A visit to Stresa, the renowned gem of Lake Maggiore, is highly recommended for its captivating charm.

After enjoying breakfast, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby to embark on a scenic journey to Lake Como. Renowned for its Y-shaped configuration and framed by majestic limestone and granite mountains, the lake's beauty is unparalleled. Experience this splendor up close with a boat cruise to Villa Balbianello, exploring its exquisite gardens and savoring a traditional lakeside lunch.

Returning to your Lake Maggiore hotel, the afternoon is yours to relax. The day concludes with a transfer to a local restaurant for dinner, after which you'll return to your hotel for the night.

Post-breakfast, join your guide for an exploration of Lake Maggiore and the enchanting Borromean Islands. A leisurely boat ride introduces you to this small archipelago, a haven of beauty and history owned by the Borromeo family for centuries. It's a place that has charmed nobility and artists alike, including Ernest Hemingway, who immortalized it in "A Farewell to Arms."

Visit the illustrious Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella, followed by time to wander at your leisure. The journey proceeds to Isola dei Pescatori for a quintessential lunch experience.

What should I bring and know?

• While in Italy you should always carry an ID card with you. When taking a boat tour in particular, at least one person in the group must carry his/her passport or ID or a copy or a picture. If failing this requirement, boarding might be denied.
• Bring a Water Bottle , alternatively you can purchase one near the meeting point ​
• Private boats do now allow bringing your own food and drinks on board , except for a bottle of water.
• Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes 
• Sun hat and sun screen are strongly recommended in summer months

What is your cancellation policy?

• SHARED TOURS: full payment within 15 days before tour date. Full refund until 72 hours before departure time.
• PRIVATE TOURS: 10% non-refundable service fee at confirmation. 90% payment 15 days before tour. Full refund (excluding service fee) until 15 days prior to tour/itinerary start. No refund thereafter.
• No refunds if you do not turn up for the tour (no-show) (our tours start promptly, the guide shall not be able to linger)
• ​If you need to reschedule your booked tour we will do our best to accommodate your request . Please contact us directly by  email . LAKE COMO, ITALY the best things to do

Lake Como , locally known as Lago di Como or Lario , is the third largest Italian lake (after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore). Located at the foot of the  Alps , Lake Como offers some of the most romantic and picturesque scenery in Italy.

Its characteristic inverted-Y shape comes from the melting of glaciers combined with the erosive action of the Adda river. This led to the formation of the  two southern branches that culminate in the cities of Como and Lecco , in the middle of which lies the famous Bellagio .

The distances between towns are such that you can visit at least 3 or 4 villages by local transportation, and you can lose yourself among enchanting villas and gardens , relax with a private boat tour or on your favorite beach , and even rejuvenate with a healthy nature walk .

Visit the pearls of lake como many destinations to discover.

The perimeter of Lake Como is dotted with charming villages and towns where there is no shortage of opportunities to shop, take nature walks , visit beautiful villas and botanical gardens , or participate in unforgettable experiences .

The most popular – and therefore busiest – destinations are definitely Bellagio , Varenna , and Como , but  don’t limit yourself to visiting only the best-known locations!

Here is a brief overview of my favorite towns in Lake Como : I recommend that you spend some time reading the guides I have put together so that you can find the destinations that best suit your interests.

Como , the main city of Lake Como in Italy, enchants with its perfect mix of culture, architecture and natural beauty . The city center is compact and flat , and major attractions and the lakefront are within walking distance from the train stations .

Como's medieval walls enclose charming alleys and squares that are home to traditional restaurants and stores , markets selling local produce, and impressive houses of worship such as Como Cathedral .

In the lakefront area, where the pier is located, you can visit the temple to Alessandro Volta  and the large park surrounding the neoclassical Villa Olmo . On the opposite bank, you can take the funicular railway to Brunate .

If you love nature trails, you'll find several easy ones within Spina Verde Park . From Como you can easily reach the other towns on Lake Como by bus and ferry .

Bellagio , a vibrant gem an hour or two away from Como, dazzles with its lively town center , bustling with typical stores and colorful, step-laden alleys in true Italian style.

Explore the Park of Villa Serbelloni and the Gardens of Villa Melzi , and then stroll through the charming hamlets of Pescallo and San Giovanni , each offering a glimpse into Bellagio's authentic charm.

Reach Punta Spartivento to enjoy stunning views of the three branches of Lake Como and central area towns (such as Varenna , which can be reached in 15-20 minutes by boat).

Varenna , a short boat ride from Bellagio and easily accessible by train from Milan , offers a charming lakeside promenade - the famous Passeggiata degli Innamorati - that leads to the small bay of Riva Grande , where you will find plenty of cafes, restaurants and local craft stores.

Spend a few hours exploring the botanical wonders of Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi , whose gardens weave a tapestry of colors along the lakefront.

Nature lovers can take rejuvenating hikes to historic sites such as Castle of Vezio or along the Sentiero del Viandante , experiencing incredible views and discovering local history.

Tremezzina is the union of several large hamlets (including Ossuccio , Lenno and Tremezzo ) each with its own attractions and features, which I invite you to discover in the dedicated guide.

Among other things, Tremezzina is home to two of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como: Villa Balbianello , a museum and set for international films and weddings, and Villa Carlotta , a museum and botanical garden.

If you have a few hours to spare, explore the area along the Lake Como Greenway , an easy walk that also passes through Tremezzina's oldest villages and places of historical and religious interest. The mountains above Tremezzina also offer many more challenging trails.

Menaggio has a lively town center, which develops around Piazza Garibaldi and leads to the elegant and long lakefront , where there are several bars and restaurants.

Explore the characteristic hamlet  of  Loveno , home to Villa Vigoni , and Nobiallo , a picturesque fishing village.

In addition, if you want to taste the true flavors of the area, you can reach the typical huts and farmhouses of Val Sanagra and Monte Grona with walks that start a short distance from the historic center.

Lecco , less frequented by international tourists than other Lake Como’s towns, is an ideal destination for those who want to experience Lake Como away from the typical high season crowds .

The city, perfectly connected to Milan by train , boasts one of the most beautiful walks along the lakefront. Its historic center, full of bars and restaurants, encloses buildings with obvious traces of its history.

The city is famous for its various ‘ Manzonian locations ‘ mentioned in the renowned Italian historical novel The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni .

Boat tours are basically of two types: public  or  private . Here’s how they work.

• Public boat service

The local public navigation company ( Navigazione Laghi ) provides several routes that connect all of the most popular towns along Lake Como’s shores, at a convenient price . Private boat tours

With a driver at your disposal, you have the chance to choose your favourite itinerary and the length of your cruise. If you are traveling with your better half or with your friends, take a private boat tour and experience Lake Como at your own pace , maybe at sunset and with a fine bottle of prosecco!

RELAX ON A BEACH Beaches in a breathtaking scenery

If you visit Lake Como in the summer, be sure to visit the beautiful beaches on its shores.

Lake Como’s beaches are the perfect place to relax during hot summer days and, in some cases, also offer the opportunity to go sailing or windsurfing (particularly on the northern branch of the lake).

Beaches can be found in every corner of Lake Como, but if you are looking for clean and pure waters , I recommend going to the central and northern parts of the lake.

Of course, the public beaches in the most popular towns are especially busy during the summer, not only by tourists but also by locals.

Therefore, if you want to reserve a cozy spot, you’d better get up early and get to your favorite beach before it is full. Alternatively, reserve your sunbed at one of the lake’s many lidos to experience your day in total comfort.

A few tips for your stay in Lake Como

VISIT A HISTORIC VILLA The best Lake Como's villas and gardens

If you come to Lake Como between mid-March and mid-November, you’ll be able to visit  Villa Balbianello , Villa Melzi , Villa Monastero and many other historic mansions.

A paradise for those who love gardens in bloom and magnificent historic residences!

In the summer, these villas very often host classical music events or guided tours that will introduce you to the history of the place and trivia related to the people who lived in the villa or contributed to its construction.

Sometimes these mansions have special openings in the off-season as well, so if you plan to visit Lake Como in winter I recommend that you check their official websites.

Villa Balbianello, Tremezzina

Villa del Balbianello , in Lenno (hamlet of Tremezzina) is one of the most famous and fancy villas on Lake Como.

Not only a location for luxury events and weddings , but also the set of incredible movies such as Star Wars and Casino Royale .

The villa is mainly  open from mid-March to end of November , and it’s closed on Mondays and Wednesdays (except on holidays). 

Gardens of Villa Melzi, Bellagio

The Gardens of Villa Melzi , in Bellagio, welcome visitors among centuries-old trees, Japanese-style ponds, colorful plants from around the world and more.

Also not to be missed are the distinctive Arab-style temple and the museum , which traces the history of the villa and surrounding area through the centuries of its existence. 

Villa Melzi and its gardens,  open from March to October  and located at a  ten-minute walk  from Bellagio's town center.

Villa Monastero, Varenna

Villa Monastero , located in Varenna, was once an old monastery that later became a patrician residence.

The villa attracts tourists from all over the world because of its beautiful botanical garden  which contains  many species of rare plants  and stretches for more than a mile along the lake shore.

When visiting this famous villa, you will also have the opportunity to see  Casa Museo , a museum that collects four centuries of history in an elegant setting with fine decorations and furnishings.

Villa Carlotta, Tremezzina

Villa Carlotta , in Tremezzo , is surrounded by a vast botanical garden full of ancient trees and exotic plants, palms, rhododendrons and azaleas .

I’d suggest you to  visit Villa Carlotta in springtime , during the blossom period. This is definitely the best time to soak up the scents these beautiful gardens can offer!

Villa Carlotta is also famous for its  art collection . An important museum original neoclassical furniture, as well as valuable masterpieces by Antonio Canova ,  Francesco Hayez , and  Bertel Thorvaldsen .

TAKE A WALK IN NATURE Discover the lesser-known side of Lake Como

Not everyone knows that the hills surrounding Lake Como hide hundreds of trails of various types and suitable for walkers with varying degrees of experience. In a great many cases, there are typical restaurants along these trails where you can taste the true flavors of the area.

I have just created a section on hikes and walks around Lake Como (continuously being updated) that I invite you to look at. Each route I have described offers information about highlights and facilities you can find along your walk.

Here are some areas and walks you might explore during your stay in Lake Como:

Spina Verde Park (Como area)

Spina Verde Park is a protected forest located southwest of Como , and gathers many sites of  panoramic , historical , and natural interest .

The perfect place to escape the hottest hours of summer and taste traditional dishes at one of the area’s huts.

One of the most interesting attractions is the tower of Castello Baradello , which can be reached by following a path that starts from Piazza San Rocco , near the town center, and leads to the tower in about 30 minutes .

Lake Como Greenway (central area)

The  Greenway del Lago di Como  is a walking route of  11.5 km  (7 mi) in one of the most picturesque areas of western Lake Como.

It follows the ancient  Via Regina , the road that was built by the Romans to connect Como with territories beyond the Alps.

The Greenway, which passes through the villages of  Colonno, Sala Comacina, Tremezzina  and  Griante , offers splendid views and examples of  architecture, villas and gardens  (e.g., the unmissable  Villa Carlotta ). 

A great opportunity for anyone to see Lake Como from a different perspective.

Val Sanagra (central-northern area)

Val Sanagra , also known as Val Senagra, is a vast area rich in flora, fauna and ancient rural settlements included between the municipalities of  Menaggio  and Grandola ed Uniti.

It takes its name from the  stream  that flows through the valley and creates  beautiful waterfalls  often topped by fascinating Romanesque  stone bridges .

Val Sanagra is  an ideal place to retreat  on hot summer days, sheltered from the crowds that characterize Lake Como‘s most popular destinations in high season.

In fact, in addition to offering  trails suitable for most people , the valley is also home to a  farmhouse  where you can taste local products or stay overnight, and an  eco-museum  for a different kind of day out.

There are many different ways to get around Lake Como. In general, I recommend that you avoid moving by car and carefully plan your travel with the different services offered by public transportation.

First of all, how to get to Lake Como?  As you can imagine, it all depends on where you start from and where you want to get to. Read this article to find out how to get to Como, Bellagio and Varenna from the main airports and stations in Milan.

Which airport is closest to Lake Como, Italy?

It depends on the area that you want to reach. If you want to reach  Como city ,  Milan Malpensa Airport  is probably the best choice (read here  how to get from Malpensa to Como ). 

Milan Linate Airport  is probably the best if you want to get to  Bellagio , Lecco and  Varenna . However, all the Milan airports allow you to reach Lake Como’s towns quite easily.

In 1818, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote, “This lake exceeds anything I ever held in beauty.” He was talking about Lake Como, and from the high and mighty of the Roman Empire to modern superstars like George Clooney and Madonna, the rich and famous have long been inspired by its stunning natural splendor.

A Storybook Setting

Some places simply have to be seen to be believed, and Lake Como is filled with them. The Y-shaped lake, one of the deepest in Europe, is nestled beneath the Alps and boasts a gorgeous subtropical microclimate that means visitors can sip cappuccino beneath wisteria and palm trees or relax on the beach while gazing across the water at majestic, snow-capped mountains. A guide to Lake Como's highlights — villas, promenades and aperitivo spots not to miss

The western branch of this northern Italian lake is its highlight, home to romantic villas and revamped waterfront promenades in pretty Como city.

Lake Como conveys notions of easy elegance and the Italian art of slow living, and has come to stand for something bigger than it is. Officially called Lario, Italy ’s third-biggest lake has been drawing visitors since the 18th century, when it was a popular stop for European nobles on their grand tours. More recently, it stepped into the spotlight as the backdrop for films including Ocean’s Twelve and Casino Royale . But the lake’s prestige dates to Roman times, when Julius Ceasar drained a swamp at its southwestern end, strategically located near Alpine passes, and funded the creation of a city known as Novum Comum.

It laid the foundation for Como, the main hub to this day and the reason why the lake is commonly known as Como. This spring is the best time to visit the city in over a decade, as sections of its waterfront sidewalks, which had been cordoned off for expansion since 2008, are once again open to walkers. The centre is dominated by the azure dome of the Duomo di Como , one of the last gothic cathedrals built in the country. Behind it is Teatro Sociale , and to one side is the shopping street of Via Vittorio Emanuele II. It’s a good place to pick up a souvenir: mulberry trees were planted on Lake Como’s hills in the 15th century, and boutiques like A Picci sell handkerchiefs and scarves using their silk.

Next to the shop, Via Lambertenghi leads to Via Alessandro Volta , named after the physicist credited as the inventor of the electric battery. The townhouse where he was born in 1745 is marked with a plaque, and around it are some of the most coveted addresses of the time. This is not least thanks to their giardini pensili — gardens built on the Roman walls that once guarded the city centre.

Equally evocative is Passeggiata Lino Gelpi , between the lake and shorefront private gardens. The path’s name pays tribute to the 19th-century mayor who reclaimed a strip of land from villa owners to pave Como’s most scenic public footpaths. It’s a front-row spot from which to watch the lake’s seaplanes land, and it’s especially lovely in spring, when wisteria blooms along the banks.

Continue walking along the waterside road for half an hour to Cernobbio , one of the lake’s most popular resorts. Local Comaschi come to eat at Harry’s Bar , in a piazza by the shore; it serves whitefish from the lake, but the pick is the sole meuniere, floured and pan fried to crispy perfection. Alternatively, taxis wind up the hillside to Il Gatto Nero . It serves specialities from the surrounding region, such as ravioli with ossobuco and saffron, and has become popular among visiting celebrities thanks to its view of the lake.

For a different perspective, take to the water. Ferries link Como to the Alto Lago (‘High Lake’), its northernmost shore. But, if budget allows, the transport mode of choice are Riva runabouts . High-end hotels offer private rides on these mahogany speedboats as part of their activity programmes. Otherwise, companies like Como Classic Boats pick visitors up from almost any hamlet with a dock.

Among the most prettiest is Torno , on the western shore, with red-tiled roofs and a waterfront bell tower. It’s opposite Passalaqua ; built in the 18th century for a scion of local nobility, this villa was crowned the world’s top hotel by The World’s 50 Best in 2023, a year after opening. A glimpse is all you’ll get, as only guests are allowed in, but as an alternative visit Villa d’Este , the lake’s historic grand dame hotel. Further down the shores, highlights include Villa Carlotta and neoclassical Villa del Balbianello , which juts out on a promontory in Ossuccio.

A former fishing community, Ossuccio is also a gateway to Isola Comacina and UNESCO-listed Sacro Monte di Ossuccio , 14 chapels leading to a hillside sanctuary. From its waterfront, the view is a snapshot of what makes Lake Como so alluring: the unassuming hamlets next to larger-than-life villas, and the green, wooded hills sloping down to the deep-blue water. In the distance, always in view, are the Alps. From the Roman Empire to modern-day Hollywood, it’s a scene that’s charmed through the ages.

3 highlights not to miss in Lake Como

1. Teatro Sociale Como’s 19th-century theatre has always had a special affinity with the opera. This summer, it’ll join other venues across the country in marking 100 years since the death of Giacomo Puccini with an open-air production of Turandot, the composer’s final masterpiece.

2. Villa Carlotta The 20-acre botanical garden of Villa Carlotta is a much-loved retreat on the lake. There are monumental trees, a citrus tunnel and a path among the ferns, but it’s most famous for its azaleas, which bloom into full cushions of red, white and pink for a few weeks each May.

3. Isola Comacina The lake’s only island is mostly uninhabited, but its trails lead past olives, lindens and laurels, as well as houses for short-term artists in residence. Every June, the popular San Giovanni Festival reenacts a fire that devastated the island in the 12th century with a red-tinted firework display.

How to Plan a Trip to Italy

There’s a lot to consider when planning a trip to Italy, one of Europe’s most irresistible destinations. Its abundance of history, culture, and spellbindingly beautiful cities mean that it’s also one of the best places to visit more than once.

As such, it’s important to carefully research how to plan a trip to Italy so your journey attains the heights that one expects of this Old World favorite. Once you’re an expert at the preparation, you can begin planning your next trip as soon as you’re home.

Here are the steps you need to plan your trip.

Consider Where You’d Like to Go

Figuring out which part of the country you’d like to visit is probably the most difficult part of traveling to Italy. From the northern top of the “boot” to its southerly pointed “toe”, the Italian peninsula is a unity of sunny Mediterranean landscapes, remarkable cities , and blissful beaches.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to the country or are simply unsure where to go in Italy next, here’s a quick overview of the perennially popular options.

Monterosso al Mare, Cinque Terre

From the north, the Italian Riviera is a mountain-backed swathe of pastel-colored seaside resorts. Part of the Italian region of Liguria, headline destinations here include Portofino and the Cinque Terre. Besides these picturesque fishing villages, Liguria is also home to gems such as its capital Genoa, home to Europe’s largest medieval center.

It’s (almost) always sunny in Liguria , so this region is superb for beach vacations, soaking up the Italian way of life, or dining al fresco on supersized red shrimp.

Journey south along the west coast and you quickly arrive in Tuscany. While, like Liguria, Tuscany is blessed with a wonderful coastline (only with more sand), this region is better known for its hinterland. There you’ll find rolling hills, Chianti vines, and stunning medieval cities such as Florence , Pisa, and Siena.

If you’re interested in Italian culture, Tuscany is second only to Rome in this regard.

Florence is a must for Italophiles, the cradle of the Renaissance, with the famous Uffizi Gallery and even public squares like Piazza della Signora home to world-famous sculptures such as a replica of Michelangelo’s David (head to the Accademia Gallery to see the original).

Travel south and you arrive in Lazio, the region that’s home to Rome , the country’s capital. An astonishing intersection of ancient history, religion, cuisine, and culture, a visit to the Eternal City is a bucket list adventure. Come for the Vatican, stay for the wine bar aperitivi .

Restaurant in Naples

Naples to the south of Rome is one of the best food cities in Italy . The home of pizza, this charismatic southern city throbs with life, its eponymous bay overlooked by looming Mount Vesuvius.

The best views of the volcano are probably found on the southern edge of the Gulf of Naples, from beneath the prolific lemon trees of Sorrento . Perched on cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea, this gloriously handsome town has been a popular seaside holiday destination since Roman times.

Amalfi Town

Take a winding coastal road a short distance south of the Sorrentine Peninsula and you arrive at the iconic architecture of the Amalfi Coast .

This famous run of punchbowl-bright seaside towns acts as colorful ornamentation for some of Italy’s most spectacular coastal scenery. A place to see and be seen, it’s an epicenter for fashionistas, and the region’s famous for its handmade leather sandals and ceramics.

Palermo, Sicily

Across the cerulean Tyrrhenian Sea rise the mountainous profiles of Sicily and Sardinia. Both islands are officially part of the Italian state, yet both are truly unique destinations. Each has a multi-layered history, social idiosyncrasies, and Italian cuisine inflected with flavors that speak to their intriguing past.

Cross the Apennine spine of the mainland, and you’ll reach Italy’s eastern Adriatic coastline. Highlights here include the grand café culture of the northern port of Trieste, the sun-bleached quays of southerly Brindisi, and, in between, Italy’s most romantic place : Venice.

Choose Your Route

It is possible to see a number of Italy’s top-tier destinations in a short space of time. Many of its major cities and cultural sights are clustered relatively closely together in the adjoining regions of Lazio (Rome), Tuscany (Florence, Pisa), and Campania ( Naples , Amalfi Coast).

Beware of burnout, however. So great is this country’s store of lifelike sculptures, mosaic-filled cathedrals, and legendary pizza places that saturation by the sublime is a real risk.

If you’re planning a multi-destination trip, don’t feel you have to choose two places with similar qualities such as cultural big hitters Rome and Florence on the same visit. You could even save one for the next trip, and travel to a city like Venice instead, where you have time to process what you’ve seen in Florence while sipping prosecco on a relaxing gondola ride.

Restaurant in Sorrento

Try to marry up a cultural city visit with a period in somewhere more laid-back like Liguria or Sorrento, where you can, at your own pace, absorb the unique charms of the Italian coastal town experience.

Above all else, Italy’s people are its greatest treasure. It’s tempting to rush from place to place ticking off immortal landmarks, but it’s the chic, scooter-gunning mortals surrounding you that make Italy what it is. Ensure you’re making time for the kind of encounters that transform a good trip into a story you never tire of telling.

Plan When to Go

This southern European country languidly stretches from the Alps towards the center of the Mediterranean. So while the mountains cradling Lake Como and even the country’s central Apennine range often see snow in the winter, Italy mostly enjoys a moderate and mild Mediterranean climate. Of course, this becomes warmer the further south you travel.

In early spring, however, the weather can be overcast. For your surest bet of sunshine filtering through blooming wisteria and onto your al fresco breakfast, travel from May onwards.

From the sun loungers on the Genoese quayside to the coastal archaeological parks of Agrigento in southern Sicily , May offers warmth and the sensory explosion of Italy’s flora. Medieval walls billow with bougainvillea and high street flower boxes glow with marigolds in fragrant blossom.

May also offers the possibilities of fewer crowds in the cities, prior to the start of the high season in June. And while mosquitoes aren’t a major issue, they are more prevalent during summer in Italy .

Once summer fully kicks in, Italy is at its most fully realized. The sunlight illuminates Sardinian shallows the green of cats’ eyes, bounces off the majolica-tiled domes of the Amalfi, and shines up the chrome of parked Vespas in Trastevere . In the evening, the warmth lingers into the small hours.

June and July are perfect months for an Italian beach vacation, although the main beaches will be busy. The situation gets even more crowded during August when the entire country goes on vacation. The Italians, escaping the sweltering inland heat, migrate to the limpid breakers of the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas.

Even as late into fall, the weather remains reliably pleasant. During this shoulder season, as autumn begins to color the Sangiovese vine leaves of Tuscany, trattoria menus embrace truffle season. It’s an excellent time to journey out into the countryside, as fall is also one of Italy’s festival high seasons.

Piazza Navona, Rome

You’ll find towns hung with pennants, celebrating the locality’s medieval heritage. Traditional games are played in piazzas, the townspeople march in costume blowing long fairytale trumpets, and a good deal of aromatic black truffle is shaved onto melt-in-your-mouth pasta.

Think About Extending Your Stay

The pros of Italy’s mid-Mediterranean positioning aren’t just connected to the blissful climate.

While considering how to plan a trip to Italy, be sure to spread out your map and examine which countries are close by. You’ll see how thinking about how to plan a trip to Italy can easily blossom into considering how to plan a trip for a multi-destination Old World extravaganza.

Bordering Liguria to the west is France. Hop across the border and you quickly arrive in Provence and the French Riviera. A destination of timeless glamor and allure, this coastline is a mix of flower-filled medieval hill towns like Èze and glitzy coastal spots like Cannes and San Tropez.

Calanques National Park, France

Go west again and you arrive amid the crystalline waters of the Calanques National Park and Marseilles, France’s engaging second city.

Or look south. A short boat ride from Brindisi and you arrive among the whitewashed villages of the Greek archipelago. Isles of myth and magnificent meals on the quayside, an island-hopping odyssey here is not to be missed.

Journey a little further east again, and Turkey’s honey-colored beaches and elegant minarets come into view.

If you’re visiting Venice or Trieste , it’s a quick journey across the Adriatic to neighboring Croatia. There you’ll find sun-kissed islands like Hvar, fortified medieval towns such as Dubrovnik, and an archipelago of serene unspoiled islands.

Additionally, Italians, as a rule, tend to dote on the younger generation. Traveling with younger children can see you mobbed by twinkly-eyed nonnas (grandmothers).

If you’re concerned about the language, you’ll usually find that most Italians have a good working knowledge of English. Hopefully, you’ll feel brave enough to try a few phrases of your own, and the locals are usually encouraging and appreciative of such efforts.

Time to Pack

Italy’s Mediterranean climate means that you’ll want to have plenty of breathable fabrics in your wardrobe. That’ll ensure your comfort as you’re navigating Rome’s centro storico, especially in the warmth of the summertime.

Cultural Considerations

Navigating Italy’s cultural nuances is a fairly straightforward business. However, if you’re visiting more traditional areas of the countryside, it’s important to be sensitive to the more conservative outlooks that can be found in the smaller communities.

To that end, if you can dress more modestly while exploring small villages then it’s respectful to do so. Think shirts with sleeves and long pants for men, and trousers, below-knee skirts, and covered shoulders for women. Women Who Travel Podcast: An Italian Hotelier Living La Dolce Vita on Lake Como

What is it like growing up in one of the most storied and iconic hotels in Italy ? Ask Valentina de Santis, who was raised in the kitchens and ballrooms of Lake Como's Grand Hotel Tremezzo and now runs the charismatic Passalacqua along with her parents nearby. Lale chats with the hotelier to hear stories of life on Lake Como , get tips on traveling in both summer and the off-season , and what it really means to live La Dolce Vita.

Lale Arikoglu: Hi there, I'm Lale Arikoglu and this is an unashamedly escapist episode. Our picture book setting is Lake Como in Italy, and my guest is a third generation hotelier Valentina De Santis. She operates two glamorous historic properties, each with spectacular views of the lake.

Valentina De Santis: You have the lake in front of you, maybe it's morning, and you have the sun that is sparkling on the surface of the lake. Because you really see the surface of the lake with two million diamonds on it because the sun is reflecting its light. And this creates this incredibly magical atmosphere.

LA: Valentina's grandfather bought the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in the 1970s and restored it to its former glory. It was built in 1910 and hosted popes and Italian aristocrats. In the Arnufo style, the hotel had soaring ceilings and two elevators.

VDS: The story behind the hotel is very beautiful because it was built by a couple that was from Bellagio. So just in front of Tremezzo. They were super big travelers. They loved to travel, so once they got married... The husband was coming from a family of hoteliers while the wife was coming from a family of artists. And they started to travel all over Europe and they did what is now the iconic grand tour of Europe. So they visited all the European capitals. So they did this very, very long trip.

And when they came back on their beloved lake, they just had this dream that was to build a grand hotel that was similar in terms of elegance, charm, character and personality to the ones that they were so lucky to experience during their grand tour. And here comes the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. So they chose that piece of land which belonged to the botanical gardens of Villa Carlotta next door. So very lush, very verdant, very rich.

LA: It sort of feels like a book or another time. I don't know, romantic place.

VDS: Yeah, it's really romantic. You really found the perfect adjective that sums it all. The hotel... Many times it has been compared from the outside only to the Grand Budapest Hotel.

LA: Valentina's parents tracked down a diary from the early days of the hotel.

VDS: So incredible to see the kind of life that was happening at the hotel at the time. And to read the names of the guests that were living the hotel, staying at the hotel. There were stars, actors, aristocrats, noble families. And Greta Garbo, of course, is one of the names that sticks. So incredible, especially to our heart because she was a big, big lover of Tremezzo.

LA: Grand Hotel Tremezzo actually stayed open during both World Wars, and it's featured in the 1932 film, The Grand Hotel starring Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford.

VDS: The movie, the movie is very... It's very intriguing. So it all takes place in a grand hotel. And there is of course, someone that dies and a lot of very, very shocking moments. And at the very end, she leaves the hotel and she jumps on a car and she says, "I want to leave. I want to go to Tremezzo. Only in Tremezzo I will be happy and I'm sure it'll be sunny, so let's go to Tremezzo." And so this really became the most iconic movie moment ever for us. And it's really becoming what I think every guest should feel like coming to stay with us. It'll always be sunny in Tremezzo always.

LA: I mean, it's just the celebrity and the glamour. And there's this sense of past and present, all mashed up in this hotel. What do you think it is that has given it its longevity and its grandness?

VDS: It has such an important past. You can really breathe the past. You can really envision all these very glamorous guests, very elegant, very chic coming down the main staircase. Because once every couple of days there was a big party, there was a ball in the ballroom, there was the orchestra playing the music. They were doing tennis classes, skating classes, boat tours all together around the lake with many, many boats all together. So you enter those doors and you feel it. You still feel that vibrant life glittering and full of elegance, which I think is not so common to find nowadays.

LA: As a child. Valentina pretty much had the place as her fairy tale playground.

VDS: When I tell my story, I compare myself to Eloise at The Plaza . I don't think it was exactly the same. But yeah, I was a very, very lucky girl. My grandfather bought the Grand Hotel Tremezzo back in the seventies. So I mean, since I was born it was part of my life and I was spending the whole summers of my childhood in Tremezzo, not living in the hotel. We always had a house on property. And Italian school holidays are quite long. And what I really loved about Grand Hotel Tremezzo was not spending time with the guests. So many people envision themselves chatting with the guest. I didn't know how to speak English well.

But my big passion was spending a lot of time in the back office. So my favorite places were the kitchens where the chef was treating me with something to try every day and the wine cellar. So I love to put the wines in the right place and-

LA: Very Italian as a child surfing through the wine cellar.

VDS: Of course. I loved it. And then of course, I love to spend time in the back office of the reception area. So of course, there were not so many computers, there were writing machines. So I was writing all the time on a piece of paper and I really felt that I was very useful, that I was giving my contribution to the hotel even when I was six or seven years old. I was the only one to think so. But that was my point of view.

LA: It sounds like you're in the back office, in the kitchen, most of the time, but what was your favorite room to run around in or hide in? I imagine hide and seek must have been fantastic.

VDS: I mean, yes, there was once a year there was a dinner that my family was hosting that was part of a gastronomic event on Lake Como and I had the possibility to invite one of my friends for dinner. And once I had the opportunity to sleep in Suite Greta. So the biggest suite of the hotel, which is the one only room that has always been the suite with a huge terrace. And that was really-

LA: It's like the ultimate sleepover.

VDS: Yeah, the ultimate pajama party. Something that I will never forget. The emotion, I mean the feeling of saying, "Oh my God, I'm sleeping in this huge suite and I'm the little princess of the castle."

LA: After the break, Valentina on her family's 18th century property, Villa Passalacqua, which opened in June 2022. You might have caught it on Conde Nast Travelers Hot list. And since then it's established itself as one of the most coveted hotel stays in a very short time. Passalacqua only opened in June 2022. What was your vision for that hotel?

VDS: The same thing that I... And, I think what happened to the founders of Grand Hotel Tremezzo happened to me and my parents when we first crossed the gates of what was called at the time, Villa Lucini Passalacqua. We really had a dream, we had a vision, and we are a small family of three people, but our souls started to vibrate with excitement.

LA: The Grand Hotel is purpose-built, but Passalacqua was the private home of an Italian count.

VDS: Count Andrea Lucini-Passalacqua was a very, very wealthy businessman, very much into literature, arts, and with a huge culture. And the queen gave him the title of count. And so when he received such an important title, he really felt the responsibility. So he decided to create something special. So he sold the villa that he had, which was much more family size. And there he built Passalacqua that already in his mind was not only a place for what we call Villa Altura. So for the holidays, for spending the summer time enjoying life, but it was also a place for hosting.

Passalacqua has a very long list of illustrious guests, among which you have Napoleon, Churchill, Bellini, who is the opera composer, who lived there for three years. So the idea of the count was to make them meet each other, to spend time with this family in a very special place where you could really enjoy the little pleasures of life. As I said, it was the home of Bellini. So in what is now our suite, Bellini, which is the music room, which is a two-story room with this six-meter tall chandelier. That was really where he was composing his operas. And there is a beautiful piano and we always... When we have special guests arriving, we always play the piano when they check in.

LA: I had to know, what does it actually take to furnish so many spacious 18th century rooms?

VDS: We desperately wanted to buy it. We managed to buy it thinking, "Okay, let's build the hotel." And then after one month, I think we forgot that it was going to be a hotel and we really treated it as if it was our own home.

So every choice... And also something very specifically about the design is that during the whole process, we didn't have any clue of how the final result was going to be because the whole design process was a layering of choices. So we were starting from what we had in every room. I don't know. We had a floor and a beautiful ceiling with frescoes with very, very beautiful and antique frescoes. And so from there... Which is the colors of the walls. And then my parents were going to antique auctions and antique exhibitions, they were collecting huge collections of antiques.

And so we were starting to place one piece of furniture and then okay, from there we choose the sofa and we choose the fabric of the sofa. And then we should choose the pillows and then we choose all the objects around. And so it was really a layering of choices without having really any clue of how each room was looking at the end of this process.

LA: Kind of letting one discovery or purchase or antique kind of lead you onto the next thing that you were going to bring into the space.

VDS: Yes. So it was really like sometimes we really felt, "Oh, here we need something." And then we were looking for something. But many other times, I mean we found something that we loved, we bought it, and then we decided where to put it.

LA: Describe for me walking into the lobby, like the first impression.

VDS: I mean, we don't have a lobby first of all.

LA: Well great. Then walking through the door.

VDS: You walk into the main door and the first thing that you have to envision is this huge door like four meters tall that is made of brass, but it's all handmade with little angels and plants and flowers. And probably it weighs like 2 million kilos and it's been there for 250 plus years and it's really incredible.

So first envision these doors that open to you. And you enter into a beautiful staircase and in front of you, there are incredible chandeliers that we have custom made for the villa in a very beautiful purple color that is in strong contrast with the yellow of the walls. So you have all these lights in front of you and the story, the history, and the colors, and this is the sense of arrival.

LA: I feel like villa means so many different things depending where you are. But in Como it's a very specific type of building. Does it have grounds?

VDS: Yeah. So when you think about a villa, you think about something historical. So a beautiful and very impressive facade. So with a very elegant presence, first of all. Second, super important to me are the grounds.

LA: I know those grounds often have fountains. Could you describe what it's like to walk through there and hear them?

VDS: Yeah, the sound of the fountains was one of the ingredients that I think really catched our hearts that day when we first crossed the gates of Passalacqua. Can you imagine being there surrounded by nature, beautiful century old trees. And then on top of that, you hear constantly, every moment of the day, the sound of so many fountains are all around you in every corner of the gardens. This is something that gives in your heart a sense of peace. So relaxing, so calming, it gives you a sense of nature. It gives you a sense of history as well, because fountains are historical. They're not something that you can really find everywhere now. And so this is a very, very special feeling, let me say. I don't know if I managed to describe it well.

LA: No, you actually really transported me there. Unfortunately, I'm on the 25th floor of the World Trade Center right now, but in my mind I'm walking through those fountains.

VDS: Passalacqua was not only a beautiful villa, but also had the possibility to have everything that a hotel that... I mean the kind of hotel that we have in mind can have. So huge grounds, a lot of spaces, huge suites, huge rooms, the space to have a pool, this incredible underground tunnels where now we're building our spa, which are totally unique.

LA: Coming up, we zoom out and take a wider look at Lake Como about an hour from Milan and close to the Swiss border and ask Valentina how to enjoy it. Is it for everyone? And does it get mobbed in the summer? And we get to the bottom of what it really means to live la dolce vita.

I want to zoom out a little bit from the hotels and talk about Lake Como more generally. It is such a popular destination. I've been there before. I think about it often. It is, I think for Europeans and Americans and people from other places in the world, it is one of the top kind of places to summer. What's the attraction of it and who is going there? What is Como in the summer other than George Clooney on his boat?

VDS: Como in the summer is... I mean, Como, anytime of the year is a combination of factors that make it unique. It's a lake of course, but as a lake is a very specific and special one because it has glacier origins. So it was created basically by ice eroding the mountains. It's a lake that looks almost like a fjord with a very, very tall and steep mountains falling straight into the water, but then greeneries. So it's very green. So when you envision a fjord is not so hospitable, no? While the lake is surrounded by mountains that are full of trees, full of flowers as well. The shores where Tremezzo is located are called Azaleas Riviera. So it's full of Azaleas everywhere. So this is the time of the year, April where the blooming of these pink flowers everywhere.

LA: What's it like, one of the best ways to see Comos from the water, really? What's it like to go out on the boats?

VDS: Absolutely. You must. I mean, being on the boat is something that is always my first suggestion. So you say, "Okay, I want a very big insider suggestion." And then I say, "Take a boat."

LA: People are like, "Really? That's what you got?"

VDS: It doesn't sound so original, but honestly, it's the best suggestion I can give to anyone. There are many different ways to enjoy a boat tour on the lake. It can be with your private captain on a vintage wooden boat, very cool with a glass of champagne in your hand. Or it can be on a public boat, which I think it's not less extraordinary surrounded by locals that sails very, very slowly. I mean, any kind of way you choose to explore. You can even take your little boat and drive it yourself, but it'll give you a completely different perspective. You put yourself in the center of everything, so on the water... So this is the reason why being on a boat is so special. You can see things that you will never, never see from the shore.

LA: As summer becomes hotter across much of Europe. The milder climate on the shores of Lake Como is ever more attractive.

VDS: I mean, there are maybe some places the main towns, especially during the weekend, yes, if you find yourself in one of the main touristic towns in the middle of July on a Sunday afternoon, the crowds of tourists that are maybe the daily visitors. So they really don't get into the heart of Como because it's not so easy to access. Under one point of view, yes, it's very easy to get to Lake Como. I mean, you take a train, you take a car from Milan and then you're there. But then getting into the heart of it and into the real place to be, it's not that easy. So it's not inaccessible, but it's not so immediate.

LA: It's not kind of how... When we talk about Venice, people in Venice don't want the tourists there, or at least that's the kind of narratives I read. But it seems like in Como it's a little bit different.

VDS: It's totally different first because as a local, for example, I don't feel the tourists. I don't. Also, because things that maybe the tourists do more often are not what-

LA: You're not doing it.

VDS: Or not. So it's different than Venice where really tourists are everywhere. There are actually a lot of visitors, the numbers that are speaking very openly about that, but also the geography of the lake is very special. It's like a y upside down and it's very spread. So there are 200 kilometers of shores. So the tour is quite spread out and you cannot really feel in an overcrowded place.

LA: At Condé Nast Traveler, we recently did a really fun collection of stories, which is all about Italy in the off season. What's Como like in the off season? How can you make the most of it?

VDS: I think it's beautiful. I mean, living there for me, the off season is maybe one of the most fascinating moments of the year. So let's speak about winter because the season of Lake Como is much longer than the season of many other destinations like seaside destinations. It takes spring, summer and autumn. So three seasons out of four are part of the season, let me say, of the good season. Low season is mostly winter, and winter is really when the lake expresses the most in terms of fascination and charm.

And so you start to have those days with a little bit of mist just on the water and the light with the sun that is not so high in the sky creates a very, very specific atmosphere. So if you're looking for this kind of very romantic, maybe a little bit nostalgic as well. So it's a little bit more on a nostalgia side during the winter. So it doesn't give you the boost of energy that gives you in the summer. It's a little bit melancholic, but in a very beautiful way.

LA: I mean, I love a bit of melancholy. I love to wallow. So it sounds like it's my time of year.

VDS: It's really... To me, it's so magical. I don't do it so often, but when you take a boat in winter, that is the time of the year where the boat, it's all yours. And there is a little bit of mist. I think that is the quintessential expression of melancholy and beauty and romance.

LA: I have to ask, going into the summer, I'm hopefully going to Italy in September to a wedding. What is the meaning of la dolce vita?

VDS: La dolce vita is a lot, and it's something that I think makes Italy what it is, and it's something that still attracts people from all over the world. It's the way that as Italians really have to enjoy life. So we are speaking about places that were dedicated to what we call now. Now, it's a very vintage world, but we call villeggiatura. So villeggiatura was spending your holidays without having... Now we are used to intend holidays like days off, where you have a super packed plan of million of activities and million things to see.

The villeggiatura was something completely different. So was spending your time without having any plan, just enjoy every single moment and just unplug. But it's really the way us Italians have a very special way to enjoy life. So what describe Italy is the food, the wine, the happiness of the people, the hospitality that we kind of have naturally in our heart. So you put together all the ingredients, and we try, I think, to show to the world that life is beautiful. And it's full of beautiful things, and you have to catch the moment and enjoy it all.

LA: I mean, it's rules to live by, or at least I would like to live by. Valentina, thank you so much for taking me to Lake Como for this episode. Hopefully, I'll be out there on the boat with you sometime soon.

Northern Italy is dotted with idyllic lakes, from the ritzy Lake Como and Lake Maggiore to off the beaten path options like Lake Orta. Tucked in the shadow of the mighty Brenta Dolomites in the Italian Alps, is a secluded body of water that you may have never even heard of: Lake Molveno. 

Although it might not make the list of must-see European getaways , Lake Molveno is a quiet slice of paradise, sandwiched between the towering peaks of Cima Tosa and Cima Paganella. Nestled near the mid-sized city of Trento, near the border of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria, this scenic destination has its own village, situated at the northern end of the lake itself. Swimming and things to do at Lake Molveno

Swimming is one of the best things to do at Lake Molveno, as long, sandy beaches near town make for a great spot to wade into the water. Watersport rentals including kayaks, SUP's, paddle boats, and even electric-powered boats are available at several different areas around the lake.

For those who are looking for an easier hike, you can walk (or bike) around the entire lake within three hours. It's not for the faint of heart at 7 miles long (11 km), but it's a mostly flat stroll and provides gorgeous views with several stops to pop in for a drink. For a bird's eye view of this peak-wrapped lake, take the cable car up the mountain and you'll land at the ski resort of Pradel in the Adamello Brenta Nature Park . Of course, you could also hike up to Rifugio La Montanara where your efforts will be rewarded with fresh made pasta and a glass of wine. Paragliding is another favorite activity at Lake Molveno, especially from spring to fall as the Ora del Garda winds blow through the valley. 

Finally, you can't leave Lake Molveno without exploring the village a bit. This chalet-bedecked enclave at the northern end of Lake Molveno is worthy of a stroll or two on its own and offers up plenty of charming accommodation options. Pop in to Osteria del Maso or Imperia for delicious Trentino specialties like marinated char and gorgonzola polenta.

Getting to Lake Molveno, Italy

Reaching Lake Molveno is no walk in the park. You'll have to put in the work to visit this pristine alpine watering hole. Visitors planning how to get to Lake Molveno should fly in to either Verona or Milan, the (much) larger airport of the two. From either city you'll then take a train to the town of Trento, just to the east of the lake, and then a bus to the city of Molveno. While this isn't a difficult process, it is a bit time-consuming.

If you want to forgo taking multiple types of public transportation and make your way to the lake lickity split, renting a car is a much easier mode of transport and it gives you the ability to make day trips. Once you arrive in Lake Molveno, you can easily spend a day exploring. The real magic comes after the few tourists leave and all that's left are locals and the few visitors who decide to spend the night in this tranquil mountain escape. This is just one of many reasons why Lake Molveno remains one of the most  well-kept European travel secrets .

7. Lake Maggiore: Botanic gardens and Art Nouveau hotels

The lesser-known of the three great northern Italian lakes, Lake Maggiore is not entirely off the radar - it received over 1 million visitors last year - but it's often overlooked by tourists heading to the nearby Lake Como. Which is a shame, since it bursts with the vibrant colours and nostalgic charm of its flower-lined lakeside promenades.

Straddling the border of Italy and Switzerland , Lake Maggiore's real showstopper is its set of three main islands, historically owned by the Borromeo family - one of Italy's most powerful noble dynasties.

Its biggest island, Isola Madre, seems like the product of Agatha Christie's own imagination - a botanical garden filled with tropical plants. The second, Isola Bella, boasts the palatial family home, its terraced grounds peppered with fountains, Baroque grottos and peacocks. 

The entire complex was built as a gift from Borromeo Prince Charles Ill to his wife Isabella in 1632 (prospective husbands, take note). Finally, the nearby fisherman's isle (Isola dei Pescatori) hosts a village which still has a small, but active community of 57.

Over in the mainland town of Stresa, the Borromeo family’s guests could lounge in style in its array of grand hotels. A Belle Époque resort, Stresa's Art Nouveau grandeur is Hollywoodian , and it once hosted the likes of Hemingway and Rockefeller. Nowadays, it attracts a less lofty clientele, but it's still draped in the vestiges of its glorious past.

Beyond Stresa’s aristocratic elegance, Lake Maggiore is not short on other charming sites to visit: from the mediaeval fortress of Arona (Rocca di Angera) to Belgirate's hilltop 11th century monastery, and even a mock-Dutch village built in the 1960s. The adjacent Lake Mergozzo is also an added treat for those of a sportier inclination - a pocket-size lake whose unspoilt beauty and tranquillity make it perfect for a kayak excursion and hiking.

Lake Maggiore is most easily reachable from Milan , particularly Malpensa Airport which is a 40-minute drive from its southern tip. Trains also run from the city's central station to lakeside towns like Arona, Stresa and Verbania.

6. Lake Orta: Island monasteries and UNESCO World Heritage sites

Moving 20 or so kilometres west of Lake Maggiore and its opulent glamour, things take a holier turn in Lake Orta, a smaller nearby lake nestled between pre-Alps.

Peaceful and contemplative in its beauty, it’s understandable why the lake - also known as Cusio - was favoured as a spot for spiritual devotion

The lake’s main feature is an island topped with a vast mediaeval monastic complex: it’s the Basilica of San Giulio, which hosts an active community of Benedictine nuns that has been running for over a thousand years. Visitors are called to silence upon strolling around its narrow alleyways - it’s known as the ‘Island of Silence’.

Above the lake’s main town, Orta San Giulio, also lies one of northern Italy’s most important pilgrimage sites: the Sacro Monte, a UNESCO-protected series of Baroque cavalries scattered across the region. The portico of the main chapel offers an unparalleled panorama of the lake.

Lake Orta is a little more remote than Maggiore, but it’s worth the extra effort. The lakeside town of Omegna can be reached by Milan in roughly two-and-a-half hours with a mid-journey change.

5. Lake Resia/Reschensee: The sunken village in the middle of the Alps

Deep within the valleys of northern Italy’s German-speaking Südtirol/Alto-Adige region, visitors can stumble across a small lake encircled by Alpine forests, from whose turquoise waters emerges a mediaeval bell tower.

It’s a surrealist painting come to life, an Atlantis-like vision that seems almost too improbable to be real.

And yet this is Lake Resia (Reschensee in German), one of Italy ’s most idiosyncratic and beautiful spots - whose history, alas, is far less pretty.

Located a few kilometres from the Austrian border, Resia - in spite of its natural appearance - is an artificial lake dating back to 1950, when residents were forcibly displaced to make way for a reservoir.

In the middle of what is now the 6 km long, 1 km wide body of water was the village of Curon, whose only surviving building is its Romanesque church tower dating back to 1357.

Despite its unfortunate past, Resia’s enigmatic charm is undeniable, and myths swirl around the lake and its tower. Legend has it that its church bells can still be heard ringing in the depths of winter, when the water is frozen over.

Resia’s mysterious aura is such that it has even received Netflix treatment, being the backdrop of the 2020 supernatural drama ‘Curon’.

4. Lake Iseo: Pastoral charm and mountain-top churches

A stone’s throw from the hilltop city of Bergamo, Lake Iseo is in something of a blind spot - halfway between Lake Como and Lake Garda , and consequently overshadowed by the two.

Lake Iseo is not as instantly impressive as its aforementioned siblings, lacking the same sweeping setting and iconic landmarks. But what it lacks in grandeur, it makes up for with its understated, bucolic charm. As attested by French author George Sand, “There’s nothing grand in Lake Iseo’s appearance, [but] its surroundings are as sweet and fresh as one of Virgil’s pastoral poems.”

When in Iseo, visit the village of Lovere, with its pastel-coloured houses and cobblestone streets. Then, take a ferry and head to the Monte Isola - a mountain protruding from the middle of the lake, on top of which lies an 18th-century church , the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Ceriola.

Iseo makes for a perfect getaway when needing a breather from the headier pleasures of Milan or Venice , offering a rural vision of lake life that contrasts with its more touristy, overcrowded peers.

3. Lake Albano: The summer retreat of emperors and Popes

Few places can lay claim to having the Pope’s own blessing, but central Italy's Lake Albano just happens to be one of them.

Located inside a former volcanic crater in the outskirts of Rome , the lake has been a summer getaway for Pontiffs for over 400 years.

But its status as a haunt of the Roman elite dates back to antiquity, when emperor Domitian built his own villa in the 1st century AD.

The lake's scenic main village, Castel Gandolfo, hosts the Papal Apostolic Palace, whose Renaissance gardens are open to the public and boast spectacular lakeside views.

Besides its natural and architectural delights, Lake Albano is a glutton 's dream. One of the local specialties is ‘porchetta’ (roasted pork belly), which can be eaten in a sandwich, as a main dish, or as part of an aperitivo ‘tagliere’ (charcuterie board) in restaurants in the lakeside town of Ariccia.

Lake Albano is a 40-minute train ride from Rome, one that will set you back a mere €2.10. As a long line of Popes can attest, it's the perfect day trip away from The Eternal City when its chaos gets a little too maddening.

2. Lake Trasimeno: A rustic getaway for fishing aficionados

Tucked away in the land of rolling hills and mediaeval fortresses known as Umbria , Lake Trasimeno rarely makes it onto tourist’s itineraries.

It’s rustic and remote, lacking the glitz of the northern lakes or the Vatican seal of approval afforded to Albano.

Yet, it’s a joy to behold, and not a small one either: clocking in at a surface area of 128 square kilometres, it’s almost the same size as Lake Como .

In spite of its significant size, Trasimeno feels cosy and intimate. It’s surrounded by hayfields, castle ruins, and small villages that have remained largely untouched since the Middle Ages - notable examples include Passignano sul Lago and the fortified Castiglione del Lago.

Its waters often appear murky, but they remain highly clean, swimmable and home to countless fish, making it the perfect spot to catch pike and carp. And given Umbria’s status as a gourmet’s paradise, you can enjoy its many specialties, from black truffle to the lake’s own catch of the day.

1. Phlegraean Fields: Volcanic waters and ancient ruins

The southern region of Campania, home to Naples and beloved resorts such as Amalfi, Positano, Capri and Ischia, is more typically renowned for its craggy coastline and crystalline seawater than any of its inland geography.

But tourists should not eschew its set of rather unique lakes, part of the volcanic caldera known as the Phlegraean Fields, 20 to 30 kilometres west of Naples.

An important site since ancient Greek and Roman times, the Phlegraean Fields ’ lakes boast a plethora of archaeological sites and natural parks. Lake Avernus, its biggest, has the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, the Roman god with the power to shapeshift. The lake itself seems to shapeshift too: back in 2022, it left locals and geologists baffled after its waters turned pink, a result of its algae.

The nearby Lake Fusaro is also distinct for its rather mysteriously located floating villa - the Casina Vanvitelliana. It makes for a unique sunset photo op for anyone wanting to steer clear of the region’s more clichéd landscapes.

As an active volcanic site, quakes and eruptions can happen here at any time. The last was almost 500 years ago, although scientists warn that things are rumbling underneath the surface. That may be enough to deter those prone to doomsaying, but the mayor of the local town of Bacoli wants to reassure tourists that the region is safe.

Whether his words prove to be true or not, what’s the joy in travelling without the slightest tinge of fear? And as the Fields are known for their excellent grape production, any anxieties can be quelled with a fine selection of local wines.

Donald and Melania Trump attend son Barron’s high school graduation during break in ‘hush money’ trial

Donald Trump and Melania Trump celebrated their son, Barron Trump, at his high school graduation in West Palm Beach, Fla., Friday.

The former US president and first lady arrived together to the Oxbridge Academy ceremony with what appeared to be bodyguards by their sides.

Donald, 77, was dressed in a white dress shirt, blue tie and navy blue suit. He appeared in good spirits as he was photographed smiling all throughout the occasion.

Melania, 54, for her part, wore a black blazer over a white dress and accessorized the look with a straw sun hat. The normally stoic former model also appeared happy and having a good time.

The proud parents were snapped cheering and clapping while Barron, 18, received his diploma.

The 6-foot-7 teen walked across the stage wearing a navy blue cap and gown, and bright red sash.

At one point during the ceremony, Donald stood up and leaned over the banister of the stands to excitedly wave in the direction of the graduates, seemingly trying to get Barron’s attention.

Melania appeared amused by the gesture, laughing as she placed her hand on her husband’s side.

Donald and Melania were surrounded at the time by other parents and relatives, who attended the gathering dressed in their best spring garbs.

Most of them smiled and clapped along when the 45th US president engaged in the silly moment.

Donald was able to make it to the milestone event because his historic trial in NYC was on a brief break.

The Republican candidate for US president faces 34 counts of fraud for the hush money that was allegedly paid to ex-porn star Stormy Daniels  prior to the 2016 election.

Justice Juan Merchan allowed the court to adjourn Thursday after Donald’s former lawyer Michael Cohen was cross-examined. Those proceedings are scheduled to resume on Monday.

The trial began on April 15, and the real estate mogul made it clear at the time that he did not want his legal battle to conflict with Barron’s graduation.

“I was looking forward to that graduation with his mother and father there, and it looks like the judge does not allow me to escape this scam,” Donald told reporters last month in the Manhattan Supreme Court.

Judge Merchan previously said in response to the request, “It really depends on if we are on time and where we are in the trial.” However, he evidently succumbed to the idea.

Barron is the only child Donald and Melania, who have been married since 2005, share and he is the former’s youngest.

The former “Apprentice” host also has four other adult children from previous marriages: Donald Trump Jr., 46, Ivanka Trump, 42, Eric Trump, 40, and Tiffany Trump, 30.
