Snowgoons is a duo that is enigmatic, talented, and extremely good at what they do. Working mainly as a channel for collaborations with other amazing artists, DJ Illegal and Det have carved out a piece of the European hip hop music industry just for themselves, and have created a legacy to be remembered for decades to come. They're original, dedicated to their art, and keen to promote both themselves and other artists of the same calibre.

I saw Snowgoons at the Terrain Neutre Theatre in Nantes, France, earlier this year, and I was blown away by their energy. They had the entire crowd up and moving, playing some of their greatest hits, and never letting the energy of the room dwindle. It was intoxicating, and their music was a perfect mix of rhythmic bass lines coupled with intelligent and hard-hitting lyrics. It was clear that they take pride in what they do, and they know exactly how to do it.

I'm really excited for their next collaboration, and I feel like even though it'll be hard to top the work they've done so far, they've really been hitting the European music scene hard with their talent, commitment to perfection, and completely original sound. It's the kind of music that leaves you thinking, and hoping for more.

Snowgoons x Grind Mode Cypher :: Goon Mode

A goon’s sole purpose is simply to scare and get rid of the opponents they face. The methods may vary, but the purpose remains the same, nonetheless. In hip-hop, that very competitive scorched-earth policy is embodied in battle rappers, goons who specialize in rhymed lines specially crafted to boost ego, wow listeners, and destroy opponents. The emcees in Grind Mode Cypher qualify as such rappers, and have collectively brought their brand of hardcore hip-hop onto a full-length LP appropriately with the Snowgoons. The German production team have joined forces with GMC, resulting in “Goon Mode”: A double album which, as Lingo states, is “ like Betty Ford: A clinic for bars. ” Disclaimer: This isn’t a rap album multi-faceted with different topics, pop-friendly melodies, or genre-bending. It’s just a group of emcees showing off their rap skills over head-nodding hardcore sounds.

GMC’s Lingo and Ayok are the most prominent emcees, having verses on all eighteen tracks (the former even produces several of them, about a third). Surprisingly, the Snowgoons appear less often, producing only five tracks, with the remaining seven in the hands of beatsmiths Evil Dead, Asko67, Boomtact, and Sevin Soprano. Though GM cyphers generally feature hungry unsigned rappers from all over, they often include a special appearance from an established underground emcee. On “Goon Mode”, such rappers come in the form of Termanology, Block McCloud, CL Smooth, and Diabolic, to name a few. Even though, inevitably at some point in the album, a listener will see the aggressive bars become redundant, there are undeniably several quotables from every track. Also, each track is like hearing audio versions of the cypher videos GMC produces as they’re the same time length, some being close to ten minutes.

The title-track is where the album begins, Lingo starts it off with his customary “ Uh-huh! Grind Mode Cypher… ” greeting intro before delving into his bars. Much like Dr. Greene from “ER”, Lingo sets the tone and is a tough act to follow. He produces the beat as well, complete with record scratches and tough snares. “Time’s Up” actually has a song structure, with Lingo providing the hook twice. The Snowgoons-produced “Skills Don’t Kill” has low-key snares and kickdrums with an overall menacing atmosphere and is capped off with a verse from Block McCloud, though the monotone Arichusestts gets credit for his wordplay and ability to flow over this beat. On “Rap Lords”, Carolina’s Smeag the Scientist breaks the seeming monotony as he had the most standout voice and delivery. Boomtact’s “1-2 Punch” almost sounds skeletal, but GMC mainstay Massaka comes through in the middle with a razor-sharp verse. The single “Fierce Darts” is the first to feature all three members of THR3AT (Lingo, Ayok, and Don Pera) and Aly K, the album’s sole female emcee:

“Savage Goons” has a Snowgoons vibe around the production, but it’s actually courtesy of Evil Dead with its boom-bap drum and sampled instrumental score. It consists of over ten emcees, the most known of which is Long Island’s Diabolic who makes the first of his two appearances on “Goon Mode.” The self-produced “True Story” shows how crafty Lingo is with bars (“ 90 degrees, taking L’s from the corners / You need to let that shit go, but I can smell you a hoarder ”) and also features French rapper Don Tox. When hearing “Light Up the Mic”, it reminded me of a JMT/AOTP track from Evil Dead’s production, consisting of sampling and looping strings. Though it has a Termanology feature, “King $#!+” shows the chemistry between Lingo and Ayok as they start of the track trading bars without missing a beat, so to speak. “I Wanna Know” is noteworthy for being the one track with the smallest roster, consisting solely of THR3AT. The second single, “Slugfest”, is exactly that…a boom-bap-laden lyrical beatdown:

The final third of the album is a Lingo-Snowgoons affair in terms of production, being behind the boards for half each. On “Not Ya Ordinary”, Lingo brings his usual brand of music, but adds the element of a sampled voice to the production before CL Smooth ends the track with his own verse. “Beast on the Mic” is classic Snowgoons, a sampled orchestra flipped into an epic grimy sonic barrage. The best verse on the track goes to Easty the Muscle, with his intense delivery and bars (“ Keep that Swisher lit, red hot trip quick to Swtizerland / These Wolves raised a GOAT like Tom Brady in Michigan / The motherfucking muscle, see the bars that I’m liftin’ in ”). The organ-sampling “Rah Rah” has funeral overtones, while both the Lingo-produced “Cobra Clutch” and “It’s a Grind” show how he should be a more sought-out beatsmith as he’s versatile with both hi- and lo-fi sounds, sampling, and drum programming. The Snowgoons-produced “Hunting Grounds” is reminiscent of a Wu-Tang Clan track, but only in terms of how the track consists of nine rappers and a rewind-worthy “Winter Warz”-style of verse courtesy of Diabolic. As stated, “Goon Mode” isn’t the kind of album you’ll hear on the radio or the kind to put a listener in deep contemplative thought. In fact, the Snowgoons with Grind Mode Cypher would be too raw for what you’re used to hearing in those cyphers at B.E.T.’s Hip-Hop Award shows. But if seemingly bottomless bars delivered by skilled emcees rife with multis, wordplay, and charisma are what you crave, then “Goon Mode’ is for you.

Metallica Launches 2024 Tour: Photos, Video and Set List

Metallica kicked off their 2024 tour with an emphatic performance in Munich, Germany on May 24.

The concert officially launched the latest leg of Metallica’s M72 World tour. The trek, which began in April 2023, sees the metal giants playing two nights at each stop, with completely different set lists from one performance to the next.

In Munich, Metallica came out of the gates firing with “Whiplash,” the powerful lead single from their 1983 debut album Kill ‘em All (see a clip of the opening song in the tweet below). The band followed with one of their best-loved tunes, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” before delivering a rarity, “Of Wolf and Man.” The latter song, released on Metallica’s eponymous 1991 LP (known as the Black Album), hadn’t previously been performed during the M72 tour and was last played in 2021.

Other set highlights included classic tracks like “The Memory Remains,” Fade to Black,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “Master of Puppets.” The Munich gig also featured the live debut of “Room of Mirrors,” an album cut from Metallica’s 2023 album 72 Seasons .

When Will Metallica Be Back in America?

Metallica will continuing touring throughout Europe for the first part of summer, with stops in Spain, Denmark, France and Poland all on the schedule.

The group will return Stateside in August and begin a run of North American dates, beginning Aug. 2 with a stop in Foxborough, Massachusetts. From there, Metallica will wind its way across the U.S. and Canada, including stops in Chicago, Seattle and Edmonton. They are scheduled to wrap their 2024 touring with three shows in Mexico City at the end of September.

The 2023-’24 Ski Season By the Numbers

If the slopes felt less crowded to you this past winter, data just in from the National Ski Areas Association confirms that there were five million fewer skiers visiting U.S. ski resorts during the 2023-’24 season. Yet this past winter was still the fifth busiest since the NSAA started keeping track in 1978. The new numbers represent a 7.5 percent drop from the record high 65.4 million skier visits notched in last season— the busiest on record . The 2022-’23 winter will keep that title for the time being.

Acknowledging the overall inconsistency of the ski season for many U.S. ski resorts, NSAA president and CEO Kelly Pawlak said that the new numbers reflected skiers’ passion and resiliency even when weather and other factors didn’t cooperate.

“Skiers are a hardy bunch and responded enthusiastically,” said Pawlak in a press release. “The strong skier visits speak volumes to their passion for sliding on snow.”

Overall Analysis

The winter started off slowly, with warm weather and delayed openings across the country. And while it certainly picked up in many parts, the NSAA classified the 2023-’24 winter as a lower-snowfall year. The average snowfall across the nation was 158 inches, down from 225 during the stellar 2022-’23 season that saw Alta break its all-time snowfall record and Mammoth stay open into August . By the time the snow came in earnest—late March and all the way through April in the Rockies and parts of the Pacific Northwest—many skiers were already pivoting to spring endeavors. That said, the average season length ended up at a respectable 106 days this winter—only seven days less than last year.

What Constitutes a Skier Visit?

The NSAA uses the skier visit number to gauge the overall health of the country’s ski industry. A visit is recorded each time a person scans a season pass, lift ticket, or other lift product at a ski area. It’s worth noting that the NSAA’s numbers are preliminary, as there are still a handful of ski resorts open for the season , but the organization doesn’t expect the numbers to change significantly.

Skier Numbers by Region

Visitation was down across the country compared to the record 2022-’23 season. The NSAA breaks down the country into six regions; the most-visited was the Rocky Mountain region (Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and New Mexico), with 26.7 million visits. The Northeast had the second-highest numbers, at 12.4 million, followed by the Pacific Southwest at 8 million. The Midwest saw the largest year-over-year drop, with 4.8 million skier visits (an almost 28-percent decrease). The Pacific Northwest and the Southeast both rounded it out with 4.2 million visits each.

Visitors By Resort Size

The NSAA reported that while there are more smaller ski areas in the U.S. (measured by uphill capacity by the NSAA), the larger resorts collectively raked in higher numbers—and it wasn’t even close. To put it in perspective, 59 percent of the country’s ski resorts are classified as “small” by the NSAA’s calculations, but they only pulled in 13 percent of the skier numbers. The mega-resorts, or “extra-large” by NSAA standards, accounted for 57 percent of skier visits.

Season Passes vs. Lift Tickets

Given the high price of window rates, it’s not surprising that season pass holders comprise 50 percent of skier visits across the country. Lift tickets—either single or multi-day—clocked in at 31 percent. The NSAA explains that the gap in the numbers is caused by employee passes, complimentary passes, and frequency products such as grade-school passports and the like.

Resort Upgrades

While not a major factor in skier numbers, the NSAA also tracks capital investments and resort improvements from season to season. A total of $754.3 million was spent across U.S. resorts, with lift updates leading the way. That averages out to $29.20 per skier and is a fairly significant $4-plus increase from last season’s spend. The NSAA reports that there is already $500 million in the pipeline for capital improvements next season , including 71 new or upgraded lifts.
