Stabilité : SOUVENT STABLE, RARES AVALANCHES DE NEIGE HUMIDE.

It never takes long to get to Chamrousse. And when you get there, just one look at the valley and you forget the 3 1/2 hours by TGV (high-speed-train) from Paris, the hour´s drive from Lyon or Valence, the quick motorway trip from Chambery and even the few kilometers of one of the two roads out from Grenoble. You´ve only just got there and already you´re feeling carefree. The spendid Belledonne mountain range has lost nothing of its purity, and Chamrousse, a resort where nature reigns, will ensure you make the most of the activities it offers in its fabulous setting.

You will be charmed by skiing in the forest, on easy and accessible slopes: this is the perfect resort for children and beginners!

You will be able to ski freely thanks to the 4 consecutive hours ski pass, which allows you to start your half-day when you wish: ideal for those picking up skiing again."

Chamrousse | Ski Resort Review

From the Chamrousse piste map to the best ski schools, ski hire shops and legendary après ski bars, here’s your essential review of this popular family ski resort.

chamrousse ski resort france credit aeolus

A great choice for mixed ability groups and beginners, Chamrousse has a gilded history. As well as being the birthplace of French skiing, courtesy of Henri Duhamel, an alpinist from Grenoble, who made the first descent on skis here in 1878, it’s also where French ski legend Jean-Claude Killy made his name winning three gold medals at the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics.

Chamrousse is the closest ski resort to the city, a favourite with locals, and an excellent place to take the family for a ski holiday. There are two main lift bases offering sheltered slopes and ski-in ski out accommodation, but it's close enough to town that you could easily rent a car and drive up from Grenoble each day - a roughly 40 minute drive - should you wish to combine skiing in Chamrousse with a city break.

As well an dedicated beginners’ area, Chamrousse's proximity to Grenoble means it's become something of a favoured hangout for the city's sizeable snowboard and freestyle skiing population, and the Sunset Park has developed into one of the best for a small resort anywhere in the Alps.

There's also a Nordic Skiing Centre with 40km of tracks, and bags to do for the kids, with sledging areas and ventures such as dog sledding and teen snowmobiling.

Chamrousse - Ski Map & Pistes:

Chamrousse is a ski resort is of two halves: Beginners and intermediates will enjoy the many green and blue runs reached from the chairlifts at Chamrousse 1750, whilst the terrain above Chamrousse 1650, being steep and varied, offers more choice for better skiers. There are seven black and seven red runs here, and it's in this latter area that the famous men's downhill lies - at four kilometres, it's the longest run in the resort, and a must for wannabe Jean-Claude Killy's of any age.

chamrousse-ski-map

The resort is not hugely high - the top lift rises to just 2,250m above sea-level - so much of the 90km of piste is below the treeline. The wide, well-groomed pistes which sweep through the pines make Chamrousse an excellent place to come if the visibility is poor, and the trees help keep the slopes sheltered from winds that batter higher alpine terrain. It's great for intermediates, while novices should head to Bachat Bouloud, the special "beginner" area, with a sled run dedicated for children.

With its west to south westerly aspect, Chamrousse does get a lot of sun, which can mean that the skiing is icy in the morning and a bit slushy in the afternoons, particularly as the season progresses.

Things can get somewhat crowded at school holiday times and weekends because of its proximity to the city, but with 20 lifts providing an uplift capacity of 30,000 skiers per hour, the queues usually clear pretty quickly. At the top of the ski area, at Croix de Chamrousse, you get exceptional 360 ° views.

Chamrousse - Off-Piste, Backcountry & Ski Touring:

Given the lack of height or high alpine terrain, the off-piste here isn't world-class, but it's pretty good for a small ski area. There are a ton of fun features to pop off between the pistes, and the sheer number of tree runs makes it a great place to come when it's dumping.

When the weather's better, drop off the back of the top lift towards the Lacs Robert and you can get some decent powder turns if the snow's good. If you're prepared to stick your skins on and book a guide, there are some epic routes you can tour to from here. The local ESF runs off-piste skiing days or half-days.

Chamrousse - Restaurants, Bars & The Town:

Between the two villages there are 25 restaurants ranging in price and style, most of them serving variants of French cuisine although there are one or two pizzerias.

The nightlife is centred around the 25 bars and restaurants in the resort and is fairly low key. L'Embuscade Pub is one to check out, while the K-Dox pub at the foot of the slopes next to the Arselle chairlift is a popular spot for a post-slope drink.

Chamrousse - Ski Hire:

For ski hire in Chamrousse try Vernon Sports , Skimium and Last Run .

Chamrousse - Ski School:

For ski schools in Chamrousse, the obvious first choice is the local ESF ski school.

  • Why go skiing here

Practical Information

Overlooking the Winter Olympics host city of Grenoble, Chamrousse is surprisingly accessible.

The city is roughly the same distance beyond Lyon as Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc, so drive times from the UK are relatively comparable, all but the relatively gentle final climb to the resort being on fast autoroutes.

Transfers from budget flights into Genoble are similarly rapid, despite usually being routed via the busy city centre for a change of coach.

Skiers on upper piste, showing wide mountain views

  • Plenty of intermediate groomed cruising.
  • Ski the mythical men's downhill run from the 1968 Olympics.
  • Safe learner area and easy progression green pistes.

Ninety kilometres of groomed terrain might not look much on paper, but most of it is well-linked blue- or red-graded cruising. Blacks include the world-famous Men’s Downhill and the Couloir de Casserousse, with a vertical drop of 850m. At the other end of the scale there are gentle ski-school areas, and some worthwhile green runs for novices. Whatever your level, Chamrousse is a surprisingly nice place to be, with sensational views higher up overlooking Grenoble and across to the Plateau de Vercors, plus more sheltered tree-lined pistes above the villages. Just below them lie over 40 km of deservedly-popular ski-de-fond (cross country) terrain.

Ski the Casserousse descent - one of the 10 mythical descents in the French Alps (chosen by the magazine "Les Grands Ducs") upon which Jean-Claude Killy won his first Gold medal at the 1968 Winter Olympics.

The Ski Village

  • Purpose-built ski resort close to Grenoble.
  • An upbeat, family resort with downhill and cross-country skiing.

Chamrousse comprises three villages – 1650 (le Recoin), 1700 (Arselle) and 1750 (Roche Béranger). Chamrousse 1400 is a little-developed access point at the base of the Casserousse black-graded expert terrain, while the others have the accommodation, services and main lift access. Best-established are 1650 and 1750, which so far also have a better range of services than the more recently-developed 1700 Arselle area. The villages’ respective appearances reflect their respective origins from 1950s to the present day, but an attractive contemporary style has shaped more recent development, giving Chamrousse a unique identity. Don’t expect a traditional Alpine chalet feel; for all its history, this upbeat place is much more about right now and the future than the past.

  • Recent major lift system upgrades.
  • Southern feel to the surroundings.
  • Modest mileage (and it's not linked to anywhere), so not one for distance fiends.
  • Variable snow record for lower terrain – but there's highly effective snowmaking.
  • Stay in the newer accommodation for more comfort and convenience.

Les Villages du Bachat

Quartier Bacha Boulout 38410 Chamrousse

Apartments at the Résidence Domaine de l'Arselle, Chamrousse 1800

Formally known as the Résidence Domaine de l'Arselle, Les Villages du Bachat is a large development of 8 mini-villages with four or five 4 storey buildings in each, all cleverly sited amid the trees in Chamrousse 1700.

The apartments are contemporary in design , comfortable and spacious. Interiors are fresh and bright, with plenty of storage space. They all have a fully-equipped kitchenette and a balcony – some south-facing with a large terrace. We stayed in the uppermost buildings near Reception and enjoyed amazing panoramic views .

The area has its own shop, ski-hire, bars and restaurant. ' Le Bachat ' is a friendly and modern bar/restaurant (free WiFi) nearby and serves traditional meals, pizzas or a take-away menu for those who prefer to relax in their own apartments. We found it a great place to hang out with a beer, catch up on e-mails, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Access to the ski area is via the nearby Domaine de l'Arselle chairlift, beside a ski school meeting-point and small beginners slope. The village shuttle bus circulates regularly.
