33 Terrific Travel Journal Ideas, Tips + Prompts!

Looking for the best travel journal ideas to help you remember your next trip–plus some prompts to help you think of what to write?

You’ve come to the right place!

As a lifelong lover of both journaling and travel, I have experimented with all kinds of travel journals over the years, ranging from the time-consuming to the simple, from the unique to the very basic.

I absolutely love the travel journaling system that I use now (more on that below), but depending on your habits and writing style, there is no limit to the number of ways to preserve your travel memories on the written page.

This guide to travel journal ideas and prompts covers everything from the physical kind of travel diary to use, to tips on journaling effectively, to travel journaling prompts to help you get your writing started.

Remember, though, that the #1 rule of travel journaling is that there are no rules!

Anything that helps you preserve the intense memories of your travel experiences counts.

That being said: here are some of the best travel journal ideas out there!

While there are plenty of beautiful travel journals on the market, don’t feel like you need one to keep a memorable travel diary!

I’ve kept travel journals in everything from a $0.99 composition notebook to elaborate leather-bound notebooks to the Notes app in my phone, and I can confidently say that the best travel journals come from the heart–the physical place you put them is the least important function.

That being said, if you are looking for beautiful travel journal examples, I highly recommend these!

One Line a Day Journal

This is my current favorite travel journaling system, and I’ve been using it for nearly 5 years now!

Here’s the format: each page in this diary has a date at the top (say, August 17), and 5 small sections to write 1-2 sentences below it.

For 5 years, keep a daily journal of a memorable moment, and at the end, you’ll be able to look back and, on a single page, see what you did on all your August 17ths.

While this isn’t specifically a travel journal, I absolutely adore using it as one: the tracking of time through both days and years simultaneously is incredible, and the short time commitment is perfect for my lifestyle that already includes lots of writing.

I do still try to keep a long-form travel journal once a week or so, too, but I love my One Line a Day Journal so much that I recently bought two more, just to ensure I have the next decade covered if they stop making them!

Page A Day Travel Journal

Looking for something formatted for you, but with more of a travel theme and more of a long-form approach?

The Page A Day Travel Journal is perfect for that!

In addition to space to write about your day, there are spaces to note your destination and event the weather.

Classic Leather-Bound Journal

What reading-and-writing nerd among us hasn’t dreamed of owning a leather-bound journal to track their travels in?

I have always enjoyed this journal style and have owned a few in my life!

There are tons of similar ones on the market these days, given how popular they are, but I love the compass detail and great reviews on this one .

Postcards To Yourself

Looking for more unique travel journal ideas?

Consider sending postcards to yourself from the road!

In many destinations, you can mail yourself (or someone else) a postcard right from the souvenir shop where you purchase it–so bring a pen along, write some quick thoughts about your day, and drop it in the mail.

By the time you get home, you’ll have a collection of memories delivered right to your front door that you can save forever.

Travel Checklist Journal

If you’re the kind of traveler who wants to make sure they don’t forget a thing, the Travel Checklist Journal is the perfect choice!

With daily prompts covering everything from the restaurants you ate at that day to your most memorable moment of the day, it’s an in-depth log of your adventures.

I’ll be honest: I could never keep up with this much travel journaling on a daily basis.

But, some people absolutely can!

If you find yourself not sure what to put in some sections, though, don’t worry about it–better to skip a prompt than make your journal feel like work instead of fun.

Bullet Journal

A classic bullet journal like this makes a fantastic travel journal idea!

In addition to writing, consider including drawings, hand-drawn maps, charts, and more.

Standard Notebook

You don’t need anything fancy to keep a beautiful, memorable travel journal!

Anything from a simple composition notebook to the back of a receipt will do in a pinch, and I would never recommend putting off writing because you don’t have the “perfect” vessel to store your memories in.

If you’re looking for a fairly standard, lined notebook that is durable without including much formatting to get in the way of your creativity, though, I love these notebooks .

I’ve owned them in various colors and designs for years, going out of my way to replace my old ones with the same brand when they get full.

Buy one on the road!

While I definitely recommend keeping a travel journal from hour one (airports and train stations are great places to write!), there’s also something special about buying a diary on the road.

If you find a journal you love while you’re traveling, consider picking it up and journaling there from then on.

On Your Computer or Phone

I’ll admit, I’m very biased toward analog travel diary ideas–it’s just my style!

But if you prefer typing to writing, or you just don’t want the hassle of carrying a physical journal on the road, you can easily keep a detailed travel journal on your phone or laptop!

Evernote is a fantastic app for journaling on your phone, though a basic Notes app works fine too.

A Word document or Google Doc can work as well.

Alternatively, you can type and send emails to yourself and store them in a certain folder in your inbox!

There is no wrong way to keep a travel journal–whatever works for you, is more than fine.

That being said, based on my personal experience of keeping travel journals over the years, here’s my best advice for preserving your memories!

inspirational spread travel journal prompts and postcards with notebook in the center

Try to write as often as possible.

Here’s the sad truth: you will forget much of your vacation.

Even if you remember the basics such as where you went, what you did, and who you were with, the passing years will steal the sensory details from your memory, jumble the order of events, and soften the edges of your stories, making it hard to recapture the emotions of your travel experience.

While some of that is the inevitable result of living a full, exciting life packed with beautiful memories, a travel journal can absolutely help preserve those experiences for you for decades to come.

The period of time that I was worst at keeping a travel journal– the first year of our full-time travels –is also the one where memories have faded the most.

It’s my #1 travel regret that I didn’t keep a detailed travel journal that year!

Imperfection is better than procrastination.

Don’t have time to write pages and pages?

Can’t find the right words to capture exactly how you felt seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time?

Don’t worry about it: a couple of sentences jotted down that afternoon while waiting for your coffee to arrive will capture your emotions far better than waiting weeks to find the right words.

flat lay of a travel diary with a map and coffee cup

Write what you can’t see.

Photographs and videos can do a lot to preserve visual and even auditory memory–but they can’t capture scents, or the feeling of the humidity lingering in the air, or how soft the dog you stopped to pet was, or the expression on the waiter’s face as you managed to order lunch in a language that you barely speak.

These kinds of recollections, paired with photos and videos, are invaluable for helping place you back in that moment of travel, even years after it has passed.

How to Ethically Visit Elephants in Thailand

You don’t have to be a “good” writer.

Forget the English essays of your youth: whether you consider yourself a skilled writer or not, you can absolutely keep the world’s most perfect travel journal for yourself.

Because travel journaling is nothing but a conversation with your memory, and you know exactly how to talk to yourself!

It doesn’t matter if you wouldn’t want to publish it as a memoir or that other people wouldn’t understand what you’re trying to say, because you’re the only audience!

Trust me, as a professional writer of sorts, the things that I write publicly–even in more personal blog posts like this –are not nearly as unguarded as the conversations I have with myself when preserving my own travel memories.

kate storm standing on top of a staircase of books at libreria acqua alta venice italy

Don’t edit yourself.

This goes somewhat with what I wrote about being a “good” writer, but it’s a solid tip for travel journaling even if you’re a very confident one.

Each of us sees the world in a completely unique way and will use entirely different experiences and criteria to jog our memories.

If none of the travel journal prompts in this blog post speak to you, ignore them.

Write about literally anything you like–anything that speaks to how you experienced your day.

The uniqueness of how we each see the world is never more obvious to me than when I compare the things that Jeremy writes in his travel journal to what I write in mine–many times, we each remember things that the other person didn’t even notice!

person writing travel journal examples in a notebook with laptop open

Save more than words.

Ticket stubs, brochures, boarding passes, postcards, even foreign currency–anything small and tactile that you can tuck into your travel journal is a fantastic addition.

If you print out any photos along the way or purchase any of the cheesy-but-fun souvenir photos for sale around the world, those can be great components of a travel diary, too.

Full maps are often too big to save in a traditional travel journal, but you can save them separately–or cut out your favorite section(s) and place them in your journal!

Kate Storm in a black coat standing on a brick footbridge in Brugesduring a trip to Belgium

Sadly, the ink on receipts tends to fade within a couple of years, but you can try storing a few memorable ones for a while as well.

Depending on your travel journaling style and how much you collect, you may want to tape these extra items to individual pages or keep them tucked into a separate pouch (cheap and fun cloth zip pouches can be found at souvenir markets across the world–maybe you can buy one along the way!).

For something more fun than basic tape, buy a few souvenir stickers along the way and use those to secure your mementos to the page!

Second Trip to Paris: Books on Banks of the Seine

Avoid spiral notebooks.

If you want a very inexpensive place to save your memories, opt for a composition notebook over a spiral one–trust me.

Between the spirals being pulled out of place from being moved around so much during your adventures to the fact that they’ll scratch up anything they’re stored near (like your laptop, for example), they’re just not worth the trouble.

I learned this lesson the hard way and will never use a spiral notebook (without a cover, that is) for anything while traveling again!

Always keep your travel journal in your carry-on.

I’ll admit, I’ve broken this rule before, but it’s terrifying checking your travel journal–especially when, like my current one, it contains years worth of irreplaceable memories.

Much better to keep careful watch over it in your carry-on/hand luggage!

Wondering what exactly to write down in your travel diary?

These travel journal writing prompts will get you started!

Choose any of these travel journal topic examples from below and expand upon it in detail, and before you know it, you’ll find yourself jotting down details of memories that would otherwise be lost to time.

As always, the point of travel writing prompts like this isn’t to limit what you write–it’s to provide a jumping-off point.

If you find yourself veering off in a different direction after a few sentences, just roll with it!

My Best Travel Moments of 2022

Adventurous Kate contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I will earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks!

2022 was a year of beautiful travel moments. This year took me to nine countries — Mexico, the US, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Iceland, the UK, Portugal, and Austria — and nine new places that I named the best of 2022 .

Going through my monthly recaps to create this post was an absolute pleasure. And it reminded me that a lot of my favorite travel moments are around good scenery, good food, and good people. (Then again, three of these are HIKING. When did I become a hiker?!)

Also, you might notice that several of these moments — the tacos al pastor cooking class, Sardinia sailing trip, Xochimilco boat trip, and Lucha Libre wrestling event, were Airbnb Experiences ! Airbnb Experiences is probably my favorite place to book tours and activities right now, because it’s mostly small, independent tour providers rather than big corporations.

That might change. After all, Airbnb accommodation used to be universally funky and alternative before big developers got hold of it. But the experiences are great for now.

And without further ado — here are my best travel moments of 2022.

Table of Contents

Getting Engaged in Lake Como

Getting engaged after three years together was definitely the highlight of the year! Charlie asked me to marry him in a garden in Bellagio, Italy, close to the shores of Lake Como.

Yes, I did know the proposal was coming. (Who proposes out of the blue? That’s insane!!) I knew it would happen sometime on our three-week Italy trip this summer. But I didn’t know he would save it for the last night of the Italy trip!

He told me he waited because he wanted it to be somewhere special to us. Lake Como was already special for us because it was the first place we went away together, and it’s the kind of place we would return to over and over.

After the proposal, we celebrated in our favorite style — wine and salume . Starting with two glasses of sparkling Franciacorta, followed by Barolo for me and Amarone for him, and lots of meats and cheeses.

I feel so lucky that I found Charlie and we get to spend our lives together and will take many, many more trips to Italy!

My Sister’s Wedding in Cape Cod

My sister and brother-in-law were among the couples who pushed back their weddings due to COVID. They decided to have a micro-wedding in 2020 and push back the big wedding until 2021. The following year, their wedding venue was sold and the new owner canceled all the weddings. I’m sorry, THE FUCK?!

Finally, finally, they had their originally planned Cape Cod wedding in September. I was the maid of honor. And was this wedding EVER worth the wait.

Not only did the venue (Nauset Beach Inn in Orleans) show off one of the Cape’s best beaches, this wedding brought so many people together and kept the good vibes going all night. A lot of people said it was the best wedding they’ve been to, and it’s probably the best one I’ve been to, too!

And I appreciate that Sarah and Matt didn’t feel like they needed to include all the traditions. Speeches? HELL NO TOO BORING. First dance? ONLY 10 SECONDS THEN EVERYONE JOINS IN. Dramatic first entrance? NOPE WE’RE HANGING OUT BEFORE. Kids? NOPE LOL. Cake? HOW ABOUT CAPE COD DIRT BOMBS INSTEAD?

So grateful that they were able to have their dream wedding.

Kate taking a smiling selfie in sunglasses in front of an active volcano spewing bright red lava.

Hiking to a Live Volcano in Iceland

Every now and then, you time a trip perfectly . That was the case for the Iceland road trip Amanda and I planned for August. On August 3, Fagradalsfjall volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula began erupting. We were scheduled to arrive on August 12.

Right away, we switched around our itinerary so we could hike to the volcano on our first day. We woke up early, parked in the very busy parking lot, and set out on our journey.

It took about two hours to hike to the volcano — first, we passed the hardened lava of the 2021 eruption, then climbed a steep hill with switchbacks, then hiked a newly cleared path across a lava field — then passed the construction vehicle doing the clearing! From there it was careful stepping as we avoided the lava clumps.

After heading downhill, we finally saw it: a volcano violently spewing bright red lava in the air.

That moment took my breath away. How lucky was I to be in the same place as this volcano?!

We sat down on the hill, had a protein bar and water picnic, and watched the lava dance, surrounded by hundreds of our new best friends.

By August 21, the eruption was over.

Scientists believe that there will be several more eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula over the next decade. If you’re able to time your trip to see the volcano, DO IT. You will be so glad you did it!!

Learning to Cook Tacos al Pastor in Mexico City

A lot of people like to do cooking lessons on their travels. Me, not so much. I’d much rather do a food tour and kick back and enjoy myself rather than having to do the work. I’m a recipe-follower, not an inventive cook by any measure.

But Charlie and I read gushing reviews of this tacos al pastor class in Mexico City and decided to do it. Tacos al pastor are not the kind of dish you make for one person — the meet is typically shaved off a giant trompo at a street stand.

From the moment we were welcomed into Chef Raja’s beautiful courtyard, I knew we had met a kindred spirit. A kind and interesting man as well as a culinary school instructor, he took us to a market, gave us a lesson on selecting the right produce, and taught us everything from how to roast chiles to the proper knife skills for each of the vegetables.

We each made our own little trompo for one that day, using a pineapple slice and a wooden dowel, and roasted the pork to perfection. We made everything we ate, down to the tortillas and salsas.

This was just a charming day, start to finish, and Chef Raja and his wife were so lovely. Their home is not far from Coyoacan, so it’s a nice activity to pair with a visit to that neighborhood and Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul.

A half-empty basket of strawberries next to a round cake tin filled with tons of red, ripe strawberries.

Strawberry Season in Prague

This might be a weird thing to put on this list, but I swear it was one of my favorite moments of the year. People eat in-season produce in the Czech Republic for the most part; good luck finding asparagus in October or golden beets in April.

But June was when strawberry season hit. Suddenly the farmers’ markets had strawberries coming out of their ears.

I bought a big basket and took it home. Then promptly demolished the entire basket. THESE WERE THE BEST STRAWBERRIES I HAD EVER, EVER, EVER TASTED. And they’re from the Czech Republic!!

It only lasted two weeks or so, but MAN, that was the most delicious time of year! During that time I made a few baked goods and went through a few more baskets, standing over the sink as I ate so the juices could run free.

I need to keep June free next year so I don’t miss those magical weeks of strawberries!

Hiking the Path of the Gods in Italy

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places on the planet — but you might be a bit disappointed when you visit in real life. The towns are gorgeous to view from the water, but they’re crowded, difficult to get around, and extremely expensive.

But for me, the highlight of the Amalfi Coast is hiking the Path of the Gods. From here, you get to hike far above the towns of the Amalfi Coast, enjoying the incredible beauty without any of the crowds (just hikers and goats!).

You start this hike in the town of Bomerano and continue until you reach Positano. You’ll have several hikers on the trail with you (which I think makes it a good choice for solo female travelers), and you’ll want to photograph everything in sight. Each time you think you’ve seen the best view, another will unfurl behind you.

I’d consider it a moderate hike with a few spots of scrambling. Not as bad as I feared. Honestly, the worst part was all the stairs heading down to Positano!

A road through a forest filled with bright red and orange leaves.

Perfect Fall Foliage in New Hampshire

Now that I have a New Hampshire site, I write a lot about fall foliage . It’s the busiest time of year in New Hampshire, and pretty much the only time of year that brings international tourism.

This year, I knew I wanted to bring Charlie on a fall foliage trip after Sarah and Matt’s wedding. We headed up to the White Mountains in early October and the timing could not have been more perfect!

Reds, yellows, and oranges were exploding as far as the eye could see. I found the absolute perfect day and destination to be October 7 in Pinkham Notch, where we drove the Mount Washington Auto Road all the way up to Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast US.

We then drove to Glen Ellis Falls and Jackson Falls , enjoying more foliage views with waterfalls before leaving for Maine.

Growing up in Massachusetts, I honestly had no idea how good we had it in New England until I left. If you’re interested in fall colors in the least, you MUST head to New England in the fall!

The front of a boat pointed out over a calm blue-green harbor surrounded by cliffs and another sailboat.

An Incredible Sailing Day in Sardinia

We took three boat trips in Sardinia. A mediocre big group tour in La Maddalena, a fun speedboat trip in San Teodoro. But the best trip of all was our sailing trip in Alghero .

What made this trip great? The most beautiful sailboat I’ve ever been on, helmed by Captain Andrea. A perfect-sized group: us, a young German couple on their honeymoon, an Italian family of four, and Andrea’s girlfriend. An open-ended itinerary: Andrea taking us to wherever looked good rather than trying to knock off a list of spots. Paddleboards and snorkeling gear for us to use.

Still, months later, I’m thinking about the lunch Andrea served — it was simple Sardinian fregula pasta with tomatoes, meat, and cheese. But it was SO DAMN TASTY, and it was served on that gorgeous boat, with a prosecco toast followed by wine.

My favorite moment? We pulled up next to another boat, and we saw that there was a naked old man on board. We started giggling, the Germans started giggling, the Italian kids started giggling. “Welcome in Italy!” the Italian dad said to us with a laugh.

This was the best activity we did in Sardinia, and I can’t speak more highly of Captain Andrea, who made everything look effortless. One of the best days in Italy this summer. (Even though Charlie got stung by a jellyfish.)

A brightly painted wooden boat on a forested canal in Mexico.

Xochimilco and Lucha Libre in Mexico City

Xochimilco had been at the top of my Mexico City list ever since our planned tour was canceled in March 2020! This year, we returned to Mexico City and I finally got to take part

Xochimilco (SO-chee-MILL-ko) is one of the best cultural partying experiences in Mexico City. You get a spot on a brightly painted wooden boat and you meander around the canals, drinking lots of alcohol and blasting lots of music.

If you come here on a Saturday, it’s WILD. But if you go during the week, when it’s quieter, book a tour with Airbnb Experiences . We got on our boat with a fun mix of travelers and traveled around the canals, eating good food, drinking lots of beer and tequila, even hiring a mariachi band on a boat to serenade us a few songs!

Multiple people on the tour told us that if you’ve done Xochimilco right, you don’t remember getting home that night. Eek! But man, what a fun party-tastic day!

And we kept that going. That evening, we were off to Lucha Libre — Mexican professional wrestling! (Another pandemic-cancelled event in March 2020.) It was wild and funny. But what made it most special was this Airbnb Experience , where our group actually met a wrestler for drinks before going to the show.

That was the best idea ever — because suddenly we had someone to cheer for! When he got into the ring, we screamed like lifelong fans!

Both of these events were SO MUCH FUN. But honestly, I would make Xochimilco the ONE event you do that day. We were exhausted by evening.

(Also awesome? We met a cool couple from Atlanta in Xochimilco and convinced them to join us at Lucha Libre that night. A few months later, I was eating a hot dog in Reykjavík, Iceland, and I heard, “Hey Kate!” It was that same couple!)

A model pirate ship holding several afternoon tea pastries, including a fairy-shaped cookie, overlooking the London skyline.

Peter Pan Afternoon Tea in London

Charlie and I go to London a few times a year — to see his family, for our friend’s bonfire party, for occasional work events. And honestly, we’ve kind of gotten into the habit of doing the same things every time we go. That’s such a waste for a city as vibrant as London!

So we decided to make an effort to do new things on our last trip. We saw The Tempest at the Globe Theatre, had a dinner in total darkness at Dans le Noir, went to the men’s fashion exhibition at the V&A Museum.

But my favorite was the Peter Pan afternoon tea on top of the Shard. I LOVE afternoon tea, but when it’s themed this well, it brings it to the next level!

I brought my friend Dylan and together we enjoyed fairy dust cocktails, mushroom chimneys, Hook’s lime green cake, Tinkerbell cookies with gummy crocodiles, and SO much more. And we got to enjoy it all from the top of the Shard, with some of the best London views in town.

Next time I’m in London, I’m booking way ahead for another themed afternoon tea!

A misty green canyon filled with skinny waterfalls and a narrow river. Kate stands in the distance in a hot pink jacket, holding her arms up in triumph.

Hiking to Múlagljúfur Canyon in Iceland

I used to think that Iceland was too overtouristed. I was wrong. There are parts of Iceland that have quite a lot of tourism — the Golden Circle, Lake Myvatn, and the South Coast are among them — but it’s well-managed and far from destructive.

But is it still possible to get off the beaten path? Definitely. Particularly in the Highlands and the Westfjords.

Amanda and I were sticking close to the tourist trail for this trip. But we found an absolutely magical place — Múlagljúfur Canyon. Close to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Múlagljúfur Canyon is at the end of a very rough road, making it tough for non-4wd cars.

We spent about an hour hiking up into the canyon — and were rewarded with the view above.

It is the best place I’ve ever seen in Iceland. Imagine the mist in the air, rushing waterfalls on each side of you, a bird gliding low and straight through the canyon. Imagine the fresh smell, the spongy moss beneath your feet.

Best of all, we were two of very few people there and for awhile had that view completely to ourselves.

This inevitably brings questions — “Why would you mention this place if you don’t want people going there?” — but I’m confident that the right kinds of travelers will find their way there. The rest will think Jökulsárlón is the coolest thing they’ve seen.

What were your favorite travel moments of 2022?

Kate Young’s Haute, But Not Haughty, Upstate Adventures

By Kate Young

Fourth of July weekend was the start of summer for the upstate crew. We have had our house in upstate New York for about 12 years and try to spend as much of the season here as possible, and the same is true for a bunch of our friends. But for the holiday weekend, the traffic was brutal. We arrived so late that we decided to take advice from Keren Craig of Marchesa and try out a new place in Old Kingston, Kovo , for an easy dinner. We were really into it—they have great salads, hummus, and a genius kids’ bento box. Breakfast at the Phoenicia Diner is also an upstate must.

Our favorite things to do upstate are to hike and swim in swimming holes. In particular, the Kaaterskill Falls on the way to Hunter Mountain. They’re a little bit hard to find and a bit of a hike but once you get there you can ride a waterfall like a slide. There is nothing like swimming in crisp, clean, cold mountain water on a hot day. But, essentially, you can pull the car over just about anywhere you see other cars and find a good little hike and (probably) swim.

We tried to go to the Big Deep (a great swimming hole) in Woodstock, but now that they put up a sign, everyone can find it. It was already crowded at 11:00 a.m.! So instead, we hiked at Byrdcliffe , an arts colony in Woodstock that is over 100 years old. I also do ceramics there all summer.

There are often parties to keep us occupied while we’re upstate, but people really go all-out for the Fourth. Keren and Piers North hosted a party at their barn. Keren looked amazing in an embroidered gown and full Frida Kahlo headdress with her light pink hair. Glamour in the woods! They had Union Jacks and a giant American flag. When the sun finally set, Pink Floyd started blasting and smoke rolled down the hill before the fireworks—amazing, crazy fireworks that went on forever—started. The kids watched from the loft of the barn.

Jenny Gage and Tom Betterton were back from California for the summer and hosted their daughter Sissy’s 7th birthday upstate. There was a Slip’N Slide that shot into the pool, and a Nerf war around the tree house and barn for the kids. The sky broke open for a summer rainstorm, so everyone decided to go to Westwind Orchard for dinner.

Laura Ferrara and Fabio Chizola are the owners of Westwind and started serving pizza at their organic apple orchard and farm a few years ago. It is the best pizza ever! They grow and make everything, including mozzarella and prosciutto. It’s the real deal—farm to table. Plus, they both work in fashion and have the best taste, so the entire thing looks like a scene straight out of a Bruce Weber shoot. If you’re not headed upstate anytime soon, you can buy their honey at Barneys.

Andrew Zuckerman and Niki Bergen hosted their Fourth party at their Japanese/modernist house in the woods with its rolling hills and a stone stream bed. It’s an incredible Zen oasis. The kids loved running around and having water fights while the adults enjoyed the fire pit with a bunch of men wearing leather chaps and cooking Francis Mallman–style. They’re known for the food at their parties, and this year was no exception. Olivia Sammons and Jamie Gray from Matter were there with their three boys, and Taavo and Courtney Somer of Freeman’s with their kids. It’s a little like Brooklyn of the North. After dinner, the guys cooked cinnamon doughnuts in the fire and then it started to rain again, so we took off!

GRANVILLE -- Although Kate Boardman receives her mail in Granville, she considers herself a resident of the world.

Boardman, a Westfield native, has lived and worked in numerous countries, including Thailand, Cambodia and Iran. Her work as a teacher will take her to Australia this month and she can't wait.

Boardman grew up with the desire to travel. Her mother is from England and her father was a member of the Westfield Rotary Club. He introduced her to the Rotary International and at age 15 she studied in Germany through the organization. After that, she was hooked.

"I came back for my senior year at Southwick High School, and when it came time to choose a major in college, I picked one with the word 'international,'" she joked.

After graduating from Southwick in 2005, Boardman attended Roger Williams University and spent another year abroad, this time in France. She worked for an international manufacturer after graduating, but that did not satisfy her love of travel and culture.

"In 2011 I quit my job," she said.

Boardman moved to Thailand and took a course on teaching English as a foreign language. She enjoyed teaching so much she became a certified teacher and was able to work in Vietnam. She then spent time teaching in Cambodia and Iran and is now awaiting her visa to teach in Australia.

She can't imagine any other life.

"I love it," she said during a recent visit home to Granville. "But the longer I'm away, the harder it is to fit in and imagine living here again."

Boardman said seeing how other people live and living in different countries has made it hard for her to "relate" back home.

Boardman has visited 48 countries and has had opportunities she never dreamed she could have, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania over the summer.

"Every time I visit somewhere new or do something on my Bucket List, I just keep adding to it," she said.

View this post on Instagram 5/9 Photo Story from one of the most epic travel days: After hours of climbing up and down jagged rock faced cliffs and what had now become extremely unmarked trails that made us question our bad ass decision, we made it to one of the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World!!!! It was such a breathtaking moment and amazing site to see! Scared of heights, it was soon time to get down...but how? We could see the lame tourists who had followed the prescribed path on another ledge separated by a valley and no access. We were high up, running out of water and the sun was quickly descending. After searching for all our options to get down, we annoyingly realized we had to backtrack the entire way we came and quickly too in order to find water and make it out before we could no longer see where we were going... #petra #jordan #lostcityofpetra #sevenwondersoftheworld #travel #trippic #Visitjordan #shareyourjordan #wondeoftheworld #ancient #wadimusa #indianajonesandthelastcrusade #bucketlist #wanderlust #canon #canoneos #photography #instatravel #girlslovetravel @girlslovetravel #epic #wanderlust #landscape #scenery #views #trekking #secretindianajonespath #secrettrail #offthebeatentrack #roadlesstravelled #mountains #desert A post shared by ☼ KATE ➵ TRAVEL DIARY☽ (@kaleidoskopeeyez) on Oct 10, 2016 at 11:26pm PDT

For Boardman, the greatest thing about traveling is meeting new people.

"People everywhere are extremely welcoming," she said. "I've found that the people that have the least amount of things are the most happy and generous."

Boardman said everywhere she travels she is welcomed by native people.

"It's really humbling," she said. "It's been amazing to understand the world better. If more people did this, there would be less hate and wars being fought."

Boardman has fallen in love with many countries and cultures, but said Iran is the most beautiful place she has visited -- so far. She is looking forward to teaching in Australia and said she expects it will be the most like American culture. She hopes to visit the Outback and cross that off her list. And she will likely add at least a few new list items.

"I'm open to different opportunities as they come," Boardman said. "I want to continue to teach and would like to work in an environment that fits me as a teacher, which would be somewhere more progressive."

For now, Boardman will keep teaching and traveling and cross off her ever-evolving bucket list while chronicling her adventures via her Instagram account, @girlwithkaleidoskopeeyez .

Kate Middleton ‘May Not Appear in Public for Rest of the Year’: Sources

A source told The Daily Beast that Kate Middleton’s diary for the year was “empty,” adding they “would not rule out another video message updating the country on her health.”

The Princess of Wales will probably “not appear in public for the rest of the year,” and is being “surrounded” by her birth family as she continues a course of preventive chemotherapy having been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, royal sources and friends of Kate Middleton and Prince William have told The Daily Beast.

Kate and her family are expected to spend next week, which is a school holiday, at her and William’s country home on the Sandringham Estate. Her parents, to whom she is close, are thought likely to visit.

William is expected to devote even more time to his family over the next six weeks having been unexpectedly gifted time off after the royal family said they would be stepping back from some engagements to avoid distracting from a snap U.K. general election called this week and due to take place on July 4.

One source said they do not expect to see Kate back in any kind of public-facing role in the medium term, adding it was possible she would remain absent from public life for the rest of the year.

The source said: “Lots of people involved in planning need to know what all the principals are doing a long way in advance. I am told that Kate’s diary for this year is empty. There is nothing planned. She may not appear in public for the rest of the year.”

(The Daily Mail’s Richard Eden reported Thursday that Kate’s friends have told him “we might not see Catherine again until the autumn—and only then if she has recovered fully.”)

Asked how the Palace would deal with the inevitable resurgence of conspiracy theories and speculation that a protracted absence would provoke, The Daily Beast’s source said: “I would not rule out another video message updating the country on her health. That proved to be a very effective way of keeping the conspiracy theorists at bay.”

A friend of Kate and William told The Daily Beast: “The key thing for her now is avoiding any kind of stress or anxiety and just getting on with the business of getting better. They will bail out and be off to Sandringham the moment school breaks up.”

The friend said that Kate has preferred to lean on and confide in her family rather than her and William’s circle of friends, many of whom will be at the Duke of Westminster’s wedding next month (along with her husband, who is best man).

They said: “The circle of trust is tiny. She has been surrounded by Carole and Michael, and (sister) Pippa and (brother) James have obviously been there for her as well. They are an incredibly tight family, and Catherine feels absolutely confident relying on them. They have been there for her for decades and never let her down.”

It is now five months since Kate was last seen in public, and the Palace may indeed deem it necessary to give another update—whether via video or a more traditional statement—if Kate really is going to remain unseen for many more months to come.

Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis in a video message released March 22 , saying she had initially thought her condition was non-cancerous, but discovered the truth after successful abdominal surgery in January and subsequent tests which revealed cancer—as yet of an unspecified kind—was present.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, appears in this still image from a handout video released March 22, 2024, in which she announced that she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy after cancer was found to have been present, following abdominal surgery.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, on March 22, 2024, announced in a video that she is undergoing preventive chemotherapy after cancer was detected following abdominal surgery in January.

BBC Studios/Handout via Reuters

Kate said she was in the early stages of having preventive chemotherapy, which began in late February, and said she had needed to take time to explain her condition to her three children. It had been “an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful,” Kate said.

Kensington Palace said Kate was on a “recovery pathway”; the princess herself said she was well “and getting stronger every day.”

“Please do not lose faith or hope, you are not alone,” Kate said, directly addressing fellow cancer sufferers.

There is no doubt her office is certainly managing expectations downwards when it comes to the question of her return to work.

Just this week, for example, her team clearly implied that she was not working from home when it announced the publication of a report commissioned by her Early Childhood initiative into how large businesses can better support the early childhoods of their staff’s children.

While making clear she had read the report and been kept updated on it, and that her office was on top of things, the statement carefully avoided any suggestion she was spending her days sitting up in bed with a computer. A source described as a “senior royal aide” went further when it came to explicitly downplaying any suggestions she had an ongoing daily workload, telling the Mail : “She will return to work when she has had the green light from doctors.”

Her office declined to comment to The Daily Beast on when Kate would next be seen in public or if she was working at home, but one courtier said: “The Princess is continuing her recovery at home. She continues to need the space and time to prioritize her privacy, as she said in her video.”

There will certainly be a focus on family time next week, with her children’s school on recess for “half term,” a one-week holiday from school.

Kate and William are expected to “bail out” of their Windsor home on Friday, one friend said.

They are likely to spend the short holiday at the family’s country house, Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where there is plenty of room for her mother and father ( Carole and Michael Middleton) to stay, and privacy is easy to enforce thanks to a protective local community, many of whom are either friends with or work for the royals in some capacity.

Kate and the children fled to Anmer in March when school broke up for the Easter vacation. Just hours after arriving there Kate released her unprecedented (pre-recorded) video in which she revealed she had cancer. The couple had deliberately delayed releasing the news until the school holidays had started to protect their children from unwelcome attention in the schoolyard.

The Daily Beast has been told by fellow parents at the smart private school which Kate’s children attend that she has not been seen at the sports matches and the other school events she and her husband usually attend. However, she is understood to have done occasional school runs, one parent said, but while keeping a low profile.

“There have been rumors she has done drop-off, but I haven’t seen her since the video,” said one. “We all feel very protective of her. Ask anyone at the school—they are amazing parents.”

You're never too young to have good taste.

A Florida family, and specifically their tiniest member, has gone viral all over social media thanks to one baby's elevated preferences. The video, posted to TikTok on May 17, has amassed millions of views and likes.

"I have a question for everybody," says a woman's voice behind the camera, identified by TODAY.com as Bailey Wise of Tampa. The frame pans to a young girl climbing excitedly off her bed over to a diaper-clad baby held in a man's arms, who TODAY identified as her father, Will Wise.

"Who wants to go to the Four Seasons Orlando?!" the voice continues. The baby, who is named Kate according to TODAY, responds not a beat later with a resounding "ME!" complete with a raised hand and growing smile.

The young girl in the background, Kate's 4-year-old big sister Madelyn, agrees, enthusiastically insisting "meeeee!" as the adults can't help but giggle at the younger sibling's reaction.

"If the @Four Seasons Hotels is looking for a baby ambassador my niece got you 😂🤣😂🤣😂" Bailey's sister, Stefanie O’Brien, captioned the eight-second clip, posted to her account @sobrizzel.

Internet goes crazy for "bougie" baby.

The "digitine:" The 'digital guillotine' and why TikTok is blocking big name celebrities

Naturally, Kate and her family went massively viral for the few-second video, wracking up more than 42 million views and 5.3 million likes. After all, what does the internet love more than cute babies? Nothing, except maybe cat videos.

Netizens couldn't help but be enamored both with the baby's enthusiasm, but her seemingly advanced intelligence and ability to understand the question - after all, who wouldn't be excited about the Four Seasons? That baby has taste.

"Oh my mother I would be dazzled to attend the four seasons Orlando," joked one commenter. "I would be delighted mother to accompany you on this exhilarating excursion to the four seasons Orlando I will be sure to pack the acquired necessities for our trip. my excitement is palpable," said another.

"The baby booked the trip," wrote one commenter, echoed by another who said, "I think the baby is in charge of the family finances," said two more.

"She's so little but so grown," one comment with thousands of likes summed up.

Countless response videos have flooded the platform making silly edits , putting Kate in a top hat , creating voice-overs and recreating the video itself.

Several sports teams got in on the joke as well, including the Atlanta Hawks, Cincinnati Bengals and the Spanish-language MLB account.

Perhaps most importantly, Four Seasons Hotels responded, posting on TikTok for the first time since 2022. In the video, Four Seasons employees can be seen lip-syncing along to the audio from the original clip in several Four Seasons locations, overlayed with the text "Who wants to welcome our newest ambassador for Four Seasons Orlando?!"

"Let the adventure begin  @Stefanie O’Brien  fam 🏰✨@FourSeasonsOrlando," said the caption.

What is the "fully conscious baby" TikTok trend?

The popularity of the Four Seasons baby left some marveling at what appeared to be an example of advanced understanding for such a young brain. Jokes about Kate being a super-intelligent baby rolled in as viewers marveled at what they saw as eerily adult-like behavior.

The juxtaposition between Kate's very young diaper-clad appearance and her seemingly grown-up reaction spurred a side conversation about "fully conscious babies" - young children who are cognitively advanced in a way that resembles a mini adult or someone beyond their years. Think something like a real-life "Boss Baby" or Stewie Griffin from "Family Guy."

The concept has spawned memes and videos galore. In some, people edit voice lines over clips of kids, making it look like the children are speaking in full adult sentences. Others are sharing clips of young children looking like mini-people, doing "adult" things like throwing darts at a board.

Some users have also taken to making videos sharing stories (fake or otherwise) of "fully conscious babies" they've met in their own lives, like one man who described briefly babysitting a young girl only to discover she could speak and understand more English than her parents believed.

While the clips are silly and fun, in reality, they show nothing abnormal.

In the original clip, Kate is about 1 year old, though she may appear younger to some. The processing and language skills she demonstrates in the video are age-appropriate, as are those of other children shown in similar videos.

Children begin to learn and process language very early in life, and while every baby is different, you can generally expect to see language milestones including the use of real words (hi, dog, mama, dada) and the understanding of basic words and concepts (their name, cup, juice, daddy, yes, no, come here, want more?) between 7 months and 1 year old.
