'All bands are competitive - they just don't admit it': London Grammar eye third No.1 album
London Grammar have spoken to Music Week about sticking to their guns on their upcoming fourth album, The Greatest Love.
The trio - lead vocalist and songwriter Hannah Reid, multi-instrumentalist and producer Dot Major, and guitarist Dan Rothman - star on the cover of our latest issue , and are about to embark on a new era with the dance-focused new LP.
The group are targeting their third No.1 album with The Greatest Love, which drops on September 13 via long-term label Ministry Of Sound, having previously hit the top spot with 2021's chart-topping Californian Soil (120.638 sales, OCC) and 2017's Truth Is A Beautiful Thing (273,904 sales).
Their biggest-seller, 2013 debut If You Wait (835,249 sales), peaked at No.2.
“After our first record, sometimes we felt we were under lots of pressure,” said Hannah Reid , speaking in the new issue of Music Week . “But now that we have our fanbase we can be confident in that and make music that we love.”
Rothman said that matching the No.1 successes of their last two albums is “definitely a goal for me”, adding: "All bands are competitive - they just don’t admit it.”
We want Dipesh [Parmar] to be excited and his opinion really matters to us. But if somebody told us to change something, we’d say no Hannah Reid
After writing the initial demos at home, the Ivor Novello-winning band completed the record at Damon Albarn's Studio 13.
“We could close off the outside, it was just about the three of us,” said Reid. “It’s better making records that way, without a huge interruption of year-long tours in between. Some people can keep making music whilst being on tour, but we can’t, really.”
Despite feeling confident their new music represents their finest work to date, Reid revealed that “some people around us said they didn’t like some of the songs”. While the group remained steadfast in their view, they took on board comments from long-term A&R - and current Columbia president - Dipesh Parmar , who signed the band to Ministry Of Sound over a decade ago.
“We want Dipesh to be excited and his opinion really matters to us,” said Reid. “But, if somebody told us to change something, we’d say no.”
Referencing misogyny and sexism, Reid said she approached songwriting with a newfound “celebratory” outlook.
“I think the music industry, in general, did at times make me quite insecure and lose a lot of confidence,” she confided. “As an artist, I do find that elements of it can feel quite brutal sometimes. In the past I could be quite passive or just unaware. And, if you’re not very defined about who you are as an artist, other people will start hanging things on you… What they think you should be.”
“It’s been quite a learning curve for me to understand, from Hannah’s point of view, what it means to be the front person of the band,” reflected Rothman. “And, also, what it means for her to be a woman in the music industry.”
We need more women at the top. I think it all trickles down and I don’t think you can have genuine change without that Hannah Reid
On that front, Reid said there had been progress made post #MeToo, with visible improvements such as better gender splits on festival line-ups.
“It used to be very male-heavy, whereas I’d say it’s now 50/50,” she said. “There’s still a long way to go. We need more women at the top. I think it all trickles down and I don’t think you can have genuine change without that.”
Reid went on to turn her attention to the wider industry.
“Artists in general should be more empowered,” she added. “There’s something about the whole way that the music industry is set up that, ethically, is incorrect. There are some incredible artists, male and female, who can’t afford to make art any more.
"I don’t see how any genuine, long-lasting social change can happen unless the art itself is empowered, so that needs to change. The art needs to inform the business, whereas at the moment the business is informing the art.”
London Grammar announced their biggest tour to date in the days after closing the Park Stage to a huge crowd at Glastonbury 2024. This autumn wil see them headline arenas for the first time, involving stops in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Berlin, Glasgow and Manchester, culminating at The O2 in London on 14 November.
Demand for the dates has been so strong that almost double the amount of European tickets have been sold compared to what was originally on sale.
“We’ve worked really hard on this show, and I know it sounds cliché, but we’re very proud,” said Reid. “Genuinely, as a band, we have ridden some waves and worked really, really hard to get to this point.”
Subscribers can read the full London Grammar cover story, also featuring Ministry Of Sound’s Dipesh Parmar and Tap Music Management’s Tony Beard and Liv Plunket, in the current edition of Music Week . It's also available online for subscribers here .

More than 200 industrial jobs will land in London as three manufacturers buy land here with plans to build new plants, the head of the city’s economic development agency says.
City council, at its Tuesday meeting, approved the sale of three parcels of land in industrial parks to businesses in the technology, food processing and manufacturing sectors, Kapil Lakhotia, chief executive of the London Economic Development Corp. said on Wednesday.

“We’re delighted to welcome three advanced manufacturing companies to London that are very diverse. We expect all three will bring more than 200 jobs to the community,” he said.
Only one business was named: Maple Armor Group, which makes residential, commercial and industrial alarm systems. The other two are numbered companies whose owners do not yet want to be identified, Lakhotia said.
“We like to hit home runs but we will take singles and doubles, too,” he said. “This is diversifying the manufacturing sector.”
Here are the specifics of the land buys:
- Maple Armor Group Corp. bought 14 acres (5.6 ha) of land in Innovation Park phase four on Boyd Court, north of Highway 401 off Veterans Memorial Parkway, at a cost of $2.9 million.
- Another business bought 9.7 acres (four ha) in Innovation Park phase one for $2 million.
- A manufacturer paid $2.9 million for 14 acres (5.6 ha) in Huron Industrial Park in the area of Huron Street just west of Veterans Memorial Parkway.
For Maple Armor, a Chinese-based business with global operations, the London plant will employ about 50 when it opens, most likely in 2026. It will serve as its Canadian head office and its first manufacturing plant in Ontario, said chief operations advisor Harry Yang.
“We’re very excited. We looked around southern Ontario at a lot of different cities and we liked how London wanted to sell only to manufacturers who wanted to build,” Yang said. “I like that philosophy, it makes me optimistic about the future.”
He also credited the location, close to Buffalo and Detroit, as a reason to build here because the plant will ship alarm systems into the U.S. as well as across Canada, and even overseas if there is demand. “London is not too big but it’s big enough to have labour. It has a lot of potential.”
As for the city’s industrial land inventory, London has about 150 acres (60 ha) left in Huron Industrial Park and 77 (31 ha) acres in Innovation Park. But Lakhotia wants to add more land for future suppliers to the Volkswagen electric vehicle battery plant opening in St. Thomas in 2027.
“We’re confident we will have land ready for immediate needs but we have to keep an eye on the future, for sure,” Lakhotia said.
There are several hundred more acres also available that’s in the hands of private land owners, he added.

MLB's travel plans for '24: Seoul, Mexico City, London, D.R.
David Adler
The MLB World Tour is coming to four international destinations in 2024: London, Mexico City, Seoul and Santo Domingo.
The Seoul Series will be the opener of the 2024 MLB regular season -- and will mark the first MLB regular-season games ever played in Korea.
Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association announced the full plans for the four series on Wednesday.
• Seoul Series: Dodgers vs. Padres, March 20-21 (MLB season opener) • Mexico City Series: Astros vs. Rockies, April 27-28 • London Series: Mets vs. Phillies, June 8-9 • Dominican Republic Series: Red Sox vs. Rays, March 9-10 (Spring Training)
• MLB international
"Major League Baseball is incredibly excited for this extensive slate of international games in 2024," Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "Our recent efforts have produced strong enthusiasm around the globe, and we look forward to building on that foundation with returns to Mexico City and London, while also opening the season in Korea for the first time. In addition, we can’t wait to celebrate the tradition of the sport in the Dominican Republic with our visit to Santo Domingo next March. We are thrilled that our fans across four different countries outside the United States and Canada will have the opportunity to see the game’s stars."
The MLB World Tour schedule for next year includes the return of games to the United Kingdom and Mexico for a second consecutive season, after the 2023 London Series between the Cubs and Cardinals and Mexico City Series between the Giants and Padres, in addition to new stops in Korea and the Dominican Republic.
“Players have a deep interest in growing baseball around the world. No matter where they come from, players are linked by a passion for our game that transcends different languages, cultures, and nationalities,” said Tony Clark, the executive director of the MLB Players Association. “The series announced today will allow fans around the globe to gain a first-hand appreciation for the unmatched skill and infectious enthusiasm players display every time they go to work. We are excited to expand our international presence in new communities and celebrate the game we all love.”
Here's a look at each of the four international series in 2024.
Seoul Series
The Dodgers and Padres will open up the 2024 season with two games in Korea from March 20-21.
The Seoul Series will mark the ninth time that the MLB season has opened outside the 50 U.S. states and Canada, and the first time in five years. Previous international openers include:
• 1999 -- Monterrey, Mexico (Rockies vs. Padres) • 2000 -- Tokyo, Japan (Mets vs. Cubs) • 2001 -- San Juan, Puerto Rico (Rangers vs. Blue Jays) • 2004 -- Tokyo, Japan (Rays vs. Yankees) • 2008 -- Tokyo, Japan (Red Sox vs. A's) • 2012 -- Tokyo, Japan (A's vs. Mariners) • 2014 -- Sydney, Australia (Dodgers vs. D-backs) • 2019 -- Tokyo, Japan (A's vs. Mariners)
It will be the Dodgers' first international games since they played the Padres in Mexico in 2018, and their second Opening Day abroad after the 2014 season opener in Australia.
"The Dodgers have a long and proud history of helping to grow the game abroad, highlighted by our trips to Mexico, China and Australia. It's very exciting to add Korea to the list," Dodgers president Stan Kasten said. "I know our players are thrilled to put their talents on display in a country so rich with baseball tradition and talent, including former Dodgers Chan Ho Park, Hee-Seop Choi and Hyun Jin Ryu."
The Padres will be playing internationally for a second straight season, but in a new country, going from the 2023 Mexico City Series to the 2024 Seoul Series. Like the Dodgers, they've also played abroad on Opening Day before, in the inaugural international season opener back in 1999.
"Korea is a great baseball country with a rich tradition, passionate fans, and talented players, including current Padre and San Diego fan favorite Ha-Seong Kim," Padres CEO Erik Greupner said. "The Padres are proud to serve alongside the Dodgers as global ambassadors for the game of baseball with our historic 2024 Korea Series."
Mexico City Series
The second Mexico City Series will feature the Astros and Rockies for a pair of games on April 27 and 28, almost exactly a year after this season's inaugural Mexico City Series.
Both Houston and Colorado last played internationally in Mexico, but in Monterrey, not Mexico City. The Astros played two regular-season games against the Angels there in 2019, and the Rockies played an exhibition series against the D-backs that same year.
The Astros have played exhibition games in Mexico City before, in 2016 against the Padres and 2004 against the Marlins.

London Series
The London Series returns for its third edition overall, with the Mets and Phillies facing off at London Stadium on June 8 and 9.
The Mets will be playing abroad for the first time since 2010, when they faced the Marlins in Puerto Rico. But they're no stranger to international games, having participated in both MLB's first-ever international regular season games in 1996 in Mexico and MLB's first-ever regular-season games in Japan in 2000.
• 2024 London Series will feature NL East rivalry in Mets-Phils
"Interest in baseball is growing all over the world, and to bring the Mets' 'never-say-die' attitude to sports fans in London is a tremendous honor," Mets owner Steve Cohen said. "Our Queens family is ready to show London a great time with exciting baseball and amazing experiences that create new fans and build the Mets community throughout the United Kingdom."
The Phillies have never played regular-season games internationally, and have left the U.S. and Canada only once, over 50 years ago, for a pair of exhibition games against the Pirates in San Juan in 1977.
"Major League Baseball has done an excellent job of expanding its footprint internationally, and we are honored to play a role in that effort as part of the 2024 London Series," Phillies managing partner John Middleton said. "This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our players' talents and highlight the excitement that comes with a Phillies-Mets matchup for our fans in the UK and for those who have never attended a baseball game."
Dominican Republic Series
In addition to the three international regular-season series planned for in 2024, the Red Sox and Rays will play a Spring Training series in Santo Domingo at Estadio Quisqueya from March 9-10.
"This unique opportunity builds on our long-standing connection to the Dominican Republic and allows us to celebrate the remarkable talents and rich cultural heritage of a country whose passion for the game has distinctly shaped our organization," Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said. "From the players who have passed through our Dominican Republic Academy to those who have helped us win championships, we have been fortunate to witness the profound impact of Dominican players within our game, and we are thrilled to be able to bring Red Sox baseball to such a vibrant baseball community next year."
Exhibition games are also a key part of the MLB World Tour, which includes up to 16 exhibition games being played internationally between 2023 and ‘26, as well as up to 24 regular-season games spanning Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Jenna ortega carries the ‘beetlejuice’ house as a purse at the sequel’s london premiere.
She’s so stylish, it’s spooky.
Jenna Ortega continued her themed press tour for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” on Thursday, choosing a very appropriate handbag for the movie’s London premiere.
The “Wednesday” actress, 21, wore a custom corseted Harris Reed gown with a structural peplum, black velvet panels and opera gloves to match.
It was her accessories, however, that most directly referenced the creepy flick; Ortega carried an Ozias purse in the shape of the fictional Winter River, Connecticut, house where most of the action takes place in the original 1988 movie.
On Instagram , designer Marc Ozias called creating the one-of-a-kind bag “one of the biggest projects of my life so far,” as he “wanted to create a bridge between leatherwork and cinema.”
“I knew I wanted to recreate the iconic Beetlejuice house no matter how challenging it would be,” he added.

In addition to the unique carryall, Ortega wore a variety of jewelry from Fabergé’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” collaboration , including sparkling spiral earrings ($14,200), a ruby spiral ring ($13,600), an emerald spiral ring ($16,300) and a show-stopping ruby cocktail ring ($20,600).
In theaters Sept. 6, the Tim Burton sequel sees three generations of Deetzes returning to their old family home. Winona Ryder reprises her role as Lydia, who is still haunted by Beetlejuice, while Ortega stars as her daughter.
The production team even returned to the original filming site — which is actually in East Corinth, Vermont — to shoot the sequel.
“I remember one time we were rehearsing outside of Winter River. We built it on the same hill, the same town, the same house, the same measurements, everything. They had all the old notes from the original,” Ortega revealed in conversation with Entertainment Weekly.
“And it was strange ’cause we’d be shooting, and people who lived in that town in Vermont were coming over with books signed by Tim from 30 years ago or photos from the original ‘Beetlejuice,’ like, ‘Oh, we were here when they first came back!'”
This is far from Ortega’s first sartorial Easter egg during the press tour. On Wednesday, the brunette beauty paid homage to the Lydia Deetz of the ’80s, hitting the red carpet at the 2024 Venice Film Festival in a gorgeous Dior Haute Couture gown in the same vibrant red shade as the character’s iconic wedding dress.
She even channeled Betelgeuse himself in a double-breasted maroon Paul Smith suit, and made like Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) in a black-and-white checked Alessandra Rich blazer.
Earlier this month, she wore a Deetz-esque Thom Browne plaid skirt and cardigan paired with a “Handbag for the Recently Deceased” — another Ozias original — and in Mexico City, she chose a leather Lurline dress with a shrunken head molded into the bodice.
