Riding in Spain

Spain is an amazing country for motorcycle lovers and has some of the best roads in the world. You’ll love the motorcycle routes in Spain, which cover anything from the rugged Pyrenees mountains in the north, deserts of Andalusia in the south, and sun-soaked beaches on the coasts and the Spanish islands.

Before your trip, it is essential that you check all the rules and regulations of riding a motorcycle in Spain .

1. Ruta de la Plata

• Start : Seville
• End : Gijon
• Time needed : 4-5 days to a week
• Approximate distance : 1000 km

The Ruta de la Plata or, “Silver Road”, starts in Southern Spain and is perfect for those wanting a  cultural route with a religious focus.  

Every year, thousands of people come to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago. However, with this route, you can actually ride the very famous pilgrimage route. The route starts in the South in Seville and continues its way north, stopping in cities such as Mérida , which is home to many Roman ruins and Cáceres , an amazingly intact medieval village. Riders can also stop in Salamanca, a university city that is well known for its architecture and a popular day trip from Madrid. The route finishes in the city of Gijon , in the region of Asturias.

From there, if you want to continue the pilgrimage, you can continue on through France. It’s perfect for those wanting a mix of culture, by visiting many famous villages of colonial Spain, as well as beautiful scenery as you ride in and around national parks and mountain ranges.

This part of the route can take 4 days to one week, depending on how much you want to stop.

Along the way, you can stay in some really unique lodgings, such as a former Arabian fortress, a castle from the 15th Century, and various monasteries/convents.

2. Pyrenees

• Start : Barcelona
• End : San Sebastian
• Time needed : 3-7 days
• Approximate distance : 500 km

Some major stops along the route:

• Aigüestortes National Park
• San Sebastian

Heading up north, this route takes riders through breathtaking scenery and winding curves through the Pyrenees mountain range and a small taste of the Basque region of Spain.

The route starts in Barcelona , a vibrant, seaside city known for its food, culture, and architecture. Visitors can easily fly into Barcelona, rent a motorcycle if needed, and spend a few days exploring the city before starting the motorcycle route.

After leaving Barcelona, riders will pass through the Montserrat mountain range before heading up into the Pyrenees. Montserrat , a popular day trip from Barcelona , offers a beautiful cathedral and historic monastery to visit, nestled right in the Pyrenees. Riders can stop for a few hours, and then continue on up through the mountains through some of the best motorcycle roads in Europe.

As you ride, you will pass through charming mountain villages and historic towns, stopping to take in the local cuisine and culture along the way. Some notable stops along the route include the medieval town of Vic , the ski resort town of La Molina , and the stunning Aigüestortes National Park .

The route ends in San Sebastian , a picturesque coastal city known for its beaches, food, and Basque culture, with mountainous terrain surrounding the city and giving spectacular views for motorcycle riders.

The entire route can take anywhere from 3 to 7 days depending on how much time you want to spend exploring each stop, and can be continued onwards through the rest of the Basque region.

3. TransAndalus

• Start : Malaga
• End : Malaga
• Time needed : 7-14 days, really depending on your pace!

• Tabernas Desert
• Sierra de Grazalema

The TransAndalus route is a journey of approximately 2,000 km that takes you through some of the most scenic areas of Andalusia. It’s very popular for cyclists, but motorcyclists will also enjoy the winding roads and scenery. The route typically takes 10-14 days to complete, but can be shortened or lengthened depending on your travel preferences.

Starting in Malaga , you’ll ride through the mountains and olive groves of the interior, passing through the picturesque villages of the Sierra Nevada and stopping at historic landmarks such as the Alhambra in Granada . As you continue through the region, you’ll see the stunning white-washed villages of the Alpujarras and the dramatic landscapes of the Tabernas Desert .

One of the highlights of the TransAndalus route is the ride through the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park , with its stunning limestone formations and verdant forests. Other notable stops include the historic city of Ronda , known for its dramatic bridge and bullfighting heritage, and the coastal town of Tarifa , which is a popular spot for kite-surfing.

Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to sample the Andalusian cuisine and stop in one (or more!) of the seaside villages for a swim in the Mediterranean.

Overall, the TransAndalus route is a fantastic way to experience the beauty and diversity of Andalusia on a motorcycle.

4. Tenerife

• Start : South Tenerife
• End : Los Gigantes
• Time needed : 1 day
• Approximate distance : 185 km

There are many amazing motorcycle routes in Tenerife , but this iconic route in the Spanish island shows you the biggest sights of Tenerife in a day . Start from the south of the island in Playa de las Ámericas and head up to Teide, stopping in Vilaflor for a quick coffee. On the way to Teide National Park , you’ll have views of the ocean and climb up curves through beautiful pine forests. Once you reach the park, you’ll have fun riding through lava fields and are able to pull over in several places to have a photo stop.

As you continue on past the tourism office of Teide, you’ll find a nice restaurant where you can sit outside and treat yourself to lunch or a coffee.

On your way down the mountain, make a stop in La Orotava to explore the historical and colorful town then head on towards Puerto de la Cruz .

You can spend some time exploring Puerto de la Cruz or relaxing on the beaches, then make your way over to Garachico , a popular beach spot. The route back to the southern part of the island takes you up and over more forests, with many winding curves.

If you time it right, you should reach Los Gigantes right before sunset and can enjoy the spectacular views.

5. Costa Brava

• End : Roses (although you can continue on)
• Time needed : 1 – 2 days
• Approximate distance : 250 km

• Calella de Palafrugell

The Costa Brava, located on the northeastern coast of Spain, is a stunningly beautiful region known for its rocky coastline, crystal clear waters, and picturesque coastal towns. Starting in Barcelona , the motorcycle route along the Costa Brava takes you through winding roads with breathtaking sea views, picturesque beaches, and charming villages.

The first stop on the route is the town of Calella de Palafrugell , known for its narrow streets, white houses, and beautiful beaches. From there, the road takes you to the stunning beaches of Llafranc and Tamariu , both popular destinations for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports.

Continuing on the route, you’ll come across the picturesque medieval village of Pals , known for its cobbled streets, Gothic architecture, and impressive watchtowers. Further down the road, you’ll arrive at the charming fishing village of Cadaqués , famous for its white houses, narrow streets, and beautiful beaches.

The final stop on the route is the town of Roses , located on the northern end of the Costa Brava. Here, you can visit the beautiful beaches, explore the medieval fortress, and indulge in some of the region’s famous seafood.

The route can easily be done in a day but it’s always nice to take your time to explore in depth each village and soak up the sun at some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain.

6. Palma de Mallorca Lighthouse tour

• Start : Palma de Mallorca
• End : Palma de Mallorca
• Approximate distance : 252 km

• Palma de Mallorca
• Port de Pollença
• Cap de Formentor
• Necropolis of Son Real

Mallorca is a motorcyclist’s paradise and full of many amazing rides ! This motorcycle route in Mallorca takes you through some of the famous spots and views on the island. You’ll likely start your journey from Palma de Mallorca and head up to the most iconic spot on the island: The Cap de Formentor .

You have to take the highway to cover some of the island, but once you reach Port de Pollença you’ll love the curves and views along the way. Watch out for bicyclists as you ride through forests and hills, and eventually reach the Cap de Formentor, a lighthouse on the very edge of the island.

Take a short break before heading back and down to Alcúdia , a lovely little port town where you can enjoy a nice seafood lunch. Next, visit the Necropolis of Son Real , a prehistoric burial ground, before finishing up your day on the beach of Cala Torta .

7. Basque Route

• Start : Bilbao
• End : San Sebastián
• Time needed : 1-2 days
• Approximate distance : 175 km

• San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
• Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve
• San Sebastián

The Basque region, located in Northern Spain, is one of the most beautiful and most visited regions, and this motorcycle route takes you through the best sites there are to see. The route starts in Bilbao, the largest city and heads west along the coast towards San Sebastian.

The route is approximately 175 kilometers long and can be completed in a day, but it’s recommended to take two days to enjoy the stunning views and stop in the small towns for “ pintxos “, the Basque tapas.

The first stop when leaving Bilbao is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe . This gorgeous site is a must-see along the Biscay coast. Game of Thrones fans may recognize the site from the series, although this time you won’t find any dragons soaring around it! This part of the route takes you through some curves along the coast before continuing on your way.

As you ride along this route, you will pass through many picturesque fishing villages such as Bermeo , Lekeitio , and Getaria , which are known for their delicious seafood and Basque cuisine. The stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Basque coastline are beautiful for viewing, and also perfect for sunbathing in the summer.

Traveling further along the route, you’ll pass through the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve , which is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Head inland to Guernica , a town that was bombed in 1937 and then made famous by Pablo Picasso’s painting of the tragic event. Although the city holds a lot of history of the Basque region, don’t expect to find an old town square or a lot of historical buildings. Most of the city was destroyed from the bombings and has been rebuilt.

Next, head back up the coast and stop along the other fishing villages which all have spectacular views of the Basque coast.

Finally, make your way to San Sebastián . This vibrant coastal city is known for its beautiful beaches, delicious food, and lively atmosphere. Definitely spend a day or two in the city to stroll along the elegant promenade, visit the historic Old Town, or simply relax and enjoy the lively Basque culture.

Overall, the Basque Motorcycle Route is a perfect blend of stunning natural landscapes, charming coastal towns, and discovering Basque culture. It’s a must-ride for any motorcycle enthusiast visiting the region.

8. Rias Baixas Circuit

• Start: Vigo
• Time needed: 1 – 2 days
• Approximate distance: 300 km

The Rias Baixas Circuit is a motorcycle route that takes you through the beautiful region of Galicia. This route starts in Vigo and takes you along the coast of the Rias Baixas, the southernmost part of Galicia and a beautiful route on the Atlantic Ocean. The route covers a distance of only about 300 kilometers and will take you around four hours to complete, although you should definitely pass yourself to visit all the spots!

The route passes through many picturesque coastal towns, including Baiona , Nigrán , and Sanxenxo . Baiona is famous for its well-preserved medieval castle and historic center, while Nigrán has a beautiful beach with crystal clear waters. Sanxenxo is one of the more tourist destinations in the Rias Baixas, known for its stunning beaches, excellent seafood restaurants, and vibrant nightlife.

While doing this circuit, you can also get a closer look at the islands of Galicia National Park , by taking a boat from the town of Cangas . The beaches there will make you feel as if you’re in the Caribbean, with their white sand and turquoise waters.

Heading north, you can also visit the town of Cambados , which is known for its Albariño wine and beautiful historic center. Taste some wine on one of the oceanside cafés, before heading back to Vigo.

9. Sierra Nevada Circuit

• Start : Granada
• End : Granada
• Approximate distance : 300 km

• Puerto de la Ragua
• Alto de Haza Llanas

The Sierra Nevada Circuit is one of the many stunning motorcycle routes in Spain and takes riders through the mountainous region of the Sierra Nevada. It can be easily be completed in a day, but riders may want to stay the night along to really enjoy visiting the villages and admiring the scenery.

Starting in the city of Granada , riders will head towards the stunning Sierra Nevada National Park, a well known mountain range that boasts the highest peaks on the Iberian Peninsula. The route includes a number of challenging mountain passes, including the Puerto de la Ragua and the Alto de Haza Llanas , with amazing views of the surrounding region.

Riders will also ride along the region of Alpujarras, which has plenty of picturesque, white washed villages to stop and explore and grab a bite to eat. The route also includes a visit to the picturesque town of Lanjarón , famous for its natural hot springs and traditional Andalusian architecture.

10. The Castles of Castilla Route

• Start: Madrid
• End : Segovia
• Time needed : 3-4 days
• Approximate distance : 650 km

• Castillo de Coca

The Castles of Castilla Route is a great motorcycle route in Spain that takes you through some of the most famous historical towns and sites. Starting in Madrid, the route covers approximately 650 km and takes about 3-4 days to complete.

Along the way, you’ll visit some of the most impressive castles in Spain, such as the Alcazar of Segovia and the Castillo de Coca . You’ll also ride through medieval towns like Toledo , Ávila , and Salamanca , each with its own unique character and charm.

The route will take you through the countryside of Spain, mountainous terrain and vast open plains. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the different villages and sample delicious regional cuisine, such as the famous roast suckling pig of Segovia.

The Castles of Castilla is a beautiful, but also cultural motorcycle route in Spain.

Planning to tour Spain with a motorcycle? There are some essential things you need to know before your trip, including important paperwork and kit to bring with you. Here’s everything you need to know about motorcycling in Spain.

Motorcycling in Spain- why you should go!

When you think of Spain, many people think of overcrowded beaches in Benidorm, drunken teenagers and possibly Sangria. But, I promise you, there is much more to Spain than the Costa del Sol, especially if you’re travelling and touring by motorcycle .

The landscape changes from the rugged north, with mountains and scenic views to rival anywhere else in Europe, to the desert and arid areas, to the sparkling azure blue of the Mediterranean. There is history and culture everywhere you look, as well as friendly and welcoming people, delicious food and SUNSHINE- even in winter.

Motorcycle Touring in Spain- Where to go

When planning a motorcycle tour of Spain, the first thing you need to do is to figure out where you’re going (and how long you have for your road trip!)

If you’re riding from the UK to Spain (we’ll cover that shortly), you need to allow the time it will take to drive through France to Spain (and back again!) Of course, if you only have a week for your holiday, travelling from the UK and back leaves only a few days to explore the country, and the further south you go, the less exploring time you have.

On the other hand, if you have 10-14 days or longer, you can get a lot further south, certainly as far as Costa Blanca or Andalucia and possibly even get to enjoy  motorcycling in Portugal  if you’re happy to ride every day.

Make sure you bring a motorcycle camera or helmet cam – the scenery is spectacular.

When to go motorcycling in Spain

In our opinion, southern Spain is the perfect European winter destination. It’s warm for one thing, and there’s nothing like a little sunshine to chase away those winter blues. It’s one of the  warmest places in Europe in February – average temperatures in Malaga are 17°c (but only 12°c in Madrid- that extra bit south does make a big difference)

In the past, Spain has been VERY crowded during the winter months, especially in the south. Many Northern Europeans (like us Brits!) head to that area to get some winter sunshine.

However, now that BREXIT has happened and rules have changed (more on that later too!), you might find things a little quieter, certainly with British vans.

Northern Spain is mountainous and you can expect snow during winter- and it will be cold, even on a sunny day (just like in the Alps or any other mountain range.) If you’re planning to stay to the north, you’ll need to bring warm clothing.

Spain Motorcycle Touring in Summer

Of course, Spain is a classic summer destination, and it can be CROWDED, especially at the UNESCO world heritage sites in Spain and on the beaches. For us, we find it too hot during high summer, especially as we travel with a dog and keeping a dog cool on a road trip is never easy  (especially when they’re a cocker spaniel who doesn’t understand the meaning of the word ‘chill’…!)

The best times to plan motorcycle touring in Spain are probably the shoulder seasons of Spring and Autumn. Temperatures are still warm enough to enjoy the beaches and swimming in the sea, but there are much fewer tourists.

Planning a route from UK to Spain

For some reason, riding or driving from the UK to Spain seems to confuse people.

Perhaps it’s because there are several options, or perhaps because there’s a mountain range in the way, but it’s something which gets asked over and over again in Facebook groups and forums. Of course, if you travel with a motorcycle camper van , you might have different considerations than if you’re riding the bike the whole way, but the general principles are the same.

Ferry or driving from UK to Spain?

The first question to ask yourself if whether you want to travel from the UK through France and down to Spain, or whether you want to take a ferry direct from the UK and sail around the coast and down to northern Spain.

Generally, taking a ferry from the UK to Spain is much more expensive than driving through France (depending on time of year and type of cabin).

You can travel from Portsmouth or Plymouth and go to either Santander or Bilbao (both on the north coast of Spain)

A one-way trip takes about 24 hours and booking a cabin is recommended.

The biggest consideration to this ferry (apart from the cost), is the weather. You will be crossing the notorious Bay of Biscay- and it can get ROUGH. Even in the middle of summer. As someone who gets seasick  (hilarious considering I’m ex-Navy and lived on boats for 15 years) , I avoid this crossing and prefer to drive from the UK through France to Spain, but it’s entirely up to you.

Driving through France to Spain

If you decide that you want to drive your motorcycle or camper down to Spain, you first need to decide if you’re going to take the ferry or tunnel from UK to France (there are pros and cons to both).

Then you have two main routes through France to Spain. Each route takes about a day to drive, so take this into account when planning your Spanish road trip itinerary.

Route 1  is via Tours, Bordeaux and down the Atlantic coast on the N10 until you cross the border between Biarritz and San Sebastien. You can join this route easily if you decide to come over on a ferry to Caen, Le Havre, Dieppe or Cherbourg.

This is our favourite route for a France road trip as you pass some incredible places (including some of the  most historic places in France! )

Route 2  is straight south from Calais, skirting around Paris and then down to Clermont Ferrard and Perpignan on the A75 (which is largely free from tolls). The huge highlight from this route is crossing the Millau Viaduct on your motorcycle- it’s well worth the experience.

Of course, you can always drive down one route and back up another!

Can I drive to Spain in the Winter?

Yep. I know there are those HUGE mountains called the Pyrenees, but the routes are all open, unless you happen to be really unlucky and hit it in the middle of a snowstorm (do check the weather forecast before travelling.)

If this happens, then we recommend stopping for the night somewhere safe (the beauty of travelling in a van) and then continuing on when the snow has stopped and the roads have been cleared. Don’t forget you will need snow chains and make sure you have fitted all-weather tyres.

Hiring a motorcycle to tour Spain

If you don’t have your own bike, or don’t want to take it, you can easily fly into Spain and hire one. Just make sure to ask how to get from the airport to the rental agency- not all of them are at the airport itself and you might need to book a taxi.

To rent a motorcycle in Spain most places will expect you to be:

• 21 years or over, depending on the company’s rental policy; (18 years old for scooters and some very small bikes)
• Have a minimum of 3 years riding experience (in practice, this seems flexible)
• show identification (identity card for EU citizens or a valid passport for other nationalities) 

Make sure you have proof that you can take the vehicle across a border if that’s what you’re planning to do.

Don’t forget, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure the vehicle has the required safety equipment. The on-the-spot fines apply to you as the rider, not the company. Check in advance with the company what kit they will provide with the vehicle and what you will need to bring. If you are solo motorcycle touring , remember you’ll need to carry everything yourself, including any motorcycle camping kit.

Take a list of what is legally required with you and check it off one by one as you are given the handover. Do not drive until you are happy you comply with the local laws.

You can expect to pay anywhere from 80€-180€/ day- based on model. Make sure you ask the right questions to know what’s included in your rental, such as:

• Kit included
• Luggage included
• Helmet rental available
• Pillion allowed
• Breakdown/ insurance cover
• Times & location of pick up/ drop off
• Documents needed

Motorcycling in Spain- what gear do you need to carry?

Just like most of Europe , there are certain things you MUST carry with you whilst motorbike touring in Spain.

Don’t forget, if you are motorcycling in France to get to Spain, you need all the kit required by those countries, as well as the kit needed in Spain.

Things you need to ride in Spain- safety gear

These are the things you MUST have with you when you’re motorcycle touring in Spain.

• It is NOT mandatory to wear any other protective gear- but I highly advise that you do!
• Hi-vis reflective jackets – you must wear them on the side of the road or hard shoulder or risk being fined. You do NOT have to ride with one on if you don’t wish to.
• You do not need headlight beam converters on a motorcycle in Europe unless your headlight points dramatically to the left.
• Country (UK) sticker attached to the back of bike on reg plates. (NOT the EU or GB sticker anymore!)
• If you wear glasses you MUST carry a spare pair
• Wearing a helmet is mandatory for riders and pillions and you will be fined for breaking this.

NOTE – If buying a helmet, check for an ECE 22 E-Mark label to be road-legal on European roads. Read more.

TOP TIP: Buy these essentials for riding in Spain in advance. If you wait until you’re at the ferry/ tunnel, you could spend THREE times as much!

Are bluetooth headsets or intercoms illegal in Spain?

No. There are several blogs and websites (some of which I would consider a fairly high authority) which are incorrectly reporting that bluetooth headsets are illegal in Spain. Whilst it IS illegal to use headphones or ear buds, or connect the bluetooth system to a phone, having a fitted bluetooth intercom system is not illegal.

Basically, just like when motorcycling in France, anything which goes INTO the ear (and therefore blocking your ability to hear other noises) is prohibited, but anything which sits outside the ear, even in a helmet, is allowed, as it’s akin to a ‘speaker in a car’.

What documents do you need to road trip in Spain?

Unlike when motorcycling in the UK , if you’re riding in Spain, you need to carry the following documents with you at all times- failure to produce them immediately will result in a fine.

• Passport (or identity card)
• Driving licence (check it is in date!)
• Motorcycle Insurance documents- check you are covered for riding in Europe
• Vehicle V5 logbook (which must show your correct address)

We advise to also have the following documents to hand:

• Vehicle tax
• Breakdown cover
• International Driving Permit if required
• Trailer certification (if towing)
• Personal travel insurance

Do I need an international driving permit to drive in Spain?

• You do not need an IDP to drive here for periods up to 6 months.
• You do not need a green card to drive/ ride in the EU.

Motorcycling in Spain- where to stay overnight

In Spain, there are several types of stopovers you can use.

Spanish Camping sites for motorcycles

It’s easy to find motorcycle campsites in Spain and they’re much like campsites anywhere else in Europe. Some are rustic and have very basic facilities, while others are designed for long-term visitors and have entertainment, clubs, pools and bars!

Many campsites have large pitches, excellent (and clean) facilities and stunning views. And most have staff who speak excellent English.

TOP TIP: If you’re touring Spain in summer, make sure to get a pitch with shade. You’re going to need it when the sun gets hot!

TOP TIP : If you’re planning to stay in one area for a long time (30+ days), negotiate a special rate with the campsite directly. Most of them have some sort of discount- some are as little as £10/ day, including electric.

Can you wild camp with a motorcycle in the Spanish National Parks?

No- wild camping is not permitted in any of Spain’s National Parks.

Driving tips for Spain

Ok, let’s deal with the basic rules and some tips for motorcycling and road tripping in Spain:

• Spain drives on the right
• Speeds are in km/h, not mph (you might want to change the setting on your motorcycle sat-nav )
• You need dipped headlights/ daytime running lights on
• Gloves are mandatory
• Children under 12 are not allowed on a motorcycle without permission (don’t ask me how you get that!)
• Road surfaces are generally pretty good and, unlike France, they try to avoid 10,0000000 road works on a bank holiday weekend.
• Yellow diamond signs mean you have priority. Diamonds with a black line through mean you no longer have priority ( this is usually on roundabouts.)
• Trams always have priority everywhere- keep eyes in the back of your head if you’re driving near a tram network.
• If you are driving in the mountains, you MUST sound your horn before a blind bend but you are NOT allowed to use your horn in built-up areas. The Spanish ignore this law completely.
• The use of winter tyres in Spain is regional. Look out for traffic signs indicating that winter tyres or snow chains are compulsory where you are.
• IMPORTANT: Drivers do NOT have to stop at a zebra crossing for pedestrians IF there are no lights. So don’t walk out into the road thinking traffic will stop for you.
• Some places have a speed sensor before a normal traffic light. If you are travelling at or below the speed limit, the red traffic light will change in your favour. If not, the light will remain on red to slow you down!
• In some places, to turn left across a dual carriageway you need to pull-in on the right and wait until it is clear in both directions.
• If you are overtaking a cyclist or a group of cyclists, you must leave at least 1.5m of clearance, and also reduce speed by 20kmh (WHY Spain, WHY?) You are allowed to cross a white line to overtake a cyclist AS LONG AS nothing (not even another cyclist) is coming the other way.
• Motorbikes are, bizarrely, allowed to use the bus lanes mostly marked ‘BUS-VAO’ (VAO means High Occupancy Vehicles). You’ll find these in Barcelona, Madrid and a few other places but beware the high-speed buses!

Is filtering legal in Spain?

No. You must leave a 1.5m gap between you and whoever you are overtaking.

Roads in Spain

The Spanish road network is pretty good and has a mixture of paid and free roads.

• ‘Peaje’ or ‘AP’ is a toll road. Autopistas are marked red on the map and they will have the letter ‘P’ next to the number
• Toll-free motorways are marked with the letter ‘A’ and are marked blue on the map
• Main routes /dual carriageways (green on the map)
• An “autovía” is like a motorway, except that bicycles and agricultural vehicles can use it.

Restricted Zones in Spain

Some of the bigger cities in Spain have environmental zones which only residents are allowed to drive in. These zones are indicated with ‘Area de prioridad residencial‘ and are banned to anyone without a permit (or special exemption.)

Toll roads in Spain

If you choose to use the Autopista toll roads while motorcycling in Spain, here are some tips for you:

• Just like most other tolls in Europe, you’ll usually get a ticket when you enter the toll route, then have to pay when you exit at either a manned or automatic toll booth. Occasionally, some sections of road have a fixed fee, so you pay when you enter.
• Tolls can be paid for in cash (Euros) or cards at selected booths. American Express is rarely accepted but UK credit or debit cards should work (but not always, so carry cash to be safe!)
• Alternatively, get a toll pass/ payment tag so you can use the ‘Telepeaje’, ‘VIA-T’ or ‘T’ lanes. We use  e-Movis  and it’s well worth it- especially on busy days where you can drive right on by the queues.

Bizarrely, some toll roads in Spain are being ‘demoted’ to free routes, but are still marked as AP on the map.  This site  has more information about tolls in Spain and what you might expect to pay on the various Autopistas.

Speed Limits in Spain (unless otherwise signed!)

Cars, Motorcycles and vehicles under 3.5 tonnes:

• 120 km/h (74mph) on motorways/ autovias and many dual carriageways
• 90 km/h (56 mph) on secondary roads (out of town)- can increase to 110km/h to overtake
• 50km/h (31 mph)- on roads with two or more lanes in the same direction
• 30 km/h (19 mph) on roads with one lane in each direction
• 20km/h on small lanes where road & pavement are the same level

Speed Cameras in Spain

Many roads have automatic speed cameras on in Spain and they’re quite happy to send tourists a fine through the mail.

You might also find random traffic lights, which turn to red in the middle of nowhere if you’re speeding and make you wait for a couple of minutes before turning to green so you can move off again. These are surprisingly effective!

Driving in Spain- what to do in the event of a road traffic accident

You should have a European Claim Form provided by your insurer before you leave. In the event of an accident, all parties complete and sign the form at the scene and then send a copy to your insurer for assessment.

What to do at the scene:

• Stop your motorcycle immediately but safely- out of the flow of traffic if possible.
• If a vehicle is blocking the road, use hazard lights and put the red warning triangle 30 metres from the scene to warn approaching traffic
• Name and address of all the people involved in the accident
• Vehicle registration numbers of all parties
• Insurance company details of all parties
• Take photos of damage using a camera, GoPro or phone

Other essential tips for motorcycling in Spain

Petrol (and diesel) are widely available. Many fuel stations are 24h on the main roads and are self-service with card machines.

Motorcycling in Spain- security

Spain has a fairly high crime rate and motorcycle thefts do happen, as does petty theft and pickpocketing.

We highly recommend paying extra attention to your motorbike security when travelling in Spain. I know it’s not always possible, but try not to leave your bike unattended in an unsecure area.

Touring Spain with a dog

Spain surprised us with their attitude towards dogs. They’re not often allowed on public transport, even with a muzzle, which made visiting places difficult. (PLEASE do not leave a pet in a van or car while you go sightseeing, especially on a hot day.)

Now that BREXIT has happened and the UK pet passport scheme is no longer valid, you will need to get an Animal Health Certificate before you leave the UK.

You will need to get a worming treatment done by a registered vet before you leave Spain, or between 24 hours and 5 days before re-entering the UK. Sandflies, fleas and ticks are common in Spain, so get a collar or treatment which protects against these.

More useful things to know when motorcycling in Spain

Emergency Numbers:  112 will get you everything

Language – There are several local variations of Spanish. Castilian is most common, but there is also Basque, Catalan and some smaller dialects. English usually spoken in campsites and in tourist areas, but not often elsewhere

Currency – Euro

Cards – most major credit and debit cards are accepted. American Express is only taken in large stores (not at tolls and often not at fuel stations)

Timezone – GMT+1 (or one hour ahead in BST)

Mobile Phone and Internet  – It’s usually possible to use your UK phone and data in Spain, but do check with your provider. If not, 1p Mobile SIM cards are widely available and a cheap option for phone calls.

Tipping – Service is usually included in a restaurant, but do check. It’s common to tip other services, like taxi drivers

Shops – Food prices are pretty inexpensive. Many shops close on Sundays. Bigger supermarkets may be open, but will close at lunchtime. If bakeries open on Sundays, they are often closed on Mondays instead. Many shops and businesses also shut for a long lunch (between 12-2pm) and some will not open on Wednesday afternoons.

What to pack in my bags for my motorcycle trip

Travel bags on bikes obviously have smaller volumes than those for cars. Therefore, it’s important to be organized, as well as practical, if you want the motorcycle trip to be the best from the start to the finish. If you want the rumble of your bike to be heard, pay attention to our tips for carrying luggage on a motorcycle trip. First of all, we recommend you take less clothes than usual. Don’t carry more clothing that you’ll use on the bike. When you’re on a bike all day, less is needed. Socks must be comfortable as well as good sturdy motorcycle boots that are essential for your safety. You don’t need to show up already loaded down with jacket, gloves and a helmet. We can rent them out to you. Just let us know before you arrive.

In addition, we recommend that you always take personal hygiene products in plastic containers, as they could spill or leak. Also carry a first-aid kit and spare glasses if you use them. You’re bound to have great weather on your motorcycle trip, so sunscreen lotion will come in handy.

Don’t forget to take everything along in plastic bags! This way you’ll always keep all the contents dry.

The essentials for your motorcycle trip

In addition to what was mentioned, you’ll need good gloves during the trip. At the same time, we recommend that you take a raincoat and a reflective vest. A support for your mobile phone is handy as well. These are basic items that, coming from experience, one should never forget to take along.

In addition, it’s convenient to carry a puncture repair kit and an anti-fog spray. Needless to say, you must carry a first-aid kit, it’s fundamental. But as for a GPS you don’t have to worry, we’ll include the official BMW GPS, Navigator V!

One of the most important things that you should not forget is to always carry your personal documents , as well as those for the motorcycle either in a backpack that you take separately or in an accessible place, in a pocket of the jacket. You may need these at any time and it is convenient to have them handy, so as not to unfasten all of the luggage.

The best motorcycle routes around Madrid

San Fernando de Henares motorcycle route

One of the best routes for enjoying your  motorcycle rental in Madrid  is the San Fernando de Henares route, in the direction towards Santos de la Humosa. In general, the roads are in very good condition and you’ll pass by the Almoguera reservoir. This section already is part of Castilla-La Mancha and after that it keeps on going to the Community of Madrid province.

The most difficult part of the trip is perhaps when you cross the Tajo river, although there is usually no problem during warmer seasons. The route is 151 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours.

This way, you’ll first go towards Mejorada del Campo and then onwards to Campo Real. Later, the route heads towards Carabaña, and from there to Brea de Tajo and to Almoguera. From Almoguera you’ll go to Zorita de los Canes and from there to Hueva, then to Pozo de Guadalajara and finally to Los Santos de la Humosa.

Torrelaguna circular route

A second route you can do is the Torrelaguna circular route . We recommend that you choose this one, if what you enjoy most is the sierra mountain landscape. In addition, it is an easy trip to make and you won’t find any problem reaching it. Half is paved and half is a dirt track.

The circular zone is dominated by the El Vado reservoir and the Jarama river. The total distance is around 140 kilometres and more or less it lasts about five hours. The route goes from Torrelaguna to Patones and from there to Valdesotos. After that it goes on to Valdesotos, Campillejo, Bocigano, Colmenar de la Sierra and finally to Torrelaguna.

The Santos de la Humosa route towards El Tiemblo

This is also a circular trip. It goes towards the Puerto de Cruz Verde, but to do this you’ll have to travel through San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

Then, you’ll have to go down towards Robledo de la Chavela, but we recommend that you take the road to Cebreros. Moreover, it’s advisable to make a stop in Navaluenga to rest. In the hottest seasons, we recommend stopping in several places to rest and cool off.

The distance of the route is about 370 kilometres and lasts approximately thirteen hours. The itinerary goes from Los Santos de la Humosa to Alcala de Henares.

Later you will go from Torrejon de Ardoz in the direction towards Pozuelo, to Las Rozas and then to San Lorenzo de El Escorial. From Cebreros you will travel to El Tiemblo, to San Martin de Valdeiglesias, Navas del Rey and then to Villaviciosa de Odon. Finally, the route will continue from Coslada to Torrejon de Ardoz and from there to Los Santos de la Humosa.

Motorcycle routes through natural landscapes

If you desire even more  natural landscapes , then your route is the  Presa Puente Viejas  one heading towards  El Pozo de Guadalajara . There are a lot of places to stop and connect with nature. In addition, the roads are usually in good condition. The distance is 150 kilometres and the duration is about seven hours.

Between these two locations, you’ll go through Viejas, through Pradena del Rincon, Puebla de la Sierra, Robledillo de la Jara, El Berrueco, Uceda, Usanos and through Cabanillas del Campo.

Moreover, the route through the  North Sierra of Madrid  is a great idea if you want to keep gazing at nature and, in turn, leave the heat behind.

This consists of following the outline of the mountains, visiting spectacular sites as the Cueva del Chorrillo, which is located in Tamajon. It’s also worth seeing the Atazar reservoir. To do this route you’ll travel about 130 kilometres for eight hours, not counting the times you want to stop and enjoy the views.

Most attractive routes on a motorcycle in Barcelona

One of the routes that we recommend you to do for your  motorcycle rental in Barcelona is the Montseny route, especially if you like to visit forests. It’s a natural park that can be reached by taking the C-33 from the Gothic Quarter. It has a lot of curves beginning from Seva.

From Seva, we recommend that you go to Viladrau, with spectacular bridges and waterfalls. If you set out towards Turo de l’Home , you’ll visit the highest mountain in all of Montseny. And from there, go on to Trencat  in order to bathe in the Tordera river. On the way back, it’s worth visiting the coastal promenade.

Another of the most interesting routes is the  Garraf Park . It’s an amazing site, and not only will you be visiting one of the most important ecological reserves in Barcelona, but also all of Catalonia. The start of this route is located on the road from Barcelona to Castelldefels. Although there are several curves, the road is in very good condition. Also, after all of them you can enjoy the view and look off.

Once you have reached the viewpoint, it is worthwhile to stop to appreciate the landscape. The beauty of the sea will surely dazzle you. Once you continue, keep ascending. The coastal landscape will be transformed, but the views will always remain spectacular.

Along your way, you will reach the road to Palau Novella . Visit its Buddhist monastery hidden in the mountains, making the most of your motorcycle rental in Barcelona. If you want to continue changing landscapes, take the BV-2111 road. It will take you in the direction of Olivella, a unique little village. It stands out especially for its rural architecture. Then, continue your route to Canyellas and visit the castle.

If you aren’t tired yet, visit the areas near the Parc de Foix, as well as the Castellet. Go to Sitges and from there, you can return to Barcelona following the C-32. This route will be approximately 42 kilometres.

One very special route to take advantage of is the one that runs along the entire coastline of Barcelona. It’s about four and a half kilometres long. This is the coast of the area of Ciutat Vella and Sant Marti.

Travelling the Way of St. James by motorcycle

One of the best experiences you can live through with your motorbike rental in Spain is to do the  Way of St. James ( Camino de Santiago ).  The experience gives you everything at once: touring, connection with yourself, culture, new dishes to try, perhaps religiosity, but always spirituality.

The most common way is to do it on foot, although many pilgrims prefer to do it by cycling. But what we love the most is to travel the Way of St. James on a motorcycle. Are you up for it?

The experience of doing the  Way of St. James  by motorcycle is a great opportunity for you to enjoy the complete and original route. In addition, this opportunity will be mixed with the new knowledge of perfect roads and views of unique landscapes as well as new places.

You can set out a much more complete route thanks to doing it by motorcycle. In turn, you’ll have more time and tranquillity to enjoy all of its aspects. Whether the culture, cuisine or landscapes, among others, along the entire Way of St. James.

The routes are usually planned to take over a week. Eight or nine days would be the ideal amount of time for visiting the autonomous provinces through which it passes. For example, you can visit Castile and Leon, Asturias or Cantabria, as well as Galicia.

A unique opportunity, if you have the chance, is to make your trip longer and use your  motorcycle rental inside Portugal . To do that you can travel the  Way of St. James  using the  French Route , which is one of the most common. In the end, everything is up to you and according to your tastes and priorities.

Best motorcycle routes in Portugal

If you want to add kilometres to your  motorcycle rental, go to Portugal . This country, as well as being close, has some novel and incomparable landscapes and the best thing is that you can start the trip in Spain. The route goes through Spain and then crosses one of its points at the border.

Our recommended routes do not focus on the main roads of Portugal, as they always have too much traffic. We prefer to recommend secondary roads that, in addition, allow you to see beautiful landscapes. Some of the sections have many curves and in others you just have to follow a straight path and go right up to the north of Portugal.

A good option for your motorcycle ride through Portugal is to do the route that borders its west coast. For this, you can take national roads. Two examples would be the N-268 or the N-120. We recommend this suggestion because both will let you deviate and visit unique places like Praia do Monte Clerigo, or the incredible views of the Portuguese coast like Cape Sines.

However, you can also follow your route on the A2 highway. This will take you to one of the largest wetlands in Portugal: the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve.

If you want to include Lisbon within your visit, the best way to do it is to make your route following the 25 de Abril Bridge , or the Vasco da Gama Bridge . In addition, you can take a detour towards the national road 6 and skirt the area of Portugal that has the shape of a nose on the map. A great option if you like your biker route full of curves.

On the other hand, there is also a good route towards Oporto. Although you always have the option of doing it by highway, we recommend you cross the Serras de Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park or the Estrela Natural Park. The views are always going to be better than those of any highway and you will surely fall in love.

Although you will have to park the bike for a while to go the way walking, we recommend that you visit the  Dunas de San Jacinto  in Portugal and the  Ria de Aveiro . From there, you can cross the border into Galicia also by highway if you are in a hurry.  Although, as always, we recommend an alternative route with curves and above all, many landscapes and nature like the Montesinho Natural Park .

Motorcycle roads in Portugal and southern Spain

If you want to rent a motorbike in Spain in the south and then finish your route in Portugal, we have to applaud you on your choice. Without a doubt, it’s a route you will enjoy and the best known of them is the one that goes along the  Via del Infante , from Ayamonte (Huelva) and goes towards the  Algarve . So you will end up really enjoying your motorcycle rental in Portugal . For this route you’ll have to follow the A-22.

If you like more mountainous landscapes, we recommend you travel north of Seville. The 600 curves road is an unbeatable environment. This route is a challenge for bikers. You can go from Cazalla to San Nicolas del Puerto and visit the Hueznar waterfalls.

Another option is to take your route through Cadiz in the most Atlantic part. So we recommend you start in Tarifa and go on to Lentiscal, Zahara de los Atunes and Caños de Meca. You’ll stop at the Los Alcornocales natural park, the Dune of Bolonia, the Barbate marshes and you’ll go on towards the famous beaches of Caños de Meca.

If you later want to head to Portugal from the south, your best option is the Algarve. We recommend that you take advantage of Faro as a rallying point if you need an excuse to visit it. In any case you are in luck, because when your favourite season comes around to do the biker route, Portugal is a country that has a fantastic climate year-round in the south. So you can make the most of your motorcycle rental in Portugal in any month.

Even in summer, it’s not too hot thanks to the breeze from the Atlantic Ocean. If you want to go to the south of Portugal, we recommend that you follow the national highway 125. It goes along the south coast of Portugal and it’s very pleasant to cross. However, if you especially like curves or prefer landscapes only seen on routes made through mountains and sierra, you’ll have to go a little further inland.

The route that we recommend in this case is that once you get to Faro, you’ll go in the direction of Sao Bras de Alportel. Then, continue towards Barranco Velho, where you’ll have spectacular mountain landscapes. From there, we recommend you continue towards Sao Bartolomeu de Messines and then towards Silves. From there, the path that we recommend you follow is the one that goes to Monchique, then to Portimao, and later to Lagos and Cabo de San Vicente.

When you are in Faro, as we have mentioned, the first thing you will see is Sao Bras. To get to Barranco Velho you will have to follow the National 2.

To do a route somewhat shorter than the others, since it only has 100 kilometres, one option is to go from Lagos to Faro or vice versa. This way, what you’ll see are mainly its coastal landscapes, since it borders all the southern area of Portugal.

The route of Casteles in Huelva

You can also choose to do the route of Castles in Huelva on your motorcycle. The tour starts by going to the city of Aroche on the N-441. Later, we recommend that you continue with your bike on the N-431 and turn right onto the A-495 and then turn towards the N-433. The weather is usually great, so stop and enjoy it. Later, take the HU-8101 to return to where you started. The route is approximately 131 kilometres.

As for the distances, when you leave Aroche, you’ll have about 41 kilometres to Encinasola. From there, there’ll only be 17 and a half kilometres to Cumbres de San Bartolome and from there to Cumbres Mayores, it will be about a 13 minute trip along 10 kilometres.

Later you’ll have to go in the direction of Cala, where you will take more time, since it’s about 40 kilometres. Later until Santa Olalla del Cala you only have to travel 12 kilometres on your motorcycle. From there to Aracena, it’s already 41 kilometres, but the estimated time is less, since it can take about 15 minutes, thanks to the conditions of the road and there being fewer curves.

The next thing is to go from Aracena to Cortegana about 27 kilometres. Here the time becomes longer and it’ll be about half an hour. On this route you can enjoy the richness of its landscapes with unique fauna. In addition, there is a lot of woody vegetation, as well as irrigated grasses and reforestation done with piñotero pines.

Another option for touring the south of Andalucia and taking a detour to Portugal is to start from the capital of Huelva. However, if you prefer to continue seeing the south of Spain, we recommend that you head towards Palos de la Frontera.

From there, you can travel 12 kilometres from Huelva in the direction of Mazagon. You’ll enjoy the views of the mouth of the Tinto River. To do this, the road you have to follow is the national road N-442, which passes not only through Palos de la Frontera, but also through the municipality of Moguer.

You could also go from Aroche to Cumbres Mayores. In total, this will be about 52 and a half kilometres in 45 minutes and from Aroche, you’ll see many cultural monuments, such as the historic quarter or Turobriga, an ancient Hispano-Roman city.

When you are going to Cumbres Mayores, you’ll come across Cortegana. It’s a beautiful municipality that is located on top of a hill and will be located in the direction of the Sierra de Aracena and the Picos de Aroche. Once you arrive at Cumbres Mayores, you can go towards Santa Olalla del Cala, which will take almost one hour along 52 kilometres.

You won’t regret visiting this natural environment, such as the pastures or its castle built in the fourteenth century. Around here, you’ll pass through Hinojales and through Cañaveral and Arroyomolinos de Leon. These places have a mild climate and originally were colonized by settlers who came from Leon, hence the name.

Later on, from Santa Olalla de Cala to Aracena you’ll have to travel about 41 kilometres in just over half an hour. If you’re heading west you’ll be on the border with Portugal once you get to Rosal de la Frontera, so you can deviate and continue your route in that country. On this route, you’ll pass by Zufre, which stands out for its landscapes and its reservoirs.

However, if you want to continue travelling through Andalusia, you can continue along the edge of the natural park towards Higuera de la Sierra. You’ll find meadows that have chestnut trees, landscapes with holm oaks and cork trees along your entire route.

Later we recommend a route from Aracena to Alajar, which is 12 kilometres. Moreover, it doesn’t take king since it’s only about 20 minutes. You’ll see new sierra landscapes and a natural park , as well as being able to visit the historical urban centre . Every possibility is mixed into this route in addition to being able to see the Gruta de las Maravillas .

Going from Alajar to Fuenteheridos will only be 6 kilometres and takes 10 minutes. Its streets are small, so we recommend you be careful with the bike or even stop and just do it walking. It’s worth it however, seeing its great rural and architectural beauty.

Its Roman origin combines with the memory of the different civilisations which have settled here in towns like Seville , Zafra, Plasencia, Hervás, Baños de Montemayor, Béjar, Zamora, León and Gijón. You can also visit two World Heritage Cities on the route: Mérida (with some of the world’s best-conserved Roman sites) and Cáceres (with its historic Jewish quarter and Roman, Monument and Renaissance buildings).

Motorcycle touring in Spain

Kev's been riding since acquiring half shares in a CZ175 field bike back in the seventies, passed his test in a blizzard on Christmas Eve 1985, and got his first job on a bike mag in 1990. Likes: long distance touring and short-distance twisties. Currently owns a 1987 GSX-R1100, a 1992 Ducati 400SS, a 1973 Honda SS50, a 1978 Honda CX500, a 1988 Honda Bros special, a 1957 Mobylette and a 110cc pit bike. None of them work.

Speed limits are similar in Spain to the UK, but you need to be aware of where they apply

Quite a few changes here from 2021. The general limit on normal roads (with no central separation or hard shoulder) out of town is 90km/h (55mph) unless signed otherwise. If there's a second lane in one direction (usually a short overtaking lane) that goes up to 100km/h (60mph), and the same applies to roads with a hard shoulder each side. Motorways are 120km/h (75mph) (although that may be increased to 130km/h (80mph) soon).

All that's pretty much as it was before, but there are significant changes to the rules for urban roads , which came into effect in May 2021: Single lane roads with a pavement alongside are now limited to 20kmh (12mph), two-way roads with one lane in each direction are now limited to 30km/h (18mph), and only on roads with two or more lanes each way are you allowed to reach the heady heights of 50km/h (30mph), down from the former 80km/h (50mph). You can expect these limits to be widely ignored by the locals, but you can also expect to be fined heavily if you're caught doing the same.

In small towns and villages there are often speed sensors on the way in. If you're within the limit, no problem. If you're over the limit they automatically turn the next set of traffic lights red, so you're held up for longer than if you'd stuck to the limit in the first place. Simple but effective.

While it’s not speed-related, it’s worth knowing if you have an older bike that you must ride with dipped beam on at all times. Daytime Running Lights are fine (though not at night, obviously).

Again, some significant changes from 2021.

Experienced travellers in Spain have always appreciated the sensible rule that allowed you to increase speed by up to 20km/h (12mph) over the limit in order to overtake slower traffic. Unfortunately, as of early 2021 that law's been revoked, so in theory you can only overtake if you can do so without exceeding the posted limit. Yeah, right.

New rules are also in place to protect cyclists from other road users. If you have to overtake a cyclist or a group of cyclists, you must leave at least 1.5m of clearance, AND reduce your speed by 20kmh. It's worth noting that you can cross a white line to overtake cyclists if there's nothing coming the other way, but you’re not allowed to overtake at all if there are cyclists coming the other way.

In some places (mostly Barcelona and Madrid, but there are others), there are dedicated bus lanes, marked 'BUS-VAO'. VAO is short for the Spanish for High Occupancy Vehicles, which includes bikes, so you're allowed to use these lanes. Watch out for the buses though; they don't slow down for much...

Things have changed a bit since Brexit. You need your driving licence (plus 1968 pattern International Driving Permit if you still have a paper licence or one issued by the Isle of Man, Gibralter or Channel Islands), passport (issued less than 10 years previously and with more than three months left to run on your return date), registration document (and form V103 from your finance company if appropriate) and proof of insurance (you no longer need a Green Card). You must be able to present any of these on demand if pulled over – failure to do so is punishable by an immediate fine. 

Just like any holiday, a trip on a motorcycle – be it in the UK, Europe or beyond – can be ruined by delays, lost documents, illness and more. There are plenty of travel insurance options, but you need to make sure you get a policy that includes riding motorcycles, and if it does, that it's for bikes of the engine size you'll be riding (many only cover up to 250cc). At its most basic, you should look for insurance that provides cover for the following: 

Medical expenses

Loss or theft of personal possessions

Lost or delayed luggage

Loss of your passport and other documents

Travel delays and disruptions

Having to cut your holiday short

In addition though, if you’re taking a motorcycle (or you're renting one while you’re away) be sure that your insurer will cover you for any medical expenses, should you have an accident. You must also think about where you’re riding – some policies won’t cover you if you’re trail or enduro riding, or if you’re on a race-track. Remember – this isn’t about your bike being covered, it’s about your medical expenses, should the worst happen.

If you're only going away once, a single-trip policy will likely be all you need, but also consider an annual policy, which could extend to cover your family holidays too (a good insurer should also be able to offer cover for your whole family). 

Breakdown insurance is highly recommended. Read the small print though; many policies insist you buy cover for the entire journey, so cover must include the day that you leave home and not just begin as you land overseas, or you may find you have no cover at all. You should also carry a Global Health Insurance (GHIC) card to avoid potential expensive medical bills (existing EHIC cards are also still accepted while in date), but it's also recommended to take out separate medical insurance including repatriation (see above). 

You must carry a hi-vis gilet or jacket at all times, although you only need to wear it if you're actually stopped by the side of the road.  

If you need glasses for riding, you must carry a spare pair as well (look on the bright side - if you lose one pair, the second pair will help you find them).

You need a UK sticker on the bike.

Some sources say you are required to wear gloves at all times, and anecdotal evidence says you might be stopped for riding without them. However there doesn't actually seem to be a law in place to that effect, and we've seen Guardia Civil officers riding gloveless...

You must ride with a dipped headlight / Daytime Running Light during the day.

Until recently you were allowed to use radar detectors in Spain to give you warning of speed traps; not any more...

Depending on who you ask, you'll be told that Bluetooth headsets aren't allowed; that's true for the kind of unit designed to act as a hands-free set for a mobile phone (any kind of mobile phone use while riding/driving is forbidden), but a Bluetooth adapter relaying your GPS instructions, music or the witterings of your other half are fine so long as it uses speakers in the helmet, not in-ear buds.

One oddity; you're not allowed to use your horn in built-up areas. Naturally, everyone does.

The Spanish police are mostly very similar to the  French  set-up, with three separate forces with overlapping responsibilities (the Basque, Navarre and Catalonia regions have a slightly different arrangement). 

The Guardia Civil are part of the military - they're the ones you're most likely to see out in the country and they're the ones who man the speed traps and roadblocks. They carry guns and they're quite prepared to use them, so be polite.

The Policía Nacional are civilians, based country-wide but concentrated on the towns and cities, so you're unlikely to have dealings with them unless you're unfortunate enough to get your bike stolen, in which case you need to report it to them. 

Policía Local are just what they sound like – locally employed by towns and cities, with some responsibility for local traffic offences. You shouldn't fall foul of them unless you park on a narrow pavement (less than 3.5m wide), or chain your bike to a lamp-post, or wash your bike on the street, or do a burnout or a big skid – all of which are illegal. Or unless you run one of them over, which is also frowned upon.

Away from main population centres you don't see a heavy police presence, but if they do stop you for speeding, they're usually pretty unforgiving about it – fines go up to 600 euros for serious offences. On the spot fines are the norm, and they can impound your bike until it's paid.

The roads are generally great, but there can be rough surfaces…

The road surface in Spain vary hugely. At their best they're smooth, flat (usually no camber) and grippy. At their worst it's like the surface of the moon just after a meteorite shower. They often go from one extreme to the other with no warning, usually at the borders between different administrative regions (and sometimes even just different local councils). 

In summer, in the dryer areas (which means most of Spain) there's a gradual build-up of dust that can make the surface very slippery indeed – the later in the year, as a rule, the slippier it gets, waiting for the heavy rains of winter to clear it off again. So exercise caution. 

In towns, there's a similar build-up of rubber and oil residue, which doesn't get washed away, so it can be just as dangerous. 

And then there's the white lines. Spanish white lines really are something special – they must be 99% Teflon. Absolutely no grip to them at all, even in the dry, and in the wet you could spin the rear up on a push-bike, let alone anything with an engine.

It’s no surprise that the majority of the world’s motorcycle press launches are held in Spain

Out in the country, wild or feral animals can be a problem. Especially stray semi-wild dogs, but you might also come across horses, goats, cattle and sheep wandering about, usually just around a blind bend. If you're really unlucky you might even come across a camel in the road; remnants of a herd imported from the Canary Islands 200 years ago and left to roam free in the south.

Back to more mundane hazards, traffic approaching from the right needs careful watching – in some instances it has priority (like the  French Priorité à Droite  rule), and as is usual in such situations, the locals will exercise that right without even looking.

On a similar theme, roundabouts are a fairly recent arrival in Spain, and it's fair to say that the Spanish haven't entirely got the hang of them yet. Be very careful, especially if you're on the roundabout and there's traffic approaching fast from the right – you've got priority, but that's not a lot of help if you've also got a SEAT front grille embedded in your kidneys.

The biggest danger in tourist areas though is other Brits. Whether they're permanent residents, half-and-halfers wintering in the sun or short-term holidaymakers venturing out in a hire car, they have a nasty habit of forgetting they're supposed to be driving on the right and crashing headlong into whatever comes around the next corner.

Since even the locals tend to drive in the middle of the road on smaller roads, it makes a lot of sense to take a very wide line on the way into blind bends.

Don’t be put off by all this – we’ve rounded up everything that could go wrong, and Spain is one of our favourite places in the world to ride. The stunning roads and scenery are why the majority of motorcycle press launces are held in Spain, and with  Brittany Ferries  running down to Santander and Bilbao, or  BikeShuttle  getting very close with Toulous, you don’t have to ride through France to get there (though if you take the back roads, it’s well worthwhile, then get the Ferry home from Spain at the end).

Eastern Picos & Basque Country

Even just leaving the ferry port is an excuse for a stunning motorcycle ride through the Picos mountains

Finding great riding near the ports of Santander and Bilbao is as easy as A,B,C… Asturias, the Basque Country and Cantabria (and La Rioja as well). There are the twin attractions of the coast, with its sleepy fishing villages and golden beaches, and the mountains. The chain of Cantabrian mountains — which includes the Picos de Europa — delivers spectacular scenery, as grey-tipped peaks rise above verdant slopes, with fabulously twisty roads climbing passes and cutting through limestone gorges.

WHERE TO STAY

Midway between Bilbao and Santander is the Cantabrian resort of Laredo – famed for its massive sandy beach. It should be famous for the quality of the riding in the hills around it. Routes 3, 4 & 5

This small Basque beach town attracts hordes of surfers in summer and has a suitably laid-back atmosphere. An easy ride from Santander or Bilbao. Routes 6, 7 & 8. Hotel tip: Hotel Zarautz

OFF THE BIKE

The tiny village of Covadonga , high in the Picos was where the Christian reconquest of Spain began, evicting the Moors. There’s a spectacular church and even-more-beautiful lakes. A real must-visit destination.

COVALANAS CAVE

Beat the heat with a trip into the cool of the huge, spectacular Covalanas Cave , featuring prehistoric paintings. Tours cost just €3, last 45 minutes and leave once an hour. Short but steep walk from the parking area to the entrance. Best booked in advance.

A spectacular cliff-lined bowl at the foot of a peak – with a difference. For €17 you can ride Europe’s longest single-span cable car all the way to the top, over a belly-flipping 753m drop… The views are incredible in this region .

Immortalised by Picaso’s painting, the Basque town of Guernica was savagely bombed in the Spanish Civil War. Now rebuilt, it has became a symbol of reconstruction and peace. Make sure to visit the Biscayan Assembly House.

GUGGENHEIM BILBAO

For high culture, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is on another level. The spectacular modernist building sets the tone for the exhibitions it houses. Admission cost is €10.

Laguardia is a fabulous medieval walled town perched on a low hill, its towered church visible from miles away. Packed with surprises — from caves to cafés — it’s a great daytrip destination. Don’t skip the nearby Ysios Bodega.

La Rioja is filled with lovely towns, but the capital of the region has the most to see and do. Eat tapas on Calle Laurel and visit the museum. Or splash out on a vineyard tour and wine-tasting (from €38 – plus taxi!) Must-ride road N-621 Potes to Riaño, Puerto de San Glorio Fabulous views, incredible corners – no wonder it’s one of the most popular riding roads in the Picos.

We have divided Spain into three areas for you:

1. South Western Spain   If your motorbike tour goes to the southwest of Spain, then you will be on the road starting from Málaga to western Andalusia , the Atlantic coast and Extremadura .

2. South Eastern Spain   In south-eastern Spain, you will visit eastern Andalusia , the Mediterranean coast and Valencia on your tour from Málaga.

3. Northern Spain, France   In the north of Spain, your motorbike tour from Barcelona takes you to the mountains of the Pyrenees , towards the beautiful routes on the Atlantic coast and to the south of France .

The self-guided tours in southern Spain are planned to be ridden all year round . Therefore, they are also ideal as a winter getaway. The tours in the Pyrenees can be booked from May to October.

When booking your tour, you can let us know if you prefer to ride longer and like lots of small bends, in which case our frequent rider category is the right choice for you. If you prefer to arrive at the hotels a little earlier, perhaps have your pillion with you and like to ride on wider roads with long bends, then our laid back rider category is the right choice for you.

IMTBIKE ROUTE rating

It is essential to know the different skill levels needed to participate in the IMTBIKE TOURS that are offered to you. IMTBIKE makes sure that it offers different tours for all riding styles and levels. The IMTBIKE team always works diligently in designing our routes. This is a laborious process which entails reviewing all road choices before selecting the best option for an IMTBIKE tour.

The most experienced motorcyclists looks for roads that require technical skill; narrow twisty roads with little traffic and endless curves. But these same roads would be too difficult for a less experienced rider.

The local driving habits, the amount of traffic, the asphalt quality and the radius of the curves vary considerably from country to country and even in different regions of the same country. They will also vary depending on the season of the year. All of these factors have been studied by IMTBIKE and have been taken into consideration when rating our tours.

IMTBIKE thinks it is also important to know about the different types of roads you will be enjoying on your tour. To understand the road types easier, IMTBIKE has divided them into two categories, and we have calculated an approximate percentage of each on all of our tours.

• TOURING ROADS: These are wider roads comprised mainly of larger radius sweepers. They are still curvy roads but not tight mountainous twisty curves. Please remember that you will ride very few straight roads on IMTBIKE tours!
• CHALLENGING ROADS: These are roads that are tight twisty turns which require more technical skill. Many times they will be narrower roads without a shoulder and sometimes with steep inclines or descents. Normally they will be mountainous roads accompanied by spectacular sceneries.

If you have never ridden a motorcycle outside of your country, or if you have little experience riding on mountain roads with many curves, we recommend that you choose a tour rated moderate or intermediate. If you have any questions or doubts please do not hesitate to call or email us. We are always happy to answer your questions to make sure that you choose the best tour for your riding level.

This route offers wider sweeping turns that are easy to maneuver. This route may have some tighter turns in a few places but this will be the exception. Regardless, even on moderate tours you must be able to ride a large cylinder motorcycle in any condition. Never plan to learn how to ride a motorcycle on an IMTBIKE tour. We recommend having a minimum of 8.000 km (5.000 miles) of experience riding a large cylinder motorcycle to participate on a MODERATE rated IMTBIKE Tour and you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.

Intermediate

This route rating can have sections of very twisty curves on narrow roads with no center line to divide the road. There will also wider radius curves on these routes. Traffic conditions can be intense at times in some urban environments and the local driving habits may seem aggressive and unpredictable to you. It is imperative that you are an experienced motorcyclist. We recommend that you have a minimum of 12.000 km (7500 miles) of large cylinder motorcycle experience to participate on a INTERMEDIATE rated IMTBIKE Tour and you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.

This route rating has long sections of technical narrow twisty roads and sometimes single lane roads. These twisty roads will often be in mountains where steep inclines and descents will be commonplace. Some riding days can be long and challenging. Traffic conditions can be intense at times in some urban environments and the local driving habits may seem aggressive and unpredictable to you. It is imperative that you are a very experienced motorcyclist on a large cylinder motorcycle. We recommend that you have a minimum of 16.000 km (10.000 miles) of large cylinder motorcycle experience on an ADVANCE rated IMTBIKE Tour and of course you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.

IMTBIKE Average Daily Riding Hours

5 to 7 hours 6 to 8 hours 7 to 9 hours

How many hours a day you ride on a tour is important information in helping you decide on the right IMTBIKE tour for you. Some tour members want to ride as many hours as possible everyday, while others prefer to stop more frequently and dedicate more time to enjoying the scenery, visiting cultural sights and arrive at the hotel earlier to relax before dinner. The daily riding hours are calculated including the coffee breaks and photo stops but they do not include the time taken for lunch.

Normally we’ll start our riding day at 9:30am and we will take about a one hour lunch break sometime between 1pm and 2pm. So if the daily riding hours for a given tour are 5-7, then you will arrive at the hotel between 3:30pm- 5:30pm depending on the average speed of the group.

Sergi, our faithful van driver and sherpa, was a pleasure to have along. The bikes were in pristine condition and performed flawlessly (Beemers, of course). Our fellow riders have become our newest friends and made the trip even more enjoyable. Then there was Spain...The scenery was magnificent, from the mountains to the shores of the Mediterranean. The roads and chosen routes were blissful. The hotels and meals were spectacular. Even the weather cooperated...barely a few sprinkles and only after we parked for the night! All in all this was a fantastic trip. I would go again in a flash!

Hi IMTBIKE I would like to provide some feedback from my recent rental from Barcelona. I am both a qualified mechanic and licensed aircraft engineer and as such I have high expectations from service providers when renting anything mechanical. When I arrived at IMTBike Barcelona the bike was in exceptional condition and ready to go. I had freighted my helmet and boots and they were there waiting for me having been safely stored for about 3 weeks. The briefing of the bike was carried out in an extremely professional manner in perfect English and all the assistance I could ever have needed was offered including the safe storage of my excess baggage. After some route tips on heading north in to the rest of Europe and the easiest way out Barcelona I headed out of town happy with the bike and very happy with the service provided by the IMTBike staff. The bike performed faultlessly for 14 days. Both Sergi and Ruben went above and beyond in making themselves available and making sure that I made my flight back to Australia on time, they even called me a taxi as I don’t speak Spanish so I didn’t have to carry my bags and bike gear anywhere. Ruben and Paulo as the best guides I could imagine. They were amazing individually and as a team. Obviously the route plans and navigation went without a hitch. Ruben has a beautiful way to push the pace in the sporting terrain with good visibility and warm tires but more importantly he knows when and where to slow the pace. His guide’s local knowledge was so extensive it’s like he has ESP! Paolo was a great support in the van. As the “client/organizer” I really appreciated the logistical strategy of having the van literally following the motorcade. Paolo is of course brilliant and 100% fluent in English which really helped our group learn at the villages and cultural stops about Spain , geography, history, IMTBIKE, agriculture and pop culture-always in a respectful thoughtful and diplomatic manner. Daily Itinerary

• Day 1: Arrival in Málaga

Day 2: Málaga – Costa del Sol – Sierra Nevada - Granada

Day 3: granada – córdoba, day 4: córdoba - seville, day 5: seville - rest day, day 6: seville – white towns, day 7: white towns - ronda, day 8: ronda – serranía de ronda - málaga, day 9: flight home, day 1: arrival malaga, safety briefing and welcome dinner.

Transfer included from the Airport to the hotel. You’ll have time to rest and visit the city until we meet up again in the evening for a welcome briefing in the hotel. After the briefing you’ll have dinner with your guides at a local Spanish restaurant. The first and last days mentioned in the itinerary correspond to first and last days of the tour. Keep in mind that, depending on which country you are flying from you may need to leave a day early so please reserve your flights accordingly.

Leaving Malaga, we’ll head for the eastern most parts of the Costa del Sol. From the seat of our motorcycles we’ll hug the coast as we watch the waves roll into the shore. Curve after curve we’ll follow the Mediterranean before turning sharply inland to start the climb into the rugged mountains. We’ll climb into the imposing Sierra Nevadas past ski areas on the highest paved highway in Spain. Awaiting you are the steep, narrow streets of Granada, its historic center, the Albayzín and the unequaled beauty of the Alhambra Palace.

On our third day we will leave Granada on a beautiful little road surrounded by forests and mountains north of the Sierra Nevada. The forest will give way to an incredible expanse of seemingly infinite rows of olive trees carpeting the Andalusian soil, truly an amazing sight. After that, on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, Cordoba awaits us with a charming and lively atmosphere. We will be able to wander its narrow streets and visit the famous Mezquita.

Get ready for a day that is packed full of great motorcycling roads and beautiful views. The route heads north towards the Sierra Morena, the region’s best kept motorcycling secret. This mountain range is the northern border of Andalucia. We’ll take one curve after another through the mountains and then south along the splendid Guadalquivir River to Sevilla. Sevilla is the capital of Andalucia and the heart of Spain’s welcoming Southern hospitality.

Today is a rest day, perfect for taking in the city of Seville and its impressive Gothic cathedral, countless small churches and interesting neighborhoods full of narrow streets, Flamenco music, tapas bars etc. You will also have the option of riding into the Sierra Morena where you can visit the colorful mines of Riotinto or taste the very best of the Spanish Iberian Ham, the Jamón de Jabugo.

Today we’ll say goodbye to the magical Andalusian capital and all its art and beauty. We’ll head south on tranquil roads through pleasant rural landscapes and large plains. Next we’ll climb quickly into a nice, intense section of the Grazalema Mountains, crossing over the most impressive mountain passes of the entire range. The day will come to an end in one of the prettiest pueblos blancos of Andalucía, located on the top of a narrow cliff.

Today is a very full day with no shortage of perfect curves amidst the mountains range of Cadiz. The amazing landscape includes cork tree forests and grazing Spanish bulls. It’s here where you’ll pass through the numerous Pueblos Blancos that have made this region famous. You’ll rest for the night in one of the most memorable cities in all of Spain, Ronda. Peer over the 120 meter cliff from the “New Bridge” (over 300 years old!), or check out the Roman Bridge that remains intact after several thousand years. You can also lose yourself amongst the lively little streets or visit the oldest bull ring in Spain.

Departing Ronda you’ll head straight into the heart of the mountains, snaking along lonely roads past magnificent landscapes. Mountain after mountain, town after town until you return to the IMTBike office, where you’ll say goodbye to your faithful motorcycle. You’ll then have time to rest in the hotel or do some last minute shopping and visit the city of Malaga one more time. The guides will take you out to an excellent restaurant where you’ll enjoy a farewell dinner and we can say “Hasta pronto!” “Until next time!”

Today you will say your goodbyes to the guides and the other tour members (now your new friends) as you make your way to the airport to fly home. We’ll see you again on our next motorcycle adventure together!

• Length : 34 miles
• Route : NH Route 112 between Conway and Lincoln, NH
• Highlights : The Kancamagus Highway , aka “The Kanc” is renowned for its breathtaking fall foliage, but it's stunning year-round. The route winds through the White Mountain National Forest, offering sweeping views, waterfalls, and opportunities to stop at scenic overlooks. • Route 100 (Vermont)
