The wonderful Northern Explorer train is easily the best way to get from downtown Auckland to city centre Wellington, stress-free and in comfort at ground level, stopping off at the Tongariro National Park for a couple of days if you like.

It's an epic 681 kilometre (423 mile) journey across the interior of the North Island, through every kind of scenery there is, from coastline to volcanoes to mountains, lush green farmland to thick New Zealand bush.  It takes you the length of the historic North Island Main Trunk Railway , started in 1885 and completed in 1908, over feats of engineering such the Raurimu Spiral , Turangarere Horseshoe and Makatote Viaduct.  It's one of the world's great railway journeys and one of my favourites, far more historically and economically significant than the branch line used by the TranzAlpine train on the South Island.

And all this costs from NZ$ 158 (£90 or US$115).  Don't waste the opportunity, ditch that domestic flight and take the train!

Auckland-Wellington Northern Explorer timetable & fares

* = Since December 2015 the train leaves from the Kiwirail Scenic terminal, a basic platform at the old Strand Station.

The Northern Explorer has new panoramic carriages, reclining seats, cafe car, open air viewing car, power sockets at all seats.

Children aged 2-14 travel at reduced fare.  Infants under 2 travel free.

How to buy tickets

Option 4 , tour operator Railbookers offers various holidays & tours around New Zealand which include train travel, more information here .

What's it like on board the train?

The Northern Explorer uses new AK panoramic sightseeing coaches built in KiwiRail's Dunedin workshops in New Zealand in 2011-2012.  These replace the old rebuilt 1930s & 1940s carriages used until June 2012 by its predecessor, the Overlander. Photos courtesy of James Chuang

Comfortable seats , most facing direction of travel, some in bays of 4 around a table, all lining up with huge panoramic windows (note the roof skylights too!), with loads of legroom even if you're over six feet tall.  Seats are not always allocated at booking, but by the train manager before departure.  However, if you book by phone (or book online and then call KiwiRail's freephone number when you get to NZ and quote your booking reference) you can make a seating request.  For example, four friends or family travelling together could request one of the few bays of 4 seats facing each other around a table, keen photographers could request a seat close to the viewing platform.  Requests can't be guaranteed, of course, but it doesn't hurt to ask!  All your heavy baggage is checked in to the baggage van, only hand luggage may be taken into the seating coaches.  Larger photo .

Cafe-bar:   In the centre of the train is a counter selling tea, coffee, wine, beer, spirits, snacks & light microwaveable meals at reasonable prices.  I can recommend a cream tea in the afternoon, and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc!  You can buy at the counter and take your food & drink back to your seat, but staff also come through the train taking orders for delivery to your seat.  Bring cash, as cards are sometimes not accepted if the credit card machine is out of cellphone range.  Larger photo .

Open-air viewing platform:   At the Wellington end of the train (rear going north, behind the locomotive going south) is a large open-air viewing platform, ideal for seeing and photographing the scenery, with no glass in between you and it.  Children must be accompanied.  The viewing cars now have additional rails to prevent you leaning out.

What to see on the Auckland to Wellington train ride

A recorded commentary is played over your complimentary headphones, pointing out things of interest.  It's linked with the route map displayed on the in-car display screens.  Here's a summary of what to look out for on the journey from Auckland to Wellington:

Funnily enough, the Britomart Transport Centre occupies the site of Auckland's second railway station (albeit on the surface), right behind the post office, opened in 1885 on land reclaimed from the sea and used until 1930.  Auckland's very first station (1873-1885) was located only a few hundred yards away from here too.

A brief history

Watch the video: the auckland to wellington train on the raurimu spiral.

The video was taken from the old Overlander's tail-end observation lounge, and some shots from the open-air viewing platform, as it climbs the famous Raurimu Spiral. The 'Goodbye' in the title is no longer necessary, as the Overlander was saved, and now replaced by the Northern Explorer.  Take it the next time you need to go from Auckland to Wellington! Hotels & accommodation

Personal recommendation in wellington.

In Auckland, the Airedale Hotel or Mercure Auckland Hotel are both sound central choices, the latter right near the Britomart station and Devonport ferry terminal, though not the cheapest options.  In Wellington, the Shepherds Arms Hotel is a cosy gastro pub just 15 minutes walk from Parliament and the city centre with friendly staff, great food and good beer.  A top choice!

Travel insurance & VPN

Always take out travel insurance.

Never travel overseas without travel insurance from a reliable insurer, with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover.  It should also cover cancellation and loss of cash and belongings, up to a sensible limit.  An annual multi-trip policy is usually cheaper than several single-trip policies even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Here are some suggested insurers.  Seat61 gets a small commission if you buy through these links.

UK flag

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a mobile data package for the country you're visiting and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM card so you don't need to buy a physical SIM, including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate, then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month at time of writing.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than digging a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Get a VPN for safe browsing.  W hy you need a VPN

When you're travelling you often use free WiFi in public places which may not be secure.  A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi.  It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply.  See VPNs & why you need one explained .  ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using the links on this page, you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription.  I get a small commission to help support this site.

Carry an Anker powerbank

Tickets, reservations, vaccination records and Interrail or Eurail passes are often held digitally on your mobile phone, so it's vital to keep it charged.  I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over if I can't get to a power outlet.  Buy from Amazon.co.uk or from Buy from Amazon.com .

How to Travel from Auckland to Wellington By Train

If you’re travelling the North Island of New Zealand, you might be wondering, is it possible to get from Auckland to Wellington by train? If you don’t want to drive or fly then the train is a great option. This article will walk you through how to travel from Auckland to Wellington by train or vice versa.

New Zealand is a stunningly beatuful country but it’s not always the easiest to get around. The train network in New Zealand is nowhere near as extensive as the railways in Europe, Asia or even North America. However, it does exist and it can be a good option for travellers.

The intercity trains in New Zealand are run by one company, Great Journeys of NZ (the consumer face of KiwiRail) and there are only 3 routes: The Northern Explorer (Auckland to Wellington), Coastal Pacific (Picton to Christchurch) and TranzAlpine (Christchurch to Greymouth).

The Auckland Wellington train, and both other routes, are very much tourist trains. They’re not designed for or frequently used by locals. This means they are pricier but the service onboard is top class with all the comforts you could need.

northern explorer train to wellington

Auckland to Wellington Train Route

The Northern Explorer is the name of the train service that connects Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand’s North Island and where most visitors arrive in the country, to Wellington, the vibrant capital city.

This train journey from Auckland to Wellington covers approximately 680 kilometres (422 miles) and takes you through some of the most spectacular landscapes the country has to offer.

The Auckland to Wellington train journey usually takes around 10 to 11 hours, depending on the weather conditions and any unforeseen delays.

Scenery along the Train Route

As you board the Northern Explorer in Auckland, get ready to witness some truly stunning landscapes unfold before your eyes. The train passes through all the besy bits of the North Island including the green Waikato farmland, majestic Mount Tongariro, and the becahes of the Kapiti Coast.

One of the highlights you can only experience when travelling the North Island by train is the Raurimu Spiral, a remarkable feat of engineering where the train navigates a series of tight spirals to climb a steep incline.

While the train journey itself is a captivating experience, make sure to allow yourself some time to explore the vibrant cities at each end of the route.

Auckland, often referred to as the “City of Sails,” offers a bustling urban experience with its iconic Sky Tower, waterfront promenades, and diverse dining scene.

Wellington , on the other hand, is known for its vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, art galleries, and a thriving coffee culture .

I’d reccommend at least 2 days in each of these cities before or after your train journey to make the most of your New Zealand adventure. See my weekend in Wellington itinerary for inspiration.

view from the northern explorer train

Onboard the Auckland-Wellington Train

The Northern Explorer provides a comfortable and relaxing travel experience. The train has massive windows, so you can take in all the sights from the comfort of your seat. And if that isn’t enough, there is an open-air viewing carriage on every train which is the best place to get photos.

There is audio commentary along the route that tells you a bit about what’s out the window, but you’ll need to bring your own headphones with a jack to plug into the armrest.

Food and Drink

There is a cafe car on board to Auckland to Wellington train that serves full meals as well as snacks and drinks (including alcohol). I’d describe the quality as slightly above airplane level.

If you book a Scenic Plus ticket you get restaurant-style meals delivered to your seat.

You can bring large pieces of luggage onboard the train, think the same as an airline baggage allowance. And like an airline, you’re required to check in large bags before departure and collect them at the end station. Smaller bags without wheels can stay with you and go in overhead racks or under the seats.

Best Stops on the Auckland to Wellington Northern Explorer train

If you don’t wnat to travel the whole way from Auckland to Wellington in one go, you can jump off the train at one of the stations along the route and continue your jounrey another day.

You don’t need to book seperate tickets to do this, you just have to add a stop when making your booking. So it’s a great way to see some North Island attractions.

As someone who grew up in the North Island, the stops I’d actually say are worthwhile are Hamilton (2 hours south of Auckland) and either National Park or Ohakune (another 3-4 hours further south).

Hamilton is my hometown and is growing fast with lost of amazing cafes and restaurants (try The Kirk for brunch and Guthenberg for dinner) as well as the stunning Hamilton Gardens. See my Hamilton 2 day itinerary for more ideas on what to do.

With National Park and Ohakune, both are awesome but they’re very similar, with alpine scnery and ski-town vibes. If you want to do the Tongario Crossing hike then go to National Park, otherwise go to Ohakune, it has slightly more infratsructure. Both are good for skiing at Ruapehu.

Schedules for trains between Auckland and Wellington

The Wellington to Auckland train only leaves has one departure each day, leaving Auckland at 7:45 am and arriving in Wellington at 6:25 pm or leaving Wellington at 7:55 am and arriving in Auckland at 7 pm.

It;s annoying that there aren’t more options but at least these times ensure you can enjoy the secnery in the daylight and arrive in time for dinner.

Important Note: Changes in schedules or services are possible so it’s recommended that you check the official website of the Northern Explorer for the most up-to-date information before planning your trip.

How to buy Wellington-Auckland train tickets

The easiest way to book your tickets is online, through the Great Journeys of NZ website. You’ll get the latest prices, and they sometimes have discounts advertised, so it’s worth signing up to their mailing list if you plan on travelling soon. You can also purchase tickets through authorised travel agents.

The website’s booking system isn’t great so you have to call or email for any changes.

Definititely book your tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons (November to March), to make sure you don’t miss out on your preferred travel dates.

As for the cost, the ticket prices for the Auckland to Wellington train journey vary depending on factors such as the class of travel, time of year, and any promotional offers available.

A standard one-way ticket can range from $150 in autumn winter to $250+ on a weekend in summer. That may or may not be cheaper than flying but it’s dfeineitly a better experience. Train tickets also don’t tend to go up that much so it can be cost-effective for last minute travel.

Generally, there are two classes of tickets available: Scenic and Scenic Plus class. Scenic Plus is basically like business class on a plane with the main perk being better food. Scenic PLus isn’t always offered.

'Beyond a joke': Deputy mayor slams Auckland train disruptions as third world

rail travel wellington to auckland

Auckland’s rail network has been blasted as “third world” after fresh disruptions today which saw services across the entire network suspended for about seven hours, throwing commuters’ travel plans into chaos.

Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson says Aucklanders cannot rely on trains and has called for the myriad agencies which operate, maintain and own the city’s railways and services to work together to solve the compounding problems.

“Respectfully, I’ve been to a few third world countries and I’ve seen their trains - and at least they actually operate.”

Auckland Transport (AT) said there was an issue with track points near Middlemore about 7.30am. Kiwirail said the issue was fixed about 10am but trains only began running again about 2pm. Frustrated commuters were forced to find alternative travel options during the disruption.

Delays and cancellations remained this evening, causing further misery for passengers.

It comes amid a strike by two groups of workers who maintain and operate the city’s trains. Timetables have been slashed to 20-minute frequencies due to the strikes.

It also follows disruptions earlier this year, including when trains were suspended due to tracks being too hot and when rail signals went down.

The Auckland Ratepayers Alliance said AT was “gaslighting” the city when chief executive Dean Kimpton told said publicly last week that AT’s operations worked well 99 per cent of the time.

“[Kimpton] would have us believe that Auckland Transport not working is a 1 per cent phenomenon,” Alliance spokesman Sam Warren said.

“AT is taking us all for mugs as the city’s transport network reaches third-world status.”

  • 'Deeply frustrating': Auckland trains to run once every 20 minutes at peak time due to strike
  • Trains will be running for commute home after chaotic morning - AT

Simpson echoed those comments.

She called for Mayor Wayne Brown to pull different agencies together to sort out the ongoing issues.

“You’ve got to admit our train services have been undeniably unreliable this year. We’ve had hot tracks, signal issues and trains down during peak times multiple times, for multiple reasons. We’ve had industrial actions, we’ve still got it, and we’ve had screeching trains. You name it,” Simpson said.

“I feel for Aucklanders who must be incredibly frustrated that they cannot rely on the train service. It’s a key part of Auckland’s public transport network and yet continuously, there have been disruptions and Aucklanders are having to find other ways of getting [around].

“It’s beyond a joke now, honestly. It’s just not acceptable.

“We’ve had the train tracks closed for months and yet we still have issues. It’s just got to be solved - and it has got to be solved now.

Simpson said the different agencies responsible for the city’s railways, Auckland One Rail, AT and Kiwirail, had to work together to fix the constant problems.

“At the end of the day, let’s hope the industrial action can get sorted. But let’s hope that the track and signal issues are solved once and for good.

“[If the network] works and can be reliable, then the networking and programming - the part that AT does - they can actually deliver what we need for Aucklanders.”

AT rail franchise manager Craig Inger said: “We appreciate this disruption is extremely frustrating for our customers and want a resolution to this industrial action as quickly as possible.”

He warned that industrial action was ongoing and there might be some further cancellations into the evening.

“Auckland One Rail has been in collective bargaining with the Rail and Maritime [Transport] Union of New Zealand and we are disappointed that it has come to industrial action, impacting many of our customers,” Inger said.

How to get from Auckland to Wellington by Train

Taking a train to get from Auckland to Wellington is a safe, fast, and scenic option to travel the country. On certain routes, there are multiple train departures per day every 10 to 15 minutes. This is typical for intercity travel, while for long distance train routes there are fewer scheduled departures – plan ahead to choose the one that fits your itinerary best.

Buying your tickets online will help you secure the trip on the selected date and avoid queuing at the station.. When travelling on weekends and holidays it is recommended to reserve tickets much earlier due to a much higher demand. During high season, train tickets sell out quickly – do book as early as you can.

How far is it from Auckland to Wellington?

Travelling by train, the distance from Auckland to Wellington is 400 miles. Before setting on for a train journey, have a look at the map to find out what tourist spots or landmarks you will pass by – maybe they are worth a quick stop?

How long does it take to get from Auckland to Wellington by Train?

Travel time from Auckland to Wellington is estimated to be about 10h 40m. Trains ensure the fastest time to travel by land. As normally there is no congestion, the speed of travel is more or less constant and stops at train stations are rather short, train is almost always one of the quickest and safest ways to get from Auckland and Wellington.

The most important thing that may affect train travel time is the type of train. Ordinary trains travel at a speed of about 40 mph or 65 km/h to 65 mph or 105 km/h. Some intercity trains with shorter distances between stations run slower than 40 mph. Even with these low speeds, it can still be faster than commuting by car, bus or taxi.

The speed of express trains can reach up to 100 mph or 160 km/h. Modern high-speed trains can run at speeds exceeding 250 mph or 400 km/h.

These speeds of travel together with relatively short stops between stations can greatly shorten the duration of your trip.

How much does it cost to get from Auckland to Wellington by Train?

The train ticket price from Auckland to Wellington varies depending on the types of trains or carriages available.

Some trains feature different types of carriages, seats and berths offering various amenities and level of comfort.

Basic passenger trains which are often non-air-conditioned and have wooden, hard or old seats are normally cheap. Premium or luxury trains and coaches have a higher ticket price but are equipped with air-conditioning, toilets, and large soft seats with sufficient legroom to make train rides comfortable.

Considering the distance travelled, train is the most affordable means of transport. Also, ticket prices include 2 or 3 bags – sometimes even more – per passenger.

Auckland to Wellington timetable

Trains are great for long-distance travel. Double-check your travel itinerary and use the Auckland to Wellington timetable above with train departure times and arrival times to find the best train for your route.

Best-Rated Companies for this Route

Unlike buses or taxis which have numerous companies offering their services, train service is usually offered by just one major company in each country. As railway service requires a large amount of infrastructure, most railway companies are government-owned and are a part of the national transport system.

One of the best advantages of travelling by train is that railway stations are often conveniently located within or very near major cities and urban areas. Immediately on arrival to their destination, travellers find themselves in close proximity to important facilities like hotels, supermarkets, and hospitals.

If you travel with a lot of bags and luggage, trains are your best option. Luggage weight limits on trains are rather flexible and allow you to carry multiple bags with you.

Special or luxury trains feature sufficient legroom which allows you to stretch your legs and relax. In comfort and space these train seats can be compared to business class airplane seats.

Similar to buses, trains can provide a variety of amenities to make your travel more comfortable and enjoyable. Modern trains have WIFI service, a snack counter and a drinking bar. Onboard toilets can be a life saver for travellers with queasy stomachs.

Lastly, unlike buses and other overland means of transport, trains are very rarely involved in accidents.

Another Step Towards City Rail Link Opening

Press Release – City Rail Link

A major step towards connecting City Rail Link (CRL) to the existing rail network will be carried out this Matariki long weekend.

New CRL signalling systems will be integrated with those already in operation, allowing trains to operate seamlessly and safely between the new tunnels and the existing network.

Signalling is essentially a sophisticated traffic light system for the railway network, showing drivers when trains can move safely and their route.

The work will be carried out by KiwiRail and Link Alliance on behalf of City Rail Link Limited (CRL Ltd) during a full rail network closure for the Matariki weekend (28 – 30 June). Other work during the closure includes electrification and Rail Network Rebuild work from Papakura to Pukekohe, Middlemore station upgrades and the new western power feed.

KiwiRail Chief Infrastructure Officer Andre Lovatt says CRL will be a game changer for how people travel across the city but the complexities and challenges of connecting new infrastructure with existing systems should not be underestimated.

“There will inevitably be integration complexities that result in disruption for passengers as we continue to carry out the huge scope of work to get ready for City Rail Link.

“We have designed this signalling system integration to minimise the risk of disruption to passengers in the morning peak following the Matariki network shut. This includes completing all the signalling data updates at the same time to reduce interface risks and reduce the likelihood that normal train operations at Waitematā (Britomart) will be disrupted, even if the CRL elements aren’t completed during the long weekend.”

CRL Ltd’s Chief Executive, Dr Sean Sweeney says that evidence from projects overseas tells us the testing and commissioning phase, which the CRL project has entered, is the most complicated phase of building a new railway.

“New Zealand has never built an underground metro railway before. Simply put, it is a case of not always knowing what we don’t know until we commission and test it.

“Before passengers can use City Rail Link, we need to carry out a huge programme of testing, commissioning and system integration in conjunction with our partners, KiwiRail and Auckland Transport. Not only do individual systems need to work as planned, but all the systems need to work together, as expected,” Dr Sweeney says.

Auckland Transport Director Public Transport and Active Modes Stacey van der Putten says rail replacement buses will be operating for those who need to travel during Matariki weekend while this vital piece of work is being completed.

“We are very aware our rail customers have experienced frequent disruptions lately, including recent industrial action. We’re grateful for their ongoing patience and support while our partners work hard towards making rail easier, better connected and more reliable for Aucklanders.

  • CRL Ltd, Auckland Transport and KiwiRail are working together to deliver the better-connected network with faster, more frequent, and reliable trains that City Rail Link will bring as quickly as possible.
  • The signalling updates are being implemented at Morningside (including Maungawhau), Newmarket, Quay Park and Waitematā (Britomart) and Penrose. These important changes will integrate the CRL into the existing inner part of the Auckland rail network.
  • Signalling data updates at Waitematā (Britomart) are also part of the process to allow for the through running of trains when CRL opens.
  • The update will bring online and integrate the new CRL signalling equipment rooms.
  • The signal update has been designed in a way that reduces the likelihood of disruption to normal train operations at Waitematā (Britomart) if the CRL elements are not completed in time.
  • We are completing all the updates at the same time to reduce the interface risks of multiple smaller updates.
  • A test train will run on Sunday to certify the signals have been successfully integrated.
  • Buses will replace all trains, and a Puhinui Express bus will run from Waitematā Station to Puhinui Station via Newmarket to keep customers connected to the airport.

City Rail Link testing and commissioning:

  • Testing and commissioning everything is a complex operation that will take months. Not only does each system need to work as planned, but all the systems need to work together in integration.
  • Newly installed infrastructure and systems of the CRL
  • Existing systems on the trains
  • Existing wider rail network systems
  • Existing Auckland Transport IT and communication systems.
  • Each of the 260 train drivers required to operate the CRL will need to undertake three months of training.

City Rail Link Benefits:

  • More reliable trains
  • A better-connected rail network and better connections to other modes of transport
  • Improved access across the region, but especially the city centre.
  • Double the number of people within 30 minutes of NZ’s biggest employment hub.
  • An attractive alternative to travelling by car, which means less congestion for people who need the roads.
  • Better health and environmental outcomes.
  • Significant commercial and residential opportunities around the stations.
