Creating Our Roadmap to Success

Over time, we have been transforming and acquiring some of the most iconic vacation and travel-related businesses to become the world’s leading membership and leisure travel company. In 2018, we established Wyndham Destinations, Inc. and spun off our hotel business into a separate publicly traded company, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. While they are two separate entities, we have long-term exclusive license agreements to retain our connection with Wyndham Rewards, one of the top loyalty programs in the hospitality industry. Since then, we have also acquired Alliance Reservations Network and the iconic Travel + Leisure brand.

Travel + Leisure’s future includes a booking platform and subscription service

Melanie Lieberman

On Wednesday, Wyndham Destinations officially became Travel + Leisure Co., a membership and leisure travel company, after acquiring Travel + Leisure magazine last month.

Travel + Leisure Co. will maintain its portfolio of nearly 20 brands — including vacation ownership resorts under the Wyndham Destinations umbrella — and has appointed Noah Brodsky (whose resume includes such travel industry behemoths as Sheraton, Four Seasons and, most recently, Wyndham Hotels) to oversee its Travel + Leisure Group as president and chief brand officer.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

If you already feel like you're in a travel-themed nesting doll, here's how it breaks down:

Travel + Leisure Co. , formerly Wyndham Destinations, includes Wyndham Destinations and its 230 vacation club resorts around the world; the vacation exchange company RCI; and the new Travel + Leisure Group, among others.

The Travel + Leisure Group is a collection of branded products and services (such as a new booking platform and a forthcoming subscription travel club) "inspired by online and print travel content" from Travel + Leisure.

Travel + Leisure is a travel and lifestyle brand with a magazine, website, social media platforms and more — plus, full disclosure, my former employer.

Got it? Good.

New travel services

Travel + Leisure Group made its debut with announcements about two new branded products: The first iteration of a booking platform and an early look at a Travel + Leisure subscription travel club expected to launch this summer.

BookTandL.com

leisure.com travel group

Today, the Travel + Leisure Group launched the first iteration of BookTandL.com , an online booking platform where travelers can research, plan and book trips.

Brodsky, who told TPG during a Zoom interview that he grew up reading Travel + Leisure magazine, said: "The first step" for the group is "connecting its really iconic magazine with a more direct way to book" the experiences you'd see in print and online.

At BookTandL.com, you can reserve a hotel, flight, rental car or activity (think: a Central Park bike rental; a Universal Orlando park pass), or you can peruse content pulled directly from the Travel + Leisure website.

It's powered by what Brodsky calls a "secret sauce" of proprietary technology from RCI's acquisition of Alliance Reservations Network (ARN) in 2019, direct and indirect supplier relationships and, of course, T+L content.

Subscription travel club

leisure.com travel group

This summer, the Travel + Leisure Group will launch a subscription travel club for $10 a month, where travelers can get access to exclusive experiences or special perks and amenities. You can have the kind of dream trip you read about in an issue of Travel + Leisure, but with added benefits, Brodsky explained.

So, for example, subscribers might get VIP reservations at an editor-picked seaside restaurant from a feature about Greece . There might be a private tour, or a spa credit or welcome toast at a hotel plucked straight from the magazine's glossy pages. The subscription will also include discounted rates at BookTandL.com.

Brodsky says the forthcoming travel club will be both "exclusive" and "really accessible."

"We're certainly seeing a resurgence in travel subscriptions," he explained, saying travelers will get "a sense of belonging and a sense of access that can't be experienced in quite the same way without [the club]" whether they pay $10 or thousands — like you might for the all-you-book Inspirato Pass .

"Luxury," he added, "doesn't have to be about the price point."

Brodsky thinks younger travelers will see luxury as having a local, authentic experience. "That is one of the things T+L does so well in the stories they tell. [They] give you the sense that you're really there," he said, not talking or dreaming about a place but really experiencing it like a local. And that, he said, is something you can get at any price.

And for those of you who are wondering, Brodsky says allowing the writers and editors at Travel + Leisure to maintain editorial independence was one of "the most important parts of [the] deal."

"We have no say [in] what they write or what goes into the magazine," Brodsky said. Instead, the team will look to the content that's written for inspiration — much like the brand's readers do today.

The media company Meredith Corp. will continue to publish Travel + Leisure magazine under a 30-year licensing agreement.

Bottom line

leisure.com travel group

Both BookTandL.com and the upcoming subscription club are arriving at a moment when Brodsky says "people want to be inspired by travel more than ever before."

"Travel is, by its very nature, a luxury. We are privileged that we all get to travel and go out and see other places in the world, and that we have the resources and ability [to do so]."

"I certainly think this lockdown has reminded us all not to take travel for granted , [and] as we come out of this it's going to be more important than ever to make every trip count."

Every trip, he said, should be a trip of a lifetime .

I Used to Work on a Cruise Ship, and These Are the 13 Things You Should Never Leave Port Without

A former crew member reveals the most important packing essentials.

Kelsey’s writing has appeared in outlets like Condé Nast Traveler, TripSavvy, Edible Magazine, and TimeOut. Some of the most standout experiences in her travels include living in Tokyo, abseiling in Vanuatu, surfing in Costa Rica, and cycling through the Pyrenees mountains.

Travel + Leisure

My first career as a cruise ship entertainer had me sailing all over the world, living and working aboard these large floating resorts for six to eight months at a time. After years of roaming the world’s ports and experiencing every ship and shoreside scenario that you could imagine, I became adept at packing a single suitcase to ensure a comfortable life at sea.

Although living on a ship long-term is different from taking a 10-day cruise, crew and guest cruise packing lists are similar — emphasizing items that make sailing more comfortable and easy. Whether you’re embarking on a world cruise or just escaping to the Caribbean for a quick trip, these essential travel accessories are what my fellow seafarers and I would suggest bringing to make life on the water all the more comfortable. From versatile travel bags to helpful gadgets and genius seasick remedies , here’s what to pack for a cruise like a pro.

Travel Voltage Converter

Most ship staterooms are outfitted with a three-prong 110-volt (North America-grounded) and a 220-volt (Europe) outlet. It’s always a good idea to carry an international adaptor and surge protector to safeguard your devices from electric irregularities. What's more, smaller interior cabins may have only two outlets, which could pose a problem if you and your guest have multiple devices to charge at the same time. Useful for more than just onboard, an internal adaptor is also handy for cruise itineraries that drop you off in multiple countries. Keep this adaptor in your day bag so you can plug it in ashore if your tech needs a charge.

Liquid I.V. Packets

Cruises are vacations, a time to enjoy yourself and indulge. But it’s all too easy to go a tad overboard (ship pun intended) on alcoholic beverages, savory foods, and sunbathing. If you think a hangover is bad, just wait until you have one on a rocky ship at sea. To avoid losing a precious day of your cruise, bring along Liquid I.V. powder, an electrolyte mix that delivers hydration to the bloodstream faster than just water alone. Each bag comes with 16, travel-friendly powder packets and you have your choice between 17 flavors.

Portable First Aid Kit

Visits to the ship’s medical center can be pricey. Avoid this unexpected expense if you can by bringing  your own first aid kit. Start by packing your essential prescription medications. Then,  add bandages and antibiotic ointment for attending to small surface wounds. Bring pain relief medication and cold medicine, just in case. Don’t forget antacids and over-the-counter medicines to ease digestion. Sunscreen and aloe vera gel are must-haves  so you don’t spend your whole cruise hiding from the sun. Bug repellent and after-bite lotion will also ease your sleep if you’ve run into sand fleas at the beach. If you have any allergies, make sure that you have an EpiPen or your chosen allergy medication.

Portable Charger

When I lived on a ship, I would be one of the first ashore and the last back onboard. Exploring new locales is one of the best parts of cruising. If you like to head ashore for the whole day, you’ll want to keep your phone charged so you can navigate your way back to the ship, call for help in case of an emergency, and snap pictures and videos of your destination. Carry a powerful battery bank with you like the Anker Portable Charger so your phone doesn’t die and you’re prepared for long adventures, or fun overnights, in ports of call.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

You’re never far from water on a cruise ship, which means that you’ll want to protect your tech with waterproof gear. Great for island cruise itineraries, this phone bag is watertight and retains touchscreen operations through its polyvinyl shell. It comes with a detachable lanyard should you want to take it into the waves and capture underwater adventures. Even if you’re not going in the water, this pouch will protect your phone from snow and rain, too. Beach-bound cruisers will also find it useful for keeping their phone sand- and salt-free too.

Collapsible Umbrella

Weather on a cruise can be tough to predict, particularly for various ports of call. Even if the forecast is fair, weather can change in an instant, particularly if you’re cruising near shoulder seasons. You’ll be grateful to come prepared with an umbrella so you aren’t forced to buy the marked-up ones in port or onboard. Even if there’s no sign of rain, a good umbrella doubles as a sun protectant for harsh midday sun.

Formal Evening Attire

Almost every cruise has a formal night where guests are encouraged to dress in elegant wear. This event usually occurs on a sea day at the beginning of your itinerary. Formal nights are fun and evoke the old-world, slow-travel glamor of cruising. Even the officers dress up and don their formal ship whites. When everyone onboard participates in the formal night dress code,  it makes the event all the more special and luxurious, so remember to bring a few upscale resort looks onboard. This stunning Tadashi Shoji Off-Shoulder A-Line Crepe and Taffeta Gown will do the trick, but if you’re shopping on a budget, there are plenty of swanky cocktail dress options at Amazon; start your search with the Anrabess Pleated Maxi Dress or PrettyGarden One-Shoulder Slit Maxi Dress — starting at $50.

Sand-Free Beach Towel

Most cruise guests bring the ship’s pool towels shoreside for lounging. But, the terry cloth towels cling to the sand, bringing it back in your bag to be dumped on your stateroom floor. If you want a tidier beach trip, bring along a sand-free beach blanket like this Turkish beach towel. It's made with cotton and folds up slim so it won’t take up too much space in your suitcase. What's more, it dries quickly to prevent your bag and its contents from getting soggy.

Packing Cubes

When I reached out to a crew member friend to discuss packing tips, his first thought was emphatically packing cubes. Organization is key to enjoying your cruise, particularly on the day that you embark as it’s the most hectic day for all staff onboard. By the time that you’re able to check into your room, it’s almost time to sail away, and you’ll probably want to be on deck with a daiquiri and sweet treat in hand, not organizing your wardrobe — which is why I recommend traveling with packing cubes. They're not only great for condensing your suitcase contents but also keeping them organized and easy-to-spot, so you can spend less time searching for the things you need and make unpacking and getting ready a breeze.

Collapsible Duffel Bag

One of the perks of cruise ship travel is that, unlike airlines,  most cruise lines don’t have strict luggage policies. For travelers who like to shop or collect souvenirs, this is a huge perk. On itineraries with excellent shopping, cruising can be a great way to source neat gifts. Onboard shopping is also a fun way to pick up items to remember your trip. If you’re worried that you won’t have room in your case for your purchases, bring a collapsible duffel bag like this handy 40-liter version from REI for your treasures. Amazon reviewers also love the Gonex Foldable Travel Duffle Bag and the Vomgomfom Travel Duffle Bag for the same reason.

Reusable Collapsible Bag

If you’re cruising around islands, you can make this collapsible tote bag your designated beach bag. Its nylon fabric makes it easy to brush off sand and it dries quickly should you need to wash it (or accidentally get it wet while you're at the beach). If you’re cruising around Europe, you’ll quickly learn that single-use plastic bags are often banned. Many markets, shops, and stores expect everyone to come with their own bag to take away their products. This reusable bag folds to a pocket-size when you’re not using it, so you can keep it in your purse or backpack until you need it.

If you’re a light sleeper, the noises of a ship may come as a shock. Whether it’s the sounds of the anchor dropping at 5 a.m. or your raucous neighbors enjoying late-night revelry, earplugs will help you get restful sleep at sea — no matter the time of day. Make sure you pick up this on-sale pack of 60 at Amazon; they're made with soft foam for a comfortable and adjustable fit and deliver impressive noise-canceling capabilities.

Non-Drowsy Seasick Patches

If your itinerary is taking you through rough waters, like the Drake Passage or the Tasmanian Sea, be prepared with remedies to fight motion sickness. More than 11,500 reviewers swear by these seasick patches that use a holistic herbal blend to fight nausea. The onboard medical center offers Dramamine to seasick guests, which will make you sleepy and groggy. If you want to stay alert while fighting the nausea, these non-drowsy patches are the way to go. A few crew tips for fighting sea stomach: stay on the upper levels of the ship, munch on green apples, and keep your eyes on the horizon.

This Chic Hotel Group Is Expanding in Europe — and Rethinking What Luxury Means to Travelers

The Standard CEO Amber Asher tells T+L what's next for the hotel brand, and what luxury really means in 2024.

The Standard Hotels, long established in the U.S., has recently launched internationally with the debut of The Standard, London , in 2019 and The Standard, Ibiza , in 2022, among others, like a global flagship in Asia . Now, it's expanding its footprint in Europe with upcoming properties in Brussels, Lisbon, and Dublin.

"The markets we're going into haven't been tapped as much by luxury lifestyle brands," Amber Asher, the CEO of Standard International, the parent company behind The Standard Hotels, told Travel + Leisure . "I think what we do is unique — going in with the type of culinary offerings, the nightlife, and the incredible designers and artists we're working with."

The Standard, Brussels, is expected to welcome guests in the first half of 2025 in the former World Trade Center. The hotel will sit next to a greenhouse with a botanical garden inside and will have a "harmonious blend between nature and modernity," according to a press release provided to T+L. The property will have 180 guest rooms and 20 residences that offer an "extended-stay concept," which Asher said is "the first time The Standard has really done that."

Later in the year, The Standard, Lisbon, is set to open in a now-defunct naval hospital in the historic district of Alfama, the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon. "This project is so unique because we're working with a kind of the confines of this former military hospital, but obviously, redeveloping it in a very respectful but beautiful way," Asher said. "I think Lisbon has just been a place where people have really flocked to in the last few years: it's a great destination, a lot of cool things are happening, and it's still somewhat affordable."

The hotel, which overlooks the water, will have 172 guest rooms and 32 residences, a pool deck and terrace with panoramic views of the city, a cafe with views of Campo de Santa Clara, a live-fire cooking restaurant, and a bar in a restored pharmacy. Repurposing existing buildings is a theme for The Standard; Asher told T+L that the brand "loves to take buildings that have their own unique history and origin."

When it comes to picking destinations for new Standard Hotels, it's largely about what guests want. "Will our guests want to go there, and will they be excited?" Asher said. "Sometimes we create destinations, like we did with The Standard, Hua Hin , in Thailand, which is not a place with a lot of lifestyle hotels."

Beyond the Europe expansion — Lisbon, Brussels, Dublin — over the next three years, Asher said there are projects in the pipeline in Latin America. "I think it's a real opportunity to go into places where you can still develop gorgeous, amazing hotels that are really culturally rich and really connect with the place and the people," she told T+L.

As The Standard continues to grow in the luxury space, it's expanding on what the brand offers travelers. "There's a million different definitions these days for luxury," Asher said. "Where it used to be about thread count, turndown service, and all of those elements, it's now about the experience, the connection, and going somewhere that is yet to be discovered. As we've grown, we've elevated our design game, from where we started with The Standard, Hollywood; heightened our culinary offerings; and set guests up to explore the next big thing. We're creating these memorable experiences, which I think is what luxury these days is all about."

Calista Flockhart Is Ready for an Ally McBeal Reboot

The cast reunited at the Emmys this year, and now they have an active group chat. Is a reboot next?

calista flockhart

"I would love to do some sort of reboot on some of Ally McBeal, " Flockhart told Vanity Fair in a new interview "I had such a wonderful time at the Emmys, reuniting with my buddies, and dancing goofy with them. It just was so much fun. It was a highlight of my year. It was so much fun, and now we group text."

This past January, Flockhart was joined by her co-stars Greg Germann, Gil Bellows, and Peter MacNicol at the 2024 Emmys to present an award, and the four danced on stage together:

"I hadn’t seen them in a really long time, and it was like not one moment passed," Flockhart said. "We were right back where we started, making jokes, laughing, nobody else could understand our sense of humor. It was really fun. It was a joy." The original Ally McBeal aired for five seasons from 1997 to 2002, and earned Flockhart three Emmy nominations.

An Ally McBeal revival, or reboot, has been rumored for a few years now. In 2021, Deadline reported "ideas about a possible revival of the legal comedy-drama series, which became a pop culture phenomenon, are being bounced around , " and that Flockhart had been approached about reprising her titular role. And in 2022, the publication reported an Ally McBeal sequel was in the works at ABC .

This isn't the first time Flockhart has said she'd be open to returning to the world of Ally McBeal . "I would be game," she said earlier this year. "I'm always game."

Luxury travelers are wary of professionally edited photos that gloss over a hotel’s imperfections, and overbearing public relations strategies touting something less than luxurious as the real deal. At least, they should be.

That was the message behind a well-read blog post four years ago written by Jaclyn Sienna India, the founder of ultra-luxury travel and lifestyle concierge company Sienna Charles . Under the headline “ Why Luxury Hotels are Dead ,” India explained how luxury travel brands bent over backward for social media influencers and devalued personalized, tailored services — the standard by which ultra-wealthy travelers measure excellence. A property’s image came to matter more than the experience it could deliver.

Since then, the pandemic has receded. Partnering with influencers has become standard marketing procedure among even non-luxury brands. Many of the world’s ultra-wealthy travelers decided they would rather spend their time abroad in a private villa or yacht than a pricey hotel room. So, are luxury hotels still dead? Are there any signs of life?

In short, yes and no.

“High-end hospitality services are degrading because there are so many people with money that they no longer have to do their best to compete for a narrow audience,” India explained via email. “Nowadays, luxury travel is accessible not only to the ultra-rich but also to people with up to $30 million net worth, who are considered rich but not ultra-rich. And all of them, multi-millionaires and billionaires, are trying to get into the same restaurants, villas, or hotels seeking the exclusive experience.”

On one hand, this apparent contradiction makes sense: more people can afford travel experiences today compared to years past, so maintaining the standard established for a few ultra-rich clients should only get harder as more people try to access the same experiences. On the other hand, if luxury travel spending is at an all-time high and only continuing to grow, why hasn’t that improved the experience for the average luxury traveler?

“Everything is at 100% occupancy since the pandemic, which is why hospitality providers don’t have to try too hard,” India said. “The travel industry has also become highly transactional. If you have a bad experience at a hotel, you won't return, but you've wasted a ton of time and money when you could have had a better experience.”

The implications for the luxury travel scene are many. Hospitality brands that formerly competed with one another are now competing against what the ultra-rich — the over-$30 million net worth crowd — can easily afford to provide themselves.

India offered some examples:

Luxury Travelers Aren’t Dining Out

View from the aft deck of a luxury motor yacht off the shores of Sidney on Vancouver Island during a ... [+] beautiful summer evening

Rather than dining out, luxury travelers simply employ private chefs in their destination homes. It’s also become quite common for a chef to travel with the family when going from Point A to Point B. The alternative, India said, is bleak: “I was in London earlier this year and complained to the manager of one of Mayfair’s best restaurants about how poor the service was in the city. And he shared that staff are really hard to find, to the extent that if people mess up or don’t show up to work, they won’t be fired because it’s just too complicated to replace them. The same happens in Paris. You can wait half an hour to be served a drink at one of the Top 7 restaurants in the city.”

Hotels Can’t Meet The Demand Among Luxury Travelers

The 0.1 Percent are seen enjoying more vacations on a private yacht over staying in a luxury hotel.

Hotels are facing similar pressures for which the supply of staff has yet to meet the demand among travelers. “Hotels are running at 99% occupancy and are dealing with short-staffed, ever-changing and untrained teams, not focusing on client experience,” India said. “General managers are in the office creating spreadsheets to provide to their private equity owners instead of greeting guests and training the team about service touchpoints.” She suggests this is turning off experienced travelers who can afford to purchase their own villas and yachts, pick their staff, and train them to meet their own standards and expectations.

So, if quality is hard to find in the hospitality sector, where can someone who can afford good service find it? India believes this is where the membership-based model of private concierge services (like her own) comes in. “It's a commitment to make service better and better each time,” she said.

Luxury hotels might not be dead, but they have fundamentally changed by definition in the last 10 years — at least for the ultra-wealthy set, if not the nouveau riche . How the hospitality sector responds, and if it can keep up with the growing demand for exclusive services and experiences, will be among the industry trends to watch in the next decade.
