.

Yi Sun-sin was a legendary Korean admiral known for his innovative approaches to naval combat and victories against staggering odds in the 16th century. His decisive strategies defended his nation and earned him renown despite the distrust of the feckless ruling government. Nevertheless, his legacy endures as one of Earth’s greatest maritime leaders. The U.S.S. Yi Sun-sin has emerged victorious from multiple battles against staggering odds, including a Klingon Civil War a host of renegade Excalbian simulacrums , and a Terran incursion. I have dubbed this ship the Yi Sun-sin-B, since there was a canon Ross- class in Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, the original Inquiry would have been the -A and now the Legendary is the -B.

Meta Analysis

ISA: 344 K

Build Focus

This build combines energy DPS with survivability. There are some small contributions from projectiles and other supportive concepts as well, but those are tertiary.

star trek online inquiry class

Skill Unlocks

All weapon-centric builds benefit from the tactical ultimate, as weapon haste and bonus weapon damage from the Focused Frenzy active are appreciable when used on big targets. Applying the bonus to your team is also appreciated. I do not find the cooldown boost from Frenzied Reactions to be needed on a build with a good cooldown scheme.

Engineering skills

Since I use this skill tree for both tanks and offtanks, taking two points in Hull Restoration/Hull Capacity helps survivability. Increased Hull Capacity boosts Tyler's Duality as well

I always take a single point in Hull Plating, but other resistance skills and Damage Control are not worth it. Likewise, 2 points in Impulse Expertise is an appreciable boost to maneuverability. Warp Core Potential and especially Warp Core Efficiency help boost power to subsystems. Efficiency is particularly good at adding power to subsystems I am not allocating much power to.

Improved EPS Power Transfer is essential for recovering power while firing energy weapons.

Science skills

Single points in Shield Restoration/Shield Capacity are low opportunity cost for relatively high survivability gains. Since I need skill points elsewhere, only 1 here for those.

A single point in Shield Regeneration has surprisingly large impact on shield regeneration based on recent research by Jay

Since this character uses Quantum Phase torpedoes on 2 builds, which scale with Drain Expertise, I take both points in DrainX. A single point in Control Expertise powers the Fragment of AI Trait on builds that use it on this toon.

All energy builds should take maximum points in Long Range Targeting Sensors.

The rest of the science skills are of little value on this build and are completely skippable.

Tactical skills

Energy Weapon Training, Hull Penetration, Shield Penetration, Weapon Specialization, and Weapon Amplification are all worthwhile skills to take 3 points in as they boost energy weapon damage directly. Since I do have a torpedo and it does decent damage, 2 points in Projectile Weapon Training is a good choice.

I like taking 2 points apiece in accuracy and defense. Defense is a small contribution to avoiding incoming damage but also helps reduce enemy crits when you're not moving and accuracy is just good all around, if not a stat that you'll need tons of.

Coordination Protocols, Defense Coordination and Offensive Coordination are good team boosts so I always take those. They also benefit hangar pets on builds that have those. Improved Tactical Readiness is essential for reducing tactical cooldowns along with the rest of the cooldown scheme.

There are two crucial unlocks: battery expertise (improves duration of consumable batteries) and threat control which either increases or decreases threat based on threatening stance. I lean a little heavier on Engineering in lieu of stacking more points into the Tac Ultimate.

This ship is a classic beams + 1 torpedo set up. It has absolutely zero investment into exotic damage, so I am not skilled at all into those.

Intel/Strategist is the best-in-slot choice for non-tank Energy builds. Intel provides substantial damage through flanking and Intel Fleet. Strategist likewise adds damage through Logistical Support, Man eu ver Warfare, and Show of Force, as well as some damage reduction through Layered Defenses.

Starship Weapons

star trek online inquiry class

Torpedoes: One, I wanted a torpedo for immersion purposes. Two, the right torpedo, when used with Entwined Tactical Matrices and Super C harged Weapons, is NOT a DPS loss compared to beam arrays. I was already going to slot the Quantum Phase Converter console, so adding the torpedo for its two-piece is an excellent DPS boost. It outparses most of my beams except the Terran/Disc o . I could have slotted the Dark Matter torpedo, but I already had the Quantum Phase gilded and it doesn't quite do the same damage. Note that if you don't like the Disco DBB, but you are okay with the Dark Matter torpedo, I would use the DM torpedo in order to keep the 2-piece bonus.

Mixing in 2 DBBs: Despite "don't mix weapons" being conventional wisdom for good reason, I've chosen to mix in the Wide-Angle DBB . For one, I wanted the two-piece bonus without the torpedo. For two, specifically on a FAW build with a torpedo and 2 Omnis, most of my weapons are hitting my forward arc anyway, with just one beam in the aft that can't fire forward. With 100% FAW uptime and at least 1 target in my side or rear arc, I'm firing that beam pretty much all the time anyway. Suffice to say, with this specific build (FAW) and decent piloting, I'm not really losing uptime on either my torp, my aft non-Omni beam, or my WADBB. The Pulse Phaser

Firing Order

The Quantum Phase torpedo is launched first to stack Super Charged Weapons and damage shields

The Discovery Wide Angle Dual Heavy Beam Bank has a spooled up passive so it's slotted early

The Prolonged Beam also benefits from firing early

The Terran Beam does more damage to targets with lower health

The Pulse Phaser Dual Beam is just there so it's last. The proc is unreliable.

Starship Equipment

Drive Train: I 've finally moved away from the Iconian 3-piece since in our current ISE/HSE runs, I can get it from teammates flying support. This combination yields slightly better selfish DPS if the 3-piece isn't being provided from a teammate, and is significantly better if it is. If I wanted more survivability, I would swap the engines for the Disco Engines to pick up the regeneration from the two-piece .  In terms of healing, the Yi Sun-sin is pretty tanky for a DPS ship and it's pretty rare to die in any Advanced TFO that doesn't involve killing yourself (i.e. Feedback Pulse, Voth damage reflection) which the Disco 2-piece regen won't help with. The ship is designed to be self-sufficient. It's not a full tank (though I've built one on the same character using most of the same pieces), but that only really matters for Elite runs.

Starship Consoles

Set bonuses.

Isomags versus Locators: The new Advanced Isomagnetic Plasma Distribution Manifold Engineering consoles have been shown by analysis to be about 7.5% better than Vulnerability Locators for this build. They're either expensive on the Exchange (especially in Phaser flavor) or you'll need to farm approximately 21 of the appropriate Elite TFOs depending on how good your luck is, then re-engineer to Phaser (not trivial given their large mod pool) and upgrade them. If that's too much effort, slot Locators and play musical chairs with the consoles. Slotting the full 7 Isomags probably would have been better than some of the other consoles I have, but they were themed choices.

No Trilithium Set: The Gamma Omni is slotted over the Trilithium Omni set. According to both the Energy Weapon Calculator and several ISA parses, the Gamma set ends up being superior once you adjust the haste for uptime. There are a few reasons for this. 1) The Trilithium-Omni cannot be re-engineered and with FAW, the forced [Acc] and [Ac/Dmg] mods essentially costs me 2 mods since FAW does not benefit from accuracy overflow. It also doesn't have the 2% bonus damage from T6 reputations that the Inhibiting beam does. 2) The 10% weapon haste is great but it would require t he console, and especially on a FAW build, does not proc often enough, whereas the -10 DRR from the Gamma beam is easily proc'd against big targets as long as you're not sitting completely still. Seriously, the haste proc has 2% uptime on a FAW build.

Alternate energy types: Obviously all weapons would need to be replaced. R eplace the Quantum Phase torpedo with Dark Matter Torpedo. If Disruptor, consider the Nausicaan Energy Torpedo. Quantum Phase Converter (unless Polaron) is the two console to replace. Keep D.O.M.I.N.O. and replace the Advanced Engineering consoles with the appropriate flavor.

VADA/Deadly Maneuvers 2-piece: This doesn't get slotted a lot for good reason. That said, I was already using the Ablative Hazard Shielding for flavor and survivability, so when I did the numbers, adding the VADA for its innate 15% Phaser damage and then another 15% Weapon damage from the 2-piece and the active's damage was better than the Altamid-Modified Swarm Processor, which is what I had there previously. That console has too much value tied into Accuracy which is wasted on Fire at Will since it doesn't benefit from Accuracy Overflow.

Meta-Focused Tweaks:

If going full DPS with unlimited budget, you’re not using beams. That said, for higher damage at higher cost:

VADA -> Another Isomag

Hull Image Refractors and Quantum Phase Converter -> Dynamic Power Redistribution Module+Point Defense Bombardment Warhead or two of Weaponized Helical Torsion/Bioneural Infusion Circuits/Approaching Agony.

Ablative Hazard Shielding can be subbed out for another Isomag at the cost of survivability

Replace the Pulse Phaser and [Over] Phaser with Sensor-Linked Phasers or Advanced Phasers. If really going for a rich build, replace the Crafted Omni with a Sensor-Linked Omni

Budget Tweaks:

If low budget, the Arbiter build is probably what you want, but anyway...

Drop 2 Isomags (T6X and T6X2 upgrades)

Replace D.O.M.I.N.O. with Prior's World Elite Defense Satellite if available and if not, for things like Zero Point Energy Conduit, or a Bellum EPS Flow Regulator/RCS Accelerator.

Drop Kobayashi Maru Transponder if unavailable (T6X upgrade and event); if available, drop the Hull Patches instead

Bridge Officers

star trek online inquiry class

Could replace Reverse Shield Polarity with Mixed Armaments Synergy III if going full glass. This is my off-tank, though, so I don’t. Would also need to replace a doff.

Personal Traits

star trek online inquiry class

If going full DPS, with unlimited budget

Give Your All -> Duelist’s Fervor

Repair Crews -> Adaptive Offense or Point-Blank Shot

Inspirational Leader -> Could go to something like Boimler Effect or Into the Breach.

If low budget, (try and keep the ones at the bottom)

Drop Inspirational Leader (Elite Captain unlock)

Terran Targeting Systems -> Beam Training

Context Is For Kings -> Operative

Symbiotic Ice -> Accurate

Repair Crews -> Techie

Self-Modulating Fire ->  Point-Blank Shot

A Good Day to Die -> Innocuous

Intelligence Agent Attache -> Beam Barrage

Starship T raits

star trek online inquiry class

If going full DPS with unlimited budget

Strike From Shadows->Terran Goodbye

Drop Ship of the Line (T6X2 upgrade) if you're not using the Legendary Inquiry. If you are, drop Universal Designs

Drop Super Charged Weapons  (T6X upgrade)

Strike From Shadows -> Improved Command Frequency

Calm Before the Storm -> Unconventional Tactics

Entwined Tactical Matrices -> Improved Critical Systems or The Best Defense

Improved Critical Systems was better than Promise of Ferocity on this build but not as good as Heart of Sol . Both were super s eded b y Universal Designs when paired with the Immolating Phaser Lance.

Reputation Traits

star trek online inquiry class

Active Reputation

star trek online inquiry class

Duty Officers

star trek online inquiry class

If going full DPS with unlimited budget,

Good luck getting one, but 27 of 47 gives you a chance for CrtH on use of Tac Powers and CrtD on use of Intel powers. Would replace the RSP doff if not using RSP

  If low budget

Downgrade the Fabrication Engineer to Rare

Replace the Energy Weapons Officers with a Warp Core Engineer for a little extra power on EPtX and the Exocomp that gives bonuses on Battery use

Replace 22 of 47 with a Conn Officer for a little CrtH and to reduce Tactical Team cooldown

Miscellaneous

This ship manages cooldowns via Photonic Storm (Photonic Officer I, Calm Before the Storm and a little extra in readiness skills, plus a Krenim).

On an Inquiry, I don't really want to dedicate two of my engineering slots to A2B,nor do I wish to give up the universal seat for science to pick up Photonic Officer II . Nor do I want to double abilities or give up the bulk of my duty officer slots in a Drake/Dragon setup. This allows me to maintain high Aux power (for heals, the Aux Config Offense trait , and general defense) while freeing up duty officers to enhance damage. It's also easy to fly--the only things I need to do are constantly cycle my Tactical and Engineering chains, which I should be doing anyway. I could use Attrition Warfare for engineering abilities, but that's less forgiving unless Threatening Stance is on all the time. Despite having more survivability, this build is not a tank; plus Strategist has a number of damage abilities that would be lost if Threatening Stance was used constantly.

The chosen option syncs my tactical chain up with FAW, and since I am using Entwined Tactical Matrices to keep Fire at Will up all the time, I am not as concerned with dropping Kemocite/Attack Pattern Beta/Torpedo Spread to minimum cooldowns, as syncing them with FAW III is sufficient. Note that I do not even need Calm Before the Storm to get the desired cooldown reduction, but when it is active, it will help lower those tactical powers. Even in the worst case scenario where PO starts its 10 second downtime and no Calm Before the Storm right as my tactical chain is fired, I still have plenty of cooldown reduction to support a 20 second tactical chain. Boimler Effect is not needed either; with the exception of Narrow Sensor Bands all the powers are where they need to be. The graph above does not show the effects of Calm Before the Storm.

Link to CDR sheet for this build

star trek online inquiry class

With as many abilities and synergizing concepts as this ship employs, an efficient control scheme is essential. There are many ways to set up such a ship, so I don't pretend to assume that my way is superior. It works for me, especially with my background in RTS and MOBA games, where pushing many different keys quickly is essential . That said, I reduce the complexity somewhat to make it easier to fly.

Main spambar : (Spacebar , trays 1 and 3) Fire At Will, Advanced Energy Amplifiers, Attack Pattern Alpha, Vulnerability Assessment Sweep, Aux to S tructural, Go Down Fighting, Emergency Power to Engines, Attack Pattern Beta, Photonic Officer, Emergency Power to Weapons, DOMINO, Kobayashi Maru, Override Subsystem Safeties, Tactical Initiative, Narrow Sensor Bands, Kemocite, Directed Energy Modulation, and Immolating Phaser Lance. I could micro-manage these more, but tbh, I've had better results from simplifying the piloting.

Torpedo combo: (1 key) Torpedo Spread I; Fire Torpedo a nd the Phaser Lance . Manual keybind to activate torpedoes. I generally leave the torpedo auto-firing, but sometimes STO is slow to fire the torpedo even when it's off cooldown and the spread is armed. I fire this every 10 seconds after FAW 3 is triggered to get my FAW from Entwined Tactical Matrices.

Heals: (4 key) Brace for Impact, Hull Patch, H azard Emitters I, Auxiliary to Structural I, and Reverse Shield Polarity . I don't map ALL of my heals here, preferring to activate Ablative Hazard Shielding, Bio-Molecular Shield Generator, Sensor Interference Platform, and Diversionary Tactics manually.

I start with basic combos for the first 3 cubes. In an ISE run, I will use all of my longer cooldown buffs in the first fight as well as VADA, Tachyon Net Drones, and DOMINO, but not on ISA. Trigger Evasive Maneuvers to fly over to the left transformer and fire off all major abilities while at 1/4 impulse or stopped within 2 km of the transformer. FAW should take care of most targets. Once 2-3 of the generators are down, target the transformer with Focused Frenzy and Fire On My Mark. Be careful in timing EPtE here, as you'll need it to reset your Evasive Maneuvers . Ideally you activate EPtE here to reset the cooldown on Evasive and it's still active to fly to the right . I rotate to face inward toward the gate.

When the transformer is less than 5%, fly towards the ball of spheres and give them a torpedo spread and cycle or two of firing. Once they start thinning out, Evasive Maneuvers again with Deuterium (reset due to Emergency Power to Engines) and head to the right side. Rinse and repeat, then Evasive Maneuvers again to fly between the Tactical Cube and Gateway. Some clever angling will keep the torpedo/DBBs firing as well as the aft beams. Make sure to flank the Tactical Cube. Frenzy and Fire On My Mark should be available here again. If it's ISA, this is where you use DOMIN O and VADA. On ISE, a slower run might have VADA at gateway, but Tactical Cube is more likely . Lastly, don't forget to summon your Delta Alliance Beacon/Nimbus Pirates. In an average ISE run, I can get two off: one at the start and one at the end.

The importance of Crit and Flanking cannot be oversold. I saw significant increases in DPS from boosting Crit in doffs and traits. On my record runs, my weapons were parsing between 80-9 0 % with roughly 4 0% flank percentage. There are players with better gear and piloting skills than I who've achieved much, much higher percentages, but I will say broadly that when in doubt, add crit. Since flanking includes extra crit chance/severity with Intel, you can't go wrong with flanking either! Look for the downward pointing arrow on your target.

Parse Breakdown

Numbers from record ISE

Wide-Angle Heavy Dual Beam Bank: 151.7 K

Terran Task Force Beam Array:  139.5K

C rafted Phaser (aft) +Omni (aft):   136.1K

Pulse Phaser DBB: 116.1K

Prolonged Beam: 107.5 K

Inhibiting Array: 96.9 K

Quantum Phase Torpedo: 81.5K

Immolating Phaser Lance: 77.2K

Symbiotic Ice: 33.1 K

Delta Beacon: 19.1K

Digital Compilation Field: 18.2K - this is donated damage from support

Anti-Time Entanglement Singularity: 17.4K

Kemocite: 8.8K

Distributed Targeting: 8.1 K (from another player)

Concentrate Firepower: 7.4 K (from another player)

Tachyon Net Drones: 7K - Have seen it higher, I think I used it at the wrong location

VADA: 4.5 K

Barclay Maneuver: 2.7K

Counter-Offensive: 0.4K

Refracting Tetryon Cascade: 0K - misfired this

Weapon crits were around 70-80 %. This has gone down due to swapping Locators for Isomags ; flank rate was around 40 % averaged across weapons. Th e team composition for this run was this ship, a support tank, and three supports.

Portability

Only a handful of ships support both Intel and Miracle Worker seating and they are all expensive with one notable exception: the Terran Lexington . If I had to fly the Lexington, I'd switch from Photonic Officer to A2B with 1 instance and Boimler because otherwise you'd need to fill those extra seats with Controls to trigger Unconventional Systems, which gets expensive fast. That said, Jay covers that amply here . T he other ship that could seamless port this build is the original Inquiry Battlecruiser , which is what I was flying prior to acquiring the Legendary version. The original Inquiry gains an additional Engineering console slot (replacing a tactical) compared to much higher turn rate on the Legendary. Since I'm not running full Isomags, I preferred the Legendary one. The Jovian Intel Raider would have to drop Reverse Shield Polarity altogether or else pick up excessive Engineering seating and has a substantially different weapons layout. The Legendary D7 Intel Battlecruiser , on the other hand, would have no issues porting this build over.  Lastly, the Vaadwaur Juggernaut would struggle without Prevailing Engines due to its sluggishness, and would also need to drop Reverse Shield Polarity or Auxiliary to Structural.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Series Casts Holly Hunter in Main Role (EXCLUSIVE)

The "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" series at Paramount+ has cast Holly Hunter in a lead role, Variety has learned.

Hunter's character will serve as the captain and chancellor of the Academy, presiding over both the faculty and a new class of Starfleet cadets as they learn to navigate the galaxy in the 32nd century.

"It feels like we've spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius," said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. "To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on ‘Starfleet Academy' is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of ‘Star Trek.'"

"Starfleet Academy" will begin shooting in Toronto later this summer, featuring the largest contiguous set ever constructed for a "Star Trek" series, a central academic atrium that will span two stories and include an amphitheater, classrooms, a mess hall, and a idyllic walkway lined with trees.

With its focus on higher education - from the throes of budding romance to the pressures of academic achievement to the angst of painful self-discovery - "Starfleet Academy" is part of a wider strategy to expand what a "Star Trek" show can look like.

"These are kids who've never had a red alert before," Landau told Variety in a March 27 cover story about the future of "Star Trek." "They never had to operate a transporter or be in a phaser fight."

Hunter is part of an elite society of actors to boldly go into "Star Trek" after winning an Academy Award, including Whoopi Goldberg, Louise Fletcher and F. Murray Abraham. Hunter earned an Oscar for best actress for her performance in 1993's "The Piano," along with nominations for 1987's "Broadcast News," 1993's "The Firm" and 2003's "Thirteen." Her career has spanned five decades, from her breakout role in the Coen brothers film "Raising Arizona" in 1987 to her iconic role as the voice of Elastigirl in 2004's "Incredibles" and 2018's "Incredibles 2."

Hunter previously starred in and executive produced the TNT crime series "Saving Grace," which aired for three seasons. She won Emmy awards for the made-for-television movies "The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom" and "Roe vs. Wade." Most recently, she starred opposite Ted Danson in the NBC comedy "Mr. Mayor."

Hunter is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360, and Ziffren Brittenham.

Kurtzman and Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive produce "Starfleet Academy." Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Onsunsamni, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber also executive produce. The series premiere episode was written by Violo. CBS Studios produces in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

"Starfleet Academy" is the latest addition to the "Star Trek" TV universe at Paramount. Next year, "Section 31" will explore Starfleet's cloak-and-dagger black ops division in the first "Star Trek" streaming movie, starring recent Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (reprising her role from "Discovery"). Elsewhere, "Lower Decks," the first "Star Trek" animated comedy, will conclude its run after five seasons in the fall, while "Discovery" - the flagship show of the revamped "Star Trek" TV projects - will end its run after five seasons on May 30. The popular series "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has been renewed for a fourth season ahead of the third season premiere.

The Star Trek: Starfleet Academy TV series has its first announced cast member, and it’s an Academy Award winner.

Captain Hunter

Paramount+ just announced Holly Hunter will star in the upcoming YA-focused Starfleet Academy series, playing the “captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy.” Hunter’s Hollywood career spans decades, starting in the 1980s, including a breakout role in Raising Arizona and her first Oscar nomination for Broadcast News . She went on to pick up three more Academy Award nominations, and won in 1994 for her leading role in the film The Piano . She is also known for voicing Helen Parr (Elastigirl) in the two Incredibles Pixar movies. Hunter’s television resume is also extensive, including multiple Emmy nominations and two wins. She starred in the TNT series Saving Grace which ran for 3 seasons from 2007-2010 and most recently was part of the cast of the NBC sitcom Mr. Mayor which ran for two seasons between 2021 and 2022.

“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said Starfleet Academy co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau in a statement. “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek.”

The new series is set at the famed Starfleet Academy in San Francisco in the 32nd century, the same timeframe established in Star Trek: Discovery . It is set to go into production in late summer at Pinewood Studios in Toronto .

Cadet’s face new love and a new enemy

Today’s announcement also included this synopsis for Starfleet Academy :

The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy  introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive produce the series alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Onsunsamni, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber. The series premiere episode is written by Gaia Violo. As we’ve previously reported,  Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome is one of the show’s writers.

Hunter is the first officially confirmed member of the Starfleet Academy cast. While Discovery’s Mary Wiseman has sidestepped questions regarding the show , fans expect she will also be part of the cast. Her Sylvia Tilly was established to be a teacher at Starfleet Academy in season 4 and continues to be one in the current fifth and final season, although she is “on loan” to the ship at the moment.

An interesting casting choice.

I’m not sure what to think of this, she’s a good actress but I don’t think I see her as a “captain” leading a bunch of cadets. Who knows…

Well we have to remember that Captain is both a position and a rank. We have several characters who are shown to have the rank of Captain yet serving as a Captain of a ship (or them ever have been given a starship command). And of course we have had several characters who aren’t Captain in rank, yet serve as Captains of a ship. All very much in the style of the Navy.

More importantly, I’ve never heard of “chancellor” as the title for the head of a military academy; I had thought it was “Commandant.”

Civilian universities sometimes have a “chancellor”; at the University of California, there is a system-wide chancellor, although individual campuses have a president (except Berkeley, where the chancellor is the president). The incoming chancellor was a professor of mine a long time ago!

Considering this is fiction, and set a thousand years in the future there’s no reason to assume it will be run by modern military convention. Especially as it’s not a military. Besides, a chancellor is a common title for the head of a school.

im not sure why these kinds of comments are even being made. It’s like criticizing it for having a woman in a leading role in a position of power because the show was started In the 60s and that wasn’t common back then.

Picard is also called the Chancellor of the academy in PIC S2. So it tracks with canon.

“Captain” is most usually seen as a rank as opposed to a specific role. I’ve never known a Cpt. in real life that had a ship, but instead a desk in an office building.

Captain is indeed a rank (the equivalent of colonel in the other services), and plenty of them have desk jobs. For example, the current commander of the U.S. Navy’s Cyber Defense Operations Command is a captain, and although a Surface Warfare Officer, has never commanded a ship, per her official bio.

On the other hand, the commander of a ship can be called “captain” even if he does not hold that rank.

She definitely could command a room full of cadets. It’s a great choice!

Worse actors have effectively played Captains…

i feel like she’s gonna be a space mom alla Mrs. Incredible

A smart casting choice to prop up an iffy concept of a series. She is an excellent actress that will bring some legitimacy to the project.

She’s an actress who has shown range. So I don’t fear a Bujold, issue during the start of filming. And one who has done broadcast tv even, so she has experience in filming even at a much faster pace, then what Trek on streaming shoots at. And certainly having a strong performer can attract talent (with most of the primary cast I assume to be younger, I don’t see this as that big of factor). But I do expect it to have an impact on the performances of the cast, as not waiting to empress themselves. Usually when acting with a really good actor, it helps elevate your own performance. Of course for all I know she might have a rather small role on the show, even if appearing in most episodes. Who knows.

Elastigirl to the rescue! First bit of good news I’ve read about this show.

For me it’s the second after Tawny Newsome writing for the show.

That’s fair. I just hope she doesn’t make everyone talk really fast for no reason. :)

I feel exactly the same. This is good news for me. I just wish it was set in the 25th century.

My dislike of the 25 century is that so far it’s not developed much, probably something appealing to producers and writers. And that its visual elements aren’t easy to tie down.

For example I can look at a ship in the 23rd, 24th centuries and see details that tell me things (thrusters, transporter emitters, bridge, hangers, weapons, sensors. With the ships in the 32nd century I see them and have no clue. So I really want to see this world in more detail if we are going to be set in it.

OMG. Really.

Ooo, love this! Now I’m excited!

Angela Bassett would’ve killed in this role.

No denying that. But it all comes down to budget, availability, interest on the actor’s part and chemistry with the rest of the cast. That said, would I love to see a cameo from Angela? Heck, yeah!

She would have killed it as (a different) Burnham too.

OMG YES! And it would’ve lasted 7 SEASONS!

She’s busy killing it on 911, which has much better writing than anything I’ve seen from recent Trek.

Great news! But why do shows like this have 8 Executive Producers? What role do they serve?

Many reasons. For instance, sometimes it’s a negotiated title, other times it has to with advancing through the system.

Executive Producers get streaming residuals.

They have them because they realized they can maybe just get by without the 15 Executive Producers they had for Discovery and Picard. ;)

Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth are both from Roddenberry Entertainment and have been Executive Producers on all the new shows. It’s unclear how involved they actually are. It seems to me like they have some kind of advisory capacity but probably it’s more Rod Roddenberry lending his “cred” is the son of the original creator of Star Trek.

I think that Frank Siracusa and John Weber are local producers in Canada, so they are probably the liaison between Secret Hideout in Los Angeles and the studio in Toronto. They are involved in a lot of American shows that are shot in Canada.

Aaron Baiers is vice president of Alex Kurtzman’s production company Secret Hideout. Jenny Lumet seems to be an Executive as CBS Studios.

I think Olatunde Onsunsamni has been the producing director on Discovery, i.e. he’s overseen the directors that are hired for individual episodes (plus he’s directed a bunch of episodes himself). He may hold a similar position on the new show.

Thank you. I really appreciate that thorough answer.

Rod just gets a check. That’s about it. .

Solid actress. I hope they write her character well.

Excellent get. Hunter rules. The YA angle is very much not my cup of raktajino, but I recognize not everything’s for me, and I’m going to give the show a chance regardless.

Make it your tea.

Maybe I’m ignorant as to what is around/popular these days but I feel like the show is 10-15 years too late to capitalize on the vibe it’s going for.

I love this casting. We’ve seen her comedic and serious acting skills many times. I think she can hit the ground running with this one.

This is exciting news!

I would be interested in this series if it took place in the early 25th century as opposed to 32nd. Could have been a nice companion piece to Legacy.

Here’s my pitch. Episode 1, the whole class of Starfleet Academy is on a ship (or small starbase) that is thrown back in time due to a “time mine” remaining from the Temporal War and find themselves stranded in the early 25th century and having to reintegrate with the “primitive” but more engaged/active/interesting Federation of that time.

Well, it’s set in the 32nd century, and Legacy isn’t even a gleam in Terry Matalas’ eye anymore.

And just like the last 3 seasons of Disco it’s not interesting to me.

God no. They that no talent show runner would turn Nepo baby Jack into an admiral.

“Short for Edwina,TURN TO THE RIGHT!”

Holly Hunter is a fantastic actor, so this is great news. I just hope they get an entirely new team of writers, rather than using those who have written Discovery.

Same here. Here’s hoping…

Oof! That’s a good point. They’ve got Tawny Newsome in the writers room, and she seems smart and to know a thing or two about Star Trek, which also gives me hope.

New writers would be great. And Holly Hunter is amazing. It still doesn’t change anything, the 32nd century “burn” era of Star Trek sucks and this is just doubling down on it.

This is pretty great news! It’s nice to have another big name attached to Star Trek.

Also with today’s movie news (yeah I’ll believe it when I see it of course), we could have two Academy based themes happening and both roughly around the same time while set a thousand years apart from each other. That’s pretty wild.

I’m a doubter of the series but this is a spectacular choice.

Tilly is a false flag: She’s probably not in it and it’s probably not set in the new Disco time either. I’ll bet a dollar its in the Legacy timeframe, maybe even that Lost Era……….

They confirmed it last month it takes place in the 32nd century. And they been clearly dropping hints about it on Discovery this season.

They are not trying to trick anyone, it will take place in the 32nd century.

Except every actor who could be involved if that were the case, especially Wiseman, is being oddly coy- “I hope,” etc.

Of course, that could be NDAs at work, or maybe just contracts not being finalized. We’ll see.

How’s it going to feel to be spectacularly wrong in a couple of months…..

well, it is only a dollar……

Every single thing you’re guessing is wrong. :)

“Legacy timeframe”? Legacy doesn’t exist in anything other than some fans’ heads.

Great casting… love Hunter. On the other hand, I was elated about Hurd & Cabrera in Picard, and the first two seasons were still abysmal.

Fantastic casting! Another Oscar winner in a Trek series really shows that they can pull in some A list actors. Hunter shows a lot of range in whatever role she plays. This has me very excited. Looking forward to seeing who else will round out the cast. Hopefully we will get more news in the coming weeks!

Not bad casting. It’ll probably still be the Melrose Space stinker we expect tho.

Quite the get! Go Star Trek. I still struggle to understand how they are going to make this show compelling to fans. But if they were able to sell the concept to an Oscar winning actress I think it’s a good sign. Out of curiosity is anyone excited about this show? (Those who aren’t need not reply)

I’m cautiously optimistic for it (and I really enjoy the 32nd Century).

“I still struggle to understand how they are going to make this show compelling to fans”

I bet someone said something similar when they announced TNG. Remember the protesters ? 🤣

Indeed I do. But my comment really was about the show not being star ship based.

It’s entirely possible it could include a starship at some point. There have been references to training vessels. Enterprise herself was assigned to the Academy in TWOK.

maybe the iss enterprise might end up being youed by the academy

They said the same about DS9. Even after they got the Defiant, it was still a space station based show.

Personally I never felt that Star Trek has to be confined to just being a “spaceship show”.

Ha. I once met a guy who refused to admit that anything past TMP even *existed*.

I’m always excited when a new Trek is coming out.

How about a juicy role for Annie “Mee-Maw” Potts? 8)

I always had a crush on her when I was a kid.

While I’m not very enthusiastic about the show itself this is very exciting news. Always loved Holly Hunter and could get me more interested in it.

Great casting choice!

Well. . .wow. I had virtually no interest in an academy series, particularly one set in the 32nd century — but Paramount, you’ve got my attention, so mission accomplished, I guess. Hunter is awesome.

Of course, the unasked question is: will she have a southern accent?

Every planet has a south.

And lots of planets have a North.

That too. 🤣 Doctor Who forever!

‘TV show I don’t care about.’

“Elastigirl.”

‘…TV show I maybe care about now.’

Solid casting choice. Holly is terrific in most everything) loved her in ‘Saving Grace’) and her work on ‘Succession’ recently also excellent. Sounds promising.

Interesting choice. I don’t expect SFA to be written to appeal to fans of TOS, TNG, DS9, etc. We are aging, and Par+ needs to bring new fans into the franchise. They are going to create what they want. The suits and creatives who might read these forums must scratch their collective noggins… We can’t agree on what Trek is (or isn’t.) I encourage everyone to give the show a chance and watch it. When we all watch the shows in the franchise? I think it’s good for all of us. When Par+ sees good numbers, they will be inclined to produce more Star Trek.

I’m totally going to watch and so are you.

I agree. As a greybeard legacy fan who watched first-run TOS way back and who loved watching SNW and Picard S3, it is imperative that Star Trek attract new younger fans if the franchise is to last another 60+ years. Discovery really tried to target a new audience in the past 3 seasons (unlike S1 and S2) and I expect SFA is trying to attract a new and younger demographic. That said, I hope SFA will still be a great Star Trek show that older fans will want to watch and great to hear casting new with HH. Oh btw, Discovery S5 may not have been “must see” TV for this legacy fan, but I will definitely be watching the two-part series finale starting this week!

What? Score! Talented actress. Looking forward to this much more.

Why do people think it’s going to be set in the 25th century?

Because they keep assuming this will morph into Legacy

That is weird. From the very beginning Paramount made it clear that it is in the Discovery future timeline.

Well, they were being coy about when it was set for a while, but it was always pretty obvious that it was going to be in the 32nd century.

One helluva a great actress. Perhaps one of the biggest gets ever for Secret Hideout Trek.

i think michelle yoeh is a pretty big gets for secret hideout trek shows

Ingerestinggggg. Kind of fun getting a casting announcement and the Oscar cred, while meaningless to me personally, is a really cool distinction for Star Trek to be able to hold. It’s pleasing to see Star Trek’s industry cred level up.

Wow. Hunter is brilliant. Excited to watch this now.

I hope it doesn’t drown in Trek minutia and just tells compelling stories.

Ha ha Wrong TNT show but for a second I thought it was Kyra Sedgwick from the Closer. I suppose too old now but oh would she have been an amazing Captain. Maybe put her as an Admiral Lol

I love her voishe. Welcome to the family, Holly Hunter!

Lets hope none of the cadets are related to any past Trek character, but I am sure the writers, producers cant help themselves to connect them to some previous character. Saying this, Hunter is an excellent choice and I am impressed with this casting.

One thing I don’t understand is if Paramount is in such dire straits economically, how they could afford so much big names for their shows? I mean they literally hired guys like Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman, Holly Hunter, Zoe Saldana etc… You would expect them to be a little more economical (cheap) with their hirings.

Right, and Dennis Quaid, Donald Sutherland, Helen Mirren (!) and Kevin Costner for nearly 5 years (!). It does kind of boggle the mind. (Clearly I’m a big fan of the westerns P+ has offered).

Sometimes studios blow money just to make themselves seem more viable than they are. Back in the 70s a studio spent something like 2.5 mil to acquire rights a Gay Talese nonfic book, THY NIEIGHBOR’S WIFE, but apparently never even developed it for film — it was a way they had of announcing in the trades, ‘hey, we’re still here.’

Also this kind of go-big think goes back to the 1959 BEN-HUR, which, if the pricey film had failed, would have tanked that studio for good.

It’s not a simple equation, but to put it as simply as possible. The Sheridan shows can afford the talent because their production costs don’t require special effects, which are insanely expensive on Trek. All shows have a budget, it’s how they choose to allocate it. I think the Sheridan shows are much cheaper to produce, and they’re creating a better return or perception of return. No matter what the status of Paramount Plus is, they still have to bring new content or shut it down. Even with the talent, I think the Yellowstone-spawned universe is much cheaper, and much more popular than the Trek shows at this point.

Star Trek: 90210. No thanks, Holly Hunter is amazing but that is not enough to convince me to continue in the furthering adventures of Kurtzman literally destroying the galaxy because *reasons* HARD PASS!!!

It is no guarantee of anything, that’s for sure. Recruiting acting talent hasn’t been a problem for any of Secret Hideout’s shows. It has helped elevate the stories in most cases. Sadly, Trek is an IP, and will be mined more for its superficial qualities than its intrinsic ones. This is the way.

Way to go with Holly! They’re definitely getting more Academy for their buck!

i had zero interest in this new series. until now. hunter – what a great choice. so cool.

hopefully this means she’s the main character and not Tilly

I don’t think either of them will be… the younger cast will be the focus.

Nobody ever said Tilly was the main character. No one in a position to know anyway.

Probably the most impressed I’ve been with any trek regular casting news since Mulgrew. Let’s hope this time turns out better writing-wise.

Am wondering if this was inspired by Linda Hunt’s casting in SPACE RANGERS (that’s assuming anybody associated with ACADEMY has ever even seen the short-lived series from Imagine Entertainment. I actually have it on DVD, mainly because they did one episode, BANSHEES, that I still really like after at least a dozen viewings.)

I watched all the episodes of that show on youtube and I enjoyed them. It had the legendary Cary-Horuyuki Tagawa (Shang Tsung) and the lead of the Viper tv show. I think the concept was solid and it could have continued for a long time. Although I don’t think anyone would necessarily get casting inspiration from a very short-lived series from the 90s. I am just hoping this is not a stunt casting where they kill off the big-name star at the beginning of the series.

I know what you mean, long time back when I was 7 or 8 years old I was really into a tv show called THE NEW PEOPLE (precursor to LOST in some ways, group of young people in plane crash stranded on island that was used for something nuclear, I think), and I was totally impressed with the one old guy (Richard Kiley), but they killed him off after the first show.

I was actually thinking about the Stargate Atlantis pilot episode where they had a big name actor like Robert Patrick and killed him off at the end of the pilot. Everyone thought Patrick was gonna be a series regular.

HH was great in BVS. But I’m not exactly excited about this news. A great actress is joining a show that nobody asked for… ok…

More Holly. Less Tilly. PLEASE!

I seriously don’t know her, but I did always find her voice as an excellent choice for Mrs. Incredible.

The latter part of the synopsis sounds like high-school/university teen relationship drama in Star Trek-based setting… which most likely is not my mug of raktajino. Apart from the setting, what from “Star Trek” will remain?

Star Trek can be many things as episodes covering different genres in prime universe series (TOS, TAS?, TNG, DS9, VOY or ENT) proved. While being many things, can it still remain true to (what I perceive as) the original concept of Star Trek – a thought/mind provoking/inspiring/challenging science fiction allegory? Remember, some TOS episodes were written by established/experienced science fiction writers.
