Legendary Journeys and Adventures

Explore the best of New England on a journey through its picturesque heart, discovering new insights into landmark sites and historic homes, where country farms and nature's dramatically contrasting vistas evoke the spirit of a place whose ideas shaped America.

Classic New England lives in Boston Common, in the White Mountains aglow with autumn colors, in the general store and the diamond at Fenway Park... the drama of the rugged Maine coast... in Augustus Saint-Gaudens' studio where images of American heroes were forged, in millwheels, covered bridges, and white-steepled churches, and the rocky soil that has long been fertile ground for thinkers, artists, writers, inventors, entrepreneurs and Revolutionaries. This is, as Dayton Duncan observes, Ken Burns' backyard: "New England has always had a special place in American history and American thought. And New England has become Ken Burns' backyard – not just the place where he's raised his family and made his documentaries in the classic New England town of Walpole, New Hampshire, but also a place intertwined with many of the stories he's told: Mark Twain , Baseball , The Civil War and The National Parks: America's Best Idea . It's a distinct region with its own beauty and its own secret treasures – and who better to share them but one of its proudest residents."

Tauck Exclusive – film vignettes by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan

Exclusive film vignettes by documentary filmmakers ken burns and dayton duncan.

Get an exclusive perspective from filmmakers Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan in short films that tell stories of the people who shaped and defined New England; they bring their knowledge and behind-the-scenes insights to you via exclusive filmed narratives. Ken Burns has been making groundbreaking films chronicling the "American story" for more than 30 years, with a mission to explore who we are as Americans. His films have won more than a dozen Emmy Awards and two Oscar nominations, and include documentaries about our national parks and pastimes, America's wars and wealthy families, the men and women who changed history, and the times that changed us all.

Fairmont Copley Plaza

The oldest ballpark used in Major League Baseball, Boston's beloved Fenway Park has been the home of the American League's Boston Red Sox since the 1912 season; listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it has seen its share of baseball history. Over the decades, Fenway has accumulated a number of famous features, such as the legendary "Green Monster" left field wall; the center field "Triangle;" "Pesky's Pole" in right field; and "Williamsburg," named for Hall of Famer Ted Williams; you may see some of these landmarks on a walking tour of the stadium.

Mount Washington Omni Hotel

Walk the freedom trail, great mix of history, cultural, and local experiences and the ken burns' connection added so much enjoyment with short films shown on the rides that added to the history and culture of the area..

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

Hidden Gems of New England begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section  entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are frequent traveler to the U.S. from Canada, you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here .

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,   you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking  here.

We strongly recommend that your passport be valid for six months beyond the completion of your tour. We also recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents or cards are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., we suggest that contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases for which you might be at risk when you reach your destination in the U.S. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

All of the hotels and resorts on this itinerary have an elevator, with the exception of the Hawk Inn & Mountain Resort. If you have a walking difficulty, be sure to advise your Tauck Director at the beginning of the tour so that rooms close to the public areas or on the ground floor can be requested, if possible.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Temperatures in New England during the fall average about 50° to 70° F but be prepared for occasional extremes. We suggest that prior to departure you check a newspaper or the weather forecast on the Internet for up-to-date predictions.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

For our New England tours, cool, casual clothing along with a light sweater, jacket and bathing suit is recommended. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

Valet laundry service is available at all hotels except at the Jackson Gore Inn where coin operated washers and dryers are available. All of the hotels have a swimming pool. Hair dryers are available in all rooms.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for New England tours:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms
  • Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Autumn in Vermont, New England

New England holidays 2024 & 2025

Landing site of the Pilgrims and powder keg for the American Revolution, New England has a significant past that has left a historical legacy across all six of its states. But there’s much more to present-day New England than its seismic past. Our USA specialists spend a lot of time each year visiting the region, which is as rich in experiences as it is small in proportions, so they can help you plan your holiday to New England.

Driving is an easy way of getting around and, en route, you start to appreciate the different personalities of New England’s six constituent states. Land-locked Vermont boasts white clapboard churches and red-barn dairy farms. Lashed by the Atlantic, Maine feels wilder and conjures the landscapes of Andrew Wyeth’s paintings. New Hampshire , which only brushes the coast, features lakes and the White Mountains National Forest. Massachusetts has progressive Boston at its heart, and adjoining Rhode Island and Connecticut respectively lay claim to Gilded Age Newport and Yale University.

Wherever your journey takes you, our New England specialists will meticulously plan it around your tastes and interests.

Boston and New England holidays are russet red autumns, white-sand beaches, waterfront towns, lobster pots and wooden docks

A halcyon escape of all-American charm, New England feels a world away from the everyday. Marvel at the mountain views, drift away on bone-white beaches and try the legendary lobster rolls.

New England’s white sand beaches, syrupy sugar shacks, iconic lighthouses and swathes of pristine coastline pander to a romantic image. You’ll find it all in the states of Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. You can settle down in Portland’s pretty waterfront city, dine farm-to-table in the birch-covered Berkshires and dream away your days on Cape Cod's stunning National Seashore.

Breeze through Boston’s wonderfully wanderable harbour-city where Harvard University students share the sidewalks with artists, baseball fans and city slickers. Come for the Irish pubs, the seafood restaurants and to snag tickets to a Red Sox game. Visit New England in autumn for fiery auburn and orange foliage. Come in summer and sail around Newport and Nantucket. And return in winter to see the snowy White Mountains and drink apple cider by roaring fires.

Where is Boston and New England? Boston is one of the USA’s oldest cities and is New England’s largest. It’s the capital state of Massachusetts and is situated on Massachusetts Bay in northeastern USA. Its compact in size and over one fourth is made up of the Charles River, Boston Harbour and part of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s the gateway to the rest of New England, which is made up of five other states — Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Maine, all sitting along the Atlantic Ocean. Martha’s Vineyard lies 7 miles off the Cape Cod peninsula and is reached by ferry or plane.

Boston Compact in size and with plenty of European influences, Boston is one of the USA’s prettiest cities, thanks to a gorgeous skyline, its Back Bay café culture and plenty of history and architecture. Walk the two-and-a-half-mile Freedom Trail for a step back in time through American history, see Old Masters at the Museum of Fine Arts, go modern with a trip to the Skywalk Observatory, catch a Red Sox ball game at Fenway Park and head to Beacon Hill for gorgeous Victorian brick-row houses and Massachusetts State House. A Boston Duck Tour will take you by unique mode of transport through Boston’s streets before landing in the Charles River and if you’ve ever had American University dreams, head across the river to Cambridge for a peek at Harvard University.

New England Get out of the city and head to the coast to experience the other captivating states of New England. From whale-watching to watersports and white-sand beaches to colonial architecture, you’ll find yourself embracing picture-postcard all-American charm loved by royalty, celebrities and Presidents of past. Off the shores of glorious beachy Cape Cod, you’ve got Martha’s Vineyard and beautiful Nantucket. New England life is rustic family-owned inns, water and beach – lighthouses still flash out warnings, super yachts dock in the harbours and clam shacks pop up everywhere.

What to do in New England Chase the Connecticut Wine Trail through beautiful countryside, follow Rhode Island’s Newport Cliff Walk past the back gardens of millionaire mansions and don’t leave Vermont without trying the maple syrup or Maine without trying the lobster. Hop on board a windjammer sailboat, look out for moose and puffins, catch the spectacular Waterfire Providence show in Rhode Island in May and October and visit mid September to mid October for that famous New England Fall.

Getting around With its stunning coastline and scenic roadways, New England is an ideal self-drive destination. You can start in Boston and tour all the states and towns with our handcrafted self-drive itinerary. It's a 5½-hour drive from Boston to Acadia National Park in Maine, and only 2½ hours by car to The White Mountains in New Hampshire. Downtown Boston is easily walkable, has lots of taxis and a good public transport system including the ‘T’ subway, which provides access to all the main attractions. In Maine, you can catch a ferry or charter a boat across to the Casco Bay Islands for the day. In all the New England states you’ll find driving a leisurely and scenic way to get around, and due to their small size, hiring a bicycle to explore is also a great option.

Food and drink In a destination known for its seaside living, you’re never going to be far from a lobster shack or ocean-sweet seafood dinner. Imagine summers spent in chic restaurants dining alfresco as star guest chefs prepare lavish menus and experience culinary events around charming towns that show off the best chefs and mixologists across New England. Expect farm-to-table dining, lamb loin with rhubarb and snap peas sprinkled with salt. There’s that famous Maine lobster, Boston’s cream pie, Rhode Island’s clam chowder and sweet maple syrup in Vermont. Pop by the ‘Cheers’ TV bar in Boston for beers, go European in Little Italy and head to rooftop bars for ice-cream sandwiches and cocktails. And those with a sweet tooth should put a tour of the Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Vermont on the list of things to do. Come autumn, dine by roaring fires in restaurants with ocean views and settle into quaint little bistros for pumpkin puree and seared day-boat scallops.

Shopping In Boston, there’s Julia Child’s beloved Savenor’s Market, luxury shopping plazas and designer stores in Back Bay and Newbury Street, and antiques and one-of-a-kind gifts in Beacon Hill. The rest of New England is void of big chains, instead offering delightful independent boutiques and artisan shops with everything from pottery and painting to jewellery and woodwork. Expect to pick up colourful maxi dresses, woollen socks, cute gifts and preppy basics.

Resort fees It is standard practice for resorts/hotels within the USA to charge a mandatory resort fee which is payable locally. This fee can be anywhere between 5USD to 40 USD per room per night and is not included in the cost of your Kuoni holiday.

Holidays to New England

New England Road

New England Fly-drive

New England is a great place for a fly-drive holiday - it’s compact and manageable with comfortable mileages, yet brimming with variety. Within a 90-minute drive of Boston you can be walking a shore path in Maine, climbing a mountain in New Hampshire or marvelling at the mansions of Newport, Rhode Island.

New England fly-drive holidays have something for everyone at any time of the year. The New England region presents four distinct seasonal personalities: Lush summers are perfect for exploring superb beaches, or cycling along shady country lanes. Fall is perfectly suited to driving lazily through mountains blanketed with gold-and-red fall foliage. Crystal-sharp winters beckon you to ski perfect pistes or potter around antique shops lining peaceful village greens, while Spring turns into Summer with a touch of warmth and a riot of colour - lilacs, peonies and the blossoming dogwood trees.

New England Accommodation

Holidays to new england include:.

BOS Acorn-Street-Beacon-Hill[1].jpg

Boston The proud Yankee city of Boston will be your gateway to the region, and it’s well worth a two or three night stay at the beginning of your New England holiday. Unique amongst American cities in being steeped in history on a European scale, Boston is a pleasing blend of the old and new.

Start by walking the ‘Freedom Trail’, a three-mile route that takes you around sixteen of the city's most important landmarks. Contemporary city life is captured at Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, enlivened by clowns and magicians. The busy city streets can be avoided by taking the ‘T’ subway – use it to make a visit to the fascinating Kennedy Library and Museum at Columbia Point.

Boston is the state capital of Massachusetts , the largest of the six states which make up New England. Away from the big city you will find a contrasting terrain; from the rolling hills of the Berkshires to the outstretched arm that is Cape Cod with its seaside towns and miles of sandy beaches.

NH Echo Lake Franconia Notch

New Hampshire

New Hampshire features in almost all New England holidays with its picture perfect villages nestled beneath mountain scenery, including Mount Washington - at over 6,000 feet it’s the highest peak in Northern Eastern USA.

Middle Bridge Woodstock VT

Connecticut

RI Mansion at Cliff walk.jpg

Rhode Island

Tiny Rhode Island , just 37 miles east to west and 48 miles north to south is a sailing paradise. Settle into a pavement cafe in Newport on a summer’s afternoon to gaze upon the sleek schooners on the water and the opulent mansions, once the summer homes of families such as the Vanderbilts and Astors.

LUXURY HOLIDAYS & TOURS

New england, birthplace of america.

The birthplace of America, New England is formed by the northeastern states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Famed for its pretty seaside towns and colonial-era landmarks, clapboard villages and glorious autumnal foliage, the region certainly doesn’t lack charm.

Stretching from the rocky, lighthouse-studded shores of Maine to the windswept beaches of Cape Cod, with Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket just a short ferry ride away, New England’s diverse coastline offers you everything from quaint fishing towns to prime whale watching opportunities. Not to mention an abundance of fresh, local seafood.

In Boston, the leafy capital of Massachusetts, history buffs can follow the iconic Freedom Trail to 16 major revolutionary sites, including the church steeple where Paul Revere hung lanterns to warn of the impending British invasion. You’ll find the prestigious Yale University in neighbouring Connecticut, including its acclaimed Peabody Museum of Natural History, whilst Rhode Island lays claim to the glamorous, Gilded Age mansions of sailing capital Newport.

Though a genuine year-round playground, New England is at its scenic best in September and October when the leaves turn colour the landscape transforms into a spectacular patchwork of deep crimson, orange and gold. More than 80 per cent of New Hampshire is covered in forest, making it one of the best places to see the seasons change.

You’ll find more ‘leaf peeping’ hotspots across the Connecticut River in rural Vermont, as well as some of the prettiest towns in America – including historic Woodstock and the postcard-perfect alpine village of Stowe. For an even deeper rural experience, continue south to the softly rolling Berkshires of western Massachusetts, an enchanting world dotted with wooden churches, red dairy barns and traditional country stores.

New england holidays 2024 & 2025.

New England offers a unique richness; in its landscapes, history and welcome. Picturesque towns and villages dot rolling hillsides that transform into a mosaic of earthly colours each autumn. Wooden lighthouses overlook a spectacular coastline of craggy bays and forested islets, drenched in the purest sea air. For a soul soothing holiday, surrounded by natural beauty, look no further.

Where is New England?

New England comprises the six states in the far north east of America; Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Maine is the largest, sharing a 611 mile border with the Eastern Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick, and a stunning 3,500 mile coastline of rocky headlands and intricate islands with the Atlantic Ocean – which you can explore on a New England cruise .

Boston is the main gateway to New England. It is just under an 8 hour flight from the UK, and a 3 hours 30 minutes train journey from New York .

Things to do in New England

Here are five of our North America Experts’ favourites:

  • Admire the autumn colours – visit New England in the fall to witness the hillsides transform into a patchwork of earthy reds and golden yellows
  • Eat lobster in Cape Cod – where only the freshest seafood will do, then walk it off along miles of deserted beach, lapped by the Atlantic Ocean
  • Go hiking in Acadia National Park – 65 square miles of breathtaking scenery on Mount Desert Island, just off the coast of Maine
  • Go lighthouse spotting – New England is famous for them, with Portland Head, Nubble Point and New London Ledge three of the best!
  • Catch a game at Fenway Park – home to the Boston Red Sox. While in the city, make sure to walk the Freedom Trail; a journey through American history

You could also ride the cog railway up Mount Washington,  go  whale watching from Boston ,  explore the Green Mountains, visit the cranberry bogs during harvesting… there is so much to do on holiday in New England!

When to Visit New England?

Famous for its fall foliage, New England offers something at all times of the year.

Summer temperatures reach the mid to high 20’s, ideal for outdoor activities. September and October tend to be nearer 20°C, perfect to enjoy a tour of the autumn colours . Boston is popular for a winter city break, wonderfully festive, but not usually below zero during the day, due its coastal location.

Planning a New England Holiday

Whether you would like to book one of our New England self drives or just have a few questions on where best to visit, please get in touch, our North America Experts will be pleased to help.

Please note, fall foliage escorted tours sell out quickly, so advance booking is highly recommended.

When is the next bank holiday? Full list of 2024 dates

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Graham Stone/Shutterstock (14464430i) General View May Day Bank Holiday Weather at Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall. Seasonal weather, May Day Bank Holiday, Newquay, UK - 06 May 2024

This year saw the return to eight bank holidays a year, after the King’s coronation last year meant an extra Monday off in May.

The next one will be the fifth of the year and lands on the final Monday of May.

There will then be three more for people in England and Wales: the final Monday of August, Christmas, and Boxing Day.

People in Scotland and Northern Ireland get one more each however: marking St Andrew’s Day in November and the Battle of the Boyne in July respectively.

So, when is 2024’s next bank holiday? Here’s all you need to know.

When is the next bank holiday?

The next bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland falls on Monday, May 27.

It’s known as the Spring bank holiday, and was initially chosen to mark the first Monday after the Christian holiday of Whitsun, or Pentecost, before being moved forward a week to the last Monday of May.

What will the weather be like?

The weather forecast for the bank holiday weekend looks mixed: a mix of sunshine and rain varying widely around the country.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway said: ‘The Bank Holiday weekend will see some sunny spells and it will feel quite pleasant in the sunshine for many on Saturday in particular.

‘Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday will likely see a return to sunshine and showers. Low pressure to the west is likely to push fronts into the UK on Sunday, these tending to break up and turn more showery in nature as they do so.

‘We are likely to see some heavy, possibly thundery showers on both days, but there should still be some dry spells in between, and in any sunshine it will feel pleasantly warm.’

When are the bank holidays in 2024?

All of the uk bank holidays in 2024.

Here are the past and upcoming dates for 2024:

  • New Year’s Day – Monday, January 1
  • 2nd January (Scotland) – Tuesday, January 2
  • St Patrick’s Day (Northern Ireland) – Monday, March 18
  • Good Friday – Friday, March 29
  • Easter Monday – Monday, April 1
  • Early May bank holiday – Monday, May 6
  • Spring bank holiday – Monday, May 27
  • Battle of the Boyne (Northern Ireland) – Friday, July 12
  • Summer bank holiday (Scotland) – Monday, August 5
  • Summer bank holiday (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) – Monday, August 26
  • St Andrew’s Day (Scotland, substitute day) – Monday, December 2
  • Christmas Day – Wednesday, December 25
  • Boxing Day – Thursday, December 26 .

Do trains and buses run on bank holidays?

Most trains and buses usually run as normal on bank holidays, though some train lines tend to complete essential work over bank holidays meaning there could be disruptions.

However, there is often plenty of notice given if this is the case.

Commuters walking toward a train at London Victoria Station

On bank holidays, buses generally run, but services could change or be less frequent – so always check the times in advance before setting off anywhere.

Most bus services run their Sunday service on bank holidays, meaning you can still catch a bus, but they might end earlier or have longer gaps in service.

If you need to travel this bank holiday, most bus services have a timetable you can track online, so you aren’t left waiting for a bus that isn’t going to come.

Just 18% of companies in the UK are led by women, a nd while data suggests female entrepreneurs are on the rise, men still receive more funding and are entrusted with higher average loans to get them started.

In a new series every Tuesday,  Money blog reporter Jess Sharp speaks to women who are bossing it in their respective fields - hearing their stories, struggles and advice for those who want to follow in their footsteps.

First up is the co-founder and CEO of GoHenry, Louise Hill...

For many women, having kids pauses or unfairly disrupts their careers. For Louise, the opposite happened.

Growing up in Lowestoft on the east coast of England, she had a childhood filled with days on the beach, kayaking and exploring old boats. But her own kids arrived into a very different world - one of apps and downloads and online market places.

It wasn't long before she started to think about financial education and the importance of practical money skills.

Back when her two children had iPods and would download music from iTunes, she would print off an invoice every time they landed a bill in her inbox. The invoice would then be stuck on the fridge.

When they came to her at the weekend asking for pocket money, Louise would point to the fridge and deduct the amount they had already spent from their allowance.

"I was trying to make them understand that money has to come from somewhere, and it really doesn't grow on trees," she told the Money team.

"I could go through the process of saying, well you'd normally get £5 but here's what you've spent this week, so you only get £1.20."

How the idea for GoHenry came about

Among school pick-ups and kids' football games, she heard other parents complaining about their children's spending habits.

One parent told a story about her daughter spending £200 on an online My Little Pony game. Another didn't know what to do when a battered-up car arrived at her driveway on a flatbed truck after her son spent £600 on eBay on what he thought was a toy.

"Everybody had a story. It was amazing to realise we were all having the same problems and kids were starting to have access through their parents to the digital world, but there was nothing in the market to help parents teach them to access it in a safe way," Louise said.

"We wanted to create a service that would empower them with freedom, confidence, to use and understand money but in a safe environment."

The idea of GoHenry, a prepaid debit card and learning app, was born.

With a big mortgage, little money to set up a business and two kids to look after following a divorce, Louise said she and her co-founders (who quickly left the company) "grafted".

"I could have got a fairly safe, well-paid corporate job - jumping off the edge of a cliff into the uncertainty of starting a business was quite a leap," she said.

"But, the idea was too good, frankly.

"It took a little while to work out the right tool to use, so we worked nights, we worked weekends, we worked holidays, all because we really, really wanted to bring this to market."

In an initial round of seed funding, she raised more than £650,000, which was followed by several successful crowdfunding campaigns.

The challenges

Her company eventually launched in 2012 and while it's now a huge success, delivering a service to more than two million people across France, Spain, Italy, the US and the UK, Louise said it hasn't been without its challenges.

The first one was the name. When it first came to market, the business was called PKTMNY (pronounced pocket money), but the name was changed about 18 months later after she realised it was "stupid".

"Nobody could say it and nobody could spell it, it was a really silly idea," she added.

The business got the name GoHenry after its very first customer – an 11-year-old boy named Henry from Bristol.

Another challenge was its scale of growth - GoHenry grew in a big way, very quickly, which meant constant changes needed to be made to the company structure.

"About six or seven years ago, we were growing incredibly quickly... I know this sounds ridiculous but almost every six months you'd have to step back and look at what we needed," she said.

This was an issue Louise had faced and failed to overcome years before in a previous business - an ecommerce company called Manners which she was forced to sell after running out of cash to sustain its growth.

"We failed to think about how we would scale it. We couldn't grow it any more because we didn't have enough cash in the company. At the time, I was really cross with myself for not having thought about that," she said.

'I was becoming a roadblock'

In around 2017-18, Louise realised another issue with GoHenry - herself.

"I was becoming a roadblock. I was working flat out and so much of the information about why we did things the way we did them was in my head or in my laptop files," she explained.

"That kind of snuck up on me and I was fundamentally creating a risk for the business and stopping us growing as quickly as we could."

She started a campaign across the company, encouraging staff to raise "single points of failure" to see where the problems were.

"I appeared in there an awful lot," she said. "So, yeah, that's a top tip from me - don't let that sneak up on you. Plan ahead."

What's been the key to her success?

Now running for more than 12 years, GoHenry has continued to expand and innovate.

Louise said keeping her mission of "making every kid smart with money" at the forefront had been "fundamental".

"That is our sole focus. This isn't an add-on product to another business, everyone who joins GoHenry is here for one reason and that's to serve Gen Z and now Generation Alpha's money needs and I think that makes a big difference," she added.

Louise's advice for others

"Who am I to give advice?" was her initial response when asked this question, adding that she hoped to see more young girls and women see images of people who look like them succeeding.

"The more that becomes the norm, the more people will think they can do it too," she said.

"I've been asked many times what's the difference between a founder, an entrepreneur and a non-entrepreneur, and it has to come down to risk appetite," she added.

"I've thought about all sorts of different mindsets, different backgrounds, different abilities with, I don't know, spreadsheets or contacts... But at some point it comes down to being confident enough."

So practically, she said women looking to set up a business should start by finding support groups.

"There are loads out there. They can be hugely helpful because founding a business can be lonely and a tough move to make. Nobody pretends that it's easy," she said.

Another tip she had was to plan for scale "from day one", thinking about the partners you work with, the suppliers, how much money you need to bring in and how often you might need to "go out and get more money".

But the most important lesson, she says, is was to hire people you know are better than you.

"It's scary to hire people that you know are much better than you but if you can do that and then give them the space they need to do what they can really well, you'll have a much higher chance of a successful business," she said.

" What's the worst that can happen if you fail? Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start again."

A company that makes microchips for artificial intelligence and became the first chipmaker to be worth first $1trn then $2trn has today reached another record high.

Nvidia shares are now going for a record $1,132.19 after it posted higher-than-expected quarterly profits and made strong forecasts. Its value is now $2.62trn (£2.05trn)

The US-based, New York-listed company is in the ranks of tech giants worth the eye-watering trillion sum, including Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Google parent company Alphabet, as investors expect the company will benefit from the AI revolution.

Also making headlines was UK company Boohoo, the Manchester-based fast fashion retailer, as it cancelled annual bonuses worth £3m.

A pay proposal for bosses was also ditched after talks with shareholders as the company has experienced losses after the pandemic-era online shopping boom faded and a cost of living crisis eroded consumer spending power.

Revolution Bars has rejected a proposed offer from rival Nightcap, warning it is "incapable of being delivered".

The hospitality group launched a sale process and restructuring plans last month amid efforts to stay afloat. The company's restructuring plans include £12.5m in fundraising and the closure of 18 venues.

But Revolution has said the non-binding proposal from Nightcap  did not include the proposed fundraising and would not work as it was "highly conditional".

The rate of price rises in UK shops has returned to "normal levels", according to new industry figures.

Overall annual shop inflation eased to 0.6% in May, down from 0.8% in April, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and NielsenIQ said.

The figure is the lowest since November 2021.

More than 120 business leaders have written an open letter giving their backing to Labour in the general election.

The letter printed in The Times has been signed by figures including the founders of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales, chef Tom Kerridge and former CEOs of Heathrow, JP Morgan and Aston Martin.

Openreach plans to build full fibre broadband in over 500 more locations across the UK, it has been announced.

The new locations include 400,000 sites in the hardest to reach, most rural parts of the country, including Tobermory in Argyll and Bute, Haworth in West Yorkshire, Saundersfoot in South Wales, Pinxton in Derbyshire, Harlow in Essex and Roborough in Devon.

The work, which is part of Openreach's £15bn project to upgrade the UK's broadband infrastructure, will cover a further 2.7 million homes and businesses by the end of 2026.

Clive Selley, chief executive of Openreach, said the plan was to build right across the UK, "from cities and towns to far-flung farms and island communities".

"Over time, we've learnt to deliver predictably, consistently and at a rapid pace - despite this being a hugely complex national engineering project," he said.

London is officially the world's cleverest city, according to an annual study.

Oxford Economics , an independent economic advisory firm, found the capital topped the list when it came to "human capital" - this encompasses the collective knowledge and skills of a city's population.

In its report, the firm found London came out on top in part due to the number of higher education institutions in the city, "which helps it achieve one of the highest rates of educational attainment in the world".

"London also attracts many highly educated people from abroad and several global corporations are headquartered in the city to take advantage of this world-class talent pool," the report added.

In second place was Tokyo and in third place was Riyadh.

Top cities by human capital score:

1. London, UK

2. Tokyo, Japan

3. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

4. New York, US

5. Seoul, South Korea

6. Paris, France

7. Washington, DC, US

8. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

9. Sydney, Australia

10. Boston, US

Concerns are being raised as fast fashion retailer Shein has its sights set on a London stock market listing.

Our City editor Mark Kleinman previously reported the fast fashion giant had held talks with the London Stock Exchange about staging a blockbuster public listing in the UK.

Shein has quickly become one of the world's biggest online clothing retailers and the talks came at a time of crisis for the City as a listing venue for large multinationals.

But senior MPs are calling for more scrutiny of the Chinese company, which sells ultra-cheap clothing and has faced allegations of labour malpractices.

Alicia Kearns, the Conservative chair of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote on X: "With Shein's prices so low, the London Stock Exchange needs to ask itself, whose suffering is subsiding those prices?

"A company which has failed to make full disclosures about its supply chains as required by UK law, and where there are grave concerns about its factory working conditions, has no place in London."

Sarah Champion, the Labour chair of the International Development Committee, told The Guardian: "Transparency in supply chains is vital and something all governments should be demanding. Serious concerns have been raised about the use of modern slavery by Shein which need investigating."

A Shein spokesperson told the Money blog that it acknowledged its role in "creating a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry" and "believed it was healthy to attract scrutiny and transparency" and "wanted to be held to the highest standards".

"Shein has a zero-tolerance policy for forced labour and we are committed to respecting human rights," they said in a statement.

"We take visibility across our entire supply chain seriously and we require our contract manufacturers to only source cotton from approved regions."

The company also said it was "investing millions of pounds in strengthening governance and compliance across its supply chain".

"Our regular supplier audits are showing a consistent improvement in performance and compliance by our supplier partners. This includes improvements in ensuring that workers are compensated fairly for what they do," they added.

Basically, the triple lock is a commitment from the government to keep the state pension in line with rising prices and wages.

The government's pledge is to uprate the new and basic pension every year by the highest of three things - earnings growth, inflation, or 2.5%. Hence the "triple" reference.

It was first announced by the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition government in the first budget following the 2010 election, and has been in place since the 2011-12 financial year – bar a brief suspension in 2022-23.

Prior to this, pensions had been increased at least in line with prices since 1980.

Why was it introduced?

The triple lock was brought in to protect the value of the state pension from being overtaken by increased living costs or the working population's income.

Announcing the scheme in his emergency June 2010 budget, then-chancellor George Osborne said pensioners would "have the income to live with dignity in retirement".

What does it apply to, what is it worth and who's eligible?

The triple lock applies to the basic or "old" state pension (paid to people who reached pension age before 6 April 2016), and the new state pension (6 April 2016 and later).

Last month saw the state pension rise by 8.5% to match the increase in average earnings - following a 10.1% hike the previous year.

It means for the current tax year (2024-25), the full new state pension is:

  • £221.20 per week
  • £11,502.40 per year

People who reached state pension age from April 2016 need at least 35 years on their national insurance record  to be eligible for the full new state pension.

The basic state pension is currently:

  • £169.50 per week
  • £8,814 per year

Men born before 6 April 1945 will need at least 44 qualifying national insurance years to get the full pension, while for women it's 39. Men and women born between April 1945 and April 1951 need 30 years.

Will the triple lock continue?

An ageing population and soaring inflation has raised questions about its long-term affordability.

A 2023 report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies said the triple lock adds an extra £11bn a year to public spending, while the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development warned the "costly" scheme could push up pension spending by about 0.8% of GDP by the 2027-28 tax year.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said back in March that the Conservative Party would commit to keeping the triple lock if it won the general election - after previously saying it was being kept "under review".

The party has now announced plans for a "triple lock plus" that would see pensioners' personal tax allowance rise by the same percentage as their pensions.

The Tories have frozen income tax allowances until 2028 - meaning millions of Britons are paying more tax by "stealth", contributing to a record tax burden on the country.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has also vowed to keep the regular triple lock for at least five years if his party replaces the Tories in power.

Raheem Sterling will financially support 14 students to attend university through his scholarship fund, with applications closing this week.

This will be the second year the Chelsea forward's scholarship programme will assist successful applicants at King's College London and the University of Manchester.

Applications for the Raheem Sterling Foundation Scholarship Programme is open to students of black, African and Caribbean heritage from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds to help bridge the equality gap.

It covers their tuition fees, accommodation and other essential costs.

But those who wish to apply will need to send in their application before the deadline this Thursday.

Speaking to the The Times , Sterling noted that in 2021-22 less than 5% of all UK students starting degrees were black.

He said he wanted to "take away" the worry of finances so that those from minority backgrounds could "go on to achieve their goals".

"It's really nice to see some of what I envisioned coming to life now," he said.

"I wanted to structure the foundation in a way that we could react to need and not be too rigid, as life and circumstances can change quickly.

"The focus is to provide opportunity to those who wouldn't otherwise have it, going into minority and under-served communities and opening eyes to new experiences."

Shares in housebuilder Persimmon have dropped nearly 3% this morning after Sky News revealed it is exploring a £1bn takeover bid for rival Cala Group.

City editor  Mark Kleinman reported on Saturday that the company was considering the move ahead of a deadline for bids.

Analysts at JP Morgan said investors are price sensitive to potential mergers and acquisitions in the sector at the moment, with the UK's competition watchdog already looking into a potential £2.5bn buyout of housebuilder Redrow by its rival Barratt .

It comes amid expectations that housing will be a key issue in the current general election campaign, which got under way last week.

Otherwise, the FTSE 100 is quite flat following the bank holiday, and is currently down 0.15% in early trading.

Gainers this morning include Rolls-Royce, which is up nearly 2%, and grocery delivery firm Ocado, which is up more than 5%.

It comes after industry figures this morning revealed that shop price inflation has "returned to normal" .

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.27 US or €1.17.

A banking app used by millions of people crashed for thousands this morning.

The NatWest app was displaying an error message for some users, with approximately 3,000 reporting issues on Downdetector from 7am onwards.

Users took to X to complain, with some pointing out the fault had occurred on payday for many.

"NatWest online banking is always broken when I need it," one said.

Customers trying to use the app were greeted with the message: "We're sorry, some kind of error has occurred when trying to establish a connection between your device and ourselves."

Some 9.8 million people use the app, according to the NatWest Group.

A NatWest spokesperson said the issue had now been resolved.
