T Narasipura, confluence of Kaveri and Kabini river

Tirumakudalu Narasipura, as the name refers is the confluence of the Kaveri and the Kabini (or Kapila) river. Commonly known as T Narasipura, it is a small town in Mysuru district. Like many other “Prayags”, this town is also religiously prominent place. Known as Dakshina Kashi, it is a major pilgrim centre, and Kumbamela is held every three years.

Confluence of Kaveri and Kabini

Our visit to T Narasipura

After our visit to Somnathpur , we decided to go to T Narasipura. Our primary interest was to see the confluence of the rivers. The small road towards confluence passed through Chowdeshwari Temple, Agasteswara Temple and finally ended at Vyasaraya Matha. As we got down our vehicle, we saw the beautiful sight of Kabini river from the right side joining the Kaveri river flowing from the left side.

Bigsheshawara Temple on the side of Kaveri River

Steps were constructed to the river bank. Few people were earning their livelihood by offering coracle rides. They ferried people to a small island, considered as the “Sangama” and people bathed at that place. We just sat next to the river dipping our legs into the water. While we expected fishes to do some pedicure, they did not heed our wishes!! We enjoyed the time as the area was peaceful and serene.

Coracle ride at T Narasipura

A huge temple on the other side of the river drew our attention. It was Gunja Narasimhaswamy temple, belonging to Vijaynagar era. The view from the temple looked promising, and we decided to visit that place.

Gunja Narasimhaswamy temple

The temple is situated in a large complex. Though it was bit crowded, we found that the river side was empty. As expected, this place provided a nice view of the confluence. The colour of the river looked different but it was not as contrasting as the ones I saw in Uttarakhana ( Link here ).

View of Sangama from Gunja Narasimhaswamy temple

It was a satisfying visit. We were also happy to see the place clean, which is uncommon in Hindu religious sites. The town also looked very decent.

The town is considered highly sacred and it derives its name from the land which is at the confluence of the three rivers and from the temple of Gunja Narasimhaswamy which is situated right beside the confluence.

History of T.Narasipura

It is believed that Rishi Agasthiya had visualized this place long ago. He wanted to pay worship to Lord Shiva and he asked Hanuman to get him a linga. Hanuman took more time than expected by the Rishi, which led the Rishi to make a lingam out of the sand and begin his worship. Once Hanuman returned with the lingam, he was angry and tried to demolish the linga. The linga brought by Hanuman has been placed at a little distance and is known as Hanuman Linga.

The Somnathpura Chennakesava temple was built by Somanatha Dandanayaka, a high-ranking officer under the then Hoysala King Narasimha III between 1254 and 1291 AD. It took 68 years to build this architectural marvel which houses more than 5000 statues.

With no use of modern equipment, about 500 sculptors worked every day for 2 generations to complete this 750-year-old temple. The 5 main sculptors were Masanithamma, Mallithamma, Bameya, Chameya, and Chowdeya. Among them, Mallithamma, a Tamil sculptor is most famous for her ingenious beautiful carvings. She is the one who carved the most statues including the northern Sikhara of the Janardhana cell. Even today you can find the names of these artists etched in the plinth of these sculptures.

Why The Name Somnathpura?

Somnath means Shiva. But this is not a temple to honor Lord Shiva, but Lord Vishnu. Since the person who constructed the temple was named Somanatha, the village and temple got its name Somnathpura. ‘Pur’ or ‘Pura’ or ‘Puram’ means village or dwelling, a common suffix that can be noticed in several names of villages and cities across India.

Why Poojas Are Not Done In Somnathpura Temple?

In 1311, Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji’s general, Malik Kafur attacked and looted the temple treasures. A few years later again in 1326, Muhammad Bin Tughlaq attacked the temple. The main idol of Keshava in the Gharbagraha (sanctum) was completely destroyed by him.

carvings on the outer wall of the Somnathpura temple

If you notice carefully, the noses of every sculpture in the temple were chopped off, and some of the leg and hand parts were smashed. As per Hindu customs, damaged or defaced idols should not be worshiped. Since the statues are deformed, poojas are not done in the Somnathpura temple.

Initially, poojas were done for about 20 years before the attack happened. In 1958, the archaeological department declared this temple a protected monument. The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has maintained and preserved the monument since then.

Temple Inscriptions

Once you enter the temple, a huge stone slab can be found on your left. The inscriptions were written in the 13 century in the old Kannada script. The ancient script is challenging to interpret even for the native people of today. The inscriptions have details about the construction of the temple, the donations and contributions, and information about several patrons who helped in the upkeep of the temple.

A gist of what is written in the inscriptions is translated into English and kept on a board, for the visitors to understand.

Hoysala Architecture

The Hoysalas have a unique style of architecture. They built temples with soapstone or chalkstone and never used bricks, iron rods, or cement. These soap stones were taken from the Earth and they were smooth, soft, and had a soapy texture. They are carved and fused using the interlocking system which is scientifically known as the Cretaceous.

The temple is not carved out of a single stone, rather it was built using thousands of pieces put together. The lathe-turned pillars, delicately carved ceilings, and walls are the characteristic features of the Hoysala art. No machines were used during that time. Lathe-carved soapstone pillars were made by tying the chains to elephants and horses to rotate them.

Temple Layout

full view of the somnathpura temple, Mysore

The Chennakesava temple stands on a raised platform, shaped in the form of a Nakshatra (star) with 36 corners. The stone elephants once stood marking each start point. 11 out of 15 elephants survived the damage during the attack.

Since Somnathpura has three temples or Garbhagriha, it is also called Trikutachala. The structures of Venugopala (Krishna), Keshava, and Janardhana (three different forms of lord Vishnu) are kept inside the elegantly carved Shikhara (temple tower). From the 64 idols kept in Agrahara rooms, the Archeological Department has replaced the original Kesava idol as the original one had been completely defaced. Though the Kesava idol that you see today is not the original the other two idols of Krishna and Janardhana are original.

The three vimanas (temple towers) which are of the same height, combine intricate artwork, in a plan that alternates rotating squares with star-shaped 16-petalled lotuses. As the tower rises, rhythmically reducing in height is capped with kalashas (pots).

Carvings On The Outer Wall

carvings on the outer wall

The basement of the outer wall is heavily ornamented with friezes of elephants, horses, nature, epic scenes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the Bhagavata Purana, small images with intervening turrets and columns with figures in between, and various avatars of Vishnu and Lakshmi among other gods and goddess.

There are a total of 547 completely unique-looking elephants, differing in either their expressions or posture. 194 primary god idols are there, out of which 164 are of lord Vishnu. Some noteworthy ones include the one of Lord Vishnu in a sitting and meditating position, the dancing Ganesh, Lakshmi, and Saraswathi, 10 avatars of Vishnu, depictions of ladies enduring pregnancy in all the stages, Chamundeshwari demolishing Maheshasura, etc.

There are 13 separate water outlets for three temples. Made from a single stone, they are 13 feet each, starting from Garbhagraha and stretching all the way outside. The abhiseka or pooja water would come out through these water outlets (before the attack happened).

The Outer Cells/ Rooms

cells or rooms around the temple

There are a total of 64 cells around the main temple. Statues of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi were there in every room for which poojas were done (before the attack). But today, only a very few remain.

A few damaged pillars were rebuilt using sandstones in 1958. You can clearly notice the difference between the newly built sandstone pillars and the chalk stones from their color and texture.

Inside The Chennakesava Temple

inside somnathpur chennakesava temple

You will notice the Vishnu temple guards (Dwarapalakas – Jaya and Vijaya) on either side of the main entrance. There are 18 pillars in total, of which the two pillars to the east of the central square are shaped like a 32-pointed star and are handmade.

carvings in the ceiling of the temple

The 16 ceilings are carved illustrating the blooming stages of a lotus. The Navaranga or the dancing platform is small and can be found at the center. The new door at the entrance was made in 1958 by the Archeological Department of India.

The circular pillars were done by joining 5 pieces together – Peeta, Kamba, Kumba, Kati, and Baravahaka, known as Panchastilasthamba in Sanskrit (Pancha – 5, Stila – stone, Sthamba – pillar).

To know the hidden stories behind the beautifully etched drawings and sculptures, we highly recommend that you hire a guide . The guides beautifully show you the hidden stories through the carvings.

Looking to see the planetary parade June 3? NASA says you may be disappointed. Here's why.

If you're wanting to see a parade of planets, experts say later this month may be better for viewing an actual celestial show..

places to visit near t narasipura

Folks who are expecting to see a dazzling parade of planets on Monday June 3 may be disappointed by what they end up seeing in the sky and, instead, experts are saying they should manage their expectations and wait until the end of the month to see the planetary alignment .

The past couple of months have been pretty eventful for backyard astronomers. First, the solar eclipse in April, then the northern lights made a rare appearance in May, and now a parade of planets will make its 2024 debut.

Stargazers are supposed to be able to see six planets, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune and Saturn, aligned.

However, experts from NASA and Astronomers Without Borders both agree that it won't be the best time to see the planetary parade. That's because Uranus, Mercury and Jupiter will be swallowed up by the sun's light and be too close to the horizon to be visible.

Northern lights: Northern lights in US were dim compared to 'last time mother nature showed off': What to know

Experts say be patient: Planet parade will be more of a show later in June

"To me, the closest thing to a planet parade is June 29th, when you’ll have Saturn, the third-quarter Moon, Mars, and Jupiter arrayed across the sky at dawn," Preston Dyches, a public engagement specialist for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory told USA TODAY. Dyches has a background in astronomy and hosts NASA's " What's Up ," a monthly video series that describes what's happening in the night sky.

Andrew Fazekas, the communications manager for Astronomers Without Borders, says that when it comes to the planetary parade on June 3, it will be nearly impossible to see all the planets with the naked eye.

Both Fazekas and Dyches agree that it's better to see the planetary parade on June 29, instead.

On June 3, Jupiter, Mercury and Uranus are going to be "way too close to the sun," said Fazekas. So, it will be difficult to see those three planets.

So, folks who do decide to rise before the sun does on Monday morning just to get a glimpse at this celestial phenomenon could be setting themselves up for disappointment.

In this case, good things come to those who wait. And waiting until the end of the month will give stargazers a better chance at viewing the planets.

"If you're patient and you wait until the end of the month, these planets will move farther away from the sun higher up in the early morning sky," Fazekas told USA TODAY "So, that you will get an easier chance to pick them out in the sky.

Folks will not only get a better view of the planetary parade if they wait until June 29, but they'll be able to gaze at the stars on Friday night into Saturday morning, instead of having to view it during the work week like they would this Monday morning.

Excitement from solar eclipse, northern lights creating planet parade hype

People are expecting to see something amazing the morning of June 3, said Fazekas. But, he's worried the expectations set by two very viral celestial events, the solar eclipse and northern lights, and sensationalization on social media could raise people's expectations a bit too high and lead to a lackluster experience.

He adds that he's concerned one bad experience that was overhyped online could steal people's enthusiasm about astronomy.

"What worries me is that we set people up for disappointment," said Fazekas "And then they won't want to do it again."

According to Fazekas, he's never seen so many people interested in sky-watching, and he doesn't want the excitement to end.

What will you be able to see?

According to a program called SkySafari Pro, you will be able to see the following during the planetary parade on June 29:

  • Jupiter, which will be closest to the horizon.

What is a planetary parade?

Basically, it's when the planets form a straight line and look like they're marching across the night sky and form a sort of space parade.

It's also known as a large planetary alignment, states Delaware Online , a part of the USA TODAY Network.

What equipment do you need to view a planetary parade?

According to Fazekas, you will still need binoculars and telescopes to see some of the planets.

"Neptune is a planet that you need strong binoculars or a small telescope to be able to see," said Fazekas. "And it's not easy to find either."

Folks who go out to stargaze on June 28, will be able to see Neptune right next to the moon. On June 29, it will be farther away from the moon, and be above it instead.

Apps, like Skyview on the Apple app store, can turn people's phones into a tool that helps them identify celestial bodies in the night sky.

Where will you be able to see the planetary parade?

According to Fazekas, people will need to do the following to get a view of the planetary parade:

  • Get up early, before sunrise.
  • Find a spot with a clear view that faces the east or southeastern sky.
  • Have your binoculars or telescope ready to view planets that aren't visible to the naked eye.
