Album review: Set It Off – Elsewhere

Florida pop-rock trio Set It Off throw everything at the wall on fifth album Elsewhere, and find a good amount of it sticks…

Album review: Set It Off – Elsewhere

When Set It Off first started, they were known for expertly combining pop-punk with dramatic orchestral bits, especially on their aptly-titled debut album Cinematics. Over the years, they’ve dialled down those leanings in favour of more pop elements, but Elsewhere sees them dipping back into those classical influences, blending them with the brighter sound they’ve since developed. Take songs like Cordial and Taste of the Good Life, or the sinister Peekaboo, tapping farther into the album's theatrics.

But that’s not to say it’s just a rehash of older material. This fifth album sees the band experimenting even more and wearing their varied influences on their sleeves, whether it’s R&B, hip-hop or 2000s pop. Nothing’s off the table: strings, horns, whistles – it’s all there. There are plenty of hits, including As Good As It Gets, Why Do I and the guitar solos across the album, but there are a few misses as well across these 16 songs, like Playing With Bad Luck and piano ballad Better Than This. Set It Off do a really great job of building things up through compelling hooks, but some, like Dangerous, ultimately lead to underwhelming choruses.

Set It Off have never been afraid of being over-the-top, down to frontman Cody Carson playing up the emotions in his vocal delivery. In fact, it was probably their willingness to commit to the extreme that made them stand out in the first place. Unfortunately, that approach doesn’t serve them well when it comes to the lyrics, which at times border on the ridiculous (take, for example, Projector: ' eat me up like Hannibal Lecter' ). When it all hits, however, it does make Elsewhere a blast to listen to. From the big, catchy choruses begging for sing-alongs to the chilling, swelling strings, Elsewhere is proof that pushing the limits can produce exciting results.

Verdict: 3/5

Set It Off - Elsewhere

Album artwork for "Elsewhere," the brand new album from pop-punk/pop-rock band Set It Off..

Release Date: March 11, 2022

Genre: Pop, Pop Rock, Pop Punk Label: Fearless Records

The Los Angeles-based pop-punk/pop-rock trio Set It Off has once again upped the ante of their songwriting and musical abilities with their latest and fifth bulky sixteen-track offering, Elsewhere . Set It Off -who is made up of vocalist and lyricist Cody Carson, guitarist Zach DeWall, and drummer Maxx Danziger- have taken the sound you may have grown to love. By taking elements from their past and combining them with some new elements, the band has either slightly or never has dabbled in, tossed it all into a musical blender, and spun out what is a confident stride into the future for the band. Elsewhere is a collectively produced album from producers Bruce Wiegner (Scotty Sire, Gabbie Hanna, Katy Perry), Mike Green (Pierce the Veil, 5 Seconds of Summer, Neck Deep), and Nico Stadi (Justin Bieber, Lindsey Stirling, Jason Derulo). In addition to co-producing the album, Green provided additional bass guitars, and Stadi provided some keyboards to Elsewhere .

Set It Off's fifth album is a colossal record on many levels, and the biggest one that needs to be mentioned before anything else is that Elsewhere is a semi-concept album. A first for the band, the songs were written "backwards." Instead of writing an album about the concept the band wanted to achieve, they wrote the songs and placed them in a certain order to craft a story out of the collective topics the songs ended up being written about. This method from Set It Off was put into motion so the songs can be enjoyed separately, but if listened to from beginning to end, they tell a much bigger story. And while the core of the story within Elsewhere is based around the trio's insecurities, the band will further elaborate on the album's full concept within all their music videos, etc., in due time. With the pandemic lockdowns, the writing of Elsewhere was a cathartic release for vocalist Cody Carson to express into words in some form. On top of the album's numerous co-producers, the band had a few different collaborators come on board the writing sessions of Elsewhere and helped bring these songs to life in one way or another. One of the collaborators, in particular, was Tyler Glenn, the frontman of the rock act Neon Trees. Glenn is also one of Carson's dream collaborators, and his dream finally came true as they co-wrote the album's third track, "Cut Off," together. TWIN XL singer Cameron Walker, Bruce Wiegner (who also co-produced Elsewhere ), and Brandon Paddock all re-enlisted to write some tunes with Set It Off. Paddock specifically has been co-writing tunes with Carson since the band's 2014 album, Duality . Between Cody and the other writers included, before recording the album, Set It Off had written around forty songs completed to pick from.

Elsewhere opens up with the instantly infectious tune, "Skeleton." The opening number is very pop-leaning -and is not something new to Set It Off in any stretch. However, the song features a hip-hop-style bridge. Something only really tackled once or twice from the band in the past and last done on a few albums ago now. It's something that is incorporated quite a bit into the album. "Projector" takes the band into even more familiar territory with fast-paced sung lyrics coupled with an irresistible chorus. Again, Carson raps on "Projector." The dancey third track, "Cut Off," is the poppiest track on the album yet. Backed by a bold bass-line, its message is clear with its repetitiveness, but less is more with "Cut Off." Let the music speak on this one. "Loose Cannon" is one of Elsewhere 's most genre-bending numbers and features extraordinary performances from all three members of the band. Sadly, it's one of the shortest tracks on the album, but behind its pop-rock foundation, Carson is a tour de force, while DeWall and Danziger deliver breathy, haunting backing vocals that leave this track standing out among the rest after many, many listens. You can't forget that deep, groovy bass line that burrows within you.

"As Good As It Gets" sees Carson bare a lot into the song's lyrics, and the song's tone captures it before the track explodes into something villainous in ways. If you ever wanted to find out what The 1975 would sound like if they dabbled around in a much more poppy direction than they ever have, this is the perfect track for you. Somehow as the album continues, the band manages to deliver even more infectious choruses than the previous tracks. "Who's In Control" tackles the subject of the band and the industry's artistic freedoms. It speaks the old age question of who is truly in control when a band or artist becomes more than just a hobby and fun and transfers into more so a job with contracts and all that fun jazz.

"Why Not Me" at the lyrical level is about self-doubt from Carson, who sees all his friends finding success, but he isn't. However, at a musical level, "Why Not Me" is massive. It's slow, methodical then it's got these bigger faster parts and just an absolute banger. The additional stringed instruments bring this song to new heights, and the song becomes something off of a movie soundtrack. This song feels like it should be playing as a big action film ends. Elsewhere 's shortest track, "Dangerous," is the most infectious track from start to finish. Overall, "Dangerous" is another fast-paced pop-rock banger with hip-hop elements, but the chorus is where all the attention should be focused. The band used an acapella bass line that's absolutely new and unique for the band. I've only heard something similar to this acapella portion of the song from the Canadian pop-rock outfit Marianas Trench. Nearing the end of Elsewhere , "Playing With Bad Luck" holds strong onto the pop side of Set It Off but really digs into the band's roots the most than any other song on the record. "Peekaboo," as well, dives into their rock side. Overall, "Peekaboo" shines a very haunting tone, which is very difficult to find the right words to describe it in much detail. Elsewhere closes out with the piano-driven ballad, "Better Than This." It takes Set It Off on one more ride into the new. "Better Than This" was inspired by Carson's family and friends who have been asking for him to strip things back, even if it's just for one track. So Carson delivered, and he bares his heart and soul into this delightful and emotional album-closing number. It's a fresh and new change to close out this eclectic sixteen-track album. You never know what you're going to get with each Set It Off, and Elsewhere affirms this fact about the band. Elsewhere is a hefty sixteen-track album full of tunes that none of which sound like each other. It's a collection of eclectic bangers blending various genres ranging from pop-rock, hip-hop, pop-punk, and pop. Set It Off continue to prove they have plenty left in the tank, and they're here to stay. You can still pre-order and pre-save the album, and the band just wrapped up a tour, but they're currently scheduled to get out on the road in April and are sure to have more tour dates across the globe to support Elsewhere very soon.

Since forming in Florida in 2008, the genre-blending Set It Off have released four albums, amassed a loyal following, and relocated to L.A., while their Top 10 Spotify tracks alone have racked up 528 million plays.

The band's full-length debut album Cinematics in 2012 embraced their moodier rock side, while later efforts took on an upbeat pop twist that culminated in a darker synergy of those styles on 2019's Midnight. 2022's Elsewhere is a transitional, moody, and forward-thinking release - one in which they have faced their demons and come out happier and more full of life than ever before.

Taylor Swift review: Pop's heartbreak princess dazzles in Edinburgh

Taylor Swift in Edinburgh

Taylor Swift took to the stage at 7:15pm and played for almost three-and-a-half hours

  • Published 8 June 2024

After more than a year of anticipation, Taylor Swift’s blockbuster Eras tour has finally landed in the UK.

Pop’s heartbreak princess launched the first of 17 British concerts at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium where, shortly before taking to the stage, she was wheeled into the arena hidden inside a janitor’s cart.

Appropriately enough, then, she cleaned the floor with her competition - putting on a meticulously-paced, endlessly entertaining show that delighted fans who’d come from as far afield as Australia, Japan and America.

For three and a half hours, the star chronicled her journeys through country and pop; love and tragedy; success and notoriety - all in the form of era-defining hits like 22, Shake It Off, Bad Blood, Karma and Anti-Hero.

Not only that, she made it her mission to make Scotland feel special.

“My one regret is that I really should have come to play in Scotland more,” she said near the beginning of what was only her second-ever gig in the country.

“You’ve made us feel so welcome. The volume of the singing, the dancing… You are performing on such a level.

“I can’t stop looking at the crowd. I’m captivated.”

Taylor Swift in Edinburgh

The star went through 16 costume changes over the course of the show

This, more than anything, is Swift’s superpower – peddling the idea that she’s one of us, awed by the spectacle of which she’s the focus.

When she emerges on stage, her first words are, “Oh, hi!”, like we’d just bumped into her at the top of Arthur’s Seat.

And her signature look is an open-mouthed “who, me ?” – as if to suggest this $2bn world tour is some sort of happy accident.

Apparently unfeigned, her delight is very endearing. But, of course, this tour is a well-oiled machine, full of vivid set pieces, pin-sharp choreography and visual grandeur.

Swift emerges in a billow of white smoke shortly after 7:15pm to the synth-pop strains of Miss Americana And The Heartbreak Prince, twirling around the stage in the first of 16 distinct outfits.

The setlist is drawn from 10 of her 11 albums, each one designated as a specific “era” in her evolution from country ingénue to chart-topping pop star to lockdown folk singer.

Taylor Swift in Edinburgh, hugging a fan in the front row

One young fan received a hug - and a hat - from the US superstar

She zigs and zags through the chronology with giddy abandon, opening with the unabashed romanticism of 2019’s Lover, before delving into her back catalogue for the country hits of Fearless and her pop transformation on Red.

Every moment gets its own look. The Man, a song about restrictive gender stereotypes, is performed inside an elaborate set of office cubicles and typewriters. The spiky and sarcastic Look What You Made Me Do sees dancers trapped in glass boxes, each imitating a different look from Swift’s 19-year career. And Blank Space is like a live action Tron, with neon bicycles circling the stage.

But for her masterpiece, All Too Well, Swift stands alone on a raised platform for 10 minutes, armed only with her guitar and a red-black ombre coat.

Taken from 2012’s Red Album, the song is a 10-minute evisceration of an ex-boyfriend (believed to be actor Jake Gyllenhaal) that contains some of her most scathing and desolate lyrics.

She sings it with faded anger and bittersweet tenderness, the crowd joining sympathetically on the pivotal line: “ You call me up again just to break me like a promise / So casually cruel in the name of being honest .”

The song is an emotional highlight, simultaneously specific and universal, a characteristic that's endeared her to female fans in particular.

It's one of several songs in Edinburgh that elicits tears from the audience.

But only one prompts a proposal.

As Swift sings Cardigan, she spots something happening to the left of the stage.

“I’m pretty sure I just saw someone get engaged!” she announces in delight.

“I normally never get to see that because it’s dark [on stage] but it’s not right now, so congratulations!”

“Man, that’s amazing. Thanks for doing that at my concert. It’s a big moment.”

Surprise songs

The show is studded with little moments like this.

During 22, Swift chooses a young fan from the audience and presents her with the hat she's been wearing.

On We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, she hands the mic to a backing dancer who emphasises her answer with a cheeky Scottish “ nae chance ”.

And while introducing the song Betty, Swift claims the Scottish highlands inspired her lockdown companion albums, Folklore and Evermore.

“There was so much TV, so much white wine, [I was] covered in cat hair,” she explained.

“That was my reality. So I thought, ‘I’m going to create an imaginary world and escape into it’. This foresty, mossy, beautiful, natural world which I now realise is probably just based on videos I’ve seen online of Scotland.”

Needless to say, this gets one of the biggest cheers of the night… and her comments are instantly picked up by Scotland’s national newspapers.

Taylor Swift's tour in numbers

Swift is a master at this. Even as she approaches the 100th show of this mammoth tour, she is still creating new moments to keep the conversation circulating.

Even fans who tune into livestreams of every concert are given something fresh to discuss, as the singer constantly updates her outfits and switches up her setlist.

Key to this is the much-anticipated acoustic set, which comes towards the end of every show, and features two or more "exclusive" tracks.

For Scotland, Swift crammed in four songs: A mash-up of Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve and I Know Places; and a medley of ‘Tis The Damn Season and Daylight.

Swifties give their verdict on first UK Eras show

The set is interrupted twice, however. At first, Swift pauses so a fan can receive medical attention. Then, midway through I Know Places, she appears to need a medic herself.

“Oh God! Hand cramp!” she cringes.

“I have done a million shows on this tour and my hand has never decided to just like… It’s forming a claw!”

But after massaging her palm for a few seconds she is, thankfully, able to resume.

It’s a tiny stumble, but one that focuses fans’ attention – a commodity that ebbs and flows throughout the concert.

There’s a definite lull during the downbeat new material from The Tortured Poets Department, and the atmosphere is more attentive than excited during the Folklore / Evermore era.

Everything we know about Taylor Swift's songwriting

But the show is structured in such a way that you’re never far from a hearty singalong (best bit: Everyone chaotically trying to hit the high notes I Knew You Were Trouble) and the Eras conceit allows fans who’ve joined at different stages of Swift’s career to each have their moment.

The jumbled chronology evades anything as simple as a narrative arc – but by presenting 20 years of diary deriven hits, Swift is making a sweeping statement about young adulthood.

Her songs contain everything: Growing pains, political awakenings, strained friendships, broken hearts, self-realisation, self-reliance, re-invention and, ultimately, survival.

She ends with Karma - a weird and funny entry in her catalogue.

It’s an ode to former enemies, whose downfall she watches with a cat purring on her lap, like some sort of pop star Bond villain.

But the song also has a valedictory air that makes it an apt concert closer. Success, Swift sings, is just reward for her determination and perseverance, no matter what life throws at her.

“ Ask me what I learned from all those years / Ask me what I earned from all those tears.

“ Ask me why so many fade, but I'm still here / I'm still here, I'm still here. ”

The question, then, is where she goes next?

Taylor Swift is an artist at the peak of her imperial phase. There are few ways to top a world tour that's demolished box office records and become a cultural phenomenon .

Some lyrics on her latest album hint she’s ready for a new challenge - but, for now, she can still make the whole stage shimmer.

Dua Lipa kicks off Radical Optimism tour – but everyone is confused by the setlist

P op superstar Dua Lipa has kicked off her Radical Optimism Tour just a few weeks ahead of her Glastonbury Festival headline slot, but fans are confused by the setlist.

One month after the release of her chart-topping third studio album Radical Optimism , the pop star, actress, and holiday advocate is back on the road again, with her latest tour beginning in Berlin, Germany last night (5 June).

While Lipa launched her set with a fiery performance of Radical Optimism single “Training Season”, flanked by a handful of beefy backing dancers, the track is just one of a few from the album to actually make the setlist .

Across 17 songs in the show, the 28-year-old Barbie star performs just five tracks from her latest album, including lead single “Houdini” and latest single “Illusion”.

It’s her second album, the Grammy and Brit award-winning Future Nostalgia , that gets most of the air time, with the LGBTQ+ ally singing seven of the record’s 11 tracks.

Though Future Nostalgia received higher critical praise than Radical Optimism , fans are a little perplexed by Lipa’s setlist choices, given the name of the tour.

Specifically, fans are demanding the singer add Radical Optimism tracks “French Exit”, “Watcha Doing” and “End Of An Era” to the setlist with immediate effect.

“How is your tour called Radical Optimism and you perform five songs out of it,” one fan demanded, alongside a weeping emoji.

“Dua I’m so confused,” a second fan wrote. “Is this the Future Nostalgia tour with some Radical Optimism highlights??? Where is ‘Dance The Night’, ‘End Of An Era’, ‘Falling Forever’, ‘French Exit’??? Like what are we doing here girl?”

A third added: “Is the Radical Optimism Tour in the room with us…? Why are the best songs on the album not on the setlist??? ‘End Of An Era’ & ‘Watcha Doing’ I’m SO sorry.”

What’s the setlist for Dua Lipa’s 2024 Radical Optimism Tour ?

Dua Lipa kicked off her Radical Optimism Tour on 5 June, performing songs from Radical Optimism , Future Nostalgia , and her self-titled debut album, Dua Lipa .

The tour features 17 songs, including her number one hits “One Kiss” and “Cold Heart” with Elton John.
