TSA Approved Tool Box – Ultimate Buyers Guide To TSA Regulations And Safety

Photo of author

I saw a guy just the other day flying with his tools for work. It was a TSA approved tool box. With the TSA regulating everything from toothpicks to guns, it’s no wonder a toolbox is also regulated. When I saw him, of course, I had to ask all kinds of questions. Then I had a thought: I bet there are a ton of people who want to know all about flying with tools.

Tools cost a fortune, and I know the last thing I would want is to have them confiscated because they are in the wrong kind of box or do not comply with TSA rules.

In this article, I will cover the TSA rules and regulations regarding a TSA approved tool box and review four of the top tool boxes suitable for air travel. I will also provide a list of items that can not be taken on a plane, along with weight and size recommendations.

So, together, let’s dive into the world of TSA approved tool boxes.

TSA Rules Quick Look

But first, let me quickly list some TSA regulations to be aware of to help choose a case. The TSA says tools 7 inches or shorter can be in a carry-on bag; anything longer must go in cargo-checked luggage. Removable lithium-ion batteries go in carry-on bags. Power tools go in checked luggage. See the lists below for clarity.

Understanding The TSA Guidelines

Now that I have lined out four beautifully functional options, let’s delve into the specifics of a TSA approved tool Box. Understanding the TSA guidelines that govern the transportation of tools and other equipment helps you navigate the airport easily.

TSA Regulations For Tools In Checked Bags

TSA has specific rules and regulations about what can and cannot be carried in checked and carry-on luggage. According to TSA regulations, most tools can go in checked bags. However, there are some exceptions.

list prohibited in checked

This is not an all-inclusive list, but it may help those traveling with a TSA approved tool box knowing what can go on a plane and what cannot.

Checked Or Carry On?

Packing Lithium Ion Batteries: Do’s And Don’ts

Lithium-ion batteries, often found in power tools, have specific packing guidelines. They should be put in carry-on luggage, not checked bags. A lithium-ion battery poses a fire hazard, so it should never be packed in a checked bag.

TSA Size And Weight Limit For A TSA Approved Tool Box To Check

The TSA does not impose a weight limit for checked bags. However, most airlines have a weight limit of 50 pounds per bag. The size limit for checked bags is typically 62 linear inches (length + width + height). Bags exceeding these limits may incur additional fees.

You can find the exact weight and size requirements for a TSA approved tool box on each airline’s website. Please check before you head to the airport.

What should I do if my tool box is lost or damaged during travel?

Sebring Tip:

I’m confident that you will find many reasons to like this fantastic Stackable Rolling Mobile Tool Box provided by the well-known and dependable Stalwart. The robustness of this toolbox’s design is one of its incredible features. I can demonstrate this quality because it was made from a combination of metal, PVC, and polypropylene materials.

This combination strengthens the toolbox, allowing it to safely and securely retain both hand and power tools. I like how easy it is to transport this toolbox from one location to another. It is even suitable for usage in rough construction sites.

  • Water-resistant
  • Extremely sturdy
  • Include only one tray

Do you not need all that extra space and only want a little something to your core set of tools? The DEWALT Tough System DS 300 has got you covered. Like the old style of equipment boxes that give you a single compartment to work with, this tools box made it to the next level by offering additional protection. When you want something that will protect your tools no matter what’s happening outside, this is the tool box that is perfect for you.

  • You can customize storage options
  • Lightweight
  • Can hold longer items at the back
  • The plastic may wear out easily

If you simply have a tool box to keep the necessities required for basic home repairs, hanging photographs, or tightening up loose chair legs, there is simply no reason to invest a ton of money. But this does not mean you’ve to go for a substandard product. While it is not created for complex usage on a worksite, the Stanley Modular Rolling Workshop Tool Box features heavy plastic, which keeps up very well in the typical house.

  • Aluminum handle
  • Many storage compartments
  • Large removable storage tray
  • Two wheels and a collapsible handle
  • The wheels are not sturdy enough to carry weight

The Torin Big Red TRJF C305ABD garage workshop organizer is a portable, stackable rolling upright trolley tool box with many storage compartment drawers. It is built with polypropylene and steel, offering a stable and durable platform that can hold up in the toughest environments. Perfect for both industrial and residential use. It comes with a limited one year manufacturer warranty.

  • Really versatile
  • Telescoping handle
  • Plenty of room for bigger tools
  • No small parts organizer
  • Difficult to move up/down stairs

Stackable tool boxes provide the very best of both worlds: Stack them up high just like a best tool chest for optimum storage with the smallest footprint, or separate them if needed to tote only the tools you need. And also, the Stalwart Oversized Portable Tool Chest functions in both scenarios like a champ.

The entire structure weighs 33 pounds and has a total weight capacity of 150 lbs.

  • Durable construction
  • Holds huge tools
  • All-terrain wheels

If you have a huge collection of power and hand tools, and are searching for a large box to tote them inside, you have met your match with the Milwaukee Packout 22 Inch Rolling Tool Box. The package itself weighs 23 pounds when empty.

The Packout is essentially a huge box; there are no included organizers or trays, which means you can pack in even large and oddly shaped tools with ease. It is made of heavy-duty red impact-resistant plastic with metal reinforced corners and is weather-sealed to keep your tools protected from the elements.

  • Flexible storage options
  • Only comes with one tool box

We really love DEWALT stuff, and the TSTAK product line creates wonderful stackable tool boxes. However, it may be tedious to build an excellent set of mobile tool boxes. Meanwhile, it does allow it to be easy to choose only the boxes you will really need and customize it for your needs, so that is great.

To help you a bit, you will have to head to the primary TSTAK product web page and add at least one to the cart, then return and choose the various other TSTAK options until you come across everything you need. The best part is that several of them are mentioned as choices on this primary product page. You can also find the options by searching for Dewalt TSTAK at Amazon.

Buying Guide For Stackable Tool Boxes

The portable toolbox will help you look for tools instantly if you want them to handle emergency repairs/simple maintenance or typical work at your worksite. We’ve provided all of the vital info about the portable toolbox to assist you in choosing your best choice, as per your necessity.

Let us check out what elements to consider while shopping for stackable tool boxes.

Types Of Stackable Tool Boxes

You will find two basic kinds of portable tool boxes—rolling tool box and hand carry tool boxes. Check them out to have a detailed idea.

Hand-Carry Tool Boxes

This is created to build with either hard plastic or sheet metal. Here, the toolbox produced with metal is sturdy and longer-lasting, whereas the plastic-made toolbox is waterproof, compact, and lightweight. Thus, according to your personal preference and how you utilize the toolbox, you need to determine whether to buy a plastic or metal toolbox.

Also, keep in mind that your toolboxes need sufficient room for the standard hand tools like screwdrivers, hammers, wrenches (up to 27 mm), along with additional small hand tools. A couple of high-end models provide some extra space for tiny power tools, like an angle grinder or hand drill.

Rolling Toolbox

We usually see many large tool boxes piled on top of each other positioned on a rolling trolley with 2 wheels for easy movement. The best thing about this particular rolling type is that it can quickly hold more tools than the typical toolbox.

They’re a few hand-carry tool boxes piled atop one another. Most rolling tool boxes allow you to remove the top box and utilize it as a hand carry compartment. When you would like to haul all of these tools to a remote worksite, then a rolling tool box is an ideal choice for your requirements. Additionally, a few models have big, solid rubber wheels which could be quickly carried over any sort of terrain. Others have casters that allow you to coast over hard or smooth surfaces.

Characteristics To Watch Out For When Buying Stackable Tool Boxes

When getting the best-sized toolbox, you’ve got to look at your tool collection size, box storage space location, and how often you will move it from a single spot to another. Remember that whenever the dimensions of the box increase, its weight also increases. For example, you need a hand-carry toolbox to take simple hand tools, whereas you need a rolling type toolbox when carrying plenty of power tools.

Steel and plastic are two standard materials utilized to build the portable toolbox. The steel box is good, long-lasting, expensive, and will last longer, but not waterproof and heavy. Plastic is lightweight, inexpensive, waterproof tool box but will not hold much weight. Based upon your work environment, you need to select the construction built of a toolbox.

Number of Compartments

Most lightweight toolbox choices offer numerous boxes, including three boxes or four boxes, based on the specific design. A more significant number of compartments like four containers will let you store far more tools in a well-organized way. Apart from checking out the number of boxes/compartments, look at the compartment design to understand the boxes are detachable or not.

Weight And Load Capacity Of A Toolbox

How much weight a toolbox can deal with will identify the load capacity of a specific toolbox. The producer provides a clear idea of this load capacity on the package or user manual. Basically, steel and composite toolboxes carry more weight than a plastic toolbox. Indeed, the weightier the toolbox, the harder it could be to carry and lug around to the worksite. Furthermore, the load capacity and weight are interconnected. A heavyweight toolbox could easily store plenty of tool weight but is a little challenging to move around unless it has wheels to move easily.

Benefits of Portable Stackable Tool Boxes

Here’s the list of advantages you’ve to learn before looking for portable toolboxes. Check them out!

It’s helpful while performing your duties in remote areas, in which you’ve got to haul your equipment along with you. Thus, a lightweight toolbox will make it perfectly suitable and stop wasting time to make back and forth trips.

While working outdoors, you need to keep your equipment protected from the outside environment. For instance, you need to shut the lid of the toolbox and head for protection when raining abruptly on your worksite. Thus, a waterproof toolbox is going to keep your tools dry and allow you to stay safe. Besides, it shields you from any risk happening while running all around the worksite with a large bag of resources.

Secure Your Tools

One needs to stow their devices and some other belongings protected with a lock and key as you work on a site. This can restrict others not to use them unknowingly. Most portable toolboxes are available with padlocks to secure your tools and keep them from theft.

Permanent Storage

We generally separate certain tools into specific containers to manage them & save your valuable storage space. Many of these tools may be permanently kept in portable toolboxes and will require less space.

Organize Your Stuff

With portable tool boxes, you can have your equipment well organized in one spot since a single box is focused on hand tools, while others are employed for power tools, measurement instruments, and so on. This particular way of organizing will allow you to work quickly and enhance a compelling work experience.

Act As Emergency Tool Kits In Vehicle

An emergency tool kit is necessary to have in each automobile, even used only to keep jumper cables, road flares, and other emergency essentials. Next, in this situation, a portable toolbox will save the storage area of the kit inside the trunk of the vehicle.

Drop-Resistant Up To A Certain Height

An excellent toolbox must sustain falling from a particular level (a few feet) without receiving much damage. For example, if it falls inadvertently from the bed of a truck as you move, the tools will not be spread on the street and thereby present a significant threat to various other automobile drivers.

Conclusion:

Milwaukee has hit the spot with their Packout product. It’s so far the best stackable tool boxes available for sale. Moreover, this product is durable and heavy-duty. It can move a 250lb load, and it is metal reinforced for strength and rigidity. If you are looking for the best tool box, try Milwaukee Packout 22 Inch Rolling Tool Box .

We like the single tool boxes may be removed, locked (rings also reinforced with metal), and stacked differently when preferred. It is also modular, which means you can include alternative Packout organizers and toolboxes. This is the perfect all-around portable, rolling tool box and deserves consideration in case you are in the market for one. This can be your perfect tool box on wheels!

Best TSA-Approved Tools – Our Favorite Airplane-Safe Picks

BEST TSA-APPROVED TOOLS – OUR FAVORITE AIRPLANE-SAFE PICKS

Finding pocket TSA-approved tools that will get through airline security can be a little tricky. We figured we’d try to bring some clarity—and reveal our thoughts on the best TSA-approved or airplane-safe tools. Of course, when we say TSA-approved we really mean TSA-compliant. Check out our favorite items below that you can (as of this writing) bring with you when flying within the United States.

Much speculation and claims surround approved vs unapproved TSA items. We figured the best way to find out what you can fly with is to simply try it for ourselves. Check the TSA website , and you can get a pretty clear picture of prohibited items. Using that as our baseline, we looked for some pocket-size tools that had items we could use but did not include any of the banned items.

Table of Contents

Tsa approved tools don’t include knives, are your tools tsa-approved or airplane safe, best tsa-approved tool for multifunction use, best tsa-approved tool for your keychain, best tsa-approved small pliers, best tsa-approved airplane-safe keychain tools, best tsa-approved credit card style tool, testing tsa-approved tools in actual travel.

Editors note: This article is not intended to endorse or encourage illegal behavior by bringing banned items on commercial airline flights. The purpose of this article is to shed some light on what could be deemed as ‘approved’ pocket tools to take on flights with you. In this article, “approved” simply means “not specifically on the current banned list”. Travel with any pocket tool at your own risk. And always remember that regardless of what the TSA rules say, an actual TSA agent has the right to confiscate just about anything, even if it’s a product you’ve brought onto a plane previously or something that is not necessarily banned according to official policies. We know this first hand!

There are many of us that always carry some kind of pocket knife or another useful compact tool so that we can be like adult boy scouts when the need arises. To be without our knife or other tool leaves us feeling lost when situations arise that require a quick slice or something opened.

When it comes to traveling for a short trip by air, we often do not check our baggage which means that we have to leave our knives and tools at home. This past summer I got tired of not being prepared and figured I would search out and find some sort of pocket tools that we could fly with.

TSA approved tools

Most manufacturers are hesitant to claim that their product is airline or TSA-safe. After scanning the TSA website and going through their prohibited and permitted items, we have an observation. If it is in question, it probably is prohibited. You can check out the list here  for yourself. We included some notable items below that we thought interesting—specifically in the area of household tools:

What You CAN Bring in Your Carry-on

  • Bottle openers
  • Corkscrews (Really, have they not seen any action films?)
  • Flashlights
  • Multi-tool (Leatherman-style without blades)
  • Screwdrivers (seven inches or less in length)
  • Tape measures
  • Wrenches and pliers (seven inches or less in length)
  • Robotic vacuums (yes, seriously)

What You CANNOT Bring in Your Carry-on

  • Drills and drill bits
  • Hammers & mallets
  • Tools longer than 7 inches from end to end
  • Power tools

Given this short list of permitted items, you really have to look hard when searching for options. We recommend starting small…literally. There are a number of key chain size multi-tools but most of them include knives or blades. A knife of any size immediately disqualifies the tool for air travel… even though my ballpoint pen could do more damage than many of the 2″ blades I’ve seen.

Swiss+Tech ST53100 19-in-1 Micro Pocket Multitool

Swiss+Tech ST53100 19-in-1 Micro Pocket Multitool

Swiss+Tech makes this tool out of hardened steel which helps to ensure durability. It includes two hex wrenches, 6 screwdrivers, pliers, a bottle opener, a wirecutter/stripper, a hand drill, and a file. You even get two small rulers with extensions. Best of all, the tool carries a limited lifetime warranty. Priced around $25, this little tool can get you through your travels in a pinch.

Geekey Multi-Tool

Geekey Multi-Tool Stainless Steel Key

I already love keychain USB thumb drives . Now, I’m hooked on key-shaped airplane-safe multi-tools. This one in particular packs more than 16 functions into a tiny tool that fits right on your keychain. You get a bike spoke key, multi-tip screwdriver, imperial and metric wrench, ¼-inch bit driver, scoring tip, can/bottle opener, wire stripper, file, and more. At less than $18, these make great stocking stuffers!

Swiss+Tech ST50022 Key Ring Multi-Tool

TSA-approved airplane-safe tools

The durable and precision-made Swiss+Tech ST50022 Key Ring Multi-Tool TSA-safe tool includes pliers, a wire cutter/stripper, and dedicated Philips and flat screwdrivers. Weighing just 1.6 oz, this little tool is easy to keep on hand since it takes up so little space. While many of these small tools include a wrench, the ST50022 actually works at releasing and tightening smaller nuts. The quick-release self-locking jaws can also keep this tool tightly secured to a key ring. If that doesn’t get you excited—the price might. You can find this tool online for less than $10!

Kershaw PT-2 Compact Keychain Pry Tool

Kershaw PT-2 Compact Keychain Pry Tool

For less than $10 you can go from a boring keychain to something with a bit of built-in functionality. The Kershaw PT-2 Compact Keychain Pry Tool combines a prybar, can opener, nut-and-screwdriver, and more. It even adds a glass-filled nylon handle overtop the 8Cr13MoV stainless steel body. We love the simplicity of this TSA-approved tool and that should also help you get it through security without much trouble.

Widget Credit Card Wallet Size Multitool

Widget Credit Card Wallet Size TSA-approved Multitool

Another sub-$10 product, this credit-card-sized multi-tool is forged from heat-treated 420 stainless steel. It should fit in most wallets and weighs just 1 ounce. You get three screwdrivers (including one for eyeglasses), a bottle/can opener, a ruler (cm/in), a nail puller, various hex wrenches—and a protractor. They even make a model with an integrated money clip .

we flew with these readily exposed

To test out if these TSA-approved tools were commercial airline-safe, we took some with us on several multi-day trips. These involved multiple airports and numerous TSA screening positions. One even went on an international flight. Determined that we would not do our testing stealthily by trying to conceal these tools in our carry-on luggage, we simply carried them in our laptop bag and even in our pockets.

When required, we sent these airplane-safe tools through the scanning equipment by themselves. We kept them completely exposed in a bowl. Never once were we questioned. Now, this is not to say that these tools will always make it through. In fact, based on our experience, some might decide to “confiscate” a random tool on a whim… Still, as far as we can surmise, they clearly fall under “approved”—at least according to this week’s TSA guidelines.

small multi-tools with Phillips and flat head screwdrivers

As far as actually using these tools. They came in very handy for tightening a few nuts, clipping wire zip ties, and even making a few small adjustments to some audio equipment. Each of our recommended tools has ample build quality to last for many years.

It is a safe bet that you can find several small-sized airplane-safe tools or multi-tools you can travel with. Just make sure you pick something with no blades. Also—since any tool you travel with risks getting confiscated—keep the good, expensive stuff for when you are home and on the ground!

Electricians and plumbers sometimes favor a tool bag , but auto enthusiasts may find that a tool chest makes better sense. For all-around DIYers and construction professionals, a portable tool box—one they can tote or wheel around a shop and onto a truck—is the most convenient, cost-effective option.

Some of today’s top tool manufacturers , such as DeWalt and Craftsman, make portable tool boxes designed to keep tools, cords, and accessories safely stowed but within reach. We wanted to know how durable—and how handy—these tool boxes really were. So we decided to test a wide array of sizes and types.

Ahead, learn what to look for when shopping for the best portable tool box and find out how the following models earned a spot in this lineup of the best tool boxes for a variety of situations.

Spoiler: Not all the tool boxes we tested made this list. The ones that didn’t meet our high standards can be found below under “Also Tested.”

  • BEST OVERALL: DeWalt DWST60436 ToughSystem 2.0 Rolling Tower
  • BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK: Big Red Torin 19-Inch Portable Steel Tool Box

The Best Portable Tool Box Options

How We Tested the Best Portable Tool Boxes

In our quest to find the best portable tool boxes available, we extensively researched nearly 50 models, analyzing their pros and cons, and from that list, we selected the above tool boxes to test.

We considered brand names—after all, who knows better what pros and DIYers need to care for their tools than a tool manufacturer, such as DeWalt or Milwaukee? Still, we didn’t automatically eliminate tool boxes from smaller or niche brands if they met our other criteria and came with good customer reviews.

In the actual testing phase, we examined each box to determine the quality of construction and design. We latched and unlatched the boxes repeatedly to see how smooth and secure they were. We noted problems and issues with how lids fit, and we added specific tests if the manufacturer made a claim. For example, when the tool-box manufacturer said the product was water-resistant, we closed it and sprayed it with our garden hose’s jet nozzle. If the manufacturer said the box was impact-resistant, we dropped it on concrete.

When maximum load capacity was listed, we filled the boxes with free weights to match the capacity and then carried it or rolled it around to see how well it functioned under the weight load. We analyzed the size and shape of the storage spaces so we could recommend the best usage.

During the tests, we awarded points for each tool box based on a rubric—the better they performed, the higher the scores they received. After testing, we added and averaged the points to create our lineup and to determine the best categories for each portable tool box.

The Best Portable Tool Box Options

Our Top Picks

The following products represent the tool boxes that excelled in our hands-on testing and earned a spot in this lineup. Not all of the models we tested made the cut, and readers can find why in the “Also Tested” section. Though purposes and overall designs of portable tool boxes differ, shoppers should be able to find the best portable tool box for their transportation and tool-storage needs among our recommendations.

We’re familiar with the quality of tools and accessories DeWalt puts out, so we weren’t surprised that this three-in-one tool-box combo took top honors in our lineup. The three individual boxes are made of rugged molded plastic. The bottom tool box is the largest, and it’s spacious enough to hold bigger items—we put in two circular saws and a reciprocating saw, and we still had room to spare.

All three boxes are 20 inches wide and measure 13.5 inches from front to back. The large base box is 15.5 inches high, while the middle-size box is 12 inches high, and the smallest box is just 7 inches high. The base box boasts 8-inch all-terrain wheels. Side latches on the smaller boxes snap securely to the other boxes to transport them as a single unit.

We liked the way we could push the bottom of the side latches to separate the boxes—a speedy and easy process. Each smaller box has convenient side handles and another handle in front for carrying. Interestingly, our measurements disagree with the manufacturer’s measurements, but we measured carefully and are confident ours are accurate.

DeWalt lists the boxes as IP65 rated, which means the seals will keep dust and water out. We tested the seals by spraying the closed and latched boxes with the jet nozzle on our garden hose, aiming the spray directly at the seals. When we opened the boxes, we were impressed to find the interiors of each of the three boxes were bone-dry! Very impressive.

To test the load capacity, we filled the three boxes with free weights that totaled 250 pounds, stacked and secured the boxes together, and then used the telescoping handle to pull the boxes around. The thick molded plastic wheels held just fine, even when we pulled this heavy load up an incline and over sand and gravel. However, if we had our druthers, we would wish for solid rubber wheels that offered longer-term durability.

Product Specs

  • Load capacity: 250 pounds
  • Weight (empty): 39 pounds
  • Material: Heavy-duty molded plastic, steel latches
  • Quality construction; IP65 rated for durability and long-term use
  • Watertight seals prevent dust and moisture from damaging any interior tools
  • Oversize 8-inch wheels are ideal for those that need to take their tools to job sites
  • Snap-in-place connection system keeps all compartments secure; ideal for transporting
  • Measurements are often misstated as advertised
  • Wheels are not solid rubber; may not be ideal for extreme use

Metal tool boxes like the Big Red Torin rely on a simple, timeless design that works, proving that a good tool box doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Despite its name, Big Red is a pretty small tool box. We measured it to be 19 inches from end to end, 7 inches high at the highest point of the lid, and 6 inches from front to back. It’s made of heavy-gauge metal with a bright-red baked-on finish and comes with a removable tray that fits inside. That’s a lot of value for a reasonable price.

The single steel latch on the front of the box is securely riveted and holds the lid snugly in place. The steel brackets for the top handle are also securely welded. Rather than one or two small lid hinges, the Big Red features a piano hinge that runs along the entire backside of the box—an upgrade that we felt added to its overall stability.

The manufacturer doesn’t list a maximum load capacity, but we filled the Big Red with 35 pounds of weight and were still able to lift it by its handle without the handle or latch failing. However, we noticed the latch was straining slightly, so we didn’t try to add more weight. Big Red is a well-made, affordable tool box for anyone who wants to store and carry smaller hand tools such as screwdrivers, socket wrenches, and the like.

  • Load capacity: Not listed (it held 35 pounds in our testing)
  • Weight (empty): 4.85 pounds
  • Material: Steel, molded plastic inner tray
  • Sturdy steel construction is ideal for long-term and versatile use
  • Durable bright-red enamel coating for a classic look
  • Piano hinge runs the entire length of the backside
  • Affordable compared to some other tool boxes available
  • A second latch would have added more lid stability

A tough box is great—but a tough one that keeps tools neat and easy to find is better. As with the company’s power tools, Milwaukee puts a lot of thoughtful design into its tool boxes, and we were impressed by the quality and usefulness of the Deep Organizer.

This shallow tool box—only 7 inches high—is made of heavy-duty molded plastic and comes with adjustable inner dividers that let us create various-size sections for storing small items. Additional measurements include box width at 19.7 inches and depth at 15.2 inches. The top lid features thick yet clear plastic, so we could easily see the various sections held before opening the lid.

The manufacturer lists the Deep Organizer as rated IP65, so we closed the box, latched it, and then sprayed it with the jet nozzle to test for leaks. The contents inside the tool box stayed dry. There was one downside, though: The way the individual compartments are sealed creates indentations on the clear box lid; this design flaw causes water to pool on the lid, so we had to tip the box over to dump the water before opening it.

The latches on the Deep Organizer are rugged, and they hold the lid on securely. Milwaukee says the tool box is designed to be impact-resistant, so we dropped it several times on concrete. Other than a few surface scuffs, it held firm—no cracks. Impressive.

The load capacity of this shallow tool box is 50 pounds, and it easily held that much weight. We’d guess it could probably hold even more, but keep in mind that this tool box is part of Milwaukee’s Packout series, so it can be connected to the larger Packout tool box we tested below. When combining tool boxes, it’s a good idea not to exceed load capacity to avoid putting undue weight on the lower box’s wheelbase.

Best Rolling

Dewalt dwst20880 multi-level workshop.

When we first inspected this DeWalt tool box, it took a few minutes to learn how to open it: The top lid lifts like any other tool box, but the bottom sections slide out. It took us even longer to figure out how to close it because it locks in the open position once open. Once we realized we needed to pull up the handle in the front while pushing the boxes together from the rear, we were in business. After that, opening and closing the box was a snap!

The thing that sets this multidrawer tool box apart from others is the ability to open all the boxes simultaneously without separating them and putting them in different spots. We liked the idea of having simultaneous access to larger tools in the base box, smaller tools in the middle box, and accessories in the top box.

The cantilever-style box is made of durable molded resin, but it isn’t quite as heavy-duty as the material on the DeWalt system that earned our Best Overall spot. This box weighs 21.4 pounds empty and comes with a load capacity of 88 pounds, making it well suited for stowing various hand tools, plumbing fittings, batteries, and more. The frame and wheels seem rugged, but we would recommend not overloading to keep from putting undue stress on the sliding cantilever mechanism.

This is not a watertight box, so we didn’t spray it with our hose. We did pull it over gravel, sand, and rough terrain, and it rolled smoothly, even when filled to its 88-pound capacity. We also pulled it up a flight of stairs, and it rolled up nicely, as a hand truck would. The steel latches, however, are just OK; they serve their purpose, but thicker metal would’ve been better. Though the sliding cantilever arms held up throughout our testing, we were concerned that if anything on this box broke, it would be them. We recommend this DeWalt to anyone who wants to transport a collection of lightweight tools and have access to all of them at once.

  • Load capacity: 88 pounds
  • Weight (empty): 21.4 pounds
  • Material: Resin, metal latches, metal sliding arms
  • All tool drawers accessible at the same time; suitable for DIYers as well as pros
  • Adjustable dividers in the center section for ample customization
  • Rolls easily over rough terrain for convenience and portability
  • Must master the technique for opening and closing
  • No watertight seal integrated into the design; may not be ideal for some users’ purposes
  • Lower weight capacity than competing models

Best for Mechanics

Craftsman 20-inch 3 drawer metal tool box.

Those who are looking for a handy portable tool box to stow a growing collection of sockets and wrenches need look no further than Craftsman’s chest-type model. It’s perfectly suited to the home mechanic. We consider the chest, which is 20.6 inches long by 9 inches wide by 13 inches high, to be a quality scaled-down version of the larger mechanic tool chests that often occupy a permanent spot in a garage.

It’s of similar quality, too, with a metal case and three smooth-sliding shallow drawers. Plus, the lid opens to reveal a fourth storage spot. Metal latches secure the top lid, and we found a place where we could use a padlock to thwart thieves. The bright-red enamel coating resists rust, and we were able to wipe off greasy fingerprints with a spritz of all-purpose cleaner and a soft rag.

The bottom three drawers kept sliding open while we carried the filled chest by its handle; some type of magnetic closure that kept them shut would have been great. Because this is a portable tool chest, we feel that users will most likely want to take it to a different location, so the drawers sliding open is a problem. The only other downside is the lack of nonslip drawer liners that come standard in many other mechanic tool boxes.

This is not a watertight tool chest, but most mechanic models aren’t, so we can’t fault it there. Craftsman doesn’t list a maximum load capacity, but we filled it with wrenches and sockets that weighed just over 30 pounds, and the handle held firm.

  • Load capacity: Not listed (We tested it with 30 pounds.)
  • Weight (empty) : 19 pounds
  • Material: Metal
  • Smooth-sliding tool drawers for long-term ease of use
  • Ability to lock the top section as needed for safe keeping
  • Non-rust surface wipes clean and lasts for years of use
  • Drawers tend to slide out when carrying
  • No nonslip drawer liners

Best for Power Tools

Ridgid 22-inch pro tool box.

This Ridgid portable tool box is relatively lightweight at 17 pounds, and it offers ample storage space that we found perfect for holding cordless drills, nail guns, and other small power tools that don’t fit well in shallower tool boxes. It also has a removable bracket that fits along the inner backside to hold devices with handles such as screwdrivers, shears, and pliers.

Ridgid’s heavy-duty 22-inch polypropylene resin tool box resists impact, and a rubber seal in the lid protects the interior contents and keeps dust and dirt out. Though it’s not IP rated, the manufacturer deems it “weather-resistant,” so we sprayed it with a jet of water. A few drips leaked in on one side, but the box would probably keep tools dry through a moderate rain shower. The telescoping handle and wheels made it a breeze to pull the box along rough terrain and sidewalks, and we could lift the lid completely off the box, making it easy to access the contents from all sides.

Ridgid’s 22-inch tool box holds 50 pounds of weight, and we loaded it to the max to test its limits. The box held firm, even when we tested its impact resistance by pushing it off an elevated patio to the concrete 18 inches below. This is one tough tool box, and it can be used as a base for other Ridgid modular tool boxes in the same series.

  • Weight (empty): 9.7 pounds
  • Material: Resin, metal locks
  • Impact-resistant construction is designed for heavy-duty usage and portability
  • Lockable design keeps items safe and prevents moisture and rust
  • Wheeled for portability; suitable for DIYers as well as professionals
  • Large storage area provides a lot of space given the small footprint
  • Not completely watertight; should not be kept in moist areas

Most Secure

Milwaukee packout rolling tool box.

Let’s face it: Tools are expensive, so keeping them safe from the elements and sticky fingers is essential. This Milwaukee rolling tool box is part of the manufacturer’s Packout series, and it can be used individually or with other containers in the series, such as the Deep Organizer we reviewed above.

We were impressed with the rugged design of this portable tool box. It features reinforced steel corners to protect the contents from hard bumps or drops, it’s IP65 rated to resist water and dust, and it comes with a metal-reinforced padlock point that we feel would deter all but the most determined thieves.

A standout on this rolling tool box is the 9-inch rubber wheels that allowed us to easily pull it over various surfaces, including deep gravel, sand, bumpy terrain, and concrete. It comes with a rugged 250-pound load capacity, so we filled it with 250 pounds of weight, pulled it around, sprayed it with the jet nozzle on the hose, and then pushed it off the raised patio and let it fall 18 inches to the concrete below. We found one scuff on an upper corner of the box but no other damage. The contents inside remained completely dry.

We also connected the Deep Organizer to the top of this base box, and it fit snugly and securely. Those looking for a single protective box, or a set of boxes, may find this Milwaukee series a serious contender.

  • Weight (empty): 23.37 pounds
  • Material: Heavy-duty resin, metal latches, metal reinforcement bars
  • Quality construction; IP65-rated for long-term use and durability
  • Holds an impressive 250 pounds worth of tools
  • Metal reinforcement bars help keep the unit’s shape
  • Watertight construction keeps all tools clean and rust-free
  • Pricey compared to some other tool boxes on this list

ALSO TESTED

Ganchun 17-Inch Three-Layer Plastic Tool Box

We really wanted to like Ganchun’s Three-Layer Portable Storage Case. When we chose the box for testing, we expected it to be light duty, so we weren’t looking for top-of-the-line molded polyethylene construction or a watertight seal. We simply wanted a tool box that would securely hold multiple small items.

The front latches on the Ganchun fit snugly, and we liked that, but when we opened the box and extended its three drawers, the box tipped over backward. That was disappointing but not a deal breaker since we figured we could fill the bottom drawer with the heaviest items and it would keep the box from tipping, which is what we did.

We filled the drawers with quilting accessories, including spools of thread, scissors, pin cushions, and other sewing items. Once full, it was challenging to extend the drawers smoothly—the weight caused the hinges to stick, resulting in the need to pull harder, which jerked the drawers and caused some of the items to spill out.

We filled the small snap-open compartments on the top of the lid with various straight pins, bobbins, and seam rippers. When the case is opened, the lid moves to an upside-down position. When we closed the case, all the items in the top compartments were mixed together—we had to separate them. Then, the plastic latch broke when we snapped the cover back in place. At that point, we eliminated the Ganchun from consideration.

Jump to Our Top Picks

What to consider when choosing a portable tool box.

Finding the best portable tool box depends on the intended use. A DIYer may want an easy-to-carry compact model for the garage, but a builder might need a large wheeled unit for easy transport. Here, you’ll learn about the factors and features to remember when comparing portable tool boxes. We tested quite a few tool-box types to get a good idea of the best models in a variety of categories.

Generally, portable tool boxes come in two types: those with carrying handles and those with wheels.

On a carrying box, the handle must attach securely to the body to support its weight when full. Traditional steel tool boxes often have thin handles that can get uncomfortable. Some modern models feature more ergonomic plastic and rubber handles—shoppers will want to make sure a thicker handle provides enough room to grab it with a gloved hand. Convenient foldable handles allow users to stack other items on top of the tool box when it’s not in use.

Rolling tool boxes generally have a larger capacity, which makes their wheels the most important feature. The wheels must support the full weight of the tool box when loaded. Solid plastic wheels are sometimes fragile and may be difficult to maneuver over uneven surfaces. Rubber tires are an upgrade—they help absorb impact and usually roll freely.

Material and Construction

Although a few wooden tool boxes are available, most sturdy tool boxes come in steel or some type of heavy-duty resin or plastic—materials that are strong enough to hold up to frequent home and jobsite use.

Steel is extremely tough and can withstand impact. It might dent, but it’s unlikely to break. Of course, steel weighs a lot more than other materials. Also, if the surface finish (typically, a powder coat) gets damaged, the box can rust.

Plastic tool boxes vary widely in quality, and inexpensive versions may be fragile. However, those made of molded polypropylene or structural foam (an injection-molded plastic) can rival steel in strength and durability. Some of these models also have metal reinforcement.

Seams, joints, and hinges—all potential weak points—warrant close inspection. Occasional maintenance of the box should help prevent problems. If users will be keeping the tool boxes outdoors in all types of weather, they’ll want to look for waterproof or water-resistant models.

Size and Storage Options

Bigger often isn’t better when it comes to a portable tool box: The larger the tool box, the harder it is to store and transport, so consider a tool box’s overall exterior dimensions (to know how much room it will take up at the site and in a truck) as well as the internal space—and how that is divided.

Organization options vary widely. Lift-out trays and containers add versatility, but the base models may not include these optional extras. Consider not only how existing tools will fit into the box but also whether the tool box has enough space for additional equipment the user may acquire later.

Though manufacturers’ specs don’t always include weight (load) capacity, this metric warrants consideration when it’s available. Too much weight can break or loosen the handles. Loaded to full capacity, the box may be too heavy to carry. If users need to take a lot of tools with them, they’ll want to consider a rolling model.

Compatibility

Sometimes, two or more portable tool boxes make a better setup than a single large one. Users may need a compact model for DIY essentials plus a wheeled version for garage or project tools. Other situations, work styles, and tool collections might warrant one box for hand tools and another for power tools.

Although a lot depends on individual preferences and needs, portable tool box manufacturers also produce modular systems to meet various needs. For example, a wheeled tool box may have an extendable handle that allows space for smaller units to stack on top.

If owners don’t want thieves to break into or walk off with their tool collections, they’ll want to take security seriously. Some portable tool boxes offer no protection, and bolting down a tool box makes it far less portable, so look for a model with space between the handles or latches for a padlock or cable lock. Also, keep in mind that steel typically makes for a more secure portable tool box than plastic.

In addition, consider whether the design allows the user to lock the tool box to an immovable object. Cable locks make a good security solution in this case, and owners can combine these flexible locks for extended reach. They can also look into tool-box alarms or small trackers to conceal inside.

The previous sections describe the important features of the best portable tool boxes for various needs, and our lineup lists the models that earned a spot in our lineup via their hands-on testing scores. Here, find additional answers to a few of the most common questions.

Q. How much do portable tool boxes weigh?

With so much variety in the types and sizes of portable tool boxes, weights vary widely as well. A basic tool box might weigh 3 or 4 pounds, and the larger ones top out at 20 pounds or more. Also consider the probable contents of the tool box because they could add a lot of weight.

Q. How do I organize a portable tool box?

Large, heavy items generally go on the bottom because it has the most space, and storing them at a low level also adds stability if it’s a rolling box. Many portable tool boxes have convenient trays and upper compartments for smaller items.

Q. How do I clean a portable tool box?

Most models can be wiped down with a damp cloth and a little all-purpose cleaner. Beware of abrasive cream cleansers that can scratch the surface of a tool box.

  • Capacity: Choosing a rolling toolbox or work cabinet can be a bit tricky especially if you’re just starting out. You want to make sure that you have enough room for your tool collection, but you also don’t want to buy something that’s going to take up more space than you need.
  • Portability: You should also keep mobility in mind as well. If you plan on taking your tool chest to another location, you’ll probably want to choose one of our options that have a lower center of gravity and chunkier wheels — these are much easier to roll over rough or uneven terrain.

How We Chose

As a former residential and commercial carpenter, I've spent hundreds of hours in woodshops where I designed, created, and assembled custom furniture pieces. I relied on quality rolling toolboxes to keep all my tools and accessories easily accessible. At Popular Mechanics , we've been reviewing tools and toolboxes like these for decades, too: Our own shop has a wall of them where we store everything we need for testing, developing projects, and putting together repair guides. We have a deep familiarity and preferences for every type of rolling tool chest and work cabinet. We used that experience to assemble this list of options, keeping in mind that different customers have different storage needs and are at different stages in their DIY careers. We’re confident that whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, you’ll find an option for you.

For more great tool storage options, check out our picks for the best garage shelving and wall cabinets .

Those short on garage space but still want a decent amount of tool storage might find just what they’re looking for in this Tankstorm model. We really appreciate the multifunctional design of this option, featuring side-mounted hooks for hanging storage, a handle for easy steering, and a side tray with convenient screwdriver holes built in.

Two of the four rolling casters are able to lock in place, preventing the unit from accidentally rolling around while you work. The pair of drawers allow quick access for your commonly used tools, and a locking lower cabinet is perfect for keeping larger power tools.

More: Keep All Your Tools Tidy With These Toolbox Organizers

Don’t be fooled by the small size of this Performance Tools model; this compact tool chest packs just as much functionality as larger options. We love its thick cushioned top—protected by heavy-duty vinyl—which provides a comfortable seat as you roll around the garage or workshop.

Its three storage drawers are 2.25 inches high, and a slotted storage tray on the rear of the unit sports 16 tool slots. Its sturdy metal construction is designed to support up to 350 total pounds of weight, and the magnetic trays keep your fasteners from rolling around your workspace.

Our favorite feature of this rolling toolbox is its 7-inch rubber tires, which are considerably more durable, and allow for better maneuverability than most competitors. Its removable bins are also really functional and make it easy to organize and access your fasteners, anchors, and other small hardware.

Instead of just a single large compartment for your bulky tools and equipment, a handy moveable divider also allows you to customize it to fit your specific items.

Its plastic components won’t be durable enough for a high-production workshop, but for the occasional DIY-er, this could be a great choice.

Designed to separate into two boxes, this model allows you to detach and carry just the tools you need, and leave the rest behind. Or, if you really want to travel light, you can just fill up the tool tray with the necessities.

Twenty-four total storage compartments help keep your hardware organized, and the clear lids allow you to take a quick inventory without opening it up.

It’s not the cheapest option out there, but if you’re in the market for a rugged rolling tool chest that can stand up to regular abuse and also keep your tools safe and secure, this model might be worth the investment.

The impressive 1,500-pound load rating means that you can fill this cabinet with an impressive amount of tools, and even at that weight, the 2-inch-wide casters will still be able to swivel and turn effectively. The soft-close slides on its six drawers are a nice touch, adding a high-end feel to your cabinet and eliminating those loud slams and crashes.

We appreciate the versatility of this Goplus model, which allows you to remove the lower drawers and use them as a standalone toolbox — perfect for when you need to be more mobile than the whole unit would otherwise allow. You could even place the toolbox on the top of the chest and use the open space below for storing extra large items.

A side-mounted handle also allows you to easily push and pull it around your shop, and the glossy finish minimizes rust and corrosion.

The chunky 7-inch wheels and extendable handle of this DeWalt toolbox make it well-suited for rolling over uneven and rocky terrain. This handle also collapses down for easy storage when you’ve reached your destination.

This box won’t provide the variety of drawers like other products, but its 12-inch depth will be convenient for storing large and bulky power tools and equipment. Plus, since it’s compatible with other members of the DeWalt TSTAK family, you can easily connect and combine it with a variety of storage options.

If you’ve got the budget for it, this Seville unit and its high-end functionality could be a great option. The 3/4-inch solid wood top allows it to double as a work surface, and the lockable casters keep it from rolling around as you work.

We’re also big fans of the corner bumpers on the bottom of the unit, which not only protect its corners from damage, but anything else it might bump up against as you wheel it around. There is some assembly required through, so keep that in mind.

We’re big fans of cart-style tool chests, and this GoPlus unit is a great example of why: Its open base makes it convenient to grab whatever you need without opening drawers and doors, and you can use it to store and transport long or bulky items that wouldn’t fit if the base were enclosed.

This model also features a ton of functionality, with a slide-open top that allows you to continue using it as a work surface while accessing the area inside, and two wide drawers — perfect for keeping long-handled automotive tools.

Considering more than 50 million Americans suffer from seasonal and environmental allergies, air purifiers are on our list of continuously tested products at the Good Housekeeping Institute , along with other IAQ (short for "indoor air quality") essentials, like vacuum cleaners , dehumidifiers and humidifiers . Our experts in the Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab have reviewed 50 air purifiers in the last five years. For this report, our experts looked for models that are ideal for allergy sufferers, thanks to features like a pre-filter (for capturing airborne dust and pet hair) and true HEPA filtration (to snag smaller particulates, like pollen and dander). The following six air purifiers rose above the competition.

Following our top picks, you'll find more information on how we test air purifiers, as well as expert tips for finding the best model for your home. Be sure to check out other IAQ-friendly buying guides, including our best air purifier and humidifier combo units , best vacuums for pet hair and a primer on whole-house air cleaners .

An air purifier with serious filtration is needed to snag all the tiny allergens floating through indoor air. Blueair's 311i+ Max cleaned up in our rigorous Lab tests, thanks to its advanced multi-level protection against contaminants of all sizes — not just dander and pet hair, but also cooking fumes, dust mites and pollen. "It was exceptionally fast at clearing the air in our test chamber, plus it was among the quietest models, even on its higher fan speeds," says Good Housekeeping Institute data engineer Nikolas Greenwald , who tested many of the air purifiers for this report. The device is also certified by Quiet Mark , an outside organization that evaluates consumer products for sound.

The 311i+ Max's washable fabric pre-filter that encases the device (available in five colors) captures fur, dust and other large particles. Next, a true HEPA one for smaller particles down to .1 micron, the smallest of all tested air purifiers. That's enough to clear up to 99.97% of pet-generated pollutants across 465 square feet in under 13 minutes. "It's perfect for a family room or studio apartment," says Greenwald, adding that "larger spaces will be better served by one of our more powerful top picks." Our testers were also impressed by the 311+Max's connectivity and smartphone app, which lets you monitor your home's air quality remotely. You can also program the air purifier to kick into standby mode when you leave the house and turn on when you're close to returning.

Allergy sufferers often need more than one air purifier to manage air quality throughout the house: one for the bedroom, one for the kitchen and so on. Shoppers on a tight budget can buy three or four of these GermGuardian's for the price of a single model from a premium brand, without sacrificing much in the way of performance.

The purifier's true HEPA filter can filter particles down to the size of 0.1 microns. It also features an activated carbon filter, which removes bad odors and some harmful chemicals through the process of adsorption. Just note that if you live in a hot or humid climate, you won't reap the full benefits here as chemical adsorption is less effective when temperature and air moisture content is high.

Though we didn't get to run our intensive air quality tests of this model in the Lab, our testers put it through the wringer with at-home road tests in New York City during several air-quality alerts. One tester remarked that after just one hour of operation, "the room felt normal and livable." Another tester found that it could be relatively noisy at the maximum setting, so those seeking ultra-quiet purification should consider our top pick instead.

Air purifiers tend to be more about function than form. That's what we like about the MinusA2 from RabbitAir. First and foremost, it does a darn good job of pulling a slew of pollutants from the air, thanks to its multiple levels of filtration. On top of that superb performance, it features a sleek, streamlined design. “It’s the first unit we’ve had in the Lab for testing that can be mounted to the wall," explains Greenwald. "The unit installed easily in our tests, so it should save floor space in your home, especially compared with the largest standing models, which can get quite bulky.”

The MinusA2's multi-stage filtration includes the all-important true HEPA filter, rated to capture 99% of particulates less than 0.1 microns in size. A pre-filter snags pet hair and other larger allergens, while its activated carbon filter neutralizes odors. RabbitAir is unique in that it also lets you choose a customizable filter based on the most prevalent pollutants in the home. If dander is your main trigger, the pet allergy filter is probably the best option. If you're allergic to mold spores, you might opt for the germ defense filter.

You're paying a premium for the MinusA2, but in addition to the stellar performance, it is also living up to its ultra-quiet claim, especially in silent mode, when its fan is literally whisper-quiet; even on the highest "turbo" setting, the fan only gets up to around 49 decibels, or as loud as a soft conversation.

One important caveat: The MinusA2 has an ionization setting, which our experts don't recommend with any air purifier, since ionizers can release small amounts of ozone (an irritant that can exacerbate existing respiratory conditions) and the science on ionizer efficacy and safety is still inconclusive. While we prefer purifiers without any ionization mode, at least with the MinusA2 the process for turning it off is straightforward and there is an indicator light on the face of the unit that clearly indicates if it's in active ion mode.

Honeywell is an established brand in the home comfort space, with picks from our experts across many product categories, from evaporative coolers to whole-house humidifiers . Our experts tapped this air purifier in part because it comes in five different sizes that target rooms ranging from small to extra large . That makes it a good model line for households with multiple allergy sufferers. Each purifier uses a pre-filter and a true HEPA filter to snag contaminants down to .3 micron. That's not the smallest capture rate we've seen in our tests, but it will handle many types of allergens, especially those associated with pets.

The large-sized model shown here claims to clean the air as often as five times an hour and remove up to 99.97% of airborne particles. We also like the relatively low cost of the replacement filter, which you'll appreciate if you need to run more than one air purifier at the same time, or if there's high-level pollution in the home, say from a heavy-shedding dog or cat.

Our experts say this Coway is one of the best air purifiers for allergy sufferers who live in city apartments and other smaller residences. "It challenged the top-ranking BlueAir for performance, though fell short of the winner's circle because of its less-than-average coverage area," says Greenwald. (It quickly cleans 361 square feet versus the 465 square feet of the Blue Pure.) The Airmega's four-stage filtration system includes an activated-carbon layer that’s designed to capture odors, including those from pets. Our testers also like the easy-to-clean pre-filter, which captures large particulates before they reach the inner HEPA filters. Indicator lights give the heads up when filters need to be cleaned or replaced.

Want an air purifier that looks as good as it performs? Coway recently launched a limited edition of its 250 series, the Airmega 250 Art , which lets you choose from a trio of decorative front panels by contemporary artist Haily Hills. In preliminary Lab tests, the 250 Art performed similarly to its 200 brand mate and boasts a larger coverage area of 930 square feet.

Got a lot of house and bad allergies? The 751i Air Purifier combines advanced filtration technology with a powerful fan for massive cleaning power across 1,300 square feet. It's the only other model in our round-up (along with the Blue Pure 211) that can capture contaminants down to .1 microns. Not for nothing, t his is also one of the better-looking models to pass through our Labs, with its sleek front panel available in six colors. Despite its robust cleaning power, it's fairly quiet; even at its top fan speed, it's only as loud as the sound of soft music playing in the background.

The combination of peak performance and high design doesn't come cheap: Besides the steep upfront price, filter replacement costs are several times that of other models. One other note: Our safety experts point out that the Alen has an optional ionization setting designed to combat even more pollutants. We don’t recommend this feature on any air purifier since it can produce ozone, a lung irritant. But even without the use of the ionization setting, the Alen should capture plenty of allergens, while looking good in the process.

Best budget air purifier for allergies Dreo Macro Pro

Dreo Macro Pro Air Purifier

The well-priced Dreo Macro Pro uses three-stage filtration — a fabric pre-filter, a true HEPA filter and an odor-neutralizing carbon filter. In extensive home testing that took place over several weeks, the Dreo effectively vanquished odors as well as stale air. Plus, its compact design won’t get in the way in smaller spaces. “It seems to have really freshened up the air in our basement apartment where we have a dog and lots of dust,” noted a tester. It missed our picks list because it wasn't the most intuitive air purifier in our tests, so non-techies might find it frustrating, at least at first. Note: It is currently out of stock across retailers.

Most innovative air purifier for allergies

Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde

Though it's not exactly inexpensive, this Dyson air purifier is loaded with innovations that might make it worth the splurge. The machine's unique catalytic filter combines with true HEPA filtration to vanquish contaminants down to .3 microns. It's also the only model from our tests that claims to vanquish formaldehyde and other VOCs. But besides being expensive, the air purifier also takes up a lot of space, standing a full three feet tall. If neither of those factors are deal breakers, the Dyson Humidify + Cool Formaldehyde won’t disappoint when it comes to clearing your home's air of a range of allergens.

A quiet air purifier for allergies

Levoit Core 400S Smart True HEPA Air Purifier

This Levoit air purifier stood out to our testers for its incredibly quiet operating at just 24 dB, which you’ll appreciate if it’s stationed in your bedroom. (One of our testers has been running the unit for several months in her home and describes the light hum as quite peaceful at night.) The unit’s three-stage filtration, including a true HEPA filter, helps it capture airborne pollutants down to .3 microns in rooms up to approximately 400 square feet . We also liked its built-in precision laser sensor, which accurately monitors particles in the room and auto-adjusts fan speeds as needed.

How we choose the best air purifiers for allergies

a new batch of air purifiers is ready for testing by experts at the good housekeeping institute

Product experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute's Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab keep constant tabs on the air purifier market to identify models that you’re most likely to find at stores and online. We also send team members to trade shows and industry events, like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to stay on top of the latest innovations in indoor air quality. Models that come into the Lab for hands-on testing are generally from brands that have performed the best and proved the most reliable through more than a decade of air purifier testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute. We also consider newer brands with unique features or innovations.

a product tester evaluates the ease of use of an air purifiers digital controls

Testing begins with an extensive review of technical data, including claimed coverage area, type of filtration and allergy-fighting add-ons. We also read through user manuals to assess ease of set-up and operation. Controlled Lab tests are designed to measure an air purifier's ability to capture specific contaminants, such as smoke and other VOCs (volatile organic compounds) . We also send air purifiers into the homes of consumer testers, which lets us evaluate how they perform in real-world conditions (i.e. homes with pets or poor ventilation). Our consumer testers measure factors like ease of set-up, intuitiveness of controls and how easy it is to locate and replace the filter (or clean it, when applicable). Following the combined 50-plus hours of data review, Lab testing and at-home evaluations, we arrived at our list of expert-approved air purifiers for allergy sufferers.

What to look for when shopping for the best air purifier for allergies

line break

To find the perfect air purifier for your home, consider the following factors:

✔️ Coverage area: Manufacturers typically list how much square footage a purifier is designed to cover. You might see multiple areas listed, say one for the coverage provided in one hour and another for the coverage provided in five hours. We recommend going by the lower number since you'll likely want a device that delivers quick purification.

✔️ Filtration: Most top-performing air purifiers use mechanical filters with a dense web of fine fibers that trap particles from the air as it is pushed through by a fan.

  • True HEPA filters use a very fine mesh certified to capture 99.97% of particles measuring at least 0.3 microns (and in some cases down to 0.1 microns) in diameter. Our bottom line advice is that the best cleaning power comes from a true HEPA filter.
  • "HEPA-like" filters have not been certified to meet that standard. Some air purifiers also have a pre-filter designed to capture dust and other larger particulates. Our experts like this feature.
  • Activated carbon filters are designed to neutralize odors from pet, smoke and other noxious sources. They don't reduce allergens, per se, but they're a worthwhile feature, since allergens and odors tend to go hand in hand.
  • Ultraviolet light is another feature found on higher-end air purifiers. Brands say it is effective at zapping airborne germs and viruses. The claim is difficult to test, so ultraviolet is not something we recommend, though there's no perceivable downside (unlike purifiers that use ionization, since the technology can release ozone, a known lung irritant).

✔️ Filter replacement cost: In addition to the upfront cost of an air purifier, you need to think about how much it will cost to operate. Replacement costs tend to be higher with air purifiers that use multiple filters, which is why our experts say it's important to match the air purifier to your needs, so you're not spending more than you need to. ✔️ CADR: Short for "clean air delivery rate," CADR is an industry measure of how much clean air the purifier produces in a given test environment for various pollutants; it is typically reported in cubic feet per minute. The rule of thumb is that the CADR should be at least two thirds of the area that the air purifier will be cleaning. So if your room is 300 square feet, look for a CADR of 200 or higher. Not all manufacturers list CADR, but we list it with the specs in our product reviews for those that do.

Where is the best place to put an air purifier?

a product tetser uses a sound meter to evaluate noise levels produced by an air purifier

Place air purifiers as close as possible to the source of the problem. In the kitchen, this usually means close to the cooktop, where the purifier will help capture odors and fumes. It's also a good idea to keep an air purifier in the bedroom, close to the bed, where it will filter out contaminants from the air you breathe while you sleep. Some testers like the "white noise" effect of an air purifier's fan, but if you're sensitive to sound, look for a model with quiet operation, like the top-rated Blueair. We use a sound meter (pictured) to perform this assessment.

As for physical placement, try to position air purifiers away from walls and other objects that could impede airflow. The more circulation the better, to allow your purifiers to pull in as much contaminated air as possible.
