For some cruisers, the glitz and glamour is all part of the appeal, and donning black-tie attire is the highlight of their trip. For others, being on holiday is a chance to relax without the formality of dressing up for dinner, embracing the more casual style of sunnier climes.

It's a common misconception that luxury cruises are all dinner jackets and ballgowns, but there are plenty of options for those who prefer a more laid-back style of luxury holiday. If that sounds like you then here is our guide to some of our favourite small ships and cruise lines where you won't need to pack your tux...

1. SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream's twin vessels SeaDream I and SeaDream II cater to a maximum of just 112 guests, and the line's motto is 'It's yachting, not cruising'. Sailing in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, the ambience on board mirrors the luxury resorts that you'll find ashore. Gentlemen can leave their jackets at home, whilst ladies can ditch the ball gown and cocktail dresses. If it's suitable for the Eden Roc in St Barths, or for an evening stroll along the waterfront in Cannes, then you'll fit right in.

2. Windstar Cruises

We refer to Windstar's laid-back style as 'the Big Chill'. Whether you're on one of their three sail assisted yachts or their all-suite former Seabourn ships, you'll be travelling with fewer than 350 fellow guests, with a focus on your itinerary rather than dressing for dinner. There are no formal nights, and with a predominantly American crowd you can expect the 'casual elegance' evening dress code to lean rather more towards the casual. Informal cocktail dresses for women and collared shirts, polos and trousers for men are ideal.

3. Scenic Eclipse

Australian company Scenic describe their flagship Scenic Eclipse as 'the world's first discovery yacht', offering trips to both classic cruise destinations such as the Mediterranean and expedition-style voyages to places like Antarctica. As with all expedition ships there is no requirement to dress up in the evenings, and a mainly Australian contingent on board means your fellow guests will know how to adopt a relaxed style appropriate for warmer weather. Having said that, you may wish to get a little more dressed up if you're heading to the Teppanyaki grill at Koko's, the ship's superb Asian fusion restaurant, or the Champagne bar at Lumière, with its contemporary French fine dining.

4. Silversea Expeditions

Silversea's expedition itineraries are designed to maximise your experience of the destination. With your days spent exploring ashore, evenings are all about relaxing and enjoying the superb food and exceptional service that Silversea is known for. It's important to note that the rest of Silversea's fleet is more formal, with some ships offering a mix of expedition and classic cruises, so it's best to call us and talk through the options.

5. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

German cruise line Hapag-Lloyd operates two ships bilingually for the international market. The 500-guest MS Europa 2 operates luxury cruise itineraries and is acclaimed by the noted Berlitz Guide as the best ship in the world. With a contemporary style, light-filled restaurants and open public spaces, the modern approach means no set dress code on board, just the recommendation that a jacket is worn in most restaurants (a tie is not necessary). On board the 230-guest expedition ship Hanseatic Inspiration it's even more relaxed, and a jacket is not required. Do watch out for the more formal style of Europa, another ship in the Hapag-Lloyd fleet, which caters to the German market.

Ponant is a French-flagged cruise line, with a certain Gallic flair on board. Ponant's small ships operate both classic and expedition itineraries, and as such the dress code is laid-back yet stylish. Perhaps a little surprisingly, there are Captain's dinners on board where more formal attire is recommended, but this can take the form of a jacket/dress rather than a black-tie affair. Your itinerary may also include a 'white party', so do check before you pack!

7. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent are firmly in the ultra-luxury category, offering a refined dining experience on board five spacious ships. Unpretentious is the name of the game, so Regent's dress code is on the more relaxed side, described as 'Elegantly Casual': trousers, shirt and jacket (optional) for men, and skirt/trousers with a sweater/blouse for women. On sailings of 16 nights or more, 'Formal' attire is optional on two evenings, where guests are welcome to dress either in line with the 'Elegant Casual' dress code or to opt for a more formal choice of outfit, including gowns and cocktail dresses for ladies, and tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits with tie for gentlemen.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that those lines with a more formal dress code often only insist on this for a few evenings of your cruise, and there are usually dining venues that will remain casual on those nights, so if you've seen an itinerary you like the look of with a cruise line not listed above, do call us to find out just how dressy they are.

You Can Skip Formal Nights on a Cruise – Here’s How

If you are considering taking a cruise you may be wondering if you are able to skip the formal nights on board. I’ve been on 32 cruises to date and have cruised on lines where the formal nights vary greatly. I am personally not a huge fan of formal nights and in this post, we will discuss how I often avoid them so that you can do the same if you’d like to.

What is a Formal Night on a Cruise?

A formal night is an element of traditional cruising where guests wear their finest clothes and enjoy dinner. Many people love having the opportunity to dress up and many have photos taken with the captain. There may be a special formal night menu in the main dining room and there may be additional entertainment.

Can You Skip Formal Nights on a Cruise?

Formal nights on a cruise are not mandatory and it is almost always possible to skip formal night if you don’t want to attend. Skipping formal night may mean dining in a different restaurant, the buffet, or having room service delivered.

It’s important to remember that the type and frequency of formal nights vary by cruise line dramatically. The best thing that you can do is pick a cruise line that aligns with your requirements. There are many cruise lines which have very relaxed or no formal nights at all if you don’t want to take part in formal nights and are able to choose the cruise line that you’re cruising with, consider one of the following:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line (No formal nights, to learn more about this:  Norwegian Cruise Line Don’t Have Formal Nights; Here’s What They Have Instead )
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Marella Cruises
  • MSC Cruise Line

Formal Night Dress Code What to Wear

If you are new to cruising and would like to learn which cruise line is the best fit for you, including how to book for the cheapest price, start here:  How to Cruise For Less

Other Names For Formal Nights:

In recent years a number of cruise lines have started to reduce the dress codes and formality of formal nights. On very few cruise lines will you see a night called a ‘formal’ night anymore.

On other cruise lines, these may be called ‘gala’ nights, ‘elegant’ nights, or ‘dress to impress’ nights. For the purposes of this article when talking about formal nights this means the most formal night of the cruise where many guests choose to dress nicely and some have photos taken with the captain.

On the majority of cruise lines wearing a shirt and trousers for men, and a dress or top/trousers combination for women is almost always enough for the formal night as dress codes have been increasingly relaxed.

Formal Night Dining Alternatives

The formal night dress codes usually only apply to the main dining room. There are some cruise lines such as Cunard where the dress code is applied ship-wide but generally speaking, the formal night dress code is usually only applied to the main dining room.

Even if you don’t want to take part in the formal night you’ll probably still want to take part in dinner but fear not, there are other options where you can have dinner instead of in the main dining room.

The buffet is the most popular and probably most obvious choice when it comes to avoiding formal nights on a cruise. On every night of a cruise, you’ll find the buffet busy, and formal nights are no exception.

Cruise ship buffets usually have VERY relaxed dress codes and you definitely won’t find the same type of atmosphere as you would in the main dining room on formal nights.

On most cruise lines the dress requirements for the buffet are that you are not wearing swimwear and are wearing shoes. Generally speaking, as long as you are dressed you’ll be allowed to dine in the buffet. Some more upscale luxury lines do have dress code requirements such as no jeans or sneakers.

It’s often the case that you’ll find the exact same food being served in the main dining room and the buffet so you may not miss out on the formal night food. On a lot of cruise lines, you’ll find that on a formal night there is a special menu, many of which were created in collaboration with celebrity chefs.

Alternative Dining Venues – Included Dining

The number of dining venues onboard a cruise ship really does vary but on many lines, you’ll have more included dining options than just the buffet and the main dining room. You may find that there is a pizza restaurant onboard, a grab and go section or a more relaxed pub/bar where you can eat.

If you are cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line one of my favorite places to eat is a bar called The Local. The Local serves things like hot dogs, burgers, and chicken wings and is usually open 24 hours a day. It’s a very easy place to dine and food is usually fast.

Before you cruise make sure that you do your research into the ship and find out what food is included. Below are our cruise guides to what food is included on the following lines:

Do Disney Cruises Include Food?

Do Princess Cruises Include Gratuities?

Do Cunard Cruises Include Meals?

Are Costa Cruises All Inclusive?

Do Norwegian Cruise Line Cruises Include Meals?

Do MSC Cruises Include Meals?

Alternative Dining Venues – Speciality Dining

On most cruise ships you’ll find restaurants which are called speciality restaurants. These cost extra and are, in theory, meant to be of higher quality than the food in the main dining room. I have been to a number of speciality restaurants, all of which were very good but I still normally just eat the included food that I’ve already paid for.

Speciality restaurants will often have a different dress code to that of the main dining room so if you didn’t want to partake in the main dining room dress code on formal night speciality dining is a good option.

Some speciality restaurants will have more relaxed dress codes whereas some will have more strictly enforced codes, it’s important to research this before you go.

Room Service

A few years ago I took a cruise with Cunard who have the most strictly enforced dress codes of any cruise line. Formal night dress codes are enforced ship-wide after 6 pm and Cunard cruisers tend to take the dress codes very seriously.

I didn’t want to take part in every formal night so what I did on occasion was stay in my cabin and have room service delivered to me. There is a charge for room service on some cruise lines but with Cunard it is free. Sitting on the balcony while eating dinner was FANTASTIC and I’d strongly recommend it.

To Conclude:

If you do want to go on a cruise and skip formal night this is completely fine. Guests who don’t want to attend formal night are able to eat in the buffet, other restaurants or have room service delivered. On some cruise lines, the formal night dress codes are applied ship-wide but on the majority, you’ll be able to explore and enjoy the ship without dressing formally.

Do I Have To Dress Up on a Cruise? (Casual to Formal Attire)

Last updated on September 16th, 2023 at 07:31 pm

Cruises offer a delightful escape that is filled with relaxation, entertainment, and unforgettable experiences.

Among the many aspects that make cruising special are the designated formal nights, where guests have the opportunity to dress up and indulge in an elegant atmosphere.

Of course, depending on the cruise line you choose, it’s going to affect what you pack for your cruise and that’s why it’s an important thing to know before you go.

While the dress code varies across different cruise lines, including major ones like Royal Caribbean and Carnival, as well as smaller upscale luxury lines, let’s explore the norms and expectations surrounding formal nights on these voyages.

Table of Contents

Royal Caribbean Dress Code

Known for its innovative ships and exciting onboard activities, Royal Caribbean encourages a relaxed approach to formal nights. On their “smart casual” evenings, passengers can opt for more informal attire, such as dresses, skirts, or pantsuits for women, and slacks, collared shirts, and blazers for men.

However, if you prefer a more formal experience, Royal Caribbean also allows for traditional evening wear, including tuxedos and formal gowns.

Per Royal’s website, here are their suggestions for dressing:

Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear on the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch.

Smart Casual: Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcome.

Formal: Make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. There can be 1-3 formal nights during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion.

Depending on the length of the voyage, the number of formal nights will vary:

3/4/5 night cruises – 1 formal night

6 and 7 night cruises – 2 formal nights

8 to 10 night cruises – 2 formal nights

11 to 14 night cruises – 3 formal nights

15 + night cruises – 3 or 4 formal nights

The number of formal nights is at the ship’s discretion and can vary. Know that bare feet are not allowed at any time and tank tops are not permitted in the Main Dining Room or Specialty Dining venues for dinner.

Disney Cruise Line Dress Code

Disney Cruise Line has a specific dress code policy for formal nights, which they refer to as “Optional Dress-Up Nights.” These evenings provide an opportunity for guests to showcase their formal attire and take part in a more elegant atmosphere.

Here is a general description of the formal dress code on Disney Cruise Line:

For adults and older children:

– Men typically wear suits, tuxedos, or dress pants with a jacket and tie. Some guests choose to wear a formal kilt, while others opt for a more relaxed dress shirt and tie.

– Women often wear evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or elegant pantsuits. Some guests also choose to wear dressy skirts or separates paired with a blouse.

For young children:

– Boys often wear dress pants with a dress shirt and a tie, or a suit if preferred.

– Girls typically wear party dresses, formal dresses, or dressy skirts paired with a blouse.

It’s important to note that Disney Cruise Line encourages guests to express their personal style and does not enforce strict formal dress code guidelines. However, they do request that guests refrain from wearing swimwear, tank tops, shorts, or casual jeans during dinner or in the dining rooms on formal nights.

There are some adult-only restaurants on Disney Cruises, and the dress code, per their website is: Adult-exclusive restaurants aboard Disney Cruise Line ships are elegant dining experiences.

Guests are requested to dress in a manner consistent with the restaurant’s atmosphere. Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended. Dress casual attire with a polished look is permitted (such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collared shirts and blouses and lifestyle shoes).

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

Celebrity Cruises has a dress code policy that includes both “Smart Casual” and “Evening Chic” attire. Here’s a description of each:

Smart Casual:

Smart casual attire is the suggested dress code for most evenings on Celebrity Cruises. This includes stylish and comfortable clothing. Examples for men include slacks or nice jeans with a dress shirt or a polo shirt. Women may wear casual dresses, skirts, or pants paired with a blouse or a stylish top. T-shirts, swimsuits, and flip-flops are generally not permitted in the main dining venues during the evening.

Evening Chic:

Evening Chic nights offer an opportunity for guests to dress up a bit more formally, although it is less formal than traditional formal nights on other cruise lines.

During Evening Chic nights, men are encouraged to wear dress pants or slacks with a dress shirt, sports coat, or blazer. Ties are optional, and some guests may choose to wear a suit or a tuxedo.

Women often wear cocktail dresses, elegant skirts or pants with a stylish blouse, or even formal gowns.

It’s important to note that Celebrity Cruises does not strictly enforce formal dress codes like some other cruise lines. Instead, they focus on creating an elegant and stylish atmosphere while still allowing for individual preferences.

However, guests are generally expected to adhere to the suggested dress code guidelines for each evening, especially in the main dining venues and specialty restaurants.

During most evenings, the dress code is referred to as “Cruise Casual.” This means that guests can wear comfortable and relaxed attire such as shorts, jeans, t-shirts, sundresses, and casual skirts. Swimsuits, tank tops, and flip-flops are generally not allowed in the main dining venues during dinner.

Cruise Elegant/Formal:

Carnival Cruise Line also offers one or two “Cruise Elegant” or “Formal” nights, depending on the length of the cruise. On these evenings, guests have the opportunity to dress up more formally, although tuxedos and formal gowns are not required. It’s good to note that Carnival Cruise Line aims to create a relaxed and casual environment where guests can feel comfortable. The dress code is generally more informal compared to some other cruise lines that have formal nights.

According to the Carnival website concerning their dress code, “All guests are expected to ensure their clothing and accessories are respectful to fellow guests.

Specifically, items worn during the cruise should not contain any message that may be considered offensive or contain nudity, profanity, sexual innuendo/suggestions. In addition, clothing/accessories should not promote negative ethnic or racial commentary, or hatred or violence in any form.”

Norwegian Cruise Line Dress Code

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has a flexible dress code policy known as “Freestyle Cruising,” which allows guests to dress as they feel comfortable during their dining experiences. Here is an overview of the dress code on Norwegian Cruise Line:

Resort Casual:

The standard dress code for most dining venues on NCL ships is “Resort Casual.” This means that guests can wear relaxed and casual attire, such as shorts, jeans, t-shirts, sundresses, and skirts. Swimwear, tank tops, and flip-flops are generally not permitted in the main dining venues during dinner.

Specialty Dining:

For specialty dining restaurants, the dress code is also typically “Resort Casual.” However, some specialty restaurants may have slightly more formal or specific dress code requirements. It’s advisable to check with the specific restaurant or consult the dining guide on board for any additional guidelines.

Optional Formal Nights:

NCL does not have mandatory formal nights. Instead, they offer optional dress-up nights called “Norwegian’s Night Out” on select sailings. Guests who wish to dress up can wear more formal attire, such as suits, dresses, or dressy separates. However, it’s important to note that formal attire is not required, and guests can choose to dress casually on these evenings as well.

NCL’s Freestyle Cruising concept allows guests the flexibility to dress as they please, emphasizing a relaxed and casual atmosphere throughout their cruise experience.

However, it’s recommended to review the specific dress code guidelines provided by Norwegian Cruise Line for your particular cruise, as there may be specific requirements or recommendations for certain onboard events or specialty dining venues.

Check out this video; at the very beginning he talks about dress code requirements: Don’t make these Dining Mistakes on Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)

MSC Cruises Dress Code

MSC Cruises has a dress code policy that includes both “Casual” and “Formal” evenings. Here is an overview of the dress code on MSC Cruise Line:

Most evenings on MSC Cruises are designated as “Casual” nights. This means that guests can dress in comfortable and relaxed attire such as shorts, jeans, t-shirts, sundresses, and skirts. However, swimwear, tank tops, and flip-flops are generally not permitted in the main dining venues during dinner.

On select evenings, MSC Cruises holds “Formal” nights, also referred to as “Gala Evenings.” During these evenings, guests are encouraged to dress more formally. Men typically wear suits, tuxedos, or dress pants with a jacket and tie. Women often wear evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or elegant pantsuits.

MSC Cruises has different dress codes for different ships and itineraries. The number of formal nights can vary depending on the length of the cruise, with longer cruises typically featuring more formal evenings.

Additionally, some sailings may include themed dress-up nights, such as “White Party” or “Black & White Night,” where guests can choose to participate by dressing according to the theme.

On their website, MSC has a page on what to wear on a cruise, and it gives you tips for daytime, evening, theme parties, dress restrictions and other information on their dress code.

Holland America Dress Code

Holland America Line has a dress code policy that includes different dress codes for different dining venues and evenings. Here is an overview of the dress codes on Holland America Line:

Smart Casual is the suggested dress code for most evenings on Holland America Line. This means that guests can wear stylish and relaxed attire such as slacks or dress pants with a collared shirt for men.

Women may choose to wear dresses, skirts, or dressy pants with a blouse or a stylish top. Jeans, shorts, t-shirts, swimwear, and flip-flops are generally not allowed in the main dining venues during dinner.

Holland America Line offers Formal nights on select evenings, usually one or two nights during a 7-night cruise. On these nights, guests have the opportunity to dress up more formally. Men often wear suits, tuxedos, or dress pants with a jacket and tie. Women typically wear cocktail dresses, elegant gowns, or dressy pantsuits.

Gala Nights:

In addition to Formal nights, Holland America Line also hosts Gala nights, which are less formal than Formal nights but still require a dressier attire compared to Smart Casual nights. Guests may choose to wear dress pants with a collared shirt for men, and dresses, skirts, or stylish pantsuits for women.

Holland America Line’s dress code policy may vary slightly depending on the specific ship and itinerary. However, they generally maintain a more traditional and elegant atmosphere during dining experiences.

Viking Cruises Dress Code

During dinner, the suggested dress code is typically “elegant casual.” This means that while formal evening wear is not required, guests often opt for stylish and refined clothing. Men might wear slacks or trousers with a collared shirt, while women may choose dresses, skirts, or dressy pantsuits.

Viking Cruises promotes a relaxed and informal atmosphere, so you won’t find formal nights with tuxedos or evening gowns as you might on some other cruise lines. Instead, the focus is on creating a sophisticated yet comfortable environment for guests to enjoy their cruise experience.

Per Viking’s website: “During the day, dress is casual including shorts (if the season is warm), slacks or jeans and comfortable shoes for walking tours. There are no “formal nights” in the evening; recommended evening dress is “elegant casual.”

For ladies, this may include a dress, skirt or slacks with a sweater or blouse; and for gentlemen, trousers and a collared shirt. A tie and jacket are optional.

Some shore excursions visit religious sites that require modesty of dress. To avoid being denied entry, we recommend men wear long pants and refrain from sleeveless shirts; and for women, clothing that covers the knees and tops that are not sleeveless or too revealing.”

The Bottom Line:

Dressing up on formal nights aboard a cruise ship varies across different cruise lines, catering to a range of preferences and atmospheres.

Major lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival offer a more flexible approach, allowing passengers to embrace both formal and smart casual attire.

Upscale luxury cruise lines such as Cunard Line tend to emphasize the elegance and tradition of formal evenings, with stricter dress codes and a refined ambiance.

Whichever cruise line you choose, formal nights provide an opportunity to add an extra touch of glamour to your vacation while enjoying the enchanting atmosphere of the high seas.

The demise of formal nights on cruises: How dress codes are tearing passengers apart

less formal cruises

Gerry Eggert has taken a lot of cruises in his 78 years. But the Chilliwack, B.C., resident has noticed something recently: People aren’t dressing up like they used to.

He took his concerns to Facebook and quizzed a group of fellow Holland America Line fans: “This should draw some controversy!” he began. “My wife and I … don’t particularly like the ‘relaxed’ dress code HAL now allows in their main dining rooms, especially on ‘gala’ formal evenings.” He asked how fellow cruisers in the group felt.

The query struck a nerve and sparked more than a few squabbles, differences of opinion and downright insults.

“Only undertakers wear suits in today’s business environment!” wrote one retiree who doesn’t care to dress up on vacation.

“If you want to dress like a construction worker eat outside with the construction workers!” one woman wrote.

“Dress like you are going somewhere nice, not McDonald’s or Burger King,” someone else suggested.

But the conversation revealed a deeper truth: Formal nights, a holdover from a grand cruising tradition, are becoming less formal — when they exist at all. And while that might be welcome news for travelers who just want to relax on vacation, it’s a sad turn for many who love to dine with a dressed-up crowd.

Recent incident over attire highlights the ambiguity in airline dress codes

“There has been a bit of an evolution in the dress code overall,” says Colleen McDaniel, executive editor of the news and review site Cruise Critic. “It doesn’t mean that everybody loves that. And in fact, many people who visit our message boards who are very much in favor of a formal night — and a formal dress policy — really, really don’t like it when people show up who are not in formalwear.”

Cruise lines typically have a night or two during a sailing where passengers are encouraged to dress up for dinner in certain restaurants and get professional photos taken. The suggested attire varies, but typically, it includes at least a dress, pantsuit or skirt and blouse for women, and dress pants and a collared shirt for men.

Many lines that still host some kind of dressier-than-usual night have eased requirements or made their dress code a mere recommendation. And as the number of dining options on ships has expanded, so have nonformal venues beyond the main dining rooms.

Celebrity Cruises, which describes itself as a “modern luxury” option, changed formal night to “evening chic” in 2015, allowing designer jeans and making a sport coat or blazer option for men. Holland America Line introduced “gala nights” in 2015; while a jacket and tie there is preferred, it is not required. Carnival Cruise Line changed its formal night to “cruise elegant” several years ago, adopting “more of a resort-style dress guideline.” Norwegian Cruise Line has a “dress up or not night.” And Royal Caribbean International recently started holding a “wear your best” night on cruises of five nights or fewer, with the message: “Say goodbye to Formal Night, and hello to Wear Your Best. Get glamorous. Be chic. It’s time to shine — your way.”

For some travelers, the loosened rules signal a disappointing end to a beloved way of life — not just in cruising, but also in society in general. They point out that travelers don’t dress up as much to take a flight, or go out to dinner, or attend a wedding or religious service.

“The change in dress is a reflection of the change in times,” said one user on the Cruise Critic message boards in November.

Many of the companies that have relaxed their policies say they’re responding to preferences of modern passengers, who may prefer a more casual vibe on board, not wanting to load down their luggage with suits or evening gowns. More people are cruising, an estimated 30 million this year, and that growth is coming from travelers who aren’t necessarily looking for fancy experiences, insiders say.

Other lines, many of them newer, eschew the idea of a dedicated formal night altogether, opting for “country club casual” (Oceania), “elegant casual” (Viking Ocean) or merely “more than a bathing suit” (the new Virgin Voyages). Virgin, which launches its first ship next year, has made a point of rethinking almost every element of a cruise — “which includes pesky dress codes,” chief commercial officer Nirmal Saverimuttu said in an email. “If our Sailors want to get fancy and dress up, they’re welcome to, but if they want to keep it cool and casual, we say go for it.”

At least one operator isn’t budging from tradition. Cunard, a line famous for its transatlantic crossings and old-school glamour, holds two or three “gala evenings” every seven days of a sailing where guests are encouraged to “be at your most glamorous when the clock strikes 6 p.m.” That means something like a flowing ball gown for women and a tux, suit or kilt with jacket for men. Bow ties, regular ties or cravats are all acceptable. But even Cunard has nonformal settings where dressed-down can go, including the buffet, casino and pub.

They equated cruises with excess, so these first-timers set sail with a focus on wellness

The wildly varying terms and enforcement policies can lead to some trepidation on the part of new cruisers and head-scratching even for those who’ve been around the ocean a few times.

“A lot of the cruise lines, their terminology has been so nebulous,” says Liam Cusack, managing editor of Cruise & Travel Report and administrator of the Facebook group Holland America Line Fans. “Resort chic — what exactly is that? Or ‘country club casual’ — people don’t know what that is.”

Cruise lines include information about what to wear in their frequently asked questions materials, and many online experts offer tips and explainers to decipher the codes.

John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador and a senior cruise director, said he frequently fields dress code questions on his popular Facebook page.

“There are still a few people who are afraid of what other people will think,” Heald says. “And a few who are concerned about what other people are wearing."

In July, he joked that he was going through withdrawal symptoms because he had not been posed a single question on the topic so far that day. That post prompted more than 400 comments, some sharp words and at least one response from a woman that included a reposting of Carnival’s official “elegant”-night dress code.

I can care less what you have on, you could at least just follow the rules why is this so hard." — Facebook commenter, lamenting the lack of observance of Carnival's dress codes

“Some of you need to read it since some of you think that jeans and flip flops are appropriate in the main dining room on ‘elegant’ night,” the commenter wrote. “I can care less what you have on, you could at least just follow the rules why is this so hard.”

Heald says his advice is always: “If you’re comfortable, you should not worry about what other people think, because 99 percent will look at you and say, ‘I hope you’re having a great time.'”

The subject can be especially intimidating for those who haven’t cruised before. Emma Le Teace, 25, who runs the website Cruising Isn’t Just for Old People , said her most popular articles tend to revolve around dress codes.

“I think a lot of people are really afraid of the dress code, and they really shouldn’t be,” she says.

Le Teace said some of her fellow millennial cruisers actually enjoy the chance to dress up — as long as it’s not mandatory.

“Some people wear their prom dress again; when are you going to get the chance to do that?” she says. “Some people really love it. I think it’s about choice.”

We cruise exclusively on Viking River and Viking Ocean. We always dress “elegant casual” at night. We never travel with formal wear and Viking have NO formal evenings. I don’t agree with less than elegant casual in the MDR. — Ken Graham (@KGrahamToronto) September 18, 2019

Cusack says he, too, has seen younger cruisers embracing the opportunity to dress up.

“Especially among people that are hardcore fans of the movie ‘Titanic,’ they want that whole experience,” he says. (Well, most of the experience.) But for some, navigating the nuances is still a challenge.

When Kate and Josh Fox-Fuller took their first cruise this summer, a Mediterranean voyage for their honeymoon, they discovered the Royal Caribbean ship would have two formal nights rather than the one they prepared for. On the first night, Kate Fox-Fuller said they kept getting notifications to dress up. So she put on her “cocktail-slash-sundress” and her husband donned his “business casual” outfit and they headed to the buffet, where they had eaten all their meals. There, surrounded by casually dressed families, they realized the dress code was only for the more formal dining room.

Despite her effort, when Fox-Fuller was in the restroom, she said an older woman wearing a mother-of-the-bride-type gown commented on her outfit.

“She was like, ‘Did you know it was formal night?’” Fox-Fuller said. “I was like, ‘I’m wearing a sundress, it’s fine.’ It was very intense."

On the second formal night, she said, the couple took a different approach: “We just didn’t leave our room.”

The demise of formal nights on cruises: Dress codes divide passengers

What to Wear on Cruise Formal Night & Frequently Asked Questions

Sharing is caring!

Wondering what to wear on a cruise formal night? One of the most fun, but surprisingly stressful parts of planning a cruise, is planning your formal wear attire.

You might be wondering what to expect on cruise formal nights, how many there are, and even if you can skip them if you like.

In this post, I’ll answer some questions you may have about formal nights on a cruise and how they work. Plus, I’ll share some  recommendations for cruise formal wear to make it easy.

What is Formal Night on a Cruise?

cruise formal night what to wear

Formal night is a special evening during the cruise when cruise passengers dress up in fancy or formal attire. However it doesn’t stop there. There is usually a special meal served in the Main Dining Room, where guests might be treated to a choice of menu which includes loster tail or prime rib, or a “surf and turf”. This is often a passenger favorite!

Formal night is sometimes referred to as Captain’s Night, and the Cruise Ship Captain will often make a speech welcoming all guests to his ship. The Captain will often be available for a photo opportunity with one of the cruise ship’s professional photographers.

In addition, there may be other formal night traditions to enjoy. For example, Princess Cruises have a champagne waterfall, where guests can participate and have a photo as well. If there are “welcome back” parties for past passengers, they often occur on formal night as well.

Formal Night Photos

Cruise ship formal nights are a great time to get professional photos taken. Whether you’re cruising as a couple for an anniversary or special occasion, or cruising as a family , there is no better time to capture the memories.

Truthfully, some way wonder if buying photos or a photo package on a cruise ship is worth it. However, at about $25 for an 8 x 10 photo or about $200 for a larger photo package, I think it’s a splurge that may be worth it on a cruise . Professional photo shoots in most cities will cost more than this, and will be much less convenient.

What’s considered formal wear on a cruise?

On most cruise lines, a tuxedo or suit for men, and an evening gown or cocktail dress for ladies is appropriate formal wear for a cruise. In practice, there will be a wide variety of “formal wear” seen on a cruise. Simply put, some people dress up more, and some less.

Men can feel comfortable wearing a suit or dress pants and a dress shirt. Ladies can wear a nice dress or nice pant suit. Shorts and other casual wear are best left to the buffet or to other more casual restaurant choices.

How formal are cruise formal nights?

Years ago, formal nights on cruises were very formal. It was common for men to be dressed in tuxedos and ladies in long evening gowns. Nowadays, you’ll see a wide variety of dress on formal nights.

If you want to get a feeling for how formal is formal on a cruise, simply think about what clothing you’ll see at a wedding. On most cruise lines, dressing in formal attire will mean cocktail dresses or elegant pant suits for ladies, and a dark suit or dress pants and sports coat for men.

Remember to check your cruise line dress codes. Cunard is one of the most formal and you’ll want to be prepared with proper formal attire. Norwegian Cruise Line does not have a formal dress code, however do have optional dress up nights.

However, on most cruise ships, ladies can also feel comfortable to wear a nice dress (like a Little Black Dress) and men a pair on black dress pants and a dress shirt, with or without tie.

Can you skip formal night?

Can you skip formal nights? Of course you can. If you’re not feeling like dressing up or you’ve had a long day and you’re a bit tired, you have alternatives to formal night for evening dinner.

If you want to skip formal night on your cruise, you can always eat in the buffet or one of the other casual restaurants. You might even want to order room service and have dinner on your private balcony .

As well, many cruise lines don’t extend the formal dress code to specialty dining restaurants on “formal night”. If you prefer to be served but would rather dress in smart casual wear, consider making reservations at one of your cruise ship’s specialty restaurants.

Do all cruise lines have formal nights?

Most popular cruise lines have a formal night, or a version of it by a different name, during each cruise. In recent years, cruises are becoming more casual and dress codes are changing , however, having a special “dress up” night is still very common.

Some cruise line’s formal nights may be called Gala Nights , which are usually quite formal. Other cruise dress codes include Celebrity’s “Evening Chic” and Carnival’s “Cruise Elegant”, which leave more leeway for dressing up with less formality. Norwegian Cruise Line does not have a formal night, however they do have an optional dress up night called “Norwegian Night Out”.

Since cruise lines can really differ on what type of attire is expected on formal nights, it’s important to check your cruise line’s dress codes to make sure you pack the appropriate cruise wear.

How many formal nights are there on a cruise?

Most cruise lines have 1 formal night on cruises that are 6 days and less, and 2 formal nights on cruises 7 days and more.

In short, if you’re sailing on a 3, 4 or 5 night cruise, there will be one formal or dress up night. Typical 7 night cruises will have 2 formal nights.

Some cruise lines, including Holland America and Princess Cruises, will have 3 formal nights on cruises that are 14 days and longer.

Here Are the Suggested Dress Codes for Each Major Cruise Line

Carnival Royal Caribbean Dress Codes

Most cruise lines require resort or elegant casual attire at dinner most nights. Photo: Shutterstock.com

The vast majority of cruise lines maintain a casual dress code during the day, but once the evening hours roll in, dress codes can change dramatically. What was okay in a main restaurant at lunch may not be okay for dinner.

To help you prepare your clients for their next cruise, we’ve compiled the dress codes for the main ocean-going cruise lines. Recommended attire is for dinners in the main and specialty restaurants. (Buffets tend to remain casual even after the sun goes down.)

Azamara Overall: Resort casual. Formal evening wear is not expected or required, though guests are free to dress formally if they’d like.

Recommended for Women: Sportswear, casual dresses, skirts, pants and capris, blouses and knit tops.

Recommended for Men: Sportswear, collared golf and polo shirts, shorts, pants, a sport coat (if desired, not required).

Not Permitted: Bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps, bathing suits, shorts and torn/distressed jeans are not allowed in the dining room or specialty restaurants.

When dining at Windows Café, guests must wear footwear and a cover-up or shirt.

Atlas Ocean Voyages Overall: Resort casual.

Recommended for Women: Sportswear, casual dresses, skirts, pants and capris, blouses and other nice tops.

The dress code at Fahrenheit 555, specifically, is cruise elegant, with smart jeans allowed on Cruise Casual evenings.

Recommended for Women: Casual dresses, casual skirts or pants and blouses, summer dresses, capris or dress shorts, and jeans. On Cruise Elegant Nights, recommended attire for women is cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirt and blouses, and evening gowns.

Recommended for Men: Casual pants, jeans, dress shorts, and collared sport shirts. On Cruise Elegant Nights, recommended attire for men is dress trousers, dress shirts, sports jacket, and suit/tie or tuxedo for those that want to go all out.

Not Permitted: Gym or basketball shorts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, baseball caps. On Cruise Elegant Nights, shorts, t-shirts, jeans and sportswear are furthermore not permitted.

All items worn during a Carnival cruise should not contain any messages that may be considered offensive or contain nudity, profanity, or sexual innuendo/suggestions. All clothing and accessories should not promote negative ethnic or racial commentary, or hatred or violence in any form.

Celebrity Cruises Overall: Smart casual.

Celebrity expedition sailings in the Galapagos feature casual attire for the entire cruise.

Recommended for Women: Skirt, pants or jeans with a casual top. On Evening Chic night, cocktail dress, or skirt, pants or designer jeans with an elegant top.

Recommended for Men: Pants or jeans with a short sleeve sport shirt. On Evening Chic night, pants or designer jeans with a dress shirt, button-down shirt of sweater, optional sport coat or blazer.

Recommended for Men: Shorts, t-shirts, jeans, trousers, polo shirts. On optional dress-up nights, trousers with polo or button-up shirt and jacket.

What to Wear on Formal Night on a Cruise

Have you booked a cruise that has a formal night or two? Formal night on a cruise can be a highlight of your vacation! But if you don’t know what to wear on formal night, no worries—here’s everything you need to know.

Read on to find out all about cruise formal night—from how to find out how many nights will be formal, what the formal night dress codes are for the major cruise lines, and what to do if the idea of dressing up on a cruise just isn’t your thing.

I’ve even put together some cruise formal night outfit ideas for men, women, and kids to inspire you!

Be sure to read my cruise formal night FAQ at the end for quick answers to the most frequently asked questions about formal night on a cruise.

What is formal night on a cruise?

Formal night on a cruise ship is the evening when passengers don dressy clothing for dinner, photos, and special activities. The main dining rooms usually will serve an elevated menu, with fancier options like filet mignon, prime rib, or lobster tail.

Some cruise lines have the Captain’s welcome party the evening of the first formal night, with the opportunity to meet the captain and mingle with the other guests.

less formal cruises

Your cruise line might use an alternate name for formal night, like “Evening Chic”, “Gala Evening”, or “Cruise Elegant”, but it’s essentially the same thing—a night when most passengers dress in their finest clothing for dinner and evening festivities.

Why do cruise lines have formal nights?

During the golden age of ocean liners, guests staying in first class cabins were required to wear formal attire after 6 PM in all public areas of the ship. In the early decades of modern cruise travel, women wore evening gowns and men donned white tie in the evenings.

Learn more: The Story of the First Cruise Ship: SS Prinzessin Victoria Luise

In the 1960s, when standards of dress became less formal in general, cruise lines began to alter their dress codes to appeal to a more modern aesthetic—as well as to the less well-heeled guests who were now able to afford a cruise vacation.

Today, many passengers enjoy having the opportunity to dress up once or twice during a cruise. In an increasingly casual world, this tradition is unique to the cruise industry!

Do all cruise lines have formal night?

If you really don’t like dressing up, you might want to choose one of the cruise lines that doesn’t have formal nights. These cruise lines don’t have a specific formal night with dressy attire required in the main dining rooms:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Virgin Voyages
  • Oceania Cruises
  • Paul Gauguin Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas

However, most of these cruise lines do have “formal optional” evenings, when many passengers do dress up in the evening—but it’s not required.

What should you wear for formal night on a cruise?

When people ask me what to wear for formal night on a cruise, I usually advise them to dress like they would for an elegant evening wedding—a dark suit and tie for men, and a cocktail dress or dressy evening separates for women.

You’ll often see people dressed to both ends of the “formal” spectrum on many ships—some wear tuxedos and full-length gowns, and others will wear chinos and a dress shirt or a more casual dress.

On more traditional cruise lines like Holland America or Cunard, you’ll notice the general level of dressiness to be a bit higher. But as long as you’re within your cruise line’s dress code, feel free to be as dressy or as casual as you prefer.

Where to find the formal night dress code for your cruise line

The idea of “formal night” may conjure up different images to different people, so the cruise lines have come up with guidelines to help cruisers understand the dress code expectations before they pack for vacation.

Here are links to the formal night dress codes for many of the major cruise lines:

  • Carnival Cruise Line – look for “Cruise Elegant”
  • Celebrity Cruises – look for “Evening Chic”
  • Costa Cruises – look for “Formal”
  • Cunard Line – look for “Gala Evening”
  • Disney Cruise Line – look for “formal” and “semi-formal”
  • Holland America Line – look for “Formal”
  • MSC Cruises – click on “Gala Evenings”
  • Princess Cruises – click on Clothing Recommendations and look for “Formal”
  • Royal Caribbean – look for “Formal nights”

Where is formal night attire required on the ship?

If you’re opting out of formal night attire, you don’t need to stay in your stateroom all night! Formal night dress code is generally only required in the main dining room during dinner. (Some cruise lines also require formal attire in specialty restaurants on formal nights).

The buffet’s dress code will always be more casual, and of course no one expects you to lounge on the Lido deck in your suit or cocktail dress!

However, in the central area of the ship, especially after 5 or 6 PM, you’ll see most people dressed up for pre-dinner photos or cocktails. If I’m skipping formal night (or I’m having a late dinner and haven’t changed yet), I tend to avoid the atrium or the busiest part of the ship. You can feel a bit out of place in a t-shirt and shorts when everyone else has changed into their nighttime best!

Renting formal wear for your cruise

If you’d prefer to rent formal wear for your cruise, some cruise lines do offer tuxedo rentals. You’ll usually need to book this through the cruise line at least a couple of weeks before you sail.

Links and phone numbers for cruise line tux rentals:

  • Carnival: Call the Fun Shops at 1-800-522-7648
  • Cunard (tuxedo rental on board, no need to pre-order. Type “tuxedo” in FAQ search bar to see pricing)

Some cruise lines, including Disney and HAL, traditionally partnered with a company called Cruiseline Formalwear. Unfortunately, this company closed permanently during the pandemic. Instead, many cruisers have been renting tuxedos from local formal wear shops and carrying them on board.

For cocktail dress or gown rentals, you can check sites like Rent the Runway or Armoire (they’re especially great for maternity formal wear rentals). You’ll be able to rent a formal dress for far less than buying, and they take care of the cleaning for you.

How many formal nights will there be on my cruise?

When you’re deciding what to wear for formal night on a cruise, it’s a good idea to know how many formal nights your sailing will have.

In general, cruise lines that have formal nights will have two each week on a seven-day cruise. On short cruises (less than five days), there often isn’t a formal night.

Check with the cruise line or your travel agent to see how many formal nights are planned for your particular voyage.

Having photos taken on formal night

Once you’re all dressed up for the evening, why not plan to have some formal portraits taken to commemorate your cruise?

On most mainstream cruise lines, the roving photographers are ready to snap your pic in locations around the ship. But during formal night evenings, the photo team is out in full force!

They’ll often set up in the atrium or main public area with professional lighting and backdrops to capture your family or group in your formal night best.

Unlike a photoshoot on land, you won’t need to pay to have your pictures taken (although some cruise lines do have a portrait studio where you can book a photo session for a fee). You’ll only pay for the photos that you like, and prices are reasonable for formal shots.

A single 8″x10″ will run you about $25, and you’ll be able to purchase a discounted photo package if you want several prints to take home.

How to keep your cruise formal wear from wrinkling

Many cruisers worry about their dressy clothes for formal night wrinkling from being stuffed in a suitcase while traveling to the cruise port. You do have some options that will keep your formal wear looking good when you’re ready for that special night!

Although you can’t pack your own clothes iron or steamer (they’re a fire hazard on ships), some cruise lines do have passenger laundry rooms with an iron you can use to touch up your outfits.

But if your formal wear is too delicate for an iron, I have a few tricks you can use to get the wrinkles out:

  • Use wrinkle release spray and hang to dry
  • Use a home dry clean kit in the laundry room dryer
  • Hang your outfits in the bathroom with a hot shower running for a few minutes

Can you skip formal night on a cruise?

If dressing up just isn’t your thing, you can absolutely skip formal night on a cruise! The main dining room will have a formal dress code, but you can always have dinner at the buffet or order room service.

Many cruise lines have a “smart casual” dress code in their specialty restaurants, making them a popular choice on formal nights for those who want to avoid dressing up. But double-check dress codes—some cruise lines (Carnival for example) have the same dress code in their specialty restaurants as in the MDR on formal nights.

Cruise formal night FAQ

Do you have to dress up for formal night on a cruise?

As long as you don’t have dinner in the main dining room or a specialty restaurant with a formal night dress code, you don’t need to dress up for formal night. Instead, you can eat at the buffet, a quick-service restaurant, or order room service.

Do men have to wear a jacket and tie for cruise formal night?

Some cruise lines do require a jacket and tie to enter the main dining room on formal night. Check your cruise line’s  formal night dress code  for details.

Do women have to wear a dress for cruise formal night?

Cruise lines that have formal nights don’t specify that women need to wear a dress on those evenings. Dressy evening separates, like an elegant top paired with a matching skirt or trousers are fine for formal night.

Do kids need to dress up for formal night on a cruise?

If your cruise line has formal nights, kids who are eating in the main dining room with their parents will need to adhere to the formal night dress code.

Which cruise lines don’t have formal nights?

Several cruise lines don’t have formal nights, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Azamara, Oceania Cruises, Paul Gauguin Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas. However, there may be an optional dress-up night on your sailing.

Can you buy or rent formal wear on the cruise ship?

Many cruise lines offer tuxedo rentals, but you should reserve your tux at least several weeks before you sail.

I’d love to hear your opinions about what to wear for formal night on a cruise! Do you go all out, do the minimum, or skip it altogether? Let me know in the comments below!

What to wear on a cruise: Cruise attire and cruise line dress codes

Ashley Kosciolek

Have you ever had that nightmare where you're at work, in school or giving an important presentation, and you look down to discover you're wearing only your underwear (or worse, nothing at all)? If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing — and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared.

Packing acceptable attire for a cruise is simple if you remember a few general rules. Here, I'll break down some safe options if you're unsure, and I'll give an overview of the cruise dress codes for each of the "big eight" cruise lines.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

What do people wear on a cruise?

less formal cruises

You can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing for sea days when you'll remain on board your ship. Although some lines will be more or less casual than that, it's a good baseline. But what is "resort casual"?

Khaki pants or shorts with loose-fitting, short-sleeve, button-down shirts or even nice, plain T-shirts work well for men. Women might opt for khaki shorts or palazzo pants with a nice top or a sundress. In most cases, nice jeans (dark wash with no holes) will work well also.

On most ships, this clothing will also be acceptable at night in the main dining rooms. For extra-fee restaurants, you might choose to dress up a bit more -- perhaps collared shirts or long-sleeve button-downs for men and slacks with a blouse, or a dress, for women.

For formal nights, men will want to bring a collared, button-down shirt at the bare minimum. For something a little more snazzy, bring a jacket to wear over your shirt, with or without a tie. Some men opt for suits or tuxes. For women, pantsuits and dressy pants outfits are a great choice, as are party dresses or even ball gowns.

Jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights, and cut-off shorts, baseball caps and flip-flops are banned at all times during dinner in the main dining rooms.

Related: 7 cruise ship packing mistakes you want to avoid at all costs

Another key piece of clothing to bring is a bathing suit. Whether you're headed to a warm-weather destination and plan to laze by the pool or on the beach, or you're visiting somewhere chilly but want to take advantage of your vessel's hot tubs, it's an item you won't want to forget. Note that cover-ups are required for entry at all restaurants and dining rooms, with the exception of walk-up, poolside window-service venues.

For shore excursions — particularly those in more rugged or active destinations that require a lot of walking — comfortable, casual clothing and sturdy footwear are a must. Bring layers for cold climates and moisture-wicking fabrics for places where it's warm or where you expect to work up a sweat.

Finally, check to see if your cruise line has any special theme nights planned. If so, you might want to pack an outfit for the white party or '80s night.

Carnival cruise dress code

less formal cruises

Carnival is one line where casual is the name of the game. Passengers will be just fine in jeans, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and bathing suits for their days on board or ashore.

At night, nice jeans and nice tops are perfect for eating in the main dining rooms.

On Carnival cruise formal nights, known as "cruise elegant" nights, cruisers wear everything from slacks with nice shirts to tuxes and ball gowns. However, most passengers stick to clothes that fall somewhere in the middle.

Voyages of six nights or longer will have two "cruise elegant" nights, while those five nights or shorter will see only one.

Celebrity Cruises dress code

Celebrity Cruises maintains a dress code that's best described as chic-casual. The demographic on board tends to be a bit more upscale than what you'll find on Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. That means khaki shorts with nice button-downs are more common than jean shorts and tank tops, although you won't be out of place in the latter.

For dinner, you'll want to dress it up even more, as the line has a smart-casual dress code at night in most restaurants, including the main dining room. Anything from unripped jeans to dress pants with nice blouses or button-downs is acceptable.

Related: 10 unexpected items I won't cruise without

Are there formal nights on Celebrity cruises? Yes, there's one on every sailing of six nights or fewer and two on voyages of a week or more, but they have a different name. "Evening chic" nights encourage passengers to go all out with tuxes and evening gowns. However, most men choose slacks with collared or button-down shirts and jackets, sans ties. Most women choose slacks and nice blouses, sundresses or party dresses.

Disney Cruise Line dress code

less formal cruises

Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with children, and children like to be comfortable. With that in mind, just about anything goes in terms of dress on The Mouse's ships, which tend toward casual in spite of their stellar service and high price point.

It's not uncommon to see jeans, shorts, T-shirts or bathing suits during the day. Unlike most other lines, the same goes at dinnertime, with jeans and T-shirts just as common as dressier attire like slacks and button-downs.

Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages. For those, DCL suggests that men avoid jeans and wear jackets. Women should go with dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits.

Related: The 5 best cruise lines for families

Some of Disney Cruise Line's added-fee restaurants, such as Remy — one of the most expensive alternative eateries at sea — require jackets for men and don't allow jeans.

Each Disney sailing features a Pirate Night; cruisers wishing to participate should pack their best swashbuckling gear. As is standard at Disney parks, you're also likely to see large numbers of costumes and mouse ears at all hours of the day.

Holland America Line dress code

Although the dress code on Holland America Line ships is technically "cruise casual," you'll rarely spot anyone looking disheveled or like they just rolled out of bed. Most passengers tend toward resort wear or, at the bare minimum, nice jeans with pressed T-shirts.

The casual dress code carries through to dinner, but HAL cruisers can often be found dressing up a bit more — collared shirts or button-downs (sometimes with jackets) and slacks for men and slacks with nice tops or dresses for women.

As for Holland America formal nights, on sailings shorter than a week, there will be one "gala night," where travelers don evening or ball gowns, suits or tuxedos. Voyages of eight to 13 nights will see two gala nights, while any cruises of two weeks or longer will have three chances to dress to the nines.

MSC Cruises dress code

less formal cruises

What to wear on MSC cruises largely depends on the crowd with whom you're sailing. On Europe cruises, your fellow passengers are likely to dress up more often — even during the day — with skimpy resort wear and designer bathing suits gracing the pool deck as far as the eye can see. On those voyages, dinner is an even more fancy affair, with elegance as the norm. Expect to see glittering dresses and stylish pants and button-downs with dress shoes, even when it's not formal night.

On cruises that depart from the U.S., expect a more casual vibe, with jeans, T-shirts and bathing suits ruling the day. At night, you'll be fine with nice jeans and a collared shirt or a sundress, although you might want to dress up a bit more to match the ship's ambiance.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Are there formal nights on MSC cruises? Absolutely. They're called "gala dinners," and they appear at least once per voyage, but the number can vary by itinerary. The dress code is strict, with the buffet the only place that will allow T-shirts and shorts. You'll fit in best in a ball gown, cocktail dress, suit or tuxedo.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

Norwegian prides itself on allowing cruisers to dress as they please, providing a "come as you are" atmosphere during the day and at night. The most popular clothing is cruise casual, and passengers are free to wear whatever they'd like with an emphasis on comfort.

The only exception is at dinner, when a smart casual vibe encourages travelers to avoid torn clothes or outfits that are suggestive or skimpy.

In a nod to Norwegian's laid-back style, NCL formal nights — dubbed "Dress Up or Not" nights — provide a chance for you to doll up. However, it's not required, and you won't be turned away from the main dining rooms if you choose not to participate. Passengers have been spotted wearing everything from jeans and T-shirts to ball gowns and tuxes, and all coexist in perfect harmony.

Princess Cruises dress code

less formal cruises

Princess ' casual daytime mindset means you can wear the same types of clothing on board as you would during a day ashore — activewear, beachwear and jeans or T-shirts are totally fine.

Princess cruise formal nights are special because the line is one of the few industry holdouts in that it still has an official formal night. Its passengers enjoy a more traditional cruise experience, and they relish the romantic vibe that a formal night can provide. With that in mind, the line doesn't mention super-fancy garb like ball gowns or tuxes; instead, it advises suits or slacks with jackets for men and cocktail dresses or pantsuits for the ladies.

On voyages of less than a week, passengers should plan for one formal night, while sailings of a week to 13 days will have two, and cruises two weeks or longer will have three.

All other nights are listed as "smart casual," which means sundresses or pants with flowy tops for women and nice jeans or slacks with collared shirts for men will suffice.

Royal Caribbean dress code

As is the case with Carnival and Norwegian, Royal Caribbean is a casual line during the day. And, like Disney Cruise Line, it caters to a lot of families. Translation: Wear what allows you to have the most fun in the most comfort. Expect to see shorts or jeans with T-shirts or tank tops and bathing suits or beachwear almost exclusively during the daytime.

At night, you might want to put on something a little less comfortable, but it's certainly not required, unless it's a formal night. (Like Princess, Royal still has those.) What is confusing is that the line has three different dress codes, all of which are loosely enforced: casual, smart casual and formal. The ones that show up on your voyage will depend on the length of the cruise.

The only difference between the first two is that smart casual recommends pantsuits for ladies and jackets for the guys, but skirts or trousers with blouses or collared shirts are fine in both cases. Smart casual also strongly discourages jeans -- even nice ones.

Royal Caribbean formal nights have the highest expectations for passengers, urging them to put on their finest cocktail dresses, evening gowns, suits or tuxes. As with the line's smart casual dress code, jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights.

Dressing Right for Cruise Formal Nights: From Casual to Chic

by Judith Eve | Mar 4, 2024 | Cruise Planning & Cruiser Lifestyle

less formal cruises

Deciding what to wear on cruise formal nights can be as thrilling as it is daunting. It's that special evening where the ship's atmosphere turns a notch fancier, and everyone gets a chance to strut their best outfits. But with so many options, how does one choose the perfect ensemble?

Fear not! Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sea traveler, there's a way to navigate through the sea of formal wear without feeling lost. From elegant gowns to sharp tuxedos, understanding the unwritten rules of cruise attire will ensure you're decked out appropriately, blending in with the glamorous vibe of the night.

Understanding Cruise Formal Night Expectations

Cruise formal nights are a time-honored tradition, transforming the ship into a parade of elegance and style. For newcomers, understanding what to wear can feel like navigating uncharted waters. However, cruise lines often provide guests with guidelines that demystify dress codes, making it easier for everyone to blend in seamlessly with the sophisticated atmosphere.

At the core of it, formal nights on a cruise ship are not about strict rules but celebrating special occasions in style. Women typically shine in cocktail dresses, evening gowns, or sophisticated pant suits, while men don refined options like tuxedos, suits, or smart blazers with trousers. The key is to aim for attire that's a notch above the usual day wear, aligning with the ship's transformed ambiance.

Dress Code Variability

It's vital to note that dress codes can vary significantly between different cruise lines and even among ships within the same fleet. Luxury cruises might lean towards a more traditional definition of formal wear, expecting tuxedos and gowns as standard attire. In contrast, mainstream cruises could offer a more relaxed interpretation, where a nice dress or a shirt and trousers would suffice.

Understanding these nuances ensures that passengers can prepare appropriately without the fear of feeling underdressed or out of place. Pre-cruise communication from the cruise line, such as emails and brochures, often highlights these expectations, making it easier for guests to pack the perfect outfits.

Choosing the right attire for cruise formal nights adds an extra layer of excitement to the anticipation of the trip. With a clear grasp of what's expected, cruisers can focus on enjoying the elegant evenings, creating memorable moments without the worry of fashion faux pas.

Women's Attire Options for Cruise Formal Nights

less formal cruises

When it comes to cruise formal nights, women have a plethora of attire options to choose from. The essence of dressing up for these occasions is about blending elegance with comfort, ensuring that the attire not only looks sophisticated but also feels great to wear throughout the evening's events.

Cocktail Dresses and Evening Gowns

For most women, cocktail dresses and evening gowns are the go-to choices. Cocktail dresses are perfect for those who prefer something a little less formal but still want to adhere to the night's elegant theme. Typically, these dresses are knee-length or midi, offering a balance between formal and semi-formal.

On the other hand, evening gowns are ideal for making a statement. With longer hemlines that sweep the floor, these dresses come in various styles—from A-line to mermaid shapes—allowing for personal expression. The flexibility in choosing fabrics, such as silk or chiffon, adds an extra layer of sophistication.

Pantsuits and Jumpsuits

For those seeking an alternative to dresses, pantsuits and jumpsuits offer a chic and modern option. These pieces provide both style and comfort, making them a popular choice among women who prefer not to wear dresses. Tailored pantsuits in luxurious fabrics can elevate the look to fit the formal night's ambiance, while jumpsuits provide a unique silhouette that stands out in a sea of gowns.

Accessorizing

No outfit is complete without the right accessories. Statement jewelry , from pearl necklaces to diamond earrings, can accentuate the overall look, while elegant clutches serve as both a fashion statement and a practical item for carrying essentials. Choosing the right heels that offer comfort and style is crucial, as they can enhance the outfit's elegance while ensuring that the night can be enjoyed to the fullest.

By exploring these options, women can find the perfect attire that not only meets the cruise line's formal night expectations but also expresses their personal style. With the right outfit, they're set to enjoy an evening of sophistication and celebration on the high seas.

Men's Attire Options for Cruise Formal Nights

less formal cruises

When it comes to men's attire for cruise formal nights, the range of options allows for both traditional elegance and a touch of personal style. A key consideration is the cruising line's specific dress code, which can vary from relatively relaxed to strictly formal.

Tuxedos and Suits are the cornerstones of men's formalwear on these occasions. Opting for a classic black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt and a bow tie can never go wrong and exudes a timeless charm. Alternatively, a well-fitted dark suit paired with a smart dress shirt and a conservative tie offers a slightly less formal but equally respectable choice.

For those looking to inject a bit of their personality into their formal night ensemble, consider exploring:

  • Vest and Tie Combinations : Experimenting with different colors and patterns can add an individual touch while maintaining a polished look.
  • Shoes : While black dress shoes are a safe bet, switching to patent leather or polished loafers can elevate the overall aesthetic.

Accessories play a substantial role in completing the formal attire. Cufflinks, a pocket square, and a wristwatch are not just functional but also serve as tasteful embellishments that reflect attention to detail.

In terms of materials and colors, dark shades dominate formal evening wear. However, navy or dark grey suits can offer a subtle departure from the traditional black without detracting from the formality. Selecting high-quality fabrics such as wool, silk, or a blend can greatly enhance comfort, crucial for enjoying the night’s festivities to the fullest.

Lastly, the climate and location of the cruise should not be overlooked. For itineraries in warmer climates, opting for lighter materials and considering a breathable dress shirt can ensure comfort without compromising on style.

Accessorizing Tips to Elevate Your Formal Night Look

less formal cruises

Accessorizing for a formal night on a cruise is like adding the cherry on top of a delicious sundae. It's not just about the suit or dress; it's about the details that make an outfit truly shine. For men, selecting the right accessories can transform their look from simply nice to unequivocally elegant.

First and foremost, wristwatches are a must. A sleek, classic watch can serve as a statement piece, revealing a lot about personal style. Whether it's a vintage heirloom or a modern minimalist design, a watch adds a level of sophistication that few other accessories can.

Cufflinks also play a crucial role in a man's formal wear. They might be small, but their impact on an outfit's overall appeal is substantial. Opting for cufflinks that complement the shirt and suit color can tie the whole look together. For a more personalized touch, custom cufflinks or those that reflect personal hobbies or interests can serve as great conversation starters.

Don't forget about pocket squares . These little pieces of fabric can inject a pop of color or pattern to a suit, allowing for a bit of personal flair even in the most formal settings. The key is to ensure the pocket square complements the tie or shirt rather than matching it exactly, to avoid a look that's too coordinated.

Shoes, while not exactly an accessory, are also critical. Polished leather shoes are the gold standard for men's formal wear. The style—be it oxfords, derbies, or loafers—should match the level of formality of the event. Remember: the darker the shoe, the more formal it is.

By paying attention to these accessory tips, anyone can elevate their formal night look on a cruise. It's all about balancing tradition with personal style to create an ensemble that feels both appropriate and uniquely theirs.

Navigating Dress Codes for Different Cruise Lines

When embarking on a cruise, it's crucial to understand that dress codes can significantly vary from one line to another. This diversity not only caters to a broad audience but also dictates the formality of attire appropriate for evening events. For those looking to blend in and respect the onboard culture, paying close attention to these guidelines ensures a seamless experience.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean , for instance, opt for a more relaxed atmosphere during their formal nights. They suggest cocktail dresses for women and dress shirts with slacks for men. This approach encourages comfort while still maintaining a touch of elegance. Conversely, lines like Cunard and Holland America lean towards a traditional, more formal dress code. Here, evening gowns and tuxedos or dark suits are the norms, reflecting their penchant for classic cruise elegance.

For those who wish to dive deeper or have specific attire in mind, consulting the cruise line's website or reaching out to customer service prior to departure can provide clarity. Remember, while adhering to the dress code is part of the experience, cruise lines often accommodate guests who prefer not to participate in formal nights, offering alternative dining options where the dress code is more relaxed.

Mastering the art of dressing for a cruise's formal nights doesn't just add to the overall enjoyment; it also offers an opportunity to experiment with personal style within the framework set by the cruise line. Whether it’s embracing the casual elegance suggested by Carnival and Royal Caribbean or the timeless sophistication of Cunard and Holland America, there's room for every traveler to express themselves while respecting the established norms.

12 Affordable Dresses Perfect for a Cruise Formal Night

There might not be a single event on a cruise that can cause as much stress as formal night.

And all that stress comes from one simple question: What can I wear?

To be fair, it can be a tough question to answer. Over the years, formal night has decidedly become more casual. While it used to be just for formal evening gowns and tuxedos, these days almost anything except for shorts (and sometimes even those) will pass the dress code.

That said, we think you definitely should dress up for formal night. The night isn’t just about you — it’s for everyone headed to dinner in the ship’s dining room. Not everyone gets a special occasion to dress up. Being able to get dolled up and head to dinner with other glamorous-looking folks helps to set the atmosphere.

To learn more about what sort of dress is and isn’t allowed during formal night you can read our article here.

In the meantime, we’ve rounded up a dozen formal dresses — all of which would be perfect for cruise formal night. You can find all of these dresses on Amazon, which typically offers free returns/exchanges if something doesn’t fit just right.

What should I wear at sea? Here's what to know about cruise line dress codes

less formal cruises

When I was getting ready to take a cruise in October, there were a handful of items I made sure to pack: my passport, anti-nausea medicine, and a blazer and tie.

The cruise line, Holland America Line, had advised me that during the transatlantic voyage from the Netherlands to New York there would be some occasions to dress up. But after lint-rolling my jacket and multiple attempts at a half-Windsor knot, I left my stateroom and realized I may not have needed them.

While plenty of guests were decked out in jackets, dresses and slacks, others were in sartorial vacation mode, dressed in varying degrees of (in)formality.

Can travelers still find cruise deals?  Yes ... for now

Happiest place in the Caribbean?  Disney Cruise Line to open Lighthouse Point island destination

First-time cruisers may not realize that ships have some guidelines for clothing, from formal nights to events that call for unique attire, but those rules and recommendations have evolved over time.

"It really has gotten more and more relaxed as we've gone along, especially after the pandemic," said Valerie Dorsey, a franchise owner and travel adviser at Cruise Planners.

Here's what travelers should know about what to pack and wear on their next sailing.

Do cruise lines have dress codes?

Though travelers may associate cruising with formal nights – when lines encourage passengers to dress up for dinner in certain venues, stemming from grand tradition – the onboard experience has grown more easygoing, Dorsey said.

Dorsey said she noticed a shift from true formal wear to "smart casual" or "smart elegant" clothing around 2015 and began hearing more from clients about how other travelers weren't dressing up as much, a change that has irked some guests .

Passengers have gotten more casual on regular nights, too.

That shift has only been exacerbated in the wake of COVID-19 as more travelers work from home, according to Dorsey, though some lines take formal nights more seriously and some passengers choose to go all out, regardless.

"I've seen people dress way up, meaning tuxedos, evening gowns, beautiful clothing, down to 'I'm just going to dinner at Red Lobster tonight,' " she said. "I think it's all over the place."

Enforcement of the dress codes has eased, as well.

Story continues below.

"It used to be if you walked in in a pair of shorts, they would say, 'I'm sorry, you can't enter the dining room,' and they don't even stop people anymore," Dorsey said. "So that's why it's really hard to get a handle on how you're supposed to dress."

If you want to opt out of dressing up altogether, there are parts of the ship that usually remain more casual, even on dressy or formal nights. Travelers can always head to the buffet or other casual eateries, Dorsey said, though on smaller lines more passengers may be dressed up more across the board.

Cruise lines each have their own dress codes, but we've rounded up some of the major lines' policies:

Carnival Cruise Line dress code

Passengers can wear casual clothes during the day, but the line requires smart casual clothing after 5:30 p.m. in its public lounges and restaurants or as stated in the ship's newsletter, spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an email.

The line's Cruise Casual dress code calls for collared sport shirts, casual pants or jeans – but no cut-offs – and long dress shorts for men. Women can wear items including casual dresses, blouses and skirts or pants, dress shorts and jeans.

In accordance with the dress code, passengers cannot wear regular shorts or gym shorts, bathing suit attire, beach flip-flops and other similar items in the dining room.

When the Cruise Elegant Dress Code is in effect, men can wear dress trousers and shirts, and the line recommends a sport jacket.

Fun stays: Stay in a former helicopter hangar on this Silversea expedition ship

For women, the line calls for cocktail dresses, "elegant skirts and blouses," pantsuits or even evening gowns. Items like T-shirts, jeans, shorts and gym shorts and bathing suit attire are similarly barred from the dining room.

The length of the cruise determines the number of Cruise Elegant evenings, according to Carnival's website . The Cruise Elegant dress code applies for the main dining rooms and the Steakhouse. However, Lupoli said passengers dressed in Cruise Casual will not be turned away from those venues on Cruise Elegant nights.

Royal Caribbean International dress code

Royal Caribbean breaks its suggested attire into several categories. Casual includes polos, jeans and sundresses, but the line asks that guests wear swimwear only on the pool deck and shorts at breakfast and lunch, according to its website .

The line defines smart casual "as a step up from your typical dinner wear," including collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses. Passengers are also welcome to wear items like jackets and blazers.

For formal attire, the line said on its website, "make it a night out in your best black-tie look - suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns." The line may have one to four formal nights on a given cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

"When it comes to what to wear, you can go resort casual or get decked out and look your best – it's your call," Norwegian said on its website .

Cruise casual clothing – including jeans and shorts for men and jeans, casual dresses and shorts for women – is acceptable at the buffet and most specialty restaurants anytime during the day. Guests can wear swimwear at the buffet and outdoor restaurant as long as they have a shirt or cover-up and footwear.

Passengers cannot wear certain items such as tank tops for men, baseball caps and overly faded jeans, those that have holes in them or those worn below the hips in the main dining rooms or specialty restaurants, the line said on its website.

In Norwegian's "more formal dining room or in our more upscale specialty restaurants," the line calls for smart casual clothing, which includes slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts and tops for women, and collared shirts, jeans and slacks for men.

What kind of food is included on a cruise?: Here's how to take advantage on your next sailing

Holland America Line dress code

Holland America guests can dress casually during the day, though they must always wear shirts or cover-ups and footwear inside, a spokesperson for the line said in an email.

The nighttime dress code has two categories. Smart casual includes a sport shirt or sweater and slacks for men, and a sweater or blouse and a skirt or pants for women. "Shorts, pool and beachwear, distressed jeans and tank tops are not permitted in table service restaurants," the spokesperson said.

On dressy nights, the line recommends blouses, skirts, slacks, dresses, collared shirts and jackets. There will be two dressy nights on most seven-night cruises, with additional dressy nights for longer sailings. Guests can reference the ship's daily program for the evening's suggested attire.

On the line's Grand Voyages, the line recommends suits or dresses when formal attire is suggested. "Grand Voyages are 60-plus-day voyages, and this is the only time guests would be in 'formal' attire," the spokesperson said.

Cunard Line dress code

Cunard passengers can dress as they like during the day. "Then as the sun goes down, the style goes up," Cunard said in dress code guidelines provided by a spokesperson.

At night, the line asks guests to wear smart attire in the majority of its restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. That includes "smart trousers" with a collared shirt – and optional jacket and tie – for men, and blouses and skirts or "stylish trousers and dresses" for women.

The line also has at least two Gala evenings over seven days of a sailing, when passengers are invited to dress up more.

"After 6:00pm on Gala evenings, it's dinner jacket, tuxedo, or dark suit for the men with a regular tie or bow tie," the line said. "Evening or cocktail dress, smart trouser suit, or formal separates for the ladies please."

How should passengers pack for cruise line dress codes?

Dorsey recommended women bring a "nice long skirt" and a blouse or a dress. "You know, you might wear slacks every other night, but if they come upon a more formal night, then you can kind of dress something like that up," she said.

For men, she suggested packing collared shirts and nice pants – even chinos are formal enough. "And maybe throw one jacket in there and then you're prepared"

Cruise lines may also have special events that call for unique attire, such as an all-white ensemble  at Norwegian's White Hot Party.

Even if formal nights aren't as formal as they used to be, they still provide an excuse to get dressed up: cruise lines will have photographers out on those nights to take portraits of guests, Dorsey said.

Two sailings in one trip? What to know about 'side-to-side' cruises

less formal cruises

As I walked into the cruise terminal at Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades with my passport in hand, I had deja vu. I pulled up the boarding pass on my phone, dropped my duffle bag on the conveyor belt at security and shuffled up to the check-in counter with more practiced precision than usual, almost as if I’d rehearsed it.

That’s probably because I had gone through almost the same process just 72 hours earlier at PortMiami. I disembarked a Norwegian Cruise Line ship and boarded a sailing with Celebrity Cruises the same day last month, known as a side-to-side cruise.

Side-to-side and back-to-back cruises allow passengers to extend their trips by taking consecutive sailings, each with distinct benefits. Here’s what passengers should know:

What is a side-to-side cruise?

Guests sailing side-to-side disembark one ship and board another on the same day.

That allowed Richard and Jasmine Ramnarine to combine a family vacation with a romantic getaway. After taking a six-night Carnival Cruise Line cruise from Miami with their family in November 2022, Jasmine’s parents took the couple’s daughters back home to Atlanta. Meanwhile, they continued on another sailing with adults-only brand Virgin Voyages .

Richard, 37, described the experiences as “night and day.”

The couple, who run the travel and lifestyle YouTube channel A Rich and Jazzy Life , took two distinct sailings and cut down on time spent in transit by heading straight from Carnival Celebration to Virgin’s Valiant Lady.

Each had their own unique dining and beverage options, design elements and activities (Celebration features the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster , for instance, while Valiant Lady has an onboard tattoo parlor). “You don't have to travel all the way home again,” Richard said. “You get two cruises with just one trip to Miami.”

For me, knowing I had brought all my cruise essentials – sunscreen, bathing suit, tie and jacket for the formal night – with me on Norwegian Viva also made boarding my second cruise on Celebrity Ascent less stressful (just be sure not to toss any prohibited items in your bag between sailings). Cruise lines also offer laundry services , so guests don't have to bring enough clothes for two voyages.

Jasmine, 35, noted that cruise lines often have themed events that call for specific attire, so travelers may want to pack strategically. “So, you want to make sure that you have your red outfit (for Virgin’s Scarlet Night), your pajamas for the pajama party on Virgin, then you want to have your all-white outfit for (Carnival’s White Hot Night Party),” she said.

What is a back-to-back cruise?

Back-to-back cruises are consecutive sailings on the same ship.

Passengers have to get off the ship and board again but typically do so before or after other passengers have disembarked. “You'll get escorted off, you'll say hello to the customs officer, and you'll turn around and go through the boarding process again,” said Susan Guthrie, a travel agent and owner of Cruisin' with Susan and More, affiliated with Travel with Sparkle. “But it's very fast. There's no lines.”

Those guests can also leave their luggage on the ship. She cautioned that travelers must contact the cruise line directly – or through their travel agent – to link the bookings so they can avoid having to go through the full embarkation process a second time.

What is wave season?: Why you should book your next cruise now

And just because you're on the same ship doesn't mean everything will be identical. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, for example, many cruise lines alternate itineraries – such as Eastern to Western – on longer sailings, giving guests a chance to sample different parts of the region, according to Guthrie. “If you stay in the same room, you really develop a nice relationship with your stateroom attendant because you'll keep the same one for the next cruise,” she added.

Are side-to-side or back-to-back cruises cheaper?

Cruise lines don’t typically offer discounts for sailing multiple times in a row, but both tactics can save travelers money. Passengers can take more than one cruise while only having to book a single set of flights. They also save on booking a pre-cruise hotel stay for the second itinerary since they’re already at their departure point, among other costs.

In my case, marrying two cruises gave me a best-of-both-worlds trip. Trading in the thrilling rides and musicals of Norwegian Viva for the more laid-back Celebrity Ascent was as easy as an Uber ride between ports.

Moscow Cruise Route

Frequently asked questions from our travelers, what is the best time of the year to go on a moscow - st. petersburg river cruise.

The cruises are operated from the month of May until the beginning of fall. The best weather conditions during this period are usually from June through late July, but if you are looking for a trip at a more relaxed pace with less tourists in the cities on the route, we highly recommend to take a look at the months of May and September.  For more info, please see our useful tips .

Which cities and towns will I visit on a Moscow - St. Petersburg cruise?

The cruise itinerary covers all the main and the most important locations on the route. During the cruise you will have a chance to get acquainted not only with Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also with smaller towns and villages like Goritsy, Kizhi, Yaroslavl, Mandrogui. The number of cities and towns to be visited and the exact itinerary vary depending on the duration of the cruise.

Is it better to start the cruise in Moscow or in St. Petersburg?

The starting point of the cruise is totally up to you. You won’t miss any important sights whether you start the cruise in Moscow or in St. Petersburg. We always recommend checking the flight schedules from your city first in order to decide whether it is more convenient for you to fly into Moscow or St Petersburg.

A Russian Land Tour or a River cruise - which is better?

This decision completely depends on your preferred way of travelling. During the Russian river cruise you will not only visit the two largest cities of Russia, but also small towns and villages along the route and you will have a chance to participate in master classes, learn a little Russian language and dive into local Russian culture and hospitality. For those who prefer custom-made programs and more free time in the cities of their choice we recommend a land tour, both are excellent options. To find out more about the differences click here .

Do I need a visa for a Russian River Cruise?

If your citizenship is not on the list of countries with visa-free access to Russia, you will need a valid Russian visa. Please make sure to start the process in a timely manner, so as to avoid any last-minute pressure. More details on Russian Visas can be found here .

Carnival Cruise Line shares a big smoking rule decision

Smoking has become less popular in the U.S., but it has not fallen fully out of favor.

That creates a challenge for cruise lines, as they must accommodate smokers while also taking into account the health and safety of nonsmoking passengers.

Cruise ships are not bound by U.S. laws that prohibit smoking indoors in every place except in select casinos. In addition, cruise passengers can't simply leave the ship to smoke, and they most certainly can't smoke in their cabins.

Related: Carnival brings back a controversial fan favorite activity

So if the cruise lines want to attract smokers to sail on their ships, they must designate smoking areas. Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) ships, much like rival Royal Caribbean's ships, designate multiple smoking areas.

Both cruise lines also allow smoking in part of their casinos while also having designated outdoor smoking areas on the pool deck. Smokers generally want more smoking areas while nonsmokers, especially casino players, don't like being exposed to secondhand smoke.

It's challenging for both companies as they want to keep all their passengers happy. In the case of the casino, the answer has been dictated by money. Royal Caribbean has tested banning smoking in its casino multiple times, and it results in lower revenue, so the decision to allow smoking in parts of the casino is clear.

Where to allow smoking outdoors, however, is a bigger question, and Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald, recently weighed in on the controversial topic.

Carnival says no to smokers

Carnival has an area on its ships called the Serenity Decks. These are adults-only areas that vary by ship, but they generally have hot tubs, a pool, a bar and plenty of seating for people to enjoy the outdoors away from children,

"Look, you'll still be on the same ship as the kids, the hoopla, and all the Carnival-style excitement ... but you could easily forget because when you’re at Serenity you could not be further from it all," the cruise line says on its website.

"The world you'll find yourself in is one of complete peace, sea breezes, and, of course, a nearby bar. It's the place to get done the kind of stuff you just can't seem to do anywhere else — reconnect with your partner, finish that book, or do absolutely, blissfully, nothing at all."

More Cruising:

  • Royal Caribbean fixes a problem that's unique to big ships
  • Carnival Cruise Line fixes a passenger payment problem
  • Carnival Cruise Line shares controversial onboard dining policy

Currently, you can do a lot of things on the Serenity decks, but you can't smoke. That's something Heald addressed on his Facebook page.

"One thing I will not be able to help with are the changes people requested for the gorgeous Serenity Decks we have on our ships," he said. "Firstly a request to make one side a smoking section. 'P' said 'we live in a free society, and if Carnival’s smokers want to smoke, then that is their right and that includes on Serenity Deck.'”

Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next cruise.

Heald made clear that that was not going to happen.

"Well, we do indeed live in a free society but we also live in a more non-smoking world than ever before. So while we will continue to provide outdoor smoking areas for as long as possible we will not be allowing smoking on Serenity Deck," he added.

Carnival passengers share their smoking thoughts

Where people can smoke on a cruise ship is a contentious issue, but it's not a simple one, where all smokers want more smoking areas.

"Good morning! I am a smoker but I totally agree with no smoking on the Serenity Deck because just because I smoke not everyone else does. I respect that," posted Angel Goins.

That's not an uncommon feeling even among smokers.

"Thank you for keeping the serenity deck smoke-free. I’m a smoker and find the smoking areas to be quiet, kid-free, and relaxing," Tessa Jones added.

Other smokers would like to see the current rules modified.

"Vaping should be allowed on Serenity and more outside areas. There is no fire, hazardous smoke, or ash," Jeff Henderson wrote.

Many nonsmokers shared their appreciation for Carnival limiting where passengers can smoke.

"People who smoke, unfortunately, do have a right to kill themselves. That being said, they DO NOT have the right to take us with them. That's why I appreciate Carnival keeping them away from me," posted Frances Storey.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Monday that the military would hold drills involving tactical nuclear weapons — the first time such an exercise has been publicly announced by Moscow .

A look at tactical nuclear weapons and the part they play in the Kremlin’s political messaging.

WHAT ARE TACTICAL NUCLEAR WEAPONS?

Unlike nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles that can destroy entire cities, tactical nuclear weapons for use against troops on the battlefield are less powerful and can have a yield as small as about 1 kiloton. The U.S. bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II was 15 kilotons.

Such battlefield nuclear weapons — aerial bombs, warheads for short-range missiles or artillery munitions — can be very compact. Their small size allows them to be discreetly carried on a truck or plane.

Unlike strategic weapons, which have been subject to arms control agreements between Moscow and Washington, tactical weapons never have been limited by any such pacts, and Russia hasn’t released their numbers or any other specifics related to them.

WHAT HAS PUTIN SAID ABOUT NUCLEAR WEAPONS?

Since launching the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly reminded Western nations about Moscow’s nuclear might in a bid to discourage them from increasing military support to Kyiv.

In this photo provided by Kherson Regional Military Administration, a destroyed apartment building is seen at the site of a Russian army attack with guided aerial bombs in Kherson, Ukraine, Thursday, May 15, 2024. (Kherson Regional Military Administration via AP)

Early on in the war, Putin frequently referenced Moscow’s nuclear arsenal by vowing repeatedly to use “all means” necessary to protect Russia. But he later toned down his statements as Ukraine’s offensive last summer failed to reach its goals and Russia scored more gains on the battlefield.

Moscow’s defense doctrine envisages a nuclear response to an atomic strike or even an attack with conventional weapons that “threaten the very existence of the Russian state.” That vague wording has led some pro-Kremlin Russian experts to urge Putin to sharpen it to force the West to take the warnings more seriously.

Putin said last fall that he sees no reason for such a change.

“There is no situation in which anything would threaten Russian statehood and the existence of the Russian state,” he said. “I think that no person of sober mind and clear memory could have an idea to use nuclear weapons against Russia.”

WHY DID RUSSIA SEND NUCLEAR WEAPONS TO BELARUS?

Last year, Russia moved some of its tactical nuclear weapons into the territory of Belarus , an ally that neighbors Ukraine and NATO members Poland, Latvia and Lithuania.

Belarus’ authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko , had long urged Moscow to station nuclear weapons in his country, which has close military ties with Russia and served as a staging ground for the war in Ukraine.

Both Putin and Lukashenko said that nuclear weapons deployment to Belarus was intended to counter perceived Western threats. Last year, Putin specifically linked the move to the U.K. government’s decision to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing shells containing depleted uranium.

Neither leader said how many were moved — only that Soviet-era facilities in the country were readied to accommodate them, and that Belarusian pilots and missile crews were trained to use them. The weapons have remained under Russian military control.

The deployment of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, which has a 1,084-kilometer (673-mile) border with Ukraine, would allow Russian aircraft and missiles to reach potential targets there more easily and quickly, if Moscow decides to use them. It has also extended Russia’s capability to target several NATO allies in Eastern and Central Europe.
