THE MAVERICKS Announce 2024 North American Tour

The Mavericks have announced a number of new North American tour dates to their spring 2024 schedule, with appearances spanning Fort Worth, Charleston, Milwaukee, and more before the group returns to Europe in April. See below for a list of all previously announced and newly confirmed tour dates.

THE MAVERICKS Announce 2024 North American Tour

Currently making its way through the northwest with stops in Montana, Washington, and Idaho, the musical tour-de-force will have covered much of the continental United States by the close of the year. Upcoming highlights include a two night residency at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with support from Hogslop String Band (Dec. 1) and Maggie Rose (Dec. 2); Sandy Beaches Cruise , which commences Jan. 13 in Fort Lauderdale; and two nights at Charleston Music Hall (Jan. 26 and 27). February and March will see appearances at several marquee venues including the Fox Theatre (Tucson, AZ); the Orpheum Theater (Madison, WI); another double-header at Tannahill’s Music Hall (Fort Worth, TX); plus the band’s long-awaited return to Miami at the iconic Adrienne Arsht Center for the Arts before the group is due back in the UK and Europe in late April.

The Mavericks’ infectious live show, which fuses rock, latin, Tex-Mex, norteño and salsa varieties, has earned the group worldwide recognition as “America’s greatest live dance band.” Fronted by Cuban-American vocalist Raul Malo, whose timeless and inimitable voice NPR Music calls “ one of the best in the U.S. ,” The Mavericks have remained a highly-coveted touring ensemble for over three decades.

In 2021, the genre-defying outfit further expanded its musical palette with the release of its first all-Spanish language album, En Español , which notched #1 debuts on Billboard ’s “Latin Pop Albums” chart, the iTunes and Amazon Latin Music charts, and became the first-ever album landing simultaneously in the Top-10 of the Americana and Latin Music charts. The album has continued to garner positive reception with a wealth of media praise in the United States and Latin America, performances on Austin City Limits (PBS), the Latin Alternative Music Conference , and the Hispanic Heritage Awards ; a nomination alongside Bad Bunny for the Best Independent Latin Album of the Year, and multiple “ Best of Year ” album picks  from the likes of NPR , Rolling Stone , and more that impressively spanned, mainstream, country, Americana, and Latin music lists.

The group is currently on the road in support of its widely-celebrated 10th Anniversary In Time Deluxe Reissue , which includes all 14 original tracks, plus never-before-released single “Tonight Is The Night,” the group’s exquisite take on Glen Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind,” and a rare conjunto version of “Ven Hacia Mi.”

Featuring the mesmerizing vocal display of Raul Malo , the driving swing of drummer Paul Deakin , the masterful playing of guitarist Eddie Perez , and eccentric style of keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden , the GRAMMY, CMA, ACM, and Americana Music lifetime achievement award-winning quartet continues its legacy of crisscrossing musical boundaries with fantastic abandon.

Already known for their distinctive and eclectic Americana / Roots fusion of Alternative & Outlaw Country, Rock, Blues, R&B  and Tejano/Tex-Mex influences, The Mavericks quite appropriately recorded the tracks of  “Moon & Stars”  across the country in  Blackbird Studio (Nashville, Tennessee), Frogville Studios (Santa Fe, New Mexico) and Dockside Studio (Maurice, Louisiana).  The result is a long-awaited album that instantly invokes both a timeless feel of a classic Mavericks release that will fit seamlessly among their most revered career work, while once again challenging genre conventions and pushing the boundaries of their melting pot sound ever forward.

First single and title track  “Moon & Stars (with Sierra Ferrell)”  will be released this Friday, March 1st ( with advance press copies available by request)  and simultaneously launch the album’s  Pre-Save  availability across all major DSPs, and  Pre-Orders  for physical CDs and vinyl. Additional special featured guests on the album will include  Maggie Rose, Nicole Atkins, and the band’s own ‘ Fantastic Five’ member  Max Abrams. Song co-writers with THE MAVERICKS also include Bernie Taupin, Sam Hollander, Wally Wilson, and more.   Watch for additional singles from  “Moon & Stars”  to be released in late March and April, with THE MAVERICKS already giving live previews of select songs in their ongoing live touring and the band’s April/May tour throughout Europe  –  with many more dates to follow throughout the year  (see all announced dates below).   “The Mavericks do what precious few of their contemporaries can… A band conversant in country, jazz, pop and Latin-flavored rhythms, finely honed by its relentless dedication to touring… Raul Malo and his bandmates had just spent about 80 minutes delivering one of their trademark performances packed with fire, feeling and funkiness… Throughout, the Mavericks were reliably kinetic and locked tighter than a bank vault… [and] Malo’s luscious voice wrapped around bilingual lyrics, a riveting anchor amid the musical maelstrom…and the ecstatic howl from the crowd crystallized the night in a single word, repeated at high volume: “More! More! MORE!” …The only true disappointment about any Mavericks gig is that it has to end at some point. The Mavericks are a country and western band that formed in 1989 in Miami, Florida, with a handful of charting albums and singles under their belt.

The Mavericks started as a punk and alternative rock band in Miami, Florida, finding themselves on the same bill as acts such as Marilyn Manson. In 1991, the band was signed by MCA Nashville and their debut studio album “From Hell to Paradise” was released on May 12th 1992. It was a great start for the band with their album peaking at #74 on the Billboard country charts in 1992. Their following album “What a Crying Shame” was released on February 1st 1994, and built their career even further, charting on at No. 6 on the US Billboard Top Country Albums and #54 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart. The highest charting single from this album is “O What a Thrill”, which made it to #18 on the singles chart. “Music for All Occasions” followed suit, with similar success.

It was when the band released their fifth studio album, “Trampoline” on March 10th 1998, which features one of the band’s biggest singles “Dance the Night Away” which reached #4 on the UK Singles Chart. “I’ve Got this Feeling” made it to #27.

The following year, The Mavericks released “Super Colossal Smash Hits of the 90s: The Best of The Mavericks”. The album charted at number 40 in the UK Albums Chart and it was certified Gold. It also made #45 on the US Billboard Top Country Albums Chart.

They released their sixth studio album on September 23rd 2003, which featured a duet with Willie Nelson, called “Time Goes By”. It made it to #32 on the U.S Billboard Top Country Albums Chart. They disbanded at the end of this year, and went on a ten-year hiatus, before coming back on January 21st 2013 with an album called “In Time”. The album received universal acclaim, scoring 86 on Metacritic. It also charted at #39 on the US Billboard 200 Chart and number 8 on the Country charts.

Live reviews

The Mavericks are the most interesting band in the world. I have been a fan for 25 years. Raul Malo has a Velvet Voice and a smile to die for. Eddie Perez plays the guitar like no other and he is as charming as he is handsome. Paul Deakin is the Master of all drummers. He is sweet, and oh so handsome. Jerry Dale McFadden is a classic talent no one like him. When Jerry dances we All Dance! Robert Reynolds has those magic blue eyes and kind smile and a gentle way about him. A man of many talents not only in his musical talents but, in his art. His artwork is truly magnificent! Jay's Cello playing is awesome as is Paul Armstrong on the Trumpet. Michael's playing of the accordion is amazing! Michael also sings and has his own band and plays other instruments. Last but not least is the Great Sax Player Max Abrams. Max is so talented, good looking and sweet! I have been to a few of their thrilling concerts and as always I was on a Maverick high for days. I admit it I would be their # 1 groupie if I could be. I'm the proud administrator of two Mavericks Groups. The Mavericks Rule! and The Raul Malo Fan Group on FB. I want to say to The Mavericks Happy 25 Years of making Amazing Music. 2014 is your 25 Live Tour and boy The Mavericks have been touring and still are. I can't wait to get my next Maverick fix on 11/5/14 in Portsmouth NH Music Hall. Until then I manage my 2 Mavericks sites sharing with others who have The Maverick Fever. Oh, and I sleep with my head phones on and CD playing my many Maverick CD's. Yes I'm Hooked and I'm proud to say The Mavericks Rule!

I had one of the best concrt experiences I've ever had. Raul Malo's voice has no equal and his band leadership was quite obvious generating high energy and great feelings to the audience. I and the roughly 600 attendees were into the music and performance. We were standing dancing, swinging and swaying to the music. So many were singing along to the music. It was quite moving to see the fans enjoying themselves. Sitting next to me was a woman in her 70'S kind of fragile looking, but she was shaking her tail feathers to the upbeat songs "The Mavericks" performed. Two rows ahead of me was a gentleman with a neck brace on who was doing the boogie woogie dancing. It was great for my soul and stirred my soul to the stomp and hollering I did. They were outstanding, and did 3 encores. Each one livelier than the previous ones. I had the feeling they would have done a few more had not the roadie cone out and picked up Raul's giutar. Al I head from folks leaving was "What a Great Concert". I surely will attend again if the right venue presents itself.

Have been to 4 Mavericks concerts in last 2 years and each one was better than previous time. Keep wondering how they can possibly get better, but they do. All of the band members obviously enjoy performing and providing a good time for their fans!

It was apparent from the start the electricity and atmosphere of Austin was going to make for a great concert. The icing on the cake was the guest appearance of Jimmy Vaughan!

I appreciated Raul admonishing the individual who was talking during his solo as it was disturbing to those who wanted to listen to the music, but could have done without Raul's multiple use of "f" word. Also wish Mavericks would start their concerts on time, as all 4 we have attended were at least 20 minutes late beginning. Gets a little tiring for those of us who arrive 1.5 hours in advance to get a good standing place to hear and see the band.

Have been to many concerts over the years but the Mavericks far exceed all others!

Last night at The Winery in Saratoga California ; The Mavericks put forth a show unparalleled in it’s high energy and it’s enthusiastic audience response!!

The Mavericks have been my favorite band for decades and have never disappointed me in concert!! Last night with a dedication of the song “ How Do You Mend a Broken Heart ?” Raul Malo showed a deep empathy for the families of the Las Vegas victims!! His beautiful tenor was deeply moving and carried the audience ‘s heart in his capable hands!!

Later he kept the audience in the palm of his hands with several solos standing alone on the stage!!

A special and wonderful night at a truly magnificent venue!! They put forward a show with all their usual famous wild antics with some very special and memorable moments of great heart!! WONDERFUL NIGHT!!

The Mavericks were awesome as usual. They have added a light show since I had last seen them. This can be distracting depending on where you are sitting. They did a tribute to the victims & the families of the recent mass shootings beginning with the Las Vegas massacre. Jerry was up to his antics & quite enjoyable. Raul did a solo encore & then the band rejoined him for more fun & music! They are so high energy! The horns section plus the accordionist were fantastic & the drummer was unbelievable! I went both nights & would go again tonight if they were in town. Jimmy Vaughn was an added treat last night. Can't go wrong with the Mavericks! Three hours of unforgettable delights!

Fan-friggin-tastic show. So much energy going back and forth between The Mavericks and the audience that it lifted both.

Audience members holding phones above their heads is getting to be a problem at shows. I wish venues would tell the audience not to hold above their heads. If you want to film instead of watching the show, hold it in front of your own face so you don't block the view of others.

But Raul and the others were on point in this show. Will see them whenever I get the chance!! You should too!!!!

I Love the Mavericks and have seen them 3 times now. The energy that they show on stage is very contagious! No other males singing voice compares to Raul Malo.

Eddie Perez’s guitar playing is alway number one. I was in a group of 8 family & friends we had seats but ended up standing and clapping for most of the concert. Their brass section kept the crowd cheering throughout the show.

We were wishing that they had two shows in town instead of just one. We would have all gone to a second show!

dorothy-schroeder-ku’s profile image

Well, the band was fantastic, but the venue SUCKED! Club Regent, you've got no class at all.

For $50 I want a SEAT, not an spot in a middle-aged mosh pit. The sound was lousy, the crowd was obnoxious and the room might as well have been a community bingo hall. Made the old hockey rink sound more like the concert hall.

Maybe the sound was better at the rear of the hall, but who cares! I will NEVER go to a 'concert' at the casino again. What a sham.

darrell-english’s profile image

Kickass! The show was nonstop from beginning to end. The super talented musicians, Raul's ability to belt out gorgeous songs, the energy on stage! My hubby and I were the youngest ones there (39,40)! But most people were up dancing. At one point though we were told to sit down by the usher!! In any case, great acoustics at the Jubiliee; but one day I'd love to see the Mavericks in a smaller venue where I can be closer to the action!

UNBELIEVABLE live show! The Mavericks knocked it out of the park!

Incredible talent with all 9 members of the band.

HIGHLY recommend that you try to see them in a live performance.

HIGH ENERGY!!! Raul has everyone out of their seat!

Only thing I missed was hearing a few more of their original hits. They only played 3 of their earlier hits. Missed hearing more of those.

I would go again and again!

After all, if you can sustain such pleasure indefinitely, why stop? –  Dallas Observer, 02/10/24

The Mavericks: Tiny Desk Concert

When The Mavericks brought their long-running tour to the Tiny Desk, we could hear a well-oiled musical machine that has charmed audiences long enough to earn the band a lifetime achievement award from the Americana Music Association.

From the opening strains of "Back In Your Arms Again," we are treated to one of the best voices in the U.S. — that of Raul Malo. Backed by a smooth shuffle, Malo's voice is propelled by the subtle horn blasts that suggest a Tex-Mex border feel, driven home by the accordion.

"Mujer" is a track from the band's 2020 album, its first album of all-Spanish material, which features the band's personality shifting from Americana shuffles to Mexican wedding boleros.

"Come Unto Me" is a Mavericks chestnut and gives a glimpse into why the band is such a crowd favorite. The song filters that bolero feel of the previous song into a slow burner with a shouted chorus at the end that usually has the crowd on its feet and singing along.

The Mavericks are one of the best live shows out on the road these days and masters at bringing new fans into their fold. This performance gives us all a good idea of how the band weaves that magic.

Any band that manages to survive three decades, seeing its core members go from young adults to veteran musicians is bound to have its swings and cycles.

The Mavericks, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon, has gone through three distinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. An initial period of heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the ‘90s. A long hiatus starting 2003 when the musicians each went their own way. And finally, a triumphant reunion in 2012 which held long enough for them to recently celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary.

Now, The Mavericks are releasing a new album that ushers in the fourth phase of their evolution.

“It's like we've had three different lives,” says Raul Malo, the band’s lead singer and songwriter, “and now this is a whole new beginning. We’re sort of going into uncharted territory. I’m looking forward to it and I’m kind of nervous about it too. It's certainly a new adventure.”

On August 21, The Mavericks officially launch that adventure with the debut of their first-ever, all-Spanish album, released on the band’s own Mono Mundo label. Entitled simply En Español, it is produced by Malo and the band’s long-time collaborator Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Prince, Sheryl Crow). The line-up includes Malo’s fellow Miamian and charter bandmember, Paul Deakin on drums and vibraphone, as well as veteran Jerry Dale McFadden, who joined in 1993. Eddie Perez, a Mexican American guitarist from Los Angeles, is the band’s youngest and newest member, becoming a Maverick in 2003.

The band readily embraced the all-Latin concept, as a team. “It’s a communal project in many ways,” says Malo, “even though I'm leading the charge,”

Although all 12 tracks are in Spanish, as the title suggests, the collection represents a diversity of musical styles and cultural traditions, from tender boleros to brassy mariachi to reimagined Afro-Cuban classics. Seven of the tunes are familiar gems drawn from the vast Latin American songbook, while five are originals written or co-written by Malo.

Like the band’s entire body of music, this one album cannot be boxed into a single category. The songs are as diverse as Latin America itself, and as cohesive as the ideal of the American melting pot. To season this rich musical paella, The Mavericks add their signature country/rock/Tex-Mex flavors and a refreshing spontaneity to the mix.

En Español flips the band’s usual fusion formula, which adds a striking assortment of genres – salsa, ska, norteño, mariachi, and much more – to its sturdy rock/country base. Now, the foundation is solidly Latin with streaks of irreverent rock and twangy guitars running through it, all branded with the unmistakable Mavericks style.

“This album, to me, celebrates all those cultures that are so beautiful and so vibrant,” says Malo, who was part of the diverse ensemble known as Los Super Seven in the early 2000s. “I'm proud of this record for that. I think it’s a very inclusive record. Because this story is not just my story, it's the story of a lot of Latinos.”

The idea for an album consisting entirely of Latin music has been percolating in Malo’s mind for several years. The concept crystalized toward the end of the band’s extended separation, during which Malo was performing and making albums as a solo artist. But even when he was on his own, he never conceived of recording an all-Spanish album without his band.

“I was doing this solo stuff and I thought, ‘If The Mavericks ever get back together, I would love to do this project with them. I think The Mavericks would make a great album in Spanish.’ “

In 2012, the band finally did get back together, and started touring and recording as a group again. In 2019, they celebrated their 30th anniversary with a successful tour that was unfortunately interrupted earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While the tour was suspended, work on the new album continued.

The inspiration for this labor of love is rooted in the immigrant experience of the band’s founder. He was christened Raúl Francisco Martínez-Malo Jr., the son of Cuban exiles who was born and raised in the stimulating immigrant environment of Miami’s Little Havana.

His parents, Raul Sr. and Norma, both came to the United States in the early 60s, fleeing Fidel Castro’s communist revolution. They met after arriving in Miami, got married and bought a home in the shadow of the old Orange Bowl, west of downtown. The hub of the growing clan was the abode of Malo’s maternal grandfather, who himself had immigrated from Spain to Cuba, later bringing his family to Florida.

As Malo entered adolescence in the 1970s, the Latin music industry was flourishing in the United States. Pop and folk music from many countries flooded Latin communities. Recordings from many countries were distributed domestically by major labels, sold in neighborhood discotecas, and broadcast on television and radio via a booming network of Spanish-language media.

Malo’s musical milieu was a mind-expanding cultural mashup.  At home, there was a family piano to play at family gatherings, and his grandfather regaled guests with his “beautiful baritone,” Malo recalls.  And there was a stream of music always in the air. Songs by Cuba’s venerable Omara Portuondo, Mexico’s romantic Trio Los Panchos, and brash mariachi superstar Vicente Fernandez. But his father also loved Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, while his mother exposed him to the refined art of opera and classical music.

The budding musician soaked in the sounds, unlike many first-generation teenagers who reject their parents’ music as corny or old-fashioned.

“I was never one of those kids who were like, ‘Ah, I hate that music,’” says Malo. “I liked it all, and I would take it all in. To me, it was just part of the vocabulary, part of the DNA.”

With a lifetime of music to choose from, picking songs for the new album could have posed an overwhelming task. But for Malo, it felt like a natural selection.

“To me, the criterion really was pretty simple,” he says. “The songs all mean something to me, personally. You’ve got to remember too, I’m not only thinking about what I want to sing and what I think I’d sound good singing. I also have to consider what would sound good with The Mavericks. Because we’re a pretty versatile band, but let’s face it, we’re not a salsa band, and we’re not pretending to be mariachis either. Those are entirely different things.”

about2_edited.jpg

Among the first songs Malo selected was the introspective ballad “Me Olvidé de Vivir” (I Forgot to Live), originally written in French and popularized in 1978 by Spanish crooner Julio Iglesias, one of the biggest stars of all time in Latin pop music. The tune – about a singer’s regret for lost time in the manic quest for fame – was a favorite of Malo’s beloved grandfather.

As fans might expect, The Mavericks did not record straight-up covers of golden oldies. The songs may be sung in Spanish, but the musical language is all Mavericks.

“We had to tailor the arrangements to what The Mavericks do,” says Malo. “That was the trick, finding the balance of playing these beautiful songs without trying to imitate familiar renditions. I think that’s the best way to pay tribute to the music that we love – by doing it our way.”

Asked to explain what “our way” actually means, the normally articulate bandleader grasps for insight into his own creative process.

“Man, I wish that I could put a method into words, like that was on purpose,” he says. “I can’t say that it was. Sometimes I roll a joint and I mess with the sounds, I get the right guitar and sometimes an arrangement comes out, or sometimes a whole song. But sometimes nothing comes out. So it's not as methodical as you might think. If it sounds good, I go with it.  “I’ve learned to trust myself a little bit.” In composing the five new tracks, Malo trusted his instincts, both as songwriter and as a Maverick.

“I think I had one of them written,” he says, “and then the others, I just thought it would be fun to see what I could come up with, what I could write, and just give it a shot. After all, if you're a songwriter, you're a songwriter. Musically, if you really listen to them, it's not that different from what The Mavericks do normally. It really isn’t.”

“Poder Vivir,” the first original song in the sequence, at first blush appears to be a simple song about lost love. The two-word title suggests much more.

“I had this phrase and melody that just kept playing in my head,” says Malo about how he wrote the song. “I wasn’t quite sure what it meant exactly, or what I was going to say, but somehow it felt right to start the song with those words… After many conversations and late nights out on the road, the song kind of wrote itself. We wanted it to be conversational and simple in the end, and that’s what we got.”

That, and a killer final verse that makes the song what Malo intended it to be: “a bit philosophical and wise.”

A veces la vida nos hace pensar

Que el mundo no cambia sino para mal

Son solo momentos, también pasarán

En fin, ni la muerte nos marca un final

Writing the lovely “Recuerdos” – about the ethereal memories left after love ends – came faster and easier.

“This one was a lot of fun to write,” Malo recalls. “We were under the gun a little bit, trying to finish the record. We were going into the studio on a Sunday. We got home from our show at the Ryman on Saturday night, and we had to be at the studio by noon. Alejandro met me at my house at 9:00 AM. I had coffee ready. I had a groove. I had a melody. And by 12:30, the Mavericks were recording this song at the legendary Blackbird Studios”

about1_edited_edited.jpg

Regardless of the songwriting process–quick or labored, solo or collaborative–the resulting five new numbers (including “Mujer,” “Pensando en Ti,”and “Suspiro Azul.”) clearly meet the high bar of blending seamlessly with the established standards.

This is not the first time Malo has written his own songs in Spanish. He included four Castilian compositions on “Today,” his 2001 debut solo album. But he’s still honing his bilingual craft.

For the new album, he listened to old boleros and closely studied his ancestors’ mother tongue, known as the language of love. He also enlisted the help of longtime collaborator and fellow Cuban Alejandro Menéndez Vega, the Mavericks’ director and videographer who’s also a writer and poet.

“I would try writing by myself, but I didn't want to use just common language,” says Malo. “I wanted to work with someone who has a real clear command of the language.”

On this album, Malo joins the rarefied ranks of the esteemed Spanish-language composers of seven timeless tracks. Of these widely known standards, two are from Cuba, two from Mexico, and one each from Argentina, Italy, and France via Spain. Several have been recorded dozens of times, but Malo used as reference the versions with which he was most familiar.

For example, “Sombras Nada Más” was originally an Argentine tango about a desperate lover who threatens to slice his veins slowly and bleed out to prove his love to the woman who spurns him. The song was a huge smash in 1967 by Mexican mariachi star Javier Solís, but Malo was enamored of the lesser known version by elegant Spanish singer Rocío Durcal.

The romantic bolero “Sabor a Mí,” one of the two Mexican songs on the album, is another international smash with multiple renditions recorded over the years. Malo was most attuned to the hit version by U.S. pop singer Eydie Gormé with Mexico’s Trio Los Panchos. The other Mexican tune, “No Vale la Pena,” is a much lighter take on ending a relationship by flatly telling your ungrateful partner, as the title says, “it’s not worth it.” The song was written by Juan Gabriel, another beloved star who Malo considers “one of my favorites.” The Maverick’s mariachi-flavored rendition features guest artist Flaco Jimenez, San Antonio’s world-renowned accordion player.

The two Cuban numbers – “La Sitiera” and “Me Voy a Pinar del Río” – open and close the album like tropical bookends. But it almost didn’t happen that way.

“La Sitiera,” now the album’s featured track, almost didn’t make the cut. An early version was recorded on the band’s first day in the studio, but the results were disappointing.

“That one didn’t hold up,” recalls Malo, with some lingering frustration. “Shoot, we had played it live and it just rocked. But that first recording was not even close. So it just sat forever in the junk pile.”

Later, with some spare studio time near the end of recording, the song was resuscitated, and it jumped back to life with a jolt.

“I knew that once we had that new version, it was going to make the record. It just sounded right, and you can feel it in the studio. Then we added the strings, … and I said, “Guys, this has to open the record.”

“La Sitiera” is a traditional guajira, or Cuban country song, that has been recorded by top performers, including Omara Portuondo and Celia Cruz. But its sweet melody, longing lyrics, and gentle rhythms are entirely revolutionized by The Mavericks. The track opens with Malo’s twangy Fender guitar, with delay pedal and reverb, adding an eerie undertone. The number then moves into a lush passage with horns and strings, culminating in a thunderous crescendo evoking Phil Spector’s “wall of sound.”

"We have a million versions of that song that have been done the traditional way,” says Malo. “But these are The Mavericks. I know my guys and I know what they can play, and when the band jams, it’s a special thing. So I thought, let's arrange this so that it showcases, not only the song, but also this arrangement that lets the band do what it does best.”

The closing track, “Me Voy a Pinar del Río,” is a paean to the natural beauty of Cuba’s western-most province, relatively untouched by tourism. In tone and topic, it is polar opposite from the opening. This track is joyful, irresistible and danceable.

The song is played in a much more straightforward fashion, but it also went through a surprise twist in the studio. For the song’s guitar solo, the usual Cuban tres was replaced by the charango, a small Andean guitar almost never used in Cuban music. The instrumental switch happened by serendipity.

Malo, without The Mavericks, was experimenting in the studio one day with members of a new Cuban rock band, Sweet Lizzy Project, whom he had met while filming the 2017 PBS special, “Havana Time Machine.” Malo later brought the Cuban band to Nashville, recruiting lead singer Lissett Diaz as co-writer and background singer on the new album.  On that day at Nashville’s Blackbird Studios, Malo was strumming on the charango while encouraging Sweet Lizzie to join in on an early take of what would become the album’s closing track.

When it came time for the guitar solo, Malo invited the band’s producer and lead guitarist, Miguel Comas, to take a crack at it. But the first take didn’t take. “He was playing a guitar solo and I was like, ‘Dude, that sounds like Eric Clapton. That's not what we need."

So Malo handed the little charango to the long-haired Cuban rocker, who immediately protested, in Spanish, that he had never played the instrument before. But Malo persisted, and it paid off. The spontaneous Sweet Lizzy performance can be heard on the finished track, perhaps the world’s first Cuban charango solo on record.

It’s no coincidence that the album ends with this positive note about going home to Pinar del Río, where Malo’s father is from.

“It's part of the journey and the longing to be there,” says Malo of his parents’ island homeland. “It’s the longing for that beautiful forbidden fruit which we have gone without for half a century, due to politics. It’s a way to view this journey, which would be a fun one, if we all went on it together someday.”

Seven songs from the Mavericks’ stellar new album Mono made their way into the Miami band’s two-hour show Wednesday at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theater, providing ample proof of how the group’s country-meets-the-Caribbean sound has matured over nearly 25 years.

The Mavericks on Making ‘Mono,’ Life on the Road & More

Trending on Billboard

The third night of a  U.S. tour  that runs through late July — the Mono Mundo trek started in Europe — the Mavericks’ show was front-loaded with Mono material heavily accented with Jamaican rhythms of the early ’60s, specifically ska and its forefather, blue beat. Easing seamlessly into the band’s vintage-sounding swing and jump R&B material, the band sounded more like a product of New Orleans than south Florida. Through it all, leader Raul Malo added varied guitar work that alternates between classic twang, surf music and, on a nylon-stringed acoustic, the warmly stinging tone associated with Willie Nelson .

Album Review: The Mavericks Show Off Their Splashy, Seasoned Spirit on ‘Mono’

Known for the risky marriage of island rhythms, Latin horn riffs and traditional country — the unique sonic references of first-generation Cuban immigrants tethered to dyed-in-the-wool Americana — Malo and his seven musicians push those bonds further into a sound that is generally buoyantly delightful. “Summertime (When I’m With You),” which set the mood for the entire evening, was the sound of a great band having fun onstage and worked well alongside songs with similar aspirations, among them: “O What a Thrill” from the early 1990s and more recent work such as 2013’s “Back In Your Arms Again.”

The back half of the 21-song concert favored older, more straightforward material, with Malo’s expansive and beautifully controlled tenor front and center. A highlight: “I Should Have Been True,” which showcased Malo at his most Roy Orbison -inspired.

The Maverick Movement: Meet the Industry Movers Working Together to Steer the Careers of Madonna, U2, Britney and More

While  Mono ,  the Mavericks’ eighth studio album in the 24 years they have been recording, is another step forward musically, its lyrical substance hews close to the rest of the band’s songbook — bookends of love and broken hearts and all the steps between those two emotional states. But deep down, it’s really the beat that drives this band. And even with back-to-back love-lorn ballads (“Sabor A Mi” and “Here Comes the Rain”) and a grinding blues (“The Only Question Is”), the band never strayed from the sound of a festive party.

“All Night Long” “Summertime (When I’m With You)” “Stories We Could Tell” “O What a Thrill” “Back In Your Arms Again” “Fall Apart” “Pardon Me” “What am I Supposed to Do” “What a Crying Shame” “I Should Have Been True” “Foolish Heart” “Out the Door” “The Only Question Is” “Because of You” “As Long as There’s Loving Tonight” “Dream River” “Here Comes the Rain” “Sabor a Mi” “Every Little Thing About You” “Dance in the Moonlight” “All Over Again”
