FlipFlopGlobetrotters.com - Best travel bed rail for kids, bed bumpers and bed rails for travel

There are some fantastic toddler travel bed solutions , but what if your kids are a bit older or you’re looking for a more lightweight option? Can you turn existing beds in hotel rooms or Airbnb apartments into a safe place to sleep for your little ones with something that weighs next to nothing? Yes, you can! Portable bed rails and especially inflatable bed bumpers are the best invention ever for traveling families!

When we traveled around South East Asia with our little world traveler we had a small bed tent, similar to the KidCo PeaPod , for him and he loved it. His own predictable, safe space to sleep. At that time he was still used to sleeping in a crib at home. When it was really too hot to sleep in his tent we put a mattress on the floor but more often than not he ended up on the floor next to the mattress. He was a very ‘active’ sleeper and still is. I have to admit I never even thought about bed bumpers at that time but they would have been a fantastic solution.

Next trip we’re bringing travel bed rails!

Our son now sleeps in a big boy bed at home (with a fixed bed rail) and he’s gotten too tall to fit in his travel tent. This means that for upcoming travels we need a new (and safe) solution, as we still find him with his feet on his pillow every so often. Next time we’re traveling we’re definitely bringing travel bed rails for toddlers to make sure he doesn’t fall out of bed while on the road. The inflatable bed bumpers hardly take up any space and they’re extremely lightweight, so also a great idea if you’re traveling with only hand luggage.

Best bed bumpers comparison table

What are toddler bed bumpers.

Travel bed bumpers for toddlers are both available as foam bed bumpers and inflatable bed bumpers. Both can be used as travel bed guard rail. Both are lightweight and very easy to install. The foam toddler bed bumpers can be rolled up quite small and usually come with a carry bag. These are perfect for road trips, but can also be used to air travel. If you’re traveling very lightweight or with carry-on only, an inflatable bed rail is the better choice as they hardly take up any space.

An inflatable travel bed guard for toddlers is a lightweight, more or less triangular-shaped, air-filled tube that you place on top of the mattress, underneath the fitted sheet. These inflatable bed bumpers have a non-slip coating on the bottom, so they stay firmly on the mattress, held in place by the fitted sheet. They’re not as high as a fixed bed gate, but high enough for your child not to roll over in their sleep.

Advantages of using a portable bed rail

So what are the advantages of using travel bed rails for kids? Even if your kids are used to sleeping without a bed guard at home, beds in an unfamiliar environment might pose some difficulty at night. With travel side rails for bed you won’t have any issues. Portable bed rails for toddlers are also perfect for sleepovers at the grandparents or at a friend’s house.

Portable toddler bed rails for travel

  • turn any bed into child’s bed
  • are lightweight and hardly take up any space
  • install in seconds
  • ensure your child has a safe place to sleep
  • make sure you sleep as well, because you child won’t fall out of bed

Cosleeping with travel bed bumpers

Portable bed rails for travel are also great for co-sleeping. If you use one on the side and one in the middle, you can create a safe section for your baby or toddler to sleep together with you in the big bed. You can also put it in the middle of a double or queen-sized bed to create two separate sleep sections for two older kids to sleep together without waking each other at night. This is also a perfect solution if your kids are at the age that they don’t really want to sleep in one bed together anymore.

The best travel bed guard

Obviously we all have our preferences, but what’s the best travel bed rail for kids in our opinion? Personally, we prefer the Delta Children Inflatable Safety Guard . The Delta Children toddler bed guard for travel can support weight up to 220 lbs (99kg) and is 5 inches high. It’s completely phthalates, BPA and lead-free. It comes with a compact foot pump, making it quick and easy to inflate. If you want to limit your luggage, it’s also easy to inflate by simply blowing it up.

We like that we can easily climb in bed with him at night when he wants us to and don’t have to worry about putting too much weight on the bumper. At 48x7x5 inches (122×17,8×12,7 cm) they don’t really work in a toddler bed because toddler beds are usually quite narrow and the bumper takes up some space. But for a twin or a double bed, these portable bed rails for travel are great.

lightweight travel bed guard

Other bed bumper options

Another option for portable bed rails for toddlers is The Shrunks Inflatable Bed Rail . We prefer the Delta Children bumper because it’s a full inch higher, but The Shrunks has won numerous awards and get great reviews. If you prefer foam toddler bed bumpers, we’d recommend you to take a look at the DreamyPanda Safety Bed Rail Bumper or the Hiccapop Foam Bed Bumpers .

Folding kids’ bed rails & rail guards.

Keep your toddler safe in bed with these kids' bed rails & rail guards. The rails are designed to accommodate thicker mattresses and only require minimal assembly. You can use the rails on twin, full, queen and platform beds.

Easy to Assemble If you push the two small knobs on the arms of these kids' bed rails & rail guards, you'll be able to fold the rails down.

Buying Guide

At some point, it will be time for your toddler to move from the crib to a bed, but that move can bring worry for parents. You won’t want your child to roll out of bed in the night, but without the safety of the crib’s high sides, there are no guarantees.

That’s where bed rails can help. These guards are designed to keep your baby securely in place throughout the night. If the bed is immovable and pushed snugly against the wall with no gap in between, you may be able to get away with just one rail. But if not, you’ll need one on each side to provide security.

There are safety concerns when it comes to bed rails, though. It’s important to make sure the rail you choose is sized for the type of bed your child will be using. Look not only for whether it’s sized for twin, full and/or queen beds, but also measure the length of the bed and check how much of each side of the bed the rail will cover.

Note that Consumer Reports and child safety experts only recommend safety rails for adult bed sizes. However, you can find some products specifically designed to be used with the smaller, lighter mattresses used on toddler beds and in cribs: just make sure to check carefully.

It’s also important to look at the design of the rail itself. For one thing, it should not create a gap that children can get trapped in. You may also want to look at how it attaches to the bed —  hardware can make installation more difficult but is recommended to make sure rails don’t pull away from the bed during use.  Ideally, the rail will feature a solid frame but have a softer surface so if your child bumps into it, it won’t cause injury. Many rails may also have rounded edges to reduce the risk of injury. These small safety features can make a big difference, especially if you have more rambunctious children.

Key Takeawy

What to look for.

  • It’s time to switch to a toddler bed when your child reaches 35 inches in height or starts trying to climb out of the crib. A rail can provide that extra peace of mind as your child transitions to a more grown-up sleeping space.
  • Look at how the rail will attach to the bed. Some can slide around, so if you’re concerned about safety, choose one that either uses a strap or screws to clamp firmly onto the bed.
  • You’ll want to be able to pull the rail out of the way when the child is climbing in and out, or when you’re ready for a bedtime story. Most modern bed rails will easily fold down and back up again.
  • Assembly is an important consideration. Pay attention to how easy it will be to set the rails up once they arrive. Some bed rail manufacturers even provide videos to demonstrate the installation process.
  • When looking at how the rail attaches to the mattress, make sure it won’t lead to an uncomfortable sleeping experience for your little one.
  • Bed rails come in different color options. You’ll typically see them in either white or gray, but there are also many brightly-colored options, if you’re trying to match a color scheme.

Did you know babies don’t dream? At least, that’s what research shows. Neuroscientists now believe that even though infants and toddlers do enter REM sleep, their brains are busy building neural pathways at this age. In fact, babies spend half their sleep time in REM sleep.

Dreams don’t come along until around age two, and even then, dreams are just snapshots. Only when they get older do their dreams become less like a slideshow and more like a movie, as your dreams are as an adult. Between the ages of 5 and 9, dreams become more like videos, and at that age, children start to be able to remember their dreams upon waking.

These handy gadgets help prevent night-time falls, supporting your child as they get used to transitioning from the confines of a cot to the freedom of an open bed.

A toddler bed guard can be used from around 18 months, for as long as your little one needs it. Some children get used to their big bed very quickly, whereas others may benefit from the added protection of a guard or rail for a few more years.

Whether you use a fixed bed rail or something more portable, these products can help your toddlers stay comfortably put, giving you peace of mind and ultimately a better night’s rest.

To help us pick the very best bed guards for you, we asked parents which ones they use with their toddler and would genuinely recommend, to provide you with honest feedback.

With a bed guard you can rest easy whilst your child sleeps, but, if you need assistance in helping them get to sleep, take a look at our best sleep aids and white noise machines . Additionally, for extra peace of mind, you may wish to keep the baby monitor on for a little longer while your child sleeps. When do you need a child bed guard?

Bed guards and rails are aimed at toddlers, with the recommended age usually being from 18 months to 5 years. Many manufacturers advise not using a bed rail on a sleeping surface that is more than 60cm from the floor, so they wouldn’t be suitable for the top bed of a bunk. Although moving from a cot to a toddler bed is an exciting milestone, there is no reason to rush the transition unless your child is endangering themselves by trying to climb out of their cot. It's often better to keep them in their cot for as long as possible.

Remember, toddler bed guards are not designed to be used with younger babies, as safe sleep guidelines say, for babies under 12 months, to keep their sleep space clear of anything that could pose a suffocation risk.

Keeley Black, a baby safety expert who runs SafeCircle babysitting, advises that toddler bed guards can be used by children up to around 5 years old. However, it may be a good idea to remove them earlier if your child is climbing over them to get out of their bed, to prevent falls and injury. The guard could be used on a single bed instead, which would give the child space at the bottom of the bed to get out safely.

What are the different types of toddler bed guards?

There are various styles of child bed guards. Some are more rigid and solid, for example those made of wood, which provide a straight-forward barrier, similar to a bunk bed rail, to stop children from falling over the side.

Other toddler bed guards are made from foam or fabric such as mesh, so they are softer and less rigid if children like to sleep up against the side.

You can also find inflatable bed guards that can be particularly handy for travelling, as they can be deflated and transported away with you.

Baby safety expert Keeley says, "The bed guard should have a clear airflow around it, so try and use mesh, wooden slatted or low rise guards where possible."

What to look for when choosing the best bed guard for your child

Safety – Baby expert, Dean Smith, director of For Your Little One has a few tips for choosing a bed guard safely. He said to always measure your toddler's bed first; the guard should not prevent them from getting in and out of bed and it should sit firmly to cover the middle of the bed, not the whole length. Similarly, he advises measuring your toddler's mattress height as you need to find one that is suitable. He also suggests making sure the bed guard is breathable as your toddler may be breathing up against the side of it during the night.

Size – As our expert Dean previously mentioned, measure your child’s bed and mattress and compare this with the dimensions of the guard you intend to buy. We've listed the dimensions of each product in our top 10 so you can make sure it won't be too long or short for your child's new bed.

Bed position – Where in the bedroom will the bed be? If the bed's in the centre of the room, with both sides open, you might need 2 bed rails to secure both sides. If the bed is placed alongside a wall then you have a natural barrier on one side and only need to guard the other.

Compatibility with your child's bed – Some child bed guards are not compatible with certain types of beds, especially divans, so check before you buy.

Portability – Do you want a rail that's permanently fixed to the bed? Or one that could be moved for times when your toddler is sleeping elsewhere, such as holidays and family visits?

Ease of cleaning – The wooden rails have the advantage of being easy to wipe down, whereas the fabric rails can usually be hand washed.

Material – Bed guards come in all different materials; inflatable, foam or wooden. It's important to consider which type of bed guard would work well for your child and their bed.

Here's our pick of 10 of the best toddler bed guards

1. costway 24-height adjustable toddler bed guard rail, £44.95, – best for adjustable height.

Costway_Bed_Guard_Adjustable_2

Dimensions: H73-102cm x W25cm x L196cm | Material: Metal frame and netting | Colours available: Grey

This bed rail is great for mattresses of all heights thanks to its 24 adjustable height settings, meaning it can range from 73 to 102cm high. It can also be lifted/lowered independently from each side making it really convenient when parents only have one hand free to help their child into bed.

The breathable mesh ensures good ventilation for your child, whilst also being transparent enough to see through to check they are safe and sleeping soundly. At 196cm it's the longest bed guard in our round up, which makes it a great choice for added safety when using with a single, double or king-size bed – however this does mean it is too long to use with a standard toddler-size bed. If you're looking for a guard to use during play as well as rest this is a good choice as the guards can link together to transform a bed into a safe play pen.

Safety features like the double lock to stop children lowering the guard themselves and the anti-collision sponge bar along the bottom are reassuring touches and we like the addition of a handy side pocket for storing books or wipes.

Assembly is required but no other tools are needed and it shouldn't take too much time.

Pros: Adjustable height, soft material, can lift each side independently, storage pocket, can link to create a play pen Cons: Quite large, not ideal for travel, assembly required, won't fit a toddler bed

Available from: B&Q , Amazon , and Costway

2. Ikea NATTAPA Guard Rail, £17

– Best for budget-buy

Ikea NATTAPA Guard Rail

Dimensions: H26cm x W4cm x L96cm | Material: Fibreboard | Colours available: White

Trust Ikea to come up with one of the most simple, stylish and affordable bed guards out there. It's a small and non-intrusive way to help keep your toddler a little more secure in those early months after moving to a bed.

The Nattapa is easy to fit, and can be attached to cots with an open side, extendable beds and regular beds — so it can grow with your child. It doesn't have arms that reach under the bed, making it slightly less sturdy than those that do, but it is smaller overall so doesn't need such a strong support. Admittedly, the Nattapa is quite a hard, rigid addition to the bed, but it doesn't look too overpowering in its neutral white design. It can easily be wiped clean with a dry cloth.

Note that this bed guard will fit bed sides with a thickness of 18-22mm. If you rotate the brackets, you can fix the guard rail to beds that are 44mm thick. It must be mounted so that the end lies against the headboard, without any gap.

Pros: Good value, easy to attach, easy to clean Cons: Does not fit all beds, hard material, not as high as other bed guards

Available from: Ikea

3. BabyDan Wooden Bed Guard Rail, £69.99

– best wooden bed guard.

BabyDan Wooden Bed Guard Rail

Dimensions : H42cm x L90cm | Material: Wood | Colours available: White

This solid and stylish wooden bed guard rail from BabyDan is made from furniture grade wood, so has a nice quality to it and should be long-lasting. But most importantly, it attaches and detaches easily, with no tools required.

BabyDan also says it's suitable for all beds (not including cribs and upper bunk beds), so you can be reassured that it'll stay secure no matter your child's style of bed.

Parent tester Tania, mum of 2, aged 14 weeks and 3, used this with her toddler and loved that you could take the side off, saying "It worked well for us; it was easy to clean and looked good."

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing, strong and sturdy, no tools needed to attach, easy to clean Cons: Not suitable for upper bunk beds, hard material

Available from: John Lewis

4. Safety 1st Portable Bed Rail, £24.95

– best for travel.

Safety 1st Portable Bed Rail

Dimensions: H42 x L106cm (assembled), H42cm x L66cm (folded) | Material: Metal frame and netting | Colours available: Dark grey and blue

This bed guard has a standard mesh design with great functionality. It can fold down to allow easy access to the bed, and it can also be folded (down to 66cm) to make it more compact and portable – great for taking with you on family visits or holiday. No assembly is required – ideal if you want something simple to install.

This bed rail is compatible with mattresses with a length greater than 156cm and a thickness from 10 to 24cm and fits slatted and standard beds.

Parent tester Joanna, mum of 2, aged 5 and 3, used this bed guard with her children when they were slightly younger and loved how "it was really sturdy, simple to use and folded down smaller for travel which was a real bonus. It did what it needed to do for both our kids."

Pros: Can be folded down compactly for travel, easy access to the bed, good value Cons: Hard metal frame, not the most visually appealing

Available from: Amazon and Smyths

5. Dreambaby Phoenix Foldable Bed Rail, £34.99

– best for easy cleaning.

Dreambaby Phoenix Foldable Bedrail

Dimensions: H45.5cm x L110cm (H45.5cm x L55cm when folded)| Material: Metal frame and netting | Colours available: White and grey

The Dreambaby Phoenix Foldable bed rail is super easy to clean thanks to its removable and washable cover. It also makes getting your toddler in and out of bed easy, with its convenient fold down sides – this will be handy when making the bed, too.

The bed rail is fairly easy to install but there is assembly required. It can be quite compact, however it does have to be disassembled to fit in its carry bag so it isn't the speediest travel option.

It's suitable for divans and slatted bed bases and for mattresses between 10 to 25cm thick: it can be slightly adjusted depending on the mattress thickness.

Parent tester Lorne, mum of kids aged 2 and 4, uses this with her toddler and said, "I like the breathable mesh and that the cover is washable too. It's very sturdy and fits my child's single bed well."

Pros: Easy to clean, can be folded to a compact size Cons: Requires assembly, hard metal frame

Available from: Amazon and Dreambaby

6. Hippychick Dream Tubes Bed Guards, £50.52

– best two-sided bed guard.

Hippychick dream tubes bed guard

Dimensions: H90 x L195cm (Dream Tubes single sheet), H70cm x L140cm (Dream Tubes cot bed sheet) | Material: Inflatable and cotton | Colours available: White

Designed by 2 mums after 1 too many sleepless nights, inflatable Dream Tubes are a slightly different option for keeping your child from rolling out of bed. Simply blow them up then pop them in the pockets of a special sheet – either cot bed or single bed size – to make a cosy barrier to help kids stay put. We love the fact that this product includes the custom sheet, which effectively keeps the bumpers (2 per pack) in place.

These are great for if your child's bed is not against a wall as you get 2 bumpers and can protect them from falling out of bed both sides. The sheet that covers the inflatable tube is also machine washable. Compared to the harder wooden and metal/mesh frames, this is much softer if your child kicks it or rolls into it.

The bumpers are very lightweight and fold up to a small handy size, making transport a doddle. You can take them with you everywhere – no more rearranging the furniture to prevent kids from rolling out of bed.

Pros: Double-sided, soft material, compact fold Cons: Needs to be inflated, has to be used with special sheet, not as high as other bed guards

Available from: Amazon , Hippychick and Room to Grow

7. Cuggl Bed Rail, £25

– best for colour choice.

Cuggl_Blue_Bed_Rail_Guard_1

Dimensions: H46cm x L92cm | Material: Metal frame and netting | Colours available: Blue, pink and grey

If style is an important consideration for you, this modern bed guard is a great choice. Available in blue, pink or light grey, it's an easy way to add a pop of colour or to blend in with your child's bedroom colour scheme.

As well as looking good, it's safe and easy-to-use, with a simple push button to fold down the panel and allow your child easy access to get in and out their bed. The child safety lock will stop them from lowering the bed guard themselves though.

The Cuggl bed rail attaches to most divan or slatted style single and toddler beds – with mattress between 8-23cm thick – using under mattress poles and straps to fix in place. It's relatively compact and lightweight, making it a convenient choice for travelling or for overnight stays with grandparents.

It's worth noting this does require some assembly before use, however illustrated step-by-step instructions are included to help.

Pros: Choice of colours, lightweight, easy to access bed with push button, can be used for travelling Cons: Requires assembly, not suitable for use with double beds, hard metal frame

Available from: Argos

8. Safetots Extra Wide Bed Rail, £39.90

– best extra-long bed guard.

Safetots mesh bed guard

Dimensions: H40cm x L140cm | Material: Metal and mesh | Colours available: White, grey and natural

Available in natural, white and grey, the Safetots Extra Wide Bed Rail provides a little bit more coverage, if you want to make extra sure that there's no room to tumble out of bed. It's another rail with the handy fold-down feature and it also comes with a travel bag to make taking it on trips that bit easier. However, it does have to be dismantled first.

This guard is suitable for cot beds, single beds and double beds with a minimum mattress length of 90cm and maximum mattress thickness of 20cm.

Pros: Provides extra long coverage, compact fold, handy fold-down feature Cons: Requires assembly, has a hard metal frame

Available from: Amazon and Safetots

9. Lindam Easy Fit Folding Bed Guard, £20.76

– best for easy installation.

Lindam Easy Fit Folding Bed Guard

Dimensions: H27cm x W9cm x L52.2cm | Material: Metal and mesh | Colours available: Grey

The affordable Lindam Easy Fit Bed Guard has a very simple design, making it easy to install, requiring no tools. It also has a standard fold-down mechanism (with secure locking) to allow you to access your child and change sheets more easily.

This bed rail is compatible with 76cm to 90cm thick mattresses and suitable for slatted, divan and ensemble bed types, but is not suitable for beds where the mattress sits within a raised frame or upper bunk beds.

Pros: Easy to install, good value, handy fold-down feature Cons: Not compatible with all beds, has a hard metal frame

Available from: Amazon and Munchkin

10. Banbaloo Rail Bed Bumper, £24.99

– best for comfort.

Banbaloo Rail Bed Bumper

Dimensions: H12cm x W19cm x L134cm | Material: Memory foam | Colours available: White

For ultimate comfort, this memory foam bumper is great. If your child rolls too close to the end of the bed, they will not bump themselves on a hard metal frame, they will be gently pushed back to the middle of the bed by the soft foam bumper. It also has a non-slip cover which ensures it stays in place under the sheet.

Another great thing about this bed bumper is that it's water-resistant, so no need to worry if there are any accidents, and, if there are, it has a machine washable cover.

This option is great for allowing your child more freedom in their bed, ensuring they are safe without feeling caged in. It also means you can access your child very easily without having to move a barrier or panel out of the way.

Parent tester Natalie, mum of a 7 and 4 year old, used the foam bumper with her toddler and said, "I found them to be great and not too cumbersome. Very easy to use."

Pros: Very soft and comfortable, allows your child to feel free, water resistant Cons: Not as high as other bed guards, hard to store due to size, not suitable for travelling

Available from: Amazon

How did we choose our 10 of the Best?

Tips for using a bed guard safely.

Baby expert Dean Smith also gave us some top tips to ensure that once you've bought a bed guard, you install and use it safely. He says:

  • Place the bed guard half-way down the bed so that it sits in the middle. This guarantees the safest place, as it prevents your toddler from rolling out whilst sleeping at either end of the bed.
  • If possible, put one side of your toddler's bed against the wall . This prevents the need to buy multiple bed guards, and offers a natural guard instead.
  • Make sure the bed guard is properly fitted . Follow the manufacturer's instructions and test its strength by pushing on the guard from inside the bed. If the bed guard falls or moves, it hasn't been safely fitted, and should be fixed before your toddler uses it.
  • Don't cover the bed guard in fabrics or clothing . This could make the bed guard dangerous, as it could prevent your child from being able to breathe when against the guard. Always make sure that the bed guard is completely breathable, and there's nothing preventing air from getting in and out.
  • Take the bed guard with you if you're going away , even if it's just for a night. Being in a different bed is likely to throw your toddler off when it comes to safely manoeuvring around their surroundings, so bringing the bed guard with you to make sure they sleep safely and soundly is vital.

"I am so thrilled and have continued to be about The Safety Sleeper I've had now for 3 years. Last weekend I had to unexpectedly get a hotel room for 2 nights because an ice storm around my area knocked down power lines, leaving me with no power for 4 days. I had to get a hotel room for myself and 4 kids so I packed up The Safety Sleeper in it's handy suitcase and took it to the hotel with me. It worked out perfectly for my special needs son who has down syndrome and autism. I cannot tell you how much it eliminated even more headaches than I already was having as a single mom of 4. Thank you so much!!!"

TRAVEL TIPS FROM OPERATION AUTISM

While traveling....

  • Vibrating massagers
  • Weighted lap pad, vest, or blanket. Try the Weight Mate by Abram's Nation , available in multiple weights.
  • The Fidget Folder by Abram's Nation is a sensory therapy product for at home or on-the-go designed to help individuals with special needs accomplish behavioral and physical goals, aiding in sensory motor skill development.
  • Hard candy (if this does not pose a safety hazard for your child)
  • Vibrating bean bags or teethers if your child needs additional oral input
  • Consult with your child’s Occupational Therapist for more specific sensory strategies to use
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Flushable wipes
  • Extra batteries and chargers
  • Changes of clothing in case of accidents
  • Plastic bags
  • Medicine for nausea or other physical ailments
  • Extra headphones

Even with all of these preventive strategies, you can’t ensure a perfect trip. Consider your child’s needs and set realistic goals for how far you travel each day. Break the trip up if possible. Trying to rush travel can lead to more stress and anxiety and increase the chances for something to go wrong or for you to forget something. Take some deep breaths and relax.

While Traveling by Car

  • Use a behind-the-seat organizer to store your child’s belongings. If this is within your child’s reach, then this will enable you to focus on your driving and maintain an organized car.
  • Take frequent rest stops at designated rest areas off interstate highways or at gas stations. Allow your child to run around outside if it is safe to do so. If your child needs a visual cue to know when the next stop will be, bring along a timer and set it for 60 minutes. This way, your child knows that when the timer goes off, they will be able to get out of the car. Alternately, you can ask an older child to time the interval on the clock in the car and then pull the car over for a break at the intended time.
  • If you know your child enjoys playgrounds, research playgrounds along your route in advance. Tell your child that the next stop will be at a playground so they will have something to look forward to.
  • Try to plan your trip around times of the day that are routine nap times or bed times. You may choose to start your trip at night when your child normally goes to sleep. This will (hopefully) ensure your child will be asleep for a good portion of the ride.
  • Get a map and draw a line along your route. Show your child each city and state you are passing through. Use a line to show your child where you are “now” and where you need to drive before you get to your final destination.
  • If your child has an oversensitivity to sound, take a look at this transcript from the National Public Radio weekly show, Car Talk Hosts Ray and Tom Magliozzi (otherwise known as Click & Clack) discuss cost-effective options for minimizing road noises that can be painful to children with autism.
  • Make customized activity bags for each child. If the trip is long, give your child a couple of items at a time so that the novelty does not wear off shortly after the trip begins. Have some old as well as new toys and activities in each bag. Examples include: a new coloring book, hand-held games like ball mazes or Rubik’s cubes, interactive books (with flaps, hidden pictures, or stickers), Legos, a soft squeeze ball.
  • Pre-load an iPad with old and new games for single or multiplayers, and kid-friendly television shows and movies.
  • Bring headphones with a variety of music to include calm instrumental songs for relaxation, kid-friendly tunes, and any other favorites.
  • Bingo game: before your trip, prepare a Bingo sheet using pictures or words of things frequently seen on the road.
  • Alphabet game: take turns finding things that start with a designated letter until you get through the entire alphabet.
  • License plate game: write down all the license plates you see from different states and see how many you can find by the end of your trip.
  • See Moms Minivan for more car game ideas that you can modify for your child’s age and developmental level.

While Traveling by Plane

It is a good idea to have earplugs or noise-canceling headphones for your child. If this is your child’s first time on an airplane, be sure to discuss the sights and sounds of the airplane ride prior to and during your flight.

  • Try to minimize the number of connecting flights. It is easier to find a direct flight if you book early.
  • Children with autism often have difficulty coping with the “popping” of their ears as the airplane ascends and descends. Many children do not understand this phenomenon. Give your child gum, hard candy, chew toys, or a drink during this portion of the plane ride; this encourages swallowing and reduces the effects of their ears popping.
  • Contact the airport where you will be departing, explain your child’s diagnosis, and request a time to come to the airport and do a “dry run” of what your child should expect. The airport may allow you to come during a time of day where it is less crowded and let you walk through exactly what will happen on the day you leave, even allowing you to walk your child through the security gate.
  • If there is a layover at an airport, research the airport in advance to see if there is a child’s indoor play area. More and more airports are offering these. Take advantage of the play area, if available, and let your child run around, climb, play, and slide in order to get some energy out and be ready to sit for the next leg of your trip.
  • Some airports have a USO Lounge that serves as a quiet haven for military personnel and their families. These lounges provide free amenities, including snacks, internet access, and TVs. Be sure to have your Military and/or Dependent ID cards handy.
  • If your child is a picky eater or has allergies and if your airline will serve one or more meals during the coming flight, contact the airline in advance to ask if they offer special meals or have an alternate meal option. For example, you may find that the vegetarian meal provides more food that your child will eat than the regular meal. Do not forget to plan for favorite snacks ahead of time as well.
  • Arrive at the airport in plenty of time for your flight. Explain to the airline at check-in that your child has autism and request bulkhead seating (at the front of the economy section). Provide proof of diagnosis as reinforcement. The front seat will give you a little extra leg room and will likely put you close to a restroom. If looking out the window will be interesting for your child, request a window seat. On the other hand, if your child may become anxious at the thought of being in the air, request an aisle seat or an inside seat. If the flight will not be full, request a row to yourself.
  • Go through the security checkpoint early to avoid the crowds. Give the security guard an information card that explains autism and increases their understanding of why your child may not follow the instructions.
  • Board the airplane at the first call for special boarding. Having a child with autism requires extra time to find your seat and get comfortable. This will also give you extra time to briefly talk to the airline attendant(s) about your child’s special needs. Give them an information card if necessary.
  • Bring earplugs or noise-canceling headphones for your child.
  • If you have a child who is a frequent wanderer, it may greatly benefit you to invest in a type of personal locator product in the form of a watch or attachable belt unit. With all of the other things you need to keep track of, such as luggage, carry-on bags, other children, and plane tickets, this may ease your worries should your child wander out of sight when you turn away for a moment to dig in your bag.
  • A less expensive way to track your child is to get a military-style dog tag made with your child’s information (name, age, parents’ names and contact information, allergies, and other pertinent information, such as specifying if your child is nonverbal). You can also get a bracelet made with the same information.
  • Or, get creative and pin the same information on a small laminated index card attached to your child’s shirt or shoelace. For an older, verbal child, teach the child their name, age, parents’ names, and a phone number to call. Role play a scenario in which your child accidentally gets lost. Discuss the “Information Booth” at airports and how your child can find one. Write key words down for your child on an index card, such as “Information” and “Lost.”
  • Carry a recent photo of your child to show to security personnel in case your child wanders.

Phil & Ted’s Traveller Full-Size Travel Crib

Why shelly recommends it:.

It only weighs 7 lbs.–compare that with other play yards! Add to that its terrific versatility and its hard to find a better travel bed. Use it from birth on up through three years (or more), indoors and out. Breathable mesh panels let you take this to the park and beach just as easily as Grandma’s house (where rubber feet will protect her floors).

The self-inflating air mattress works much like a Therm-a-Rest (or backpacker’s mattress), providing good insulation from the cold ground as well as padding from hard floors. An optional UV-protective cover fits over the top to offer protection outdoors (though you’ll have to throw a beach towel or something over the sides for sun protection now that they are 100% mesh (please let me know when you’ve finished thinking that one through, Phil&Ted).

The Traveler also has a zipping side panel to allow in and out access for playtime on the beach, and for older children who are ready to come and go on their own from their own travel bed. It stands 51″ x 24.8″ x 31″ when open, and folds to 24.8″ x 8.6″ square packed in its carrying case.  Find it online at:   Amazon.com

BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light

At 11 lbs. the Travel Crib Light weighs a little more than Phil & Ted’s full-size travel crib, costs around $100 more, and you probably won’t be able to use it as long (it also doesn’t offer the unzipped side self-access for older children).

That said, the easy to assemble BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is worth it to some parents for the 1-minute (or less) set-up time, space savings when folded and set-up, and eco-certified softer fabrics–every bit of which can be gently washed in the machine.

In theory, the BabyBjorn Travel Light can be used for newborns up to around 3 years old (older children may be happier with the longer mattress of the Phil & Ted or Peapod Plus, both of which they can freely come and go from when they’re ready). Measures 32” x 44” x 24” set up, and is 19″ X 24″ X 6″ packed in its travel case.  Find it online at:   Amazon.com

The Peapod Baby Bed for Travel

Peapod portable baby travel bed

Helps create your “tent within a tent” safely on cold camping trips, and gives a clean, safe place for baby to snooze bug-free, whether indoors or out. Folds into its own carrying case at 16.5″ diameter and 3″ thick, then pops up when needed to 46″L x 28″W x 18″H.

The Peapod Plus weighs less than 3 lbs. Although this is recommended for  1 to 3 years, you may prefer the slightly larger Peapod Plus, which can be used on through the preschool years (see below).  Find it online at:   Amazon.com

The Peapod Plus Travel Bed

Peapod Plus portable baby travel bed

The Peapod Plus can be used from infancy well through preschool, and includes a lightweight sleeping bag. In addition to the UV mesh found in the smaller Peapod, the Plus also has roll-down nylon sides for added wind protection.

Other differences: The poles used in the Plus are thinner and more lightweight than the very heavy-duty ones used in the original above, keeping its weight down, but at the cost of some stability (if you have rowdy rompers in the house, you may prefer the original Peapod). Travels at 19″ diameter and 6.5″ thick in its carrying case. Unfolds to 52.5″ x 34″ x 25″.

Find it online at:       Amazon.com

Fold ‘n Go Infant Travel Bassinet

munchkin brica fold n go travel bassinet

This portable folding infant bassinet sets up in 10 seconds (okay it took us 20 the first time, but…) and features a rigid steel frame with four-point Safe-T-Lock System , providing a sturdier alternative to some baby travel beds with soft sides. Mesh side panels also allow for better air circulation.

The Brica Fold N Go bassinet folds to 22″ at its widest point x 16″ x 2″ thick and weighs less than 3 lbs. Unfolds to 30.5″L x 22″W x 10″H with an included 29″ x 18″ foam mattress with cover. For newborns up to 3 months or 15 lbs., or when baby starts pushing up.   Find deals on the Brica Fold ‘n Go Infant Travel Bassinet online at:   Amazon.com

The Snuggle Nest by Baby Delight Folding Infant Travel Bed

The very popular Snuggle Nest has been improved with new safety features, including ventilation through breathable sidewalls and an optional 1.5″ incline wedge to help elevate baby’s head–very helpful should a little nose get stuffy during your travels.

This model of Snuggle Nest plays soft music or womb-like sounds and includes a convenient night light you’ll be glad to have when checking on baby in an unfamiliar hotel room. Cover can be removed and washed.

What I don’t like about this newer model is that the wrap-around bumper means it won’t last as longer for taller/longer babies, and the new “vented” side walls actually look less breathable than the earlier mesh used.

Still, for travel with a swaddled infant, this may be just what you need. Open dimensions are 17.5 x 6.5″ x 18″. Folds in half for travel. Weighs 3.5 lbs.   Find deals on the Snuggle Nest online at:     Amazon.com

First Years Close and Secure Folding Infant Travel Co-Sleeper

First Years cosleeper used for travel with infants

Baby travel beds with a built-in, battery-powered night light are few and far between. This co-sleeper also adds an extra measure of protection, buffering your baby from head to toe, making it a suitable sleeping spot for infants both in the “family bed” and out.

As mentioned, it features a built-in night light, which can be helpful for late-night checks, especially when staying in new and unfamiliar places. Machine washable cover and sheet included. Overall dimensions are 26″ x 16″ x 6″ (24″L within bumpers). Folds to 19″ x 17″ x 7 1/2″ with carrying handle.   Find it online at:   Amazon.com

Summer Infant Travel Bed with Toy Bar and Shoulder Strap

Summer Infant folding travel bed for infant

Great for the airport and possibly even on the airplane. It starts out folded into a travel bag with a shoulder strap and bottle pockets on each end. Then, when you need a clean, safe spot for baby to stretch out while you await your flight, just unfold this portable baby bed and the toy bar is already in place.

What’s that? There’s NOT a changing table in the lavatory on your flight? No problem. This will give you a clean, workable surface with no-roll sidewalls to use either on the airplane seat, floor, or–if the toilet design suits–in the lavatory over the closed lid. Oh, right! And when you get to the hotel, you’ll also have a handy baby travel bed. 😉   Find it online at:    Amazon.com

The Shrunks Inflatable Portable Bed for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Great solution for occasional visits to Grandma’s house, car trips, and camping (but at 6 lbs. and still bulky when deflated, you probably don’t want to pack this portable bed on the plane).

The air mattress insert is the same size as a standard crib mattress, and you can use it with your own crib/toddler bed sheet sets. (If your child is already pushing the limits of the toddler bed, take a look at the kid-size inflatable travel bed that fits a twin-size sheet .)

The inflated bumper with side rails allows you to tuck blankets deeply to help them stay put. Inflates in just 30 seconds using the included electric (plug in) pump. Phthalate-Safe, BpA-Safe and Lead-Safe.   Find it online at:    Amazon

The Shrunks Inflatable Portable Bed Rails

inflatable bed rails for travel with kids

Make the most of extra beds where you find them by easily adding these portable bed safety bumpers to hotel beds, guest beds, cruise ship berths, and then some.

Inflate with the included foot pump and slip under the side of the bed’s fitted sheet to prevent roll-off. Deflated, these bed rails take up very little space in the suitcase and they weigh in at only 1.8 lbs for the pair. Phthalate-Safe, BpA-Safe and Lead-Safe.   Find it online at:    Amazon.com
