Yesterday's Gone The Fleetwood Mac Legacy
How Fanny Lumdsen Is Approaching The Potency of The Fleetwood Mac Legacy Show
by Paul Cashmere on May 17, 2024
Australian country star Fanny Lumsden wasnât even born when Fleetwood Macâs masterpiece âRumoursâ was released by in August she will go on tour with the challenge of channelling the potency of the Fleetwood Mac lyrics.
Fanny will star alongside Kav Temperely of Eskimo Joe, Charlie Collins and Karen Lee-Andrews for âYesterdayâs Gone â The Fleetwood Mac Legacyâ .
Fanny tells Noise11.com, âIâve never seen them live. I obviously know the songs. They are such iconic songwriters and the band and their stories. The overall story I know, how the couple came together and then it all blew up and they came out with the âRumoursâ album. I know the basicsâ.
Watch the Noise11 Fanny Lumsden interview:
Fanny discovered the music of Fleetwood Mac through The Chicks and her husband Dan, who is also in her band, came into Mac via The Smashing Pumpkins. âFor me I discovered âLandsideâ through The Chicks, formerly The Dixie Chicks. They covered it and I loved them growing up. My husband, who is into heavier music, discovered the song through The Smashing Pumpkins. I think that speaks so much about their songwriting that it can bring these totally different genres and introduce you both into one band. It says a lot about that band and says a lot about their songs. I think thatâs pretty coolâ.
Fanny will perform the 2024 âYesterdayâs Goneâ shows in place of Lisa Mitchell you who in the 2023 line-up. âI get to come in and benefit from the decisions that have already been made so I do get to do âLandslideâ as well,â she says.
What was so incredible about Fleetwood Mac âRumoursâ was that the two relationships in the band, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham and John and Christine McVie, where both splitting as couple and the lyrics reflect the anger. Fanny says, âIts kind of powerful. Thinking about where that energy came from and when they were sitting down and when those songs were formed. Sometimes they were in the room staring at each other with all of those feelings inside and then coming out with a song like that. There is so much power in it and I am excited to bring that to lifeâ.
Fanny can only hope Art never imitates Life for her. âMy husband is in my band, and my brother is too. I just canât imagine breaking up and doing what they did. Iâm not sure I could do itâ.

Fanny Lumsden Announces New Album ‘Hey Dawn’ and Australian Tour
By Alex Gallagher
Australian folk/country artist Fanny Lumsden has announced her fourth album, Hey Dawn . The follow-up to 2020âs ARIA-winning Fallow will arrive Friday, 4th August, and be launched with an extensive national tour that kicks off in late July.
To coincide with the announcement, Lumsden has shared the albumâs title track, alongside a video directed by Lumsden herself and her husband and bandmate Dan Stanley Freeman. Itâs the second single to be released from Hey Dawn , following last monthâs âMillionareâ. The âHey Dawnâ clip was filmed at Gunbar on New South Walesâ Hay plains, on Wiradjuri and Ngarigo land. Watch that below. Album pre-orders are available here .
âI wanted it to feel good, I wanted to have fun,â Lumsden said of her fourth album in a statement. âI didnât want to think too hard about it â I just wanted to feel.â The album was recorded with Lumsdenâs longtime producer Matt Fell, who helmed all three of her previous studio albums.
In a statement, Lumsden described how a chance encounter in a local hall where a man was playing piano sparked a creative drive during the albumâs sessions. âThe only pre-idea I had for the record was I knew I wanted the sound of a piano that felt like you were in a hall when you were a kid, and I walked into this hall and this old man was playing this vision of what I had in my head,â Lumsden said. The same night, she wrote the albumâs title track.
âI was a bit stuck after Fallow and didnât know where to go, and that unlocked it: âOh, you just need to wake up, itâs a new day, itâs a new moment, every day is a new moment, and you just need to be where you are right now. Forget about Fallow , forget about all the other things, just be now,â she said. âYou have to tell the stories of the moment youâre in, and you have to put them out and trust that that is okay. Itâs a new day, weâre here.â
Lumsden â who is currently playing a string of regional dates as part of her Country Halls tour before she heads over to the UK to play Glastonbury Festival in June â will launch Hey Dawn with an extensive national tour, joined by her backing band, the Prawn Stars.
The Hey Dawn tour will kick off Friday, 28th July at Bendigo Bank Theatre, before dates in Ballarat, Anglesea, Canberra, Wagga, Benalla, Brunswick Heads, Pomona, Maryborough, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Melbourne, Meeniyan, Bundalaguah, Milton, Sydney and Newcastle. See dates below.
