So, to provide an easy and quick access to Shimla, Britishers started the Kalka Shimla narrow-gauge train in November 1903. Lord Curzon enjoyed the first train ride and since then, the train has been running on an everyday basis, except for the maintenance breaks in between.

The Kalka Shimla Toy Train begins its journey from Kalka railway station, situated in Panchkula district of Haryana. At 656 meters, it takes its first climb and starts covering a track length of 96 km to reach Shimla, which is positioned at an altitude of 6,812 feet amidst the beautiful hills and mystical woods.

The 18 stations it covers are: Kalka, Taksal, Gumman, Koti, Sonwara, Dharampur, Kumarhatti, Barog, Solan, Salogra, Kandaghat, Kanoh, Kathleegat, Shoghi, Taradevi, Jutoh, Summer Hill and Shimla. At every station, the train halts for some time, so passengers can relish the taste of local food along with enjoying tea and snacks on the way.

Offering one of the most sought-after train journeys in India, the Rail Motor Car is a single coach train that operates from Kalka to Shimla and vice-versa. Having an accommodation capacity of 14 to 18 passengers, the Rail Motor Car also provides an express service with food on its way. For all those who don’t want to get up early for food, the train stops at Barog station for approximately 20 minutes. Here you can enjoy your morning meal at just INR 50, which includes 2 slices of bread, a cup of coffee and butter. Shivalik Deluxe Express

The Shivalik Deluxe Express luxury Toy Train, equipped with a carpet, large glass windows, plush cushioned seats, upgraded toilets and soothing music offers a pleasant ride from Kalka to Shimla and vice-versa. It is beautifully designed with all wooden work and features wall to wall carpeting with curtains and portraits.

In addition, the train has a comfortable seating arrangement along with an accommodation capacity of 120 passengers in total. You can reverse the orientation of the seats or put your stuff at the foldable side table to make the most of your journey.

Enjoy overlooking the panoramic views of the scenery from wide-glass windows while having your food on the way, which includes 2 pieces of brown bread, 1 veg cutlet, bread jam, bread butter and ketchup sachets.

Also known as a standard train to explore the beauty of the hill-station positioned in Himachal Pradesh, the Kalka Shimla Himalayan Queen Toy Train comes with first and second-class carriages. It runs all 7 days in a week and covers the required distance at a speed of 18 Kmph. The train is equipped with only one chair coach and has standard car seats to offer – to make the journey of the passengers an enjoyable experience.

Though the food service is not available in Himalayan Queen train, people can get their food at any of the 9 main stations it stops. These stations include Barog, Dharampur, Jutogh, Solan, Summer Hill, Kumarhatti, Taradevi, Kandaghat and Salogra. Some of the halts are for nearly 5-10 minutes, which simply means that you can step out of the train to capture as many photos as you can – with mesmerizing landscapes and valleys at your backdrop.

To enjoy the most comfortable train journey of your life, better to go with either the Rail Motor Car or Shivalik Deluxe Express. Unless you’re travelling in a first-class carriage of the Himalayan Queen Toy Train, you might face a few inconveniences like unhygienic toilets, hard bench seats and lack of enough space to keep your luggage.

Shivalik Queen and Shivalik Palace Tourist Coach are two more trains that operate on the same route. Step back in time aboard the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that connects the Indian plains to the ‘Queen of Hills ,’ Shimla. Built in 1903, this toy train ride is one of India’s most incredible feats of engineering covering a staggering 102 tunnels, 864 bridges and 919 stunning curves.

Spanning some 60 miles, the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is said to be one of the most scenic railway journeys in India. And, with a route that encompasses a vast display of awe-inspiring landscapes, it’s easy to see why. This journey runs on a narrow gauge from Kalka to Shimla, treating passengers with breathtaking views of rugged mountains, lush pine forests, waterfalls, valleys and picture-perfect hill stations along the way that will definitely tempt you to disembark and bask in their beauty. The whole journey takes about five and a half hours.

Soon after the first Anglo-Gurkha war, Shimla (then, called as Simla) was established by the British. In 1864, the town became the summer capital of the British Empire and even served as the British army’s headquarters. But the only snag was connectivity – to reach Shimla, the only mode of transportation was a bullock cart that traversed through mountainous terrain, which was unsteady, dangerous and took a long amount of time. So, for easy and quick access to Shimla, the Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge was started in 1903 and was referred as the ‘British Jewel of the Orient’. The maiden journey of the train was taken by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. And since then, the train has been operating regularly and has become an iconic symbol of Shimla that is cherished by locals and tourists alike.

The Kalka-Shimla train allows passengers to see mesmerizing sights and hamlets that they would have otherwise never witnessed. The route starts from Kalka, located in the Panchkula district of Haryana, from zero metres, winding its way upwards along the narrow track. At 656 metres, the train starts climbing uphill, passing through the 18 stations and reaches Shimla, located at an elevation of 2, 076 metres in the lap of the Himalayas. As the train ascends through steep mountains and curves, its speed slows down.

The 18 stations it stops at are: Taksal (6 km), Gumman (11 km), Koti (17 km), Sonwara (27 km), Dharampur (33 km), Kumarhatti (39 km), Barog (43 km), Solan (47 km), Salogra (53 km), Kandaghat (59 km), Kanoh (65 km), Kathleegat (73 km), Shoghi (78 km), Taradevi (85 km), Jutoh (90 km), Summer Hill (93 km) and finally, Shimla (96 km). At every station, there are tea and snack stalls, so passengers can relish in the local food along the way. The journey is magical, to say the least.

The highlight of the journey is Barog station, which has the longest tunnel (tunnel 33) on the route, stretching 1, 143.61 metres. Also, bridge number 226 is an architectural marvel that passes over a deep valley surrounded by steep hills on both sides. However, it is difficult to see this bridge from the carriage.

Rail Motor Car

This train looks like a bus with a glass roof and can accommodate up to 18 passengers. It is an express service with food on offer, and there is only one stop, at Barog.

The Rail Motor ( 72451 ) departs from Kalka at 5 am and reaches Shimla at 9:20 am.

The Rail Motor ( 72452 ) departs from Shimla at 4:55 pm and reaches Kalka at 9:25 pm.

Shivalik Deluxe Express

This is a super fast train fitted with reversible cushioned seats, carpet, food and soothing music that runs throughout the journey. There are no stops in between, but you can soak up the mesmerizing views from the wide-glass windows that even open.

The Shivalik Delux ( 52451 ) departs from Kalka at 5:20 am and reaches Shimla at 10 am.

The Shivalik Deluxe ( 52452 ) departs from Shimla from 5:50 pm and reaches Kalka at 10:35 pm.

Himalayan Queen

This train service is equipped with standard car seats and has nine halts. Passengers can get off at the stations along the way and nourish their eyes and soul with beautiful scenery.

During high season (May-July, September-October and December-January), due to a heavy tourist influx, several special holiday trains also run on this route.

Kalka Shimla Railway: Toy Train Travel Guide

Taking a trip on the historic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train is like traveling back in time. The railway, built by the British in 1903 to provide access to their summer capital of Shimla, provides one of the most scenic toy train journeys in India . It enlivens passengers as it gradually winds its way steeply upwards along the narrow track, through rugged mountains and pine forests.

The train connects Kalka, just north of Chandigarh, to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh state . The captivating train route runs for 96 kilometers (60 miles) through 20 railway stations, 103 tunnels, 800 bridges, and an incredible 900 curves.

The longest tunnel, which stretches for more than a kilometer, is near the main railway station at Barog. The most spectacular scenery occurs from Barog to Shimla. The train's speed is greatly restricted by the steep gradient that it has to climb, but this allows for plenty of fascinating sightseeing along the way. Be prepared for a five to six hour train ride though!

Tourist Train Services

Four regular tourist train services run on the Kalka Shimla railway. These are:

• Shivalik Deluxe Express -- a premium express train with carpet, wide glass windows, cushioned seats, relaxing music, and upgraded toilets. It fits 120 passengers. Food is provided, and the train only has one stop at Barog.
• Himalayan Queen -- a standard train, with first and second class carriages. Food isn't provided but can be purchased at the nine stations it stops at along the way. Some of the stops are for 5-10 minutes, so this train is the most suitable for those who like to get out and explore. You'll be able to take plenty of photos.
• Rail Motor Car -- uniquely resembles a bus from the time of the Second World War. It's got a transparent roof, and fits only 14 passengers. It's also an express service, with food provided. There is one stop, at Barog. It can be difficult to get tickets though.
• Vistadome Him Darshan Express -- a new train with seven carriages featuring glass roofs and modified windows to provide panoramic views. It is the only train that's air-conditioned.

To have the most comfortable experience, choose either the Shivalik Deluxe Express, Rail Motor Car, or Vistadome trains. Unless you travel in first class, common complains about the Himalayan Queen are overcrowding, hard bench seats, dirty toilets and nowhere to store luggage.

Timetable from Kalka to Shimla

Trains from Kalka to Shimla run daily as follows:

• Kalka-Shimla NG Passenger (52457) -- is for hardcore travelers who don't mind a long journey through the very early hours of the morning. The train departs Kalka at 3.30 a.m and arrives in Shimla at 8.55 a.m., with 16 stops along the way. It has very basic old-style carriages, with first class and unreserved seating.
• Rail Motor Car Special (04505) -- departs Kalka at 5.25 a.m and arrives at 9.25 a.m. See train information.
• Shivalik Deluxe Express Special (04527) -- is timed to connect with the Netaji Express Howrah-Kalka Mail train, which comes from Kolkata via Delhi. It departs Kalka at 5.45 a.m and arrives in Shimla at 10.25 a.m. Although, it commonly reaches Shimla an hour or two late. See train information.
• Kalka-Shimla Special (04529) -- is a general train that departs Kalka at 6.20 a.m and is scheduled to reach Shimla at 11.35 a.m., with 10 stops. However, it usually arrives, on average, about 50 minutes late. The train has first class and AC chair class. People usually opt for this train if tickets are unavailable on the tourist trains. • Vistadome Him Darshan Express/Kalka-Shimla Festival Special (04517) -- departs Kalka at 7 a.m. and arrives in Shimla at 12.55 p.m., with one stop at Barog. See train information .
• Himalayan Queen/Kalka-Shimla Festival Special (04515) -- connects with the early morning Shatabdi train from New Delhi Railway Station. It departs Kalka at 12.10 p.m. and arrives in Shimla at 5.20 p.m. However, in reality the journey can often take up to seven hours. See train information.

• Himalayan Queen/Shimla-Kalka Festival Special (04516) -- departs Shimla at 10.40 a.m. and arrives in Kalka at 4.10 p.m. The train is usually on time. See train information.
• Rail Motor Car Special   (04506) -- departs Shimla at 11.40 a.m. and arrives in Kalka at 4.30 p.m. See train information.
• Shimla-Kalka Passenger (52458) -- departs Shimla at 2.20 p.m. and arrives in Kalka at 8.10 p.m.

• Vistadome Him Darshan Express -- 800 rupees per passenger, one way.
• Kalka-Shimla NG Passenger -- 270 rupees one way for adults in first class, and 135 rupees for children. 25 rupees for unreserved seating.
• Kalka-Shimla NG Express -- 295 rupees one way for adults in first class, and 150 rupees for children. 65 rupees one way for adults in second class, and 25 rupees for children. 25 rupees for unreserved seating.

Extra Holiday Services

In addition to the normal train services, special trains operate during the busy holiday seasons in India. This is usually from May to July, September and October, and December and January.

Special Carriages

There are two heritage carriages that sometimes run on the Shimla-Kalka route as part of the Special Heritage Train. The Shivalik Palace Tourist Coach was built in 1966, while the Shivalik Queen Tourist Coach dates back to 1974. Both carriages were recently refurbished to become part of the new train service, which aims to recreate the bygone era for passengers. Charter tour packages are offered by Indian Railways. Indian Railways has also announced plans to revamp the first class carriages of the Shivalik Deluxe Express.

Train Reservations

Tickets can be booked online on the Indian Railways website or at Indian Railways booking offices. It's recommended that you book as early as possible, especially during the summer months from April to June.

Here's how to make a reservation on the Indian Railways website . The Indian Railways codes for the stations are Kalka "KLK" and Simla (no "h") "SML".

Travel Tips

The best views are on the right side of the train when going to Shimla, and the left side when returning.

If you find it necessary to stay overnight at Kalka, there are very few accommodations to choose from. A better option is to head to Parwanoo, a few kilometers away. Himachal Pradesh Tourism has an unremarkable hotel there ( The Shivalik hotel ). Alternatively, it you want to splurge, Moksha Spa is one of the top Himalayan spa resorts in India.

The fare for an adult in first class is Rs. 470 and in second class is Rs. 255. The fare for a child in first class is Rs. 235 and in second class is Rs. 130.

This is a basic train that has first class and unreserved seating. It stops at 16 stations along the way and takes about six hours to complete the journey. The fare for an adult in first class is Rs. 65 and in unreserved seating is Rs. 10.

This age-old KC 20 steam engine was brought here from Scotland in 1905 and was withdrawn from service in 1971. Then restored in 2003 when the railway track completed its one hundred years. Kalka Shimla Toy Train is a marvel example of engineering introduced in the hills of India. The British built this track to move the summer capital, every year, to the hills and then take it back. This steam train goes for twenty-three kilometers and terminates.

The British built Kalka Shimla Toy Train in 1903 and they brought this steam engine KC 520 from England. The engine kept hauling boogies till 1971 when they withdrew it from the services. In 2003 KSR completed its one hundred years and the authorities restored it to bring it back. Since then it has been running on request.

Our founder Sumit Raj is your companion on this journey. He is the writer of his famous book – A Journey to Shimla by Toy Train for which, in 2011, he walked from Kalka to Shimla and collected a large number of stories and information.

Start from Shimla Railway Station.

Our cars will pick you up from your hotel to drive to Shimla Railway Station from where we board the Steam train. The train leaves in time and leads through the winding curves, tunnels, and bridges. Here begins the fairytale-like journey. The landscape keeps changing, every moment and suddenly it enters a dark tunnel. By the time you realize the effect of the tunnel, it emerges on the other end with a new vista in front of you, perhaps this time on the other side of the compartment.

The Journey

It keeps going and when a railway station arrives, either you see the Station Master standing with a green flag in his hand, that allows the driver to go on. Otherwise, a stopover is required, perhaps because the line ahead is not clear and some other train from the opposite direction is on its way. This gives you sufficient time to pop out of the train and click some nice photos of the area. Also, you may choose to go with your Guide to the Station Master’s office and learn about Neil’s communication system that still works on this age-old railway track.

The Journey Continues

 It will not stop at every station but every station does have a story to tell. So, after one and half hours the journey finally ends at Kaithalighat from where the cars pick you up to bring you back to Shimla.

KALKA SHIMLA RAILWAY::What is a World Heritage Site

World heritage site - kalka shimla railway.

Ambala Division is the proud custodian of "WORLD HERITAGE SITE-KALKA SHIMLA RAILWAY". The heritage status to KSR was awarded on 10 th July, 2008 by UNESCO. Shimla (then spelt Simla) was settled by the British shortly after the first Anglo- Gurkha war and is located at 7,116 feet(2,169m) in the foothills of the Himalaya. By the 1830s, Shimla had already developed as a major base for the British. It became the summer capital of British India in 1864, and also the Headquarters of the British army in India. The Kalka- Shimla Railway was built to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the Indian rail system. "The Guinness Book of Rail facts & feats" records Kalka Shimla Railways as the greatest narrow gauge engineering in India. It is indeed true, construction of 103 tunnels (102 Existing) aggregating five miles and over 800 bridge in three years, that too in rough and hostile terrain was not an easy task. The Historic, approximate 115 years old KLK-SML Railway line which was opened for public traffic on 9 th Nov.1903, became UNESCO Declared world Heritage Railway line, when it was conferred Heritage status on 10 th July 2008 & listed under "Mountain Railways of India". The idea of a Railway line to Shimla dates back to the introduction of Railways in India. It is said that in The DELHI GAZETTE, a correspondent in November, 1847 sketched the route of railway to Shimla with the estimates of the traffic returns etc in appropriate style. It is interesting to note that Kalka Shimla line was most surveyed line.

It is believed that Baba Bhalkhu a local saint, who possessed some supernatural engineering skills, helped the British engineers in laying down this track. In dedication to his services, Railway has named a Museum as BABA BHALKHU RAIL MUSEUM at SML. This Museum depicts the way of life of KALKA-SHIMLA Railway section through a collection of extremely rare artifacts accumulated over the decades. The collection has been displayed in the most authentic manner. The line measuring 95.68 KM from Kalka to Shimla was opened for traffic on Nov.9, 1903. This line was further extended from Shimla to Shimla Goods (The old Bullock cart office) on June 27, 1909 making it 96.57 KM. An interesting feature of this line was complete absence of Girder Bridges initially. Multi Arched Galleries, like ancient Roman Aqueduct being the commonest mean of carrying the lines over the ravines between the hills. A few of the bridges are unique, specially Bridge No 226 & 541 remained most spectacular bridges of this section throughout this period and can be seen in many photographs of this section. Similarly a few tunnels are also unique. Initially there were 103 tunnels, but 102 exist, as tunnel number 46 does not exist now. Out of these 102 tunnels, Barog Tunnel (No 33) 3752 feet long (It is the longest Tunnels of Kalka Shimla Railway line) requires special mention. The Delhi Ambala Railway Company was in serious financial crisis due to high maintenance cost of this section. So on representation of the company the Secretary of the state decided to purchase this line and the purchase was affected from 1 st Jan. 1906. Kalka Shimla Railway was managed as an independent unit from the NWR office Lahore till 1926. Later on the management of Kalka-Shimla line was transferred to Delhi Division. Since July 1987, this is being managed from Ambala Cantt. The first two steam locomotives approved on Kalka Shimla Railway were from Sharp Stewart and Company Limited of Glasgow, built in 1900 & 1902 respectively. One steam locomotive (No KC-520) built in 1905 is still surviving and can be seen on this track. The ultimate in Luxury travel reached Kalka Shimla Railway when Rail motor car was introduced on this section. The earliest rail motor cars on Kalka Shimla Section were petrol driven supplied by B.DREWERY CAR CO. LTD/London. The four rail motor cars (i.e No 1, 2, 3 & 4) working on this section were 1927 built repower packed in 2001 with Leyland engines. Diesel Traction was introduced on this line in 1956 with the procurement of 5DZ (Later ZDM-1) class locomotives built by M/s A. JUNG of Germany. The first lot of carriage built for Kalka Shimla Railway in 1903 was small four wheeler measuring 17 feet from Buffer to Buffer. One can however see a few vintage old coaches and wagons still plying on Kalka Shimla line. Rolling stock on this section is nicely maintained. In 1905 Kalka Shimla Railway obtained its first traveling crane for attending accidents. This 10.T break down crane was manually operated built by M/s Cowans Sheldon of U.K. It was a beautiful piece since condemned. No doubt this exotic Railway section is stunningly beautiful. Sometimes it faces vagaries of nature also. Peak winter season and rainy season are the most trying period for a railway man working on this section. The snowfall of moderate intensity is very common on this section, in December and January. Snow cutters are attached on the engine to clear the snow in winter. However the first heavy snow fall this section faced was on Dec.26, 1903. The traffic remained suspended for two days. The heaviest snow fall since this railway line came into existence was during first eleven days of Jan 1945. The Rail traffic remained disrupted up till Jan 14, 1945. Slips and landslides are also quite common on Kalka - Shimla section of Railway. The most serious settlement occurred in 1978 and 2007 respectively. In August, 2007 heavy down pour washed away part of Koti station building. Track was put into service after many days. Kalka Shimla Track has also played an important role in the history of subcontinent. In 1930 Mahatma Gandhi traveled by this track to meet Lord Irwin. Late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma/Ex President Of India always preferred Kalka Shimla Rail Journey while going to Shimla. All the stations are quite neat and clean, but Barog station is eye catching and stunningly beautiful. The restaurant of Barog Railway Station is one of the oldest and still maintained with oldest atmosphere. According to legend the Barog station is named after British Engineer Mr. Barog, who was working on this railway project. Time has changed a lot. With the passage of time, train journey between Kalka Shimla has become more convenient. Luxurious coaches and trains have been introduced in making KLk- SML rail journey more memorable. Putting the Rails on arduous slopes of Shivalik hills that too in hostile conditions, more than 115 years ago; truly Kalka Shimla is the finest example of greatest narrow gauge engineering skills. It is a salute to both men and mountains, as Great Things happen when two meet.

Indian Railways suspends train operations on Kalka-Shimla heritage line due to cracks in railway bridge – All you need to know

“four out of seven trains have been suspended while two trains are running till taradevi and one till kandaghat”, railway officials said..

Train operations on the Kalka-Shimla heritage line came to a halt on Saturday (June 22) due to cracks discovered on a railway bridge the previous night. Out of the seven trains on this route, only two are scheduled to arrive and depart from Tara Devi station today, while one train is expected to return from Kandaghat. 

“Four out of seven trains have been suspended while two trains are running till Taradevi and one till Kandaghat”, railway officials told PTI. However, all services to Shimla remain suspended. 

Tourism stakeholders reported that the suspension of trains has greatly impacted Shimla’s tourism industry , especially during the peak summer season when hill station travel is in high demand. 

“The tourists are welcomed in Shimla and there is nothing to worry about as the distance between Shimla and Taradevi railway station is just 11 km. The station is located adjacent to the main road and we would request the transport department to start buses from Taradevi for the convenience of the commuters”, said Shimla Hotel and Tourism Stakeholders Association President M K Seth.

Concerns mount as Railway authorities delay permanent solutions

Seth expressed disappointment that despite a year passing, the railway authorities still haven’t implemented permanent solutions, resulting in the suspension of train services after just two spells of rain. “We wonder what will happen during the upcoming monsoon season”, he added.

“To add to it, the railway authorities are not ready to talk and inform when the train services would be resumed till Shimla”, Seth said.

Virender Thakur, a local councillor from the Shimla Municipal Corporation, stated that they will formally request the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Northern Railway to restore these services.

“The temporary Railway Bridge was built last year and was resumed within three months. I got to know that the railway track had started sliding from the corner of the bridge. Yesterday evening technical officials visited the site and trains have been suspended till further order,” Thakur said.

“We demand that this railway track be restored. 8-9 trains run daily on this heritage trek. These trains are packed with tourists. We shall request the DRM Northern Railway to restore it. We hope this is restored soon. Until they give us a green signal the trains can’t be run,” Thakur added.

Impact on Shimla’s tourism industry 

Tourists are facing disappointment as they are forced to rearrange their travel plans. “I had a train at 3:40 PM. All the trains have been suspended due to some problem. I came four days ago and arrived here on a toy train. I am not able to understand what has happened. I have come with my family here, now it’s becoming difficult how we shall return. They are saying some problems have occurred on track,” said Mohmmad Sultan, a tourist from Kanpur.

A local expressed dismay after his ticket was canceled. “We had come to visit Shimla. Our ticket got cancelled and we got to know that some bridges had broken and it was disappointing for us. My son wanted to travel by toy train. They are not sure if the train will start tomorrow or not. Now we shall have to plan another route,” Maani said.

Rains batter Shimla-Kalka Railway every year

Last year, heavy rains in July and August severely disrupted train services, resulting in extensive damage to the track at 20 to 25 locations in July. In August, a landslide swept away a 50-meter bridge, leaving a section of the track hanging near Summer Hill. 

However, services resumed in October following repairs to the affected stretches. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Shimla-Kalka Railway, spanning 96 km through challenging hilly terrain with 103 tunnels, now has 102 tunnels after one collapsed four decades ago.
