The Hoodie is Back! And the Clearview Legacy Foundation is the Winner

The LPGA Tour tie-dye hoodie is back! The hot-selling sensation that flew off the digital shelves when introduced in April is available again and just in time for the inaugural Renee Powell Clearview Legacy Benefit at Bobby Jones Golf Course in Atlanta the day after the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Celebrating its 75th year, Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio is the only course designed, built, owned and operated by an African American: Bill Powell, the father of former LPGA Tour player and current LPGA Professional Renee Powell. Faced with racial discrimination after World War II, Bill built his own course by hand where everyone would be welcome.

Working with KPMG and the Mariah Stackhouse Foundation, the LPGA will help channel proceeds from the event at Bobby Jones Golf Course to the Clearview Legacy Foundation, which has begun a campaign to endow Clearview and preserve its significant part in our American history.

“At the core of the LPGA is a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion,” said Roberta Bowman, the LPGA’s Chief Brand and Communications Officer. “Renee Powell and her family play a singular role in the history of African Americans in golf. Renee is a global ambassador for the game and continues to use golf as a means for inclusion. We are proud to be part of this effort to celebrate Renee and her family and preserve Clearview Golf Club and its mission of providing a place where all people can enjoy the game.”

Proceeds from the sale of the tie-dye LPGA hoodie will go to the Clearview Legacy Foundation and the LPGA Renee Powell Fund. The hoodie can be purchased at lpgaproshop.com.

“It's been wild,” Michelle Wie West, who is the driving force behind the hoodie, said at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. “I remember calling Roberta (and saying), ‘I have this crazy idea.’ She's like, ‘okay.’ She jumped right on board from the get-go. Roberta and her team at the LPGA worked day and night trying to get this figured out. I did not make it easy for them.”

Wie West has also been instrumental in getting athletes from other sports and celebrities to help promote the hoodie.

“It's amazing when you have such a great item and especially going towards such a great cause, and seeing how everyone has supported it,” Wie West said. “The craziest thing about it is that the larges and extra larges sold out first, and they keep selling out over and over again. It's just so amazing to see the support of dads and male figures wearing it.”

Most importantly, the hoodie is helping to support the Clearview Legacy Foundation and the LPGA Renee Powell Fund.

“Having been a member of the LPGA for five decades, it gives me great pride that my association has chosen to honor two causes that are near and dear to my heart: the LPGA Renee Powell Fund and the Clearview Legacy Foundation, especially during the 75th anniversary of when my father built Clearview Golf Course,” said Renee Powell.

The LPGA has a new tie-dye hoodie—and it’s getting a ton of attention

Piggybacking off the WNBA’s wildly popular logo hoodie launched last fall, Michelle Wie has teamed up with the LPGA to release a golf version that is creating a lot of buzz. The tie-dye hoodie officially launched Monday, but we got a sneak peek of the LPGA-logoed sweatshirt when Warriors guard Damion Lee shared a photo while wearing it last week. The image was tweeted by the LPGA Twitter account, and the hoodie almost instantly sold out on the LPGA merchandise site. RELATED: The best women’s golf shirts, according to Golf Digest Editors

The hoodie is back in stock, but will likely sell out just as quickly as the pre-launch.

Wie, who had an integral part of creating this hoodie, says she was initially inspired by the merchandise movement at the WNBA and hopes the LPGA hoodie will similarly help grow the women's game.

"I have the WNBA hoodie in my closet and every time I wore it, I felt proud to wear it," Wie said. "It's almost a badge of honor being like, ‘Hey I support women’s sports and the WNBA,' and ever since I started wearing the hoodie I’ve gotten more into it and have started watching more games—I hope when people wear the LPGA hoodie they feel that same sense of honor."

Supporting the women’s game and the charitable initiative behind this hoodie, several other professional athletes are expected to be spotted wearing the hoodie in the coming days. Proceeds on purchases of the hoodie will be donated to the Renee Powell Fund and The Clearview Legacy Foundation—two nonprofit organizations that work to make golf more inclusive.

"Hopefully this hoodie will help change the face of golf," Wie said. "I mean nothing says 'changing the face of golf' like a tie-dye hoodie, right?"

Michelle Wie’s LPGA hoodie is the must-have golf item of 2021

Michelle Wie recently returned to the LPGA Tour, and her new limited-edition  # HoodieForGolf has had an enormous impact with several golf fans as well as professional athletes all making sure they get one.

Michelle Wie designed the tie-dye cotton candy hoodie to promote women’s golf, and recently took to Instagram to say:

“We wanted to create this hoodie to help elevate the visibility of women’s sports and women’s golf. More importantly, this is an opportunity to raise money for two charities that are working to change the face of golf and increase participation and representation of girls of color. Thanks for joining me in wearing and sharing this hoodie and helping to change the face of golf.”

Golden State Warriors players Damion Lee and Kent Bazemore have been spotted wearing the hoodie, and Justin Thomas and Ian Poulter have recently proudly shown off their LPGA Tour hoodie on their Instagram stories.

Proceeds from the hoodie will benefit the LPGA Renee Powell Fund and the Clearview Legacy Foundation, named after Powell. Powell, 74, was the second black player to compete on the LPGA when she made her debut in 1967.

“a big misunderstanding” – charges against scottie scheffler dropped.

“Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler.”

So began Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell, Wednesday, telling a judge that “Mr. Scheffler’s characterization that this was ‘a big misunderstanding’ is corroborated by the evidence.”

Accordingly, all charges against the 27-year-old have been dropped. Scheffler was facing four charges, most seriously, second degree assault on a police offer, in conjunction with his May 17 failure to stop when directed to by Detective Bryan Gillis as he attempted to enter Valhalla Golf Club prior to the second round.

O’Connell’s reference to “a big misunderstanding” alludes to Scheffler’s statement during the PGA Championship.

“It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do,” Scheffler’s statement read.

“The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr. Scheffler,” O’Connell said. “However, Mr. Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses.”

Following the hearing, Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines said, “The more evidence that comes out, the more it shows that Scottie was a victim here.” Romines told reporters eyewitness accounts contradicted Gillis’ assertion that he was dragged by Scheffler’s car.

Romines indicated Scheffler wants to “move on” and does not intend to pursue civil litigation.

In a statement following the decision, Louisville Metro Police Department stated

“We respect the County Attorney’s decision, and we respect the judicial process. LMPD will remain focused on our mission to serve the city of Louisville and mitigate violent crime. Videos and documents which were previously unreleased due to the judicial process will be made available, after appropriate redactions are made.”

Scheffler, who was due to be arraigned in court June 3, was not present at the proceedings Wednesday.

PGA Tour pro calls for Nelly Korda to be given exemption into men’s event

Nelly Korda has been a dominant force in women’s golf this season. She’s already amassed six victories including a major championship this year and will be looking to add another at this week’s U.S. Women’s Open.

Last year, LPGA Tour player Lexi Thompson received an exemption into a men’s PGA Tour event, and Tour player Michael Kim believes the same opportunity should be afforded to Korda.

Spotted on the LPGA Tour: Golf-approved hoodies are here to stay

Another week, another Tour winner sporting a hoodie. At this point, it’s fair to say the trend is here to stay. Who doesn’t want to wear a warm and cozy hoodie in this weather anyway?

Last week, the LPGA Tour battled it out at the Volunteers of America Texas Shootout at Old American Golf Club, and it was COLD. Beanies, vests, and mittens were out in full force. Expect more chilly mornings at this week’s U.S. Women’s Open too.

Ultimately, Angela Stanford overcame the blustery Texas weather to shoot a final round 67 and win the event by two shots — an emotional victory for the 43-year-old Texas native.

HAMILTON, Ontario — With the PGA Tour north of the border this week for the RBC Canadian Open , it’s only appropriate that the merchandise tent is well represented with maple leaf shirts and the tournament logo featuring Nick Taylor’s 72-foot eagle putt to win the title last year.

• Ukraine's state budget is under immense pressure, relying heavily on ally support and spending almost all tax revenue on the military.
• Russia has issued a decree to confiscate U.S. assets in retaliation, while U.S. officials like Treasury Secretary push for more ambitious strategies to aid Ukraine.

FRANKFURT, Germany — Ukraine’s allies are wrestling with how to squeeze money out of frozen Russian assets to support Kyiv’s war effort, a debate getting more urgent as Russia gains territory on the battlefield and as the outlook for Ukraine’s state finances looks shakier.

At the top of the agenda as finance officials from the Group of Seven rich democracies meet Thursday through Saturday in Stresa, Italy, on the shores of scenic Lago Maggiore, is what to do with the Russian central bank reserves frozen in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

Calls For Confiscation of Frozen Russian Assets

Ukraine and many of its supporters have called for the confiscation of $260 billion in Russian assets frozen outside the country after the Feb. 24, 2022, invasion.

But European officials have resisted, citing legal and financial stability concerns. Most of the frozen assets are located in Europe.

A European plan to merely use the interest on the Russian funds would provide only a trickle of money every year — about $2.5 billion-$3 billion at current interest rates, which would barely meet a month’s financing needs for the Ukrainian government.

U.S. Treasury officials and outside economists are proposing ways to turn that annual trickle into a much larger chunk of upfront cash.

That could done be through a bond that would be repaid by the future interest income, giving Ukraine the money immediately. The ministers will meet with Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko on Saturday.

“Securing Ukraine’s position in the medium-to-long term requires unlocking the value of immobilized Russian sovereign assets,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said at a news conference Thursday in Stresa. “We support the EU’s decision to utilize the windfall profits from these assets, but we must also continue our collective work on more ambitious options.”

She said $50 billion “has been mentioned as a possible number that could be achieved” from the assets, but that the specific approach was still under discussion.

The debate over the Russian assets is being revived after President Joe Biden in April signed into law the Rebuilding Economic Prosperity and Opportunity for Ukrainians Act, which allows the administration to seize the roughly $5 billion in Russian state assets located in the U.S. The law was included in the U.S. aid package for Ukraine and other nations, which includes roughly $61 billion for Ukraine’s defense.

As the Stresa meeting started, Russia published a decree from President Vladimir Putin allowing confiscation of assets of U.S. companies and individuals as compensation for any Russian assets seized in the United States.

Ukraine Uses Majority of Taxes on Military

Exactly what the income from Russian assets would be spent on remains open, but one key focus is Kyiv’s state budget. Ukraine spends almost the entirety of its tax revenue on the military and needs another $40 billion a year to continue paying old-age pensions and the salaries of doctors, nurses and teachers — the glue that holds society together under dire wartime circumstances.

Support from allies and a $15.4 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund was initially thought to have secured the budget for four years, but the prospects of an extended conflict have darkened the outlook.

Ukraine depends on its allies for that money because the war keeps the government from accessing international bond market borrowing. The alternative would be printing money at the central bank, which risks igniting hyperinflation.

Thanks to EU support and the U.S. aid package, passed after months of delay, this year’s budget “looks decent in terms of budget financing” but “next year is going to be much more challenging,” said Benjamin Hilgenstock, senior economist at the Kyiv School of Economics Institute.

The ministers will seek to build consensus ahead of the June 13-15 summit of G7 national leaders summit in Italy.

Yellen will also raise China’s outsized, state-backed production of green energy technology, which the U.S. considers a threat to the global economy. It has been a little more than a month since she traveled to China to speak with her counterparts in Guangzhou and Beijing about the nation’s massive subsidies to its electric vehicles, batteries, solar energy equipment and other products.

U.S. Raises Tariffs on China

Since then, the U.S. has imposed major new tariffs on electric vehicles, semiconductors, solar equipment and medical supplies imported from China. Included is a 100% tariff on Chinese-made EVs, meant to protect the U.S. economy from cheap Chinese imports.

Yellen said Chinese overcapacity was an issue not just for the U.S. but also for other G7 and developing countries. That’s because China’s selling of low-priced goods threatens the existence of competing companies around the world, she said. “We are not willing to be completely reliant on China as a provider of these goods,” she said.

“We need to stand together and send a unified message to China so they understand that it is not just one country that feels this way but that they face a wall of opposition to this strategy that they are pursuing.”

Yellen said the finance ministers would also discuss humanitarian aid for Gaza, and that she would urge other member governments to join in strengthening sanctions against Iran over support of terrorist groups.

The G7 meets annually to coordinate economic policy and discuss other issues including security and energy. Its members are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Representatives of the European Union also take part, but the EU does not serve as one of the rotating chairs.
