Best time to visit philippines.

With a year-round warm climate, expect hot weather when visiting the Philippines at any time of the year. Sea breezes prevail in the coastal regions between November and February, so travel during this time if you wish to take the edge off the heat. January to May are considered the optimum times to visit though, as it is best to avoid the typhoon season which runs from July to October and involves heavy rain, flooding and high winds.

Geography and environment

Consisting of more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines archipelago is located in the South-East of  Asia , in between the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea. Being a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is home to many active volcanoes and a staggering amount of biodiversity, with thousands of plant, mammal, fish and bird species living on land and in the sea. As a very mountainous country, the Philippines is dotted with numerous peaks, which give way to deep valleys that are often studded with rivers and streams. Tropical rainforest occupies much of the landmass, with most of the population living on the low lying coastal areas.

Festivals and events

With a history dating back to 1210, this flamboyant festival is considered one of the Philippines' best. Think massive ostentatious costumes, loud drumming, floats of parading dancers, riotous crowds and a healthy dose of partying, and you've got Ati-Atihan—the Philippines' best shot at Rio Carnaval.

Grand Cordillera Festival

Baguio reserves the fourth last week of November to celebrate life and local culture with ethnic songs, dance, costumes and food. This festival spreads peace and tolerance and provides an interesting snapshot of the lives of the ethnic people of the northern Luzon area.

Iloilo City gets its chance to party with its own version of Ati-Atihan. City streets are decked out with colorful banners, street stalls sizzle with barbecued pork and chicken, and costumed dancers compete for glory.

Feast of Our Lady of Candles

This annual display of epic religious pageantry features a procession of the patroness, fiesta queen and court through the streets and town center of Jaro. Locals carry candles and a statue of the Virgin Mary to the town cathedral, where crowds of people wait. This spirited and vibrant festival is a great introduction to Filipino culture and religious celebrations.

Obando Fertility Festival

Want to see couples dance through the streets in aid of hopefully producing a child? Each year, the town of Bulacan holds this festival for childless couples who wish to produce children. Couples dance down the street to the local church, dance up the aisle and attend mass in honor of the three local patron saints.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Philippines?

Citizens of most countries are allowed to enter the Philippines without a visa for a stay of up to 30 days, provided they hold a valid return ticket.

Is tipping customary in the Philippines?

Tipping isn't mandatory or customary in the Philippines, but a tip of spare change or another small amount (20-40 pesos) would be appreciated by restaurants, drivers and other service workers, especially if the service has been particularly good.

What is the internet access like in the Philippines?

Large cities and tourist areas have internet access available at cyber cafes, but expect limited internet access in remote and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in the Philippines?

Cell phone receptivity is at a high rate in the large cities, but coverage may be patchy or less reliable in mountainous places, remote areas and on some islands. Ensure global roaming is activated before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in the Philippines?

You'll have to adjust to different standards of hygiene and sanitation whilst in the Philippines. The standard toilet is of the squat variety and this may take some getting used to although Western style toilets can be found in large hotels and some tourist areas.

Can I drink the water in the Philippines?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in the Philippines. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating

Are credit cards accepted widely in the Philippines?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist-orientated retailers, but less so by smaller vendors like small, family-run restaurants, market stalls and guesthouses. Be sure to carry enough cash to cover small purchases as credit cards may not always be accepted.

What is ATM access like in the Philippines?

Travelers will be able to find ATMs that accept foreign cards in the large cities but less so in remote towns and rural areas. Be sure to have enough cash before leaving the city as ATMs may not always be available outside of metropolitan areas.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

The transportation to and from airport, transportation via air Asia (flight to cebu and puerto Princesa), and the numerous vans we took to get to each location were perfectly organized. Overall I would recommend this tour for anyone trying to just come here, without headache, and have a great time!

He helped join the group together before we even started and made everyone feel included once we got there. What service. I told all my friends about the CPTH and Moya. The hotels are good. Clean and safe. A couple were really modern with roof top pools. Ian, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and made sure everything was running on time. We had some disruption to our water activities due to high waves in Palawan, but Ian and Michael pivoted the activities so they were still fun and engaging. This tour was by far one of the most amazing experiences of my life. This was my first time travelling to a Southeast Asian country by myself but I felt safe and welcomed the entire time. The opportunity to stay in a guest house in one of the small villages gave me the chance to truly appreciate the simplistic life of the village people. My tour guide, Marvin Bunaton was a wonderful guide to have. He gave me lots of valuable information about Ifugao culture and made sure I was safe the entire time. I am very lucky to have had him as a tour guide. I recommend this trip to everyone who loves hiking and beautiful sceneries! If I ever come back to the Philippines, I will bring my loved ones and do this tour all over again!

Although my trek was very challenging, I enjoyed every bit of it. My tour guide Jonathan was an amazing companion throughout my tour making me feel at home. Would definitely recommend it this tour of Banaue, Batad etc

The trip was well worth it. All of the sights were beautiful and worth the long bus trips to and from Sagada and Banaue. It was a small group tour was only two couples. The Tour was just amazing, everything was well organized and prepared for us. I enjoyed every day of it. Our Tourguide Jovain was excellent, he explained everything well and had always an answer to our questions. Over and all i can absolutely recommend this trip.

This trip has been on of a lifetime! Where to begin... everywhere we visited was just pure paradise and the activities were all perfect for each place- it was the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure! Soo many amazing beaches we saw and the expedition took us to some remote islands which were so quiet it felt like a private island tour! Jovain our guide could not do enough for us all, answering any questions and always keeping us up to date on each days itinerary. There was a situation which arose with a fellow traveller where Jovain was getting spoke to very aggressively and he handled the difficult situation very professionally. Alongside this there was an elderly member of the group and he was by her side wherever she needed help being there to assist her and so kind. The accommodation was all clean and the camping was so cool! The food was brilliant along the way with so many options. Really enjoyed this tour and would do it allll over again if I could! Thank you Jovain and do you travel!!!

Ronnie, our guide, was absolutely fantastic. Always available and attentive to our needs. He went above and beyond to ensure that the group felt comfortable and his attention to detail was next to none and even by going that extra mile to ensue we tasted the local delicacies. Would highly recommend this tour and hopefully you will have the extra perk of having Ronnie as your guide. Some parts of the itinerary had to be changed but the back-up plan suited everyone and was very enjoyable.
