Can’t upload documents on Safari or Chrome for Mac
I’m having trouble uploading documents onto any internet browser on my Mac. I tried to trouble shoot (reading back that this was a problem in nov 2020) but I can’t even check off boxes in my preferences menu, for safari, chrome, or my Mac system preferences. Drag and drop doesn’t work for me either…beyond frustrated. For reference I am running Big Sur 11.4

- downloaded files take a while to appear on desktop for uploading Ever since upgrading to big sur, when I download a file from an ftp site to my desktop, and then go to a website to upload the file, it takes about 30 to 50 seconds for the file to appear in the window (showing my desktop where the files exist) where I am supposed to select the file for upload. Prior to big sur, my files could instantaneously be seen and selected when downloaded to my desktop. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? It's a tremendous waste of time since I do a lot of uploading in my job. Thanks! 357 7

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
Safe Mode - About .
If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply. Pastebin

Can’t upload files in Safari? Update to Safari 14.0.3 (or drag and drop)
![safari file upload safari 14 mac icon big sur](https://www.macworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/safari-14-mac-icon-big-sur-100865712-orig-1.jpg?quality=50&strip=all&w=1024)
Wth the release of Safari 14.0.1 for macOS last November, Apple introduced a bug that prevented the use of the “upload files” option on web pages. The problem persisted until February 1, 2021, when the company released the 14.0.3 update for all supported macOS releases. If you’ve had this problem, simply update Safari to make it go away.
![safari file upload mac911 drag file onto button](https://images.idgesg.net/images/article/2021/02/mac911-drag-file-onto-button-100875846-medium.jpg?auto=webp&quality=85,70)
Drag a file onto an upload button, and it inverts; release, and the file name or list should be shown.
If for some reason, you can’t shift to Safari 14.0.3 from 14.0.1 or 14.0.2, there’s a workaround: simply drag a file or files onto the upload button. The upload buttons lights up when the cursor lands on top of them. Some sites are designed to allow drag-and-drop, and may show other animation or a confirmation as to the target. But even sites that use a simple HTML button with no special JavaScript coding can still accept files through this drag-and-drop method.
This can also be useful even with the latest Safari if you’d prefer to drag and drop items instead of using the Open dialog navigation method.

[Update: Jan. 13] Safari 14.0.1 does not let users upload files to sites on macOS Mohave, workarounds found
![safari file upload Zohaib Ahmed](https://piunikaweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2bdb5ce39634659250a2af77ba3b1231-27x27.jpeg)
New updates are being added at the bottom of this story……
Original story (published on December 5, 2020) follows:
Apple’s Safari browser appears to have broken the files upload functionality for macOS Mohave users after the 14.0.1 version update. And a result, plenty of users have taken to various forums complaining about the issue.
Some of such reports have been given below.
![safari file upload safari upload files mohave](https://piunikaweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/safari-upload-files-mohave.png)
My attach a file button doesn’t work with Safari. How do I notify google? AppleCare couldn’t help. Source
Suddenly, dropbox.com isn’t allowing me to upload a file if I’m using Safari as my browser. It works fine using Chrome. Any ideas what’s going on? Source
As apparent from the above complaints, the dialog that allows users to pick a file does nothing on Safari. Also, this is only being faced by users on macOS Mohave soon after the Safari 14.0.1 update.
There are no reports to indicate that the issue is present on other macOS versions, and hence, it does seem to be due to compatibility issues between the browser and the now aged operating system.
Moreover, the problem isn’t just limited to a single site as initially thought, as users have reported that they face the issue on all kinds of sites.
Switching over to another browser like Chrome or Firefox does make the bug disappear, which reiterates that it is indeed from Safari’s side.
![safari file upload safari promo](https://piunikaweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/safari-promo.png)
If you are one of the users facing this issue, then you have come to the right place as we got a series of workarounds for you to try.
Workarounds for when you are unable to upload files to Safari on Mohave
1. Drag files: A couple of users reported that they were able to upload their files to the sites by dragging files onto the browser window/attachment pane. Most sites support this functionality, and so you are good to give this a go.
2. Use another browser: This is probably the best way to work around the problem till Apple actually acknowledges the bug. The issue exists on Safari alone and hence, changing the browser temporarily will surely help. To download Firefox, click here . For Opera, click here . And for Chrome, click here .
3. Restore macOS Mohave: While many users have actually performed this to success, it is not advisable as this method is quite cumbersome.
Confirmed: re-installing Mojave’s last version (10.14.6) puts you back to Safari 12.1.2. I can’t think of any mind blowing updates to Safari in 13 or 14 so I didn’t bother updating the browser – someone care to refresh my memory on what I might be missing out on? Everything that I noticed was broken before with Safari 14.0.1 was now functioning again with JUST the restore of Mojave Source
Since it is not possible to rollback to a previous version of Safari, the only way to do so is by performing a re-install of macOS. This will revert your Safari to an older version that did not have any issues as such.
Follow the steps mentioned in this official Apple support article here to perform a restore.
4. Update macOS: Since the bug is only present on macOS Mohave, you can try updating to macOS Catalina or Big Sur to make it disappear, if possible. To do so, click Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update.
Hopefully, the above temporary fixes helped. You can also try sending feedback to Apple regarding this bug through this link .
Update 1 (December 21)
Quite disappointingly, the latest version of Safari, namely version 14.0.2, has not addressed the issue as per more recent complaints.
There is a new Security Update 007 out plus Safari 14.0.2 update. Neither solves this issue. Source
14.0.2 did not fix the problem.. still cannot use the upload button.. this is ridiculous!!! come on apple get with the program!! Source
For reference, the previous version 14.0.1 was released on November 12, while the latest one was rolled out on December 14.
New reports ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ) now have it that a similar issue is now afflicting users of Google Chrome on the new macOS 12 Monterey.
Update 3 (January 13, 2021)
For those still having this issue, here’s another workaround to try, suggested by one of the affected users.
i was having the same issue (m1 mac) and think i found a fix. i went to system preferences > security & privacy > privacy > files and folders, clicked the lock, selected chrome (which already had Downloads Folder permissions), removed it (click the – button), and restarted chrome. then i was getting proper finder pop-ups for file uploads (and downloads were still working too). Dropbox cloud storage is a great place to help teams get organized and add files to one central location. It’s easy for team members to see where everything is, and which files are the most recent—and in need of immediate attention.
- Shared folders: Working on a file-heavy project with several team members? Shared folders give everyone rich workspaces where they can get coordinated by uploading content, sharing files, adding folder descriptions, and assigning to-dos. And any edits you make within the folder will be immediately synced to other members, for quick and easy collaboration in real-time.
- Groups: With Dropbox, you can easily upload files and share materials with relevant parties by creating a group, adding a list of members, and inviting the group to shared folders.

- Manage folder permissions: Ensure secure folder sharing with multiple folder permissions. Choose if you want to give recipients editing or view-only access to your folder and manage your sharing options.
- Sharing options and controls: Sending a file as an email attachment can put your data’s security at risk. With Dropbox, you can easily share a link to a file or folder that is limited to view-only access. Plus, you can add password protection to a shared link, set a link expiration date and disable downloads.
- Granular folder permissions: Share a specific subfolder without giving access to the entire folder it lives within. Give your vendors access to just one “Final Images” subfolder, for example, located inside your larger “Graphic Design” folder.

10. As many of know, Safari mobile now allows file uploads through camera or image library. The 'problem' is that when the picture is taken from the camera, it is sent as it is, meaning it is very heavy in memory (I think it's around 2 or 3 mb even on iPhone 4). This makes the upload really slow and also bandwidth consuming (not good for mobile).

The 'Choose file' menu is not a default uploader and uses some kind of Java uploader or other magic. If so, that it that I guess. The settings in Safari are 'corrupted'. Just remove and add the iCloud folders in your sidebar and I expect that the Safari 'Open file' window will mimic the Finder.
The maximum size for decoded GIF, PNG, and TIFF images is 3 megapixels for devices with less than 256 MB RAM and 5 megapixels for devices with greater or equal than 256 MB RAM. I'm trying to add attachment upload for my typo3 extension, and since the normal file-input doesn't work with the design. I decided to add a text-input, to display the value, and a button-input, to fire up the file-inputs click event.
Found out that using addEventListener is indeed required. Adding it to the body alone is not sufficient. For whatever reason iOS Safari does not fire .onchange for photos taken directly with the camera (i.e., using the take photo option). It does, strangely, fire .onchange for photos taken from the photo library, which made me not realize the take photo option was failing for a while.
