In Kentucky, Shelby County is located just 30 minutes southeast of Louisville and about an hour northwest of Lexington. It's home to the town of Shelbyville, known as the American Saddlebred Capital of the World because of the more than 100 Saddlebred horse farms there. However, there's so much more to this picturesque county. It's a sweet respite from urban life, featuring lovely stretches of rolling countryside, antiquing, a thrilling foodie scene, the famous Bourbon Trail — and some of the best fried chicken in the country.

Here's a list of top things to do and where to stay to help you plan your visit.

Visit the Shelby County Historical Society Museum in Shelbyville

Main Street Shelbyville is home to many fun shops and cafes

Shelby County, Kentucky, which includes Shelbyville, Simpsonville and Shelby, is steeped in history from its genesis as a pioneer settlement.

This region played a notable role in the Civil War, as the county was a hub for Union forces. The Battle of Perryville, one of the largest battles in Kentucky, took shape just a few miles from the county border. Visit the Shelby County Historical Society Museum to learn about the area’s heritage, or simply stroll around downtown Shelbyville to take in the well-preserved 19th century buildings — from regal Victorian mansions to endearing bungalows.

Peruse antique shops and the Shelby County Farmers' Market

Pick up a mint julep cup featuring decorative hand-beading

Art, design and history enthusiasts will gush over a vast assortment of English antiques, fine art and collectibles, including furniture, paintings, sculpture, antique silver and glassware at the historic Wakefield-Scearce Galleries . Galleries are housed in a stately mid-19th century mansion, which was once a private girls’ boarding school. The international collection spans several centuries.

If you’re in town on a Wednesday or Saturday, stop by the Shelby County Farmers’ Market to shop for an array of local favorites. At this market, you can browse around for so many wonderful items, such as fruit and vegetables, farm fresh artisan breads, regional honey, authentic Southern sweets and locally roasted coffee. You'll also find an impressive variety of crafts for sale, created by neighborhood artisans, and plenty of live Bluegrass music.

Nearby, visit the lovely Little Mount Lavender that specializes in lavender-based goods made from over 1,000 fragrant plants on site. It's also a cute cafe, so you can take a break from shopping. Order a lavender old-fashioned cocktail and a charcuterie platter. Don't miss the dessert case for a fresh pastry.

Sip Kentucky Bourbon at Jeptha Creed in Shelbyville

The Jeptha Creed distillery celebrates the heritage of Kentucky and Scotland

According to the Kentucky Distillers' Association, the state crafts 95% of the world’s Bourbon. Many spirits experts agree that traditional, high-quality ingredients, like limestone-rich water, along with perfected techniques make it one of world's top distilled beverages.

If you're a fan of old fashioneds, be sure to sip a few here and see if you can distinguish distinct yet subtle flavors of pecan, honey, vanilla or oak. Visit Shelbyville’s Jeptha Creed , which is owned and operated by mother-daughter duo, Joyce and Autumn Nethery. The craft distillery uses special "Bloody Butcher" corn that's grown on the family farmlands. This type of corn lends a nutty sweetness to its product. Book a tasting at the farm’s barrel barns or a mixology class. Here, you can enjoy a sip of honey vodka, 4-Grain Bourbon and lemonade moonshine, among others.

Another popular stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is Bulleit Distilling Company, where you take a tour, or do a tasting and sample the bold and spicy character of rye, as well as 10-year-old and barrel-strength Bourbon.

There's no need for reservations for a tasting at Talon Winery where you savor some vintages while enjoying free live music on weekends. Additionally, coffee lovers will be impressed by the ShelbyKY Coffee Trail, comprised of four quirky coffee houses that use locally roasted beans. They brew and pour a multitude of delectable flavors, such as protein javas, honey lattes and blackberry lavender white mochas.

Experience Shelby County's foodie scene

Wear elastic the day you visit Claudia Sanders Dinner House

There are plenty of local specialties to devour on your visit, as this area is home to an incredible food scene. In addition to dynamite desserts, like coconut cream pie and praline cheesecake, The Bell House Restaurant , built in 1902, serves an impressive Kentucky Hot Brown. This classic Southern-baked comfort dish features smoked turkey, open-faced on toast, enveloped in Mornay sauce and then capped with smoked bacon and a tomato slice.

Head to Claudia Sanders Dinner House for platters of country cooking, including country ham and biscuits, bread pudding drenched in Kentucky Bourbon sauce, catfish dishes and chicken ‘n’ dumpling soup. Of course, you can also order delectable fried chicken, with mashed spuds and milk gravy on the side. Fun fact: Colonel Sanders (yes, the same Colonel Sanders of KFC fame) and his wife, Claudia, opened this restaurant in the 1960s.

The Bell House's Kentucky Hot Brown is a hearty choice

Locally owned McKinley’s Cafe is a good bet for overstuffed sandwiches, such as the pimento cheese or Kentucky Benedictine, two local specialties that are guaranteed to hit the spot.

A few doors down, Spotz Gelato serves small batch gelato and sorbet made with local ingredients. Go for Kentucky Bourbon gelato with pecans, Fluffernutter or apple crumble crunch, among many other refreshing and unique flavors.

A selection of handmade gelato on a hot Kentucky day

If you're seeking a super-casual option, B&N Food Market is a grocery store serving generous portions of smoked brisket, ribs, mac ‘n’ cheese and homemade desserts. Many gas stations in the South serve tasty, inexpensive regional food — some based on old family recipes.

Huck’s Gas Station in Simpsonville is certainly one where you can “fill ‘er up” on the petroleum product, as well as Huck’s World Famous Fried Chicken, a proprietary, hand-breaded recipe that's been exiting the fryer for more than 50 years!

Go horseback riding in Kentucky Bluegrass Country

Visitors can ride or just get to know Saddlebred horses

You needn’t be a Kentucky Derby jockey to sense the emotional connection between horses and humans. Since you’re in the heart of Bluegrass Country, be sure to make an equine experience a part of the vacation's activities.

With nearly 100 horse farms, Shelby offers guided trail rides, classes and a variety of scenic tours. It's an ideal opportunity to sense solace in the presence of these majestic and beautiful creatures. If you want to truly experience this area, take a horseback riding lesson or sign up for a trail ride at Shelby Trails Park and Red Fern Riding Center .

Get up close and pet beautiful and rare Icelandic horses at Léttleiki Icelandics at historic Swallowland Farm in the rolling hills. The word “Léttleiki” is “lightness” in Icelandic, suggesting the gentle sway and cues between horse and rider. See how West Meadow Farm connects people, horses and nature, while Kismet Farm offers riding lessons and farm tours.

Stay at an authentic working horse farm in Shelby County

Snuggle up at Cerulean Farm Bed and Breakfast and working horse farm

How many opportunities will you have to lodge at a combination guesthouse and horse farm? Consider a stay at the 1860 Cerulean Farm Bed and Breakfast homestead and working horse farm, with equine-themed rooms that afford views of the horses grazing in the serene countryside. Dig into a hot country breakfast, leave the cell phone in your room and take a tour to meet the horses.

If you prefer to stay in downtown Shelbyville, choose to snooze at the upscale Saddlebred Suites . The 1890s building has been finished out as modern, two-bedroom and studio lofts. It's located steps away from coffee shops, restaurants, antique stores and indie boutiques. Outside of town, visitors can rent a restored Victorian farmhouse, a cottage or a cabin along the Bourbon Trail — where you can take a deep breath, enjoy the scenic country vistas and listen to the world turn.

15 Best Things to Do in Shelbyville (KY)

In Kentuckyโ€™s Bluegrass Region and not far east of Louisville , Shelbyville is the kind of place where you can get in touch with Kentucky signatures like horse-breeding and bourbon.

This is truly horse country, and Shelbyville is known as the saddlebred capital of the world, with some 90 farms and breeding and training facilities.

Agritourism experiences abound, whether you’re tasting bourbon at the source, riding a trail or stopping by a quaint farm for U-Pick fruit.

Shelbyvilleโ€™s Main Street has a lot to love, with a dynamic events calendar, while for contrast the only premium outlet mall in the state is just a few miles west, off I-64.

1. Bulleit Distilling Co. Visitor Experience

Bulleit

At the high end of the mass-produced bourbon market and now owned by Diageo, Bulleit has been around since 1987, resurrecting a 19th-century brand. In 2017 Diageo opened a new $115-million distillery in Shelbyville.

This is set on 300 acres and has recently opened a visitor experience, if youโ€™re curious to see what a 21st-century distilling process looks like.

The facility is out in the countryside just east of Guist Creek Lake, with a Visitor Experience open Tuesday to Sunday. Guided tours begin by revealing the long history of the Bulleit name, and the forward-thinking minds that helped revive the brand.

This is a high-tech operation, and one of the most memorable stops on the tour is the control room where the entire process is coordinated.

At the end of the tour you can enjoy a multisensory tasting experience of the Bulleit portfolio, including Bulleit Bourbon, Bulleit Bourbon 10 Year Old and Bulleit Rye Whiskey.

2. The Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass

Shopping

Kentuckyโ€™s only outlet shopping center is off I-64, within a few minutes of downtown Shelbyville.

Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass opened in 2014 and like most malls of this kind is designed like a little town.

Among the 80+ stores and services are factory outlets for the likes of Adidas, Banana Republic, Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, Columbia, Gap, Le Creuset, Leviโ€™s, Michael Kors, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Under Armor and many more.

Expect savings of up to 60%, with constant promotions in specific stores, and additional discounts for teachers, military, healthcare workers and seniors.

3. Jeptha Creed Distillery

Jeptha Creed Distillery

This distillery was set up on a local family run farm, and recalls the days before prohibition when most farms had a still and made their own distinctive spirits.

Jeptha Creed Distillery has only been around for a few years, but is steeped in history, as the farm sits at the foot of Jeptha Knob, a prominent natural landmark named by Daniel Booneโ€™s brother, Squire (1744-1815).

Many of the ingredients for Jeptha Creedโ€™s range are grown on this land, including four acres of non-GMO โ€œBloody Butcherโ€ corn.

Thereโ€™s a bar and cafe at the distillery, and you can stop by for a free Spirit Tasting or in-depth Barrel Tasting experience, letting you sample Jeptha Creedโ€™s bourbon straight from the barrel.

4. Main Street Shelbyville

Main Street Shelbyville

Concentrated on a few blocks of Main Street, downtown Shelbyville is a pocket-sized commercial district that will reward a little exploration.

The main drag is two rows of dainty old storefronts with lots of interesting details, especially further up in the cornices and corbels.

West of the impressive Shelby County Fiscal Court, these are packed with inviting establishments like the popular Sixth & Main Coffeehouse and stores for antiques, home design, pet care and clothing.

Main Street has an events calendar to put most towns to shame, with something fun happening every month of the year, but especially in May when youโ€™ve got Main Street Week and the Art & Music Festival

5. Gallrein Farms

Gallrein Farms

This farm has been in the Gallrein family since 1929, and for two generations was devoted to dairy farming until it was diversified in the 70s and then opened to the public as a farm market in the 90s.

Gallrein Farms is multifaceted, and like all farms moves with the seasons. So in spring there are nine greenhouses for flowers, while in summer you could come for U-Pick strawberries or to buy veggies picked straight from the field.

Fall means all kinds of fun, with hayrides, a tractor train, corn maze, a pumpkin patch and many more family-friendly activities.

Spring through fall thereโ€™s also a petting zoo, which is one of the main attractions at the farm, with donkeys, cows, sheep, chickens, llamas and horses.

6. Shelby County History Museum

Shelby County History Museum

Another great reason to explore Main Street is for this well-presented local history museum.

The setting is the beautiful Presbyterian Manse building, constructed in an Italianate style in 1872. This houses the Shelby County Historical Society, with a museum open Monday to Friday.

When we wrote this list there was an enlightening exhibit about the historic local tobacco industry on the second floor, while downstairs you could delve into Shelbyโ€™s saddlebred trade with a display about the celebrated Crabtree Saddlebred Farm.

7. Shelbyville Fountain

Shelbyville Fountain

In a little plaza southeast of the Shelby County Fiscal Court thereโ€™s a beguiling monument that has been a fixture in Shelbyville since the 1890s.

Labeled with an historical marker, the Shelbyville Fountain depicts a reclining woman with a rampant mythological winged lion.

The neighboring marker explains that this figure is โ€˜โ€œAtlantisโ€ patternโ€™. The sculpture was cast by New Yorkโ€™s J. L. Mott Iron Works, which was founded in 1828, and produced everything from kettles and fire irons to statuary and water fountains.

The monument sits among cute landscaping with shrubs, a small lawn and four surrounding benches.

8. Mulberry Orchard

Corn Maze

Another place to go for quality local produce is this family-run farm that opens to the public in summer and fall.

At the time of writing, Mulberry Orchard had 16 types of apples, harvested June to October, and 17 varieties of peaches, available in July and August.

These are the main specialties but the farm also produces a wide selection of berries and vegetables throughout the season, as well as tempting fresh baked donuts.

For families, visiting Mulberry Orchard is a day out, with hayrides, a play area and friendly farm animals, as well as a pumpkin patch and corn maze in fall.

9. Shelby Trails Park & Red Fern Riding Center

Horseback Riding

Part of the Shelbyville-Shelby County parks system is this unique public space northwest of the town, designated for horseback riding.

These 462 acres are on former farmland, deeded to the parks and recreation department by horse enthusiasts Dr. Roger & Diane Shott of Anchorage, KY in 2010.

The park now has 21 groomed hiking and horseback riding trails, complemented by a 32-stall barn and indoor and outdoor arenas.

The Red Fern Riding Center is on hand, offering guided horseback rides for the public, as well as lessons, training and full-service boarding, while also hosting special seasonal events.

10. Lake Shelby Park

Fishing

In the northeast of Shelbyville youโ€™ll find Lake Shelby, which was built on Clear Creek in 1949. This served as Shelbyvilleโ€™s main water supply for around two decades before Guist Creek Lake was constructed, paving the way for Lake Shelby to become a spot for recreation.

On 20 acres, the lake is stocked with crappie, bluegill, catfish, bass and more, and is also perfect for paddlesports and birdwatching, with bald eagles commonly spotted in winter. Youโ€™ve also got 15 tent/primitive camping sites and 10 RV sites.

Just south of Lake Shelby Park is the 130-acre Clear Creek Park, featuring a 9-hole public golf course and numerous other recreation facilities, including the Family Activity Center (pool, basketball courts, fitness room, classes and more).

11. Kismet Farm

Saddlebred

In a place billed as the Saddlebred capital of the world, you have to take the opportunity to visit a horse farm and find out a little more about this industry.

One facility that welcomes guests for tours by appointment is Kismet Farm, embedded in 150 acres of gorgeous rolling scenery and bounded by the stunning Elkhorn Creek.

On a visit youโ€™ll see the main barn, paddocks, rambling biosphere fields, the picturesque wooded banks of Elkhorn Creek and the fine Main Residence, dating back some 200 years.

Kismet Farm offers a full-service show horse operation, and this includes riding lessons for all ages.

12. Talon Winery

Talon Winery

Founded near Lexington in 1999, this well-regarded Kentucky brand opened a second location just outside of Shelbyville in 2009.

Talon Winery is close to Jeptha Creed Distillery, just off I-64, and is open to the public for tastings seven days a week.

The tasting room is set upstairs, with vistas taking in an old limestone quarry. Thereโ€™s normally free live music on the porch on weekends, and youโ€™re free to bring a picnic if youโ€™d like to linger for a while.

A couple of noteworthy Talon wines are Afterglow (Catawba), a robust red, and Moondance (Pinot Gris), a fresh and fruity white.

13. Shelby County Farmersโ€™ Market

Farmers Market

If you want to pick up super-fresh seasonal produce, the Coots Barn at the county fairgrounds hosts a farmersโ€™ market on Saturdays, April through October.

This was launched in 2001, and has an informative website, introducing you to the vendors and explaining which fruits and vegetables are available when, starting with asparagus in spring and concluding with apples and pumpkins in fall.

Also available are free range eggs, jams, breads, pickles, plants, cut flowers and bulbs, along with handmade soaps and locally roasted coffee.

14. Red Orchard Park

Disc Golf

This public park by Clear Creek in the south of Shelbyville has a lot of history. The land was settled in the 1790s by Aquilla Whitaker, who planted the namesake orchard here.

At that time Whitaker Station was a vital refuge for early settlers, and eventually gave rise to Shelbyville. Red Orchard Park was donated to the Shelby County Parks Department by one Clarence Miller, whose family had owned the land since 1925.

You can come for an easy walk along the winding trails, or to make use of the disc golf course. Thereโ€™s also a dog park, exercise equipment, a playground and the fine Red Orchard Barn, which is rented out as an event venue.

15. Guist Creek Lake

Water Skiing

The largest body of water in Shelby County is less than ten minutes east of downtown, and is off the radar in an idyllic rural landscape.

This reservoir was built in the early 1960s and boasts 27 miles of picture perfect shoreline, with wildlife such as deer and wild turkeys often sighted near the water.

Open spring through fall, Guist Creek Lake is a hotspot for camping, water skiing and boating, with a full-service marina complete with a supply shop.

If youโ€™re here for some fishing, the lake is stocked with almost 8,000 channel catfish each year, and two Kentucky state fishing records have been broken right here, for bullhead catfish (5lb, 3oz) and white catfish (1lb, 9oz).

Shelby County gets $850,000 in state funds for tourism support

downtown shelbyville shelby county

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. โ€” Gov. Andy Beshear announced $857,905 in funding will benefit tourism in Shelby County, including the new Kentucky Black History Trail, a collaborative project between six Kentucky counties.

โ€œTodayโ€™s awards support our thriving tourism sector, an industry that fuels economic growth in both rural and urban communities in Kentucky. My administration recognizes how critically important it is to invest in tourism in every community, large or small,โ€ said Gov. Beshear. โ€œThese kinds of investments move our communities forward. As Governor, and especially as a dad, nothing is more important to me than building a better Kentucky for all our people.โ€

โ€œWe in Shelby County are very appreciative of this funding to boost our tourism industry,โ€ said Shelby County Judge/Executive Dan Ison. โ€œFrom wineries, distilleries, local eateries, horseback riding or fishing on Guist Creek Lake, we have a lot to share with Kentucky and the world. These funds will help us show everything Shelby County has to offer.โ€

Tourism Marketing Funding Beshear awarded $357,905 from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to the Shelby County Tourist Commission to support travel marketing and promotion and attract meetings and conventions.

โ€œWith the additional ARPA funding, ShelbyKY Tourism is able to market our Shelby County destination, as well as the new Shelbyville Conference Center, like never before,โ€ saidย Janette Marson, president of Shelby Tourism and Visitors Bureau. โ€œ Thanks to the legislators and Gov. Beshear, Shelby County is advertising nationally, which in turn, will bring additional economic impact to our county and the commonwealth.โ€

โ€œThese funds will help Shelbyville attract and welcome more guests to town,โ€ said Mayor Troy Ethington of Shelbyville. โ€œWe will use this funding to showcase all that makes our city unique, such as our beautiful Saddlebred horse farms, local distilleries and winery tours, amazing community parks and our historic Main Street.โ€

Kentucky Black History Trail The Governor also presented $500,000 to the Kentucky Black History Trail. This multijurisdictional project aims to build a trail that will highlight locations connected to Kentuckyโ€™s Black History. Rather than reading from a sign, visitors will have the opportunity to connect with these sites in unique ways, specifically, an augmented reality experience that will allow history to come to life using QR codes. The trail is a collaborative project between Shelby, Jefferson, Hardin, Bullitt, Oldham and Nelson counties.

โ€œThe development of this highly innovative Black History Trail is an incredible opportunity for us to tell more diverse stories about our destination and region,โ€ said Cleo Battle , president and CEO of Louisville Tourism . โ€œThe project speaks directly to the work we are doing to help our destination increase awareness surrounding Black travel and visitation as we strive to host a higher percentage of Black visitors annually.โ€

โ€œThe Black History Trail is a very important addition to Bullitt Countyโ€™s h

eritage and history. The technology that brings history alive right in front of you will spark future generationsโ€™ thirst for knowledge. It will hopefully comfort past generations who lived it,โ€ saidย Troy Beam, executive director of Shepherdsville-Bullitt County Tourism. โ€œBullitt Countyโ€™s history is not complete without our African American history, and this project will help us tell that history. The funding for this project is immeasurable for our counties; it gives an opportunity for us to tell stories that otherwise may not have been told and in a technology that will peak the interests of visitors of all ages.โ€

โ€œWe are very appreciative of Gov. Beshear and the Kentucky General Assembly for continuing to support the hospitality industry,โ€ said Janna Clark , executive director of Elizabethtown Tourism and Conventions. โ€œThis project is innovative and will provide a unique experience for those traveling in our region of Kentucky.โ€

โ€œOldham County is honored to be included in such a groundbreaking history project that will highlight the importance of African Americans in Oldham Countyโ€™s history,โ€ said Kim Hydes, executive director of Oldham KY Tourism and Conventions. โ€œWe are grateful to be part of a multijurisdictional project that was funded with ARPA funds, as it has given our county a unique opportunity to educate visitors about Kentuckyโ€™s rich history in a creative way that our budget would not allow for otherwise.โ€

โ€œThe Kentucky Black History Trail: Where the Stories Come Alive, is a unique experience. Visitors will be able to use their mobile device at more than 15 sites across the Louisville region and experience holograms of Kentucky historical figures, which will then literally bring that portion of Kentucky Black history to life,โ€ saidย Janette Marson. โ€œKentucky will have the only experience like this in the country. The idea is extremely timely and a unique way to reach African American travelers as well as all visitors interested in history. We are so very thankful to Governor Beshear for helping us get the funding for this very important project.โ€

The awards are part of the $75 million in ARPA funding announced by the Governor in July to boost the stateโ€™s tourism industry and economy following the decline in visitors brought on by the pandemic. The funds are distributed by the Kentucky Department of Tourism to eligible tourism organizations throughout the commonwealth.

PGA drives busy tee times at local courses

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Round three of the PGA Championship has come to a close, as golf fans wait to see who takes home the trophy. While those fans are here, many are making their way to play a few holes at Louisville courses, like Seneca Golf Course.

โ€œI know that itโ€™s really exciting to hear when people suggest us,โ€ said Ben Hartsell, a manager at Seneca Golf Course. โ€œYou know, people come in, and they say, โ€˜Hey Iโ€™m here in town visiting my aunt, or Iโ€™m here with my brother or here with my friends.โ€

Word of mouth and a few positive Google reviews are what steered Ohio natives Tammy and Ken Couch in Senecaโ€™s direction.

โ€œI was googling, of course, and I saw the amenities and how nice it is and I thought, this is the place to be,โ€ explained Couch.

The couple will attend their first PGA Championship on Sunday, but they made sure to get in a few hours of their own at the course, like they do every time they visit a new city.

The couple was among the dozens of visitors from all over the country teeing up at the local course during PGA week.

โ€œThereโ€™s definitely been an influx of people from out of town, you can tell,โ€ said Hartsell. โ€œEven leading up to this week, weโ€™ve got an uptick in calls people asking, โ€˜Can we make a tee time? Weโ€™re in town for the PGA.โ€™โ€

As one of Kentuckyโ€™s most popular courses, Seneca has its fair share of golfers on a normal week. But as visitors roll in, staff said the excitement around the tournament is the obvious driving factor.

โ€œItโ€™s been exciting, I tell you. You know, weโ€™re not there but itโ€™s exciting to talk about. Everybodyโ€™s watching it,โ€ said Hartsell.

The PGA expects half a billion people to watch the championship from home, while 200,000 walk the green at Valhalla . Among the thousands were Nate Lueckenhoff and his group of friends who traveled in from three states for the bucket list event.

โ€œYesterday was a blast. The golf course at Valhalla is incredible. It was a little rainy but it was a nice day overall. We had a great time,โ€ said Lueckenhoff, visiting from Missouri.

The same goes for Cincinnati fans like Tyler Roehr, who followed Scottie Scheffler on the course for a PGA experience he will not forget.

โ€œThe vibes were immaculate. We were there for his first tee shot. Everyone was loving Scottie. Heโ€™s a great guy. Hoping that everything gets sorted out legally. But it was really fun.โ€

Now with their day at the PGA out of the way, both groups will be spending the rest of their time at the local courses and taking in what the city has to offer.

The PGA is set to drive in $100 million to Louisville tourism before the weekend wraps up.

In 2022, the data set used for this study, Ohio winemakers produced about 1.2 million gallons of wine in a 12-month period and ranked seventh in the country for wine economic output.

What to do during Ohio Wine Month

Ohio tourism's list of 24 things to do for Ohio Wine Month has suggestions big and small, from traveling the state's seven wine trails to supporting your local winery, as well as setting up a wine and cheese night at home. Here's a look at some things to do:

Visit Ohio's five recognized regions for growing wine grapes

The term โ€œappellationโ€ on a wine label denotes the geographic origin of the grapes used to produce it, according to the Ohio Grape Industries Committee. To use the term on a label, 85% of that wine must be produced from grapes grown in that area.

In the United States, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau regulates viticulture (the study of grape cultivation for wine making) appellations. And Ohio has five of them , according to the committee. They include:

  • Lake Erie: Theย Lake Erie AVAย is an American Viticultural Area that includes 2,236,800 acres of land on the south shore of Lake Erie in Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania.
  • Isle St. George: Theย Isle St. George AVAย is located on North Bass Island in Lake Erie. Over half of the island is planted for grapevines.
  • Grand River Valley: Theย Grand River Valley AVAย includes portions of the Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties of northeastern Ohio.ย
  • Ohio River Valley: Wine has been produced in this AVA since 1823. It is the second-largest wine appellation of origin in the United States with 16,640,000 acres in portions of the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. It is second only to the Upper Mississippi Valley.
  • Loramie Creek: Theย Loramie Creek AVAย is bordered by Loramie and Tuttle Creeks as well as state Route 47 in Shelby County.ย

Explore Ohio's seven wine trails

The Ohio Wine Producers Association lists seven wine trails, each covering a certain region of the state. They are:

  • Appalachian Wine Trail : According to the wine producers group, the region's deep unglaciated soils create "very favorable microclimates to ripen grapes," which are then made into distinctive wines in the tradition of the artists who made the pottery, glasswork, basketry and furniture "for which the foothills of eastern Ohio continue to be known."
  • Canal Country Wine Trail : Dotted throughout the region opened to settlement by the Ohio and Erie Canal are some of the state's "most charming" wineries, according to the wine producers. "Remnants of the Canal are preserved in an area rich in history, beautiful scenery, unique cultures, natural resources and leisure activity options."
  • Capital City Wine Trail : With each winery located a short drive from Columbus, the wine producers association says it is possible to visit two or three in a day and explore the unique communities that surround them.
  • Ohio River Valley Wine Trail : This trail celebrates Ohio wines' rise to prominence, not once but twice. In the 1800s, Nicholas Longworth planted vines imported from Europe on hundreds of acres overlooking the Ohio River, and discovered a native variety that produced an excellent sparkling wine. By the mid-1800s, his wines were celebrated across the country and Europe, but vine disease and the Civil War ended his run. In the 1970s, the region made a comeback with the support of research from Ohio State University.
  • Lake Erie Shores & Islands Wine Trail : Throughout this 'cool climate' growing district, historic vineyards and wine families who have farmed them for generations are complemented by new plantings of Rieslings and chardonnays established by entrepreneurs. Numerous soil types, deposited by years of glacial movements, provide fertile ground for great viticulture, new and old.
  • Vines & Wines Wine Trail : Along the south shore of Lake Erie, through the valley created by the Grand River, this tiny parcel of land in Northeast Ohio is home to well over half of the wine grape acreage in the state. It boasts more wineries per square mile than in any other region.
  • V.I.N.O. Wine Trail : The "Vintners in Northwest Ohio" represents an eclectic group of family wineries. They are just a short drive from Toledo and neighboring communities in Michigan and Indiana.

Visit a wine festival

The Vintage Ohio Wine Festival in Kirtland on Aug. 2 and 3 bills itself as the "premier food and wine event of the year." It offers a wide selection of Ohio wines, as well as entertainment, artisans and shopping.

But it is far from the only festival happening around the state. Others include the Island Wine Festival in June and the V.I.N.O Wine Festival in October. For a full list, visit the Ohio Wine Producers Association events page .

Sample a new Ohio wine, or attend a tasting at a new winery

Expand your horizons by sampling a new wine, or your favorite style from a new winery in Ohio.

For past Ohio Wine Months, Ohio Magazine has offered a selection of new wines to try, including 7 Ohio wineries to visit in 2023 and 6 Ohio wines to try in 2022 .

Try an award-winning wine

The Ohio Grape Industries Committee has a long list of Ohio wineries that took home medals from the 2024 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, which it calls "the most prestigious in North America." More than 50 judges, representing various North American wine regions, evaluated over 5,500 wines from nearly 1,000 wineries for the competition.

The 2023 Ohio Wine Competition, held in May, was the largest one yet with 432 entries, the group says. Hanover Winery's Marquette won Overall Best of Show and Best of Ohio. For the full list of winners, click here .

Find an Ohio winery near you

The state has 320 wineries and 21 grape juice, jam, and jelly producers, according to the Ohio tourism association. If you're looking for one near you, the Ohio Grape Industries Committee offers a search engine by address or ZIP code.
