Izmir cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-05-26 04:10

Port Izmir cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Izmir, Turkey. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Izmir is a major seaport and Turkey's 3rd most populous city (following Istanbul and Ankara (country's capital)) with population over 3 million (metro around 4,3 million). Approx 50 km (31 mi) to the south is the world's 4th-largest shipbreaking facility - Aliaga .

Port Izmir (locode TRIZM) is located on a sheltered bay in Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean), surrounded by mountains on all sides. Besides passenger ships 9ferries and cruise vessels) the port serves large container ships . In October 2018, APM Terminals ( The Hague -based international container terminal operator ) signed an agreement to divest Izmir Aliaga Terminal, selling it to SOCAR Turkiye. APM Terminals will continue to manage the facility, which will be operated by Petlim (fully-owned by SOCAR subsidiary). The renamed Petlim Container Terminal is ranked the largest in Aegean Turkey, and country's 3rd largest (after Istanbul-Ambarli, and Mersin), with annual capacity around 1,3 million TEUs (containers).

The seaport is also used as gateway to Turkey's ancient sites Ephesus (among world's largest religious and archaeological sites) and Sardis (ancient city in Manisa Province). The city has an Archaelogical Museum with an unique collection of artifacts from these areas. The bazaar (city market) is second only to Istanbul's. Cruise ship tourists can also visit Cesme Peninsula popular for its picturesque villages and beautiful beaches.

In September 2022 was inaugurated the ferry route directly linking Turkey and Greece - Izmir with Thessaloniki via Mytilene/Lesbos Island .. The project was initiated in 2011. The Ä°zmir-Thessaloniki route is currently served by the Athens-based company Levanta Ferries with the RoPax ship Smyrna di Levante (1977-built, IMO 7527887, passenger capacity 950, cargo capacity 300 cars plus 55 lorries/semi-trailer trucks). The new passenger shipping service is provided once weekly, with crossing time ~12-13 hours (depending on sea/weather conditions). The maiden voyage departed from Thessaloniki on October 10, 2022.

Izmir (as Smyrna) was established in the early-11th century BC. In late-7th century BC, the town was devastated by the Lydians, in the 4th century BC restored by the Macedonians and later conquered by the Romans. Smyrna was part of the Byzantine Empire (330-1453) during the 4th century AD. In 1415 it became part of the Ottoman Empire (1299-1923). After WW1 (1914-1918) Greece claimed Izmir, but in 1922 the Greeks were driven out by the Turkish forces.

The city boasts a busy schedule of exhibitions, congresses and trade fairs. izmir's local festival and the fair are held in the huge inner city park (Kulturpark) during September's first days. International Izmir Festival (mid-June until mid-July) is also held annually. During the festival, world-class performers (orchestras, soloists, dance companies, musical groups) give live concerts and recitals at various venues in the city and its surrounding areas, including at the ancient theatres of Ephesus and Metropolis (close to Torbalı).

The city of İzmir , the third largest in the land, is now home to well over three million people. Many travellers give it a wide berth, but it certainly has some merit, not least its enviable position straddling the head of a 50km-long gulf. Surrounded on all sides by mountains, it’s arrayed like a gigantic amphitheatre, with the Ionian Sea functioning as a sort of never-ending show.

A boat trip across İzmır bay

The international i̇zmır festival.

Site of ancient Smyrna , İzmir has a long and illustrious history. Its current incarnation is rather more modern, particularly in the swanky, bar-filled Alsancak area just north of the centre, the Konak shopping area to the south, and the coastal road that binds them together. However, a bustling bazaar district, parks and a clutch of grand old buildings are remnants of a glorious past. One negative point is that the weather, though mild for much of the year, gets stinking hot in the summer – there are no city beaches to escape to, but the Çeşme peninsula is not too far away.

Brief history

The site of modern İzmir was settled by aboriginal Anatolians as long ago as the third millennium BC. Around 600 BC, Lydian raids sent the area into a long decline; it was recovering tentatively when Alexander the Great appeared in 334 BC. Spurred by a timely dream corroborated by the oracle of Apollo at Claros, Alexander decreed the foundation of a new, better-fortified settlement on Mount Pagos, the flat-topped hill today adorned with the Kadifekale. His generals, Antigonus and Lysimachus, carried out Alexander’s plan after his death, by which time the city bore the name – Smyrna – familiar to the West for centuries after.

Roman rule endowed the city with impressive buildings, but Arab raids in the seventh century AD triggered several centuries of turbulence. Selçuk Turks held the city for two decades prior to 1097, when the Byzantines recaptured it. The thirteenth-century Latin tenure in Constantinople provoked another era of disruption at Smyrna, with Crusaders, Genoese, Tamerlane’s Mongols and minor Turkish emirs jockeying for position. Order was re-established in 1415 by Mehmet I, who finally incorporated the town into the Ottoman Empire , his successors repulsing repeated Venetian efforts to retake it.

Following World War I , Greece was given an indefinite mandate over İzmir and its hinterland. Foolishly, a huge Greek expeditionary force pressed inland, inciting the resistance of the Turkish nationalists under Atatürk. The climactic defeat in the two-year struggle against Greece and her nominal French and Italian allies was the entry into Smyrna of the Turkish army on September 9, 1922. The secular republic not having yet been proclaimed, the reconquest of the city took on the character of a successfully concluded jihad, or holy Muslim war, with three days of murder and plunder. Almost seventy percent of the city burned to the ground and thousands of non-Muslims died. A quarter of a million refugees huddled at the quayside while British, American, French and Italian vessels stood idly by, refusing to grant them safe passage until the third day.

Magical Turkey

Visit Gobekli Tepe and Mount Nemrut in Southeastern Anatolia before proceeding to Cappadocia with its volcanic scenery. After a few days in the valleys, continue to Pamukkale and the ancient city of Ephesus. Your tour starts and ends in Istanbul.

One of İzmir’s best sights is the city itself, seen from the bay it surrounds – at TL6.50 for a return trip, these are by far the Aegean’s cheapest boat trips . Boats head from three docks – Konak, Pasaport and Alsancak – to the best destination, Karşıyaka . Leaving from Pasaport provides the most spectacular trip, crawling past İzmir’s 1970s’ tricolore of white-yellow-brown buildings to Alsancak, before heading across the bay.

Karşıyaka itself is a pleasant part of İzmir, its pedestrianized central street – Kemalpaşa Cad – sporting a clutch of shops, restaurants and cafés. Try eating at Alesta , a small restaurant facing the local mosque, selling cheap seafood sandwiches, and sandwiched itself by two fishmongers.

Many travellers to western Turkey, and İzmir in particular, are surprised by the sight of Africans who are obviously not visitors. Often termed Arap or “Arabs” by other Turks, they are in fact descendants of the large numbers of Sudanese, Somalis, Algerians and Egyptians who were brought to Anatolia during the Ottoman Empire. Many arrived as slaves, forced to work in the tobacco and cotton fields or as household servants, particularly wet-nurses.

Today there are about 20,000 Afro-Turks (as they prefer to be known) in the western Aegean provinces, most of whom live in the mountains between İzmir and Mersin. Speaking fluent Turkish and devoutly Muslim, they are often proud of their Turkish heritage, though intermarriage is rare with other Turks.

The Linchpin of İzmir's summer season is the International İzmir Festival , running from mid-June to early July. It’s a bit of a misnomer since many events take place at various restored venues at Ephesus or Çeşme castle. Tickets run to TL20–100 a head, but 50 percent student discounts are available and the acts featured are often world-class – past names have included the Moscow Ballet, Paco Peña and Ravi Shankar. Get this year’s programme at w iksev.org ; ticket vendors are also listed online.

Sightseeing:

Izmir , historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country's largest port after Istanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea.

Called Punto in old times, Alsancak has been one of the most important residential areas of the city. It is the burning heart of the city. Alsancak has been described in great detail in the works of many travelers and writers of international fame. Victor Hugo, in his poem "Le Captive", published in his book "Les Orientales" (1829), illustrates Izmir whose fame has reached to the Western World, as a princess.

Explore the third largest city in Turkey, known in Turkish as "Beautiful Izmir", the city lies at the head of a long and narrow gulf furrowed by ships and yachts. Behind the palm lined promenades and avenues, which follow the shoreline the city in horizontal terraces, gently ascends the slopes of surrounding mountains.

See: - Konak Square , clock tower, fountain and palm trees, the Bazaar...Truly the lively center of Izmir - Alsancak , small streets with a lot of nice bars in old Greek houses, where you can have tea or a beer and try several water pipe flavors - Kadifekale , old castle on the hill - Agora , remains of the Roman Empire - Visit one of the many museums around Izmir like the Archaeological Museum

Do: - Walk around the very lively Alsancak and have a drink on the Kordon. It has great views over the bay - Go shopping at Kemeralti: A big bazaar, where you can buy clothes & gifts and stop to sip a Turkish tea (inner part mostly closed on Sundays) - Kizlaragasi Hani: An old kervansaray where you can shop for carpets and jewelry - Visit one of the many Thermal Spa's located in Izmir - Go shopping at one of the many Shopping Centers - Take a trip on the ferry to other parts of Izmir, a cheap but great way to see the city. - Visit the beautiful sea side resort town of Cesme, less than one hour's drive from Izmir

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The city if Izmir runs an open hop on/off sightseeing bus, every half an hour showing the major highlights. 10 Euro for a 24 hour ticket. This bus is completely open, so take an umbrella in case of rain or head cover in the heat of summer. The bus leaves right in front of the cruise terminal. In town, a taxi is cheap, and the fares are regulated. They are easy to find. For long journeys, however, drivers can charge more than the meter reads. So negotiate the fare in advance. The most unusual transportation in Turkey is called Dolmus for routes that buses don't take. The word actually means "To Fill"; thus, the dolumus leaves when it is full! They are usually a minibus, a jeep, or a van so they fill quickly. A bonus is that they will drop you off along the route.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

By shore excursion: Pergamon & Asclepion: depart from the pier for a visit to Pergamon, an intellectual center of Asia Minor in antique times and an ancient healing center – Asclepion.

Following a drive through the country side, stop at the ruins of great city of Pergamon – a center of learning and arts, which possessed one of the greatest libraries of antiquity. In Acropolis of Pergamon , above the modern town, are the remains of the celebrated library, a steep and impressive amphitheater, the temples of Trajan and Dyonisus, the monumental altar of Zeus, the sanctuary of Demeter, a gymnasium laid out on three terraces and the Agora.

Next, stop at Asclepion, located to the southwest of the lower city, which was a sanctuary dedicated to the god of health, Asclepios. The healing center, Asclepion, had been something very similar to a modern natural healing clinic. Patients were given exercises, drugs, herbal remedies, or could take the honey cure, drink the waters of the springs to be treated. Snakes were sacred to Asklepios because of their power. Among the famous physicians of the Asclepion was Galen.

Ephesus (Efes) is also on many tour agenda's. This archaeological site dating 1000 BC, with its perfect acoustical theater, temple and baths is about 75 minutes from Izmir.

Shopping and Food

The bazaar of Izmir (the inner part closed on Sundays) is very large and you easily might get lost. However the sightseeing bus has several pick up points around the bazaar. The many stores around the bazaar, which mostly sell the same wares are open on Sundays.

Traditional handicrafts such as carpets, copper goods, painted ceramics and jewelry are popular buys, along with a good selection of leather goods, sandals and beachwear are also in abundance.

In souvenir shops and stalls, it's always worth trying to do some serious haggling. For food shopping, local mini markets provide basic essentials, whilst the supermarkets found are similar to those we are used to at home.

Upscale shopping is close to the port in the Alsancak area. Open 7 days a week. The large Migros supermarket is right across the terminal.

Turkish food is amongst the best in the world. With enough climatic zones to grow most ingredients locally, there is a vast array of produce to excite and entice the palate. Besides its famous kebab dishes, there are many other traditional Turkish foods to choose from. Meze (appetizers) for which Turkey is justly famous, are a range of hundreds of small dishes from simple combinations such as cheese with melon to elaborately stuffed vegetables. These are served in all Turkish restaurants and are traditionally accompanied with Raki, a clear anise- flavored spirit claimed to be Turkey's national alcoholic drink

Turkey's currency is the Turkish Lira. Many shops and restaurants in the coastal resorts and big cities accept payment in foreign currency. But if you are planning to travel to other parts of the country, it is advisable to take some Turkish Lira. Public transport only accepts Lira. With a credit or debit card you can withdraw local currency from cash machines one of which is right outside the terminal.
