Our Istanbul tour begins in the Old City (Constantinople). This is where the most photographed buildings and sites are located. Later in the day, we will see some very worthwhile places in Beyoglu, an Istanbul section across the Golden Horn.

We’ve tried to provide you with links to Istanbul pictures that show the city at its best. Our virtual tour begins with a taste of everyday life on a grand scale: Istanbul’s world-renowned Grand Bazaar, a place that will genuinely consume you as you consume what is sold there.

1. The Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar is a massive, labyrinthine structure filled with booths offering goods from everywhere—and Turkey especially. The stalls where we linger the longest tend to be those that sell cashmere scarfs, jewelry, and many other things.

Most sellers don’t mind if you snap a few photos of their intricately arranged booths. Some might strike up a conversation, and if you’ve never haggled before, you’re sure to catch on quickly.

Take home some unique and beautiful souvenirs to accompany your photos of the Bazaar and remind you of your experience chatting with the vendors.

2. Spice Market

Not far from the Grand Bazaar, you’ll see the Istanbul Spice Market, where there is much more than just spices (though there are many of them). If your camera has a macro or zoom lens, get ready to capture some fascinating details!

3. The Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque (also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque) is a great photo spot that no tourist wants to overlook. The view is stunning from any angle, including inside, where you might see Muslims praying.

Try to get some early evening shots of this building, when its light-colored minarets are set against the darkening sky and other parts of the city still visible as a scenic backdrop.

4. Hagia Sophia

One block away from the Blue Mosque is the equally memorable Hagia Sophia. This stunningly beautiful edifice embodies Turkey’s religious past. It was built in 537 CE as the Eastern Orthodox cathedral for the capital, then called Constantinople.

The Hagia Sophia subsequently served Roman Catholics, later Muslims, and was a secular museum during most of the 20th century. Today, it is a mosque again—and the city’s top tourist destination.

Capture these buildings’ magnificent exteriors from various angles. Also, come back later for some early evening shots when their light-colored minarets and domes offset the darkening sky, and other parts of the city still provide a backdrop.

5. Pierre Loti

Our next stop is Pierre Loti Tepesi, where we’ll enjoy lunch at outdoor tables in a charming café on a famous hilltop. This location overlooks the perfect views of the Golden Horn and much of the city.

6. Topkapi Palace Museum

Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, these buildings were the principal residence and administrative headquarters for the Ottoman sultans. The lavish interiors and treasures they house can keep visitors enthralled for hours.

Step outside, though, and take in the expansive views of courtyards and the water below. Meander around the capacious structures and pathways connecting them to capture the extraordinary architecture.

There is much to see here, both inside and out, and you’ll have your camera out and poised to shoot the entire time!

7. Galata Bridge

This bridge, where pedestrians and cyclists share a broad walkway separated from motor traffic, connects the Old City with Beyoglu, the part of Istanbul across the Golden Horn from the Old City.

If you want a snack, the bridge has many restaurants on its lower deck. However, the upper deck is the ideal spot to capture ground-level images of the city in all directions—both in broad daylight and lit up for the night.

8. The New Arter Museum

Arter is Istanbul’s new home for its permanent collection of contemporary art. Just looking at this astonishing architectural masterpiece will make any photographer fall to their knees.

This Beyoglu building, designed by London-based firm Grimshaw Architects , is covered with rectangular planes of glass-fiber. One expert observer said that it “changes constantly depending on the viewer’s position, creating a multi-layered, integrated, and interdisciplinary public space.”

9. Cicek Pasaji (Flower Passage)

The scenic Cicek Pasaji neighborhood is in Beyoglu. The area features a high-end indoor and outdoor marketplace filled with cafés, restaurants, taverns, shops, food markets, and (not surprisingly) flower vendors.

This area is very close to the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (Istanbul Modern Sanat Muzesi). There is no shortage of excellent photo ops in either of these very hip places.

10. Galata Mevlevi Lodge

Above all, this museum hosts performances by the well-known Whirling Dervishes, performers who see their spinning dance as a form of meditation. While in the museum, take in the Mevlevi artifacts housed there.

The Mevlevi Order (Mawlawiyya) is a Sufi order started in Konya by the followers of Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet, Sufi mystic, and Islamic theologian.

For the early evening, we make our way back to the Old City and the colorful, trendy, and multiethnic neighborhood of Balat. Who hasn’t seen pictures of Balat’s brightly colored row houses? Now, it’s time to snap some of your own to show everyone!

12. Ortakoy Mosque

Also known as Mecidiye Mosque, this is one of the most distinctive scenes of Istanbul. As a baroque-style mosque, it has a beautiful design with exquisite decorations. Nonetheless, what makes the mosque excellent for photography is that it sits on the shores of the Bosphorus strait, with the majestic Bosphorus bridge standing out in the background.

13. Red Tram at Istiklal Street

The Red Tram on line T2 at Istiklal Street is one of the iconic symbols of tourism in Istanbul. This antique red tram is reminiscent of similar trams that run the city in the middle years of the 20th century. Today it is the main attraction in Istiklal, with tourists coming from all over the world to take a nostalgic tram ride. They also relish the opportunity to take photos next to this iconic attraction.

14. Bayuk Valide Han

The Bayuk Valide Han is a 17th-century inn hidden in the backstreets of the Spice Bazaar. Inside, artisans make and repair Turkish handicrafts, but what makes it such a great photo spot is the view gotten from the roof. Nonetheless, you will have to tip the caretaker to use the hidden caretaker to the ceiling; but the scenery and photos will be worth it.

15. Galata Tower

This is a medieval stone tower sitting in the Jewish neighborhood of Galata in Istanbul and is of great historical significance to the city. The building has a height of 63m, and from the top, it gives its visitors a panoramic view of the city which also makes for an excellent photo location.

16. Basilica Cistern

This massive underground cistern with an imposing column is one of the most popular sites in Istanbul. Lighting is achieved using red lights at each column’s base, which reflect on the water below, giving the cistern a breathtaking red hue. Therefore, photos taken in the cistern are always amazing.

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel:

• More than 8 months before the tour takes place, you receive a full refund (the cancelation fee still applies; read below)
• 5-8 months before the tour, your deposit becomes non-refundable but you receive the balance due amount back if the full payment has already been made.
• Less than 5 months before the tour, your deposit is non-refundable and you receive 50% of the balance due amount back.
• Less than 3 months before the tour, your full payment is non-refundable.

An additional cancellation fee of 150 EUR applies to cover the payment fees and our service fee.

Istanbul Photo Tour Itinerary

Day 1: arrival and sultanahmet area.

We’ll pick you up from the airport around noon and head straight to your hotel in Sultanahmet for check-in. Once settled, we’ll grab lunch at a rooftop restaurant, giving you a first-hand view of the iconic Blue Mosque or Hagia Sophia.

The afternoon is set for exploring. We’ll stroll through Sultanahmet Square, stopping by the German Fountain. Keep an eye out for local corn and ‘simit’ sellers – great for candid street shots. We’ll then visit the interiors of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, showcasing their architectural details.

Come evening, you’ll enjoy dinner at another rooftop location, providing a picturesque elevated view of the mosques during sunset and the blue hour.

Day 2: Galata Bridge, Golden Horn and Balat

Kick off your day with a sunrise shoot at the Galata Bridge , capturing the city as it awakens. You get to take amazing shots of Süleymaniye Mosque . With the morning light still gentle, we’ll head to Galata Tower in Beyoğlu (formerly Pera), offering photogenic panoramic views of sprawling Istanbul.

After soaking in the views, we’ll return to the hotel for a well-deserved breakfast and a brief rest.

By mid-morning, we’ll embark on a boat tour from Karaköy on the Golden Horn heading to the Balat neighborhood. Our first stop is the noteworthy Iron Church , followed by a visit to the iconic red Fener High School building .

Turkish lunch awaits at a rooftop restaurant in Balat, after which we’ll stroll through Balat’s streets . This area is a great opportunity for photographers who enjoy street photography for capturing candid moments and the neighborhood’s signature colorful houses.

As the day winds down, we’ll head back to the Galata Bridge for sunset. The bridge offers a unique perspective of the several mosques (e.g., New Mosque, Süleymaniye Mosque) and the metro bridge during the golden hour and the blue hour.

Finally, we’ll wrap up the day with a delicious dinner in a Sultanahmet restaurant.

Day 3: Ortaköy Mosque, Grand Bazaar, Çamlıca Hill, and Maiden's Tower

Begin your day with a sunrise session at the scenic Ortaköy Mosque with distant views of the Bosphorus Bridge that connects Europe and Asia. Post sunrise, we’ll explore Arnavutköy , less touristic part of the city, where colorful houses and narrow streets dominate the cityscape.

After this early start, we’ll return to the hotel for breakfast and rest. The mid-day is reserved for the Grand Bazaar in Eminönu, one of Istanbul’s busiest districts. Navigate its vibrant aisles, focusing on a spectrum of shops where Turks sell lanterns, carpets, and spices.

Late lunch is on Çamlıca Hill , one of the lesser visited parts of Istanbul, yet accompanied by sweeping city views. Post-lunch, take some time to photograph Istanbul from this unique vantage point.

We go to Üsküdar to photograph the Maiden’s Tower as it’s one of the best places to watch sunset in Istanbul. Capture its silhouette against the sun, with distant mosques forming a serene backdrop. The scene comes alive when the lights on the Maiden’s Tower illuminate the structure.

Conclude your day with a dinner in a Sultanahmet restaurant.

Day 4: Departure

Our photography tour ends, and after breakfast, you can catch your flight home and contemplate on your experience in the Byzantine and Ottoman empire.

Please note the itinerary is subject to change, primarily due to changing weather conditions. We will do our best so you have an enjoyable experience and can get the best pictures possible, even if it means changing the plan.

Essential Information

You will likely fly to the Atatürk Istanbul Airport (IST) with the rest of the group following from Cappadocia. We will arrange an airport transfer from the airport to the hotel in Sultanahmet and also the transfer to the airport before your departure.

For two full days, we will have a minivan with a local professional driver to take us around.

We will stay at a 4-star or boutique hotel in the Sultanahmet area. We will do our best so that the hotel has a lift.

We’ll have breakfast at the hotel after our morning shoots. We will arrange for restaurants for lunches with a good view, so not only do we satisfy our appetite but also our photography cravings.

Dinners will be either individual or group after we finish our sunset shoots.

Navigating through Istanbul’s diverse terrains can present its own set of challenges, but our photography tour is designed to be accessible for most. 

On average, participants should expect to walk up to 6 km (4 miles) a day, often less.

While some areas may require navigating through bustling streets or slight inclines, our pace will be measured and considerate, ensuring everyone can comfortably capture the city’s beauty without feeling rushed or overly exerted.

Beginner photography experience is sufficient. However, we expect you to know the basics of exposure and composition and be comfortable handling your camera. Terms like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field, bracketing, or self-timer should be in your vocabulary. That being said, you will have your tour leaders ready to help you with your composition or camera settings any time.

Jan is an award-winning landscape and travel photographer and guide based in the Czech Republic. Jan regularly runs photography tours in Prague and the United States and more adventurous photo expeditions in places like Peru. Jan’s instruction on multi-day tours focuses on training each participant to see hidden compositions. Jan’s goal is to ensure each participant comes to understand composition and exposure, yielding more desirable results.

Ferda Şahin

Ferda is an organizer and photographer from Cappadocia; however, she organizes photography tours throughout Turkey. She has more than five years of experience in tourism and photography trips. Photography is mostly a hobby of hers until it comes to horses! Her main field is equine photography. She founded Cappadocia Equine, which offers equine photo tours and horseback riding tours in the Cappadocia area.

Adem Eroğlu

Adem is a professional photographer from Turkey, and he has been photographing for more than ten years. He has several prizes in local and global landscape photography contests, and he also filmed various documentaries for some leading TV channels in Turkey. "I recently took a photographic trip to Capadoccia with Jan Miřacký with whom had the pleasure of doing a photo tour of Prague recently.

We focused mainly in Capadoccia, and secondarily in Istanbul via an extension. The experiences I had were phenomenal. I was a little concerned about the balloon ride, as I had never done one, but I flew many times in small four seater planes. The ride was so smooth and the operators so skilled that it was a total pleasure, including the flawless landing. Of course the pictures of the balloon ride were incredible, from the preparation of the balloons and the view itself from aloft.

Another unforgettable experience was the Salt Lake. I got incredible pics of the mirror-like lake, the horses and the model. The reflections are such that the horizon becomes blurred so it seems like a continuous background with the reddish hue of the sunset.

There were many more such experiences including the pottery demonstration with the smoke machine. We were dead tired towards the end, because we crammed so many things in just a few days, but the experience was incredible. I have also to mention the people that were incredible helpful at all times, from the hotel personnel to the tour guides.

Final Notes

In mid-September, Istanbul experiences the tail end of its summer season, with temperatures becoming milder as autumn approaches. Mornings typically start around 15-18°C (59-64°F) and can warm up to daytime highs of 20-25°C (68-77°F). Evenings might be slightly cooler, so it’s advisable to have layers. Rain can be sporadic, so packing a compact umbrella or a raincoat might be handy.

For women planning to enter mosques, it’s essential to dress modestly. This typically means wearing long skirts or pants, a top with sleeves, and a scarf or shawl to cover the head. Carrying a lightweight scarf in your bag is a practical approach, ensuring you’re always ready to step into these sacred spaces respectfully.

Yes, non-photographers are also welcome. The tour price for non-photographers is the same as for photographers.

What if I want to shoot other attractions?

Istanbul tells stories of a big city with rich history and in three days, we cannot fit everything in the itinerary. There are attractions such as the Ottoman treasure named Topkapi Palace, Spice Market, Basilica Cisterns, Taksim Square and streets of Istiklal, that simply didn’t make it in our itinerary for various reason. Our itinerary is balanced so you can photograph a variety of subjects. Consider spending an extra day to visit some of the attractions not included in our program.

On this exclusive tour led by local guide and photographer, you will get a chance to be in the heart of the action.

You will start the day at Galata Tower where you can see the panoramic views of the city, we will then walk over the Galata Bridge and wander around the Eminönü district, famous for its small streets full of shops and people.

You will walk through the Spice Market and have lunch at the classic Pandeli Restaurant. We will then drive to the historical Fener and Balat neighborhoods , where you can see wooden houses and the famous Phanar Greek Orthodox College from outside.

These neighborhoods have become very popular for movie and commercial shoots and are some of the few untouched neighborhoods in the city. We will end the tour with a  charming ride on a fisherman’s boat along the beautiful waters of the Golden Horn .

Street Photography Walk in Istanbul

Istanbul photography walk is the perfect combination of urban discovery and photography. Starting from Istiklal Avenue, we explore the historic neighborhoods of Galata, Karaköy, Fatih and Zeyrek. We stroll through narrow-side streets, cross over the Golden Horn, stop at venues of historic significance and impressive scenery and catch beautiful spontaneous moments on the streets of Istanbul. The tour lasts about 5 hours. Before we start our photo walk, we offer a short introduction to basic photography (for beginners only) and a briefing on the photo-walk by your guide to learn about your specific areas of interest.

Highlights: 

Tünel and Galata neighborhoods: The historical Galata neighborhood slopes down the hill from Beyoglu (Pera) towards the Golden Horn. For centuries, this was a cosmopolitan outpost of European traders in the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, and the ancient monuments and citadel walls are still visible in its maze of streets. Today, the district is home to numerous boutiques and vintage shops along with mansions and embassies that survive from that time, continuing to exude their elegance as museums, art galleries and restaurants. These streets have been through many transformations over the decades, but always represent Istanbul’s beating, complex, and countercultural heart.

Fatih and Zeyrek neighborhoods: Fancy a taste of old-world Istanbul? Fatih and Zeyrek are two neighborhoods in the heart of the city that will transport you back to the 16th century! From the stunning Sehzade Mosque, to Fatih Kadınlar Pazarı, one of Istanbul's oldest markets, Fatih and Zeyrek give you a unique insight into the city's history. Built in the 16th century, the Sehzade Mosque is a sight to behold, with its four towering minarets and intricate Ottoman tiling. Fatih Kadınlar Pazarı will remind you of another era as you wander through the colorful stalls filled with local eateries, specialty food shops, traditional fabrics, spices, fruits and vegetables. Zeyrek Mosque is recognized as one of the oldest surviving Byzantine structures in Istanbul. Built between 1117-1136 CE, this structure is a melting pot of different architectural styles. Its terrace has some of the best views of the Golden Horn.

Local Tea and Coffee Shops: On average, Turks drink about 7-8 cups of tea per day, so it’s no surprise that there are many tea and coffee houses all around the city. On this tour, we visit a very local tea house where we have a chance to photograph the local tradition of tea and backgammon. Following this, needless to say, we will sit down for a glass of tea or Turkish coffee.

Cats of Istanbul: Istanbul is a cat city. There are all kinds and colors of cats all around the city. You’ll spot them in restaurants, shops, houses, sidewalks, roofs and even on the public boats! Local people take care of these street cats. We will visit a neighborhood with one of the city’s highest populations of feline inhabitants.

Graffiti and Murals of Istanbul: In Istanbul you can find building length murals, train graffiti and stencil art all around the city. Some car park owners even allow artists to cover both exterior and interior walls of their properties. We pop into one such car park in the back streets of Istiklal.

Antique Stores and Designer Shops: Walking through these neighborhoods full of antique stores, you’ll come across anything from the 18th century Ottoman hand-made ceramics to Far-east Asian art, and from vintage sunglasses to traditional copper work. This is a great opportunity for photographers interested in shooting vintage scenes.

Impressive Istanbul Buildings: The interesting architecture of Istanbul comes in an array of styles. On this day, you will experience many different architectural styles ranging from three storey wooden houses with cumba (wooden bay windows), Ottoman and Byzantine architecture, art nouveau, 19th century belle epoque… etc.

Best Photography Spots In Istanbul: Overall

1. best photography spots in istanbul: sultanahmet arkeolojik park (sultan ahmet square).

This area, in-between the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, was the former Hippodrome of Constantinople where chariot and horse races were held. Hippodromes were a staple in Greek cities for these reasons, and this one dates back to 203 AD, when the city known as Byzantium was re-built by Septimius Severus.

While the Hippodrome was basically destroyed in the Crusades, today monuments that Theodosius brought over at the time can still be found in the area. These include the Serpent Column (from Delphi ), the Obelisk of Theodosius, Obelisk of Thutmose III (from Egypt ), and the Walled Obelisk.

2. Best Photography Spots In Istanbul: Bosphorus Boat Ride

The Bosphorus Strait is the narrowest strait in the world used for international travel. It used to be known as the Strait of Constantinople, and Bosporus Thracius in Herodotus’s Histories .

3. Best Photography Spots In Istanbul: Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia was originally built as a church by the Roman Emperor Justinian I between 532-537. It was the original embodiment of Byzantine architecture.

In 2020, Istanbul’s Council of State reclassified the Hagia Sophia as a mosque – which was condemned by many people and organizations, including UNESCO and world leaders.

Update: As of January 15, 2024, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul has reopened its upper gallery after closure since 2020, but with notable changes. Non-Muslim visitors over the age of 8 now face a €25 (850 TL) entrance fee, and most of the ground floor is off-limits. More changes include:

– There are now two distinct entrances catering to different demographics. The entrance on Sultanahmet Square is exclusively reserved for Turkish citizens, offering access to the worship area within the former narthex and nave. For individuals of “Other Nationalities,” a dedicated entrance at the northeast corner, denoted as the “Visiting Area,” has been established.

– Women visitors must now wear a headscarf, available for purchase near the worship area entrance for 30 TL.

– Professional guides are no longer allowed inside; you’ll need to scan a QR code on your phone for an audio-visual tour (headsets cost 100 TL/€3 but you can use your own).

Areas Now Off-Limits for Foreign Visitors at Hagia Sophia:

• Southwest Vestibule: Visitors must exit after viewing the 10th-century mosaic of emperors Justinian and Constantine presenting Hagia Sophia to Mary and the Christ child.
• The ornate oak-and-brass Imperial Door
• The intricate details of the rich marble-paneled walls are off-limits.
• Restricted access to the omphalion, where Byzantine emperors were historically crowned.

Photo tips for mosques in Istanbul: Always look up and photograph the domes. Also use ISO for low light. Be aware of the dress code for mosques, and go when it’s not prayer time.

4. Best Photography Spots In Istanbul: Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque, which is also called the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is right across Sultan Ahmet Square from the Hagia Sophia. It’s known for all its blue tiles on the walls inside, as well as the blue on the domes, as the name implies – which makes it fantastic for photos!

The Blue Mosque is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was built during 1609-1616.

5. Best Photography Spots In Istanbul: Ortaköy Mosque

The Ortaköy Mosque, also known as Büyük Mecidiye Cami, is small but still one of the most popular tourist sites because of these photo ops:

• View of the Bosphorus Strait and the Bosphorus Bridge from its precarious spot overlooking the sea
• The domes and minarets on the exterior, and the interior dome
• The lighting on the inside. Because the mosque is small with many windows, the light coming in is great for photos!

6. Best Photography Spots In Istanbul: Mısır Çarşısı: aka the Spice Bazaar or Egyptian Bazaar

The Spice Bazaar is smaller than the Grand Bazaar, but it’s more popular for photography in Istanbul. It’s more colorful and fun because the vendors offer samples. It’s located in the Fatih district’s Eminönü quarter.

Photo tip: Many of the stalls have “no photography” signs – be sure to find places without those for your photos. Some stalls ask for a tip, or you can buy something from them.

7. Best Photography Spots In Istanbul: Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace is one of my personal favorite places for photography in Istanbul – the grounds are large and there are multiple unique photo spots!

Photo ops: Four major courtyards, multiple buildings with unique architectural styles and indoor displays to check out, and views over the Bosphorus.

Buildings at the palace include:

• Hagia Eirene
• Gate of Salutation (or Middle Gate)

Rumelihisarı , or Rumeli Fortress was built between 1451-52. This was a stop on the Bosphorus boat cruise, and it was well worth it – not only were there absolutely amazing views of the Bosphorus (like the one above), but we also got to explore the fortress and grounds, where you can find even more great photo spots (just look at those towers)!

The towers include one small tower, 3 main towers, and 13 wall watchtowers.

The Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi Museum) is an icon in Istanbul, so a must-see photo spot in the city! You can climb up to the top for a view, but the lines are insane – so, you can also pick one of the numerous rooftop locations listed later in the guide instead (or do both)!

The tower was built as a watchtower at the highest point of the city wall. There’s also a museum you can visit inside.

Photo tips: Photos are great here at night as well as during the day. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds, and also if you’re going to be in the photo, take it from a distance (like in the photo above) or you won’t be able to get the whole tower in the photo!

11. süleymaniye mosque.

The  Süleymaniye Mosque is a giant mosque that was built in 1550 that is amazing for photos – it’s unique from others you’ll see mostly because of the size. It was the largest mosque in the city for well over 400 years, and was only surpassed in 2019 by the Çamlıca Mosque.

It’s one of the most visited sites in Istanbul and has an amazing Bosphorus view over the Golden Horn.

There are all kinds of photo ops to discover in this exquisite mansion, which includes:

The Theodosius Cistern is another one of the many ancient cisterns in Istanbul, and its entrance is in the Fatih district, in the Çemberlitaş neighbourhood. It’s open for visitors so you can take photos of the marble columns, arches, and more. It’s smaller, but also a century older than the Basilica cistern!

The Grand Bazaar is the largest one in Istanbul, as well as being among the largest and most ancient covered markets on the planet. It has 61 covered streets and more than 4,000 shops to explore and photograph (as long as the signs don’t say no photos).

Galata Mevlevi lodge , house and museum (or Galata Mevlevihanesi) is, most notably, where you can see the Whirling Dervishes perform.

The lodge was built in 1491 and is a Mawlawi house – the first in the city. It became a museum in 1975 dedicated to teaching about the Mevlevi Sufi Islam sect.

Yedikule Fortress, aka the Fortress (or Dungeons) of the Seven Towers, is a fortified complex that was built in 1458 by Theodosius and is located in Fatih, in the Yedikule neighborhood, in a section of the ancient walls with the Golden Gate, which was the grand entrance to Istanbul.

This area is where you can find all the most photographed places in Istanbul, so it’s definitely worth exploring and photographing all that you can!

Places like the Hagia Sophia, Hippodrome, Churches, Obelisks, Aqueduct of Valens, Basilica Cistern, Galata Tower, and more can be found within the Old City.

21. Balat District

Büyükada Island is the largest of nine Islands that make up the Princes’ Islands, which are located in the Sea of Marmara, which takes an hour by ferry to reach from Istanbul.

The island is car-free, and is filled with Victorian houses, gardens, and walking trails – plus, you can rent a bike and tour the island that way, too. You can get amazing views for photos here, without the crowds most of the time!

You can find one synagogue, churches, the Museum of the Princes’ Islands, and many hotels here as well.

29. ice cream vendors.

The ice cream in Istanbul is thick and chewy (thanks to an ingredient called mastic , which also keeps it from melting as fast), which allows it to stick to the cone – and allows the vendors to pull these amazing tricks that you’ll fall for every time.

Also, you can’t get this anywhere else because if they sell too much, it threatens the local plant that mastic is made from – so, you have to go to Istanbul!

This is definitely one of the best photo ops in Istanbul, but of course you may want to also take videos!

30. Rainbow Stairs

The Raibow Steps, painted in 2013 by Hüseyin Çetinel, have become one of the most popular Instagram spots in Istanbul. They’re located near Gezi Park and link the districts of Findikli and Cihangir, along the Bosphorus, off the Salıpazarı tram stop.

The steps actually have a cool story – after being painted, the government painted back over them (making them grey). Then, the public made it known on social media they wanted the rainbow colors back, and they started painting other staircases rainbow colors. Eventually, the government let the steps be re-painted.

31. Küçüksu Pavilion

The Küçüksu Pavilion, located on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, is a popular spot for Instagram photos because it’s so ornate. It’s a “little” summer home that was used by royalty. I saw it as a stop on the Bosphorus cruise.

You can find more than one umbrella street in Istanbul, but Hoca Tahsin (located in Karaköy) is a well-known spot for Instagram photos because there is also a lot of street art here as well. The nearest tram stop is Tophane.

Çiçek Pasajı (originally named Cité de Péra) is a historic passageway, or galleria or arcade, located on İstiklal Avenue and Sahne Street, where they connect. There’s also an entrance to the Fish Market, or Balık Pazarı.

34. Galeri Kayseri Bookshop

Galeri Kayseri Bookshop is a located in Sultanahmet, not far from the Hagia Sophia, and it’s filled with books by local authors in English (being the archaeology nerd I am, I also got a textbook with local Hittite archaeology).

There are actually two shops across the street from each other, so go to both for even more selection! The owner is really friendly as well. It’s well known because it was the first bookstore to offer only English books for the demand from tourists.

There are some really cool fiction books by local authors, but also, you can get some great bookstore photos here – not only of the stores, but also the street with them!

Salt Galata is known for its architecture. It was designed by French Levantine architect Alexandre Vallauri, and originally was the Imperial Ottoman Bank’s headquarters and now functions as a research library. It has one facade that’s Neoclassical style, and another which is Orientalist.

The Maiden’s Tower, or Leander’s Tower, has been around since the Byzantine period and is located on an islet at the southern end of the Bosphorus. The station and tower were originally created for ships arriving from the Black Sea, in 408 BC. Over the years it went through many changes, earthquakes and more.

Today, the tower is temporarily closed as it has been undergoing renovations. You can still get photos of the tower, which is one of the world’s most photographed sites, with the landscape and cityscape behind it . Just take the ferry or a boat tour and get pics from close by, or get photos from the shore.

The Sapphire Shopping Mall is one of the tallest buildings in Istanbul, and there’s a 360-degree panoramic view of the city from the 54th floor. There’s an entry ticket fee (that also includes a movie about Istanbul), and also a cafe and restaurant you can visit. The elevator takes you to the 66th floor for the highest views over Istanbul.

48. Taht Istanbul

Taht Istanbul is a popular professional photo studio for Istanbul rooftop photoshoots – you can use your own equipment or book a shoot, and they even have costumes you can rent.

If the weather is bad in Istanbul, or if you just can’t get the photos you want, this is an alternative option (there are also professional photo tours of the city further down in this guide).

Pierre Loti Tepesi is located on a hill in Istanbul and is known for its amazing views. There’s also a famous cafe from the 18th century here, and you can take a cable car to the top to get great photos!

The hill and cafe are named after the famous French author Pierre Loti.

There is also a Little Çamlıca Hill, not to be confused with this one. Big Çamlıca Hill is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, in the Üsküdar district. There’s a panoramic view of the Bosphorus and Golden Horn here, with a public park, Ottoman-themed teahouses, cafes and a restaurant.

You can also get photos from Çamlıca Tower, the tallest tower in Europe, which has observation deck, restaurants like 360 Kule, and a hotel .

Tip: You’ll need to make reservations for the restaurants, and there’s a fee for the tower. The tower is open every day except Sundays from 10am-9pm on weekdays and from 10am-9pm on Saturdays. Nighttime is a great time to get photos from here!

54. istanbul archaeology museums.

The Istanbul Archaeological Museums (İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri) are comprised of three museums: The Archaeology Museum, The Museum of Ancient Orient, The Tiled Kiosk Museum.

They’re located in the same area, but you’ll need to make sure you go to all of them if you want to see everything – though, I’m pretty sure you could spend days exploring this place! There are around a million artifacts in the archaeology museum alone to discover here from various cultures.

The museum is rare for its neo-classical architecture as a museum in the time it was constructed. It’s located in the Sultanahmet neighborhood and connects Gülhane Park with Topkapı Palace (I walked here after the Palace, then went onto the Park)!

There’s Hittite finds, an Egyptian section, archaeological finds and so much more here – it’s really amazing!

55. The New Arter Museum

The New Arter Museum is a contemporary art museum located in the Dolapdere district of Istanbul. You can see the art and go to events, as well as photographing the unique architecture of the building itself.

56. Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (Istanbul Modern)

Istanbul Modern has been located in the Beyoğlu district, but is currently moving to Karaköy. It’s a museum of modern Turkish art.

Avoid scams and pickpockets – like in any big city, there will be some of this around. However, Istanbul is a great city to visit and you’re not very likely to run into many issues!

What to Consider for Photography in Istanbul

👉 Time of Day. When in doubt, arrive early! You’ll avoid the crowds this way and will have places to yourself. Also, make sure to take advantage of golden hour, sunset and nighttime in Istanbul – you can get amazing photos at these times of the day.

👉 Weather. When I visited Istanbul, I had to brave the rain a couple of times. I actually got some great cloudy-day shots – they added drama to my photos. Just make sure you watch where the sun is and see that it’s behind you when possible, especially if you’re the subject. Also, check your ISO settings for what works for the amount of brightness outside.

👉 Tripod Rules & Regulations . Some locations, like the Basilica Cistern, don’t allow tripods – so just ask when in doubt, and be prepared for anything! Make sure your camera settings are set to avoid shakiness if you can’t use a tripod, especially in dark settings.

You can pick up an Istanbul Kart at any of the major transit stations, including the airport, Sultanahmet, and Eminönü. Look for the Biletmatik, or ticket machines to purchase a card. There’s a fee to purchase the actual card, and then you can choose how much to load the card with. Make sure to get the anonymous ( anonim ) card, which doesn’t include a photo, for touring.

Inner Turkey has a fascinating collection of UNESCO regions and cities such as Cappadocia, Kuşadasi, Pergamum and Assos. We begin with the moonscape hills and stunningly beautiful villages of Turkey’s Cappadocia region, all sights to behold. Located in the center of Turkey, the Cappadocia region includes the towns of Avanos, Göreme, Nevşehir, Ortahisar, Uçhisar and Ürgüp. We will explore the underground cities, ancient Christian cave art, numerous hiking trails and volcanos, “fairy chimney” rock formations, and take a sunrise hot air balloon ride for a view of the breathtaking landscape from above. We will also visit the atmospheric city Selçuk. Ephesus, including the House of the Virgin Mary, where she is believed to have spent her last few days.

For your convenience, we offer optional early arrival and late departure accommodations so you can extend your stay before or after the trip. We typically stay in upscale boutique hotels in the 4 and 5-star category. Not all destinations offer these types of properties. We look for unique hotels that offer cultural, historic, and/or authentic features. Depending on the size of the group, smaller boutique hotels may have limited room inventory. In some countries or in remote locations, we may be limited to lodges or branded chain hotels. In Cuba, we stay in upscale family-owned Casas (bread & breakfasts). Istanbul & turkey  12  days, day 1 | istanbul.

We meet in the morning at our hotel in the Sultanahmet section of Istanbul. We begin with an informal discussion on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques.

After we will take a photo walk of this magnificent and magical city, home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites. We’ll explore the Galata Bridge which links Old Istanbul and Beyoğlu via the Golden Horn. Walk north through Karaköy (Galata) and uphill to Galata Tower.

In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Istanbul restaurants.

Day 2 | Istanbul - Cappadocia - Red Valley - Uçhisar

After breakfast we depart for the airport and fly to amazing Cappadocia. En route we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique.

In Cappadocia we begin by visiting one of the fascinating subterranean cities complete with a ventilation system and a water well. We’ll visit a winery with rolling stone doors and focus on soft light photography in the Red Valley and the natural rock citadel of Uçhisar.

Our Cave Hotel will amaze you. It is carved into the side of a mountain, as are many of the homes, hotels and churches in Cappadocia. (B) (L)

Day 3 | Cappadocia - Göreme Valley - Fairy Chimneys - Zelve

Cappadocia is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Göreme Valley. The lunar like landscape of this region is eerie, yet beautiful. Over thousands of years, the rain has eroded this landscape to give rise to strange rock formations known as “Fairy Chimneys”. Many of these have homes and churches carved into them. Some of the grottos are magnificently decorated with colorful frescoes depicting biblical scenes. Just imagine the amazing photographic opportunities!

In the afternoon we visit Zelve, which became one of the most important settlements and religious centers for the Christian community between the 9th and 13th centuries. (B) (L)

Day 4 | Cappadocia - Balloon - Dervent Valley - Pasabagi

We depart in the early morning hours for an optional Hot Air Balloon (additional fee) ride over Cappadocia. Here we will capture the morning light and photograph the intense rock formations in the Dervent Valley. In the afternoon and evening we work on some soft light photography in the hidden monastic valley of Pasabagi. (B)

Day 5 | Izmir - Kuşadasi

After breakfast we depart for Kayseri Airport for a domestic flight to Izmir, where we will begin our exploration of the western coast of Turkey. Upon arrival we will transfer to Kuşadasi and our hotel by the sea. Here you can rest and enjoy the features of our wonderful hotel or walk the streets and docks of the seaside village.

Day 6 | Selçuk - Ephesus - Şirince

After breakfast we devote the entire day to sightseeing in and around the atmospheric city Selçuk. Ephesus, the largest ancient city ever uncovered, includes an amphitheater which can still hold 24,000 spectators, marble covered streets, gymnasiums, public latrines, the library of Celsus and the temple of Artemis.

Next we visit the House of the Virgin Mary, where she is believed to have spent her last few days. And finally the historic hill village of Şirince, where we will photograph the old houses and local merchants. Dinner is included. (B) (D)

Day 7 | Kuşadasi - Istanbul - Palaces - Spice Bazaar

On day seven we depart Kuşadasi for our return flight to Istanbul and check back into our hotel. After lunch we begin our photo walk of this magnificent and magical city, home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites. We’ll explore the Spice Bazaar where the scent of hundreds of spices permeates the air, and then embark on a cruise of the Bosphorus. Along the way we will view the Dolmabahçe Palace and the Beylerbeyi Palace, a 19th century palace on the Asian side of Istanbul. Dinner is included. (B) (D)

Day 8 | Istanbul - Blue Mosque - Topkapi Palace - Grand Bazaar

We begin our day before sunrise with a walk through Sultanahmet. After breakfast we view the amazing Blue Mosque whose interior walls are covered with 20,000 blue Iznik tiles. After we will visit the magnificent Topkapi Palace, once home to the great Sultans and filled with treasures and antiquities including 12,000 pieces of fine Chinese porcelain.

We then enjoy a wonderful lunch at the Konyali Restaurant, located within the gardens of Topkapi Palace with its amazing views of the Marmara Sea and the Asian Side of Istanbul. We continue to explore the Hippodrome and domed Basilica of St. Sophia, which has inspired architects and religious leaders for over 1,500 years. And finally the Grand Bazaar, built in 1457. (B)

Day 9 | Istanbul - Beyoğlu - Karaköy (Galata) - Taksim Square

We start with a brief review of some of your favorite photos to date. Then we explore the romance of late Ottoman Istanbul on a walking photo tour of Beyoğlu, and a visit to the sultan’s most lavish palace. We start with Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn which links Old Istanbul and Beyoğlu. Take in the view, then walk north through Karaköy (Galata) and uphill to Galata Tower. İstiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue) is the heart of Beyoğlu, the more modern district of Istanbul built during the 19th century. We’ll visit Taksim Square which is the heart of modern Istanbul.

After lunch we go downhill to Dolmabahçe Palace. With a façade almost 400 meters (1/4 mile) long, this is the mother of all Ottoman palaces, and a must-see if you’re into magnificence. The evening is yours. We suggest possibly trying the Turkish Baths. It’s a great way to end a long day. (B)

Day 10 | Istanbul - Black Sea - Şile - Ağva - Maiden’s Tower

We depart Istanbul early in the morning for a day trip to the Black Sea villages of Şile & Ağva. Heading northeast of Istanbul on the Anatolian side, we will arrive in Şile, a small Black Sea fishing town situated on rocks. Known for its sandy beaches and famous Şile bezi, an open-weave cotton fabric, it is the perfect first stop. Once a port of call for ships sailing east from the Bosphorus, enjoy a stroll along the fishing harbor or relax with a tea at the hilltop cafe overlooking the Şile lighthouse.

On the way to Ağva we come across picturesque traditional Turkish villages like Kabakoz and Suaybli where time seems to have stood still. So near to Istanbul distance-wise, yet so far in their way of life. Experience the friendless and curiosity of these villagers.

Continuing along the coastal route we arrive in Ağva, deep in nature and situated between the Yesilcay and Göksu rivers that flow into the Black Sea. Upon arrival you will find peace in a leisurely boat ride down the Göksu river. Set in a landscape so green and rich, bask in the sights of Ağva. After taking in a magnificent view overlooking the sea and bluffs, we will break for lunch where you may dine on the local fish.

Next you will have a choice to truly unwind in the beauty of the Black Sea region by either relaxing along the Göksu river, or on one of Ağvas sandy beaches. Surrounded by forest and cliffs, the fresh, blue green waters of the sea are calling you. Get lost in nature. In the late afternoon we return to Istanbul and photograph to famous Maiden Tower at sunset on the Asian side of Istanbul. (B)

Day 11 | Istanbul - Sultanahmet - Basilica Cistern

We begin our morning with a photography discussion and a review of work to date. Afterwards we depart for several neighborhoods in old Istanbul with a focus on photojournalism and street photography. We will visit the Basilica Cistern – the largest underground reservoir in the city, constructed in the 6th century to supply water to the Great Palace of Constantinople, Topkapi Palace and others.

In the evening we prepare for our “Farewell Dinner” at another one of our favorite restaurants of Istanbul. (B) (D)

Day 12 | Istanbul

While enjoying breakfast we conduct our final group discussion, review our past weeks photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell. You may however, book extra nights with us and extend your stay in Europe or Asia and apply all the wonderful photographic techniques you learned on this photo adventure. (B)

As you drift over gorgeous valleys and rock formations, indulge in the captivating sight of the sunrise and odd landscapes below. Or instead, in all their vibrant magnificence, you can always make your way up a hill to watch the balloons take off and fly into the sky.

There are many organized trips claiming to be photo tours. Many of them are merely-and no less- than a photographic holiday. But there is a difference, each stage of Nomad Photo Expeditions adventure in Turkey has been designed taking advantage of the personal “on-site” experience and pinpointing new opportunities, special spots. And this is not only about photography: we care about the local culture, food, atmosphere and most of all, the people.

It is not a sum of photographs, clichés or postcards. We carefully put on our side all the odds in order to secure a better and unique photographic experience.

Is it the right place for a photography trip?

Turkey is one of the most photogenic countries in the world. Being there seeking for the magical photographic moment is about planning but also organizing in advance how to be at the right moment when and where things can happen. 

The visitor discovering Istanbul for the first time will be surprised by the assumed presence of women in public space, dressed in Western style, drinking a beer on a terrace.  Turkish women gained the right to vote in 1934, ten years before French women Single women can travel freely in Istanbul and Turkey.

The Turks' hospitality and art of living make us forget about the country's tense political climate. Istanbul is safer than London, and safer than the majority of European capitals. In the city, crime is almost non-existent, and one never feels unsafe.

The conflict with the Kurds has resurfaced following the withdrawal of American troops from Syria but the main conflictive areas are net to the border with Syria.

With 16 million inhabitants, half of whom are under the age of 20, Istanbul it is a cosmopolitan city where all communities mix, from hipsters to ultra-religious. Mosques, palaces, churches, and synagogues: we are aware of the former Byzantine capital's rich heritage, but it is also one of the strongholds of contemporary creation, with a thriving art scene.

You would think that because you are in Istanbul things are going to happen magically. Witnessing a special opportunity is not just a matter of knowing how to reach a place. Most times the challenge is how to gain access to a promising photographic opportunity, how to open the door: be it a local bar, a fishermen’s place or, a secluded mosque.

And when we talk travel photography, we need contacts, time, experience, and a sixth sense that develops only after much time invested in similar places and different parts of the world.

How will I find the best photographic spot?

Travel Photographers are not happy having to disclose their secret places. Everyone likes to have his own very special image, his own undisclosed spot. And there are many hidden gems in a country like Turkey, and even more in Istanbul.

A surprising country when visited with the perspective of a photo tour. You need good information in order to avoid the touristy images. A challenge if you bear in mind that countless locations have, at this moment of time, turned into cultural icons and very conventional images.

The so said “photographic guidebooks” are mainly non-existing and when a guide claims to be “photographic” you usually find get a description of a number of spots that are mostly oriented to tourists with a camera and, finally, you find yourself lost in a photographic holiday, far away from the idea of a photo tour. And, as we know, there is a big difference between a tourist with a camera or a passionate photographer on a photographic tour to Turkey.

Where do we stay in our Turkey Photo Adventure?

When in Istanbul we remain in the old part of the city. This allows for an easy, and speedy access to the most interesting monuments. Location is key, and the logistics in a photo tour can save you an enormous amount of time. We choose comfortable hotels wherever they are available but, and, our biggest consideration is a convenient accommodation near the place where action is. Photographic action, of course…

We certainly care about the cultural environment and, whenever we can, we try to be in authentic places. On this trip to Turkey we will also spend the night in a small village in the only - and comfortable - local hotel.
