Srixon Z-Star Divide: What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/1/FirstCut_SrixonZstar&Divide_balls.jpg

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Srixon Z-Star Divide golf ball brings the two-tone visuals introduced last year in its Q-Star Tour Divide to its tour-level multilayer urethane cover balls.

PRICE: $45 per dozen.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/1/Z-STAR DIVIDE_Package.png

THE DEEP DIVE: To some it may look like a toy or perhaps a castaway from a Myrtle Beach Treasure Island miniature golf course. Even some historians might recall it as reminiscent of the Ping Eye1 and Eye2 golf balls of the 1970s, '80s and '90s. But that would be completely missing the point behind the new Srixon Z-Star Divide golf balls.

Building on the success of last year’s introduction of the two-tone, split-hemisphere colored Q-Star Tour Divide, Srixon is bringing that same visual look to its highest tech and highest performing models. The Z-Star and Z-Star XV are aimed at the best players, including last week’s Sony Open winner and defending Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama . Both feature the thinnest urethane covers in the company’s line (0.6 and 0.5 millimeters, respectively) and both utilize a special cover coating (called “SpinSkin”) that improves the chemical bonds of the cover material, making it more flexible so it provides more grab in the grooves on short shots for extra spin. Beneath the cover, both balls bake in extra firmness at the outer edges (XV uses a dual-core construction) for more resilience and greater initial ball speed.

Of course, while all that’s inside the Z-Star Divide and Z-Star XV Divide is the same as the original white (and yellow) versions introduced last year, it’s mixing the white and yellow covers on the same ball in the two-tone model that’s getting all the attention. Not merely a cosmetic trick, though, the split hemispheres of yellow and white provide a perfect visual dividing line for aiming putts. The split color pattern is attractive for other reasons, too, said Brian Schielke, Srixon North America general manager.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/1/Z-STAR XV 7 DIVIDE_Package_FLIP.png

“They’re so easy to see flying through the air, and give great visual feedback on pitches and chips around the green,” he said.

The Z-Star Divide is designed for swing speeds over 90 mph and has the higher greenside spin of the two models. The Z-Star XV Divide features a mid-high launch and is designed for swing speeds over 100 miles per hour.

The Z-Star Divide and Z-Star XV Divide will be in stores Jan. 21.

Srixon Z-Star Divide Golf Ball 2023

Srixon Z-Star Divide golf ball 2023 ball offer all the performance benefits of the Z-Star with a twist. The two colour design creates multiple options for aligning the ball towards the target or parallel to the club face. As alignment patterns go, this simple design is one of the best.

Easy to see in flight and find

The Srixon Z-Star Divide golf ball 2023 may help those of you who sit across the divide of whether golf balls should be white or yellow. Underneath it all, it is a standard Z-Star so you can read more in my Srixon Z-Star golf ball review .

VIDEO: Martin Hopley demonstrates the unique benefits of the Z-Star Divide design

The Z-Star Divide comes with a 3-piece construction that features a 92 compression FastLayer DG core that gets progressively firmer as you move from the centre to the outer layers. This is what gives the Divide its performance with the softer centre controlling spin and the firmer exterior delivering the speed.

Srixon Z-Star Divide Golf Ball 2023

Aimed at players swinging 90mph or more with the driver, the Z-Star Divides 10% lower compression than the Z-Star XV means that it performs better with the irons as the cover can get more into the grooves so the club and grip the ball.

Key to this is the revised Spin Skin+ coating on the 0.5mm urethane cover that you see on the best premium golf balls . This aims to deliver more control and make the ball more aerodynamic so that it stays straighter in the wind and the Divide does perform well in this respect.

However unlike all the other Srixon golf balls in the Z-Star range, the Divide is all about the look. The white and yellow halves of the ball have the colour impregnated into the core and then the two halves are joined together. The cover has a slight matte look to it, but the feel is almost the same as the standard Z-Star.

Srixon Z-Star Divide Golf Ball 2023

There are many ways to use the Divide and putting is the obvious one. You can align the Divide colour line to the target or parallel to the face depending on which one you prefer. If you don’t like to see the line then switch the ball to the all yellow or all white side. It is a bit more subtle than drawing a line on it and the fact half of the ball is one colour means that you can see how the ball is rolling from a distance to get feedback on your strike.

Srixon Z-Star Divide Golf Ball 2023

I was also using it on tee shots to try and promote an inside attach by pointing the line to the right and then swinging my driver on that path. On other tee shots I would line the divide parallel to the face as irons have a shallower, cleaner top line than things like putters that can have long alignment lines.

Srixon Z-Star Divide Golf Ball 2023

Srixon claim there can be a strobe effect on full shots as the colours rotate, but my eyesight must be missing that. It does however seem easier to see in the sky as it appears darker than a white ball and also the two-tone appearance was easy to find in the rough too. But with a ball that can point you in the right direction, you will be in the fairway anyway, right…?

Product description.

The all-new Q-STAR TOUR DIVIDE packs all the same tour-level performance features as a classic Q-STAR TOUR, but in three highly visible colorways. For this generation, Q-STAR TOUR DIVIDE features a slightly higher compression rating for powerful ball speeds, coupled with a softer 50/50 matte urethane cover for even more visible spin, easy alignment, and a satisfying, soft feel. FastLayer Core FastLayer leverages a gradual transition from soft inner core to firm outer edge to enhance ball speed, distance, and feel. But for this generation, we gently upped the compression to promote longer, straighter flight on low-lofted clubs and great feel on Iron and Wedge shots. 50/50 Matte Urethane Cover Each DIVIDE cover is yellow on one half and red, blue, or orange on the other. This high contrast, matte finish makes spin visible and putting alignment easy. Plus, we used a slightly softer urethane for this generation for even more tour-level spin and stopping power. 338 Speed Dimple Pattern Our 338 Speed Dimple Pattern helps Q-STAR TOUR DIVIDE punch through the air upon launch and continue to generate lift once airborne. This pattern also promotes a low drag coefficient to help the ball stay on-target in tough conditions. Swing Speed: 75+ MPH Launch: Mid-High Greenside Spin: High

Is golf catching on in Russia? Jack Nicklaus’s designers have certainly been busy there

Josh Sens

Golf is played in more than 200 countries and territories around the world, but until fairly recently, Russia wasn’t one of them.

Its introduction to the game came just 30 years ago with the opening of the country’s first course, Moscow City Golf Club, a nine-hole layout on the fringes of the capital.

At the time, Russia was still part of the Soviet Union. But while the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, gave his blessing to the project, the real driving force was the Swedish golf star, Sven “Tumba” Johansson, who announced his plans to build the course while floating on a boat down the Moscow River, whacking golf balls into the water under the bemused watch of party apparatchiks.

As if that weren’t entertainment enough, there was the club’s groundbreaking ceremony, in late 1987, where the motley assortment of celebrities in attendance (Mike Tyson, Sean Connery and Pele, among them) solidified golf’s status in the country as a little more than a curiosity.

That was then, this is now.

In the world’s ninth most populous country there are more than a dozen 18-hole courses, a handful of nine-hole layouts and myriad projects in the works.

The most recent to be completed is Raevo Golf and Country Club, outside Moscow, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design that opened earlier this month.

Nicklaus Signature courses are relative rarities that come at a cost and carry prestige, but Raevo is not the first in the Moscow area. It’s the third, giving the city and its surrounds a greater concentration of Nicklaus Signature courses than any major capital in the world.

srixon z star tour divide

This depth charge of Russian golf course development has been propelled in large part by economic shifts that have generated great reservoirs of private wealth. But the boom has also happened in the face of an inconvenient fact: Russia is not an easy place to grow the game.

Aside from having next to nothing in the way of golf tradition, the country enjoys little in the way of a golf season. Winters are long. Summers are short. Turf can have a tough time taking root. If you’re itching to play on a Moscow getaway, you should aim between mid-May and mid-October.

Throw in rocky, clay-based soil — far from the friendliest for course construction — and you understand why Russian sporting culture features more slap-shots on ice than chip shots around the green.

Yet golf progresses.

Over the past decade-plus, Dirk Bouts, a design associate with Nicklaus Design, has made about 80 trips to Russia, spending long stretches on the ground consulting on course renovations and overseeing new construction. During Bouts’s early visits, the majority of golfers he crossed paths with were expats. In more recent years, that demographic breakdown has turned on its head.

“The first time I went, golf’s presence was pretty much non-existent,” Bouts says. “But you see it taking root. It’s becoming more democratic. You have people making a decent visit. Now, it seems like every time I go back, there are more Russians out on the course.”

Just as picking up the game involves a learning curve, so does building courses in a fledgling golf market. The first Nicklaus Signature course in Russia was Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club, which opened in 2008 outside Moscow after a drawn-out five years of construction — a process prolonged by inexperienced Russian contractors working challenging terrain with outmoded equipment.

srixon z star tour divide

By 2014, though, when it came time to cut the ribbon on Skolkovo, the second Nicklaus Signature design outside the capital, the work crews were more seasoned, the equipment upgraded and the entire process streamlined. The job took four years. It’s since gotten more efficient. The start-to-finish work on Raevo was a comparatively scant three years.

The resulting course is a sylvan beauty that spills through a woodsy landscape, west of the capital, with natural creeks and lakes as ornamentation, and gentle hills and valleys that lend plenty of movement. Stretched to the tips, the course plays 7,245 yards, plenty of heft to handle tournaments. The turf is creeping bentgrass, and the sand-capping and extensive drainage beneath it is designed to stretch the golf season to its fullest.

“Instead of mid-May to mid-October,” Bouts says, “we’re hoping for something more like mid-April to end of October.”

This month marked a soft opening for Raevo, as the clubhouse is not yet completed. When the grand opening takes place, celebrities will no doubt be in attendance, Nicklaus among them.

Don’t expect Mike Tyson.

Golf in Russia has gotten serious.
