From Mountain Passes to the Costa del Sol

Immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture as you visit renowned art museums, explore ancient castles, learn to surf on Spain’s northern coast, hike through the Picos de Europa and take in the impressive rock formations, and pair up with a local teenager for a language exchange and day stay. End your student travel program in Spain on the gorgeous beaches of the Costa del Sol after outdoor adventures in the Alpujarras region.

This itinerary represents our best projection of the group’s schedule. However, we may implement changes designed to improve the quality of the program.

Meet your fellow high school student travelers and one or more of your leaders in New York, and fly together to Madrid, Spain. To learn more about how we organize travel, click here.

Begin the program with five days in a small Asturian fishing village on Spain’s gorgeous northern coast. Immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture, and get to know your fellow travelers as you participate in daily language lessons. Visit local fiestas and markets, and play soccer on the beach with new Spanish friends. Enjoy a surfing lesson in the blue waters of the Cantabrian Sea. Visit Covadonga, a major Asturian pilgrimage site. It was here that the Virgin Mary appeared to Don Pelayo in a cave and inspired his troops to defeat Moorish soldiers at the Battle of Covadonga in 722. Learn about Christian troops’ first victory during the Muslim occupation of Spain and the 700-year Reconquista that followed.

Travel south to a mountain inn located at the base of the snowcapped Picos de Europa. Ride a teleférico , or gondola , into the mountains. Hike on spectacular trails past cows, sheep, horses, and goats. Meet local farmers who spend the summer months in the mountains with their herds, and taste Asturian cheeses. Go canyoning in a mountain river, rappelling down waterfalls and jumping into natural pools.

Explore Madrid’s lively streets, sample local delicacies at a tapas market, and take in an outdoor film or a flamenco show. Visit world-renowned museums including the Prado and Reina Sofía, and learn about the life and works of Spain’s most celebrated painters, such as Velázquez, Goya, Picasso, and Dalí. Interview local madrileños in the city’s famous Retiro Park, and enjoy a picnic or a rowboat ride. Walk through the dressing rooms, tunnel, and coaching area of Real Madrid’s stadium, Santiago Bernabéu. View tapestries, thrones, and armor at the Royal Palace and learn about the history of the Spanish monarchy. Take a day trip to Segovia to see its Roman aqueduct or to Toledo to visit the Alcázar and ancient synagogue.

Experience Spanish life as it is really lived alongside your Spanish host sibling. Participate in activities together with Spanish teenagers during the day and get to know them over shared meals. At night, reconvene with your Putney group and stay together at a local hotel. Daily activities may include kayaking, a rousing game of soccer, a concert or film, a visit to a local museum, and an afternoon at the town pool. Spend two full days in the home of your host family and practice Spanish as you join in their daily activities, meet the family, and form lasting friendships.

Head south to the Andalusian city of Granada. In 1492, Granada was the last Moorish city to surrender to Los Reyes Católicos, thereby ending the Christian reconquest of Spain. Observe many Moorish influences here, from Arabic teahouses to Islamic architecture. Visit the Alhambra Palace and view its stunning gardens, mosaics, and fountains. Soak in a traditional Arabic bath while sipping mint tea, take a flamenco lesson in a traditional cueva , and learn about olive oil production at a nearby olive grove. During language lessons, learn about Spanish words that come from Arabic and study the work of the famous Andalusian poet, Federico García Lorca.

Travel to a whitewashed village in the mountainous Alpujarras region for several days of outdoor adventure. Hike to the summit of Mulhacén, the highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula, and enjoy the crisp mountain air and stunning natural beauty. Take a day trip to Trevélez, where the region’s dry mountain air is used to cure serrano ham in jamón factories, or Lanjarón, famous for its natural springs and bottled water company.

Continue south to a small town on the Costa del Sol, Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Kayak to a deserted beach and spend the morning snorkeling. Invite local children to join you in a game of frisbee or volleyball, and enjoy a sunny picnic. Take a day trip to the charming town of Frigiliana, and walk past whitewashed homes decorated with painted ceramic pots and bright red geraniums. Descend into Nerja’s three mile cave network Las Cuevas de Nerja , and observe enormous stalactites and stalagmites. On your final evening, recount your adventures with new friends, and enjoy a special celebratory meal as a group.

Fly from Málaga to New York with your group and a leader, then continue on to your final destination. Note: The groups returning on July 30 and August 6 fly from Bilbao to New York. To learn more about how we organize travel, click here.

Meet some of our featured leaders. Please note that these may not be your leaders for the program.

Spain’s diverse natural beauty, rich history, and worldly culture make it an amazing place to travel. Experience the country’s many contrasts, from the green rocky cliffs that overlook the Cantabrian Sea to the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean, from the bustling El Rastro market in Madrid to the quiet whitewashed streets of Andalucía. Compare Roman aqueducts and Moorish palaces, Renaissance paintings and Cubist masterpieces, and bullfighting rings and Real Madrid’s stadium.

Castellano , or Castilian Spanish, is the official language of Spain, although other languages are spoken in different regions, including Catalan in Cataluña, Galician in Galicia, and Euskara in the Basque Country.

Daytime temperatures during Spain’s summer months range from 80–95ºF/27–35ºC, although it is cooler on the northern coast and in the mountains, where temperatures hover around 70ºF/21ºC in the afternoon, and can be even cooler at night.

Each region of Spain is famous for its own regional specialty, a product of each region’s climate, history, and customs. While northern Spanish cuisine is a hearty reflection of the farming industry and proximity to the Atlantic coast, with specialties like queso manchego and tortilla de patata , southern Spanish cuisine showcases Mediterranean influences with dishes like paella .

What to Expect

Review specific program expectations here. For more general information:

The goals of this language program abroad are to improve your Spanish proficiency and build your confidence in your conversational skills. Learn new vocabulary and expressions through cultural activities, outdoor adventures, and interactions with locals. Each day, leaders hold dynamic conversational language lessons designed to help you let go of your inhibitions and communicate more easily. Language lessons are fun, interactive, and incorporate hands-on elements such as scavenger hunts, vocabulary games, and informal interviews with local people.

Two years of language study are required for this program. Students on this travel program are required to speak Spanish during the program and must sign a pledge to do so, not only with the many local people you meet, but also with the leaders and within the group. To learn more about our Language programs click here.

Pursue an independent project and explore an aspect of local culture of particular interest to you—build a phrasebook of colloquial expressions, create a cookbook of family recipes that you learn from your day stay family, or learn the lyrics of the summer’s most popular Spanish songs.

This is a physically active summer program. You can expect to hike, swim, and surf. You will also do a lot of walking in Spanish towns and cities. You do not need to be at peak fitness to participate, but it is important that you have a desire to be physically active, and that you are excited about trying all activities.

Accommodations in Spain are varied, ranging from mountain chalets to cosmopolitan hotels. Many of our residences are run by welcoming Spanish families that Putney has known for years. Rooms are a mix of doubles, triples, and quads. Leaders reside together with the students throughout the program.

We begin each day with a traditional Spanish breakfast at our residence. For lunches and dinners, we find small restaurants or go to local markets to purchase food for a picnic. Lunches tend to be the biggest meal of the day in Spain, followed by a siesta. Restaurants range from traditional regional cuisine to a more international selection in Madrid.

  • Learn the basics first. Use some of the  best ways to learn Spanish from home to get a good base in the language before you go abroad. Familiarize yourself with the pronunciation, basic grammar and introductory vocabulary. You’ll have an infinitely easier time in your chosen immersion program if you’ve conquered the initial linguistic hurdles.
  • Optimize your free time. Use your free time to attend concerts, plays and anything else that may contribute to your understanding of local culture and language. The more you get yourself out there, the more likely you are to interact with people and improve your Spanish conversational skills.
  • Consume Spanish media.  While it may be tempting to relax by watching an English series during your downtime, take advantage of all the authentic Spanish media around you. Read the local newspaper and make a list of new vocabulary. Watch the local news on TV or listen to the radio . Enjoy a telenovela or a Spanish sitcom and improve your listening skills.
  • Don’t get overwhelmed. The first time you’re truly surrounded by Spanish, you might feel overwhelmed. The key is to stay relaxed and not   beat yourself up when you make mistakes. Keep practicing at every possible opportunity, and you’ll soon see noticeable improvements.
  • Don’t speak English with your classmates. It can be fun to hang out with your classmates and a relief to speak English with them outside the classroom. But doing this all of the time will rob you of opportunities to improve your Spanish. Try to only speak in Spanish with them, and, even better, use your free time to socialize with the locals.

When you visit a Spanish-speaking country for your immersion program, you will have no choice but to use your Spanish skills constantly. Instead of working through grammar exercises and vocabulary-building activities, you will have to just speak the language.

Spanish will surround you 24/7. Simple things like getting something from the grocery store or finding your way home will require you to use your Spanish skills.

The value of learning from native speakers cannot be understated. You will not only improve your conversation skills, but you will learn how words and phrases are actually used. That information can be hard to glean from a textbook.

FluentU takes authentic videos—like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talks—and turns them into personalized language learning lessons.

You can try FluentU for free for 2 weeks. Check out the website or download the iOS app or Android app.

Spanish skill improvement is just one of the many benefits of using an immersion program. In addition to all the language-learning benefits, you will also be learning about the culture and the people through hands-on interaction.

It will help you to better understand an entire country in a meaningful way by making connections with its people.

Yes, immersion is the best way to learn Spanish because you’re learning and practicing constantly and using the language naturally. And if you’re experiencing immersion in a Spanish country, you’ll be hearing native speakers and their pronunciation every day!

It’s hard to say exactly how long it will take to learn Spanish because everyone learns differently and at different paces.  But if you’re living in a Spanish-speaking country and taking immersive Spanish classes, you can expect to speak basic Spanish in around three months.

You may feel frustrated if you can’t communicate as well as you’d like to at the beginning of your immersion experience. But if you stick with it and take advantage of all the opportunities to practice, you’ll quickly gain confidence speaking Spanish.

So many excellent programs! Which one you choose really boils down to your goals. Decide what you want to get out of a program and then start looking for that experience.

You should really give this a try if you have the opportunity. It will change your Spanish—and maybe even your life—for the better!

If you've made it this far that means you probably enjoy learning Spanish with engaging material and will then love FluentU .

Other sites use scripted content. FluentU uses a natural approach that helps you ease into the Spanish language and culture over time. You’ll learn Spanish as it’s actually spoken by real people.

FluentU has a wide variety of videos, as you can see here:

learn-spanish-with-videos

FluentU brings native videos within reach with interactive transcripts. You can tap on any word to look it up instantly. Every definition has examples that have been written to help you understand how the word is used. If you see an interesting word you don’t know, you can add it to a vocab list.

learn-spanish-with-interactive-subtitled-videos

Review a complete interactive transcript under the Dialogue tab, and find words and phrases listed under Vocab .

learn-spanish-with-songs

Learn all the vocabulary in any video with FluentU’s robust learning engine. Swipe left or right to see more examples of the word you’re on.

learn-spanish-with-music-videos

The best part is that FluentU keeps track of the vocabulary that you’re learning, and gives you extra practice with difficult words. It'll even remind you when it’s time to review what you’ve learned. Every learner has a truly personalized experience, even if they’re learning with the same video.

spanish travel program

“Give yourself the gift of learning Spanish in a beautiful, interesting city!”

“Absolutely the best way to learn Spanish. Puebla is a gorgeous city and Fluenz makes sure you get to experience so much. Whether you’re interested in the food, culture, or history, Puebla has it all! Fluenz will bring the experience to life with private tours and exclusive experiences while building your Spanish skills”

“Fluenz language and cultural immersion in Chiapas”

“Spanish lessons from some of the most understanding and effective teachers I've ever had the pleasure to learn from. The reason I keep coming back to Fluenz is that they not only take care of every logistical detail of a wonderful trip, they also actively manage my Spanish journey . . . Is it a typical vacation? Or a typical language school? No, it's the best possible combination of both, and I love it. Chiapas in particular has had the most impact on me so far . . . Fluenz hasn't only significantly improved my Spanish, they've also given me experiences that I otherwise never would have had. For that I am grateful, and highly recommend them.”

“Amazing Spanish immersion program in Merida”

“Amazing Spanish immersion program. Fluenz has an incredible group of young, smart Spanish instructors and the colonial town of Merida is a great place to study as it was at one time one of the wealthiest cities in Latin America making it architecturally and culturally different from others. Fluenz's super cool, boutique hotel is right by Paseo de Montejo, a spectacular tree-line boulevard with Spanish colonial mansions, many of which have been converted into great restaurants. The added bonus of studying in Merida is you are a short drive away from some of the best Mayan sites in all of Mexico and Central America. With Fluenz we spent a half day at Uxmal, and Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is also less than two hours away.”

Written December 22, 2023

“Great way to learn Spanish!!!”

“My experience with the Fluenz Puebla immersion was excellent and exceeded my expectations. Based on how much I improved over just a week, I think Fluenz has really perfected the formula for in-depth, in-person learning . . . I experienced a big leap in both my Spanish abilities and my confidence in speaking at the Fluenz immersion in Puebla. While I am very interested in visiting their other immersion locations in the future, if they offer the Puebla experience again I would be very tempted.”

Written December 4, 2023

“Just do it!”

“The Fluenz teachers are the BEST. They are all impressive, accomplished individuals, plus great teachers, fun, patient and kind. The class combined with the food and culture make it a fantastic trip. I take other classes from time to time with other programs and I compare them by saying all the other classes are like going to a community college and Fluenz classes are like going to an Ivy League University. Learning is so hard, so pick the best and have fun doing it.”

Written October 24, 2023

“An unbelievable week of Language and Culture!”

“Joining the Fluenz program, especially the Medellin Immersion, was the best decision I could have made for my Spanish! From the moment you step off the plane, you are greeted with the most hospitable team. From those very first moments, the coaches and program directors made me feel comfortable with my current level of Spanish which set me up with the right mentality heading into the week. The classes were tailored to meet me at my current level, and I saw amazing progress in such a short period of time. I felt this week not only gave me a boost to my current level, but it also helped me understand how to better learn Spanish. The immersion week gave me confidence I needed to continue my Spanish journey!”

Written October 16, 2023

“Fabulous learning experience”

“Fluenz's approach to helping you learn Spanish is unsurpassed, no matter how little or how much Spanish you already know. And Oaxaca is a magical place that overflows with vibrant art and delicious food.”

Written May 9, 2023

“Great Experience!”

“This program is EXCELLENT. I cannot say enough good things about how amazing this program is. The Spanish tutoring is excellent, all instructors are fantastic and have a very easy to follow standardized way of teaching. My Spanish definitely improved leaps and bounds. Additionally the excursions and activities planned really help you soak up all the culture that this amazing city has to offer. This is absolutely worth it. I am definitely a Fluenz customer for life and signed up for their Zoom instruction immediately after returning from this trip, and am planning my next Fluenz Spanish immersion experience for October of this year!”

Written April 25, 2023

“Best Spanish Immersion Ever”

“Oaxaca is just as amazing as all of the professors with Fluenz. The accommodations are fabulous, the Oaxacan food is amazing, and best of all Fluenz provided me with the most comprehensive and wonderful Spanish classes. I plan to return to Oaxaca again for another immersion sometime. The restaurant experiences are so fantastic, it is unbelievable. All of my professors are the most interesting and fun personalities to work with and learn from. I can't say enough about them and Fluenz.”

Written April 18, 2023

“Fluenz exceeded my expectations!”

“Fluenz was fabulous at every turn. I never expected my immersion week to turn into one of my most favorite experiences.”

spanish travel program

For 15 years we've taught Spanish to via our digital interactive program, our Zoom Immersion, and our in-person immersions around Latin America and Spain. Over time we've worked to perfect every minute of every learning session. This is why despite how difficult it is to learn Spanish, we are confident there is a realistic and achievable path to fluency. For those who are serious about their Spanish, there is nothing like the entire Fluenz journey including our digital App, the face-to-face Online Immersion, and the week-long experiences throughout Latin America and Spain. What People Are Saying

Student and guide

The partners in Costa Rica are fabulous! Everything was well-organized, and kids were always engaged. Our guide, Jimmy, truly is an educator and ambassador of his country. All of the students and leaders really enjoyed his personality, love of his country and knowledge. The Family Stay Experience was also very wonderful!

Students at the Brandenburg Gate

Know that your child will grow in so many ways from this experience. The program has just the right amount of structure and freedom for the kids to explore in a safe and enjoyable manner. The family stay, while intimidating at first glance, is a unique and amazing opportunity for the kids to really experience the culture that they are being immersed in.

Group at landmark

It was just an absolutely amazing, life-changing, experience.

Girl Surfing

My advice to future participants traveling on this program is to fully step outside of your comfort zone in order to get the most out of this opportunity. You will never regret speaking more of your target language, trying new dishes native to your country, making new friends, or partaking in amazing activities that you normally wouldn't!

How to Protect Yourself and Others

CDC’s Respiratory Virus Guidance  provides strategies you can use to help protect yourself and others from health risks caused by COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses. These actions can help you lower the risk of COVID-19 transmission (spreading or catching COVID-19) and lower the risk of severe illness if you get sick.

Core Prevention Strategies

placeholder-image

CDC recommends that all people use core prevention strategies to protect themselves and others from COVID-19:

  • Although vaccinated people sometimes get infected with the virus that causes COVID-19, staying up to date on COVID-19 vaccines significantly lowers the risk of getting very sick, being hospitalized, or dying from COVID-19.
  • Practice good hygiene  (practices that improve cleanliness)
  • Take steps for cleaner air

When you are sick:

  • Learn when you can go back to your normal activities .
  • Seek health care promptly for testing and/or treatment if you have risk factors for severe illness . Treatment may help lower your risk of severe illness, but it needs to be started within a few days of when your symptoms begin.

Additional Prevention Strategies

In addition, there are other prevention strategies that you can choose to further protect yourself and others.

  • Wearing a mask and putting distance between yourself and others  can help lower the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
  • Testing for COVID-19 can help you decide what to do next, like getting treatment to reduce your risk of severe illness and taking steps  to lower your chances of spreading COVID-19 to others.

Key Times for Prevention

Using these prevention strategies can be especially helpful when:

  • Respiratory viruses, such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV, are causing a lot of illness in your community
  • You or those around you have risk factors  for severe illness
  • You or those around you were recently exposed to a respiratory virus, are sick, or are recovering

Check Your Community

Find out if respiratory viruses are causing a lot of illness in your community. Data updated weekly.

Learn more about all three of these respiratory viruses, who is most at risk, and how they are affecting your state right now. You can use some of the same strategies to protect yourself from all three viruses.

'I was just completely devastated:' University of Lynchburg alumni react to program cuts

by Hayden Robertson

University of Lynchburg (Credit: Alexia Stanbridge, WSET)

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Hours after the University of Lynchburg announced they were cutting 17 programs and dozens of positions, many alumni spoke to ABC13 about the shock and devastation they are feeling.

University President Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar announced Thursday afternoon that they would make cuts to the following programs:

The university listed on its Facebook page the programs that are being cut.

  • Business Studies (Access)
  • Community and Nonprofit Leadership (Access)
  • Diversity Strategies (Access)
  • Music Education
  • Religious Studies
  • Spanish Education
  • Special Education

Grad programs:

  • MBA Cybersecurity
  • MEd Higher Ed Leadership
  • MEd PK-12 Ed Leadership
  • MEd Science Education
  • MEd Reading

Alumni told ABC13 that the news came as a shock.

"I was there for five years, and I was just completely devasted," Lauren Mosley, who just graduated from the University of Lynchburg in May, said. "No one saw this coming."

"There is a lot of grief, a lot of anger, a lot of confusion, but you know, some fond reminiscing at the same time," Logan Wagner, who graduated from the university in 2019, said.

RELATED: University of Lynchburg cuts 17 programs, eliminates 40 staff member positions

Many of them noticed major cuts were happening in programs that are in the arts. Wagner has a theatre degree from the university; which is one of the degrees being cut. He said he's not surprised by it and always felt the arts have been underappreciated.

"I don't think it's surprising to see universities underfund and undervalue the performing arts," Wagner said. "But it's particularly frustrating when that is also the field in which they rely on the most when it comes to events when they try and bring in new students."

Alumni Danielle Lambert graduated from the university, back when it was known as Lynchburg College, back in 2007 with a degree in music education. She said it's disappointing seeing arts underfunded at universities too.

"Unfortunately, it didn't surprise me just having my own position as a public school music teacher cut previously," Lambert said. "It just hurt a little bit more knowing it was happening in higher education as well."

The university has always prided itself on being a liberal arts school according to the alumni. Some feel the university has turned its back on the arts.

"I don't know how you can continue to classify it as a liberal arts college," Wagner said.

"With the music department, the theatre department, and the Spanish major being cut, it doesn't seem like it's a very liberal arts college anymore," Lambert said.

University President Dr. Morrison-Shetlar said this decision has also been difficult for the administration, but they are working to do this the right way.

"People are hurting and I'm respectful and very compassionate about that, but we are doing this for the right reasons; which is making sure that this institution is around for the next 121 years," Dr. Morrison-Shetlar said. "We want to make sure that those who are on campus are getting a fabulous experience and of course our employees as well."

All of the alumni ABC13 spoke with said they are just trying to process their emotions; while also being there for each other and their professors.

Dr. Morrison-Shetlar said while some arts programs are being cut, the university is utilizing its different community partners to make those experiences better for all students.
