Background and development [ ]

On September 27, 2013, a video was published on Lovato's Facebook page with the words "Neon Lights" formed out of neon lights and at the end, it said: "Sunday 6PM EDT". [1] [2] On the following Sunday, the Neon Lights Tour was announced along with the dates. The tour is named after the third single from the album Demi , " Neon Lights ". Fifth Harmony , Little Mix , Cher Lloyd , and magician Collins Key were featured as opening acts. Tickets became available on October 5, 2013. [3] During the season finale of The X Factor 2013, Lovato announced her plans to leave the show, instead endeavoring to focus on music and touring for 2014. When asked about her plans for the tour, Lovato stated "You can expect a show that I've never put on before, I'm really excited. Other shows I've had have been all about the music, but this time I want it to be about girl empowerment, I want it to be a huge party that everyone has fun at and leaves with an incredible experience." In the same interview, she teased about a possible cover collaboration on the tour with the girls of Fifth Harmony. [4] Upon another interview Demi stated she had been working with longtime friend Nick Jonas on the show, stating "He's helping create the show for my tour next year, today we were talking about designs and music and how we can really make my show incredible and like nothing I've done. [5]

On February 4, 2014, it was announced that Nick Jonas would be working as the Musical and Creative Director for the tour. Jonas told Rolling Stone "I'm overseeing video content, wardrobe, lighting, and staging, and then I'm extending into the musical side of things, which includes creating the arrangements for the songs. I'm building what Demi wanted, which is a show without stops and starts. Demi and I have the same manager, so I was immediately excited when I was offered the position. The relationship that Demi and I had over eight years really gives me the insight into how to best communicate with her and her team."I've been in rehearsals with the band for the last two weeks. The biggest challenge has been just trying to rethink some of the music and see how we could complement it with lights and video. I sat down with the band and said to them, 'You need to step into this like it's a new gig. None of these arrangements are going to sound like the originals, so you need to have an open mind.'" [6]

Promotion [ ]

Prior to beginning off the tour, Lovato released a teaser video on her YouTube channel displaying video content that would be used during the show. Nick Jonas told MTV News : "there's a lot of exclusive content for this tour. Demi came to the whole team just on the creative side — both video and music, and she said, 'I want to give fans something special for every bit of the show.'" Lovato went on to comment that one of her inspirations for the tour was Beyoncé , stating "I was also really inspired by Beyoncé, who had a music video for every single song on the album. Some of these I had music video ideas for a while, and I'm excited for people to see it." In the same interview, both Jonas and Lovato went on to describe the "re-imagining" of Lovato's older songs, saying she went online to see what her fans wanted to hear, and what Lovato had played on her last two tours. Jonas commented that "a lot of these songs aren't even the original arrangements. They've been completely re-imagined." Lovato also went on to say, "we've made them more current too, so we've transformed songs that went from being made a couple years ago to actually sounding like today's music." [7]

Concert synopsis [ ]

Lovato during The Neon Lights Tour in Belo Horizonte

The concert began with the black curtain opening and an opening underwater video sequence of Lovato, shown on the stage screens, accompanied with a black stage. The film showed heart beats, suggesting the opening song of " Heart Attack ". At the end of the underwater video, shots of the "Heart Attack" video begin to appear, Lovato singing the opening lines, before rising up out of the stage, surrounded by jets of steam, and going on to sing "Heart Attack". " Remember December " is performed with an accompanying music video showing Lovato surrounded by snow, in a winter environment. The song is based on a brand new arrangement, with white stage lighting and strobe effects. "Fire Starter" sees the stage lit up with fire effects, while "The Middle" begins with Lovato playing a set of drums, before kicking off into the also newly arranged song, an accompanying video showing Lovato in a desert. " Really Don't Care " begins with Lovato leaning up against the lead guitarist center stage. The stage is then lit up in bright pink and blue to match the song's 'girl power' vibe. The stage is bathed in blue lights while Lovato slows down with renditions of "Stop the World", "Catch Me", and " Here We Go Again ". These see Lovato play the guitar, and at certain US concerts she is joined by Nick Jonas , who accompanies her with a duet.

"Here We Go Again" is the most significantly changed song, made into a slow, sultry rock song. Lovato goes on to play " Made in the USA ", " Nightingale ", and "Two Pieces." At the end of "Two Pieces" Lovato heads down into the crowd, where she performs among the audience. At this point there is a guitar solo. "Warrior" sees Lovato strip down, playing the piano, an accompanying music video of her clad in armor being shown. Before this song Lovato gives a signature speech to each city, making it one of the most personal part of the concert. " Let It Go " is performed as a pop rock song, and at the end of " Don't Forget ", a video montage is shown of Lovato's musical journey, displaying various music videos of her songs. She then breaks into "Got Dynamite" after saying "that was me throughout the years..... and then..... I grew up." "Unbroken" and " Neon Lights " are both the club style song of the tour, with Cole Plante joining as a guest DJ on the US shows. During "Neon Lights", fans are able to use their phones on the Demi Lovato Official App, where they light up in time with each other, the stage is lit with Neon Lights, with an accompanying video being shown. During the choruses, steam it blown at around the stage, and strobe lights are shone out. As the song closes Lovato is lowered back into the stage, confetti being blown around the arena.

The encore begins with video content showing the media response to Lovato being admitted to rehab in 2010. This is followed by highlights of her success since her recovery, and when the video concludes, Lovato enters the stage. This is the only outfit change of the show, with Lovato wearing a long black dress to sing " Skyscraper ". At the final chorus Lovato is lifted off the stage on a platform, a series of spotlights directed upon her. Lovato closes the show by ripping theur dress off to reveal the outfit that she wore for the rest of the show, and putting on a leather jacket to sing the final song, " Give Your Heart a Break " with the curtain closing ending the concert. Overall the concert uses significant amounts of pyrotechnics, lighting, and video content; with little choreography allowing Demi to use the stage in her signature rock style. [8]

Critical reception [ ]

Lovato performing at Nationwide Arena on March 22

Jason Lipshutz from Billboard called the show "a highly enjoyable evening", and found the performance of "Neon Lights" to be the show's "most memorable moment". He also referred to the opening video for "Skyscraper" as being "A candid, surprisingly affecting montage." [9] Mary Diaz from 99.7 NOW praised the show as "MORE than worth the wait!", deeming it "jam packed with talent, beauty, amazing voices, beautiful stage sets, and magic." [10] Mike Wass from Idolator called the show "flashy yet strikingly intimate", stating "there was no choreography and only one costume change, but you don't need shiny distractions when you can belt out songs like Demi and connect with the crowd on such an emotional level. That's not to say that the production was boring. Far from it." [11] Maychelle Ornos from International Business Times called the tour "epic" and "something to look forward to because Demi has taken all the steps to please and wow her fans." [12] Kayla Ziadie of Sun-Sentinel also gave a positive review, feeling the show "truly began" with Lovato's performance of "Heart Attack". [13] Jim Harrington from San Jose Mercury News gave a negative review, criticizing Lovato's live vocals and calling the show "just barely interesting enough to keep one's attention." [14]

This set list is representative of the performance in East Rutherford on March 7, 2014. It does not represent all concerts for the duration of the tour. [15]

Demi Lovato Shimmers on Neon Lights Tour: Live Review

Demi Lovato’s latest headlining tour is named after her latest Top 40 hit, the EDM-biting synth spectacle “Neon Lights” that reached a new peak at No. 38 on this week’s Hot 100 chart. “Neon Lights” is an underwritten outlier on Lovato’s guitar-driven fourth LP, “Demi,” that may prove to be the album’s biggest hit when all is said and done. After witnessing how the 21-year-old delivered the song to her thousands of screaming supporters on Saturday night (Mar. 1) at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ, the growing success of the track is much more understandable.

“It’s Time To Tap That App!” read a graphic on the venue’s big screens as the “Neon Lights” beat began to bubble from the stage to close Lovato’s set. Earlier in the evening, the audience was urged to download the Demi app on their smartphones to take part in a special moment during the show. When “Neon Lights” began, the app-holders held up their phones, with flashing shades of pink, blue and green filling the screens and switching in time with the rhythm section. As Lovato approached the chorus — “Baby, when they look up at the sky/We’ll be shooting stars just passing by” — the smartphones’ twinkling flashlights started blinking with each passing beat, making the crowd look like a planetarium as Lovato sold the visual exhibition with a vociferous performance of the dance track. Sure, it was a gimmick… but it was a darn cool gimmick, and easily the most memorable moment of a highly enjoyable evening.

Trending on Billboard

Lovato does not yet possess the catalogue of her obvious female pop-rock forebearers, Kelly Clarkson and P!nk, but now has enough rock-solid singles and crowd-pleasing album tracks to compose a lean, covers-free set list. From deliciously bombastic opener “Heart Attack” onward, the pink-haired Lovato prowled the front of the Susquehanna Bank Center stage, clenching her hand and dropping her arm with great drama for the heavy moments, like the performance pro that she is. Curiously, recent single “Made In The USA” did not make it to Camden, and sadly, “Demi’s” best song, “Something That We’re Not,” was not bestowed to the amphitheater crowd. However, throwbacks like “Don’t Forget” and “Remember December” garnered huge reactions from the crowd — most of which was comprised of teen girls, some with faces painted, others with custom t-shirts, and all of whom knew every lyric to the evening’s encore of the towering ballad “Skyscraper” and the sparkling pop hit “Give Your Heart a Break.”

Demi Lovato: The ‘Demi’ Q&A

The most interesting aspect of Lovato’s stage show is the presentation of her well-documented past struggles: her withdrawing from a world tour to enter a treatment facility due to “physical and emotional issues” now occurred over two albums and three years ago, and no one would blame the singer for not addressing her 2010 problems during a 2014 performance. As much as Lovato has evolved as a performer since that scary period in her life, however, she has admirably made that past the visible bedrock of her artistry.

Lovato introduced “Skyscraper” with video footage of various media personalities announcing the news that she had scrapped her tour to enter rehab — a candid, surprisingly affecting montage. Earlier in the evening, she spoke obliquely about her show offering a momentary “escape” to the various problems of her audience members, making the subtext that music has always been her salvation crystal-clear. And when she performed “Warrior,” the “Demi” track that hints most recognizably at her past, dozens of crowd member held up print-outs that read “We Are Warriors” — a reminder that, for so many, Lovato’s appeal does not germinate from a number of hit singles or a display of vocal power, but from an ideal of surviving and thriving in the face of real difficulties.

The Neon Lights tour also included (and for some, introduced) two other winning female pop acts, both born from various incarnations of “The X Factor.” Fifth Harmony has yet to release its debut album, but the quintet played tracks from its “Better Together” EP, and a cover of Destiny’s Child’s “Miss Independent Part I,” to a loving audience. Little Mix had the benefit of two albums’ worth of material and a quartet of backup dancers, who helped the U.K. with their sexy shimmying during “Move,” “Salute” and “Wings.” Little Mix has carved out an arrestingly rhythmic sound over a short time period, but its main appeal resides in the cohesion of its four vocalists, summoned on a giddy a cappella version of “How Ya Doin’?” Also of note: the Neon Lights tour features a magician, Collins Key, performing wacky tricks during the downtime between sets.

Lovato’s headlining run continues in North America through Mar. 30.

Neon Lights Tour Diaries: Go Behind the Scenes With Fifth Harmony, Little Mix, & Demi Lovato!

this image is not available

“Being on tour has been amazing and we’re lucky because we have such a support system,” Lauren of 5H explained. “No one is catty. Every time we go on, [Little Mix & Demi Lovato] say ‘good show’ or ‘congrats you did a great job.’ They always tell us they’re rooting for us. It’s a good kind of energy back stage—there’s so much girl power !”

MAJOR FAN LOVE

“The greatest part about being on tour is being able to perform for all my fans and meet all of the young lives that tell me I’ve inspired them,” Demi Lovato revealed.

SERIOUS STYLE

“Glam is my go-to,” 5H-er Normani said as she showed off her rhinestones. “We got to work with a costume designer who’s worked with Katy Perry and actually give our input on what our personal style is. They took that into account and amplified it for our tour costumes!”

SELFIE CENTRAL

Little Mix signed autographs and took selfies with tons of lucky fans before the show! One fan event got to interview them as a part of a competition Little Mix is hosting during the tour. “Two of the girls we spoke to we thought were friends, but they had met each other for the first time through our competition,” Jade said. “It was so sweet to see.”

BACKSTAGE PRANKS

this image is not available

“We do funny stuff all the time,” 5H's Dinah said. “I think they’d definitely call me the biggest prankster. One time I found a cricket and put it in Camila’s shoe!”

HOT GUY ALERT

Little Mix’s back-up dancers are H-O-T. They’re sweet, have abs for days, not to mention they are Little Mix’s biggest fans. “[All the girls] are incredible. They’re really amazing people to work with. There have been other people I’ve worked with that haven’t been so nice, but these girls are like our sisters,” Claudimar Neto, one of the dancers said. Um, who's single?

FUN FOOTWEAR

“I used to rip the heads off all my Barbies when I was little,” Ali of Fifth Harmony revealed. “It’s a coincidence, but my mom jokes that it’s coming full circle, because there are Barbie heads in my shoes!”

AMAZING MEMORIES

“I have ‘OMG I can’t believe I’m here moments’ all the time!” Demi said. “It’s been such an amazing journey and I’m so grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been blessed with. In my head, it’s still surreal.”

“Leigh-Anne nearly got killed on tour!” Perrie of Little Mix said. “There were really big frames on stage during the first show’s dress rehearsals. It was very rushed and hectic. The frames were wobbling as we were singing, and one fell and hit her on the head! As it fell, she whacked her mike into her mouth and it busted her lip! She still did the show!”

Must-have tour snacks? Turkey, peanut butter and cereal! “We eat healthy!” 5H's Camila said. “We have the freedom to do what we want, but it’s definitely smarter for us to be healthy for our voices and because we’re traveling all around in all kinds of crazy weather.”

MAMA'S GIRL!

Mama Thirlwall (Little Mix-er Jade’s mom) joined her on tour for a week! When asked about the experience, she got a little choked up. “I’m sad to leave her!” Little Mix-er Jade’s mom said teary!

“Demi puts quotes up around the backstage area to keep us inspired,” Little Mix's Jesy shared. “The Billie Holiday quote by our dressing room reminds us that we’re all unique and should kick butt in our own way!”

PLENTY OF DEMI-ISMS

In between songs, Demi shared the best advice of all, which paid tribute to her own personal journey. “No matter what you’re dealing with you can get through it,” she told her fans. “I believe in all of you. You guys are so worthy of life! It works if you work it.” Such a warrior!

Neon Lights by Demi Lovato

Songfacts®:

  • Demi penned this synth anthem with Ryan Tedder and Noel Zancanella. The pair, who previously worked with the singer on her 2011 Unbroken track " Who's That Boy? " also produced the tune. Tedder revealed that the idea to produce the song was his own. He stated: "That record we did intentionally because I wanted to... I heard it on her demo-reel and the next day I woke up and the melody was in my head, and I couldn't get it out of my head for two days, that's when I knew."
  • Speaking about Lovato's vocals on the song, Tedder told the UK station Capital FM: "She came in and just ripped it. She, in pop music has one of the biggest ranges, possibly the highest full voice singer I've ever worked with." "She can belt full voice like three octaves above middle C, it's just crazy," Tedder added, "and with complete power and complete control. At the beginning she's singing the lowest note she's ever done, and by the end she's going as high as she's ever gone."
  • The song inspired the name of Lovato's Neon Lights Tour .
  • The Ryan Pallotta-directed video finds Lovato taking a dip in a purple pool of water before she hits the dance floor at an underground rave. As she starts dancing along, the lights go out to show the singer literally glowing, thanks to some neon makeup.

Demi Lovato's Neon Lights Tour Was A Memorable Night For Detroit Fans

March 19, 2014 / 8:17 AM EDT / CW50 Detroit

By: Nagsheen Nassif @Nagsheen

Demi Lovato's Neon Lights Tour has been blowing up cities worldwide. Detroit was no exception as fans lined up hours before the concert to catch a glimpse of Demi during sound check. Demi Lovato is a recording artist, actress, and philanthropist who has been touring to different cities promoting her fourth studio album "Demi". Her opening acts are doing a great job of promoting their songs as well. Demi's Detroit opening acts included Fifth Harmony and Little Mix. Many concert goers were eagerly anticipating those performances too.

During their stop in Detroit, I was lucky enough to be a Brand Ambassador with Clean and Clear who is one of the leading sponsors of the Neon Lights Tour. It was my job to help fulfill fan's dreams of meeting Fifth Harmony.

100 Fans Tested Their Luck to Win!

Before the concert began 100 lucky girls were given the opportunity to sit in a booth behind closed doors and answer sincere questions about how they see themselves and what makes them special. When the video interview concluded each individual had the chance to pull out a card from a bucket and if the card had a sticker on it she was eligible for an opportunity to take a picture with Fifth Harmony at their meet and greet. There were 50 winners and the other 50 contestants were able to be spectators during the meet and greet. The winners' expressions ranged from falling to the floor crying to shaking in excitement! The ones who didn't pick out a card with a sticker were still ecstatic to be able to see Fifth Harmony up close.

During the meet and greet fans were yelling "I love you," "You are all so amazing," "You're my idols," and much more. The girls of Fifth Harmony shouted back, "We love you all too". After Fifth Harmony finished meeting and taking pictures with the 50 lucky winners they surprised everyone! They ran out to the crowd of 50 that lost and began to take selfies with them! It was definitely a memorable night for those 100 girls/guys. Fifth Harmony does whatever it takes to reach out to their fans to make them all feel noticed and special and that's exactly what they did that night!

My personal experience with Fifth Harmony was short but sweet. The minute I walked up to the girls for a picture I felt so welcomed. I told the girls I would be writing a feature blog on them and they began to give me high fives and tell me they loved my blue eyeliner. They were very loving and down to earth as I expected them to be. Overall this was an amazing experience that I will never forget!

Nagsheen Nassif is a graduate senior at Wayne State University studying Media Arts and Studies. She is currently interning at CBS62/CW50 Detroit and is excited to see what the future holds! She has been very involved with Wayne State University's communications department as she worked on various productions as well as hosted a full season of Metro Arts Detroit.

Demi Lovato Launching Neon Lights Tour With Fifth Harmony, Little Mix

"heart attack" singer is getting ready to crisscross america early next year with her new friends from the x factor.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is returning to the road.

The 21-year-old X Factor judge has announced she's teaming up with last year's third place finishers Fifth Harmony for the girl-powered Neon Lights tour. The trek will support her recent self-titled album, which dropped in May, and is named after her latest single, "Neon Lights."

Lovato and the girl-group will be joined by Little Mix , another all-female act that won the U.K. edition of The X Factor in 2011. Cher Lloyd will also be hitting the road.

However, fans will have to wait a little while before they get their chance to see Demi and company in action as the tour isn't scheduled to get rolling until next year due to Lovato's encore stint as a panelist on Simon Cowell 's hit reality competition.
