Visiting the prison

Booking a visit - domestic visits (Family & Friends)

Prisoners are responsible for booking their own visits; this is done by using an application on the Central Management System (CMS) – accessed via touchscreen computer terminals that are located on each unit in the establishment. Once a visit has been approved it is up the individual prisoner to inform his family and friends of the date and time of the visit.

The maximum time a visit can be booked is 14 days in advance and the minimum is 3 days in advance.

Prisoners can book up to 3 adult visitors per session and 3 children less than 18 Years of age. However, if the child is over 17 they will be classed as an adult.

It is the responsibility of the prisoner to book and inform friends and family of the time and date of visits.

Staff are not responsible for booking or informing family and friends of visits or cancellation of visits.

It is also the responsibility of the prisoner to inform visitors of correct identification requirements as well as other visit regulations, however visitors are encouraged to check the website for further details.

For sending correspondence / emails to your family or friend in prison, you can take advantage of the emailaprisoner.com system. Please log on to https://www.emailaprisoner.com and follow the instructions.

HMP Oakwood was originally called Featherstone 2 and was designed to be one of the government’s controversial ‘titan’ establishments. However, the prison was then downsized and now has a capacity of 1,605. It became operational in 2012 and is managed privately by G4S. Despite not being a ‘titan’ prison, the establishment still remains one of the largest in the UK. It is a category C adult male prison.

Here’s some facts about Oakwood Prison

HMP Oakwood is a category C prison in Featherstone, Staffordshire. Opened in April 2012, the prison has capacity to hold 1,605 male inmates.

The prison has 6 wings (A-F) named after species of tree. Ash wing holds the vulnerable prisoner population. Beech and Cedar hold the general population. Douglas holds the “lifer” population. Elm holds the general population, and is the family unit. Fir is the segregation unit.

A prison officer was attacked in February 2017 by an inmate. A single punch from the inmate fractured the officer’s skull and caused bleeding from the brain. This occurred months after Paul Hobbs attacked a different guard with a mug. The pair fell on the cell bed, Hobbs grabbed a mug, smashed it over the officer’s head, and proceeded to attempt to gouge his eyes with this fingers

There are many times for visits.. For more information, click here .

A further report in 2014 revealed that HMP Oakwood had called ambulances 358 times in 2013; over double the amount of times than any other UK prison.

Following riots in Birmingham and Kent prisons , G4S launched investigations, and there was ‘no intelligence’ that trouble could start.

The prison got its name from the oak tree in neighbouring Boscobel Wood, where Charles II supposedly hid from Oliver Cromwell’s men during the Civil War.

Prison Phone offers phone tariffs that reduce the costs of calls from this prison by up to 75%! This enables prisoners to get the support and love that they are missing from home, while reducing costs for the inmate. Find out more below.
