Which cellar doors do we visit on the Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour?

We mix and match the 3 we pick from this list, so every tour is slightly different. We aim for a mix of boutique and mid-sized cellar doors and try to support locally owned and operated venues rather than the large corporates that you see in bottleshops. It’s time to shake it up and taste something different!

Some of the cellar doors that we usually visit include the following:

Ernest Hill wines Ridgeview wines Hunter Wine Lab Briar Ridge wines Blueberry Hill wines Travertine wines The Garden Cellars Tintilla Estate

What do guests say about our Hunter Valley Wine Tour s?

Firstly and foremost I want to thank you for your help in organising our wine tour. Your communication has been impeccable and I could not thank you enough for all your information about the wineries, options for us to choose, your recommendations and just the ease of booking everything without an ounce of stress on my part. Our tour went without a hitch. All the girls loved it and it was everything we were all hoping for. I will absolutely be recommending your business to everyone that will listen! Our driver Jeff was fantastic so a massive thank you to him as well. I will definitely be booking again in the future, thank you again!

Christie B :

Just wanted to pass on that we had a fabulous time on our tour over the weekend!

Grant was a blast! He was great value, made everyone feel comfortable, and had a wealth of knowledge. The Hunter Valley wineries we visited were lovely (Ernest Hill was our favourite) and a perfect spot for lunch.

Really appreciate the extra service with the Newcastle drop-off and pick-up. We would absolutely come back again and will highly recommend to friends and family

I’m so happy I booked a wine tour with Tastes of the Hunter for my 30th birthday! Thanks to Suzanne, the whole booking process went smoothly, and it was so easy. Things couldn’t have been better on the day. Our driver, Kevin, was very patient and made sure everyone was always fine.

Everyone on the tour agreed that it was an amazing day. We can’t wait to come back and do another tour with Tastes of the Hunter

Frequently Asked Questions about our Hunter Valley Wine Tours

Shared bus tours such as our Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour ($130pp for Hunter Valley pickup and $145pp for Newcastle pickup) are the most economical option. The Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour includes: – Cellar door and distillery tasting fees. – Pickup and drop-off to your Hunter Valley accommodation (and all transfers between venues). – The tour organisation (you don’t need to book any venues). Private hunter valley wine tours start at $1145 for a 13-seat bus, which is charged per bus rather than per person. So the more people you have, the cheaper a private tour can be.

Yes! Our Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour price includes 3 cellar door tasting fees (at the cellars we have organised for the tour) and 1 spirits tasting.

No! We pride ourselves on our affordable Hunter Valley wine tours being as economical as possible, and there are no sneaky booking fees or transaction fees applied at the checkout. These are already included in the $130pp price for pickup from your Hunter Valley accommodation and the $145pp price for Newcastle pickup.

Lunch is at your own expense on the day. We always visit casual lunch venues where the majority of meals are available for $30-$40 per person. The lunch venues are usually 4 Pines at the Farm Brewhouse, Ironbark Hill Brewhouse, The Valley Brewhouse, Nineteen Bar and Bistro, Huntlee Tavern, or Harrigan’s Irish pub. All offer a range of pub favourites, including gourmet pizzas, gourmet burgers, steaks, chicken schnitzel, salads, etc.

Vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan options are usually available (however, they cannot be guaranteed). Please let us know when you book if you have any special dietary requirements.

The actual tour component is between 10am and 4.30pm (it can run as late as 5pm if we are delayed at any venues). Pickups occur before 10am, drop-offs occur after 4.30pm/5pm and are based on distance from Pokolbin (i.e., we start with outer areas and work our way towards Pokolbin/Rothbury/Lovedale/Cessnock with these pickups usually occurring between 9.15am and 9.45am). We’ll send you an email by the Wed/Thurs morn before the tour with your exact pickup time, venues and driver details.

Our drivers aim to get as close as possible to your Hunter Valley cottage, as many of the properties in Pokolbin, Rothbury, and Lovedale have long driveways. This is usually possible 99% of the time. However, our drivers always put the safety of other passengers first. Therefore, if it isn’t safe for the bus to reach the exact location of your cottage (e.g., steep/rough terrain, slippery gravel road), we’ll give you a call and negotiate a safe place to pick you up as close as possible to your accommodation. Please note: Pickups from Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort and Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley are usually from the bus zone outside the main reception area, as the roads to the individual villas are quite narrow and unsuitable for minibuses.

Our Hunter Valley tours from Newcastle pickup directly from residential addresses in Newcastle or from outside of your Newcastle hotel (we may require you to walk around the corner if directly outside of your hotel is a “no stopping” zone). You don’t need to arrange additional transport to meet the bus at a designated meeting point. We come to you!

To keep things simple and affordable, we charge one price for pickups from the Hunter Valley ($130pp) from the suburbs we can pick up from (see above). If you request a pickup from an outer Hunter Valley suburb (e.g., Maitland, Rutherford, Singleton, Elderslie, Dalwood, Quorrobolong, Broke, etc.), your pickup time will be earlier (in the range of 8.30am – 9am). Suppose you have a small number of guests (e.g., 2-4 people). In that case, it is advised that you contact us to check if we can fit you into the existing pickup schedule for a particular date. The pickups we are able to do can depend on the other guests already booked in.

The Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour has a set itinerary, so you don’t need to book any venues. Just hop on board, ready for a fun day and a snapshot of the wines, beers, and spirits the Hunter is famous for! If you need a tour where you can choose your own venues (and you have 8 or more guests), then you can check out our private tours of the Hunter Valley .

Craft beer paddles/schooners of craft beer etc., are available for purchase at 4 Pines at the Farm Brewhouse (around $20 for a paddle of 4 beers) and Ironbark Hill brewhouse (around $18 for a paddle of 4 beers/ciders), The Valley Brewhouse, Huntlee Tavern and Harrigan’s Irish pub. These are optional and come with a guide sheet for a self-guided tasting.  Please note:  The prices above are a guide, and venues can change their prices without notice.

The Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Adventure Tour runs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (Saturday only for Newcastle pickups). If you have a group of 8 people or more and would like a private tour (with a similar itinerary or one you can fully customise!) on a weekday (Mon – Thurs), check out our options for private wine tours of the Hunter Valley ).

A brand new, gourmet-inspired, multi-day tour has landed in the Hunter Valley, unlike anything the region has seen before.

Live Like a Local gives guests the opportunity to do exactly as the name suggests – immerse themselves in all that the Hunter Valley has to offer, and live like a local for five incredible days.

This multi-day tour is full of unbookable experiences that a day trip to the region simply can’t cover, and most of which you can’t access without host Jo Bowskill’s established connections.

live like a local tour hunter valley

Hunter Valley locals know that there’s so much more to showcase in the region than just wine, so Jo (a chef and vigneron) has curated a selection of the area’s best hidden gems.

However, the wine is world class and flowing, so don’t fret – you’ll get to taste plenty of it on the tour.

I was lucky enough to join Live Like a Local’s first tour for a day – here’s a taste of what you can expect.

Breakfast at Maitland Street Collective

The day kicked off with a private alfresco breakfast at Maitland Street Collective, a laidback cafe in the heart of Branxton. Located in what was once The Commercial Hotel, Maitland Street Collective not only serves up breakfast, lunch, sweet treats, and coffee, but it often holds events like markets and yoga classes, and the basement has been transformed into an art gallery and community hub.

Make sure you have a peek at the latest exhibition in the gallery. Chances are you’ll discover a local artist you wouldn’t have otherwise!

Charcuterie tasting at Hungerford Meat Co.

Right next door to Maitland Street Collective sits Hungerford Meat Co. , a butchery renowned for its house-made charcuterie and ‘whole carcass’ approach.

The shop itself doesn’t look like any old butchery – checkered floor tiles lend the space an old-school feel, but dark timber panelling and marble benchtops give Hungerford Meat Co. its modern edge.

We headed in for an exclusive tasting. Despite having only just finished breakfast, the whole group got right into sampling butcher Michael’s charcuterie creations like wagyu bresaola, duck terrine, and lonza – except for me, the sole vegetarian on the tour. I couldn’t help but think I was missing out as the group went quiet, rolling their eyes and nodding their heads as they savoured the morsels of flavoursome, meaty goodness.

Wine Tasting at Vamp by Lisa McGuigan

A change of plans replaced hand disgorging of Methode Traditionelle at Pierre’s Wines (which the group enjoyed another day) with a private visit to Lisa McGuigan’s medieval-meets-modern cellar door in Pokolbin.

Vamp is unlike any other cellar door in the Hunter Valley, which is saying a lot, considering there’s more than 100 to choose from. We got chatting with Vamp’s knowledgeable staff as we tasted Lisa’s range of wines, admired the funky, monochrome fitout, and even grabbed a few bottles to take home.

Mozzarella making with Classes in the Kitchen

One of the best parts of Live Like a Local is that it’s not all tasting and observing – there’s so many hands-on activities to get stuck into, too.

As a cheese-lover, getting to make my own ball of mozzarella (under the guidance of Jenny, the owner of Classes in the Kitchen) was a highlight of the day. Jenny also put on a delicious lunch spread, complete with her own preserves, freshly-made mozzarella, and homemade panna cotta.

Tasting wine from the barrel at Hunter Wine Lab

My last stop of the day was Hunter Wine Lab, just down the road from Classes in the Kitchen, where winemaker Nathan led us through an entertaining tasting of Hunter Wine Lab drops, including a selection straight from the barrel.

The cellar door itself is a relaxed space with views over Nathan’s vineyards – a lovely spot to unwind for the afternoon.

This was just one day of Live Like a Local’s four-night, five-day tour. The remaining days involved a helicopter ride and three course lunch atop Sentry Rock at Kawal Rock Distillery , a wine blending workshop, an Italian pasta-making class, a degustation dinner, and stacks more.

live like a local tour hunter valley

Priced at $2,500 (inclusive of transport, four nights’ accommodation, all meals, wine with lunch and dinner, all tasting, workshop, entry, and class fees, and barista coffee), Live Like a Local is a cost-effective, yet premium way to experience the very best of the Hunter Valley and make some like minded foodie friends along the way.

Live Like a Local’s next tour kicks off in February – time for a getaway, anyone?

*Note: The writer was gifted a spot on Live Like a Local’s four night tour for one day.

Generous tasting times will allow you to savour the full range of Hunter Valley offerings. In between wine tastings, you’ll also sit down for a platter-style lunch.

Soaring to an improbable 30m high and 1km wide in some places, these colossal sand hills are the largest mobile dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. A guided 4WD excursion is the best way to experience the beaches and dunes. After the 4WD tour, you’ll be coached to lunch to savour fresh local produce.

After breakfast on board, the train will pull into Maitland Station, from where you’ll travel by coach to Queens Wharf on the waterfront in ‘Newy’. There’s enough here to keep you busy all day: an observation tower, marina, ferry dock, cafes, restaurants, pub, brewery… But an easy-going two-hour Newcastle Afoot walking tour will give you a broader sense of the city, finishing with lunch with a view.

Maitland A great base to explore the Hunter Valley.

Maitland is one of the main gateways and bases for explorations into the popular and historic Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. Residing within earshot of Newcastle and Port Stephens , it is easy to get to by car and can also be done from Sydney in about two hours.

Maitland historic building

Although one of the largest towns in this beautiful region, Maitland is quite small as far as Aussie cities are concerned, such that it can easily be done on foot. Most apparent is the heritage here, with many colonial-style buildings and cute wooden shop house fronts remaining well preserved.

Such was its prominence in history that Maitland was, at one time, considered for capital city status during Australia’s penal colony days. High Street is where it’s at and you would struggle to find a more historic-looking street in all of Australia. There are fine mansions, galleries and craft shops galore along here.

Maitland Gaol is one of the top landmarks, an imposing sandstone structure towards the north of town that is popular among visitors. The Walka Water Works and profusion of wooden bridges are also highlights and there is some excellent shopping, too, although it only really buzzes over the weekend.

Apart from the town itself, the vineyards of the Hunter Valley are the main draw. They are all around the town and can easily be done by car. You can also check out the nearby Buttai Barn for its bush dancing, a short drive out of town, or continue south and explore the beautiful Watagans National Park.

Maitland bridge

Maitland has a train station with direct services from Sydney , while the annual Hunter Valley Steamfest is a big deal for train-spotters and suchlike. You can daytrip from Newcastle or Port Stephens , but there are a good deal of hotels in the area and it is much better to spend time here.

Self-Guided Wine Tour of Hunters Valley

  • March 11, 2023

Self-Guided Wine Tour of Hunters Valley

Australian wines were first produced in the Hunter Valley. It is renowned across the world as a gourmet vacation and is known for its beautiful varietals of Semillon and shiraz. Over 150 cellar doors and an increasing number of cutting-edge eateries provide options for indulgence throughout the entire region. Due to its long history of farming, you can have an amazing paddock to plate and biodynamic experiences, which will make your gourmet delights even more satisfying. Take in the natural splendor of the area around your sampling, relax in one of the many-day spas, or sing along to music between the vines. It should come as no surprise that the Hunter knows a thing or two about making delectable drops as Australia’s longest-growing wine region. There are 150 cellar doors to pick from; hop between them and enjoy their renowned Shiraz and Semillon selections.

The Hunter Valley’s location inland and proximity to mountains cause its weather to generally differ from that of New South Wales’ coastal regions. Four separate seasons result from this, and while summertime temperatures may be higher than along the coast, they tend to drop at night and become drier. The warmer summer months generally last from December to February. During this period, daytime highs can reach the 30s (°C), yet nighttime lows remain pleasant. Although the harvest and general activity make summers enjoyable, keep in mind that it is also the wettest season in Hunter Valley.

What is the Overview of Hunters Valley?

Australia’s Hunter Valley is a wine-producing region. It was one of the first wine-producing districts in Australia, and it is situated in the state of New South Wales. Along with Hunter Valley Sémillon, the area also makes wine from Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Verdelho. The entire basin of the Hunter River and its tributaries is covered by the Hunter Valley zone Australian Geographical Indication (GI) under Australia’s wine appellation system. With the exception of the urban center of Newcastle and the neighboring coastal regions, several national parks, and any territory that was in the Mudgee Shire, the Hunter region is virtually as vast within that and contains the majority of the wine-producing districts (at the western heights of the catchment).

On a Hunter Valley Tour, the region is more than just a place to go “wine hunting.” Well, the majority of it is focused on wine and vineyard tastings. However, there are more factors that make this NSW location worthwhile traveling to. Every traveler will find something here in the valley. You only need to determine why you want to bring your bags on a day excursion to this location. Here are a few reasons why you should travel to the area in case you are still unsure. The region has some of the oldest wineries in Australia, the world’s best Semillon wines are produced here, and it is one of the places near Sydney for hot air balloon rides. There are numerous restaurants with amazing foods and you will get to learn much about Aboriginal history.

What is the Best Time to Visit Hunters Valley?

The Hunter Valley region celebrates autumn from March to May. With great temperatures and little rain, it is the ideal time of year to explore the Valley. The countryside is painted in tones of orange, yellow, green, and brown because it is post-harvest. Consequently, it is a photographer’s dream.

What is the History of Hunters Valley?

The location was accidentally discovered in 1797 by Lieutenant John Shortland while looking for fugitive convicts. He was the first European to do so. The Hunter Valley was initially developed as a coal and timber supply for Sydney and the areas around it. The first overland route to the Hunter was discovered by John Howe in 1820, and in 1823 a road was built mostly along his route from Windsor to Singleton. The pioneer of the path is honored in Howe’s Valley, on the northernmost portion of present-day Putty Road. The Hunter Region became accessible to free settlers through overland travel, and agricultural and pastoral pursuits quickly overtook timber and mining in economic importance. It was at this time, in the early 1920s, that wine grape were first brought to the valley. George Wyndham, William Kelman, and James King were among the early pioneers in the lengthy history of winemaking in the Hunter Valley. On the northern banks of the river and in what is now the Dalwood/Gresford district between Singleton and Maitland, about 20 acres of grapes had already been planted by 1823.

The Pokolbin region established a reputation for producing high-quality wine by 1930. The Hunter Valley’s standing in Sydney and Melbourne was improved by a number of skilled winemakers. The prominent families of the Hunter Valley, some of whom have lived there for six generations, have also significantly influenced the region’s present state. Due to the economy and war, vineyard activity declined in the Hunter Valley from the late 1930s to the 1960s. These years of adversity produced some of the best Hunter Valley wines that can be found today.

The Hunter Valley has produced many superb, internationally renowned wines since its founding, making it one of Australia’s most well-known wine areas today. More than 120 wineries produce a variety of superb wines that are true to their place of origin.

What are the Subregions of Hunters Valley?

The Hunter Valley region consists of the subregions of Upper Hunter Valley, Broke Fordwich, and Pokolbin. It is located northwest of Newcastle, New South Wales, and enjoys a warm, humid environment.

What are the Best Wine Grapes Grown In Hunters Valley?

Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Verdelho are just a few of the grape varietals and wine flavors produced throughout the Valley, but Semillon is often regarded as the most recognizable.

What are the Historical Sites in Hunters Valley?

  • Maitland Gaol

East Maitland, New South Wales is home to the Maitland Gaol, often referred to as Maitland Correctional Center, a former Australian prison that has been recognized as a national historic site. Prisoners initially entered the jail in 1848 after building on it began in 1844.

  • East Maitland Railway Station

On the Main Northern line in New South Wales, Australia, East Maitland is served by the heritage-listed East Maitland railway station. It is the fourth location of the East Maitland station. On April 2, 1999, it was included in the New South Wales State Heritage Register.

  • Poppet Head Park

Poppet Head Park is a Regional Park in the Cessnock local government area and is situated 5 kilometers south of the town of Cessnock. The iconic Poppet Head from Kitchener’s Aberdare Central Colliery is on display at this location. A legacy of the area’s mining past, the dam next to the park and Poppet Head is now a haven for a variety of animals, including mallards, black swans, native wood ducks, and red bills. This park is a fantastic picnic spot full of history and entertainment for people of all ages.

What are the Best Wineries in Hunters Valley?

  • Scarborough Wine Co.

The Hunter Valley is marketed as a family-friendly vacation spot by Scarborough Wine Co. Cellar Door, which does an excellent job of refuting that claim. Parents enjoy toasting their good fortune that their kids are happily playing gigantic Jenga, chess, and kicking a ball around in the sun-drenched tasting area at Scarborough Wine Co.

Although the seven-hectare property owned by Daniel and Jane Maroulis dates back to 1826, Boydell’s is a relatively recent boutique brand in the Hunter. Shiraz, pinot noir, merlot, Verdelho, and Chardonnay occupy hectares of the modest vineyard in East Gresford, close to Maitland. At the cellar door located in an ancient slab hut in Morpeth, or at Boydell’s rustic restaurant next door, where the complete complement of wines can be added to your order, find out which wines best fit your palate.

  • Briar Ridge

Briar Ridge

Briar Ridge Photo

If Steven Pike, cellar door manager, is available to guide you through a wine tasting at this illustrious Hunter Valley estate, consider yourself lucky. Steven’s playlist (and musical knowledge) are both motivated by his palpable passion and enthusiasm for displaying Briar Ridge wines. Additionally, the site is really alluring. As you gaze out over the patchwork-like panorama of rolling hills, you will feel your shoulders relax.

Where Should I Eat in Hunters Valley?

  • Fawk Foods Kitchen & Bakery

Frank Fawkner, the executive chef at EXP Restaurant, created the fantastic Fawk Foods Kitchen & Bakery, which is now well-established in its new location in Pokolbin Village Estate. Breakfast is the finest time to go to the bakery; order the delicious sourdough topped with free-range eggs and thick-cut bacon with BBQ sauce. Try the oven-baked pancakes with caramelized apple, Chantilly cream, macadamia crumb, and maple syrup with a piccolo on the side if you’re feeling very decadent.

  • Usher Tinkler Wines

Travelers who are thirsty and hungry should plan to stop by Usher Tinkler Wines, one of the best Hunter Valley wineries, to savor a platter of salumi with outstanding local varietals from this next-gen winemaker’s cellar.

  • Muse Restaurant

Make reservations in advance at Muse Restaurant, a two-hatted establishment and one of the Hunter Valley’s top attractions, if you really want to get the most out of your trip to wine country . Executive chef, Troy Rhoades-charm Brown’s is contagious in the opulent dining area, where savvily attired wait for personnel dance around the tables.

Where Should I Stay in Hunters Valley?

The Hunter Valley is a rather large area with a variety of tiny villages and suburbs tucked inside, despite the fact that some people might not be aware of this. Your interest in activities and attractions will determine which region is best for your trip.

  • Cypress Lakes Resort

The Cypress Lakes Resort is a piece of heaven on earth and is situated in the center of Pokolbin. You will struggle to leave the resort given its features, which include a vast golf course, a five-star restaurant, a buzzing bar, and a calm pool. You may even walk to a few of the greatest wineries in town from this location to take in the gorgeous surroundings.

  • Convent Hunter Valley

The Convent Hunter Valley is ideal for a weekend spent in the country because it boasts both opulent old-school architecture and lovely gardens. The old structure, which originally housed a community of nuns, is now furnished with antiques and has a peaceful ambiance. Before you leave to return to the busy city on a Sunday morning, take advantage of the high tea that is offered.

How Can I Save Money in Hunters Valley?

You can discover some fantastic prices on AirBnB for modern country cottages with kitchens, a pantry for you to use equipped with everyday essentials, a barbecue, and more if you have a small group (consider 4–12 people). Your finances will benefit from this.

With award-winning wines, renowned restaurants, luxury accommodations, and a full calendar of festivals and events, Hunter Valley is the ideal destination for a short getaway. You’ll fall in love with Australia’s oldest wine region, which is only two hours’ drive north of Sydney and is the source of some of the world’s best wines, including the renowned Hunter Valley Semillon. You won’t even scrape the surface during your wine weekend because this region of Australia has more cellar doors than any other. The historical sites and landscape will make you fall in love with the place.

The vibe: We picture expansive, flowing vineyards and wine cellar doors when we think of the Hunter Valley. And as this area is possibly the largest and oldest wine-growing region in Australia, there is nothing wrong with having such imagery. Hunter Valley comprises wine-producing areas such as Pokolbin, Broke Fordwich, the locality of Hunter, and the Upper Hunter Valley sub-regions.
