Atlantic City Beach Atlantic City Beach free

If you're not visiting Atlantic City to gamble, chances are you're coming to hit the beach. The city's beach is wide and its camel-hued sands are soft – recent travelers said they were impressed with the cleanliness and with how much room there was to spread out on this beach. The Atlantic Ocean's waves are good for body boarding, boogie boarding and wave jumping for the little ones, while adults can enjoy walking along the flat terrain near the water or relaxing in a beach chair. On-site facilities include showers and changing rooms, plus lifeguards are on duty during the summer from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Beachgoers also have access to the boardwalk , which is populated with eateries and shops selling beach gear and water sports equipment.

Unlike many other New Jersey beaches, Atlantic City's sands are free to access – you don't need a fee-based badge or pass to visit. For more information on the beach, visit the tourism board's website .

Atlantic City Boardwalk Atlantic City Boardwalk free

The Boardwalk isn't named after its wooden planks. Its namesake actually comes from its inventor, Alexander Boardman, who developed the walkway in the 1870s. Since then it's remained a hot spot. Four miles long, the Boardwalk runs along the shoreline and is lined with shops, bars, restaurants and amusement park-style games. The popular Steel and Central piers (and their carnival rides) branch off the main stretch.

For some adult visitors, the Atlantic City Boardwalk offers a sense of nostalgia of youthful days perusing through the souvenir shops and going on rides. Other travelers said they enjoyed the diverse array of shops and eateries that line the walkway. A handful of visitors warned that some parts of if are looking worn down and that you may encounter homeless people begging for money.

Atlantic City Casinos Atlantic City Casinos

Atlantic City is practically synonymous with gambling. The seaside city is home to several casinos with everything from slots to table games like blackjack, roulette and poker. Crowd favorites include the casinos at Caesars Atlantic City , the Borgata , Bally's and Resorts, thanks to their clean atmospheres, variety of gaming options and attentive service, according to recent travelers. (Though, some visitors did note the persistent smell of smoke, even in the nonsmoking areas.)

Caesars and Bally's are situated just off of the Atlantic City Boardwalk , which means these casinos are located central to all the action in town and are easy to access. Resorts Casino Hotel is along the northern end of Atlantic City (also just off the boardwalk), situated near Steel Pier. Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is one of the most luxurious casinos in AC; it's also about 2 miles removed from the boardwalk. Plus, the Borgata is home to some highly touted eateries (Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck have restaurants at this property).

Cape May Cape May free

Just about 45 miles south of Atlantic City is a much calmer stretch of Jersey shore – Cape May. Founded in 1620 by the Dutch, Cape May didn't reach its stride until the 1800s when it became a vacation spot for wealthy Southerners who reportedly didn't want to venture much farther into Yankee territory.  Today, vacationers from all over – not just the South – flock to Cape May for its relaxing-bed and-breakfasts (many of them complete with rocking chairs and wraparound porches) and clean, family-friendly beaches. To enjoy Cape May's beaches – from Higbee to Poverty – you'll need to purchase a beach tag. Daily beach tags cost $6 and three-day passes cost $12. You can find beach tags at the beach entrance and adjacent City Hall.

Visiting families loved Cape May and its beaches because of their cleanliness and quiet atmosphere. Many travelers also appreciated the use of tags because it made the beaches less crowded.

With stores that range from J.Crew and Abercrombie & Fitch to Michael Kors, Nike and Calvin Klein, the outlets have stores for all types of shoppers. Recent travelers said they appreciated the variety of stores and added the steep discounts and deals were worth the visit. However, unlike some outlet malls, which are confined to a pedestrian-only area, the Tanger Outlets shops are spread out across a few busy streets, which some visitors noted as inconvenient. If you're looking for an even greater selection of designers, consider checking out Playground Pier as well.

The outlets welcome shoppers from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays, although hours can vary depending on the season. You can find the shops behind Bally's and  Caesars , a few blocks removed from the boardwalk, between Atlantic and Baltic avenues. Lucy the Margate Elephant Lucy the Margate Elephant

Although she sits about 5 miles southwest of Atlantic City, the drive is worth it; where else are you going to see a giant elephant? The six-story tall, 90-ton elephant has had a long history of preservation efforts and repairs. Built in 1881 in an effort to attract homebuyers to the area, Lucy is now a National Historic Landmark and a great place to take the family. C limb to Lucy's howdah (the platform on her back) for a great view of the Atlantic Ocean, and take a tour of the elephant's interiors, which once even served as a hotel.

Recent visitors give the massive elephant rave reviews. Travelers say Lucy is a fun piece of history, adding that it's particularly interesting to tour and explore the inside of the elephant and learn about the attraction's beginnings. Many also recommend stopping by the gift shop to check out the trinkets there as well.

Steel Pier Steel Pier

If you're traveling to AC during the summer (or on fall weekends), you might want to spend a few hours at the Steel Pier amusement park. Opening nearly a century ago, Steel Pier used to attract thousands of visitors each day; even big-name performers like Frank Sinatra came to entertain. Its popularity slowed to a halt in the late 1970s, but – like many things in the AC – the Steel Pier is making a comeback.

Rides like the Rock-n-Roll, the Ferris wheel and the Drop and the Slingshot provide thrills and offer excellent views of the AC shoreline. But if you want an even higher flying view of the beach, you might take one of the helicopter rides offered here. To enjoy the rides, you will need to purchase tickets, offered by the single or by a book; special attractions, including helicopter rides, cost extra. Single tickets cost $1 and ticket books range in cost from $40 to $60, depending on how many you'd like to buy.

4. Chicken Bone Beach

Chicken Bone Beach

Atlantic City’s Chicken Bone Beach is a bit of New Jersey history that the city is likely not proud of.

A once segregated beach, Chicken Bone Beach was named for the unfounded claim that the shore was littered with the discarded chicken bones left behind by African Americans on this “blacks only beach” in the early to mid-1900s.

A woeful time in American history, the beach became segregated long after the end of the Civil War because of pressure from local businesses.

It wasn’t until 1964, with the passing of the Civil Rights Act, that the beach, like all AC beaches, was opened to all.

Although the beach blends in with surrounding ones, there is a memorial plaque that distinguishes it from others.

If you’re interested in enjoying a lovely stroll along the New Jersey shoreline with a touch of American history, this beach is one of many interesting yet beautiful places to see.

What’s more, it’s one of a few free things to do in the small town.

Ferris wheel at Ocean City, New Jersey

Just 11 miles south of Atlantic City, Ocean City is an extremely popular place to visit for those traveling with kids. Not only does this seaside destination offer some of the best beaches on the Atlantic coast, it has been completely alcohol-free since its establishment by church ministers in 1879.

Like its big cousin to the north, Ocean City also has an excellent boardwalk . Though not quite as long, this one stretches for two-and-a-half miles, and features an eclectic mix of shops and dining options in a picturesque downtown core. Attractions include several amusement parks, as well as theaters.

Family-Friendly Ocean City

A must-visit is the Ocean City Historical Museum . Housed in the Ocean City Community Center, it's here you'll find many interesting displays depicting the city's early history through period furniture, artifacts, and vintage clothing. There are also interesting displays of old photographs and postcards.

Other fun things to do in Ocean City include bicycling on the city's numerous bike paths or playing some golf at the 12-hole municipal course. Popular water-based activities include fishing, boating, and water sports rentals, from kayaks to kiteboarding.

Address: 1735 Simpson Ave, Ocean City, Maryland, New Jersey

Lucy the Margate Elephant

Few seaside attractions are as iconic as Lucy, a 65-foot, six-story-high wood and tin elephant built in the small coastal town of Margate in 1881 to attract prospective buyers to summer homes in the area. Since then, Lucy has been a tavern, a summer home, and an observation deck.

After being rescued from near demise in the 1960s, today Lucy stands proud in Josephine Harron Park and has been listed on the National Park Registry of Historical Landmarks. Highlights of a visit to the oldest surviving novelty architecture in the US includes climbing the spiral staircase up to the "howdah," the small cabin-like structure on her back, with its wonderful panoramic views. Fun guided tours are available.

Traveling with kids? Try to time your visit for July 20, when Lucy's birthday is celebrated with a free party kids are encouraged to attend.

This historic venue is also where you'll find the largest musical instrument in the world, a pipe organ with 33,000 pipes, eight chambers, and 1,000 stop keys. Visitors can enjoy a listen to this recently renovated organ every weekday at noon for a free 30-minute concert.

Kids love the tropical shark and stingray touch tanks, as well as the numerous species of reptiles and amphibians on display. Twice daily, there is an exotic animal show that introduces some of the aquarium's more interesting residents and provides information about their eating habits, habitats, and more.

War Memorials

Perhaps surprisingly for a city with a reputation for fun, Atlantic City is home to two excellent war memorials. The oldest is the World War I Memorial , built in 1922 and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Great War of 1914-1918. It features an impressive rotunda that houses Liberty in Distress , a nine-foot bronze statue.

The other notable monument is the New Jersey Korean War Veterans Memorial . Constructed as a reminder of those who died in the name of democracy while fighting in the Korean peninsula from 1950 to 1953, ensuring a better future for the people of South Korea, it's a lasting tribute to those who died in the conflict.

The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey provides an important and fascinating look at the struggle of African Americans through the centuries. Highlights include interesting displays and more than 11,000 historical and cultural artifacts.

The museum also houses a collection of memorabilia of soldiers from Atlantic County spanning WWI to present day conflicts. Permanent exhibits include a look at how stereotypes in media and marketing have had a lasting negative effect on African Americans.

Also of interest are its collections of furniture and housewares from early African American life, and the story of the African American entertainers who held prominent roles during Atlantic City's glory days.

Gardner's Basin

Historic Gardner's Basin is a maritime village and waterfront park with a variety of interesting features that make it a worthwhile destination for travelers. Highlights include original maritime exhibits such as the Steel Pier Diving Bell, once used to lower guests to the seabed.

Gardner's Basin is also a popular spot from which to embark on a fishing or dolphin-sighting cruise, or just to explore as you visit the unique shops of the Crafters Village . It also offers waterfront dining with fine views over the Atlantic, and is where you'll find the Atlantic City Aquarium .

The Atlantic City Art Center, once the country's only gallery built on a municipal pier, has also moved to the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. Despite having relocated, the gallery is a popular attraction and is noted for its exhibits of art from both national and regional artists.

A respite from the commercialism and excess of the city, the museum features constantly changing exhibits that include photography, sculpture, and paintings among other media.

The Art Center also offers concerts, gallery talks, artist demonstrations, and literary readings throughout the year, so be sure to check ahead to see what's on.

Where to stay in Atlantic City really comes down to personal preference. Some people may prefer to stay near the ocean for easy access to the boardwalk with its Walk of Fame, the Steel Pier, and, of course, the beautiful sandy beach. Alternatively, hotels nearer the main marina offer exceptional amenities and are closer to attractions like the aquarium. Below are some highly rated hotels in good locations:

Luxury Hotels:

  • The Borgata Hotel & Spa is one of the newer hotels in Atlantic City, and is located near the aquarium. This hotel features modern rooms with upgraded bathrooms, including oversized showers.
  • Nearby, The Water Club by Borgata offers an upscale accommodation option with luxurious rooms and one of the finest spas in the city.
  • Caesars Atlantic City , right on the beach, has exceptional rooms with beautiful ocean views, and the boardwalk is right outside the front doors.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • The Resorts Hotel is a good beachfront option in this category. A short stroll from the Steel Pier and all its attractions, this smaller hotel has comfortable rooms and an indoor/outdoor pool.
  • Recently renovated, The Claridge - A Radisson Hotel is an iconic Atlantic City property that has hosted famous celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra.
  • The hotel restaurant has a 1920s theme. Also recently upgraded is the Club Wyndham Skyline Tower . The hotel is set back from the beach but offers large one- and two-bedroom suites, some with balconies.

Budget Hotels :

  • In the center of the action, just a block off the beach, is the BEST WESTERN Atlantic City Hotel . Rooms come with a complimentary breakfast.
  • The Quality Inn Flamingo is a low-rise hotel and has standard rooms, some with mini fridges, and also provides a complimentary breakfast.

A trip to the East Coast is usually intriguing like no other. It’s even more fulfilling if you’re heading there with a list of things to do. We have developed a perfect one-day itinerary in Atlantic City, consisting of the top places to go and the fun activities to try.

One day in Atlantic City Itinerary

The American East Coast has numerous popular travel destinations. Yet, none of them compares to Atlantic City. With an exquisite casino gaming experience, beautiful beaches, and high-end hotels, Atlantic City has everything you need for a fantastic vacation. But, with all those attractions surrounding you, it’s easy to lose track of the most important sights in the city. This itinerary, therefore, will show you everything you should check out while here. Let’s get going!

What’s the best time to visit Atlantic City?

Among its other hidden gems, this city also boasts pleasant summer breezes and cool days, which makes the months of March to May and June to August the best times to visit Atlantic City. Just remember that the crowds are much bigger in summer. Early spring is a much better option if you want to avoid that, provided that you come before Memorial Day .

Atlantic City

A few facts about Atlantic City

Atlantic City is arguably one of the most fun-filled places in the United States. However, before visiting this East Coast City, there are a few things you need to refresh your mind with. If you’re a first-time sightseer, you should always know that:

– Before the Boardwalk and all other attractions came into place, the City’s most popular attraction was a diving horse.

– Atlantic City is home to America’s first-ever Boardwalk

Street of Atlantic City

– Atlantic City brings around more than 30 million visitors annually, making it one of the leading destinations in the United States

– While in the City, you’ll never run short of a place to stay. There are more than 10,000 hotel rooms for tourists all year round.

Atlantic City Hotels

One Day in Atlantic City Itinerary

This iconic travel destination on the East Coast comes with numerous exciting points that will leave you satisfied with your perfect one-day itinerary. You can also find more information about all the places to visit on our website , highlighting everything else you need to know. Here’s our in-depth look into the best places to see in Atlantic City.

Take a walk along the Boardwalk

The Boardwalk is one of the first tourist destinations you’ll notice when you step into Atlantic City. Construction of this Boardwalk dates back to the 1870s and has since become one of the leading tourist spots on the East Coast . The Boardwalk attracts millions of people annually, thanks to its convenience and a range of fun activities to do.

Boardwalk, Atlantic City

The most notable thing about the Boardwalk is that it shows you a great view of the Atlantic Ocean on one side. The four-mile-long Boardwalk also has some of the best Atlantic City hotels, bars, and restaurants lined on the other side. If you want an experience in one of the prominent Atlantic City casinos, the Boardwalk offers you a perfect getaway.  You can play Eye of Horus Tricks on the go to get ready for the real thing, but other activities like biking are also allowed on the Boardwalk, especially if you can’t conquer the four-mile stretch on foot.

Boardwalk, Atlantic City

Go to the Atlantic City Beach

Love boogie boarding and wave jumping? Why not add the Atlantic City beach to your itinerary? Unlike most beaches on the East Coast, the Atlantic City beach is endowed with the waves from the Atlantic Ocean, making it a perfect spot for active beach events. And even better, the beach is accessible to the public, which means you won’t pay a dime for a beach pass.

Atlantic City Beach

Another thing about the Atlantic City beach is its proximity to the Boardwalk. You don’t have to take a long walk to get a taste of the beach environment. Furthermore, you can easily purchase your favorite beach gear from one of the shops along the Boardwalk. If you are an adult, you can opt for a walk along the flat terrain near the water or join the young ones in other fun beach activities. You also have little to worry about as lifeguards, showers, and changing rooms are available here, too.

Beach Bar, Atlantic City

Visit the Atlantic City Steel Pier

It would not be a good idea to visit Atlantic City without going to the Steel Pier. Arguably Atlantic City’s most popular attraction, the steel pier, is the cradle of fun-filled adventures on the East Coast of New Jersey. The pier is connected to the Boardwalk and comprises an amusement park with more than 25 themed rides. You’ll also find unlimited game adventures, food kiosks, and a family-friendly pub overlooking the water.

Steel Pier, Atlantic City

The common rides at the Steel pier amusement park include a double-decker carousel, the Ferris wheel, and the Slingshot. Besides these rides, be sure to experience the best view of the coastline and skyline on a helicopter right from the Steel Pier.ć

Steel Pier, Atlantic City

Go Shopping at the Playground Pier

Since various parts of the world began easing coronavirus restrictions, you can now travel around and recreate all the fun you missed during the lockdown. One such way is going shopping at the Playground Pier, previously known as The Pier Shops. You can find everything here, including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry, and many more high-end products.

The Playground Pier sits on a 900-foot-long dock that extends into the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a perfect place for window shopping, and it’s usually open every day of the week but with varying hours of operation.

Don’t Forget the Entertainment and Nightlife Galore

There are many reasons why Atlantic City is commonly referred to as America’s favorite playground. One of the reasons is its nightlife experience and endless entertainment spots. Numerous concerts, top Atlantic City events, and conventions define what the City is all about throughout the year.

Atlantic City at Night

Comedy Clubs, the intimate arena at Jim Whelan Hall, and nightclubs rule the Atlantic City nightlife experience. Each of these entertainment experiences comes within your budget and in a taste that suits your preference. For instance, Boogie Nights at the Tropicana Resort serves you with the best oldies from the’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

Day trips from Atlantic City

Staying for a few days in Atlantic City? Well, then you will have a chance to make some great day trips. No matter if you want to explore the rest of New Jersey or travel up the East Coast, there are plenty of fine destinations. Here are some of the best suggestions:

New York City

Spending one day in New York City is definitely doable as a day trip from Atlantic City because the two places are only about two hours’ drive apart. So, if you get a slightly earlier start, you could be having breakfast in the Big Apple before you go on to explore everything that one of the greatest cities in the world has to offer. The Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, all the great restaurants… the list just goes on and on.

Jersey City

You can also spend a day in Jersey City , which is just slightly closer to Atlantic City than New York. This is a great place to relax because people here like to take things slowly and there is a sense of real community permeating the air. Plenty of things to discover, so you certainly won’t be bored while here.

On the other hand, if you’d like to explore the state of New Jersey a bit more, head to Cape May, an exceptionally charming town full of amazing Victorian mansions. It also has an excellent zoo, which is completely free of charge, so if you just want to take it easy a bit, this is one of the best day trips from Atlantic City you can make.

If your idea of relaxing is a shopping spree, head to Smithville, a village full of quaint little shops that sell all kinds of different souvenirs. For shopaholics, this is probably a perfect way to spend a day.

  • 13 Most Beautiful Small Towns On The Atlantic Coast You Should Visit

Along the Atlantic Coast, small towns have an undeniable allure, enticing travelers with their old-world charm and rich history. From the quaint charm of Kennebunkport, Maine , to memories of a bygone era in Cape May, New Jersey , the laid-back beach culture of Folly Beach, South Carolina , to the lobster shacks in Rye, New Hampshire , each town offers its own unique blend of attractions. Visitors can explore scenic lighthouses, wander along picturesque beaches, and fully experience the area's rich maritime history. Whether savoring fresh seafood, browsing charming boutiques, or simply relaxing by the sea, these beautiful towns provide the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable coastal getaway.

Kennebunkport, Maine

Kennebunkport is the quintessential New England coastal town. It is also a top-rated tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the United States and Canada to its beautiful beaches, seafood restaurants, and scenic lighthouses. Goose Rocks Beach is the most well-known yet secluded beach, a few miles from downtown Kennebunkport in a residential area near Cape Porpoise, where visitors can see the iconic Cape Porpoise Harbor Light. Its most famous resident is the 43rd president of the United States, George W. Bush , who owns a summer home on Walker’s Point (known by locals as “The Bush Compound”).

To discover the town's rich history, take a tour of landmarks such as the 1853-built White Columns, a Greek revival mansion-turned-museum to learn about the sea-faring ship-building history of the town, or visit the Seashore Trolley Museum, the world’s first and largest Electric Railway Museum, and home to a fascinating collection of vintage streetcars. There are many unique shops in Kennebunkport’s Dock Square, where visitors can find ocean-inspired artwork and handcrafted gifts, books, jewelry, and clothing. After shopping, grab a coffee or a quick lobster roll lunch at places like Mabel’s Lobster Claw or The Clam Shack.

Cape May, New Jersey

With streets of colorful Victorian-era buildings, it’s no wonder the pretty little town of Cape May has been listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1976. Quieter than its Wildwood and Ocean City neighbors, strolling along the Beach Avenue seawall is one of the best ways to see the sights—landmark buildings like The Sea Mist, The Baronet, and Congress Hall, to name a few. Cape May’s beaches run 2.5 miles parallel to Beach Avenue and are named after the intersecting streets, like the popular body surfing spot at Beach & Madison Avenue. They are spotless, family-friendly, and close to restaurants and surf shops. It’s common to see bottle-nosed dolphins playing close to the surf most days.

The Washington Street Mall is a three-block pedestrian walk in the town center. It includes classic beach shops like The Original Fudge Kitchen and Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy as well as souvenir and t-shirt shops. Grab a coffee at Coffee Tyme, lunch at The Ugly Mug, or take a long leisurely walk to The Lobster House to enjoy drinks and appetizers on the Schooner American, a 130-foot authentic Grand Banks sailing vessel that serves as their outdoor cocktail lodge.

Folly Beach, South Carolina

A young surfer riding a wave at sunrise on Folly Beach, South Carolina.

Just eleven miles south of Charleston , the laid-back town of Folly Beach (known as “The Edge of America”) is one of the top surfing destinations on the East Coast. The favorite spot for advanced surfers is known locally as “The Washout,” but other popular beaches include 10th Street East, the Old Coast Guard Base, and Folly’s Pier. Visitors can also surf at Folly Beach County Park, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Folly River, near Skimmer Flats—an important brown pelican rookery. Visitors tempted to hang ten in Folly Beach can check out McKevlin’s Surf Shop, which has been renting surfboards and bodyboards since 1965.

With some of the best saltwater fishing in the area, visitors can cast a line from the Folly Beach Pier (rebuilt in 2022), which stretches over 1,049 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. At the northern end of Folly Beach, the iconic Morris Island Lighthouse sits on a secluded barrier island off Charleston's coast and is accessible solely by boat. At 161 ft, it is the tallest lighthouse in South Carolina but is not open for viewing as it undergoes restoration.

Tybee Island, Georgia

Aerial view of the town and beach at Tybee Island, Georgia.

Tybee Island is a barrier island along the Atlantic coast with a rich and fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years. It is renowned for its sandy beaches, including South Beach, the pier, and the pavilion, but remnants of the island’s storied past remain. Dating back to 1736, the still-functioning Tybee Island Light Station is Georgia ’s tallest lighthouse and its original beacon still shines brilliantly. Visitors can climb the light’s 178 steps to view the entire island and the Atlantic Ocean and visit the on-site museum.

Established in 1898, Fort Screven played a significant role in protecting Savannah 's vital port during the Spanish-American War and both world wars.

Today, Fort Screven is a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and many of its original structures, including barracks, officers' quarters, and coastal defense batteries, have been reimagined as a tourist destination. Fort Screven’s Battery Garland is now the Tybee Island Museum and the Tybee Post Theater, which once screened “talkies,” shows recently released and classic movies. The Lighthouse Inn Bed & Breakfast, constructed over 100 years ago, was once the military bandmaster’s home.

Key West, Florida

Road to the ocean in Florida Keys.

Key West is a vibrant island town at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys . A brightly colored, oversized buoy marks the spot where only 90 miles separate the United States from Cuba , and is a well-photographed icon in the town of about 25,000 residents. There is much to see and do in Key West, like learning about the town’s maritime heritage at the Key West Lighthouse and Museum, which dates back to the 19th century, or visiting any number of other museums, including the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum, the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House, or the 1890-era Harry S. Truman Little White House where the former president spent 175 days of his presidency.

Visitors can explore many of Key West’s most popular destinations on their own or by booking an Old Town Trolley Tour. Lovers of literature won’t want to miss a tour of the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, see the stunning in-ground swimming pool, which was an expensive luxury during the 1930s, and meet the nearly 60 polydactyl (six-toed) cats who live there, and are descendants of Hemingway’s cat, Snow White.

Cape Charles, Virginia

Beach homes in Cape Charles, Virginia.

Cape Charles is a charming waterfront town in Virginia —a historically significant state as one of the original 13 colonies and home to North America's first permanent English settlement. The town is known for its historic architecture, with a large concentration of turn-of-century buildings that visitors can see on a walk through its historic district. To learn more about Cape Charles’ railroad roots, visit the Cape Charles Museum to see its collection of railway cars, the Rosenwald School, the Tomb of Custis—one of the earliest settling families in Virginia—and Eyre Hall Gardens, home of the some of the oldest gardens in the country, dating back to 1800.

Over the years, the town has morphed into a laid-back beach community where visitors can swim in the calm waters or rent stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and bicycles from SouthEast Expeditions. After a day at the beach, stop at the Cape Charles Brewing Co. for a tasting flight and some fish tacos or at Brown Dog Ice Cream for a scoop of Spotted Roxie. Explore the nearby Kiptopeke State Park, where visitors can paddle around nine partially sunken concrete ships known as the Ghost Fleet.

Ogunquit, Maine

Colorful view of fall foliage and boats docked in Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Maine.

Ogunquit is a picturesque seaside village with scenic walks and a beautiful white-sand beach. Its name comes from the Algonquin Indians and means “Beautiful Place by the Sea.” It is indeed a lovely town on the Southern Coast of Maine. Its three-mile stretch of beach is one of the longest in the state and perfect for collecting seashells, kite flying, and building castles in the sand. While the Atlantic Ocean 's temperature is not particularly warm even in mid-summer, it’s refreshing after a morning spent walking the 1.25-mile-long Marginal Way from the beach, past rocky cliffs, summer homes, and charming inns to Perkins Cove.

Perkins Cove is a fishing village renowned for fresh Maine lobster, oysters, clams, and crabs. It is also home to a hand-operated footbridge drawn when a tall ship moves into the cove. From the dock, you can watch the lobster boats moving in and out of the cove while enjoying the view from the patio at Barnacle Billy’s, where boiled lobster and drawn butter have been on the menu since 1961. If you go for lunch, enjoy Maine lobster rolls, clam chowder, or steamed clams, and be sure to order their signature Rum Punch.

New Shoreham, Rhode Island

New Shoreham, also known as Bock Island, is the smallest town in the smallest state in America. Despite its size, it is rich in history, natural beauty, and charming attractions. One of the most iconic landmarks on Bock Island is the South East Lighthouse. Perched atop Mohegan Bluffs—the breathtaking cliffs that rise nearly 200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean—visitors can tour the lighthouse, learn about its significance, and descend the stairs to the beach below. Popular beaches on the island include Crescent Beach, Ballard’s Beach, and Mansion Beach—all idyllic settings for swimming, picnicking, and beach combing.

New Shoreham is quieter than its neighbors like Newport or Narragansett, but it still has all the charm of Rhode Island . Explore the historic Old Harbor area, where visitors will find a bustling marina, charming shops, art galleries, and waterfront restaurants like Dead Eye Dick’s, Persephone’s Kitchen, and the Poor People’s Pub. The town is also known for its preserved Victorian architecture, with many historic homes and buildings dating back to the 19th century.

Hatteras, North Carolina

The Outer Banks (OBX) has long attracted visitors for romantic getaways and family vacations, but Hatteras Island might be one of the most charming places on the East Coast. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore occupies 70 miles along the Outer Banks, where visitors can swim, beach comb, and view wildlife in the coastal wilderness. Visitors to the island can explore the iconic black and white striped Cape Hatteras Lighthouse—the tallest lighthouse in the United States at 208 feet, or spend time at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, named in honor of the thousands of shipwrecks that rest in the waters off North Carolina ’s coast.

Less touristy than its neighbor, Nag’s Head, Hatteras is an appealing destination for outdoor enthusiasts, especially sportfishing charters, with the island once earning the title of the “Blue Marlin Capital of the World. In Hatteras Landing, visitors can peruse the shops, like Farmer’s Daughter, Teach’s Lair Marina, or Kitty Hawk Kites, and grab a bite to eat and sip on a Hatteras Halekulani on the deck of The Wreck Tiki Bar & Food.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor historic town center aerial view at sunset.

Bar Harbor is on Mount Desert Island and sits right outside the stunning Acadia National Park entrance. It is a historic tourist town with soft sandy beaches, granite cliffs, and salt in the air. In the 19th century, it was the quintessential resort for the affluent who owned vacation homes in the town or vacationed there in the majestic hotels of bygone eras. Today, it attracts outdoor enthusiasts drawn to the city for the many outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking, cycling, whale watching, and more.

Spend a day browsing the boutiques along Main Street and Mount Desert Street in downtown Bar Harbor, with its laid-back flip-flop culture, or satisfy your sweet tooth at Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium and choose from over 64 flavors of ice cream, including lobster. A stop at Maine’s oldest bookstore, Sherman’s, is a must for book lovers. There are a variety of inns and hotels in Bar Habor, including the luxurious Bar Harbor Inn & Spa or the elegant Bar Harbor Grand Hotel, which is a replica of one of Bar Harbor’s late 19th-century hotels—the Rodick House.

Madison, Connecticut

Blue hour after sunset at Madison, Connecticut.

Madison is known for idyllic lighthouses on rocky outlets, and the long stretch of white sand at Madison’s Hammonasset Beach State Park is a throwback to the beaches of yesterday. At over two miles long, the park is popular for its calm waters and various water sports and has attracted visitors to its sandy beach, salt marshes, and hiking trails since its official opening in 1920. Walk down to Meigs Point to hear the "singing beach," when the tides wash over the thousands of shells, making a lovely tinkling sound, and visit the Meigs Point Nature Center while there.

Several notable landmarks are in Madison, including the Deacon John Grave House, built in 1685—one of the oldest surviving homes in the state. Its historic saltbox architecture is now a museum that offers visitors a glimpse into colonial life. The Madison Green Historic District is the town’s picturesque center, surrounded by thirty-three historic homes, churches, and the 1901-era Scranton Memorial Library. Visitors can take a self-guided tour, exploring the district on foot and outdoors, using a mobile device.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

At the tip of Cape Cod , Provincetown (also called “P-town”) is one of Massachusett 's most historic destinations. It is the site of the Mayflower's landing in the New World in 1620, and the landmark event is marked by the Pilgrim Monument, founded in 1892. Over the years, millions of visitors and locals have climbed the 252-foot granite Pilgrim Monument and visited the nearby Provincetown Museum, highlighting the Mayflower Pilgrims' arrival.

There are two popular beaches in P-town, which are part of the Cape Cod National Seashore: Herring Cove Beach and Race Point Beach. Both are breathtaking stretches of sand popular with anglers who like to surf fish there.

Downtown Commercial Street is the place to shop for art, with over 40 galleries. The Provincetown Art Association & Museum showcases the works of hundreds of artists who the town’s stunning scenery has inspired. To taste the town’s cultural heritage, visit the Provincetown Portuguese Bakery for sweet and savory bites or grab a craft coffee at the Kohi Coffee Company.

Rye, New Hampshire

Between The Hamptons and Portsmouth , Rye is a much more laid-back, charming coastal town that feels miles away with its rugged rocky shore, peaceful beaches like Jenness Beach State Beach and Wallis Sands State Beach, and scenic walking trails in Odiorne Point State Park, which offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the Seacoast Science Center in the park to get up close and personal with sea stars and urchins or learn about the ecology of humpback whales and the science of seabirds.

For history buffs, the town of Rye includes over a dozen historical markers, including the site of the first Atlantic cable, laid in 1874, the Sunken Forest, the Breakfast Hill Battle Site, and Pulpit Rock Tower—a Battery Fire Control Tower built to protect Portsmouth Harbor and the Naval Shipyard during World War II. Another important landmark in Rye is the Rye Congregational Church, established in 1726. After working up an appetite touring historic sites, visit Petey’s Summertime Seafood or its close neighbor Ray’s Seafood Restaurant to compare lobster rolls.

Thirteen small, beautiful towns invite visitors with their seaside charm and rich history. From the sandy shores of Cape May to the colorful streets of Key West, each town offers a unique experience. Whether it's exploring historic landmarks, indulging in fresh seafood, or simply enjoying the ocean breeze, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Where are ticks found? Maps show where the disease-carrying parasites live

place to visit atlantic city

Tick season is ramping up, and experts say people should take precautions before venturing outside.

Of the 700 species of ticks in the world, the U.S. is home to nearly 50 species , according to the National Institutes of Health. Though a select few can transmit disease to people, those species are growing in numbers and reach.

The number of people diagnosed in 2022 with tick-borne diseases in the U.S. rose to 62,551, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . In the previous decade, infections averaged about 33,000 a year, but the reporting was more cumbersome.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects annual cases to continue growing, though. With climate change raising temperatures, tick populations have expanded into new regions and put more people in contact with ticks and their illness-causing bacteria.

Only two tick species can spread Lyme disease

The blacklegged tick and Western blacklegged tick can spread Lyme disease, which can lead to a wide range of health problems. Most Lyme disease cases have been reported in the upper Midwest, Northeast and mid-Atlantic states.

The CDC says Lyme disease is the most prevalent disease transmitted through tick bites in the U.S. But even in high-risk regions, the chance of contracting Lyme disease from a tick bite is 1% to 3%, according to UpToDate.com .

Unable to view our graphics? Click here to see them.

In 2022, the CDC revised its guidelines for Lyme disease reporting, which streamlined the process in states with high infection rates. Those states are:

Other ticks species that carry diseases

Lyme disease isn't the only tick-borne disease in the U.S.

Hundreds of people each year are infected with a variety of illnesses, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever from its namesake Rocky Mountain wood tick, Rickettsia parkeri from the Gulf Coast tick, and Alpha-gal syndrome from the Lone Star tick.

The American dog tick and the brown dog tick are also responsible for spreading the Rocky Mountain spotted fever. There are 250 to 1,200 cases reported in the U.S. annually.

How to prevent tick bites

If you expect to be in an area where ticks live, such a park, backyard or campsite, be extra careful when venturing outside. Ticks can be a year-round annoyance, but they are most active in the warmer months of April through September.

Before going outside

Where should you check for ticks?

Start checking lower body parts first: your toes, ankles and legs. Then work your way up to your hair. That's how ticks move, from the ground up.

It's a good idea to also check your clothes for ticks. Ticks can be as small as a poppy seed. For Lyme disease to be transmitted, a tick is usually connected to its host for  24 to 36 hours , according to the CDC. However, other tick-borne diseases can be transmitted much more quickly, sometimes in as little as 15 minutes . By removing the tick promptly, you can reduce the chance of becoming infected.

Blue Angels Annapolis Schedule: When, Where To Watch 2024 Air Show

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Blue Angels return to Annapolis later this month to fly in the U.S. Naval Academy Air Show .

Marylanders will have three chances to see the elite squadron of Navy fighter jets during the Naval Academy's Commissioning Week.

The Blue Angels run to both extremes. The Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets fly as fast as 700 mph and as slow as 120 mph during the demonstration. They can reach altitudes as high as 15,000 feet or as low as 50 feet. The jets sometimes are only 18 inches apart.

The Blue Angels arrive Tuesday, May 21. They will circle the city from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Their flight rehearsal, which is similar to their full demonstration, is at 2 p.m. over the Severn River.

The full flight demonstration is Wednesday, May 22 at 2 p.m. over the Severn River.

Commissioning Ceremony Flyover

The Blue Angels will also fly over the Midshipmen's commissioning , or graduation, ceremony on Friday, May 24. Residents can catch a glimpse of the flyover at 10:04 a.m., but the commissioning ceremony at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is closed to the public.

Commissioning Week runs from Friday, May 17 through Saturday, May 25.

More information on Commissioning Week is posted at usna.edu/commissioningweek . To learn more about the Blue Angels, visit blueangels.navy.mil .

Where To Watch

A popular place to watch is Hospital Point on the Naval Academy campus, known as the yard.

Many visitors also watch from Ego Alley or the Spa Creek Bridge sidewalks in downtown Annapolis.

The Severn River and Spa Creek have clear vantage points for boaters, but the maritime restrictions posted below will be in effect.

The Anne Arundel County Public Library is hosting a free Wednesday, May 22 watch party at the Westfield Annapolis mall atop the green parking garage.

Capital SUP has paddleboard and kayak tours during the practice and full demonstration days.

The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park has a boat cruise with lunch and drinks for the full demonstration day.

Charter boats are available through Island Chill Yacht Charters and Ben and Fritz Charters among other places.

Where To Park, Anchor

The City of Annapolis posted the parking and boating information below:

PARKING: The best option for getting onto the yard is to park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and take the free shuttle to enter through the Visitor Center at Gate One. For those coming downtown for Blue Angels rehearsal and/or flight demonstration, City garages are the best bet and include Hillman (150 Gorman Street), Gott’s (45 Calvert Street), Knighton (1A Colonial Ave.), and Park Place (One Park Place).

HEAVY TRAFFIC: Make a plan to accommodate the increase in cars and pedestrian traffic as much as possible. Allow yourself plenty of extra time and please be courteous to out-of-town drivers who are unfamiliar with City streets. Download the “Prepare Me Annapolis” mobile app (Apple/Android) to receive local traffic alerts.

On Friday, May 24, security around Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Rowe Blvd. could make traffic slower than usual until approximately 3 p.m.

TEMPORARY ROAD AND BRIDGE CLOSURES: On Tuesday, May 21, the Route 450 (Naval Academy) bridge will be closed between 10:45 a.m. and approximately 3:45 p.m. for the Blue Angels rehearsal. The bridge will close again on Wednesday, May 22 at approximately 1:45 p.m. until approximately 4 p.m. for the Blue Angels flight demonstration.

DOWNTOWN PARKING LIMITATIONS: Expect parking to be limited throughout the week. Visit www.AnnapolisParking.com to reserve garage parking at Gott’s and Knighton garages. Please note that there will be strict enforcement of metered parking, two-hour limited spaces, Residential Permit Zones and red zones. Visitors are strongly encouraged to park at Knighton (Corner of Colonial Avenue and West Street) and Park Place (Just off of West Street and Spa Road) garages and take the free downtown “magenta” shuttle. The shuttle can be tracked using the transloc app or on the web: https://accessannapolis.transloc.com/routes .

Solar Storm Intensifies, Filling Skies With Northern Lights

Officials warned of potential blackouts or interference with navigation and communication systems this weekend, as well as auroras as far south as Southern California or Texas.

By Katrina Miller and Judson Jones

Katrina Miller reports on space and astronomy and Judson Jones is a meteorologist.

A dramatic blast from the sun set off the highest-level geomagnetic storm in Earth’s atmosphere on Friday that is expected to make the northern lights visible as far south as Florida and Southern California and could interfere with power grids, communications and navigations system.

It is the strongest such storm to reach Earth since Halloween of 2003. That one was strong enough to create power outages in Sweden and damage transformers in South Africa.

The effects could continue through the weekend as a steady stream of emissions from the sun continues to bombard the planet’s magnetic field.

The solar activity is so powerful that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which monitors space weather, issued an unusual storm watch for the first time in 19 years, which was then upgraded to a warning. The agency began observing outbursts on the sun’s surface on Wednesday, with at least five heading in the direction of Earth.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday morning.

For people in many places, the most visible part of the storm will be the northern lights, known also as auroras. But authorities and companies will also be on the lookout for the event’s effects on infrastructure, like global positioning systems, radio communications and even electrical power.

While the northern lights are most often seen in higher latitudes closer to the North Pole, people in many more parts of the world are already getting a show this weekend that could last through the early part of next week.

Windmills against skies glowing pink, purple and green.

As Friday turned to Saturday in Europe, people across the continent described skies hued in a mottling of colors.

Alfredo Carpineti , an astrophysicist, journalist and author in North London, saw them with his husband from the rooftop of their apartment building.

“It is incredible to be able to see the aurora directly from one’s own backyard,” he said. “I was hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of green on the horizon, but it was all across the sky in both green and purple.”

Here’s what you need to know about this weekend’s solar event.

How will the storm affect people on Earth?

A geomagnetic storm watch or warning indicates that space weather may affect critical infrastructure on or orbiting near Earth. It may introduce additional current into systems, which could damage pipelines, railroad tracks and power lines.

According to Joe Llama, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, communications that rely on high frequency radio waves, such as ham radio and commercial aviation , are most likely to suffer. That means it is unlikely that your cellphone or car radio, which depend on much higher frequency radio waves, will conk out.

Still, it is possible for blackouts to occur. As with any power outage, you can prepare by keeping your devices charged and having access to backup batteries, generators and radio.

The most notable solar storm recorded in history occurred in 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it lasted for nearly a week, creating aurora that stretched down to Hawaii and Central America and impacting hundreds of thousands of miles of telegraph lines.

But that was technology of the 19th century, used before scientists fully understood how solar activity disrupted Earth’s atmosphere and communication systems.

“That was an extreme level event,” said Shawn Dahl, a forecaster at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. “We are not anticipating that.”

Unlike tornado watches and warnings, the target audience for NOAA’s announcements is not the public.

“For most people here on planet Earth, they won’t have to do anything,” said Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

The goal of the announcements is to give agencies and companies that operate this infrastructure time to put protection measures in place to mitigate any effects.

“If everything is working like it should, the grid will be stable and they’ll be able to go about their daily lives,” Mr. Steenburgh said.

Will I be able to see the northern lights?

It is possible that the northern lights may grace the skies this week over places that don’t usually see them. The best visibility is outside the bright lights of cities.

Clouds or stormy weather could pose a problem in some places. But if the skies are clear, even well south of where the aurora is forecast to take place, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone. The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Another opportunity could be viewing sunspots during the daytime, if your skies are clear. As always, do not look directly at the sun without protection. But if you still have your eclipse glasses lying around from the April 8 event, you may try to use them to try to spot the cluster of sunspots causing the activity.

How strong is the current geomagnetic storm?

Giant explosions on the surface of the sun, known as coronal mass ejections, send streams of energetic particles into space. But the sun is large, and such outbursts may not cross our planet as it travels around the star. But when these particles create a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field, it is known as a geomagnetic storm.

NOAA classifies these storms on a “G” scale of 1 to 5, with G1 being minor and G5 being extreme. The most extreme storms can cause widespread blackouts and damage to infrastructure on Earth. Satellites may also have trouble orienting themselves or sending or receiving information during these events.

The current storm is classified as G5, or “extreme.” It is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface — that is about 16 times the diameter of Earth. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Why is this happening now?

The sun’s activity ebbs and flows on an 11-year cycle, and right now, it is approaching a solar maximum. Three other severe geomagnetic storms have been observed so far in the current activity cycle, which began in December 2019, but none were predicted to cause effects strong enough on Earth to warrant a watch or warning announcement.

The cluster of sunspots generating the current storm is the largest seen in this solar cycle, NOAA officials said. They added that the activity in this cycle has outperformed initial predictions .

More flares and expulsions from this cluster are expected, but because of the sun’s rotation the cluster will be oriented in a position less likely to affect Earth. In the coming weeks, the sunspots may appear again on the left side of the sun, but it is difficult for scientists to predict whether this will cause another bout of activity.

“Usually, these don’t come around packing as much of a punch as they did originally,” Mr. Dahl said. “But time will tell on that.”

Jonathan O’Callaghan contributed reporting from London.

An earlier version of this article misstated the radio frequencies used by cellphones and car radios. They are higher frequencies, not low.
