Tipperary Tourism - Welcome to Tipperary Tourism

The Trip To Tipp

‘féile was special, it was iconic, it was our woodstock’.

It was the year that Nelson Mandela was released from prison, Germany was reunified after the fall of the Berlin Wall and a computer whizz called Tim Berners-Lee was registering something new called the World Wide Web.

It was also the year that changed everything when it came to live music and festivals in Ireland. It was 1990 when Féile first got under way and the Irish summer would never be the same.

Féile ushered in the idea of seeing multiple acts over the course of a weekend. It created the notion of a destination event – one that you wanted to attend before you even knew who was on the line-up – and it sowed the seeds for the likes of current Irish music festivals including Electric Picnic and Longitude.

Bring your own tent and find hygiene where you can. Féile was different and for an entire generation, the words ‘Trip to Tipp’ would be forever etched into their memories.

Changing Times

Féile was originally proposed as a means of paying back the €1 million plus cost of upgrading Semple Stadium in Thurles, Co Tipperary, to accommodate the 1984 Centenary All-Ireland Hurling Final.

The church didn’t like it, the local Gaelic sportsmen didn’t like it, the young farmers didn’t like it, and if this had been 1950s Ireland, the whole idea would have been shelved. However, it was 1990, and the country was changing.

The Tipperary County Board GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) felt brave enough to proceed with the weekend-long music festival in Semple Stadium.

Such was the success of the first Trip to Tipp that artists from all over the world – including INXS, Iggy Pop, Simply Red, Nanci Griffith, Bryan Adams, The Cranberries, Elvis Costello and Bjork – were clamouring to play Thurles. It seemed, for a time, that Féile might become Europe’s top music event.

However, Tipperary County Board decided not to continue as a concert promoter and, in 1995, Féile moved to Cork – but it wasn’t quite the same.

After a final one-day Thurles concert in 1997, the event dropped from the musical calendar altogether. It looked like the Trip to Tipp, after an all-too-brief moment in the sun, was gone forever.

Féile Revival

Fast forward 21 years…

Tom Dunne, broadcaster and frontman of Irish rock band Something Happens, who played the very first Féile in 1990, was invited to organise and curate a one-off one-day revival of the festival, under the name Féile Classical, in the Semple Stadium in September 2018.

He brought together a selection of Irish acts from the 1990s glory days, with The Stunning, Hothouse Flowers, An Emotional Fish, The 4 of Us, and The Frank and Walters, all taking to the stage. Dunne said: “Féile was special, it was iconic, it was our Woodstock and Féile Classical will be an even bigger, better, louder explosion of the best of those days and so much more.”

The event was very different to the Trip To Tipp of the ’90s – fully seated, with luxuries like a choice of clean toilets, gourmet vegan food stalls, and a selection of pop-up gin and Prosecco bars – a far cry from ham sandwiches and slabs of beer from the local convenience store. What it shared was its success and the obvious love from its audience.

So much so that it’s back in 2019. No longer a one-day event called Féile Classical, now it’s the Tipp Classical 2019 weekend (September 20/21) – which might as well be the Trip to Tipp, or close enough for jazz, in any case.

The line-up includes The Stunning, The Sultans of Ping, The Frank and Walters, Therapy? and Wendy James of Transvision Vamp. As Dunne said: “The Trip to Tipp is back and it needs to stay.”

Festival line-up

The Tipp Classical 2019 weekend is just one of many excellent festivals and events to be enjoyed throughout Tipperary.

The Clonmel Junction Festival (3-9 July) features an exciting new cabaret venue, some pop-up art installations in the heart of the town, a host of music and theatre shows, and lots of ways to get involved either as a spectator or performer.

There’s fun and nostalgia aplenty at It’s a Long Way To Tipperary (14-15 July), during which Tipperary town is transported back to the 19th Century through a mix of beautiful vintage cars and clothing, horses and carts, and traditional music, song and dance.

The Cashel Arts Festival (19-22 September) uses the town’s heritage sites, including the ancient and iconic Rock of Cashel, as dramatic backdrops to a fine selection of contemporary arts events. Take your pick from music, dance, visual arts, film, theatre, workshops, family events and literature events.

Some of Ireland’s best amateur musical theatre groups are showcased at the Carrick Music Theatre Festival in Carrick-on-Suir (4-6 November), while Clonmel Applefest (27-29 September) brings the town’s medieval heart to life with a celebration of its industrial and agricultural heritage. Enjoy a wide range of events around all things apple, food and biodiversity – including craft activities, apple pressing, delicious local foods, storytelling, talks and walks, tastings and a community street feast.

Also celebrating the bounty of Tipperary’s rich and fertile lands is A Taste of Lough Derg , a series of food events around the towns and villages of the Lough Derg Lakelands running from June to September.

Festival Details

Following the success of Féile Classical last year, The Trip To Tipp is becoming a weekender next September, with a host of ’90s and contemporary Irish acts taking to the stage each night.

Announcing Trip Classical event curator Tom Dunne says “ I was humbled to have been part of something so special as what took place in Thurles, it was remarkable.

“When each of the bands got back to home to normality, the feeling just stayed with us, we kept in touch swapping stories and having the craic about who’s set was the best, the energy was still with us, the conclusion was that the buzz of the weekend was far too special to be a once off.

“The Trip to Tipp is back and it needs to stay, I got in touch with CWB.ie and they secured the dates for 2019! Ken Rice and the ICO are on board to create some magic and our first announcement for 2019 is Sultans of Ping – a true cult band of the 90s, along with Mundy, The Frank and Walters and many others – it’s going to be all of the magic of this September and a hell of a lot more!”

As well as the well-known acts on offer Tipp Classical also has a selection of curated events on offer including:

THE TIPP TOP Hosted By Jerry Fish & Friends

He played the main stage last year with the reunited An Emotional Fish, he is an incredible showman, hearty starter and all-round mischief maker Jerry Fish returns to Thurles this time hosting and performing at our Tipp Top. This year he will curate the Tipp Big Top with a selection of classic bands, weird and wonderful entertainers and all of the mayhem which has made him a festival favourite right across Europe.

Micky Mac and Will Leahy will return to the decks this year and the utterly charming Jerry Fish will host the Tipp Top all weekend with wild and wonderful circus acts, amazing bands and loads of surprises.

A CELEBRATION OF THIN LIZZY’S LIVE & DANGEROUS

Feat. the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Brian Downey’s Alive & Dangerous, and a host of soon-to-be-announced special guests…

Thin Lizzy’s ‘Live and Dangerous’ album is one of the most iconic live albums ever recorded. Conductor Ken Rice and the Irish Chamber Orchestra are delighted to present their interpretation of these rock and roll classics at Tipp Classical 2019,  featuring Original Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey who will bring his live band Alive & Dangerous and a host of very special guests who will join the band onstage in Thurles for what promises to be a very special celebration of the legacy of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy.

THE MUSIC SHANE MACGOWAN

Feat. the Irish Chamber Orchestra and soon-to-be-announced special guests…

Shane MacGowan, avid Tipperary hurling supporter, iconic musician, and one of the world’s greatest songwriters, resides a mere minutes from Semple Stadium. Therefore, to celebrate his legendary songbook, we are delighted that the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Shane are collaborating with a host of guests for one very special performance on the pitch at Semple stadium for one night only.

TRIBAL TALKS Hosted by John Meagher, Irish Independent

The Music & Sport Conversations life from The Dome will return, like many the pre-match tactic this year’s squad of speakers won’t be revealed until much closer to the date! But we can reveal that Dustin the Turkey will be back to wreak havoc on the Tribal Talks, the main stage and the town of Thurles!

Clarence Thomas formally discloses trips with GOP donor as Supreme Court justices file new financial reports

By Melissa Quinn

Updated on: June 7, 2024 / 7:29 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington —  Justice Clarence Thomas has formally disclosed two trips he took with Republican megadonor Harlan Crow in 2019, according to his financial disclosure report for 2023 that was publicly released Friday.

The report , which was filed by Thomas on May 15, included an amendment to his disclosure form for 2019 to list two trips he took with Crow in July of that year. The first, to Bali, lists Thomas as a guest of Harlan and Kathy Crow. The justice reported receiving food and lodging at a hotel.

The second trip, to Monte Rio, California, across three days in July 2019, again lists Thomas as a guest of Crow's. He said he received food and lodging at a private club.

The information was "inadvertently omitted at the time of filing," according to Thomas' latest annual disclosure form. It notes that the justice "sought and received guidance from his accountant and ethics counsel" when preparing his report for 2023.

The financial disclosure reports for eight of the nine sitting justices were released to the public Friday. Justice Samuel Alito requested and received a 90-day extension to file his disclosure, according to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.

Supreme Court justices' financial disclosures

Supreme Court justices pose for an official portrait on Friday, Oct 7, 2022, in Washington, D.C.

The disclosures show that Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson received four concert tickets from singer Beyoncé, valued at $3,711. She also received artwork for her chambers valued at $10,000 and $2,500. Thomas' report states that he received two photo albums worth $2,000.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh did not receive any gifts last year, according to their reports.

Several of the justices received book royalties and income from other projects. Sotomayor, for example, raked in more than $86,000 in royalties from publisher Penguin Random House and just under $2,000 from a production company for appearing on the animated PBS show "Alma's Way."

Jackson, meanwhile, received a book advance of more than $893,000 from Penguin Random House, paid through KayPac LLC, of which her report lists her as the "sole member." Her husband started the company in 2022, according to the group Fix the Court , which advocates for more transparency at the Supreme Court.

Gorsuch reported $312 in royalties from Princeton University Press and $250,000 in royalty income from HarperCollins, according to his disclosure. Kavanaugh's disclosure shows he brought in $340,000 in book royalties from Javelin Group/Regnery Publishing.

Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett received teaching income in 2023, their reports show.

Thomas remains an honorary member of the board of directors for the Horatio Alger Association, and Sotomayor listed her position as governing director of iCivics, an organization started by the late Justice Sandra Day O'Connor that promotes civics education in schools. Kavanaugh served as a coach for a girls basketball team, according to his disclosure report.

The reports are submitted annually to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts and reflect a justice's outside positions, income, reimbursements, gifts and investments for the prior calendar year. The financial disclosures have generated renewed interest in the wake of reporting by the news outlet ProPublica last year detailing the trips Thomas accepted from Crow — including to Bali and the private club in California — and real estate dealings between the two, which had not been listed in the justice's earlier reports.

Thomas had said last year he did not believe he had to disclose the travel and pledged to comply with guidelines about personal hospitality issued last year by the Judicial Conference, the policymaking body for the federal courts. The justice's report for 2022 listed flights Thomas took aboard Crow's private plane, as well as lodging at his property in the Adirondacks. Thomas also provided details about a 2014 real estate transaction with Crow that ProPublica revealed.

His report for 2023 did not include any reimbursements for lodging, transportation, food or entertainment.

The revelations about Thomas' relationship with Crow, a Texas real estate developer, sparked a political firestorm over the ethics practices at the Supreme Court and prompted calls for the nation's highest court to adopt a binding code of conduct.

The Senate Judiciary Committee launched an investigation into the issue and advanced legislation that would require the Supreme Court to adopt an enforceable ethics code. Committee Democrats also authorized subpoenas to Crow and Leonard Leo, a conservative judicial activist. The subpoena to Leo was issued in April, and he refused to comply . A spokesman for Crow said he did not receive one.

The Supreme Court adopted a formal code of conduct in November, though it did not include a mechanism for enforcement.

The court's unilateral action has done little to stem the scrutiny of the justices. Controversy erupted last month over two flags that were displayed outside of Alito's homes in Virginia and New Jersey. The first, an upside down American flag, was seen outside Alito's Virginia residence in early January 2021. The second, an "Appeal to Heaven" flag, was displayed outside his New Jersey vacation home in the summer of 2023.

Alito rejected calls from congressional Democrats from two cases involving former President Donald Trump and said he was not involved in the displays. He said the flags were flown by his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, and neither of them knew their meanings. Both types were carried by rioters who breached the  U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021 , and have become associated with the "Stop the Steal" movement.

Customer reviews

WorldTrips has a rating of 4.27 stars out of 5 on Squaremouth, based on 428 reviews of policies purchased through the travel insurance comparison site since 2008.

Heidi’s expert take:   “WorldTrips offers primary coverage for emergency medical expense and for baggage damage or loss. This means the insurer will pay for your claim first and then seek recovery from any responsible third party, such as your health insurance provider, airline or homeowners insurance company (if your belongings are stolen). Travel insurance with secondary medical coverage might be cheaper, but then you’d have to file claims with third parties yourself, before you could turn to your travel insurance for help.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

Heidi’s expert take:   “If you’re looking for a  budget travel insurance policy , Go Ready Choice may fit the bill. It has comparably low coverage limits, but if you have health insurance that will cover you on your trip, its $50,000 in secondary medical coverage may be sufficient.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

Heidi’s expert take:   “If you’re traveling with kids, a Travelex policy will cover them, too. The number of children you can add to your policy is unlimited and they’ll get travel protection at no additional cost.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

Best travel insurance for add-on coverage options

AIG

Travel Guard Preferred from AIG allows you to customize your policy with a host of available upgrades, making it the best traveler insurance for add-on options . These include “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage , rental vehicle damage coverage and bundles that offer additional benefits for adventure sports, travel inconvenience, quarantine, pets, security and weddings.

There’s also a medical bundle that increases the travel medical benefit to $100,000 and emergency evacuation to $1 million. This is a good option if you’re looking for foreign travel health insurance.

See our full AIG travel insurance review .

  • Bundle upgrades allow you to customize your travel insurance policy.
  • Emergency medical and evacuation limits can be doubled with optional upgrade.
  • Base travel insurance policy has relatively low medical limits.
  • $300 baggage delay benefit requires a 12-hour delay.
  • Optional CFAR upgrade only reimburses up to 50% of trip cost.
Heidi’s expert take: “You can add riders to your AIG travel insurance policy to maximize your coverage. Choose from these bundles: adventure sports, medical, pet, quarantine, security and wedding. You may also want to add “cancel for any reason” coverage and rental vehicle damage coverage.”  Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

Best travel insurance for cruise itinerary changes

Nationwide

Nationwide’s Choice Cruise is good travel insurance for cruises . It has a $500 per person benefit if a cruise itinerary change causes you to miss a prepaid excursion.

Choice Cruise also has a missed connections benefit of $1,500 per person after only a 3-hour delay when you’re taking a cruise or tour. But note that this coverage is secondary coverage to any compensation provided by a common carrier.

See our full Nationwide travel insurance review .

  • Benefits for cruise itinerary changes, ship-based mechanical breakdowns and covered shipboard service disruptions.
  • Non-medical evacuation benefit of $25,000 per person.
  • Missed connection coverage of $1,500 per person for tours and cruises, after a 3-hour delay.
  • Baggage loss benefits of $2,500 per person.
  • Travel medical coverage is secondary.
  • Trip cancellation benefit for losing your job requires three years of continuous employment.
  • No “cancel for any reason” upgrade available.

Nationwide has a rating of 4.02 stars out of 5 on Squaremouth, based on 570 reviews of policies purchased on the travel insurance comparison site since 2018.

Heidi’s expert take: “This plan has protections for cruisers when it comes to prepaid expenses. But its emergency medical coverage is secondary, which means you’d have to file medical claims with your health insurance company first. Since U.S. health insurance won’t help you at sea, you may want to look for cruise travel insurance with primary medical coverage instead.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

Compare the best travel insurance plans

Travel Insured International

Via Compare Coverage’s website

TravelSafe

Heidi’s expert take: “Here are my tips on how to buy travel insurance that gets you the most coverage for the lowest price: Buy early . Getting travel insurance within two weeks of making your first trip deposit may qualify you for coverage of pre-existing medical conditions, and it won’t cost you any extra.  Look for primary emergency medical coverage . If you buy a plan with secondary coverage, you’ll have to file a claim with your health insurance first, even if you know it will be denied.  Don’t overinsure . Calculate the value of only your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses that are not already covered by other insurance (like credit card travel insurance or health insurance, if your coverage extends to where you are traveling). Even if this value is $0, you can still buy travel insurance for the travel medical insurance benefits, and you’ll only be paying for the insurance you need.  Understand exclusions . If you are planning to go scuba diving, for instance, make sure this adventure activity is not excluded from a policy’s coverage. If so, you may need to pay for a rider or shop for another plan that offers the coverage you need.” Heidi Gollub, Managing Editor of Insurance, USA TODAY Blueprint

How much is travel insurance?

The average cost of travel insurance is 5% to 6% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs .

How much you pay for travel insurance will depend on:

  • The cost of your trip.
  • Your destination.
  • The length of your trip.
  • The ages of travelers being insured.
  • Your state of residence.
  • The travel insurance policy you choose.
  • The total coverage amounts in your policy.
  • Any travel insurance add-ons you select.

How much travel insurance should I buy?

Travel insurance companies typically offer several plans with varying maximum limits. The higher the coverage limits, the more you’ll pay for travel insurance.

Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison site, recommends the following coverage limits for international travel:

  • Emergency medical coverage: At least $50,000.
  • Medical evacuation coverage: At least $100,000.

If you’re going on a cruise, or to a remote location, Squaremouth recommends:

  • Emergency medical coverage: At least $100,000.
  • Medical evacuation coverage: At least $250,000.

When evaluating travel insurance plans, our team of insurance analysts considered the best medical travel insurance policies to have at least $250,000 in emergency medical coverage and at least $500,000 in medical evacuation coverage.

When should I buy travel insurance?

The best time to buy travel insurance is within two weeks of making your first nonrefundable travel payment, whether it’s for a plane ticket, hotel stay, cruise or excursion.

Travel insurance costs the same whether you buy it early or last minute, and buying it early has added benefits:

  • You may be able to add on “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage , an upgrade that is typically only available for a limited time after you’ve started paying for your trip.
  • You may qualify for a pre-existing medical conditions exclusion waiver, meaning your pre-existing conditions will be covered by travel insurance. This waiver is generally added to your policy automatically, provided you buy the travel insurance within a certain window after your first trip deposit.
  • You will be covered over a longer period of time for unforeseen events that could cause you to cancel your trip, such as medical emergencies, inclement weather and natural disasters.
Expert tip: You can buy travel insurance up to the day before you leave on your trip, but waiting may cost you the opportunity to qualify for a pre-existing conditions exclusion waiver or to buy a “cancel for any reason” upgrade.

Where can I buy travel insurance?

You can buy a travel insurance plan:

  • Online. Visit a travel insurance company’s website to buy a policy directly or use a comparison website like Squaremouth or Travelinsurance.com to see your options and compare plans. You may also be able to purchase travel insurance online through an airline, cruise, hotel, rental car company or other provider you book a ticket with.
  • In person. A travel agent or insurance agent may be able to assist you in buying travel insurance.

Best travel insurance FAQs

According to our analysis, WorldTrips has the best trip insurance. Two of its plans — Atlas Journey Explore and Atlas Journey Elevate — get 5 stars in our rating.

The best travel insurance policy for you will depend on what type of coverage you need. With so many different policies and carriers, the policy that was best for your friend’s trip to California might not be ideal for your trip to Japan. If you’re looking for the best travel insurance for international travel, you may be willing to pay more for higher coverage levels.

A comprehensive travel insurance plan bundles several types of travel insurance coverage, each with its own limits. To ensure you have adequate financial protection for your trip, your travel insurance policy should include the following travel insurance coverages:

  • Trip cancellation . With trip cancellation insurance , you’re covered if you need to call off your trip because of a reason listed in your policy, such as unexpected illness, injury or death of you, a family member or a travel companion, severe weather, jury duty and your travel supplier going out of business.
  • Travel delay. Once your trip has started, travel delay insurance reimburses you for unexpected expenses you incur after a minimum delay, such as five hours. It can cover needs like airport meals, transportation and even overnight accommodation.
  • Trip interruption. If you need to cut your trip early for a reason listed in your policy, trip interruption insurance can reimburse you for any prepaid, nonrefundable payments you’ll lose by leaving early. It can also pay for a last-minute one-way ticket home.
  • Travel medical . Emergency medical benefits are especially important if you need international health insurance for travel outside of the country. Your domestic health insurance may provide limited coverage once you leave the U.S. The best travel medical insurance pays for ambulance service, doctor visits, hospital stays, X-rays, lab work and prescription medication you may require while traveling.
  • Emergency medical evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote area, or planning excursions such as boating to an island, emergency medical evacuation coverage is a good idea. This coverage pays to transport you to the nearest adequate medical facility if you are injured or sick while traveling.
  • Baggage delay. After a certain waiting period, such as six or 12 hours, this coverage will reimburse you for necessities you need to buy to tide you over while you wait for your bag to arrive. Be sure to save your receipts and look at your coverage limit, as some caps are low, like $200.
  • Baggage loss. Baggage insurance can reimburse you if your bag never arrives, or if your personal belongings are stolen during your travels. Coverage limits apply here, as well as exclusions for certain items such as electronics.

“Typically, travelers are expected to pay their expenses out of pocket, and then file a claim for reimbursement,” said James Clark, spokesperson for Squaremouth. “However, there are medical situations in which a provider may be required to pre-authorize payment to make sure the policyholder receives the treatment they need.”

According to Clark, “Providers can pre-authorize payment for medical care and emergency evacuations. With that said, every circumstance is unique, and providers will handle each situation on a case-by-case basis.”

Travel insurance covers your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs — as well as extra money you may need to spend due to unforeseen circumstances and emergencies — both before and during your trip.

Travel insurance coverage varies by plan, but in general travel insurance covers costs associated with these problems:

  • Bankruptcy of a travel insurance company, such as your airline or tour operator.
  • Dangerous weather conditions.
  • Delayed and lost luggage.
  • Illness or death in your family that requires you to stay home or cut your trip short.
  • Illness that needs medical attention.
  • Injury requiring medical evacuation.
  • Jury duty.
  • Travel delays and missed connections.
  • Theft of your personal belongings while traveling.
  • Unexpected job loss.

Travel insurance policies often exclude or limit “foreseeable” losses. Typical travel insurance exclusions include:

  • Accidents or injuries caused by drinking or drug use.
  • Canceling your trip because you changed your mind.
  • Ending your trip early because you changed your mind.
  • Losses caused by intentional self harm, including suicide.
  • Losses due to war, civil disorder or riots.
  • Medical tourism.
  • Medical treatment for pre-existing conditions.
  • Mental health care.
  • Natural disasters that begin before you buy travel insurance.
  • Non-medical evacuation.
  • Normal pregnancy.
  • Medical treatment related to high-risk activities.
  • Routine medical care, such as physicals or dental care.
  • Search and rescue.

Your U.S. health insurance may provide little or no coverage in foreign countries. Check with your health insurance company to see if you have any global benefits and ask how they work. If your health care does extend across the border, the benefits it provides abroad may not be the same benefits it provides domestically.

Medicare usually won’t pay for health care outside of the United States and its territories, so older travelers planning an international trip should look into the best senior travel insurance with robust medical benefits.

The best time to buy travel insurance is immediately after booking your trip and making a nonrefundable payment — in other words, as soon as you’re at risk of losing money. This way, you’ll know the total cost that you need to insure and you’ll have the longest window to take advantage of your policy’s benefits if something goes wrong.

You can’t wait until something goes wrong and then buy travel insurance to get reimbursed for your loss. Travel insurance only covers unexpected losses.

Travel insurance companies can decline to cover travel to certain countries. For example, you may find that some trip insurance companies don’t offer coverage to countries with a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory from the U.S. State Department.

Travel insurance policies also frequently exclude certain risks that you’re more likely to encounter in Level 4 or Level 3 countries. For example, your policy may not cover losses related to declared or undeclared wars or acts of war or losses related to known or foreseeable conditions or events.

Some credit cards , such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , offer benefits such as trip cancellation and interruption insurance, baggage delay insurance and trip delay reimbursement when you use your card to pay for your trip.

Ask your credit card issuer for your card’s benefits guide to see what coverage you may have. Keep in mind that it may not cover all the risks you want to protect against, such as the cost of international health care or emergency medical evacuation .

Business travel insurance makes sense if you are self-employed and paying for your own travel expenses, or if you are traveling internationally and want medical coverage abroad.

You might also consider buying travel insurance for a business trip if your company won’t cover extra expenses if your flight is delayed or you need to head home early.

Cruise travel insurance can help protect you financially if you need emergency medical care in a remote location, or if a delayed flight causes you to miss embarkation and you need to pay extra to catch up to your cruise.

Experts caution that travel insurance you buy through a cruise line may not be as comprehensive as plans you can buy directly from travel insurance companies.

Some travel insurance plans cover rental cars as an optional upgrade, for an additional cost. The 5-star rated travel insurance companies in our rating offer these optional rental car benefits:

  • Travel Insured International — Rental car damage and theft coverage of $50,000.
  • WorldTrips — Rental car damage and theft coverage of $50,000 with a $250 deductible.

Travel insurance typically only covers a single trip, although your insured trip can have multiple destinations.

If you’re looking to insure several trips in the same year, annual travel insurance may be a good option for you.

Travel insurance may be required, depending on the country you plan to visit. But it’s smart to consider buying a travel insurance policy for international travel, even when it is not required. A good travel insurance policy can protect you financially if you need emergency medical assistance when traveling, or if you need to cut your trip short and buy a last-minute plane ticket home because an immediate family member is ill.

2023 financial disclosure reports for Supreme Court justices also show six-figure book payments for Kavanaugh, Gorsuch and Jackson.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has disclosed for the first time visits to Bali and to a private club in California in 2019 that were paid for by his friend and benefactor, Texas billionaire Harlan Crow, according to financial disclosures released Friday for eight of the nine justices.

The required annual reports, covering activity in 2023, show three justices — Brett M. Kavanaugh , Neil M. Gorsuch and Ketanji Brown Jackson — received six-figure book payments.

Jackson also accepted four tickets worth nearly $4,000 from Beyoncé to one of her concerts, and two pieces of art worth $12,500 to display in the justice’s chambers.

“Justice Jackson is ‘ Crazy in Love ’ with Beyoncé’s music. Who isn’t?” said court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor reported a star turn as a cartoon character on the PBS children’s show “Alma’s Way,” an animated series about a Puerto Rican girl and her family from the Bronx. The justice was paid about $1,900 for voice work on one episode in which she played herself.

The reports show several justices earning additional income from teaching at law schools and accepting free travel to speak at events at universities and legal organizations.

Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. was granted an extension to file his report, as he has received in past years.

The off-the-bench activities of Supreme Court justices have been scrutinized and criticized in the last year following reports by ProPublica and other media outlets that Thomas failed for many years to disclose luxury vacations and private jet travel funded by Crow, an influential Republican donor.

In his report last year , Thomas disclosed for the first time Crow’s purchase of three properties from the justice’s family years earlier — transactions also reported by ProPublica and which ethics experts had said should have been reported by the justice when they occurred.

Thomas also disclosed in 2023 free private jet travel he received the previous year, saying a recent clarification to the judiciary’s ethics policies meant such reporting was required for travel since 2022.

Democratic lawmakers and transparency advocates asked the judiciary’s policymaking body last year to review Thomas’s reporting practices, claiming that he might have violated the Ethics in Government Act. At the Judicial Conference meeting in March , the head of the conference said a committee is still examining the allegations from lawmakers.

Thomas’s 2023 report includes food and lodging in 2019 during trips to Indonesia and the Bohemian Grove club in California, both paid for by Crow and included in ProPublica’s reporting. The justice said he had “inadvertently omitted” the information in past reports and was amending the record “consistent with the review of prior filings.” He did not list travel to and from each place.

Gabe Roth, executive director of the watchdog group Fix the Court, questioned whether Thomas was being fully transparent. Under the court’s new ethics guidelines, Roth said, the justice also should have disclosed a private jet flight and travel by yacht in Indonesia. ProPublica reported last year that Thomas traveled to Bali in 2019 aboard Crow’s private jet and cruised Indonesian islands aboard his 162-foot superyacht. ProPublica estimated the total cost of the trip at more than $500,000.

“The fact that he omitted the plane to Indonesia and the yacht around Indonesia leads me to believe he and I have very different interpretations of his disclosure responsibilities,” Roth said. “And that’s a problem.”

Thomas, who said he consulted with an accountant and ethics counsel in filing his report, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The justice said in his report last year that he believed that the change in policy only applied to travel in 2022 and thereafter.

Federal ethics law requires top officials from all branches of government, including the justices, to file annual disclosures listing investments, gifts, outside income and the source of spousal income so that the public can assess potential conflicts of interest. Officials from the legislative and executive branch also have more stringent requirements.

As of January, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. earns an annual salary of $312,200, while associate justices each earn $298,500. The judiciary’s rules limit justices to “outside earned income” of no more than about $32,000 per year, which three collect through teaching positions.

But book-writing payments do not count as outside income, allowing justices to enter into lucrative contracts with publishers. At least four justices have forthcoming books about their lives and the law. Reports released Friday show Kavanaugh is at work on a book , for which he has so far received $340,000. A court spokesman confirmed a report in Axios that Kavanaugh is writing a legal memoir.

Jackson received an $893,750 advance from Penguin Random House for her upcoming memoir, “ Lovely One .” The book, slated to hit shelves later this year, traces “her family’s ascent from segregation to her confirmation on America’s highest court within the span of one generation,” according to the publisher’s site.

Gorsuch received $250,000 in royalties from the publisher HarperCollins, which is slated to release a book he co-wrote with a former law clerk in August. “Over Ruled” will examine the profusion of laws in the United States and the “human toll so much law can carry for ordinary Americans.”

Here are additional highlights from each justice’s federal disclosure:

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.

Roberts reported no reimbursements , gifts or outside positions, in keeping with recent years.

Justice Clarence Thomas

Thomas reported receiving two photo albums worth $2,000 from Terrence Giroux , the former executive director of the Horatio Alger Society, and Giroux’s wife Barbara. Thomas is an honorary board member of the exclusive nonprofit organization, which gives college scholarships to high school students who embody the “rags to riches” profile found in books written by Gilded Age American author Horatio Alger.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor

Sotomayor received nearly $87,000 in book payments from Penguin Random House, which has published a number of books she wrote.

The Dwight D. Opperman Foundation and Harvard University Law School reimbursed Sotomayor for appearances in Massachusetts and Los Angeles in 2023, according to her disclosure report . The former trip was to present the Justice Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award; the latter to judge a moot court and meet students.

Justice Elena Kagan

Notre Dame Law School reimbursed Justice Elena Kagan for travel, lodging and meals after she gave a speech there in September.

Justice Neil M. Gorsuch

In addition to the book payments, Gorsuch received nearly $30,000 for teaching at Virginia’s George Mason University.

Gorsuch was reimbursed for travel to teach in Lisbon, by George Mason, and for travel to Williamsburg, Va., by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation on which he serves as a board member.

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh

Kavanaugh taught at the University of Notre Dame Law School, earning $25,000 as an adjunct professor, according to his report . He also continued coaching girls’ basketball team at Blessed Sacrament.

The justice reported two trips paid for by Notre Dame — one for a law school symposium and the other in London for a law school seminar.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett

Justice Amy Coney Barrett continued to teach at her previous employer, the University of Notre Dame Law School, where she earned about $15,000 as an adjunct professor. Barrett was reimbursed for transportation and meals on five trips, including to participate in Notre Dame’s moot court in February and to lecture at the University of Minnesota in October. She also spoke at events held by Harvard University, Notre Dame and the Saint Thomas More Society, a Catholic legal organization.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson

Jackson was reimbursed for transportation , meals and lodging for three trips. She spoke at Boston University’s commencement ceremony and attended a convention in Indianapolis that was reimbursed by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She also reported traveling to Birmingham in September to speak at the historic 16th Street Baptist Church and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
