Officially called the Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area, this 4,630-acre tract of land is the most historically and ecologically significant property on the island. Formerly privately owned and the site of a plantation, the land is now managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Explore the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge

A former rice plantation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now protects this land that’s part of the larger 350,000-acre Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto (ACE) Basin System, the largest undeveloped wetland ecosystem on the Atlantic Coast. Visitors can access the Atlantic Ocean through 37 public beach access points situated at each intersection along Palmetto Boulevard. These access points vary, with some offering off-street parking and dune walkovers, while others are still undergoing improvements. 

Overnight parking is not permitted at any of the beach access points. Parking is only allowed from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with enforcement by the Police Department. 

Many of the access points feature dune crossings, which may pose challenges for individuals with accessibility needs. For easier access, individuals can utilize designated access points such as Lybrand, Mitchell, Baynard, and Edings. 

Additionally, beach mats have been installed at Access Points 1, 9, 20, and 28 to assist with crossing over the dunes.

Is Edisto Island in the Outer Banks?

No, Edisto Island is not located in the Outer Banks. It is situated off the southern coast of South Carolina, near Charleston. The Outer Banks are barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, further north from Edisto Island.

Edisto Beach is located on a barrier island in South Carolina. It is a quiet place to enjoy the beach, but it has a few surprises. Here are the top things you can do in Edisto Beach and Edisto Island.

Edisto Beach has been a favorite vacation destination for generations of South Carolina families. This relaxed and quaint coastal community is located within an easy one-hour drive from Charleston or Beaufort and two hours from Hilton Head Island .

At Edisto Beach, time moves slowly − sunrises and sunsets are meant to be savored. But the quiet nature of this beach town does not mean a shortage of things to do. There are plenty of fantastic attractions and activities in and around Edisto Beach to keep everyone in your group entertained.

• Edisto Beach State Park : This stunning oceanfront park has one and a half miles of beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Ocean that’s perfect for sunning, surf fishing and looking for seashells. It’s also a nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles. Pack a lunch and take advantage of the picnic area with shelters. There are restrooms, a gift shop and a wi-fi room.
• Public Beach Access Points : There are 37 public beach accesses outside of the park. Just drive down Palmetto Boulevard (Highway 174), and you will find one at every intersection. Some have off-street parking and boardwalks or walkways over the dunes. Some only have parking for golf carts, so you’ll need to park on the street. 
• Gray’s Beach : This is a great place to explore and watch the sunrise or sunset. It’s perfect for kids to play in the waves and the beach is very walkable. There is public parking, and it’s generally not very crowded. 
• Boneyard Beach : This beach, similar to Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island , is a great spot to take photos of the large driftwood formations. It’s located inside the Botany Bay Preserve, a half-mile walk from the parking area.

• Botany Bay Ecotours : From private tours of the ACE Basin to Sea Island cooking lessons and dolphin boat tours to relaxing sunset cruises, Botany Bay Ecotours has something to keep everyone in your family entertained.
• Edisto Shrimp Boat Charters : For anglers visiting Edisto Beach, a fishing charter is the perfect way to explore Edisto’s waters with a knowledgeable guide. Charters include both inshore and offshore fishing, or you can also arrange a custom charter for sightseeing and just enjoy an afternoon taking in the beauty of the surrounding waterways.
• The Marina at Edisto Beach : The Marina at Edisto Beach is not only a place where you can launch or dock your boat while on vacation, but it's also a great place to shop, dine, and be entertained! There's also saltwater fishing in the salt marsh. Guests with boats can use the boat ramp and courtesy dock at the western end of the park to access Big Bay Creek.
• Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area : This 3,363-acre site is part of one of the largest remaining undeveloped wetland ecosystems in the United States and is a great place to explore the natural beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Local's Tip : This land is so thoroughly protected that you cannot take anything from the Botany Bay grounds, not even the shells from the beach!

• Edisto Island Serpentarium : One of Edisto’s most beloved attractions, the serpentarium wows guests of all ages with its reptiles. Here you will have a chance to see lizards and alligators up close and even hold snakes during live demonstrations.
• Bay Creek Park : A great spot for crabbing and fishing, Bay Creek Park also hosts a weekly farmers' market. Public restrooms and an interpretive center are located onsite.
• Edisto Island Museum : Opened in 1991, thanks to the efforts of a passionate group of volunteer locals, the museum is the home of the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society and contains artifacts and collections exploring the rich history of the island, including the story of the Edisto Indians. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday with a gift shop full of island-inspired art, books, and jewelry.

Open Monday through Saturday and conveniently located on Highway 174 as you approach Edisto Beach, this store hosts a number of local and regional authors for signings. New and used books and a nice selection of Edisto history books and maps are available.
• The Old Post Office Restaurant : An Edisto favorite for generations, the landmark Old Post Office Restaurant is known for its favorite local dishes such as shrimp and grits and fried oysters.
• SeaCow Eatery : You will not find a better breakfast spot at Edisto Beach than the Sea Cow Eatery, and plan to arrive at 7 a.m. to avoid a wait. You missed one of the true jems of Edisto Beach. One 4 Coffee probably one of the best Coffee Shops in the state. Home made pastries and dessert plus a full array of coffee favorites including Baileys and Jameson and coffee.

Charleston may get a lot of attention — it’s been named Travel + Leisure readers’ favorite U.S. city in our World's Best Awards numerous times —  but there are many other South Carolina spots with sandy shores, fresh seafood, magnificent live oaks, and a slower-paced way of life. Of the charming towns across the state , there’s one in particular that embraces visitors with a sense of tranquility and an extra dose of Southern hospitality. 

Edisto Island, one of South Carolina’s Sea Islands, is just an hour south of the Holy City’s peninsula — and its landscape, history, and people have created a rich cultural destination. “Edisto Island is a place where time has moved and is moving very slowly. We have no traffic lights, high rises, or chain restaurants,” says Thaddeus Daise, who was born and raised on the island and serves as a commissioner on the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission and as a director of the Edisto Island Open Land Trust . “The residents are friendly, caring, and accepting to all.”

While a popular place to vacation, modern-day Edisto Island is also deeply connected to its past. Named after the Edisto Native Americans who inhabited the area in the 1500s, the 68-square-mile island has a history of displacement and resilience. After the Civil War ended, formerly enslaved individuals returned to the area to work as free men and women; cooperatives were organized by Black leaders to eventually purchase the land. Today, Edisto Island is still home to many in the Gullah Geechee community, descendants of the West and Central Africans who were forcefully brought across the Atlantic to work on the area’s plantations. 

Along with typical beach-related activities — of which there are plenty — visitors should take the opportunity to learn more about the roles the island and its inhabitants have played in American history over multiple centuries. “The Edisto Island Museum is chock-full of interesting history of the island, and we have a brand-new permanent exhibit celebrating the rich Gullah culture that is such an important part of Edisto Island,” says Gretchen Smith, director of the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society.

“There are no hotels here, only vacation rental homes and condos, which adds to its quaint charm,” says Chelsea Harrison, executive director at the Edisto Chamber of Commerce . If you’re looking to stay overnight on the island, search Airbnb or Vrbo for short-stay rentals — we rounded up a few of the best listings below. 

Relaxing Water View Home

Grab your family or a group of friends and rent out this three-bed, 3.5-bath home on the island. It sleeps eight total, and there’s even a deck and patio for extra room (and the opportunity to dine al fresco). 

Marshfront Villa in the Trees 

If you want 360-degree marsh views, you’ll get them at this three-bedroom villa . Vaulted ceilings and “jungle surf” decor define the overall look and feel of the interior, and there are several outdoor porches where you can soak up the sights and sounds of a Lowcountry evening. 

Creek Cottage

This is the type of rental you book to truly unplug. The two-bedroom cottage is outfitted with a front porch facing the tidal creek, and guests can access a shared dock. 

Sulla Sabbia

It doesn’t get more “beachfront” than Sulla Sabbia , a four-bedroom home featuring a wall of windows overlooking the ocean. The property is ideal for larger parties, as it can sleep up to 10 people. 

Built in 2016, Junglelow is a two-bedroom cottage that boasts a large screened porch, an outdoor shower, and a sizable deck. Perfect for visitors who love to cook, the home also features an open kitchen as well as a fish-cleaning station in the garage.

Spend a day at Edisto Beach.

On the southern end of the island, you’ll find Edisto Beach and its 4.5 miles of peaceful coastline. To access the beach, visitors need to pay the $8 entrance fee to enter the state park. The cost is worth it, though, as you have the chance to experience excellent shelling, fossil hunting, and incredible sunrises. “To round out the perfect day, I would head to the end of our beach where the sunsets are absolutely gorgeous, equipped with dolphin sightings and all,” says Harrison.

Dive into the island’s history at the Edisto Island Museum and the Hutchinson House.

The Edisto Island Museum’s hours vary based on the time of year, but from March through October, it’s open Tuesday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Along with the exhibitions, there’s also a gift shop and books on the Gullah Geechee community and the island in its entirety. 

Another way to learn about Edisto Island’s past is to visit the Hutchinson House. “The Hutchinson House is the oldest home of a former slave on the island,” says Daise. “The house is currently being restored by the Edisto Island Open Landtrust (EIOLT).” There’s a trail around the grounds that visitors can explore while the house undergoes its final phase of restoration, and, according to the EIOLT , the plan is to open the house to the public in 2024. 

Head to Botany Bay, the island's nature reserve.

“The road leading to [Botany Bay] is one of the most photographed on the island,” says Smith. Within the 4,600 acres of the Botany Bay Plantation Wildlife Management Area , there are two former plantations as well as several outbuildings, freshwater ponds, a beach, and a maritime forest. “The beach is sometimes referred to as ‘Boneyard Beach’ because [of] the fallen trees that have been bleached out by the sun and weather,” says Daise.  

Bring the whole family to the Edisto Island Serpentarium.

Combining education and adventure, the Edisto Island Serpentarium houses more than 20 adult American alligators, many different types of turtles, venomous and nonvenomous snakes, and three different lizard species. “The Serpentarium is great for kids and adults who like snakes, gators, etc. They do a really great job, especially with their presentations on snakes. They do one on gators, too, along with [daily] feedings,” says Smith. 

Explore the island by hiking, biking, or taking a guided boat tour. 

To get the full Edisto Island experience, you’ll want to see as much of the area as possible, whether by foot, bike, or boat. Harrison recommends a “scenic boat tour of [the] creeks and marshes to experience the beauty of the ACE Basin,” and Botany Bay Ecotours offers a variety of programs, including Edisto’s African American Journey, Beachcombing Walking Tour, and the Dolphin Boat Ecotour.

Ella & Ollie's

Ella & Ollie's , or “E & O's," appears on most Edisto Island guides — and with good reason. “They use local fresh seafood and produce as a staple at the restaurant,” says Daise. Led by Brandon and Katherine Rushing, the restaurant’s dinner menu features items like tomato pie, shrimp and grits, and she-crab soup. 

Briny Swine

The Rushings also own Briny Swine , a smokehouse and raw bar restaurant that's “equally worth checking out,” according to Daise. Buttermilk hoe cakes and buffalo blue cheese fried oysters are served alongside ribs, wings, and pulled pork sandwiches. Just make sure to save room for the dessert selection, which includes Southern classics like coconut cake and banana pudding. 

Whaley’s Store

In a building that once served as a gas station and convenience store, Whaley’s serves up seafood and dive bar food to both island locals and visitors. Burgers, fried mahi-mahi bites, fried dill pickle chips, and oysters are all on deck. Whaley’s also hosts karaoke on Monday nights as well as live entertainment throughout the year. 

Edisto Seafood and Flowers Seafood Company

If you don’t want to eat at a restaurant, there’s another option. “Our two local seafood shops, Edisto Seafood and Flowers Seafood Company , sell shrimp fresh out of the ocean for you to prepare yourself,” says Harrison. “Try it in a Lowcountry Boil if you want to eat like the locals.”

The SeaCow Eatery

For what Daise calls the “absolute best breakfast on the island,” make your way to The SeaCow Eatery . Open for more than 25 years — although it’s changed hands a few times — The SeaCow is where you go for a substantial breakfast. “Moo La La” French toast, “Moo Mania” home fries topped with eggs, mushrooms, onions, and sausage gravy, and the six-egg John’s Omelet are equally as delicious as they are unforgettable.

Summer may have beautiful beach weather, but fall is the best time to visit Edisto Island. “Temperatures start to cool but the weather is still great for getting outdoors, rates are lower, and the beaches are less crowded,” says Harrison. Plus, she adds, “There is no shortage of things to do with a ton of local events going on.” This year, fall events include the Cookin' on the Creek BBQ Festival and the Edisto Plein Air Paint Out; all Edisto Island happenings can be found here . 

Travelers should, however, be aware of hurricane season. Hurricane activity typically peaks from late August to early September, but the season runs from June through the end of November.

Charleston International Airport (CHS) is about a 50-minute drive from Edisto Island — you’ll skip a majority of the downtown Charleston traffic — and the drive from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) will be around an hour and 40 minutes. “It is one way on and one way off,” says Daise, which means you’ll need a car to get on the island itself. 

“We call it ‘EdisSLOW’ for a reason. No one goes over 35 mph here… and you can get anywhere you need to in a golf cart or [by] bike,” says Harrison. While you can’t bring your own golf cart, you can rent one from Island Bikes and Outfitters or Infinity Cart Rentals . “Please check out our website for some tips on local golf cart etiquette if you do,” she adds.

You will want to explore the creeks and marshes on an eco-tour, sunset cruise or boat tour guided by experienced local captains. Commune with dolphins, view plantation homes from the water and visit secluded beaches for some prime time shelling. Take a guided tour, rent a kayak or stand up paddle board and explore the waters yourself. Enjoy a bird watching excursion or search for fossils in one of our parks.

After you explore the Island via water, take a drive down the live oak lanes of Edisto and the surrounding lowcountry. Land tours are available and each tour is unique in its own way, presenting history and legend via various perspectives. Be sure to visit Botany Bay Plantation where you can kayak, hike to the boneyard beach, or travel by car through the driving loop to access points of interest for birding and nature enthusiasts. Get Outdoors & Play

With over four miles of biking trails that take you on a scenery-filled loop through Edisto Beach and into the Edisto State Park and Botany Bay Wildlife Conservation Area , biking is very popular on Edisto. If you did not bring your own, you can rent a bike or a kayak to see the natural wonders of the Island. You can always load up your beach gear in a golf cart and head over to the closest access for a relaxing day at the beach. While you’re at Edisto State Park, make time to visit their Environmental Learning Center, that offers youth and adult programs, hands-on interactive exhibits, a touch tank and a movie theater! Before you go, be sure to check out their event calendar to see what fun activities they have going on.

If you crave outdoor activity, play some lowcountry golf at one of our local golf courses . Immerse yourself in the rich cultural history of Edisto Island at the Edisto Island Museum or visit one of the interactive shows at the Serpentarium Reptile Zoo and Gift Shop. You could always decide to spend a long day under the shade of an umbrella with that book that has been calling your name. Life is not complicated on Edisto, just choose your pleasure.

Top 5 Know Before you Go Tips for Edisto Beach State Park

How to Get to Edisto Beach State Park

This park is an hour’s drive from downtown Charleston or 2.25 hours from Columbia, SC.

If you’re coming from upstate, we recommend staying for a beach weekend getaway. See the Cabins & Camping section below.

Between the beach and the saltmarsh trails, Edisto Beach State Park will keep you busy all day. But if you’re looking for a shorter visit, bike the trails and be in and out in a couple hours.

Charleston has an international airport accommodating flights from just about anywhere. Direct domestic flights aren’t unheard of, but more often you’ll connect through Charlotte or Atlanta first.

Edisto Beach State Park is only an hour from the Charleston airport. (see previous movie quote, lol)

Pro Tip : Consider starting your Charleston adventure with a stay at Edisto Beach State Park for the first few days and then moving on to the city during the week, when hotel prices are cheaper.

How much does it cost to visit Edisto Beach State Park?

A modest $8 entrance fee per adult helps maintain park buildings, boardwalks, and trails, as well as helps protect loggerhead sea turtles’ nests in late summer and early fall.

Cabins and camping sites vary in cost. Cabins range from $130 to $198 per night, depending on the season. Camp sites vary from $25 to $65 per night, again depending on season but also depending on which campground you choose.

What to Do at Edisto Beach State Park

Relax on a beach, fish on Big Bay Creek, or bike the trails. Whether you spend a day or a week here, there’s plenty to do.

Go to the Beach

It’s right there in the name. Less crowded and less touristy than the other beaches closer to Charleston , this is a great option for a low-key beach getaway.

You can even camp just steps away from the beach at the Beach Campground.

See a Baby Sea Turtle (If You’re Very Lucky!)

Loggerhead sea turtles nest on Edisto Island every year between May and October. Mom turtles lay their eggs May through August and then the turtle hatchlings begin emerging July through October.

If you’re very lucky, you may witness a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling making its way into the ocean for the very first time!

Sea turtles are protected, and it’s illegal for you touch or disturb them in any way!

Specific guidelines must be followed during sea turtle nesting season to ensure visitors don’t inadvertently hurt the turtles. Park rangers will let you know all about it when you arrive.

The biggest thing to remember: NO LIGHTS on the beach at night. It confuses the turtles.

Ask a ranger about a guided night walk on the beach if you want to see the turtles safely.

Speaking of camping, Edisto Beach State Park has two campgrounds : the Beach Campground and the Live Oak Campground, located in the salt marsh.

Both have great views; you can’t go wrong here.

Camping reservations usually require a two-night minimum stay . This may be flexible in non-peak season. Prices are always slightly higher on weekends than weekdays.

Camp sites can be reserved online up to 13 months ahead of time . Sea turtle nesting season is popular and will sell out quickly.

✳️ THE BEACH CAMPGROUND

Pro : Direct beach access from the campground!

Con : Reservation fees are a tad higher here than the other campground and these sites tend to sell out further ahead of time .

All 67 camp sites in this campground have access to water and electric hookup, and some sites can accommodate RV’s up to 40ft. Prices range from $45 to $65 per night, depending on season.

Tent campers are welcome to reserve these beach sites as well, but don’t expect a discount. You’re paying for that beach access!

✳️ THE LIVE OAK CAMPGROUND

Pro : Amazing sunsets on the marsh! Reservation fees are slightly cheaper than at the Beach Campground.

Con : Not on the beach

This campground has 5 primitive, tent-only campsites and 50 water/electric hook up sites for tents or RV camping. The primitive sites are almost always $25 per night, but the rest vary a bit more depending on season, from $35 to $50 per night.

If you like to fish, this is the better campground as it’s easy access to Scott Creek.

For those that like the outdoors but also prefer an indoor space with modern conveniences, Edisto Beach State Park offers cabin rentals.

Cabins are fully furnished and include everything , such as bed linens and cookware. A hotel experience but in the state park, closer to the action.

Cabins are all located in the marsh/Scott Creek area in the west part of the park , near but not in the Live Oak Campground. Turn right onto the gravel road at the state park sign and stop at the office to check in. Once checked in, continue straight back on that same entrance road to reach the cabins.

Bring your own food, or buy groceries at the grocery store across from the park’s beach entrance, and you’re good to go for the week!

There are 7 cabins available: 5 one-bedroom cabins and 2 three-bedroom cabins.

The one-bedroom cabins can sleep up to 4 adults with one queen bed in the bedroom and another queen murphy/wall bed in the main area. The three-bedroom cabins accommodate up to 6 adults with a queen bed in each room.

Cabins sometimes require a minimum 7-day stay. Visit the state parks’ reservation system online or call the park office for details.

Boating & Fishing

Big Bay Creek and the marsh area can be accessed via the park’s convenient boat ramp off of Oyster Row Lane in the westernmost part of the park.

To get here, you’ll turn right before you see any other signs for the state park. The educational center is also located back here.

The beach is equally beautiful on a bright sunny day or watching storm clouds roll in. Sunsets over the marsh and Big Bay Creek are not to be missed!

The Spanish Mount and Scott Creek Trails both offer hidden views of the marsh and Scott Creek , with plenty of wildlife-spotting opportunities.

Trails: Biking & Hiking

The park’s trails are all in the western portion of the park, away from the beach. In total, it’s about 4 miles of trails. If you’re planning to hike: bring bug spray! Not a bad idea for the bikers, either.

All trails are bike accessible and fairly level , but some are bumpier than others.

The Forest Loop trail is rough on a bike , with all the tree roots. Unlike the other trails in the park, this one is not a cleared, sandy path. Walking this trail is easier on your joints and let’s you admire the trees more.

The Spanish Mount Trail and Scott Creek Trail have the best marsh views. Big Bay Trail is really just a connector trail between the Education Center and the Spanish Mount.

The Bache (Monument) Trail is short and includes several informational signs to explain land surveying before you reach the survey monument.

Historical Sights

Edisto Beach State Park protects and preserves two historical sights: the Spanish Mount and the Bache Monument.

The Spanish Mount is an ancient mound of oyster shells created by the Native American Edisto tribe in 2000 BC. It’s basically an ancient trash heap that has been reclaimed by the marsh, but ancient trash heaps can tell you a lot about a civilization, so this area is protected.

The Bache Monument is one of the original survey monuments used to accurately measure and map the east coast of the United States for the first time in the mid-1800’s. The trail to the monument has several info plaques to help explain this.

Alexander Bache was Benjamin Franklin’s great-grandson and he created a reliable tool to accurately measure distances for surveying.

They didn’t have GPS to pinpoint their locations, so they used concrete monuments to mark baselines from which more lines could be measured until you have an accurate map.

11 Reasons Why You Should Visit Edisto Island, South Carolina

In the Lowcountry of South Carolina, an hour drive from Charleston is Edisto Island.  Time has virtually stood still on this small, barrier island. You won’t find any high-rises or hotels–there are none.  The island has a handful of decent restaurants, a couple of beach item shops, one grocery store, a seafood market, one farm stand, and a gas station/convenience store. The only big brand name on the island is Wyndham, which runs time-share condominiums and a golf course.

The two-lane, Route 174 is the only way on and off the island. Traffic lights don’t exist and golf carts are allowed on the road. Bike lanes abound. The drive along the main road is flanked by acres of marshland with tall grass growing and the occasional egrets hidden in the grass. Massive live oak trees adorned by Spanish moss line the roads creating a welcoming canopy of branches overhead.

You will find is a quiet island with a fabulous beach, stretching from the ocean to around the horn to the sound. It’s a place where the popular mode of transportation is not a car, but a golf cart or bicycle. Kids can roam around unaccompanied on their bikes, go for ice cream or just walk around without worry. We knew this would be a perfect getaway for our family. We didn’t want the crowds of Hilton Head or the ritz of Kiawah Island. Edisto was our ideal location. We rented a house a block from the beach for a week. We packed the car, strapped the bikes to the bike rack, put the kids and dogs in the car, and started our 9-hour road trip from Baltimore. Destination: a week of relaxation mixed with some exploration.

Saltwater Eco Tours

If there is one tour you should do in Edisto, The Saltwater Eco Tour is it. Saltwater Eco Tours explores the Ace Basin, comprised of the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers. Captain Philip, the owner, is well-versed and passionate about the area. A wealth of information, he is excited to share with those on his trip. His professional background is geology, and he is also a certified naturalist.

We reserved a 3-hour tour of the Ashepoo River but, due to weather, we had to change it to the Edisto River. We were in no way disappointed by our change. The trip took us through the marine landscape of the Lowcountry. Along the way we encountered dolphins swimming next to the boat, discovered some migrating birds, and learned a great deal about the flora of the region. Seeing the Lowcountry of South Carolina from the water gave it an entire new perspective. We would have never been able to see the migratory birds hiding in the grasses nor have such a close encounter of dolphins.  The Saltwater Eco Tour outfitter is a great way to really immerse and learn about the river basin.

Edisto Beach Shrimp Boat Charters

We wanted to give our kids a chance to see how the wild shrimp are caught and brought to the plate. We booked a morning shrimping and fishing with Edisto Beach Shrimp Boat Charters. Captain Clif skippers the Miss Ellen, a miniature shrimp trawler built especially for tours.

We booked for a morning of fishing and shrimping. Captain Clif warned us that were a little bit early in the shrimp season and that we would, most likely, not catch a big haul of shrimp. Since we didn’t know when we would have the chance to go shrimping again, we were okay with the possibility of a lean catch. Once offshore, Captain Clif and his mate (his son) released the shrimp net (a trawl) and let it hit the bottom. The net scraped the bottom of the ocean for 15 minutes before they hauled it up.

I didn’t expect much of a catch, but what came up in the net caught me off guard. The amount of bycatch caught, other fish that came in with the net, was a bit shocking. There were rays, fish, crabs, and some jellyfish. What was even more upsetting is that instead of throwing the other fish back immediately, the captain and his son dragged their feet while the fish flopped around on the deck. They eventually were thrown back in, but it may have been too late for them to survive. It was an eye-opening experience of how much ecological impact shrimping has.

In the end, we were able to take home about 2 dozen shrimp, which I guess was good for the season. We sauteed them in butter and garlic. Because they were just caught, the meat was sweet and extremely tender. I have never had a chance to try same-day, fresh caught shrimp. It was a treat.

Botany Bay Plantation

The Botany Bay Plantation is a wildlife and heritage preserve located right outside of Edisto Beach, on the Island. Although most of the original plantation structures are long-gone, it is definitely worth a visit. Originally the area was used for farming and cotton growing; it is now a wildlife sanctuary with a 6-mile, self-guided tour.  

Upon entering the preserve, we drove under massive live oaks, arching over the road. At the first parking lot, we stopped at a small stand with information about the area and a driving guide that we took along with us for the journey. The guide is numbered with descriptions and history of what you will see at each location. The entire drive takes only 15-20 minutes. The pleasant drive provides plenty to see, including the massive live oaks, plenty of birds, and some of the original plantation structures. We even saw an alligator taking in a leisurely swim in one of the swampy pond areas.

After the drive tour we went to visit the beach area, known as Boneyard Beach. The 10-minute walk to the beach from the parking lot gave us a close-up view of the Lowcountry’s grassy marsh areas. We were there during low tide and saw hundreds of oyster beds lining the area. There were hundreds of little crabs scurrying around in the muddy marsh as well.

When we hit the beach, we immediately realized why they called it Boneyard Beach. Sprawled all along the shoreline as far as were could see, were the skeletons of live oak trees.  The massive branches were distorted and creeping up from the sand. It was a beautiful and somewhat eerie experience. We took a stroll along the beach, stopping to explore the dead trees and take some photos.

A Day on Edisto Beach

Edisto Island beach wraps around the island with two distinct parts. One is the section of beach on the Atlantic, which is filled with surf. The other is on the sound, which has no waves. During our visit, it was a bit too cold to sit and soak in the sun, but that didn’t stop us from taking the dogs and kids for some great walks along the shore. With its long coastline and few people, Edisto’s beach is a great place to relax and soak up some sun. There are no lifeguards, so make sure to keep an eye on the kids if they plan to swim.

I loved the fact that there were no storefronts or restaurants along the beach (the only exception is a single building with shops and a bar at the start of the beach). There were only dunes and homes. Since it was too cold to sit on the beach, there was no need to bring drinks or food, but I can imagine during the summer months, the beach would be a great spot to camp out for the day with a big picnic and plenty of toys and games to play.

Edisto State Park

Edisto State Park is a great place to take a break from the beach and get on some trails. A total of 4 miles of trail snake through the park, with some leading to the Edisto River. The cost for visiting the trail is $8/per person. Pets are allowed. We walked a total of 2 ½ miles of trail, starting on Spanish Mount Trail and taking Scotts Creek trail back to our car. These are easy trails, all flat; you can also bike on them. Throughout the trails, we saw plenty of massive live oaks, some shore birds, egrets, snowy egrets and some hawks. Our walk was peaceful, with only a few other people. We passed swampy areas as well as walking by some of the marshy grass areas. It’s a nice and easy walk and made us feel like we were in the wilds of the Lowcountry.

Experiencing a Lowcountry boil

A visit to the Lowcountry should not go without trying a Lowcountry boil. We love seafood and when we read about this dish, we knew we had to give it a try. A Lowcountry boil is a dish consisting of corn on the cob, mild sausage, red potatoes and shrimp, lots of shrimp and crab if in season. The dish is boiled with seasoning and water. Unlike a bouillabaisse, the liquid is drained prior to eating. It is best served while hot. Prepare to get a bit messy, we did, but it is totally worth it. Flower Seafood Company has a food truck behind its store, which serves prepared food as well as boils. Call ahead with your order.

A low country boil is a perfect summertime family feast. It is easy to recreate and feeds plenty. Get the above mentioned ingredients and add some spice and get boiling.

Magnolia Plantation

We decided to visit the Magnolia Plantation after learning about its famous romantic gardens. The plantation is about an hour from Edisto (in suburban Charleston) and is great for a morning outing. We bought tickets which included a visit through gardens, a tour of the house, and a self-guided swamp tour. Unfortunately, we couldn’t experience the enslaved quarter tour, as it was fully booked. We walked around the gardens for a bit before our timed house tour. The gardens were wonderfully curated. Our kids quickly discovered the peacocks roaming the around which, of course, took their attention off anything but the peacocks.

The house tour, although interesting and well detailed, did not hold the kids’ attention for long. They just went through the motion of going from room to room, while staring off somewhere else.  

After visiting the home, we got in the car and drove to the plantation’s swamp tour. The entire area takes about 40 minutes to walk through. A wooden boardwalk is elevated over the swamp. It was quiet and beautiful, and the only noise came from the occasional passing bird. As we went deeper into the swamp, we did come across a lake. Here we saw an amazing amount of wildlife. There were egrets, snowy egrets, great blue herons, turtles, alligators and some little lizards. We stopped for a while to observe before finishing the tour. I do recommend this part of the plantation, especially if you love wildlife.

A Day in Charleston

We spent a day visiting to Charleston. While I researched activities, my husband planned the day around food. He also insisted on bringing the dogs, which limited the things we could do. We still made the best of our day and fit in a lot.

Our first stop was a barbeque restaurant a little bit outside of downtown, called Rodney Scott. Rodney Scott is one of the very few barbecue shops that is a James Beard award winner; here it’s for Best Chef, Southeast. We knew we couldn’t miss it while visiting Charlotte. Rodney Scott is known for his experience of cooking the whole hog and cooking it evenly and to perfection. It is a labor of love rooted in tradition and family history to cook a large, splayed hog over hot coals.

Where we live, we can’t find good barbeque. We all went hog wild (sorry, couldn’t help the pun) and ordered the whole hog plate as well as the brisket.  The plate is an 8oz serving of pork along with two sides, 2 slices of white bread, and finished with a bit of barbeque sauce on the side. I happen to love the barbeque sauce for its tangy vinegar spice. My husband is from Texas and insists that barbeque is eaten without sauce. We ate outdoors with our two dogs. The meat was tender and smokey. Interestingly, the brisket was also pulled. The sides were all perfectly cooked and seasoned. We devoured our plates and finished off with banana pudding.

After our lunch, we headed downtown to explore Charleston. We booked a tour but had some time prior. To pass the time we walked through the historic downtown, looking at the beautiful and massive mansions that overlooked the water. We also stopped to admire Rainbow Row, which is a row of homes brightly painted in all colors. We shopped a little and rested at an outdoor café until our tour.

Lost Stories of Black Charleston

Charleston has many wonderful, historic tours both on foot and on horse and carriage. Many tell stories of Charleston’s past, take visitors through hidden alleyways, and point out historic homes. The Lost Stories of Black Charleston, a truly unique tour, tells the stories of black Charleston that are typically left out of the books. Damon Fordham, the tour guide, is a writer/author, historian, teacher, and licensed tour guide. His tour tells the history of heroes and heroines both pre and post-reconstruction. He also traces his family back to Charleston’s beginnings, weaving his ancestors in and out of some of his stories.

Professor Fordham walks throughout the city relating his stories to locations throughout the city. In total, it is a 2-hour tour with a bathroom break. I recommend this for older children. Our youngest is 11 and was fully engaged. Younger kids may lose attention rather quickly. These stories keep alive a past that has not received enough attention and acknowledgment.

We finished our day in Charleston by eating outdoors at The Ordinary. The Ordinary dedicates its menu to serving local, fresh, and high-quality seafood. We definitely took advantage of this by starting off our meal with the largest seafood platter they had. Our daughter devoured the oysters, our son ate the lobster in seconds, and we enjoyed with clams, mussels, smoked fish pate, and snapper ponzu. Everything was fresh and well-crafted.

Mcleod Plantation

I really wanted to visit the McLeod Plantation. Its focus is on the enslaved people and descendants who lived there, worked the fields, built the houses, and managed the property. Up until 1990, some of the descendants of the freed people still lived in the tenant homes on the property.  The day we went, there was a storm headed towards Charleston with the potential for tornadoes. The plantation decided to close early. We managed to get in for the 30-minutes before closing, but we were not able to do the tour. This is a prime example of how things don’t always go as planned while traveling, but you make the best of it.

Bicycling on Edisto

Edisto Island is the perfect place to take a bike out for a ride. The island even has bike paths throughout. Most people on the island are either riding a bike or taking a golf cart out to get around. We brought our bikes and felt completely comfortable sending the kids out to ride their bikes to get ice-cream. They rode bikes the entire time without worry about busy roads and lots of traffic. It was a great way for them to discover the island and have that sense of independence. Another great destination for biking around is Lewes Beach, Delaware . You will find plenty of bike trails and not busy roads.

Where to Eat on Edisto Island

Don’t expect Michelin star restaurants on Edisto or a great variety of places to eat. You won’t find it. What you will find are a handful of local eateries serving up good, comfort type food. We ate at a couple restaurants but did many meals at the rental home. Some were not open, and some did not have outdoor seating. It was Covid, we were only eating outdoors at the time.

McConkeys Jungle Shack

We ate lunch at this small, friendly, beach shack restaurant. The kids met us there on their bikes; we walked and we brought the dogs along. The deck was small and comfortable with plenty of room for the dogs.

The service was great, and the food came out quickly–important when you have young kids. McConkeys is a burger/sandwich place also serving fried seafood. Kids ordered seafood and we ordered sandwiches. It was a solid meal, and the portions were on the larger side.  Overall, it’s a great place for an easy, quick, but good meal.

 SeaCow Eatery

The night we ate at the SeaCow seemed to be an off night for the place. Maybe they weren’t ready for the amount of people during the off-season. The SeaCow is another restaurant that offers sandwiches, an array of seafood, both grilled and fried as well and entrees. Although pleasant, the order was messed up and food came out slowly. The deck wraps around the restaurant with plenty of seating. I can imagine in the summer it is a great place to eat outdoors. However, when we went it wasn’t so great.

Whaleys seems like a local, neighborhood bar/restaurant that has been on Edisto Island for years. Our rental home was across the street from Whaleys. The night we arrived, we were tired from driving 9 hours and wanted to grab a bite to eat.

We sat outside, but quickly were informed they weren’t serving the outdoor tables. They offered us indoor seating. It was Covid. It was packed inside. We decided to order to go. We put the order in and went to our house to wait. They never called. After an hour, I went to check. They forgot to put in our order. That was my first impression of Whaleys.

We gave Whaleys another try after our shrimping expedition. We were tired and hungry and wanted to go back to the house. My husband was a bit sick from the shrimp boat and the kids were hungry.  I went to Whaleys to put in a lunch order to go. Second time was a better experience. We ordered a shrimp BLT, burger, and more fried shrimp. It was ready within 15 minutes, and the food was rather good. The seafood fresh, my BLT was large with large shrimp and the burger was solid and cooked to order.

Ella & Ollies

This is one of the nicer restaurants on Edisto Island. The interior of the restaurant was set with candles, nice tableware and comfortable wood chairs. We however were eating outdoors. The outdoor patio was not quite as nice. It was bare, plastic chairs, and not very spacious. A bit surprising after seeing the interior of the restaurant. We had to wait a bit for service. Once someone did come, the service was consistent and good. We split some pizzas to start followed by an array of entrees. Overall, the food was good, but no wow factor.

Edisto Island sounds ideal! I love the old-fashioned beach towns. There are lots of these sleepy little places in NJ and FL, but I’ve never checked out the beaches in the Carolinas – glad to have this on my radar.

Wow. I’ve never been to South Carolina and have never heard of Edisto Island. This looks incredible. The shrimping experience sounds interesting. I would totally love that but would be bothered by them being so irresponsible with the other live creatures. I bet that fresh shrimp was terrific though!

Edisto is fantastic. I go a lot. Everything can’t always be perfect and if you think it should then get a job in a restaurant and see if you can make it so.

Edisto Island is a terrible place to visit. The beach is no good, and there’s nothing to do. You’d be better off going to Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach!

Visited there 10 years ago this past week it was great loved the placed been meaning to take another vacation there. But they had the hurricane one year heard they had alot to rebuild. Then last year with covid. Hopefully I can schedule a family vacation there next year. If the prices stay reasonable.

We live in Saint Louis but try to come to Edisto (described as Edistslow by locals-a nod to the pace of life here) yearly. That said, I put a couple of your suggestions on our list for this week. We have never heard of McLeod Plantation so that’s a must and through all of our trips here we have never taken the ecotours. I’ve booked that as well. Whaleys is exactly what you said-a multigeneration neighborhood bar but the take out is usually quick. We had takeout fro SeaCow last night and that too was quick-like 10 minutes wait. This was an interesting article.

Shell Island in Edisto Beach, SC

Shell seeking is one of the most beloved activities vacationers take part in every summer on Edisto Beach, but there’s one place on the island that is a must-see for any seashell lover.

Shell Island is the nickname given to a sandbar island just across from Jeremy’s Inlet. This area can be seen by walking down the section of the beach in front of the beach campground of the South Carolina State Park. During low tide, it seems possible to walk across the inlet and onto the island, but the currents are very strong and the tide changes quickly making it possible to get stranded on the island.

A better way to get to the island is to call Edisto native Captain Ron Elliott at (843) 869-1937. Capt. Ron will take shell seekers out on a boat and leave them on the island for about two hours. Once on the island, visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of shells scattered on the island.

Many of the shells are bleached from years of direct sunlight that shines down and whitens the sand of the island. Several shells are in excellent condition making it possible to bring home some natural souvenirs from an Edisto vacation.

Shells on the island include the butterfly-shaped Angelwings, slender Wentletraps, spiny Apple murexes, scalloped calicos and cockles, Atlantic Jacknives, Slippersnails, Surfcalms, and Wing Oysters, Banded Tulips, Whelks, Channeled Duckclams, Wentletraps, and more.

It’s also possible to find hermit crabs scuttling about over shells and in the sand, but they generally prefer to be left alone.

Other treasures on Shell Island include sharks teeth, horseshoe crab shells, sun-bleached driftwood, sand dollars, starfish, sea glass, and fossils. Loggerhead turtle nests also dot the land, but are not to be disturbed.

Although it is possible to swim in the water off Shell Island, the undertow is slightly stronger than the undertow off of front beach, so swimmers are urged to take safety measures before entering the water. It’s also likely that small sand sharks are in the water (along with dolphin, turtles, jellyfish, and a host of other sea creatures) so always be on the lookout.

No trip to Edisto is complete without a visit to Shell Island at least once to see all the hidden treasures of the area.

GETTING TO CAPTAIN RON’S: Once an appointment has been made to go to Shell Island, visitors can get to Capt. Ron’s by taking Botany Bay Road past the AME church and follow the road until it dead ends. A sign for his eco-tours will be visible from the road.

Located in Green Pond on land once used for rice cultivation, the property features a historic rice field system now managed to attract waterfowl and other migratory birds. Donnelley is part of the ACE Basin ecosystem and is one of 17 SC sites designated a global Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society. Edisto River Canoe & Kayak Trail The Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail is a recreational gem comprised of a series of access sites and points of interest along a 62-mile stretch of the Edisto River’s Main Stem. The trail starts at Green Pond Church Landing and meanders eastward past Colleton State Park.  At roughly the halfway point in the trail, the river passes Givhans Ferry State Park.  The trail officially ends at Lowndes Landing.  With ample camping and access throughout its length, the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail offers a variety of single and multi-day trips for all ability levels.
