Let’s dive in!

Top African Animal Books

  • Larger Animals of East Africa (Collins Safari Guides) (Paperback) by David Hosking & Martin B. Withers .

This is one of the first safari guidebooks I ever bought. The classic African safari field guide to large African wildlife is a great starting point for budding safari enthusiasts.

Larger Animals of East Africa was written by two wildlife experts with over 20 years of experience leading safaris in East Africa . It covers an impressive 76 species and boasts around 200 color photographs.

– What I love about the book : Great illustrations, key facts, distribution, habits, conservation, and status. Very easy to use.

– Criticism : The edition is considerably outdated as it was published in 1997. A refresher could only be beneficial to this quality item.

NB : For a similar but more up-to-date animal guide, consider buying Wildlife of East Africa by Martin B. Withers & David Hosking .

  • The Behavior Guide to African Mammals (Paperback) by Richard D. Estes .

This African animals book is a popular favorite amongst the Africa Freak editorial team, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants to learn more than the physical characteristics of African mammals.

The unique African safari guide compiles many years of fieldwork and research into the behavior of African mammals .

Whether you’re an amateur naturalist or closer to an expert, you’re sure to find this safari guide informative and handy. This guide, beautifully illustrated by Daniel Otte , delves deep into animal behavior and much more.

– What we love about the book : It’s very informative and features detailed illustrations. This safari guidebook is a great African safari companion for amateurs and experts.

– Criticism : This safari guide is harder to read than most guides due to its academic nature.

  • Serengeti: Natural Order on the African Plain (Hardcover) by Mitsuaki Iwago .

I will always remember the day I first got this book from my parents. I was only 5 or 6 at the time, but it is perhaps the one book that truly made me fall in love with Africa and its extraordinary wildlife.

Mitsuaki Iwago is more than just a photographer. He is an artist. While this isn’t exactly a guide, it’s a fantastic book to have for every African safari enthusiast.

Serengeti by Mitsuaki Iwago is a compilation of stunning photography that makes for the perfect coffee table read and conversation starter.

– What I love about the book : Published in 1987, it’s a classic compilation of brilliant photography.

– Criticism : This animals of Africa book doesn’t offer much more than wildlife and landscape imagery, as well as photographic inspiration.

  • Signs of the Wild (Paperback) by Clive Walker .

Signs of the Wild: A Field Guide to the Spoor & Signs of the Mammals of Southern Africa is my “bible” when it comes to field guides for Southern Africa.

Anyone who has spent some time in the African wilderness knows that animal sightings often start with spoor , tracks , and small signs .

This handy guide contains insightful information on animal identification , distribution maps , and color photographs of Southern African mammals.

Here are some of the features that make this guide absolutely special:

– The environmental glossary for key terms and definitions.

– Stunning illustrations for each species.

– Concise descriptions and distribution maps.

–  Animal names translation into the main local languages: Afrikaans, Shona, Ndebele, Zulu, Siswati, Venda, Tswana/Sotho, and Nama/Damara.

– What I particularly like about the book : feces and spoor sections (illustrated) + comparative spoor illustrations.

  • The Safari Companion: A Guide to Watching African Animals (Paperback) by Richard D. Estes .

The most complete guide to watching African mammals. This incredible guide has it all, including behavioral displays of species (territorial marking, aggression, courtship rituals), illustrations , extensive maps , wildlife photography tips , and vegetation zones .

It is one of the best African safari guides for anyone who wants to understand a little more about African mammals. Safari experts will love the black-and-white illustrations and detailed information.

– What I love about the book : The beautiful illustrations and comprehensive information.

– Criticism : This volume can get a little too technical and lacks color photography. It’s also fairly robust and isn’t easy to travel with.

  • Game Ranger in Your Backpack (Paperback) by Megan Emmett & Sean Pattrick .

If you’re going on an African wilderness excursion without a safari tour guide, this is a fantastic safari guide book to take with you. Game Ranger in Your Backpack is a practical and interpretive identification guide for wildlife in South Africa’s Lowveld.

Our editorial team loves this book for its valuable information on mammals , reptiles , birds , amphibians , plants and flowers , and more. If you’re planning an African self-drive safari , this guide is worth getting.

– What we love about this book : Game Ranger in Your Backpack is easy to read, and it includes color-coded chapters and hundreds of stunning pictures.

– Criticism : The book was published in 2011 and could use a revision only because it’s such a great African tour guide substitute.

  • A Photographic Guide to Tracks and Tracking in Southern Africa (Paperback) by Louis Liebenberg .

Everyone from first-time safari-goers to experienced guides could use this African safari field guide on tracking animals in Southern Africa.

This handy photographic guide is filled with insightful images and detailed information that makes tracking easier.

It works well as a reference to pass around on group safaris , a self-drive safari companion , and a refresher for experienced guides.

Like many African wildlife books, the guide comes with distribution maps to illustrate where each species is found in southern Africa.

– What we love about this book : The photographs of droppings and tracks are handy, and the distribution guide provides valuable information.

– Criticism : While this guide is still valuable to have, we’d love to see an update, especially on the distribution maps. Much has changed since the book’s publication in 2001.

  • Tracker Manual (Paperback) by Alex van den Heever , Renias Mhlongo & Karel Benadie .

Tracker Manual is one of the most recently published African wildlife books that focuses on tracking animals in southern Africa.

This safari guidebook provides practical information on tracking around 160 African animals , compiled by industry experts.

Written to be an on-the-go guide, the manual features excellent color photos and simple bulleted text , as well as detailed descriptions for more in-depth information.

– What we love about this book : Tracker Manual is easy to read and offers accessible information for levels of safari fans.

Best Safari Guides on Birding

  • Roberts Bird Guide (Paperback) by Hugh Chittenden , Greg Davies & Ingrid Weiersbye .

Roberts Bird Guide is the ultimate compilation of information on birds in southern Africa. This African guide covers 1000 bird species through photographs and illustrations accompanied by detailed information to make identification easy.

– What we love about this book : It is one of the best African safari books on birding, and is suited for both amateurs and experts.

  • Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern Africa (Paperback) by Norman Arlott (Author), Phil Hockey (Author), Ian Sinclair (Author) & Peter Hayman (Illustrator).

This book is similar to one of the earlier versions (which I have) but is completely revised and updated to include bird species name changes , distribution maps , and revised bird taxonomy .

– Criticism : It is fairly large and hard to carry around when birding in the wilderness.

  • Birds of Southern Africa (Princeton Field Guides) (Paperback) by Ian Sinclair (Author), Phil Hockey (Author), Warwick Tarboton (Author), Peter Hayman (Illustrator) & Norman Arlott (Illustrator).

This impressive guide features around 950 beautiful species of African birds  and over 4000 illustrations by experts. While it’s a fairly old publication (2002), it’s still a great reference for birding in southern Africa.

– What we love about this book : The guide is written by ornithologists and beautifully illustrated. It’s also easy to carry around and has a glossy cover to resist water splashes.

NB : For birds of East Africa, the fully revised and updated new edition (2020) is worth checking out too.

Trees, Plants & Flowers – African Safari Books

  • Trees and Shrubs of Mpumalanga and Kruger National Park (Paperback) by Ernst Schmidt , Mervyn Lotter & Warren McCleland .

If you’re traveling through South Africa’s Mpumalanga province and Kruger National Park , this guide to the region’s trees and shrubs is one of the best safari books to take along with you.

With easy-to-read information and beautiful illustrations and photographs, it’s great for both beginner naturalists and seasoned botanists.

  • Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa (Paperback) by Braam van Wyk & Piet van Wyk .

The ideal read for beginner tree enthusiasts , this field guide is simply written and illustrated by two of southern Africa’s leading tree experts.

The paperback includes detailed information and wonderful color photographs of around 900 tree species in southern Africa, making it one of the best safari books.

Safari Tales

  • Don’t Look Behind You! : A Safari Guide’s Encounters with Ravenous Lions, Stampeding Elephants, and Lovesick Rhinos by Peter Allison .
“The best compliment you can pay a travel writer is to read his work and feel like you’re right there with him. For more than two hundred pages, I felt like I was in Africa, up to my neck in danger. I don’t even know this guy, but more than once I lay awake at night, worrying for his safety. Enough adventure, action, life lessons, and laughs to fill a movie and four sequels. The fact that Allison survived to write any of this down is a miracle in itself.” — Cash Peters, author of “Gullible’s Travels”.
  • Whatever You Do, Don’t Run : True Tales of a Botswana Safari Guide (Paperback) by Peter Allison .
“His misadventures make Whatever You Do, Don’t Run an absorbing read… The material is rich, and Allison is a gifted storyteller. And the only thing stranger than African fiction is African truth.” — National Geographic Adventure “After reading this entrancing memoir, an African safari may move to No. 1 on your travel wish list. The only catch is you’ll want the author as your guide.” — Chicago Sun-Times

Must-read books for safari lovers

Leopards in your tent, cobras in your toilet, elephants overturning vehicles … if stories of close encounters with wildlife excite you, then these books for safari lovers are must-reads. Read these safari-themed books to get you into the safari mindset before you go on one, or between game drives while on safari . But be warned, if you’re not heading to the bush anytime soon, they will give you serious bush cravings and have you planning a safari in no time.

Here are 12 books to read on safari and one not to...

Non-fiction books for safari addicts

1. memories of a game ranger by harry wolhuter.

Harry Wolhuter was one of the first game rangers in the Sabi Nature Reserve, which along with the Shingwedzi Nature Reserve, eventually became the Kruger National Park . Originally a hunter, he was recruited by James Stevenson-Hamilton, the first warden of the park, and thereafter became a conservationist, spending 45 years in its service.

The park then was very different from what it is now. Big cats were plentiful and antelopes and elephants were scarce. Rangers rode on horseback and were considered fair game by lions. In fact, Harry was once attacked by two lions and managed to kill one with his knife as it dragged him away. This book is about his fascinating life before and after he joined the park.

Interesting Fact: The Lindanda Memorial in the park marks the spot where Harry killed the lion, and the lion's skin is on display at the Stevenson-Hamilton Library in Skukuza.

Read Memories of a Game Ranger .

2. A Game Ranger Remembers By Bruce Bryden

Bruce Bryden began his career in Kruger National Park in 1971 as a graduate assistant biologist and progressed through the ranks, eventually becoming chief ranger. This book, about his 27 years as a conservationist in the park, makes for a gripping read, with its many nail-biting adventures with wildlife, encounters with poachers and narrow escapes, interspersed with his love of the bush.

Interesting Fact: Despite surviving many close encounters with the Big Five, Bruce lost to the miniscule mosquito, when he contracted malaria and died in 2009.

Read A Game Ranger Remembers .

3. 101 Kruger Tales

Books about Africa

A hyaena snatches a sleeping baby from a tent. A herd of buffalo, a pride of lions and a crocodile engage in a scuffle over a buffalo calf. A leopard helps itself to a family picnic. “101 Kruger Tales” is a compilation of exhilarating real-life accounts of unexpected sightings and encounters that took place in Kruger National Park, as told by the ordinary visitors to the park who experienced them.  You won’t want to put this book down, as these short, easy to read tales remind you how wonderfully unpredictable the bush is.

Fun Fact: When this book was being compiled, I submitted an account of an experience we had in the park. Even though it wasn’t published, I am mentioned in the book as one of those whose “anecdotes stood out”.

Read 101 Kruger Tales .

4. The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony

 Books about Africa

When acclaimed South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of “rogue” wild elephants on his private game reserve in Zululand, his first instinct was to refuse. But the herd would have been killed if he had, so he took them in. It took a while but eventually he created a strong bond with them and became a part of their family. This is a heart-warming tale of love, loyalty and respect between man and elephant.

Interesting fact: Shortly after Lawrence died, the elephant herds came to his home to pay their respects in their unique way.

5. An Elephant In My Kitchen By Francois Malherbe Anthony

When Lawrence Anthony died in 2012, his wife, Francoise, who was from Paris , was faced with the tough task of running Thula Thula without him, even though she didn’t know much about conservation. This moving book reminisces about her life with Lawrence and how she coped with the many challenges after his death. It also covers her relationship with the elephant herd, the animal rescue centre she began and the ugly reality of poaching. You will also get some great insights into the running of a game reserve.

6, 7, 8 - By Kobie Kruger

Mahlangeni – Stories of a game ranger’s family

All Things Wild And Wonderful

The Wilderness Family

When Kobie Kruger moved with her game ranger husband and three young daughters to a remote station in Kruger National Park, she was warned that it would not be easy. Her husband was away for long periods at a time, taking the kids to school and going shopping involved crossing hippo-infested rivers, and hair-raising encounters with wildlife were frequent. However their time in the park turned out to be some of the most magical years of their lives.

In this series of books, Kobie recounts their extraordinary adventures in South Africa’s largest game reserve.

9. Whatever you do don’t run by Peter Allison

I’ve always maintained that safari guides tell the most interesting tales, and this book is proof of that. It will enlighten you as to what a safari guide’s life is really like. Originally from Australia, Peter Allison worked as a top safari guide in the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. He writes about his misadventures and often humorous encounters with wildlife and the wealthy (but often strange) clients that frequent the private reserves.

Read  Whatever you do don’t run .

10. Msomi and Me

Msomi and Me

“Msomi and Me” tells the story of how a conversationist began a game lodge with the help of his right-hand man and friend, Msomi. It is interspersed with delightful anecdotes about life at a game lodge, and their challenges, as well as wildlife tales from African folklore. There are some unexpected twists in the book too.

Read Msomi and Me .

Fiction Books to read on safari

11 & 12 By James Hendry

A Year in the Wild

Back to the Bush: Another Year in the Wild

James Hendry may be familiar to many safari lovers as a live safari broadcast presenter. He is also a game ranger, naturalist, and the author of two light-hearted, entertaining books about two brothers who work in the fictional Sasekile Private Game Reserve. You can expect amusing tales of what goes on behind the scenes at an upmarket safari lodge, the eccentric staff employed there and the fascinating guests who visit the lodge.

What not to read before you go on safari

Man eaters of tsavo by john henry patterson.

This is a true story about a pair of man-eating lions that terrorised labourers during the construction of a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. More than one hundred and thirty people were killed over nine months, eventually completely halting construction because the workers were too terrified to continue. Colonel John Henry Patterson, the brave chief engineer, then took matters into his own hands and single-handedly brought an end to their nine-month reign of terror.

This book was adapted into a movie three times, the latest version being the 1996 movie “The Ghost and the Darkness” , starring Val Kilmer.

Interesting fact: The Tsavo lions were maneless males. Their bodies were sold to the Field Museum in Chicago. They were stuffed and can be found there to this day.

Although there are many books about wildlife experiences, these are some of those that I’ve enjoyed the most. I will be updating this list as I discover more great books for safari lovers and addicts. What are your favourite books about wildlife and safaris?

" If you want to see things, go to Europe. But if you want to experience things, come to Africa". Peter Allison

Great options! I've been on safaris twice and definitely habe somewhat relatable stories!

Great suggestions... Admit I havent read any of them, but love a good book post! Saving it for reading inspiration

Loved the book by Kobie Kruger (three titles but one story?). Been to many game parks and experienced some wonderful safaris.

Yes, there were 3 books about their adventures 🙂

Haven’t really experienced safaris like the African safaris, but I really am very interested. Hope to get a chance to read some of these books to gain some inspiration.

I can't say I've ever read any of these books, but some of the titles are quite funny which appeals to me! I need to add some books to my reading list so I'll look into a couple of these - thanks!

12 Fantastic Wildlife And Adventure Books Every Traveler Should Read

The following books have been chosen by members of the creative team at the Wilderness Safaris office in Johannesburg. And as you’ll see the selection varies with a range of book choices from funny to daring exploits to conservation related stories. We hope you will enjoy!

Humor Books

books1

A Year in the Wild and Back to the Bush: Another Year in the Wild James Hend r y

Game ranger extraordinaire, naturalist, muso and the editor of many of Wilderness Safaris’ fabulous video clips, James Hendry has written two light-hearted, and extremely amusing books that should be on every safari enthusiast (and wannabe enthusiast’s) reading list. Set in the fictional Sasekile Private Game Reserve, A Year in the Wild and Back to the Bush: Another Year in the Wild tell various hilarious tales of what really goes on behind the scenes of an upmarket safari lodge; including the interesting and eccentric characters who work there and the fascinating guests who visit the lodge, while weaving in the extraordinary beauty of the African bushveld at the same time.

– Tarryn Gibson, Wilderness Safaris Communications Manager

Gerald Durrell stories – My Family and Other Animals, A Zoo in my Luggage, The Bafut Beagles, etc. Gerald Durrell

I read these as a youngster and they were wonderful tales of an expat living in different places – some wild, some not so wild – and his experiences or adventures with wildlife, both large and small. They were very personal, funny stories as he had a nutty family and to escape, he absorbed himself in the world of insects, birds, animals, etc.

– Tina Kennedy, Wilderness Safaris Product Manager

Adventure Books

books2

The Eighth Summit Peter van Kets

I bought this book after Peter did a talk for Children in the Wilderness and it lay next to my bed for some time before I picked it up. As soon as I started reading it I was drawn in and intrigued by the clear determination of this adventurer. The book tells the story of two of his adventures (rowing across the Atlantic single-handed and his trek to the South Pole) and the challenges faced and lessons learnt along the way. Both of these adventures were extreme and tested Peter’s limits. His perseverance is truly inspiring.

– Mary-Anne van der Byl, Wilderness Safaris Graphic Designer

Into Thin Air Jon Krakauer

While I would never climb Everest myself (I think mountain climbers of this sort are a tad crazy), I found this tale of the disastrous 1996 expedition fascinating. One can only admire the dedication and focus of those who make this kind of commitment when it comes to fitness, time, money, personal and health challenges. The incredible feeling of success if you reach the pinnacle and the absolute devastation when it goes badly wrong are feelings I can only imagine.

Regions of the Heart David Rose & Ed Douglas

In a similar vein was the story of Alison Hargreaves, first woman to scale the planet’s two highest peaks without supplemental oxygen. She made it to the summit of K2 but never made it down.

The blurb of the book says, “They show us a woman who found freedom and fulfillment on the steep faces of some of the world’s most forbidding mountains, a wife trapped in an increasingly troubled marriage, and a mother who sought literally to climb her way to financial security – a desperate gamble for which she would ultimately pay with her life.” And I think again, as with the previous book, I have to admire those who are willing to sacrifice all to take on the elements and Mother Nature at her best, and worst.

– Tina Kennedy, Wilderness Safaris Product Manager

books3

Into Africa Martin Dugard

I have always been interested in the stories of the great explorers and have read numerous books on the topic. This one still remains as one of my favorites. A fantastic book about the true story of Stanley and Livingstone, their challenges, adventures and travels over many years.

A truly riveting book which is well researched and provides many interesting twists and turns and insights into all the characters. For those interested in the great African explorers two other great reads include: Daniel LIEBOWITZ & Charlie PEARSON’s The Last Expedition: Stanley’s Fatal Journey through the Congo and Tim Jeal’s excellent book about all the various explorers of the Nile – Explorers of the Nile: The Triumph and Tragedy of a great Victorian Adventure . Both captivating, fascinating reads.

– Sue Snyman, South Africa Regional Program Director of Children in the Wilderness

Fate is the Hunter Ernest K Gann

Gann was a pilot in the early days of commercial airlines, and his uncanny ability to emerge unscathed from storms, mechanical failures and the economic vagaries of an industry in its uncertain infancy is matched only by his flair as a writer. His words alternately soar, swoop or sputter as the less than reliable aircraft of the 30s, 40s and 50s somehow keep him aloft. Covering the emotional horizon from comic to tragic, this is a book for anyone who has ever flown anywhere in a small plane and who understands that the journey can be as much a part of the adventure as the destination. From the steamy jungles of Brazil to the fjords of Iceland, Gann somehow evades the myriad perils which thin the ranks of his peers – and passengers. His descriptions will thrill anyone who can picture their armchair as a cockpit, and yearns to take flight armed with only a teacup as protection against storms, a biscuit with which to shield themselves from the tropical sun, and a cushion to swat away the hailstones.

– Nick Galpine, Copywriter Wilderness Collection

Wild Cheryl Strayed

This is a personal favorite of mine – maybe because it’s a book that so many people can relate to in some way. At twenty-six Cheryl Strayed makes a big life decision influenced by her crumbling marriage and the loss of her beloved mother to cancer. Her decision: to walk eleven hundred miles of the west coast of America on the Pacific Crest Trail on a solo three-month hike. “I was entering. I was leaving. California streamed behind me like a long silk veil. I didn’t feel like a big fat idiot anymore. And I didn’t feel like a hard-ass Amazonian queen. I felt fierce and humble and gathered up inside…”

– Kate Collins, Copywriter Wilderness Safaris

The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession Mark Obmascik

Every year a bunch of avid birders set out to see how many bird species they can tick off in a single year. Each person hopes to achieve the highest number of sightings and will go to any length to try secure that they see the most birds – even travelling to far off places to try capture a lifer (a first time sighting) to increase their chances of winning! In his book Mark Obmascik shares the story of perhaps the greatest birding competition of all time – the 1998 North American Big Year – taking readers on a riveting ride exploring the lives of three Big Year competitors. Each participant, while very different in their lifestyles, shares the same burning passion for birding – one that you can easily relate to if you are an avian fan or enjoy sighting birds on your safaris or at home…

Out of Africa Isak Dinesen / Karen Blixen

This autobiography is an honest account of an unconventional Danish woman and her life on her farm in Kenya between 1914 and 1931. Her remarkable love for this unforgiving country is captured beautifully in her prose. What affected me the most was her sad and permanent departure from the continent having struggled to keep the farm afloat for 17 years. The final paragraph always gets to me… “From there, the south-west, I saw the Ngong Hills…The outline of the mountain was slowly smoothed and leveled out by the hand of distance.”

– Monica Jooste, Copywriter Wilderness Safaris

books5

My Lion’s Heart: A life for the Lions of Africa Gareth Patterson

This book is Gareth Patterson’s autobiography – his journey from his early days as a guide in South Africa and Botswana to working with George Adamson and the many people and animals that have shaped his life story. His account details the hardships and triumphs of working in the wild and includes many interesting insights into lion behavior written from personal observations. I also enjoyed Gareth’s book – The Secret Elephants – about his seven-year exploration of the Knysna forests. His study on the elephants and his findings are fascinating.

Love, Life, and Elephants: An African Love Story

Dame Daphne Sheldrick’s memoir tells of her incredible journey growing up in Kenya and her life’s work and dedication to protecting Kenya’s elephants… Her story centers on her relationship with David Sheldrick, the famous Tsavo National Park warden, whose death inspired the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and orphans’ nursery. A read that will inspire you and one that reaffirms the remarkable nature of elephants and the important role that we need to play in order to protect them.

Africa Safari Trip: A Comprehensive Guide To Crafting Unforgettable Memories

H ave you witnessed a lion’s roar echo across the savanna or watched a herd of elephants lumber by? An Africa safari trip is an otherworldly experience, but where do you even begin? This guide will equip you with all the essentials to plan your unforgettable adventure . Even though it can seem overwhelming at times, if you’re equipped with the right guidance and information, the procedure is rather easy.

To help you plan the perfect safari tour in Africa, in addition to answering the majority of your frequently asked questions, we’re put together some of the greatest tips and useful suggestions.

Choosing the Location of Your African Safari Trip

An Africa safari trip promises an enchanted world of discovery, where each expedition and place holds the potential to reveal a captivating tale. Every area of this enormous continent, from the lush deltas of the south to the brilliant savannahs of the east, offers a different fabric of fauna and culture. This is more than just a journey—it’s an exploration of the core of nature, where opportunity abounds at every turn.

African safaris are unique among travel experiences because of the authentic, natural spectacle of the wild. These excursions aim to fully immerse you in the world of animals, not just observe them. Planning your destination is among the most crucial aspects of preparation for any holiday, including this one. Africa is vast, so it’d be helpful to start with a “where to go on an Africa safari trip” Google search if you have no idea what to do.

To select the ideal safari destination, you must consider the things you wish to see. Are there any specific animals or cultural events you would like to see? Kenya and Tanzania from July to October are your best choices if you’ve always wanted to see the Great Wildebeest Migration. Visit either Botswana or South Africa to see a huge herd of African elephants throughout the year.

In East Africa and the majority of Southern African nations, the “Big Five” are also widely distributed. Travel to Uganda, Rwanda or the Congo for gorilla trekking; these countries are all in Central Africa. If you want to see chimpanzees on your Africa safari tour, Uganda is the ideal place to do it.

Top 5 Choice Destinations for Your Africa Safari Trip

Here are our top five African wildlife safari destinations to help you plan your trip.

Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve

At the Maasai Mara Reserves, the Big Five roam free, and boundless plains extend into the horizon on a wildlife safari. Traveling off-road and appreciating the lack of fences and lodging at any of the Mara conservation areas allows you to experience the breathtaking sight of countless wildebeests roaring across the East African savanna around the Great Migration.

From open safari vehicles, watch as lions hunt their prey with unparalleled subtlety. Elephants socialize within their close-knit groups, and elegant giraffes peruse acacia trees with grace. A fascinating insight into the Maasai people’s dynamic local culture, which is entwined with the land, its profusion of wildlife, and the natural beauties of the wildness itself, is provided by Maasai Mara.

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is home to a large environment that is brimming with life. See the boundless plains packed with antelopes, zebras, and wildebeests as they migrate in a never-ending dance of survival throughout your Africa safari trip. It’s what you anticipate seeing on game drives following your viewing of National Geographic or PBS programs. You might be amazed watching the big cats lounging in the shade following a good hunt, or you might experience the exhilaration of seeing a cheetah racing across the landscape in a flurry of speed.

There are other methods to observe wildlife, such as taking a hot-air balloon flight across the savanna for breath-inspiring, all-encompassing views of this iconic African terrain. Seasonality is essential when thinking about visiting the Serengeti; never schedule an unplanned online vacation.

Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park

You can feel the African wilderness in Zambia, not just see it. In contrast to safaris that are limited to metal enclosures, South Luangwa encourages you to stroll among the animals rather than drive by them. Imagine your heart racing as you make your way through verdant riverine forests full of leopards hiding in their disguises, only to be astounded by vast herds of buffalo crossing wide-open savannas.

As you approach elephants bathing, listen to the Luangwa River’s rushing waters, which will lead you to the echoes of night safaris. You can unwind in the unexpected comfort of fly tents or treehouse retreats when the stars adorn the sky.

South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park

You can journey across acacia woodlands and tour places with sun-filled savannas along the rushing waters of the Sabi River in South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park. Hear the echoes of prehistoric existence and see the exhilarating dance of adventures amidst the rare species. Renowned for its almost assured Big Five meetings, you get to experience the exhilarating thrill of seeing elephants trumpeting by a waterhole or lions relaxing in golden light—you don’t have to imagine it.

There is more to Kruger’s artistry than the Big Five. Higher populations of predators and a more varied array of species can be found in the superb private game reserves found in the Greater Kruger National Park. Wander along the river where crocodiles and hippos sunbathe before becoming lost in the rainbow of more than 500 different bird species.

Botswana’s Okavango Delta

Emerald islands emerge from the reflecting waters of the spreading waterways of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A mokoro is a native dugout canoe in which you may sail softly and intimately while spotting sleeping hippos afar and thirsty elephants sipping at the riverbanks .

Search among the trees for one of the greatest spots to see leopards or take in the aerial views of storks, eagles, and pelicans.

In such a distant location, the Okavango Delta boasts one of the largest concentrations of upscale safari resorts in Southern Africa, providing you with exclusive access to convenience and uncrowded rivers for a singular embrace of unspoiled wildlife.

Tips For An Outstanding African Safari Adventure

The foundation of a great African safari is effective communication. It makes sure you get the best possible experience out of your trip by bridging the gap between what you expect and the actual conditions of the environment. There are three communication techniques to help you receive the experience you want by interacting with an Africa safari trip guide or travel advisor .

Clearly state your demands and desires. Tell us about your ideal speed, cultural attractions, the wildlife you hope to see, and any unique interests you may have, such as birdwatching or photography. This enables your guide to customize your safari adventures based on your interests and budget. Mention any possible restrictions. Any physical restrictions or sensitivity should be disclosed to your guide to guarantee a fun and safe trip.

Pose inquiries. Never be afraid to ask questions about anything that piques your curiosity, be it local customs or the behavior of animals. Your guide holds a wealth of information that is just waiting to be discovered.

African safaris are an ode to the diversity and grandeur of nature. Every excursion offers a chance for a profound and intimate connection with nature. However, in a world full of breathtaking locations, the real art of travel is in how you take in each one. Each destination has a spirit of its own, and you can make transforming vacation experiences with the correct itinerary in addition to ones that are simply memorable.

Whether you’re traveling to the wild African savannahs or the charming countryside of Tuscany, creating a one-of-a-kind, dreamlike trip requires careful planning and vital information. It all comes down to creating a seamless, stress-free, and uniquely personalized tapestry of memories.

People Also Ask

How far should my Africa safari trip be scheduled? It’s advisable to make reservations eight to twelve months in advance of when you wish to go or depart for your selected African safari location. Enough time guarantees availability and your place at the top of the line for the most desirable experiences that Africa presents. It is always better to schedule your safari trip earlier than undergo a last-minute rush.

When is the ideal time to go on an Africa safari trip? The dry season, which runs from June to October, is the ideal time to go on a safari. Since it’s a warmer period of the year, there’s a greater chance that you’ll spot creatures looking for water. You can also witness the famous Masai Mara migration during these months.

Proceed with morning and afternoon game drives in the Serengeti with a lunch and leisure break at the lodge in the midafternoon. The term Serengeti means endless plains in Masai language. In the central plains there are carnivores like leopard, lion, hyena and cheetah. This park is normally the scene of the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra that occurs between the Kenyan Mara and the Serengeti. Varied bird species can be seen here including eagles, ducks, geese, egrets, vultures, secretary birds, ibis, stork, herons, kites, pelicans, cranes and guinea fowl. The Serengeti National park is a arguably the best known wildlife sanctuary in the world with over 3 million large mammals. About 35 species of plains animals can be seen there including the “big 5” - Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Leopard and Buffalo. Other common species found here includes hippo, giraffe, eland, impala and other antelope types, baboons, monkey and a profusion of over 500 species of birds. In May or early June, huge herds of wildebeest, gazelle and zebra begin their annual spectacular migration northwards. In their wake follow predators, lion, cheetah and wild dogs with vultures circling overhead! After having your lunch, you will continue with game view in Serengeti heading to the gate of Serengeti to check out of Serengeti National Park, after there you will proceed with game on route heading to Ngorongoro Crater. After breakfast, descend into the crater with lunch box enjoying the game drive for more than 7 hours. Millions of years ago, a volcano the size of Mount Kilimanjaro rose from the highlands of northern Tanzania. Its eruption formed the largest unflooded caldera in the world, the Ngorongoro Crater. Now inactive and filled with wildlife, the crater is a playground where you can enjoy game drives in in search of the Big Five. The natural protection of the crater’s 600 m (1,968 ft) high walls “Ngorongoro Crater” helps many species to thrive, is one of the most densely crowded African wildlife areas in the world and is home to an estimated 30,000 animals and this is the best place in Tanzania to see critically endangered black rhino. The park is supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, the crater supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park is its huge population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard crater floor. After a picnic lunch you will have a game drive, After game Drive we drive to Manyara for overnight.

Explore wild, uncharted territory in southern Serengeti. Lake Eyasi, located in the immediate southwest of Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania, is one of the several beautiful lakes in the East African Rift Valley. The mildly alkaline lake stretches for about 50 km to the southwest with the vast plains of the Serengeti in its north. Enjoy walks along the shores of the lake and spend afternoons exploring the area dotted with ancient Baobab trees. Go on a hunting expedition with a Hadzabe family – Africa’s last remaining hunter-gatherers, to see their astonishing ability to track and hunt small game! Early morning we depart to the village for local hunting experience with Hadzabe and Datonga tribes. This is not a mere performance. The bushmen rely on these techniques to survive and you'll need to be very attentive and at times quiet, while they demonstrate their use of locally made poisons in incapacitating the poor creatures on which they depend for survival. We return to your Accommodation for a late breakfast. After Breakfast you will be introduced to the extraordinary people who belong to an indigenous tribe known as the 'Hadzabe' (hunter-gatherer bushmen). The tribe inhabits the shores of Lake Eyasi as do the Nilotic-speaking Datoga tribe. You will visit these tribes, which will include a visit to their homesteads, learn about their way of life, animal tracking, medicinal plants, and much more. Some wildlife and a wide range of bird species can be viewed during walks around the lake, which will be arranged. At late Afternoon we drive back to Manyara/Karatu for Overnight

In the world of yacht brokerage, each journey is unique, and mine has been a captivating ride from roads to waters. I am Nate Evans, a seasoned entrepreneur with a background in the automotive service industry; I’m excited to share my story and why I chose to embark on the maritime adventure with Jeff Brown Yachts.

From Roads to Waters: The Evolution

Growing up on the water in Wilmington, North Carolina, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the maritime world. With over two decades of experience in the automotive service industry, I found myself yearning for a new challenge. The transition from car engines to marine engines was a natural evolution, guided by a genuine passion for the sea.

Discovering the Axopar Culture

The pivotal moment occurred at the 2020 International Boat Show in Dusseldorf, Germany. The Axopar culture instantly resonated with me, offering not just a boat but a lifestyle. Connecting with Jeff Brown and sharing our enthusiasm for nautical adventures, I knew I had found an amazing team with JBY, Axopar and Brabus Marine.

Client-Centric Approach: More Than Just Transactions

What sets the journey with Jeff Brown Yachts apart is the commitment to clients as individuals. Purchasing a yacht is more than a financial transaction; it’s a lifestyle choice. Understanding this, I take the time to delve into the unique boating desires of each client. The goal is not just to meet expectations but to exceed them through high ethical standards, hard work, and unwavering integrity.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
