We had a wonderful time. We were on our honeymoon/vacation and the weather was good.

Great trip for a family get together!

May 23rd, 2024

This was a great cruise. We worried about going too early in the season because that was the only time we could go, but everything worked out perfectly and the weather was pretty good. Of course, we came prepared with thermals and a rain jacket. There is still a problem with Covid on ships. Two people from our group did get Covid.

Enjoyable cruise

May 16th, 2024

Alaska has been oversold by cruise line. There are too many people to actually experience what people have gone there for.

Japanese Experience South and North

May 5th, 2024

Greeted at many ports by dancers, tyco drummers, and folks greeting and waving at us upon arrival and departure. All cities were very, very clean with helpful people. Felt extremely safe in all cities. Once the logic of the subway and addresses can be identified it is easy to travel. Left Japan feeling very peaceful.

Japan - Fantastic Country to Visit

We had a fantastic time visiting Japan. It was an unforgettable experience visiting the country. The cruise itself was alright but not the best we have experienced in the past with Holland America.

Lovely Itinerary

Mar 19th, 2024

Great itinerary! Bring cash! Many places you go do not accept credit cards, like all public transports in Japan. ATMs do not take US credit cards for withdrawals, either. With cash, you can use the automated money exchange machines at the port terminals very easily.

Enjoyable Asia cruise

Mar 7th, 2024

we enjoyed this cruise very much. The ship was very nice, staff was so nice and they work so hard. Our ports of call were very interesting, and our excursions were great. We saw alot in every port, and things that we had not seen in other places in the world. We enjoy Holland America cruises, as they are not real fancy, but simple and the food is always very good.

Phantastin Asia Cruise

Jan 24th, 2024

Loved the clientele on this ship, very quiet and well mannered. The cruise director was outstanding and also our restaurant waiter Team Kadek and Tian in the main dining room. We enjoyed the entertainment and the ‘Happy Hours’ in the Bars. The itinerary of this cruise was super.

I would do it again ! Thank you my best travel angel of the world - Lincoln for awesome planning , booking and care .

Holland America Westerdam Review

My home away from home over the last couple of weeks has been the Holland America cruise ship Westerdam. The Westerdam is not a large ship by today’s standards, but it still has a population greater than each of the hometowns of my parents. With a little less than 2,000 passengers and 800 crew it is considered to be a medium-sized cruise ship.

Holland America Westerdam

New Things on the Westerdam

The Westerdam came out of dry dock after a refit in May of 2017 and has some new changes.

Rijksmuseum

As appropriate with the Dutch heritage of Holland America , the Westerdam became the first ship in the Holland America fleet to include a new lounge on Deck 1 that is an extension of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This area is decorated with prints from some of the famous works of art in the museum as well as two backlit video walls that cycle through thousands of pictures from the museum’s collection. More programs are being planned for hands-on art programs.

If you are looking for a quiet place on a busy ship then you might be interested in the Retreat which is a collection of cabanas on a Deck 11 sundeck that can be rented by the day or for an entire cruise. A single day’s rental for a day bed, two chaise lounges and bottle service starts at $45 per day on port days. There are 12-15 cabanas.

EXE Area in the Crow’s Nest

The old expeditions desk has been moved into the Deck 10 forward crow’s nest area. This means that you can book your tours and get shore excursion advice here, but in addition, they have expanded the kind of advice you can get on touring by yourself.

In addition to help from the staff, there is a library of resources and also two large table top flat screen touch displays where you can bring up some information on each port of call. Currently, that information is a bit sparse, about one paragraph for each of 4-5 highlights for the port. Often those highlights are not for the port city itself but for the nearby featured city (Seville for Cadiz, Rome for Livorno, etc).

Virtual Bridge in the Crow’s Nest

Also in the Crow’s Nest space are two transparent LCDs that display information on the current operation of the ship. How fast is the ship moving and in what direction, how fast are the propellers turning? Geeks, like me, should check it out.

westerdam cruise ship review

Coming Soon there will be a new display with the ability to see where the other ships in the fleet are. I am not sure where that will be located, but probably either here in the Crow’s Nest or in the LCD panels on Deck 2 midship where you can currently see where the Westerdam is along its voyage.

Holland America Westerdam - Question of the Day

Question of the Day in the Crow’s Nest

Just behind the Virtual Bridge, there is also a large LCD with a couple of kiosks that ask one question a day. All of the questions are location-based:

What country was the first stamp in your passport?

Where did you have your most adventurous meal?

You get an idea of how diverse the passengers are on your cruise. On the Mediterranean Cruise, I did from Barcelona to Rome in August, there were guests from 44 different countries as well as a great variety of ages.

America’s Test Kitchen

The Westerdam has a partnership with the TV show “America’s Test Kitchen” to bring culinary entertainment and education to the ship’s passengers. In the recent refit of the ship, that space was upgraded to make it a more inviting venue.

The ship’s program has 4 primary musical entertainment venues, including the main stage. All 4 can now be accessed on Deck 2 via the Music Walk. Starting in the bow of the ship they are:

The main stage is a two-story performance venue that can hold around 600 passengers. It is used for the evening stage shows by the Westerdam singers and dancers. It is also used for other performers like comedians and magicians. In the morning it is the primary meeting point for excursions. In the afternoon it is used for a daily movie and bingo.

Lincoln Center Stage

Most days a four-piece piano quartet from New York City’s Lincoln Center plays 3 times from afternoon to evening. Their repertoire is based on but not limited to classical music.

Holland America Westerdam - B.B. King's All-Stars band

B.B. King’s All-Stars band

For blues, rock, soul and Motown music, visit the B.B. King’s All-Stars band which play in the same space used for America’s Test Kitchen during the day. If you are looking for music that makes you want to stand up and dance and a dance floor to strut your stuff, then this is your spot.

Billboard Onboard

For music that you could have found on the Billboard charts, visit this venue to hear dueling pianists. Their last show of the day is usually a request show and is easily the most popular.

The Westerdam has 3 restaurant spaces but 7 different offerings, not counting room service.

Holland America Westerdam - Main Dining Room

The Main Dining Room

The main dining room is on deck 2 & 3 in the stern of the ship with large windows for a view. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and provides a daily changing menu, plus a small standard menu. The food and the waiter service are good. This is a slower less hurried space. I recommend the main dining room for dinner but it can also be a good option for breakfast or lunch on a day you have a bit more time.

The dress code for the Main Dining Room is smart casual. They recommend no jeans, shorts, or swimwear. This is not the restaurant to wear your “I’m with Stupid” T-shirt. So… leave stupid at home. Around one night a week is a Gala night, usually during a sea day, when the dress code is jacket and tie for men and a dress or nice slacks for women.

The Lido is located in the stern on Deck 9 and is a cafeteria service. There are 9 different stations with an array of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

For breakfast, there are omelet stations. The cold cereal options are fairly limited but the hot options are good. The pastries are wonderful. The ship has 4 full-time pastry chefs.

Holland America Westerdam - Lido

For lunch and dinner, there are Asian options including sushi, Italian options including pasta and pizza, a great salad bar, really nice pre-made sandwiches, a carving station, specialty salads, hot specials, desserts, cookies, ice cream. Take at least one lap around before committing yourself. There are no trays and portions are a reasonable size… but you can always get more if you would like.

There are waiters in the Lido who can get you a cup of coffee or a glass of orange juice. If you sit in the same section, they may come to know you by name. I sat in Nada’s section on the starboard side.

Holland America Westerdam - Pool Deck

Sitting for the Lido overflows to the center of the ship to the tables by the main pool as well as to the fantail, aft of the Lido dining room where you can be in the open air. Smoking is permitted on the fantail but is limited on most of the ship.

There is no dress code for the Lido so it is preferred by some people. I recommend at least trying the main dining room once at the beginning of the trip because I think the experience is superior.

Holland America Westerdam - Pinnacle Grill

Pinnacle Grill

On Deck 2 there is a 3rd dining room which is the Pinnacle Grill. Eating at the Pinnacle Grill is an additional cost while the main dining room, the Lido and even room service are included in the cost of the cruise. The Pinnacle has a primary menu most days but also is the location for two popup restaurants (Sal de Mer and De Librije) which happen around once per cruise.

The menu for the Pinnacle Grill features food from the Pacific Northwest of the United States and both the steaks and the seafood are quite good. This is, in my opinion, the best dining experience on the ship, not to take anything away from the options at the main dining room.

Around once per cruise, the Pinnacle Grill becomes the Rudi’s Sel de Mer (Sel de Mer means “sea salt”, in French), featuring a particularly seafood laden menu. While I am not a seafood eater, many of the other participants for the recent press trip I participated in found this to be their favorite night of the cruise.

Holland America Westerdam - De Librije -Deconstructed Apple Pie

The second pop-up restaurant in the Pinnacle Grill is based on the menu for a well-known Amsterdam restaurant. This pop-up did not receive as many high marks from our press group. The menu consists of 5 courses, each with a choice of one of two options. De Librije is trying to surprise you. They are experimenting more with food so you will find items like deconstructed Apple Pie or lobster covered with avocado. If your favorite magazine is Bon Appetite, then this might be the right dining experience for you. It wasn’t the right one for me.

Holland America Westerdam - Canaletto

Each night a corner of the Lido turns into a separate Italian restaurant with a collection of small plates, pastas, and main plates. The intention is that you would order family-style, but do what you prefer. This restaurant is also a separate cost but we quite enjoyed the experience.

Holland America Westerdam - Dive-In

Just outside the Lido and also for no additional cost is a small grill window that serves very good burgers, hot dogs and grilled chicken or mushroom sandwiches. There is also a taco bar set up just outside the Dive In. This was one of my favorite options for lunch. To my surprise, the crispy fries are better than most of the restaurants from home. You order at the window and get a pager. While you are waiting for your order, make yourself a taco.

Water, ice tea, coffee, and tea are available at meals for no additional charge. Soft drinks, specialty coffees, wine, beer, and specialty drinks can be purchased at one of the ship’s 8 bars. You can purchase a variety of beverage plans ahead of time or on the first day of the cruise from one of the bars.

I had a non-alcoholic beverage card which can be purchased for $25 but is worth $50. That was enough to keep me in Diet Coke for the rest of the trip.

All the bars will have happy hour specials like buy one drink and get the next for $2. You are allowed to bring on one bottle of wine per person per cruise without a corkage fee of $18. Some of the excursions to wineries will include an exception to that policy where the wine you purchase can be brought back on the boat without additional fees.

The Usual Suspects

While some things are new on the ship, much of the ship will be familiar to someone who has cruised on a mainline cruise ship.

As you would expect, the Westerdam has a casino that operates when the ship is at sea. It includes table games and slot machines.

Holland America Westerdam - Art Auctions

Shops and Art

Westerdam has the usual complement of shops selling t-shirts, captains hats, and expensive jewelry. There are also art auctions. I like some of the art, but even if I were in an art-buying mood, it’s not why I cruise.

The Greenhouse Spa & Salon and Fitness Center

There is a spa, salon and a fitness center on Deck 9 forward of the pool.

I can’t tell you much about the spa or salon. I had a $100 credit and never used it, but I heard great things from my fellow passengers who could not understand why I wouldn’t get a massage, acupuncture or at least a haircut.

The fitness center is free, although there are also paid classes and consultations available. It is well equipped and I am sure that when I return home the scale will tell me I should have used it even more than I did.

What we found was that the spa was busier at the beginning of the cruise and offer more specials at the tail end of the cruise.

Holland America has a nice web app that you can get to using the shop’s wi-fi without purchasing internet access. You can use it to see more information on tours you have booked or book additional tours. You can book reservations for dining. You can also create a custom schedule by selecting which of the many activities you want to participate in. You can also book an internet package. The speed is still not what I would say is fast, but Holland America no longer charges by the minute or by the Mb of data, that that makes internet connection much more practical.

westerdam cruise ship review

There are religious services, happy hours, trivia contests, bingo, AA meetings, bridge player meetups, port talks, and the usual array of activities. There is always something on the ship to hear, do, eat, or drink. If you run out of that, there are hours of movies and TV shows on your TV in your cabin and some live TV channels.

If you are sitting quietly reading a book, it’s because you want to sit quietly reading a book.

westerdam cruise ship review

Jude Day, the Westedam’s Cruise Director says of the Westerdam specifically and Holland America in general, “The crew is our strength.” This was my 3rd Holland America cruise and I understand what she is saying. Fancy menus are nice, high tech displays are cool, but what makes a cruise ship really work is the tireless work of her crew. They work long hours and remain pleasant.

Much of the crew is from the Philippines and Indonesia. We learned on a galley tour that the most important supply on the ship is rice. Run out of that and the crew just might get grumpy. The 800 crew members consume 500 pounds of rice a day.

Day also said, although I cannot verify it, that “turnover with their crews is less than any other company.“

westerdam cruise ship review

Holland America Westerdam is a good product and made even better by some of the recent changes.

Also, unique among cruise lines, HA has a Catholic priest on all cruises to celebrate Mass. Nice for passengers, and even more so for the crew, since may are Catholic and spend weeks at sea away from family and spiritual support.

' src=

I did not know that was unusual, thanks Gloria!

Here is more about Catholic priests on cruise ships http://thecatholictravelguide.com/cruises/will-catholic-priest-cruise/

Hi I was wondering about the price of wine in The Dining Room, to see if it is worth purchasing an alcohol beverage package. We are cruising around Vietnam.

I don’t have that number off the top of my head and it does depend on if you get a wine package.

Can someone tell me if there is a laundry on board or a laundry service?

Their fact sheet says “Self-service laundry/ironing facilities (Not available on Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam or Noordam)” They do have a laundry service including an unlimited option but I don’t know the price.

Hi regarding laundry does anyone know if there is an ironing service Cheers

Does fine dining require just a coat, business shirt a tie, and of course matching trouser and dress shoes? Or do I have to wear a tux? Thank you, calvin tsuruda

Chris Christensen

You never have to wear a tux if you don’t want to. I find that what people ear is changing over time so I would check with the cruise company or look on Cruise Critic before you go to see what the standards are for your cruise.

Getting to Know the Ship – Westerdam Cruise Reviews

The Westerdam, part of the Vista Class ships, is a remarkable vessel that offers a truly luxurious and immersive cruise experience. As a part of Holland America’s fleet, this lovely ship is renowned for its elegance and attention to detail. With a gross tonnage of approximately 82,500, the Westerdam spans a length of 936 feet, making it a sizable and impressive ship. It has a capacity to accommodate around 1,964 guests, ensuring a comfortable and intimate atmosphere onboard. To ensure a fresh and modern ambiance, the Westerdam underwent its last refurbishment in 2017, where it received a range of enhancements and upgrades. From the stunning public areas to the well-appointed staterooms, every aspect of the ship reflects a commitment to providing guests with a sophisticated and unforgettable cruising experience.

The maiden voyage of the Holland America Westerdam, the fourth ship to bear that name in the Holland America Line fleet, took place on April 14, 2004. The ship embarked on its inaugural cruise from Venice, Italy. It sailed on a 7-day Mediterranean itinerary, visiting ports such as Dubrovnik, Croatia; Athens, Greece; Kusadasi, Turkey; Naples, Italy; and Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy. The maiden voyage marked the beginning of the Westerdam’s service, offering passengers an exciting and memorable journey through the captivating Mediterranean region. Now that we know a little bit more about the history of the ship, let’s head on to our Westerdam cruise reviews.

Embarking and Disembarking

Embarking on your Alaskan cruise voyage aboard the Westerdam is a smooth and efficient process. Upon arrival at the embarkation port, you’ll be guided through the necessary check-in procedures before stepping aboard the ship. These cabins are designed to optimize the available space, ensuring that guests have plenty of room to relax and move around without feeling cramped. It offers a queen-size bed and 3 closets. Overall, the large interior cabins on the Holland America Westerdam offer a serene retreat where we can unwind, with the added benefit of sufficient space and an atmosphere conducive to peaceful slumber. This is 2where we stayed. Ask your travel agent on how to book this type of room aboard MS Westerdam for your next cruise.

Westerdam Cruise Reviews – Fine Dining and Casual Dining Options

The Westerdam offers a range of dining options, catering to every palate. For an elegant culinary experience, guests can indulge in the ship’s fine dining venues, including the Vista Dining Room which is the main dining room and the Pinnacle Grill. From the exquisite Pinnacle Grill, known for its premium steaks and seafood, to the Italian-inspired Canaletto, you’ll savor gourmet creations prepared by skilled chefs.  We recommend trying the candied bacon at Pinnacle Grill. We also recommend making reservations for Pinnacle on Gala Night where you can enjoy dressing up and having an elegant meal.

Holland America Westerdam Canalleto

The Canaletto restaurant on board the Westerdam offers a delightful culinary journey inspired by the flavors of Italy. This charming eatery provides an intimate and inviting ambiance, perfect for an elegant dinner with loved ones or a memorable celebration.

Holland America Westerdam Canaletto

With its delectable menu crafted by talented chefs, guests can savor authentic Italian dishes featuring fresh ingredients and traditional recipes. From mouthwatering pasta dishes to flavorful seafood and indulgent desserts, Canaletto promises a delightful feast for the senses. Seating is limited so make reservations ahead.

Holland America Westerdam Lido Market

Casual dining is equally delightful, with the Lido Market offering a diverse array of international cuisines, fresh fruit and open seating. The food was very good and I can tell you that ice cream in the Lido market was very popular. Don’t forget to try their famous cinnamon bread pudding .

Holland America Westerdam Lido Market

I recommend getting 2 cookies and making an ice cream sandwich. It’s  DaBomb.com lol! The Dive-In serves up the best burgers at sea and hot dogs by the poolside, perfect for a quick bite on a sunny day. The best burger is “The Gainer”. With specialty restaurants like these as well as Tamarind and 24-Hour Room Service, there’s something to satisfy every craving. If your looking for coffee , we found the best place for that is the Explorations Café aka the Crow’s Nest. Here you can find beautiful views and plenty of space to play board games.

Entertainment

The Westerdam provides a wide range of entertainment options to suit all tastes. You can catch captivating live performances at the Main stage, featuring talented musicians, singers, and dancers. The Music Walk showcases different genres, including classical, rock, and blues, while the casino offers a thrilling atmosphere for those feeling lucky. The Piano Bar and Billboard Onboard are popular spots to enjoy live music and sing along to favorite hits. They do not have the B.B. King’s Blues Club on this ship. For a unique experience, you can visit the Rolling Stone Lounge, which features a variety of music styles such as R&B, rock, and pop.  We absolutely enjoyed the rock room on this ship. The band was awesome and they played a great variety of music. We also loved how much they interacted with the crowd. Also the dance floor was big enough that the whole crowd enjoyed dancing. It was definitely the hot spot every night and all seats were full.

Holland America Westerdam Step One Dance Company - Westerdam Cruise Reviews

The World Stage, a state-of-the-art entertainment venue, hosts Broadway-style productions, live music concerts, and engaging presentations. We really enjoyed watching the Step One Dance Company. With an array of entertainment options, the Westerdam ensures that every guest has a great time.

On the Holland America Westerdam, art enthusiasts and passengers alike can appreciate the exquisite collection of museum-quality paintings adorning the ship’s interiors. The ship’s art collection showcases a diverse range of artistic styles and periods, each carefully selected to evoke a sense of elegance and cultural enrichment. From classic masterpieces to contemporary works, these paintings create a vibrant and visually stunning ambiance throughout the vessel. Things to Remember

As part of our Westerdam Cruise Reviews, we decided it was time to remember a few things. As cruising resumes and ships become closer to maximum capacity, it’s important to be considerate of fellow passengers and mindful of the shared spaces onboard. One important reminder is to avoid taking up space in the Lido market during lunch and dinner rushes by playing games or reading. These peak meal times can be crowded, and it’s essential to allow other guests to find seats and enjoy their meals comfortably. Instead, take advantage of the numerous quiet and picturesque areas on the ship that offer beautiful window views for playing games or reading. The ship has dedicated libraries, lounges, and cozy nooks that provide serene environments and stunning vistas, allowing you to indulge in your activities without interfering with dining areas. By being mindful of the needs of others and utilizing the quieter spaces available, you can ensure a pleasant and considerate cruise experience for everyone on board.

Common courtesy is essential when cruising to ensure a harmonious and enjoyable experience for everyone on board. It’s important to practice considerate behavior during shows and performances. This includes silencing your phone to avoid disruptions, refraining from talking during the performance, and avoiding putting your feet on someone else’s seat in front of you, as it can be both uncomfortable and disrespectful.

Additionally, showing consideration towards the hardworking crew members is crucial. They dedicate themselves to providing excellent service and ensuring your comfort throughout the voyage. While occasional challenges may arise, it’s important to address any concerns or frustrations in a respectful and constructive manner. Voicing your opinions and seeking resolutions can be done without resorting to mean-spirited or rude behavior. Treating the crew with kindness and appreciation goes a long way in fostering a positive atmosphere on the ship.

Ensuring the safety and well-being of children onboard is of utmost importance for a smooth and enjoyable cruising experience. Parents are kindly reminded to keep a watchful eye on their children, especially in busy areas like the Lido Market and pool areas. While the ship offers a plethora of exciting activities for young guests, it’s essential to teach them about appropriate behavior and respecting personal space. Climbing on tables or other passengers’ belongings can disrupt the dining experience for others and pose safety risks. As fellow passengers, we all share the responsibility to maintain a respectful and considerate atmosphere. This also goes for the pool area as well. By actively supervising their children and setting clear boundaries, parents can help create a harmonious environment where everyone can relax and relish their time onboard the ship.

By practicing common courtesy, we can create a welcoming and respectful environment for everyone on board, allowing for a memorable and enjoyable cruise experience for all.

ms Westerdam Itineraries

Ms westerdam review, review of ms westerdam.

The 2004-built MS Westerdam cruise ship is the 3rd Vista-class Holland America liner, with sisterships ms Oosterdam ,  ms Noordam ms Zuiderdam .

The vessel (IMO number 9226891) is currently Netherlands- flagged (MMSI 244128000) and registered in Rotterdam .

History - construction and ownership

Holland America Line (HAL) is a Seattle -based cruise company owned by Carnival Corporation (shipowner). Between 1873-1989, HAL was a Dutch cargo and passenger shipping company operating regular Transatlantic crossings between Holland and the Americas. HAL was founded in 1873 as "Dutch-American Steamship Company" headquartered in Rotterdam Netherlands . In 1989, HAL was acquired by Carnival Corporation for around EUR 530 million. Among the company's assets are the Westmark hotel chain (Alaska-Yukon), Worldwide Shore Services (warehouses-logistics) and Half Moon Cay (Caribbean private island).

Holland America MS Westerdam cruise ship

The 2000-passenger ship Westerdam balances the duty to honour cruise traditions with adding just enough advanced conveniences to keep things stylish and modern, with comfortable dining venues, various onboard facilities, larger-than-average cabins, and, most of all, with the gentle service of ship's crew members. Westerdam's restaurants provide an option of traditional seating scenarios as well as open, more versatile ones. Passengers might still learn how to mix a martini cocktail or create a flower arrangement, but they might also take computer classes which range from an introduction to e-mail to editing digital photography. Cruisers might watch a chef (the vessel's or an expert from Holland America Line's Food & Wine Magazine partnership) represent a recipe, or they might take part in small group clusters which actually get to make fantastic Food Network-like Culinary Arts Center cuisine.

Decks and Cabins

MS Westerdam staterooms (984 total, in 30 grades) include 162 Suites, 479 Balconies, 181 Oceanviews, 162 Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 170-205 ft2 (16-19 m2). Nearly 70% of all passenger cabins have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 28. The largest accommodations are the Pinnacle Suites (1000 ft2 / 93 m2, with terrace sized 320 ft2 / 30 m2).

The boat has 11 passenger decks , of which 7 are with cabins.

Implemented fleetwide in 2019, "Club Orange" program provides exclusive amenities to Suite passengers booked in categories Neptune and Pinnacle. Bonus perks by this program include:

  • priority services (check-in, disembarkation, tendering, dining reservations)
  • 24-hour concierge service (assistance, information, reservations)
  • exclusive dining venue (serving complimentary Pinnacle Grill breakfast and Dining Room dinner, plus exclusive dishes)
  • dedicated Concierge Desk (Guest Services and Tours)
  • room service (a la carte breakfast menu with complimentary gourmet dishes - including smoked salmon, steak and eggs)

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Westerdam's Vista Dining Room is a 2-deck venue at the aft end of the vessel. One deck is allocated for the guests who choose conventional fixed-seating dining and the other for open seating (passengers can either make a reservation or simply walk in). For those who prefer to be seated at small or large tables should use the reservation system. Three themed teas - Cupcake, Indonesian and Royal Dutch - are served once during a sailing. Holland America's Lido buffet rates among the best organized at sea. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night snacks, the spot is in bright, jazzy colors with seating in the main pool area under a magrodome cover (sliding glass roof) and on the adjacent aft deck. Food is arranged in themed stations that serve up sandwiches made to order, salads, pizza, sushi, stir-fries and typical hot fare. Thus, you don't have to wait behind a passenger picking through the salad bar if you want to move on to the meat station.

ms Westerdam Wiki

One of HAL's "compass ships", Westerdam is company's 2nd Vista-class liner, with sisterships Noordam , Oosterdam , Zuiderdam .

Wester means "West" (in Dutch).

The vessel (Fincantieri Marghera yard/hull number 6077) has volume 82862 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 10965 tons, max draught 8 m. The powerplant is based on 5x Wartisla-Sulzer marine diesel engines (models 3x 16ZAV40S plus 2x 12ZAV40S) with combined output 75,14 MW (100764 hp). The propulsion is diesel-electric and based on 2x ABB Azipod thrusters with combined output 35,24 MW (47260 hp). The registered shipowner is HAL ANTILLEN NV, while the registered manager is HOLLAND AMERICA LINE NV.

Westerdam's Inaugural Cruise/Maiden Voyage was on April 25, 2004. The 12-night voyage (roundtrip from Venice) visited destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean/Aegean Sea., including Malta (Valletta), Croatia (Dubrovnik), Greece/Greek Islands (Santorini, Rhodes, Samos, Piraeus-Athens, Katakolon) and Turkey (Kusadasi-Ephesus). In November 2004 the ship was relocated to North America and from Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale operated 7-day Eastern and Western Caribbean roundtrip itineraries.

The vessel's Godmother is Renette Pauline Soutendijk (aka Renee Soutendijk, 1957-born Dutch actress).

The ship's interior design theme is Dutch exploration - numerous sculptures, statues and paintings of famous Dutch ships.

In its Atrium area, Westerdam has a cut-glass Dutch sailing ship sculpture. This HAL ship's art collection includes many pre-Columbian artifacts (including 5000-year-old carved figures imported from Ecuador), and also many contemporary artists' signature sculptures and paintings. During its 2007 extensive refurbishment, 34 cabins were added, and major refits were done to several public areas.

Westerdam is HAL's 3rd vessel with this name. The 1st ship was in service for the company in 1946-1965 (scrapped in Spain). Curious fact about this liner (combined cargo-passenger vessel with numerous first-class cabins) is that it was sunk 3 times during WW2 (before the maiden voyage in 1946) - in 1942 (by Allied forces), and in 1944 and 1945 (by the Dutch resistance). MS Westerdam I operated Transatlantic crossings monthly (between Rotterdam and NYC ). The second Westerdam ship was launched 1986 under the brand Homeric (Home Lines), HAL acquired the company in 1988, and in 1989 the vessel underwent a major drydock refit (was lengthened by 130 ft / 40 m). After 13 years in HAL service, in 2002 this vessel was transferred to Costa Cruises (renamed Costa Europa), then chartered/leased to Thomson UK (Marella Cruises) as Marella Dream .

MS Westerdam refurbishments review

During a major drydock refit in 2007 April, Holland America Westerdam ship was stretched by adding a 130 ft / 40 m long midsection. The refit resulted in the following changes:

  • 34x new passenger cabins were added when a whole section was installed aft on decks 6, 7, 8, thus narrowing some of the aft-located balconies.
  • Many public spaces were redesigned, and the Sea View Pool area (aft on Lido Deck 9) was expanded.
  • Changes were done in the area of Library/Shopping Arcade. The Windstar Cafe and the Internet area were removed, new shops were added.
  • The Oak Room was replaced by the Explorations Cafe (added to Crow's Nest /Observation Deck 10).

The drydock refurbishment in 2017 (April 14-26, done by Fincantieri in Palermo Sicily Italy ) resulted in the following changes:

  • (deck 10) new balcony and inside cabins (a total of 25) were added on Observation Deck 10.
  • (decks 1 and 2) Vista Lounge (the ship's theatre) was renamed "The Main Stage".
  • (deck 2) Lincoln Center Stage (chamber music hall) was added starboard. Sports Bar was transformed into Billboard Onboard.
  • (deck 11) The Retreat (adult sundeck area) was added on Sports Deck 11 (replacing the two Canvas Cover areas there).

General maintenance drydocks (by Sembcorp Marine in Singapore ) were conducted in 2020 (January) and 2023 (January-February). During drydock 2023, ALMACO Group was awarded the turnkey contract to modernize the ship's galley/kitchen areas. Almaco's contract included adding flight-type/rack-type dishwashers in the Lido Market's pot wash area (aft on Deck 9) as well as replacing various equipment. Curiously, to access the pot washing area, yard workers had to cut a hole in the bulkhead and to remove/replace the interior in the Vista Dining Room (lower level on Deck 2) situated on the other side of the bulkhead.

Note: ALMACO Group (1998-founded, Kaarina Finland-based company) specializes in turnkey projects for newbuild cruise ships and modernization of marine and offshore catering, stateroom and laundry areas.

Here is a review of our Westerdam Alaska cruise from August 20 th – 27 th , 2023 round trip from Seattle WA.  This was our 2 nd HAL cruise, but it had been a super long time since the previous one, so it was like a new experience for us.

Embarkation :  We live in the area, so we arrived an hour before our set 12PM check in time, but since we were in a Neptune Suite, I knew we had anytime priority access.    Access to pier 91/92 was easy, not much traffic considering both Westerdam and the Discovery Princess were disembarking/embarking at the same time.  Short line to drop off luggage, then made our way through security (remove my belt?  Really?) and then a super short face recognition check-in and straight onto the ship.  Super easy compared to some other embarkations we’ve done (looking at you NCL!)

Cabin : Neptune Suite 7068.  Rotterdam deck, next to the glass elevators.  Originally thought this might be an issue with noise of traffic and the elevators, but once passed the cabin door we couldn’t hear anything.  The cabin was super big and easy to maneuver around in, especially at night for the bathroom visits.  Lots of storage, as I assume this is for longer cruise itineraries.  King sized bed seems larger than our Cali King at home.  The couch was a bit firm, as were the chairs, but comfy enough for a reading spot.  TV was bigger than I was expecting, however there were several times the TV channels would not come in.  Slightly annoying when catching up on the news.  Left the dressing area for wife, which she loved and now wants on all our cruises.  The bathroom was spacious if a bit dated even after the refurb a few years ago.  I barely fit in the shower (6’2”, 300 lbs.) so I opted for the shower/tub.  Worked well enough, but wish the shower and tub had glass rather than a curtain.  The balcony was very large, and we enjoyed sitting out on it, especially in port or the Hubbard Glacier.

Internet :  Spotty but worked well enough.  Upgraded to the Streaming version to unlock some more accessibility.  Sometimes it came super-fast for a ship (30 down and 3 up), other times barely working.  Most likely a location issue globally.   They’ve done a good job of putting in a lot of wireless boosters/nodes throughout the ship, easily identified by the ceiling mounts.

Neptune Lounge :  Loved it.  Found lots of snacks here and my wife and I would read for hours here.  This one was redone in January of 2023, so has a totally different look.  Loved their coffee machines.  They rotated on the same schedule every day, and wife was super excited that they had Swiss Style Muesli available during breakfast hours.  The Honor bar was great and easy, just fill out form (PS – A great cabin fridge stocking cheat is to check out what you want here!)  Sheila and Gabriel were super helpful and always checking on everyone.  They were some of the busiest concierges I’ve ever seen on a cruise ship.

Food-MDR :  Easily the BEST food I’ve had in any MDR.  Far surpasses that of NCL and even Princess.  Was so good we ate there almost every night.  Had late dinner at 7:30pm, so we had the awesome team of Francis and Alex every night.  I’m a picky diabetic eater, so they were very creative in helping me out.

Food-Buffet:   Tried it 3 times, once was successful.  Do not go when it is busy.  That is a nightmare.  We were all stuffed in the buffet on embarkation, so it was hot, no tables and long lines.  I hated it.  Next time we tried breakfast but came during a busy time.  My scrambled eggs were underdone, but the bacon and sausage were very good.  Unimpressed still.  Last we tried dinner when the menu in the MDR was sup-par for me.  This one worked out well, as it was mostly empty!  Loved everything I tried (Steak, Cashew Chicken, Burger, Cod, Cobb salad).

Food-Pinnacle Grill :  We ate breakfast here most mornings, as it was included with our Suite.  No complaints here.  One of the places we could get free machine coffee.  We also used our HIA dinner here.  Shared candied bacon, quite good.  The Wedge salad was a nice sized portion and very tasty.  However, my first bite of my Halibut had 4 bones in it (I choked on a bone once so I can’t stand bones in fish).  The staff was appalled and quickly asked if I wanted something else, which I did and got the Filet Mignon instead.  Honestly, probably one of the best ones I’ve ever had.  Easily better than NCL’s Cagney’s.

Food-Dive-In :  I think these were some of the best burgers we’ve had on a ship.  The fries were good too, especially with the Dive-In Sauce.  And a taco bar?  Yes, please.

Entertainment: Don’t really know.  Never went.  There were a few shows we wanted to try, but we felt old and slow after dinner, so we usually just went to bed and read for a while.  Since Lincoln Center was discontinued, there wasn’t much we really wanted to see or hear.

Ports :  We really enjoyed the BBB excursion in Sitka (Birds, Bears and Barnacles).  Was scheduled to take the tram in Juneau but I chickened out.(I hate heights).  Didn't get off in either Ketchikan (Spa appt) nor Victoria (8-11:30pm?  Really?)

Shopping : Very impressed.  Some of the better shops I’ve seen on ships, and well stocked.  My onboard account took some serious hits this cruise.

Library :  All cruise ships need to follow this model.  Lots of choices.  My wife went through 3 or 4 books.

SPA :  Loved it all.  Got a couple of things done here, loved it all.  Even though the same company does the spas on all mainstream lines (HAL, Princess, NCL, Royal, Celebrity, Carnival etc.), prices here were less than what we paid on NCL and even Princess, which I found odd but appreciated.

Disembarkation :  Saddest day of the cruise.  As independent and suite passengers, we could stay until 9:15 but only did so until 9:00.  Straight down from deck 7 to 2, scanned card, walked off ship into building, found luggage and quick scan at Customs and we were out.  Less than 15 minutes.  Much better that others (looking at your hour long lines again NCL!)

We really enjoyed this cruise and will easily cruise with HAL again.  We’ve already booked another for next year on the Koningsdam to try when one of their “large” Pinnacle ships.  We loved this small Vista class ship, but I do wish we had more food options that can only come with a larger ship.  The crowd was mostly older than us (mid 50s) with a few families and grandparents with grandchildren.  This suited us just fine after an oversold NCL Bliss in late June with 4800 guests.

Thanks for your review. It would be easier to read if you re-post with bigger font and different font.

Hey @scooter6139  glad you enjoyed your cruise and will be back for another!

Next time, since you'll be on the K'dam try Grand Dutch Cafe on deck 3. There are some delightful (code for yummy) food options: the ham & cheese panini-type sandwich (not actually called a panini), Dutch pea soup, creme filled chocolate covered flaky pastry ball Bossche Bol), tall thick sliced apple 🥧 .  All really good and make a great lunch or snack option.

Also, since you like the Dive In burger, I recommend you try the burger at lunch in Pinnacle Grill.

Yay for happy cruisers!!

@scooter6139  Thanks so much fo your review. We will be boarding the Westerdam next Sunday and very much looking forward to it. Our last several Alaska cruises were not on the Vista Class so we are looking forward to returning. I have actually always loved the Vista Class.

Thanks for the review - we'll be on the Westerdam in a few weeks.

Since I'm a huge coffee drinker, I was hoping you'd made it to the Crow's Nest/Explorations as well, but it is kind of out of the way, and Neptune Lounge probably served much of the same purpose for you.

We did go there twice!  Wife ordered an Americano, said it was decent but she liked the machine coffee better.

Was it very busy? My first goal on a ship is to find the easiest path to espresso.

Haha

Yes.  She just waited for a break in the crowd/line then went and got her coffee order in.

When we went up there on embarkation day there was quite a long line.

That's too bad. I'll probably have to plan on getting up extra early. (I don't know if it's possible to avoid long lines anywhere on embarkation day.)
