Foo Fighters is a five-person alternative rock band fathered by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, established in Seattle, Washington in 1994.

Members Dave Grohl, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel, and Taylor Hawkins have been bringing their brand of hard rock to the world since the release of their debut album Foo Fighters in 1995. A long list of EPs, studio albums, and world tours later, the band is still picking up fans from all across the globe.

The start of Foo Fighters was not, as many bands are, a meeting of minds — rather, it was the blossoming of a single mind. Lead singer and guitarist Dave Grohl had famously joined Nirvana in 1990 as a drummer, but frequently took his guitar along on tours to write songs. Too shy to share them with bandmates Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, he instead recorded his own material in private. In 1992 he released an album of demos called Pocketwatch.

When Cobain passed away in 1994, Grohl faced a crossroads: He could accept the numerous offers to play drums for acts like Pearl Jam and Tom Petty, or he could go his own route. He chose the latter, saying: “I would rather do what no one expected me to do.”

In October 1994, Grohl entered Robert Lang Studios in Shoreline, WA and recorded 15 of his original songs. Astoundingly, Grohl sang every vocal and played every single instrument on the album with the exception of a single guitar part on “X-Static”, which the Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli contributed. The whole process took five days. Grohl released the album as Foo Fighters, a name he later said is the “stupidest f***ing band name in the world.” Though he hoped to remain anonymous, record labels quickly developed interest in the project.

Capitol Records eventually signed the album. When it came time to form a band, Grohl pulled in drummer William Goldsmith and bassist Nate Mendel, both of whom had recently departed from the band Sunny Day Real Estate. Pat Smear came on board as a second guitarist.

The Foo Fighters’ debut gig was February 23, 1995 at Arcata’s Jambalaya Club. Grohl at first refused to play large venues or to conduct interviews, but caved after the album’s release in July 1995. Things took off from there with successful single releases and months of international touring.

The Foo Fighters toured through early 1996 before returning to the studio to record their sophomore album. Grohl wrote all the songs and got assistance from his band in arranging the parts. Grohl later found he was unsatisfied with the drumming, so he scrapped the drum tracks and re-recorded them himself, which caused Goldsmith to quit the band.

The Foo Fighters needed a drummer, and quickly. He contacted Taylor Hawkins, who had drummed for Alanis Morisette, for a recommendation. Hawkins had one ready: himself. The band released The Colour and the Shape in May 1997 with Hawkins debuting. It followed up with a year of heavy touring culminating in the Reading Festival and Glastonbury Festival.

The Foo Fighters’ alternative rock sound has been cultivated from the band’s love of various genres and other artists. The band is as much influenced by Dave Grohl’s former band-mate Kurt Cobain’s minimalist rock aesthetic as it is by the decadence of Queen and the melodic purity of bands like The Beatles.

Many of Foo Fighters’ hit songs, such as “Everlong” and “The Pretender”, have distinctive melodic cores which balance out the harder edge of the band’s thrashing rock sound. Gentle verses lead into powerful, shredding choruses, which encapsulate the songs' emotion.

The Foo Fighters have received a staggering 25 Grammy nominations over the past 18 years, and have managed to take home 11 awards, including four for Best Rock Album. The band has won accolades from all over the globe, with to albums such as 2011’s Wasting Light debuting at number one in 12 countries.

Sadly, long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins died on March 25, 2022, the day the band was supposed to perform at the Estéreo Picnic Festival. The band instead turned the stage into a candlelit vigil for their departed band member and friend. On September 3, it played a tribute concert to Hawkins at Wembley Stadium in London, UK and at Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

The Foo Fighters continue to play to sold-out crowds all over the world, managing to pack out small venues and huge arenas alike. In 2008 the band played two sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium in London, England, each night rocking the audience 86,000 people. With more material on the way, the Foo Fighters’ hard-earned success and popularity are not set to diminish any time soon.

Live reviews

So I very recently reviewed an epic night with the Foo Fighters in DC for the 4th of July. Everything came together perfectly for the Foo's 20th Anniversary Show. Dave Grohl and company played the hits, as well as their debut album almost in its entirely. You can read the full review here.

But somehow, that show wasn't the Foo concert I was most excited for this year. No...that would be their huge Boston gig at the Beloved Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. (I'm a huge Sox fan) I had purchased presale tix to this back in November, and it was a long 8 months waiting for the highly anticipated weekend.

When it finally arrived, Boston was ready for it. Prior to the show, I walked over to a 'pop up shop' selling Foo Fighters memorabilia, only to realize their was a 20 minute wait to get into the store. The Fenway show was sold out with approximately 35,000 people in attendance. And this was just night 1 of 2 in Boston.

Following opening sets by Boston favorites Mission of Burma, and Mighty Mighty Bosstones, the Foo's came on right at 8pm. As was similar to the DC show, the first half was completely based on Foo Fighters greatest hits. The first 90 minutes was single after single spanning the entire Foo catalogue.

Best moment came in the middle of the set when Grohl crutched down to the end of stage and received some acoustic help from his guitarists. As they did in DC, Foo's chose to perform two of the best songs acoustically with 'My Hero' and 'Times Like These.' The volume at which the Fenway crowd sang 'My Hero' was a true highlight of the night, and may have been the best song.

Lead singer Dave Grohl definitely took some time to talk to the Fenway crowd. He explained how this was the Foo's first stadium tour, and how that was a long time coming. He listed past venues played in Boston, and what the city means to him. He also told a great story of losing his High School Battle of the Bands competition and jokingly asked what the band that won was doing tonight. This was prior to covering Queen's 'Under Pressure.' Overall, Grohl was in a chatty and pleasant mood.

With the injury still bothering Grohl, the guys skipped leaving stage for the encore and played straight through until about 10:45 (just shy of a 3 hour show, and passing the 10:30 curfew). The final closer was 'Best of You,' giving the Fenway crowd one more chance to sign along with the rock band.

The only negative I would say is that since the first half of the show was so focused on the hits, the second half seemed a bit lacking. With the exception of 'Best of You,' they had nothing left to play in the last hour that could generate the same reaction and sing a long as the first 90 minutes. Maybe they could have just spaced out the most popular tunes more.

But really it was an awesome set and even more of an epic night because of the venue. Fenway is the ballpark I grew up seeing Sox games at, so it was definitely a pretty special experience to come back and see one of my favorite bands play there. I won't be forgetting this one and look to see it towards the top of the 'Best Shows of 2015' list.

Have seen Dave Grohl solo, singing with his kids at the Fox Theater in Oakland for a UCSF "Notes and Words" benefit for very ill children. Amazing solo performance and moving to see him playing for his daughter Violet as she sang an Adele song. Tickets for show in San Jose in 2018 which was OK, but large arena (home of San Jose Sharks) and Cal Jam 2018. Cal Jam was very special as Dave, Pat, and Krist reunited to play a six song set of Nirvana songs, with John McCauley fronting for three songs and Joan Jett for three more. Only second reunion: first at Nirvana hall of fame induction; but this was the first at a concert open to us regular people. Made my spine tingle as much as if I could have attended a Beatles reunion. Dave was a monster on the drums, Pat killed it on the guitar, and Kris put forth his unique manner of playing bass. No bad locations at that venue. Pit, fixed seating, and lawn behind, so oldsters like me could sit during some of the warm up bands. Most recently saw the Foos at the Intersect Festival in Las Vegas this month. Less passion in this performance and while my favorite member of the Foos is Pat, he appeared intoxicated, totally spacing out at one point and cut off by Dave during his short solo for introductions. Wish he would skip the bottle of champagne on the stage. Did not like the Vegas venue, as in a very large tent with heavy smoking, excessive drinking, people holding up large signs blocking the view of many behind, and a nasty fistfight right in front of me with a drunk obnoxious guy getting the s**t kicked out of him by about 8 guys. Guess Dave did not see, as he is not tolerant of violence at this concerts. This was center stage about 10 people back, right in front of him. Had another very drunk woman come up and start grinding on me, looking as if she would vomit at any moment. Thankfully she left holding her mouth. I was not excited about the project of trying to find my way from front, center covered in her vomit. Vegas is a city of excess, and everything at this Amazon sponsored event seemed excessive. There were more bars than food stands. I was sick for a week from all of the smoke exposure. Hope they return to Cal Jam, keep indoor venues non-smoking, and definitely avoid the tent gigs.

Amazing, astonishing every other adjectives you can think off to describe something awesome.

Only a band like the Foo Fighters can make up a surprise concert 3 days before and sell out in the first hour that the tickets go on sale.

Dave Grohl, is a master of music and there is no doubt about it! His presence on the stage is unbelievable. Sure knows how to throw a party.

Me and maybe everybody just went with the idea of a Foo Fighters concert but we got so much more than that. Dave brought some of his friends to play along on his bash and boy where they great.

Guests like: Paul Stanley, Jakc Black and Kyle Gass (Tenacious D), Slash, David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, Perry Farrel, Lemmy Kilmister and others, like a surprise guess named Trombone Shorty and you guessed it, he jammed along the band with a TROMBONE! Was amazing, something new and even Dave said he didn't know how they could top that.

Dave was the best host EVER, he didn't rest for three and a half hours, the whole concert, he was kicking, screaming, shredding, running... NON STOP.

1. Detroit Rock City w/Paul Stanley, 2. Do You Love Me w/Paul Stanley, 3. All My Life, 4. Rope, 5. The Pretender, 6. My Hero, 7. Tie Your Mother Down (Queen cover with Tenacious D and Slash), 8. Immigrant Song (Led Zeppelin cover with Tenacious D and Slash), 9. Congregation, 10. Walk, 11. School’s Out w/Alice Cooper, 12. I’m Eighteen w/Alice Cooper, 13. Words can barely describe the experience of a Foo Fighters concert. I've seen them again and again because to me, their shows are the epitome of a true Rock and Roll experience.

From the moment I walk into the stadium, I can feel the buzz and energy of the crowd as the anticipation of the beginning of the show is growing. And once the lights dim and the first chord of the first song (usually "Times Like These" or "All My Life") is played, the audience erupts and the show has begun. The Foos always put on such a loud and energetic performance, pulling the crowd into the show and causing a bit of a frenzy! They usually have an amazing light show that is timed to go amazingly with the music and it's that kind of detail that really pulls you into their performance – you might have to check if there's going to be strobe lighting before you go.

Dave Grohl is very fun and friendly with the crowd, taking the time to make jokes and have fun with those lucky enough to be on the front row (it's pretty hard to get that close though). If you go see them, you'll absolutely get your money's worth: the many times that I have seen the Foo Fighters they have always played a long set, close to 2 hours, which is awesome, as they have such a large catalog of music you're dying to hear. So by the end of the show, I always feel that I was able to hear all of my favorite songs!

By the time the show ends and I'm leaving the stadium, I'm completely exhausted, thrilled, pumped up and really happy about the experience. I generally don't have much of a voice left, from shouting and singing along – but even then, I'm already finding myself getting excited for the next time I get to see them play live!!! And then I hit the parking lot and there's the same energy among everyone leaving – it's a great shared feeling, but it's so clear that everyone had an amazing time!!

ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWS I HAVE EVER BEEN TO! The Foo Fighters has’t played a concert in Florida in 12 years and they had finally came. They played everything from their debut album all the way to their newest album Concrete and Gold. “All my Life”, “Run”, “The Pretender”, “This is a Call”, “Breakout”,and “Everlong” are some examples of what they played! Every song they played sounded crisp and clean. I prefer them live now over prerecorded stuff. Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, Taylor Hawkins, and the rest of the gang were great at hyping up the crowd. Having simple conversation with the crowd and simply making everyone feel right at home. They also out preformed themselves playing cover songs like “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones, Van Halen’s “Jump”, Alice Cooper’s “Under my Wheels”, and “Under Pressure” by Queen. The Foo’s had a spectacular set list and made it feel more than just a Foo Fighters concert. The band had little surprises here and there throughout the show like Taylor Hawkins with a crazy drum solo that lasted for about 5 minutes! The opening act, The Struts, were also very great and played their hearts out. If you never been to a concert or never seen the Foo Fighters live, then you need to make sure you get out of your way to see these guys! They’re aboslute killers on stage! You won’t regret it! FYI if it’s an amphitheater venue it’s 10 times much better the crowd is way more fun and you can let loose and dance your ass off!

Never seen Food before so was looking forward to Night 2. Arriving in Milton Keynes at 5pm I was hopeful of catching some of Royal Blood's set. However traffjc flow inbound was terrible and I lost 90 mins waiting on a dual carriageway in Milton Keynes on route to pre-booked parking at Stadium MK. When I finally parked the car there was a 20 min hike to the National Bowl. Sadly didn't see Royal Blood and missing the start of Iggy Pop - only hearing The Passenger & Lust for Life whilst on the inbound road

Iggy Pop was good giving older Stooges song like No Fun, 1969 and Nightclubbing as well as solo hits like Real Wild Child. He still has it in spades

Foos and Dave Grohl took to the stage a little early but the appreciative crowd were complaining. Dave was seated for the duration on a techno-throne looking like a dalek Davros-like base with Foos logo and a ton of flashing lights. His broken leg did not impact him in the slightest. He told stories that kept the crowd engaged.

The other members of the band were very tight musically and showed this in solos throughout the night. Taylor Hawkins (the drummer) in particular shone - playing & singing Queen's We Will Rock You

The "Set" was a run through of the Foo Fighters best of. The sound and light show was amazing. Now a Foos fan I would definitely see them again. Thanks

I saw the Foo Fighters at Firefly 2014. The show Dave and the crew put on was easily the best show I have ever seen in my life. You will experience amazing music from every album featuring extended versions of almost every song. If the music isn't enough for you, the rock star atmosphere of the Foo Fighters will be. Chris Shiflett broke his ankle before the show and played in a chair with as much style as Nate Mendel and Pat Smear. If you know anything about Taylor Hawkins, you know he can rock the hell out of a drum set... he can also sing and did a great job at it too.

If you're lucky enough, you might see the Foo Fighters transform into a bar band called 'The Holy Shits' that does covers of classic rock songs. For their 5 song encore (yup... 5) they played 'Schools Out' by Alice Cooper, 'Miss You' by The Rolling Stones, 'Aint Talkin Bout Love' by Van Halen, and 'Under Pressure' by Queen and Bowie followed by an amazing rendition of Everlong. If you appreciate rock music, or any music at all for that matter - go see the Foo Fighters. They're worth every penny and then some and you will remember it for the rest of your life.

Love love love seeing the Foo Fighters. Avidly follow news to get tickets each time they come. So happy I got GA Standing this time as with such a big venue seating would have been wasted. However even though I was standing & got within 3 meters proximity of Dave Grohl, the venue (Etihad Stadium) is just too big. With the roof closed (due to weather) the sound quality was ok, but not exceptionally loud. Next time I want to see them return to smaller venues with multiple dates. The podium stage did allow for many fans to get much closer than normal for some parts of the show & the screens were fantastic. As usual the Foos gave an awesome performance & best of all this time they did do material from every one of their 8 albums. I just wish the'd played more from the latest as thats probably the only time we'd hear those ones live. A shame that although they played "Outside", Joe Walsh was otherwise engaged less than an hours drive away. But of course Dave did a superb job of the guitar solo. They are true entertainers & I can't wait until they release more material & come back to these shores again.

What a-effing-mazing Foo Fighters Rock Show show at the Forum that was last night (9/21). The band was fantastic, Dave is a lunatic, TH is not human, and Pat and the boys were spot on and totally entertaining. Hits flowed one after the other in a fountain of awesomeness. The crowd was thoroughly committed - I've never heard a crowd sing every last lyric, every ohhh and ahhhh. It didnt hurt that we were on the floor at the rails - best "seats" I've ever had to a show. While it was a cool concept to bring Stevie Nicks onstage with Haim (who are these girls, and why were they up there), it was a mash-up that failed to work for me. Stevie looked frail, and her stumbling gait down the runway (did she hurt her leg or were her boots too heavy) was just painful to watch. At least it was only 2 songs (i'd rather more Jack Black). I love that Foo doesn't encore - they play till the cops kick them offstage - and you leave. My ears are STILL ringing, and I can't get the refrain "Something from Nothing" out of my head and the smile off my face... Thank you Foo Fighters and the Forum for a GREAT show.

Not as good as their 2011 visit, but still an awesome gig by any other standard. The end of tour set, plus Dave's round the world trip for his daughter's dance, & the subsequent food poisoning clearly took a toil on his voice. Taylor's voice was also hardly there when he tried to sing. Still, they soldiered on like the true rock stars that they are, and rocked the stadium. Set design was a clear improvement, with the wide layout instead of the long & narrow, which meant that the seated tickets up the back line had a better view instead of the "shitty seats" from last time, especially with the raised sound desk blocking most of the view from their previous visit. The rising middle stage was a very welcome surprise, especially from the middle of the standing area. Not a big fan of all ages family crowds in the free standing area, with no concept of regular mosh etiquette. Might get seated tickets next time. Not a huge fan of their new material either, but am glad they kept them to the barest minimum. Also looks like Dave has settled on his signature guitar, & it looks & sounds absolutely amazing!

Ready to get some tickets to see Foo Fighters live this year? A lot of dates have sold out via Ticketmaster , but you might still be able to find seats elsewhere.

Stubhub is our top pick for finding tickets to sold-out concerts in the US. The platform is protected by the FanProtect Program, so you won’t have to worry about scams or fake tickets. Plus, you might get lucky and find tickets that are a bit cheaper than face value. It’s worth a shot if Ticketmaster no longer has tickets available for your preferred tour date.

For fans in the UK and Europe who want to catch Foo Fighters on their tour, we recommend Viagogo . Viagogo has great deals for non-US shows, and may even have sold-out tickets in stock.

Foo Fighters returned to the road with the launch of their 2024 Everything or Nothing at All tour on May 1 in Dallas.

The sold-out show took place at the Dos Equis Pavilion, with an estimated 20,000 fans in attendance.

Dave Grohl and his bandmates have a well-earned reputation for delivering long shows, and they certainly were up to the task on this night, rocking through 24 songs during their set.

Foo Fighters gave fans an eclectic assortment of songs during their tour opener. Yes, the massive hits were well represented, as "The Pretender," "Times Like These," "All My Life" and "Best of You" all got their time to shine. But the band also mixed in deeper cuts, like "Arlandria" (from 2011's Wasting Light ) and "La Dee Da" (from 2017's Concrete and Gold ).

Midway through the show, Grohl paid tribute to late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell .

"Since we're here in Dallas, I'm gonna dedicate this one to an old friend who lived around here," the frontman declared. "His name was 'Dimebag' Darrell. How about that? Let's hear it for Darrell. It's called 'My Hero'."

Naturally, the evening ended with the Foo Fighters' customary closer, "Everlong." See the full set list and fan-shot videos from the concert below.

Foo Fighters' 2024 Summer Plans

Foo Fighters' initial stretch of 2024 U.S. dates will last two weeks and include stops at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, Shaky Knees Festival and Welcome to Rockville. In June, the band heads to the U.K. and Europe for performance, before returning Stateside for a longer run of dates beginning in July. Mammoth WVH and the Pretenders will each open select concerts later in the summer.

Notably, this marks the Foo Fighters first extensive North American tour with Josh Freese as part of the band. The drummer, who took over for the late Taylor Hawkins in 2023, previously joined the group for some one-off U.S. dates and a tour of Australia and New Zealand. The Dallas show featured several songs Freese hadn't previously performed with the band, including "Bridge Burning" and "Medicine at Midnight." The There Is Nothing Left to Lose song "Aurora" was dedicated to Hawkins.

Here’s the epic setlist from the first night of Foo Fighters’ Everything Or Nothing At All tour

Last night (May 1) at the Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas, Texas, Foo Fighters kicked off their Everything Or Nothing At All summer stadium tour in typically humongous fashion.

Supported by K! faves Nova Twins , Foos treated the Lone Star State to a whopping 24-song set – technically more if you break up the medley – including monster hits Best Of You, All My Life and Breakout, as well as a handful of newies like Rescued, The Glass and the heart-wrenching The Teacher from their latest record But Here We Are .

The tour rolls on across the States for the rest of the month, before the Foos hit the UK for some huge shows at Old Trafford and the London Stadium, then onto the Euro fests and back to the States again.

If you're heading to those shows, here's a look at what you're in for...

What Is Foo Fighters’ Tour Setlist For 2023?

Derrick Rossignol

Foo Fighters are officially back on the road. Last night (May 24), the band took to the Bank Of New Hampshire Pavilion At Meadowbrook in Gilford, New Hampshire for their first show with Josh Freese as their new touring drummer, following the death of Taylor Hawkins . In New Hampshire, they opened with the recent single “Rescued,” from the upcoming album But Here We Are . The setlist also featured other songs from the album: the title track, “Under You,” and “Nothing At All.”

Also of note was a performance of “ Cold Day In The Sun ,” a Hawkins-written track the band hadn’t played live since 2018.

Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters

Now more than a year removed from the tragic death of drummer Taylor Hawkins , the Foo Fighters return this summer with a heap of headlining festival gigs spanning four continents. Bonnaroo, Boston Calling and Riot Fest are all on the stateside docket, as are Japan’s Fuji Rock, Germany’s Rock AM Ring and a pair of monster performances in Brazil.

The roadshow will feature Josh Freese, well-traveled session and touring vet (Weezer, Nine Inch Nails), on the kit, as the band confirmed during a streaming event Sunday. The schedule kicks off Wednesday, May 24, in Gilford, New Hampshire. As Dave Grohl and company soldier on, celebrating one of the most successful rock careers of the last 30 years — plus the upcoming June 2 release of their bittersweet 11th album But Here We Are — it’s time to get nerdy with the Foos’ hit-filled catalog.

Sure, there are the dozen or more raging standards every fan expects at a Foo Fighters show, but what about the rest of the rather prolific songbook — the stuff that holds up but doesn’t always make it to stage? And of course, as the band has consistently dropped worthy records since its debut in ‘95, there’s value in the newer cuts, too.

With all of this taken into consideration, we’ve devised what would make for the most epic Foo Fighters concert that could possibly exist in 2023, showcasing where they’ve been, who they are and where they’re going. This crop of tunes caters to fans both casual and deeply committed and delivers some deserved surprises.

While this list of 24 songs may run a bit longer than the average Foo Fighters festival set — we’d clock this in between two and two-and-a-half hours — few bands are better at blasting past their sky-high expectations. Also, it’s our dream set and we do what we want. Let’s break it down!

Unlikely circumstances call for an unlikely beginning. The show kicks off not with fury but with Grohl solo at center stage. Single spotlight, single guitar, band waiting in the wings. He begins “Doll,” the wistful prelude from 1997’s fan-beloved The Colour and the Shape , strumming it live for the first time since 2003. The first verse takes on new meaning: “You know in all of the time that we’ve shared, I’ve never been so scared/ Doll me up in my bad luck, I’ll meet you there.” Thousands of men in backward baseball caps cry like children.

"Times Like These"

Foo Fighters

Grohl finishes, shakes a tear from his scruff and the band trots out. Grohl hammers his dissonant chords, yells his requisite “alright, you motherf–kers!” and Freese hits his kit — kick-kick-snare. All bets are off, as the band flies through its first of many monster-rock anthems of the night. It’s a new chapter for the band and it’s gonna be a good one.

"Monkey Wrench"

A classic early-set favorite, keeping the tone light and energy high, as fans of a certain age think fondly upon the days of Guitar Hero II and nailing that big, bright melody 15 times in a row.

“No Way Back”

Another deep-ish cut; a fan favorite from 2005’s In Your Honor (overshadowed by the runaway success of “Best of You” at the time). It’s the first time the Foos have jammed it on stage in 15 years, and diehards roar as soon as they place the rollicking riff.

Grohl and Co. take a breather as the frontman properly addresses the crowd for the first time. He calls them “motherf–kers” at least three more times, mentions how great it is to be back and how music heals all wounds. He then asks the crowd “will you motherf–kers run for your life with me?” before swinging into the lead single off 2017’s Concrete and Gold, which starts slow but builds to loud, shouty punk mayhem in due time. A few fans try to mosh, most wouldn’t dare; they have to be in the office on Monday.

The new lead single from the band’s upcoming LP tugs at the heartstrings as the crowd shouts with Dave “are you feeling … what I’m feeling?!” The song slots in easily with crunchy, fun guitars and a towering chorus — it’s as Foo Fighter-y a single as the band has released in its last few cycles (no shade to Medicine at Midnight; it was fine).

“Learning to Fly”

Foo Fighters

Fans are rewarded with a world-beater, which the band typically slips in earlier than later in sets, saving the more dramatic sing-alongs for later. “Fly” is all summer breeze and looking for the sky to save you. A few cans of Michelob Ultra are heaved heavenward, floating across the festival in triumph.

“Long Road to Ruin”

The second single off 2007’s Echoes — generally forgotten by casual fans, well-loved by diehards — was a set staple until about 2015 then lopped off in favor of newer tunes. But no more! “Long Road” is back, longtime guitarist Chris Shiflett nails the solo and all is well.

Another quintessential “oh yeah, this song !” from the Foos’ catalog — even though they’ve played it consistently since its release almost 25 years ago. “Breakout” is a good time, almost pop-punk in its speed and sentiment.

Grohl pauses again, hurls a few more warm expletives over the crowd of tens of thousands, and asks rhetorically how many fans remember 2011’s Wasted Light album — everyone cheers for what might’ve been the last truly great Foo Fighters album. The nerdiest fans tell their friends how the album was recorded in Grohl’s garage and it was their first to tap Butch Vig as producer, the drummer for Garbage who famous produced Nirvana’s Nevermi—  the song mercifully kicks in, the chorus is killer, the geeks are silenced.

“These Days”

The Wasted Light suite rambles on for two more tracks, first another winner in “These Days,” with Grohl’s excellently serrated hook: “Easy for you to say, your heart has never been broken/ Your pride has never been stolen, not yet, not yet!”

One more, the most anthemic of the bunch, laid over an opening guitar riff that sounds a whole lot like Tal Bachman’s “She’s So High.” Then the heavy chug swoops in as the crowd croons “I believe I’ve waited long enough.” The track builds to its incendiary finish: “I never wanna die, I never wanna die, I’m on my knees, I never wanna die!” Catharsis abounds.

“This is a Call”

Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters

Grohl takes it all the way back, to the first album, the first single, the first track any early adopters of the Foo Fighters ever heard. It still plays like a McCartney-meets-Cobain pop-grunge banger (as does so much of Grohl’s songbook).

“Hey, Johnny Park!” (acoustic)

The romp slows down for a while here. Grohl, Smear and Shiflett grab acoustic guitars. Freese leaves the main kit for a smaller set-up. Maybe there’s a cajon. God, let there be a cajon. The band gets closer, a tight semi-circle for a 15-minute, stripped down mini-set, beginning with a fan favorite off Colour, which has rarely (if ever) gotten the three-guitar, acoustic-chug treatment. Warm lamps light the stage, it’s a vibe.

“Wheels” (acoustic)

They pivot to this deeper cut, included as a promo single for the 2009 Greatest Hits compilation. The new arrangement gives the Tom Petty-ish cut an almost countrified lean. More cursory fans run to the beer tents and port-a-Johns. Hey, every set needs a bathroom moment!

“Big Me” (acoustic)

The stakes raise a little with “Big Me,” a well-loved sing-songy stalwart off the 1995 debut, which is basically a Beatles song and in this unassuming setting feels like a Foos version of Get Back. It’s unclear who Lennon is in this scenario.

“Waiting on a War” (acoustic into full band)

The night’s lone cut from Medicine is used as a brilliant transition back to mega-rock spectacle, as the tune natural builds from humble beginnings to a very “Free Bird”-like jam session, as the rest of the band plugs back in and goes off, dueling short solos — a tech tosses Grohl his Gibson just in time for the final, piercing notes.

“The Pretender”

It’s all gravy from here on out. Grohl is merely a vessel for perspiration as he hammers his guitar, screaming “What if I say I’m not like the others?!” The audience barks back, happily relinquishing use of their vocal chords for the next 48 hours.

Remember last fall, when Taylor Hawkins’ 16-year-old son, Shane, emerged during his father’s tribute concert to play “My Hero”? Well, the teen beast is back again, trotting out for a guest spot in dad’s honor, as the crowd cheers (between heaving sobs). Shane crushes the song, the night’s biggest moment so far, as the chorus reaches Earth’s thermosphere. Even the security guards are singing along. And somewhere better, Hawkins is smiling.

“Everlong” (with “February Stars” intro)

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters

Shane jogs off, 20,000 dads use their t-shirts as handkerchiefs and the band finishes the main set with its calling card — but with a twist! They begin with a few telling lines from “February Stars,” which precedes “Everlong” on the album. Solo and sad, Grohl whispers: “Watched you come and go/ How was I to know/ You’d steal the show.” Before most fans even realize what’s happening and how special a moment it is to hear the snippet (the band hasn’t played it live since ‘06), the familiar riff begins. Then the second, louder guitar. And it’s alt-rock euphoria. Dave bless us, everyone.

ENCORE: “All My Life”

The stage darkens, the band leaves, Grohl discards his sweat-soaked black tank-top for an identical black tank-top. They return to a roar, but the lights stay down. Then you hear it: “da-da-da, da-da-da,” that unmistakable riff. “All my life I’ve been searchin’ for something, something never comes, never leads to nothing…” It’s very loud and it’s freaking awesome. “ Done! I’m done! And I’m on to the next! ”

ENCORE: “The Colour and the Shape”

The band stays heavy — as heavy as they’ve ever been — on the mostly screamed, garage-punk title track, performed live for the first time since ‘98. New fans don’t know it and that’s okay, the dudes who’ve been on the Foos train since the Clinton administration become feral.

ENCORE: “Live-in Skin”

One more gem for the true fans, who will forever be able to say they saw the first-ever live rendition of “Live-in Skin,” an awesome album track from 99’s There Is Nothing Left to Lose, which has developed a sort of mystique on the Foo Fighters subreddits, mainly for its scarcity. “I’m amazed that I’m still standing” Grohl sings in the hook, the lyric meaning so much more now.

ENCORE: “Best of You”

Grohl slugs down a beer, thanks the gigantic crowd for sticking with his band of misfits for nearly 30 years and shouts, “Oh, and one last thing — I GOT ANOTHER CONFESSION TO MAKE!” One more titanic sing-along for the road, as the song extends with extra guitar breaks and the fireworks boom above. The shrewder fans book it for the parking lot, all but floating on their high of witnessing one of the last monster-rock bands unleash the set of their lives — and find redemption in tragedy.

On the anniversary of his joining Foo Fighters, Josh Freese pays tribute to Taylor Hawkins

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

A year ago today, Foo Fighters announced that Josh Freese would be joining them behind the drum kit , in place of the late Taylor Hawkins. The news was revealed during a streaming event, Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts

The new man was introduced as the band were filmed chatting, their conversation interrupted as a trio of well-known drummers –  Red Hot Chili Peppers ' Chad Smith,  Motley Crue 's Tommy Lee, and  Tool 's Danny Carey – appeared onscreen, before the camera cut to Freese. And now he's taken to social media to remember the broadcast, and to pay tribute to the man he replaced.

"A year ago today this aired," says Freese, "and I got to stop keeping quiet about what had been referred to as 'the worst kept secret in the music business' at the time (though I thought we did a pretty good job on our end.). Foo Fighters released an hour-long special of us playing some songs at rehearsal.

"I love the way it came out and am proud of it. I joked that all we really needed was All My Life and then move on (because it's so goddamn good.) That being said, I continue to miss Taylor as does the band, his family, friends and the rest of the world. We also continue to try and make the most of the situation by moving forward and doing what we love doing... playing music, honouring Taylor and staying positive."

Freese has since played nearly 70 shows with Foo Fighters, and his previous work with the likes Devo and Nine Inch Nails is often recognised in a mid-set medley. The band's UK tour begins in Manchester on June 13. Full dates below.

The Foo Fighters have spent decades establishing themselves as one of the biggest bands in rock music. They scored some very early hits that are still beloved to this day, and they continue to churn out tunes and albums that perform incredibly well. As one of their most recent singles (“The Glass”) continues to rise on a few radio rankings, the group also returns to the charts in America with one of their most familiar releases.

“Everlong” is back on at least one Billboard ranking this frame. The tune blasts onto the Rock Streaming Songs tally at No. 19 this time around, as it managed to rack up enough plays on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and several others to stand out as one of the most successful in the genre.

As of this week, “Everlong” has spent 65 weeks on the Rock Streaming Songs chart, making it a standout success story. It’s previously risen as high as No. 9, and now it’s back inside the top 20 upon its re-arrival.

“Everlong” is back on one list, but it appears on several rankings at once. As it returns to the Rock Streaming Songs ranking, the tune also surges on the Alternative Streaming Songs chart. On that roster, it’s up from No. 17 to No. 9, finding its way back to the top 10.

On yet another related tally, it’s steady–but only because it has nowhere left to climb. “Everlong” is a non-mover at No. 1 on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart this week. The smash single has now spent an incredible 67 frames atop the list, which is rarely seen on any of Billboard’s rankings.

Biden vs. trump 2024 election polls: biden leads trump by only single digits in new york, latest survey shows, here are the major allegations against sean diddy combs as cassie ventura breaks silence on attack video.

The continued–and growing–success of “Everlong” is seemingly helping one of the Foo Fighters’ most popular full-lengths climb on a handful of Billboard charts as well. The tune is featured on the band’s Greatest Hits , which lifts on a trio of rankings. Plays of the tune are likely fueling that rise.

Greatest Hits steps up one rung on the Billboard 200, settling at No. 112, and its surge is more impressive on the genre-specific lists this week. On the Top Rock & Alternative Albums tally, it jumps from No. 26 to No. 22. Over on the Top Alternative Albums list, it rises from No. 13 into the top 10, landing at No. 10. It’s comfortable again at No. 6 on the Top Hard Rock Albums roster.

Foo Fighters invite 'superfan' Michael Bublé on stage for their cover of his song 'Haven't Met You Yet'

Because you can never take a joke too far.

An ongoing Foo Fighters joke has finally reached its natural conclusion: a surprise performance from Michael Bublé .

Throughout their most recent tour, the band has made a special effort to spotlight their new live drummer, Josh Freese , with a medley dedicated to the many artists he's worked with over the years. The list includes Guns N' Roses , Paramore , Blink-182 , Avril Lavigne , Beastie Boys , Offspring, Nine Inch Nails , and, yes, Bublé.

Focusing on Freese's connection to the pop and jazz singer, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has made a habit of welcoming fans on stage to offer their rendition of Bublé's song "Haven't Met You Yet." But since no one seemed to know all the lyrics during the group's set at the Outside Lands music festival in San Francisco on Saturday, Grohl turned to a superfan.

"You know what? At the last couple shows, I always look out and someone's like, 'I know the Bublé song. I'll come up and sing it,'" Grohl told the crowd. But, he added, "Every time someone says they know this song, they don't know the f---ing song."

As the intro to the track played, Grohl pointed out a particular concertgoer holding an "I heart Bublé" sign. "Do you know the f---ing song?" the former Nirvana member asked. "Hold on, we got a superfan. He's got the 'I love Bublé!'"

As he made his way to the stage, the "superfan" turned out to be Bublé himself, who joined Foos to sing his chart-topping single "Haven't Met You Yet."

"This motherf---er better know the song," Grohl quipped early on, but towards the end of the performance he acknowledged the obvious by exclaiming in faux shock, "Oh my god, it's Michael Bublé! Wait, what?!"

He later addressed the crowd, offering more context. "I'm just gonna tell you something, and I'll make it f---ing quick because we don't have a lot of time," Grohl said. "For real, we've been doing that thing where people from the audience come up and say, 'I know the f---ing song,' and they walk up and they're like, 'I know the first verse.' They don't know it!"

Motioning to Bublé, he continued, "So this badass motherf---er — and I'm not even kidding — flew in today from Argentina to f---ing sing that song to you guys. Because there's no such thing as taking a joke too far."

Along with Bublé's "Haven't Met You Yet," the full Freese medley included Beastie Boys' "Sabotage," Devo's "Whip It," and Nine Inch Nails' "March of the Pigs."

Speaking to EW in 2009, the prolific drummer joked about his impressive résumé but lack of name recognition. "I work with famous people, but I'm kind of under the radar," Freese said. "I'm probably famous to the drummer kid that lives down the street from me, but that's about it."

Foo Fighters' released their latest album, But Here We Are , in June. Watch their Freese medley with Bublé above.
