Mariveles: Exploring a Town Rich in History and Adventure in Bataan

Mariveles: Exploring a Town Rich in History and Adventure in Bataan

If you are planning a trip to the northern part of Luzon, you might want to consider a day trip to Mariveles, Bataan.  Known for being the first petrochemical industrial estate and hosts the country’s first economic zone, this first class municipality is situated in a cove at the southern tip of the Bataan Peninsula.  It is also comprised of 18 barangays.

Map of Mariveles, Bataan Photo by: Magalhães /Wikimedia Commons

There are two stories surrounding the name of the municipality. One interesting story is the one about the forbidden love of a woman with the name Maria Velez and a priest who was from Manila. It was said that the two run away together and were led to the northern tip of the peninsula. Conversely, the other story is that the town was named such because of the abundance of anchovies in the municipality. Its name was first called “Maraming Dilis”, the Tagalog term for abundant anchovies. It was shortened to Maridilis and later became Mariveles.

Places of Interest

Tarak ridge.

This is the ideal destination for adventurers looking to test their endurance in reaching the summit of one of the several peaks of Mt. Mariveles. At an altitude of 1,006 meters above-sea level, this is considered a major and challenging climb because of its trails. It starts with a gradual ascent on paved and dirt roads and as you progress, you will encounter upward slopes and narrow paths. Then the rest of the climb is a series of uphills and downhills to the resting point, the Papaya River. After, the trek becomes difficult because of the steep trails. There are two campsites to choose from. From the peak, you can watch the beautiful sunset and if you plan to camp out, you can wait for the awesome sunrise.

While in Mariveles, there are several beaches in town like the rocky but clean Sisiman Beach, the pinkish sand of Lusong Beach and Agwawan Beach. Sisiman Beach boasts of white sand, although not as fine as the sands in Boracay. However, the rock formations there are worth seeing. Lusong Beach is not as touristy and here, you can enjoy your time away from the noisy crowd. If it is alright for you to swim in a beach with other visitors, Mattel Beach is the destination for you.

Mariveles Zero Kilometer Marker

In 1942, thousands of American and Filipino soldiers who were Prisoners of War walked hundreds of kilometers to Capas, Tarlac and around 10,000 lost their lives. This marker is one of the several markers that can be found in different parts of Bataan to commemorate the heroism of these soldiers and their sacrifices during the war.

Balon Anito

This is where people, especially the elderly, go to enjoy the therapeutic effects of this hot spring. Also referred by many as the Dead Volcano, visitors frequent this place just to dip their feet in the hot spring on the mouth of the volcano.

How to Get There

Going to Bataan is easy and you can choose from three options: land, air and water. Accessing the province by land is the most common practice by locals and visitors since it is just a short trip from Manila. There are buses plying to Bataan and passing by Mariveles. It can also be accessed by car. Two international airports are also located near the province, Clark International Airport and the Subic Bay International Airport. If you plan to go by sea, you can ride a ferry from Roxas Boulevard to the Diosdado Macapagal Ferry Terminal in Orion, Bataan and reach your destination in about 45 minutes.

A Day Trip Guide To Mariveles, Bataan

' src=

Last weekend, I returned to Bataan for the third time and went as far as Mariveles, a municipality in the southern tip of Bataan peninsula. Formerly known as Village of Kamaya, Mariveles has 18 barangays (villages) and a population of around 127,000 (based on the 2015 consensus). Probably the most popular tourist destination in this part of Bataan is a group of coves called, Five Fingers , named so due to their coastal features similar to the interdigital folds of a hand, at least when you check its aerial view. But we are not going to talk about Five Fingers, I am going to show you what else you can see in Mariveles for a day.

How to get to Mariveles

There are 3 ways in which you can reach Mariveles: drive, take a bus, ride a ferry. Travel time by land takes 3 to 4 hours.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

What to see in Mariveles

A few weeks prior, I searched for some of the places that we could visit. I did the due diligence of checking Google maps for each of their location so we don’t go around aimlessly. The plan is to go to the farthest location then drive back so by the time we’re ready to go home, travel time wouldn’t be as long. Here are the key places that we visited.

Bataan Death March Zero Kilometer Marker

When you visit Bataan, you might notice the several kilometer markers on the road, most of them along MacArthur highway. These are not just any ordinary markers but ones that hold a historical significance. In 1942, over 60,000 to 80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of wars walked—a great number of them to their death—along the 160-km stretch of road from Bataan to Pampanga. This point in history is called, the Bataan Death March , one if not the most terrible of atrocities in recollection during the Japanese occupation.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

There are 138 markers, 100 of which can be found in Bataan. The remaining markers can be seen in Pampanga (31) and Tarlac (7). There are two Zero KM markers in Bataan, one in Bagac and another one in Mariveles. The marker that we visited is in the Freeport Town of Mariveles, sitting just beside a Jollibee branch. I know the story of Bataan death march from reading the book, Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides years ago. Because of this, I didn’t feel right about taking a selfie in the monument, hence I just stopped to take a picture of the marker.

Panoypoy Cove

Indubitably, the most beautiful spot we visited on this day trip is the Panoypoy Cove, also known as the Batanes of the West. It can be found inside a resort called Claubel, weird name, which I’m pretty sure is two names merged into one (maybe Claude and Annabel? Who knows?!). If Claubel is too hard for you to remember, then ask people about “Hawla Beach”, another name for this resort. Why does it have another name? Go figure.

There is a 100-peso ($1.88) entry fee per head and they will tell you that it’s required to rent one of their cottages for ₱500 ($9.39). We had no intention of going swimming or staying there for long, we only wanted to take pictures of the cove. We begged the attendants to let us in without paying the cottage. It took some convincing but they finally let us through. It turns out that we really won’t be needing the cottage because we decided to skip the beach.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

W e took the path that goes down to the viewing point of the cove. There, on top of the hills, you can see the amazing view of Panoypoy Cove. I haven’t been to Batanes so I can’t make a valid comparison, but I was impressed by the view nonetheless.

My friends and I had to do a little hike across the hill to get to a better spot. I knew that there’s some hiking involved but I wanted to be “extra” and wore a dress and a pair of gladiator sandals.  Ill-dressed for the task but highly determined, I started climbing the rocky hill with one of my friends, Patit. We noticed that the mountain is bald and dry, the grasses are more brown than green. Patit wondered what happened to the trees, I echoed her sentiment. I took extra caution, carrying my tripod on my left shoulder, my brown bag on my right, as I walked on the slightly moist stony ground. The trek was short and doesn’t take a lot of effort, at least if I would compare it with all of my previous climbs. Before long, we were already on the other side to gaze at this view.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

When everyone else has gathered to this side of the hill, I called for a group photo. As you can see, my friends are as extra as me, lol. By the time we decided to leave, I was nearing dehydration because of the sun. If you’re ever thinking of going there, make sure to bring water and slather on the sunblock.

Balon Anito

Have you ever been to the mouth of a volcano? Well, you can easily do that in Mariveles by visiting Balon Anito. The locals call it a hot spring, but in reality, it is the mouth of a dormant volcano. True enough, you can see bubbles coming up on the water’s surface. The water is the color of moss and the crater itself is just the size of a regular swimming pool for kids.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

The spring is in the back of Balon Anito Barangay Hall and basketball court. People go there to dip their toes because of the alleged healing properties of the water. I entertained thoughts of dipping my feet but the idea of wetting my sandals changed my mind. I did play with water a little with my hands just to know if the water is warm, it is but not as hot as I thought it’d be.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

There were no other tourists when we went there. A local told us that if we don’t know how to swim then it’s best not to do it because the spring may be small, but it is deep.

San Miguel Lighthouse & San Miguel Peak

The smallest lighthouse I have ever seen can be found on the tip of Sisiman. San Miguel Lighthouse lies on the foot of a small mountain called, San Miguel Peak. My friend, Pancake, climbed this mountain with her son on her previous visit. By the time we reached the place, the sun was at its highest, taking out any thoughts of conquering the peak.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

Going to the lighthouse entails a few minutes of walk over a dirt road sandwiched between San Miguel Peak and Sisiman Bay. There are small rundown cottages on the side of the bay, empty saved for one that looks like it’s being used as a place of residence.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

Walking at around 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon heat can be oppressing, thus I used my umbrella. It only succeeded in shading the upper part of my body, I had to endure the heat on my feet. At last, we reached the white lighthouse that no visitors are allowed to climb. It looks so small and lonely. On the back of the lighthouse, somebody pitched a tent. I looked at it and wondered how could anyone stay in there under the intense heat of the sun.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

I went down to the shore bedecked with huge boulders and rocks to take some photos. The wind that was blowing was a small mercy, but it was not enough to make us want to stay longer. My guesstimate is that we were only there for no more than 15 or 20 minutes.

Where to eat in Mariveles

For our lunch, we went to Pupung Grill, a Filipino restaurant. It can be found on the side of Roman Superhighway facing the Mariveles Bay. They serve Filipino food but the area in which we were seated had a Japanese theme going on. I was momentarily disoriented but the place looks decent so I guess, it was no big deal.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

We went there after having coffee, thus we were not starving and had the patience to wait for the food. We ordered several dishes for sharing, my most favorite of which is the sinigang na bangus and ensaladang talong. Price range plays between ₱200 to 500 ($3.76 – $9.39).

Address : Ave of the Philippines, Freeport Area of Bataan

Where to get coffee in Mariveles

There is not a lot of cafes in Mariveles to my disappointment. On googling we found Iwahori Coffeeshop, the in-house cafe of Iwahori Guesthouse. It claims that it offers healthy coffee, I was naturally curious. We entered a rather drab looking place, small and aesthetically unimpressive. It doesn’t look anything like the cafes that you can find in the city.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

I ordered a cup of hot latte ₱60 ($1.13), which according to the barista is their bestseller. I was disappointed to find out that they are offering instant coffee from a product that came from Malaysia. It’s not that I don’t drink instant coffee, it’s just that it’s supposed to be a cafe, of course, I would expect that at the least they’d serve brewed coffee. There was nothing spectacular about the latte that it got me wondering how it became a bestseller. Nonetheless, I finished my cup in peace, not the best but I’ve had worse. At least the staff was nice to us. We asked them what else we could see in Mariveles but all of their suggestions, save for Five Fingers, were already included in our itinerary.

Address : 156 Lakandula St. Poblacion

We couldn’t find Sisiman Beach, our supposed last stop. It was a little before 3:00 p.m., too early to go home, but that’s what we ended up doing when somewhere along the way it started raining hard.  The trip back to the crowded city took longer considering the traffic. Nevertheless, we all agreed, it has been a successful day trip.

This trip pushed through at the request of Pancake who is leaving for Ireland soon. It’s been a long time since our group went somewhere together, it was nice to have a sort of a last hurrah before one of us leave the country for good.

Where To Stay In Taipei [Happy Taipei Hostel Review]

I have never heard of Mariveles before. The place looks great. It is small yet has so many spots to visit. The death March reminded me of the Hellfire pass in Thailand. Broke my heart. But the happy part is the beautiful cove. Is there no other way to visit the cove except going there through the resort? That’s a little inconvenient I guess. Is it a private cove?

It’s not a popular spot in the Philippines but it has the potential to be the next best destination.

Totally love your pictures with the girls! I have been to Mariveles, Bataan to climb a mountain. That’s Mt. Tarak, a major climb that takes 10 hours back and forth. Bataan is really one of the historical places especially during the American occupation. It’s also a great place to visit every April 9, during Araw ng Kagitingan since Bataan played a huge role during the war.

Mariveles seems to have some really awesome spots to enjoy. Panoypoy Cove particularly appears to be very beautiful cove. I like your snaps in particular, with the blue waters surrounding the green mainland. And I am sure the village tour would help bring the tourists closer to the culture of the region.

I’ve not heard of Mariveles before but it seems like a marvelous place.. sorry for he silly pun..hehe..Also didn’t hear about the Bataan Death March..that was quite sad. That view from Panoypoy Cove is gorgeous and interesting to know about the dormant volcano Balon Anito . Thanks for sharing all the information on how to get there!

I totally echo your emotions about the instant coffee served to you in the cafe! Even i prefer heading to quaint cafes to get authentic taste in tea or coffee so I understand what you say. Thanks for a well written blog!

When In Manila Search

Bataan’s mariveles five fingers: a breathtaking destination you need to know now.

As someone who’s called Bataan home for most of her formative years, the invitation to visit my hometown comes up quite often with college friends and co-workers. To my chagrin, I would often be met by the following questions:

“Bataan? Ang layo naman sa Manila nu’n!” (Bataan? But that’s so far from Manila!)

“Ano ba ang makikita sa Bataan?” (What is there exactly to see in Bataan?)

Many of my clueless yet well-meaning friends from Manila seem to think that Bataan is some distant backwater where one would spend half a day traveling by car or would need a plane to reach, while they have no problem making plans in places like Zambales, which is actually farther and the towns more distantly spaced.

Mariveles Bataan 30

Of course, I would point out the errors in their misconceptions by saying, a. Bataan is only two hours and thirty minutes away from Manila by car, and b.) There are lots of sights to see in Bataan, actually, mainly beaches. Bataan is after all a peninsula, meaning the entire province is surrounded by water. And though its tourism flies slightly under the radar, it would be completely false to say that there is nothing to see in this nature-filled province. This small peninsula would seem to have it all, from mountains worth hiking, to waterfalls that are calling to be explored, and everything else in between. To the outdoorsy types, Bataan is a quick getaway from Manila to fulfill your craving for adventure!

Mariveles Bataan 4

Mariveles is a seaside town in Bataan, known for its freeport area where designer bags and other products are being manufactured. But there’s more to their industrial zone, like the Five Fingers , a series of coves to the west of Mariveles, that look like five fingers spread out.

Mariveles Bataan 8

Mariveles’ Five Fingers have recently gone viral on social media, and has even sparked interest among media outlets, hailing it as the next adventure destination. There is good reason to explore the  Five Fingers , its proximity to Manila being one of them. In fact, you can even clearly see Manila Bay from the coast of Mariveles! While there are no ferry services as of the moment, there are talks of reviving the ferry shuttling to and from Manila Bay, which would only last about 30 to 45 minutes.

Mariveles

Our tour for the weekend is Mariveles local Rustan Jalos Padua, a petrol safety engineer by day, and founder of the community page Bataan Weather Page on Facebook by night. It was his page that first published the beautiful drone shots of the Mariveles Five Fingers, which we also wrote about here . Since then, he has been getting non-stop inquiries about what has been dubbed, “The Batanes of the West” , so he decided to form a tour group that would show visitors the natural and untouched beauty of these coves.

We met up at a fast food joint in Mariveles, which was right beside the zero-kilometer marker for the World War II Death March, another landmark in the town. After a few words on the historical monument, we headed off to Porto del Sol, the jump-off point to the coves, boarding a local  bangka .

So, what exactly can you do at the Five Fingers? Here are just some of the land and water adventures we took on:

Island Hopping

Mariveles Bataan 7

As implied by the name, there are five of the “fingers” or coves to be explored, as well as nearby rock structures. Bataan is also home to migratory  pawikans , or sea turtles, with the Pawikan Conservation Center as the main sanctuary for these endangered creatures. If you are lucky, you can witness the hatching of pawikan eggs, which are in season around January-February. The hatchlings are released to the sea, and if they survive their sea journey, they will always come back to where they came from as mature  pawikans , laying their own eggs in return as the cycle repeats.

An action-packed trip calls for a hefty lunch break, and we had just that at the Talain Cove, with a sumptuous boodle feast, as we were served the freshest catch of the day — crab, shrimp, and steamed rice, with fresh watermelon to finish the meal off.

Mariveles Bataan 24

The tour wasn’t over yet, as we had one last stop to make: the famed “Batanes of the West”, where you can watch the sunset overlooking the horizon. It’s the perfect ending to an awe-filled day.

10 Best BATAAN TOURIST SPOTS (Heritage & Beyond)

 alt=

I was back in Bataan, through an invite from the Tourism Office to cover Padyakan sa Bataan as well as to explore tourist spots and historical sites in the province.

It was a year ago when I also traveled within the province through a Press trip invitation from the Tourism Regional Office. At that time, we explored the provinces of Pampanga and Bataan. Since I came back to the province, I decided to update this blog post to include the sites that we’ve explored during our recent trip.

Here are the tourist spots and attractions you shouldn’t miss in Bataan.

1. Bataan Tourism Center

This should be your first stop in exploring the province. Bataan Tourism Center will provide you all the necessary information about attractions to visit, activities, and also food to enjoy. This tourism information hub is open every day to cater to the needs and answer the questions of every tourist.

Bataan Tourism Center

Bataan Tourism Center

Bataan Tourism Center also houses an Audio-Visual Room, Exhibit Hall, and the Provincial Tourism Office. This is the first stop to get all the necessary information needed for the trip, and also the last to buy your pasalubong .

Here’s a sneak peek of Bataan Tourism Center.

2. Bataan World War II Museum

After having our lunch at Trihouse Restaurant , we traveled to our first historical site for the day – Bataan World War II Museum.

The place is located within the vicinity of Balanga Elementary School. So we passed through the school grounds until we reached the two-story structure. The museum serves as a tribute to all Filipino and American soldiers who sacrificed their lives last World War II  during the Fall of Bataan, followed by the historic Bataan Death March.

Before we even entered the museum, Sir Alan Valbuena of Bataan Tourism showed us the “Surrender site marker,” a life-size statue of Major General Edward King when he signed the document stating that they were surrendering the Philippines to Japan on April 9, 1942.

In the museum, we were greeted by the staff. Before we could even explore the memorabilia of the war inside, they let us watch a video first detailing the story of how Bataan has fallen to the hands of the Japanese invaders.

Bataan World War II Museum 1

It was an interesting video showing the timeline of the history and explaining the details in the simplest way possible.

Bataan World War II Museum

On the second floor, we’ve witnessed the riveting images of the people and children who suffered during the war. Beside this is a room dedicated to the memorabilia of the former first lady- Luz Banzon Magsaysay, wife of former President Ramon Magsaysay. It is filled with photos, clothes, furniture, and personal belongings of the former first lady.

Location:  Jose Basa St, City of Balanga, Bataan

3. Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor

I remember we were about to visit the Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor during my press trip in Bataan last year with the Regional Tourism Office, but that didn’t push through. During that time, there was a huge event, and people were all walking going to Mt. Samat, and they didn’t allow vehicles.

This time, finally, I was able to visit this famous site in the province. It took us about 20 minutes of land travel before we arrived at the site.  It was then that I realized that the cross was huge! And there are a lot of visitors at that time.

Mt Samat Shrine of Valor

Masyadong maliwanag hahaha

Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor was built in 1970 as a memorial cross for the sacrifices and bravery of Filipinos who fought and perished during World War II.

There is an elevator inside this huge cross that would take you up for you to enjoy the 360-degree view of the Bataan Peninsula. It was a good way to enjoy the beauty of the province as well as to reflect and pay respect to the heroes of the past war.

Location: Pilar, Bataan

4. Zero Kilometer Marker of Bataan Death March

If you’re looking for it, this is just located beside the Jollibee .

Zero Kilometer Marker of Bataan Death March

In this same spot was the start of the Bataan Death March on April 10, 1942, where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers perished. This shrine is a way to pay respect to all of our heroes who sacrificed for our freedom against the Japanese invaders.

Location:  Ave of the Philippines, Mariveles, 2105 Bataan

To understand more about the Bataan Death March, here’s an explainer video from Simple History.

5. Sisiman Lighthouse

We weren’t able to visit the picturesque Sisiman Lighthouse, but I’ve already visited the place during my travel to Five Fingers Cove a couple of years ago.

Sisiman lighthouse is lightless after typhoon Pedring destroyed it in 2011, but it’s still a sight to behold, especially during sunset.

6. Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach

It was a couple of years ago when I traveled to Mariveles to visit the booming summer destination at that time – Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach.

The experience can not be considered island hopping because there was no island separated from the mainland that we explored. We hopped from one cove to another. Five Fingers Cove’s name was derived from its look on the map. When you try to check Google Maps, the location is similar to your fingers.

Five Fingers Cove Mariveles Bataan

Mataas yan. talon ka? hehehe

This is a total adventure and summer getaway. We explored beaches, cliffs, and rock formations that it made me realized that hey, there is such a place like this in Mariveles? I was amazed by the natural charm and beauty.

Laki Beach Mariveles Bataan

Our last stop was Laki Beach, where we had our lunch and spent the entire afternoon. The beach was pristine, and we had a relaxing experience. I just hope that tourists will continue to protect this beach as I’ve recently been getting messages from readers that Laki Beach’s waste problem is getting worse. Well, that made me sad. I hope the owners would do some measures to protect the beach, and maybe they should also tap the help of the government to protect the beach.

 7. Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar

I remember the first time I visited Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan, a few years ago.

It was our company’s team building. I was just a regular working dude then, never in my life have I imagined that I would be a travel blogger. Seriously. I remember I was amazed by those old structures, but my appreciation has no depth. I find the structures beautiful, but my mind was not creative enough to appreciate its history. I’m glad that I’ve grown these past years.

The most memorable for me on that first visit was all the good times I had with my workmates until we got drunk. I had those moments when in the middle of the night, I would look out the window and see some “Guardia sibil” walking or women in Filipiniana. Then, I had that split-second confusion, Did we travel back in time? Was that a ghost? Then the logical part of my brain would kick in, “Oh, they’re the staff of Las Casas.

After five years, I’m back at Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar, as part of the travel writers invited by the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 3 for a press trip. And I can say that I am back as a grown person, better and matured, from a usual dude to a travel enthusiast and writer who appreciates and puts more value on culture and heritage.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar

I noticed there are lots of improvements in Las Casas. There are more structures, and the reception area was transferred from a small house to a vast mansion that can be reached after crossing a scenic bridge.

Las Casas simply brings you back to the past, especially during the Spanish colonial times. The old houses in the complex were acquired by the owner, Jose “Jerry” Acuzar, from various parts of the country, transferred to the complex, then meticulously rebuilt and restored. It took a lot of years before structures were built, and there is still a lot of construction going on.

One of the most exciting activities you could try in Las Casas is the River Tour. It’s a cruise around the property on a balsa passing through a narrow canal surrounded by houses. We passed through some brick walls, verandas, and balconies that depict the old Manila. It was like a replica of estero during the old Manila. It’s sad that while I was enjoying the cruise, I couldn’t help but ask. What happened? Why weren’t we able to preserve these? If what I was seeing was accurate, the old Manila looked like the canals of Venice or other European countries.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar Bataan

Another excellent experience there is the Heritage Tour. I remember this was offered to us on my first travel to Las Casas years ago during our team building, but I didn’t participate because I was busy drinking. Hahaha! But now, I will not miss the chance to join the tour.

It all started at Casa Lubao. Then from one old house to another, the tour guide explained the houses’ history. Each house has a distinct story, worthy of being shared. We were already in the third house when I got a message from a fellow blogger that they were looking for me because it was time for lunch.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar Bataan

We traveled through the kalesa and toured the entire place. Then we had our lunch at Hotel De Oriente. This is just a replica of the original hotel, which was the first luxury hotel in Binondo during the Spanish colonial era.

What amazed us are the wooden sculptures with intricate designs surrounding the hotel’s lobby. It’s a perfect setting for any photo sessions.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar Bataan

We left Las Casas after lunch and traveled for a few hours going to Mt. Samat National Shrine. Unfortunately, there was this significant pilgrimage at that time, and they were not allowing vehicles to get in close to the spot. If we would insist on going there, we had to hike for a few kilometers.

Our guides decided not to pursue, so we traveled to Balanga, checked in at The Plaza Hotel explored more of Balanga by chilling at The Beanery Coffee Shop. Then, we had dinner at a local restaurant.

8. Balanga City (Christmas Season)

Balanga City

One of the best ways to discover more of a specific destination is to go to the market. At night, we went to the market and experienced the Christmas tiangge there. I bought 2 T-shirts, while my travel buddies bought clothes, slippers and many more. Fantastic, they have a shirt for my size. Hahaha!

We went back to our hotel fully satisfied with what Bataan has to offer – the scenery, history, and food. Thumbs up!

9. Bataan National Park

After our breakfast, we traveled to Orani, Bataan, for some nature trip.

Bataan National Park is a protected area in the mountainous part of the province. It has a total of 23.6 hectares of thick forest and mountains encompassing Orani, Hermosa, Samal, Abucay, Balanga, Bagac, and Morong.

Bataan National Park

The structures of the viewing deck looked old but can still be renovated and used. There are some plans by the local Tourism office to renovate the place for the upcoming promotion of Orani as the next destination for nature lovers.

Bataan National Park

10. Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park

We planned to have our lunch at the Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park located at the jump-off point for hikers and mountain climbers going to the view deck, Pasukulan Falls and Mt. Natib. This is a mountain resort with lots of spots overlooking the mountainous parts of Orani. But before that, the staff let us experience their amenities, some adventure activities like wall climbing, rappelling, and zip line!

I wasn’t able to try wall climbing because obviously, I am overweight. I know that if I tried wall climbing, I’d just be embarrassing myself. Hahaha! I need more time to get fit, and when that time comes, I’m going back.

Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park

Ang strong. LOL!

Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park Bataan

By the end of the activities, we all tried the zipline! Of course, having fear of heights, I still got scared a bit. I was able to do the zipline in Lake Sebu in South Cotabato , the highest zipline in Southeast Asia, so this will just be a piece of cake. Hahaha!

Our tour ended with a sumptuous lunch at the resort.

Mariveles Five Fingers: Bataan’s Newest Getaway

Mariveles Five Fingers: Bataan’s Newest Getaway

Bataan province is often overlooked as a prime tourist destination for those living within its vicinity. I used to have that thinking too. However, my visit to Bataan two years ago proved me wrong. Last year, I came back for the second time and enjoyed its waters. Though its beaches are not white like those found in the other parts of the country, its proximity from Manila makes it a favorable go-to option among beach lovers.

The Five Fingers consists of five points namely Cochino’s Point (thumb), Talaga Point (index finger), Horno’s Point (middle finger), Naicklec Point (ring finger) and the last finger which is called Longos Kawayan Point (pinky finger). When we went there, our tour had a fixed itinerary. We visited three coves and also had a side trip at Apatot Cove and had our lunch in a beach. It is called Five Fingers because it resembles a hand with its fingers spread out when viewed from above.

A post shared by Paula O (@dmermaidtravels) on Mar 5, 2018 at 4:57pm PST

We started our trip late in the morning. We set for Bataan earlier that day via the newest ferry service route from Manila. We arrived at Port Capinpin at 7:30 AM and headed on to our hotel for the next hour. After settling in, we managed to get on our boat before 11 AM when the sun was already high. We didn’t have a proper breakfast. A morning date with Jollibee was cancelled but I guess the excitement we felt on what we will discover overcome our growing hunger by the minute. The tour provided free snack by way of sandwiches. However, I suggest eating a heavy breakfast as the lunch comes in the latter part of your itinerary.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

Our first stop was at Cochino’s Point which for me is the highlight of the whole trip. While the view from the top can catch your breathe away, the way to it was not easy. Well, I assume it is for seasoned hikers. But the path towards the top was a bit steep and slippery mostly because of falling rocks.  A sturdy hiking footwear is a must for the entire trip as you will mostly be stepping on jagged stones and outcrops.

mariveles bataan tourist destination

After a tiring hike in Cochino’s Point, some of us were rewarded with a refreshing swim when we cliff-dived in Natsu Lagoon. The jump was about forty feet from the highest point. Nerves got the better of me so I jumped mid-way. I spent a few minutes lounging in this blue green lagoon before we headed off to another beach where the rest of us enjoyed swimming in an actual beach.
