Best time to Visit Mauritius

Best time to visit mauritius, month by month according to experts.

Best Time to Visit Mauritius, Month By Month According to Experts. Mauritius has a tropical climate. There is a fairly steady temperature and rainfall pattern throughout the year on the island. Mauritius experiences two distinct seasons.

You should plan your trip to Mauritius for the winter months, between May and October. With average daytime highs around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, this is a wonderful time to explore the area. December, January, and February are typically the warmest months of the summer, which runs from November to April. Temperature-wise, spring and fall are virtually identical; nevertheless, summer is also the wettest time of year.

Best time to visit Mauritius by season

During the winter, it is relatively dry, whereas in the summer there can often be heavy precipitation and tropical storms. The temperature on the coastal areas varies between 71°F in winter and 93°F in summer. The sea temperature varies between 71°F and 81°C. The best time for diving is between November and April, when the sea is at its calmest. The North and West coasts are the best areas for diving enthusiasts as these are the most sheltered.

Mauritius can be visited throughout the year. The ideal months are May, June, and September to November. However, most visitors from the northern hemisphere come to Mauritius to escape their winter – December to April. The cyclone months from January to March are not ideal though. Even if there is no cyclone, rainfall tends to be high at that time. July and August can be windy on the east and south coast.

May to November – Dry Season – Winter

  • Lovely weather with lots of sunshine
  • Less hot and humid than in the Wet season
  • June to October is the whale watching season
  • Perfect for exploring and hiking
  • The east coast is windy, especially in July and August

December to April – Wet Season – Summer

  • Warm beach destination during the northern hemisphere winter
  • Hot and regular rainfall
  • Cyclone season from January to March
  • Christmas and Easter holidays are busy

Why winter is the best time to visit Mauritius

Jan 5, 2022 • 6 min read

According to Mark Twain,  Mauritius was the model for heaven. It’s not difficult to see what he meant. Concentric circles of open ocean, a sapphire lagoon and beaches of powdery white sand wrap around the island. It's the perfect setting for luxury resorts and an astonishing range of activities both in and out of the water.

Mauritius has depth of character to go with its good looks. Its rugged interior, fascinating towns and intriguing cultural and culinary mix combine to make this so much more than just a world-class beach destination.

Best of all, the island can be enjoyed year-round, though the busy Mauritian summer (equivalent to the European and US winter) is when most come to take advantage of the blissfully warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Whether you join the crowds or prefer the quieter off-season, here at the best times to visit Mauritius.

High Season (December–February), is the top time to get out on the water in Mauritius

When it's winter in Europe and North America, it's summer in Mauritius, so the island ticks all the boxes for a perfect warm-weather Christmas-New Year escape. Yes, it can get busy, prices for accommodation and flights peak and the occasional late cyclone is always a possibility. But the balmy temperatures and near-transparent waters are ideal for a vacation spent by, and in, the water. Put simply, Mauritius in summer is everything you’d expect from a tropical, Indian Ocean island.

The top things to do in Mauritius, from beaches to botanical gardens

Have a cheaper and quieter experience during Mauritius' shoulder season (March–April & October–November)

Shoulder-season months in Mauritius mean lower prices. It’s less humid than during the high-season summer months and ever-so-slightly cooler, but without losing that agreeably tropical feel. You’ll share the island with fewer visitors, and underwater visibility is ideal for diving and snorkeling. These months can also be a brilliant time for festivals.

Save and enjoy cooler temperatures during the low season (May–September)

The low season in Mauritius - coinciding with the European and American summer – is cooler, cheaper and almost as appealing as visiting during the more popular months. So long as you avoid the European (especially French) school holidays, it can be lovely and quiet with few other travelers around. If there’s a downside, rougher seas can reduce visibility for divers and snorkelers.

January’s early weeks are some of the busiest of the year, but the rush is already tapering off by the end of the month. Cyclones are always a possibility, but fireworks are far more likely to come from Chinese New Year celebrations, especially in Port Louis . Key Events: Chinese New Year

February is the height of the Mauritian summer and the warm temperatures, clear waters and thinning crowds make this one of the best times to visit the island. During the month of February (or March, depending on the lunar calendar), some half a million Hindus make a pilgrimage to the sacred lake of Grand Bassin for Maha Shivaratri: it’s one of the most memorable cultural events on the calendar. Key Events: Maha Shivaratri

Everything seems to be easing in March, from the risk of cyclones and the high temperatures to the cost of accommodation. It’s an excellent time to visit the east coast of Mauritius in particular (where accommodation in particular can be busy and prohibitively expensive at other times). Festivals are further highlights, from the Fête du Poisson to open the fishing season in Rodrigues , to the colorful Hindu celebration of Holi, when everyone gets doused with water and colored powder. Key Events: Fête du Poisson, Holi

Temperatures are starting to cool, although it’s all relative out here in the tropics. Unless your visit to Mauritius coincides with Easter (when you can expect lots of visitors flying in from Europe, with accommodation price hikes to match), it’s a lovely time to visit. Tamil New Year usually falls in April, much merrymaking in Mauritian towns and themed dinners and cultural performances in many hotels. Key Events: Tamil New Year

View of the lagoon around Le Morne Brabant on Mauritius

May ushers in the cheapest time to visit Mauritius (except during the school holidays in far-off France), and there’s a noticeable shift from balmy to mild temperatures. Rain is also unlikely to upset your travel plans during May.

Even in the depths of a Mauritian winter, it’s still warmer on a beach here than in much of Europe or North America. Despite much of the northern hemisphere being on holiday, June accommodation prices are usually pretty reasonable.

July broadly mirrors June as Mauritius settles into its usual pattern of mild winter temperatures, clear skies and choppy seas that are better for surfing and windsurfing than for diving and snorkeling. Kitesurfers should make their way to the renowned Rodrigues International Kitesurfing Festival, which has been running since 2013. Key Events: Rodrigues International Kitesurfing Festival

You can look forward to the best of the low season in August, when you’re almost guaranteed to have very little humidity and rain, combined with pleasant temperatures. Generally low prices also help, though vacationing Europeans can make things a little busy on the coast.

Many regular visitors will tell you that September is the best time to visit Mauritius. Visitor numbers (and prices) are at their lowest, and temperatures are yet to climb to their summer heights. If you’re anywhere near Port Louis on 9 September, head to the Père Laval Shrine on the city’s outskirts for one of the biggest celebrations of the year for the island's Christians. Key Events: Père Laval Feast Day

October could just be the best time to visit Mauritius for perfect holiday weather. There’s a hint of tropical warmth in the air and the rain and cyclones are still a few months away. The island’s Hindus celebrate Divali (Dipavali), the Tamil Festival of Light, in late October or early November and it can feel like the whole island is joining in the party. Key Events: Divali (Dipavali)

Temperatures are on the rise but prices remain low, people are looking forward to a big peak season and people on the island have a real spring in their step. With the perfect weather and lack of crowds, November really could be the optimum time to visit Mauritius.

December’s early weeks are superb. The Christmas crowds are yet to build and there's fantastic diving and snorkeling and some fabulous festivals to look forward to. Among these are the three-day Festival Kréol (try and celebrate this on Rodrigues if you can) and the Hindu fire-walking ceremony known as Teemeedee, celebrated by the island's Tamil community. Many hotels also organize lavish Christmas events for guests. Key Events: Festival Kréol, Teemeedee, Christmas

Best time to visit Mauritius: when to go and what to do

Plan ahead if you want to experience the best of the weather on this indian ocean island – and don’t want to miss those vibrant festivals.

is september good time to visit mauritius

A verdant, teardrop-shaped isle off the east coast of Madagascar, volcanic Mauritius rightly tops holidaymaker bucket lists thanks to its pristine beaches, raw mountainous wilds and rainbow culture. Despite easy, direct-flight access from the UK, for many people a visit to this tropical idyll will be a once-in-a-lifetime break — so it pays to time the trip just right. Whether you want to fly and flop when the weather is at its most reliably balmy or are hoping to snag a lower-season deal (ideal for enjoying the island’s many inland activities), read on to discover the best time to touch down.

When is the best time to visit Mauritius?

Many people associate Mauritius with year-round sun, but visitors need to know where to go and when.

The island has its own rather feisty microclimate. It could be dry and sunny somewhere that’s only a few minutes away from a downpour, so you’ll need to be mindful of this and plan activities accordingly. The east coast and central plateau catch the lion’s share of the wet weather, while the more sheltered west coast is much drier.

The Mauritian microclimate produces changeable weather (Getty Images)

In general, the period from June to September is cooler and drier. Then, from November until April, the country goes through its warm and humid summer, which can make conditions testy but not unbearable. Cyclone season officially starts on November 1 and doesn’t end until May 15 the following year.

A good rule of thumb is to aim for the east coast in winter (the Mauritian summer) and the northwest in summer (Mauritian winter).

When is peak season in Mauritius?

The island’s peak season is technically from November until April. While Mauritius has long been a favourite for winter sun, this is also the island’s wet season — we’re talking the middle of Mauritian summer. That said, October to December is popular with tourists for a reason: rain doesn’t stop play for long; downpours tend to fall in short bursts and the sky clears soon after. Resorts will be busiest and most expensive during these months, with some rates doubling over new year.

When is the cheapest time to travel to Mauritius?

For cheaper prices, travel during the northern hemisphere’s summer. July and August , for example, fall into Mauritius’s winter season and is a comparatively cooler time of the year — average temperatures of around 24C — with fewer mosquitoes, lower humidity and relatively little rain. Just stay on the sheltered parts of the island; the island’s north and west coasts will be warmer and much less windy.

Mauritius is especially good for surfing due to its famous trade winds (Getty Images)

When is the best season for surfing in Mauritius and where should I go?

Mauritius is well known for its water sports — everything’s up for grabs, from diving schools to parasailing competitions. But the island’s famous trade winds make it especially good for surfing, and it makes sense to chase them.

In summer, head to the east coast, where the cooling southeast winds make it particularly pleasant, and opt for the north and west coast in winter. There are a few places that are particularly popular with surfers. The jewel in the crown is Tamarin Bay, on the west coast, but it can be inconsistent; sometimes the waves don’t break for months at a time. The experienced should head to One Eye — named for the “eye” that’s allegedly visible in the jagged rock face when surfers ride a perfect wave — over at Le Morne.

Sunshine and rainfall

Mauritius’s year-round sunshine and microclimate doesn’t lend itself to extremes; temperatures generally sit between 17C and 31C. January, February and March are the hottest and wettest months of the year, averaging 30C and 253 mm of rainfall.

Key dates for your calendar

Few things reflect Mauritius’s unique and impressive cultural diversity better than its spectacular religious festivals, many of which are island-wide and welcome visitor participation. Keep in mind that, though safe and friendly, Mauritians are quietly conservative and tourists should dress modestly if joining any of the celebrations. Also, if a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many will take the day in between off, as well as the adjoining weekend — this is called faire le pont (making a bridge).

January/February

One of the most vibrant festivals in Mauritius, the Chinese New Year celebrations are a sight to behold. Signalling the start of the Chinese Spring Festival — as well as three days of food, festivities and parades — a huge fireworks display lights up the sky to ward off evil spirits and is followed, 15 days later, by a beautiful lantern festival. Head to Port Louis for the focus of the action.

The statue of Lord Shiva at Grand Bassin (Alamy)

Maha Shivaratri, the spectacular three-day Hindu pilgrimage at the end of February, is an important occasion on Mauritius. Grand Bassin, watched over by a 33m (108ft) statue of Lord Shiva, is considered a holy lake for Mauritian Hindus — its waters are said to be an offshoot of the spiritually important River Ganges. The festival attracts people from all over the world.

Few celebrations are as instantly recognisable as Holi — the joyful Hindu festival of colours that marks the beginning of spring — and Mauritius goes all in. While water pistols are aimed and brightly coloured powder thrown (be aware that, as with snowballs, everyone is fair game), this is a day, scheduled annually by the lunar calendar, that’s all about strengthening community. On Mauritius, Thimithi — a Tamil Hindu festival also known as “The Walk on Fire” — is celebrated by Hindus and non-Hindus alike during the Tamil calendar month of Aippasi (roughly around November, though this can change). Held in honour of Kali, the Hindu goddess of power, a ten-day meditating and fasting period is brought to a close by devotees ceremonially walking on burnt embers, and is one of the most-watched cultural events on the island. Another Tamil Hindu festival, Thaipoosam Cavadee, which takes place a few months later, is also spectacular; it involves more fire-walking, as well as sword-climbing and piercing rituals.

The Chamarel Waterfalls, Mauritius

When is the best time to visit Mauritius?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit Mauritius is toward the end of the year, from October through to December, when temperatures are hottest. However, Mauritius has an enviable subtropical climate that normally brings sun, warmth, and blue skies, so expect perfect beach weather for most of the year.

The Chamarel Mountains in the south can get rain at any time of year, which provides them with a luxuriant green covering, but the rest of the island generally only sees prolonged rain in January and February, when cyclones roll in from the Indian Ocean.

Visiting Mauritius in December

December is one of the busiest months for visitors to Mauritius; especially over the festive period. Humidity builds throughout the month and it is likely to rain; particularly around Christmas and New Year. However, the rain is normally a heavy shower and helps lower the humidity. Afterwards, the sun usually shines through and it dries up quickly.

Best Time to Visit Mauritius

When is the best time to go to mauritius.

Wondering when to visit Mauritius for the best possible stay?

Although Mauritius can be visited all year round, there are certain aspects to consider depending on the season.

Whether you decide to go to Mauritius to enjoy the beaches , partake in water sports or prefer hiking , it’s important to choose the right time to benefit from the best conditions.

To help you make the most of your stay in Mauritius , I’ve prepared this guide to the different seasons on the island.

I provide details on the climate , the best activities to do , and the pros and cons associated with each time of the year.

After reading this article, you’ll know the best period to visit Mauritius and you can start planning your trip!

So, without further ado, let’s get right into it!

The Climate in Mauritius

Tourist seasons in mauritius, climate and water temperature, the beaches, water sports, scuba diving, visiting mauritius in summer: pros and cons, hiking and nature outings, boat excursion to meet whales, visiting the picturesque villages, winter in mauritius: pros and cons, when to go to mauritius for swimming, when to go to mauritius for hiking, when to visit mauritius on a budget, what is the best month to travel to mauritius, plan your trip to mauritius easily, travel insurance for mauritius: my advice, the seasons in mauritius.

Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate.

In the Indian Ocean, and therefore in Mauritius, there are two major seasons , each lasting six months:

  • the Southern Hemisphere summer , spanning from November to April
  • the Southern Hemisphere winter , from May to October.

Summer and winter in Mauritius are distinguished by a difference in temperature of a few degrees, and by the frequency of rainfall.

In summer , it’s very hot and the atmosphere is humid . Temperatures often exceed 30°C (86°F) and rainfall is quite common (especially between December and March). The sea is warm , up to 28°C (82°F). If you want to enjoy swimming and water activities, this is the ideal season.

In winter, temperatures are milder , varying between 23 and 26°C (73-78°F) depending on the region. This makes it more pleasant for walking and hiking. As for the sea, it is cooler and thus less conducive to swimming (speaking as someone who gets cold easily, but if you don’t mind, it’s still quite pleasant!).

Despite these two distinct seasons, the weather in Mauritius is more or less constant throughout the year. It is generally warm and sunny from January to December, even though there are periods that are rainier than others.

When is the cyclonic season in Mauritius?

Another very important factor to consider when planning your trip is the cyclone season in Mauritius, which lasts from January to March.

This season is characterized by high rainfall and significant cyclone risks . During a cyclone, winds are strong, the sea is rough, and it’s not possible to leave your accommodation for about 3 to 4 days.

During this particular season, there can be several cyclones in a row, spaced a few weeks apart. Their intensity varies from year to year. It’s also possible for no cyclones to hit Mauritius during the season.

My advice is if you want to explore the island, be active, and not end up stuck in your hotel, January to March is a period to avoid.

That’s more or less the rundown on the climate and seasons in Mauritius!

To sum it all up for you, here’s a quick recap of the Mauritius weather by month :

Mauritius weather

Wondering when to visit Mauritius based on tourist crowds ?

As you might expect, you will encounter more visitors in July-August and during the end-of-year holiday season , although there is a steady flow of tourists all year round.

When it comes to accommodation prices , they of course vary depending on the season and this is also a criterion to consider for your upcoming stay.

Know that the period between October and May is considered the high season in Mauritius (which roughly corresponds to the summer period ). This is when prices are at their highest.

The low season ranges from June to September and allows you to benefit from lower hotel rates.

Travelling to Mauritius During the Austral Summer: November to April

From November to April, it’s the summer season in Mauritius. The atmosphere is warm and quite humid.

The average temperature varies between 26°C and 28°C , with peaks above 30°C in the hotter regions like the West.

As for the water temperature , it hovers between 26°C and 28°C in the lagoon.

From November to December, the rain is fairly moderate. It’s between January and April when the precipitations are the most frequent and significant. During this period at the start of the year, there’s also a high risk of cyclones .

If you want to visit Mauritius during the summer , the months of November and December are the most suitable: you avoid the heavy rains and enjoy still bearable temperatures.

The months of January, February, and March are the hottest and rainiest . The atmosphere can be stifling, especially on the West coast and in the North where there is little breeze. Avoid this period if you’re sensitive to high heat and the humid tropical climate.

The Best Activities to Do

In Mauritius’ summer, the best thing to do is to enjoy the warm waters of the ocean !

It’s the ideal season to discover the full potential of the most beautiful Mauritian beaches , with their white sand and turquoise sea.

Indulge in swimming in the crystal-clear water at 28°C , and sunbathing on the fine sand in a paradisiacal setting! (But beware, the sun is strong so don’t expose yourself without sun protection ).

To not miss any of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius, I invite you to read my complete article on the subject: Top 11 Dream Beaches to See in Mauritius

During the austral summer, you can also try various water sports offered in Mauritius such as:

  • kitesurfing, the must-do sport in the Southwest of Mauritius
  • s eabobbing , for snorkeling in the lagoon like a dolphin!
  • towed tubing

Visiting Mauritius in the summer is also the ideal time to go scuba diving! The waters are warm, making them extremely comfortable for exploring the seabed populated with multicolored fish.

If you want to try scuba diving under the best conditions, this is the perfect season and country for your first scuba diving experience.

Several centers and clubs all around the island offer beginner scuba diving sessions for both children and adults.

Another activity idea if you decide to visit Mauritius between November and April: boat excursions !

It’s obviously one of the must-do activities on the island during the summer. If I had to recommend just one, it would be the full-day catamaran cruise that takes you to discover the 3 northern islets .

You can already book your spot by directly clicking the button below:

Among the best boat trips in Mauritius , I also recommend:

  • The cruise to Île aux Cerfs departing from Trou d’Eau Douce ( click here for details and booking )
  • The boat trip to Île aux Bénitiers, with an onboard barbecue lunch ( to book, click here )
  • The speed boat outing in Blue Bay’s lagoon , with snorkeling breaks and stops on several islands! To book your spot without delay, click here .

Easily organize your summer vacation in Mauritius by selecting from my list of the best activities and boat trips , which I detail for you in these articles:

  • The best activities to do in Mauritius
  • The boat excursions not to miss in Mauritius
  • Visit Île aux Bénitiers

The main advantage of visiting Mauritius in November, December, January, February, or March is certainly the delightfully warm water temperatures.

Those who love the heat and wish to swim will appreciate this season where the waters are warm, making swimming and diving all the more comfortable.

During summer in Mauritius, another advantage is that everything is open : the water sports agencies and the sea cruises.

(Except during cyclone periods , of course, when everything is closed until the storm passes. As I mentioned, if you don’t want to risk being stuck indoors for several days, it’s better to avoid Mauritius between January and March.)

Among the main disadvantages of visiting Mauritius in summer, the hot and humid atmosphere can make nature walks challenging. Between the oppressive heat, mosquitoes, and rains that make the trails slippery, it’s not the best time if you want to go hiking in Mauritius.

You should also be aware that in summer, the accommodation prices are higher than the rest of the year and they get booked up quickly . If you plan to visit Mauritius during the southern summer, I recommend that you book your accommodations as far in advance as possible .

To save you some time, I’ve selected the best accommodations on the island, detailed in these articles:

  • Where to Stay in Mauritius? – The best accommodations by region and for all budgets

  • 5-Star Hotels in Mauritius – My Top 12
  • The Best Luxury Hotels in Mauritius – The 11 most prestigious properties on the island
  • All-Inclusive Hotels in Mauritius – The best hotels for an all-inclusive stay

Visiting Mauritius in Winter: May to October

In winter in Mauritius, the temperatures are milder and the weather is sunny . The thermometer reads between 22 and 26°C depending on the region, and the atmosphere is much drier than in the height of summer.

From May onwards, there is a noticeable decrease in rainfall . The months of September and October are the driest .

The months of July and August are the coolest of the year, with temperatures fluctuating between 22 and 24°C. In the evenings, it’s nice to have a light sweater or cardigan!

The sea temperature starts to cool down towards the end of April. From an average of 28°C, it drops to 26-27°C in May-June and down to 24°C from July to October. Which is still very pleasant for swimming!

Visiting Mauritius between May and October ensures you enjoy pleasant temperatures, little rainfall, and no excessive heat.

Best Activities to Do

Mauritius is well-known for its beaches but is also an unmissable nature destination . Its tropical forests , wild gorges , and waterfalls are just a few of the wonders to discover during your stay.

The southern winter is indeed the perfect season for hiking and nature walks.

Among the most beautiful hikes to do in Mauritius I recommend:

  • The Ascent of Morne Brabant
  • The 7 Waterfalls Tour (also known as the Tamarin Falls )
  • The Climb to the Island’s Highest Peak: Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire

Mauritius also boasts a number of nature reserves worth exploring through guided tours or leisurely walks:

  • Ebony Forest Reserve and its ebony wood forest, located in Chamarel
  • Vallée de Ferney , a gorgeous green reserve near Mahébourg
  • Bel Ombre Reserve, which you can explore on foot or by buggy
  • Black River Gorges National Park , the country’s largest nature reserve

Black River Gorges National Park

From May to September, it’s the whale-watching season in Mauritius.

During these months, migratory humpback whales gather in the warm waters around the lagoon to breed and give birth before setting off again.

If your trip to Mauritius is scheduled during this period, take the chance to observe these impressive marine mammals on a dedicated boat excursion!

It’s important, of course, to choose a provider who is respectful of these animals , allowing you to observe them without causing disturbance.

The team at Dolswim does just that, offering this speedboat excursion to meet dolphins, whales, and sperm whales starting from Rivière Noire:

humpback whale

Another activity to enjoy during a winter stay in Mauritius is visiting towns and villages.

During this season, you will avoid the intense heat and have much more pleasant visits than in the high summer. For example, it is the perfect season to explore Port-Louis , the capital.

What’s great about this type of visit in Mauritius are the guided “ food tours ” that allow you to discover the picturesque spots of each town while tasting the best local specialties .

Click on one of the links below to book your culinary guided tour in Grand Baie, Port-Louis, or Mahébourg:

  • Grand Bay Food Tour , the lively coastal city in the North
  • Port Louis Guided Tour , the capital, with a tasting of Mauritian specialties
  • Mahébourg Food Tour , the very first village built on the island

Below, I have provided the links to my articles dedicated to the main cities and villages of Mauritius, to make organizing your visits easier:

  • Visiting Port Louis (Mauritius’ capital) – The Ultimate Guide
  • What to Do in Grand Bay?
  • What to Do in Mahébourg?
  • What to Do in Flic-en-Flac?
  • What to Do in Chamarel?
  • What to Do in Morne Brabant?
  • What to Do in Bellemare?

Caudan Waterfront Port Louis

Of course, between May and October, you’ll also have the pleasure of enjoying the paradisiacal beaches of Mauritius .

It will even be more pleasant than in summer for those who do not like the intense heat. You also avoid the heavy rains and will have a dryer weather .

However, the water is cooler during this season, so those who are sensitive to cold (like me!) might enjoy swimming a little less.

Among the most beautiful beaches to see in Mauritius during your stay, do not miss:

  • Cap Malheureux
  • Trou aux Biches
  • Mont Choisy
  • Pointe d’Esny
  • and many others!

White sand beach Mauritius

Visiting Mauritius between May and October offers the advantage of enjoying ideal weather.

The heat is quite bearable and you avoid the very rainy periods, allowing you to walk and hike in the best conditions.

During this season you also avoid the risk of cyclones.

Personally, I love Mauritius in June and October . Not only are the temperatures mild , but there’s also fewer tourists than the rest of the year. If you want to avoid the crowds , these are the two months to choose for your stay.

Mauritius in July and August is also very pleasant in terms of weather (these are sunny and dry months). But, as you may guess, the beaches and tourist spots are quite crowded.

Another advantage of visiting Mauritius in winter is the savings made on accommodation budget , since lodging prices are lower than in the high summer season.

As for the disadvantages of winter in Mauritius, the main one is that, if you want to swim, you might find the sea a bit cool .

In my opinion, November and December are the best months for swimming in Mauritius.

The lagoon waters are deliciously warm and there’s no cyclonic weather yet that could make the sea rough.

Between May and October , you can also enjoy swimming but in slightly cooler waters.

If you want to swim and do some watersports during your stay in Mauritius, avoid the period between January and March.

And if you want to go scuba diving in Mauritius , the recommended time is from September to April .

Hiking enthusiasts should travel to Mauritius between the months of May and October to benefit from the ideal climate: mild temperatures and dry weather .

Hiking is a must-do activity in Mauritius to discover its tropical forest, waterfalls, and mountain areas rich in biodiversity.

If you want to enjoy less crowded trails, I recommend avoiding the peak tourist season and favoring the months of May-June or October .

Among the best hiking spots in Mauritius , I recommend:

  • Black River Gorges National Park
  • Morne Brabant
  • Tamarin Falls (the 7 Cascades route)
  • Mount Pouce
  • Ebony Forest Reserve
  • not to forget Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, the highest peak of the island!

7 cascades Tamarin

Wondering what’s the cheapest time to go to Mauritius?

In Mauritius, accommodation prices are lower during the off-peak season, which is between May and October .

If you’re looking to save money during your trip to Mauritius, I recommend traveling in April-May-June or September-October .

It’s best to avoid the July-August period and the Christmas – New Year period, when the prices of hotels, flights, and activities tend to rise.

Considering:

  • the climate
  • the prices of accommodations/activities/flights
  • tourist traffic,

the best time to go to Mauritius is during the months of June and October .

More broadly, you can also aim for the period from late April to early November .

Many travelers mistakenly think that healthcare in Mauritius is affordable and that they don’t need travel insurance. However, in reality, the public healthcare system is fragile and  even the slightest consultation in a private clinic can be very expensive !

That’s why it is  essential to take out  travel insurance with good medical coverage before you go.

To ensure your safety while traveling , I recommend the following 2 insurance options ( both include epidemic coverage  – like Covid-19 – which is very important!)

Signing up is very simple; just  click on the links below :

Delightful Mauritius

Delightful Mauritius

Stay in four different areas on this trip - first the South Coast, then the West Coast, then Chamarel in the center of the island, before spending the last few days relaxing on the beach of the popular North Coast. Mauritius has so much more to offer than just gorgeous beaches!

The island has two seasons : a hot, wet and humid summer (October to April), with a slight risk of cyclones from January to March, and a warm, dry winter (May to September). Average temperatures range from around 25°C in summer to 20°C in winter. Average annual rainfall is 2010mm, most of which falls in summer.

As Mauritius is best known for winter sun, the peak season for tourism is from October to April and low season runs from May to September. Rodrigues’ peak tourist seasons are from the end of November to February, around Easter in April and from the end of June to August; outside of these times beach restaurants are often closed and only a few tables d’hôtes are open. The cooler, drier months from June to September, with fewer mosquitos, are good for outdoor activities; clear, calm and warm waters from November to April are ideal for diving; the best deep-sea fishing is from October to April; and surfing conditions are at their best from June to August.

Note that the west and north coasts are warmer and drier than the east and south coasts. In the summer, the cooling southeast trade winds make the east coast pleasant and perfect for watersports, but the south and east can be chilly and windy in winter. The north and west coasts are more sheltered in winter, meanwhile, but can get stiflingly hot and humid in summer. Most rain falls in the highlands, with Curepipe the rainiest of the inland towns.

Mauritius is a multicultural society, with religious festivals for the different groups held year-round. Dates vary annually depending on religious calendars. Visitors are welcome to attend any of the major public festivals, and it may be worth timing a visit to coincide with one of the more spectacular ones listed below.

Thaipoosam Cavadee

January/February. Island-wide. Tamil penitents parade through the capital with their tongues, chests and cheeks pierced with needles in this devout and spectacular Tamil festival.

Chinese New Year/Spring Festival

February. Port Louis. Chinese dragons and lion dances grace Port Louis’ Chinatown when the Chinese–Mauritian community exchange traditional wax cakes, light firecrackers to chase away evil spirits and spread red, a symbol of happiness, everywhere.

Maha Shivaratree

February/March. Grand Bassin. The biggest Hindu festival outside India, devotees make a pilgrimage to the island’s sacred lake to leave offerings to Shiva.

March. Grand Bassin and island-wide. People splash each other with coloured water, throw lurid coloured powder and wish each other luck in the Hindu festival of joy.

May/June. Island-wide. A low-key celebration of the Hindu New Year by the Telugu community with prayers and rituals for Brahma, creator of the universe.

Corpus Christi

August/September. Port Louis. Devout Roman Catholics parade through the streets.

Ganesh Chaturthi

August/September. Baie du Cap, Grand Bassin. Mauritian Hindus take their statues of Ganesh, the God of Wisdom, for a birthday outing, dunking them in the sea or the sacred lake.

Pere Laval Day

9 September. Sainte Croix, Port Louis. Mauritians of all faiths make a pilgrimage to Catholic apostle Pere Laval’s tomb on the anniversary of his death to pray for miracles at his graveside.

23 October. Island-wide. The annual Festival of Light celebrates the triumph of good over evil: fairy lights and candlelight guide good fortune to Mauritian Hindus’ homes and sweet cakes are offered to the ancestors.

6 November. Plaine Verte, Port Louis. Muslims carry brightly lit lanterns or “ghoons” made of bamboo and paper to mourn the martyrdom of the prophet Mohammed’s nephew in Kerbala, Iraq.

Ganga Asnan

November. Island-wide. Hindus bathe at public beaches and offer prayers, fruits and flowers to Ganga, the goddess of purity, during this auspicious month.

Festival Kreol

28 November–1 December. Le Morne Village. This annual celebration of Creole culture held in Le Morne Village features food and craft stalls, traditional songs and séga dancing (festivalkreol.co.uk).

Eid-ul-Fitr

November/December. Mosques island, wide. The end of Ramadan and fasting for the island’s Muslims is celebrated with prayers and feasting with friends and relatives.

December–February. Temples island-wide. After ten days of purification and praying, Tamil penitents walk across a pit of burning coals in certain temples across the island, before cooling their feet in milk.

In a Nutshell: The best time to visit Mauritius is from May to September, offering more comfortable temperatures and ideal conditions for water sports like windsurfing and kite surfing.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • May to September in Mauritius is the best period for pleasant weather and ideal conditions for water sports.
  • Winter months (May to October) provide a bearable climate with sunny days, suitable for outdoor activities.
  • The ocean temperature in winter, around 71°F to 75°F (22°C to 24°C), is ideal for water sports requiring wetsuits, like surfing and kite surfing.

The Best Time of Year to Go To Mauritius

Mauritius, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, offers different experiences throughout the year.

Lucy Leheilleix , an avid traveler and water sports enthusiast, shares her insights on the best time to visit this island paradise.

Understanding Mauritius’ Seasons for an Ideal Visit

Rainy Season (November to April) : This period is marked by significant rainfall, especially from January to April. Leheilleix notes, “If you’re visiting Mauritius from November to April, expect more rain than in other months.” The summer months, particularly from December to February, also coincide with the cyclone season, potentially bringing torrential rain and cyclones.

The Summer Heat : Summer in Mauritius, extending from November to April, experiences extreme heat with temperatures ranging from 82°F (28°C) to 97°F (36°C). The humidity, often around 80%, makes the heat feel more intense. “It’s really hot, and the humidity makes you feel so uncomfortable,” Leheilleix comments.

Winter Months (May to October) : Leheilleix’s favorite time in Mauritius is the winter season. “The temperature is much more bearable, and you can still enjoy sunny days,” she says. During these months, the ocean temperature drops slightly, making water sports like surfing, kite surfing, and wing foiling more enjoyable.

Optimal Time for Water Sports : For enthusiasts of windsurfing, kite surfing, or wind foiling, Leheilleix recommends visiting in the winter months, particularly from June to September. “That’s when you get the wind, and honestly, places like Le Morne are among the best in the world for these sports,” she adds.

Regional Weather Variations : Mauritius has regional weather variations, with the center of the island (Moka, Floreal, Curepipe region) being the coolest and the west coast (Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin region) being the hottest and driest.

Conclusion: Planning Your Mauritian Getaway

In summary, the best time to visit Mauritius , according to Leheilleix, is from May to September. This period offers comfortable temperatures, favorable conditions for water sports, and less likelihood of rain and cyclones.

While the summer months can be hot and humid, they still offer enjoyable experiences, with the cooler regions providing respite.

Whether you’re seeking relaxation on the beach or adrenaline-pumping water activities, choosing the right time to visit Mauritius can significantly enhance your experience on this enchanting island.

Plant a Love Tree & Leave a Legacy

Explore the natural beauty of inland Mauritius, which combines the wonders of the Chamarel Coloured Earths and the majestic Ebony Forest, while contributing to the conservation of this delicate habitat. A fascinating natural phenomenon, the seven distinct colours of sand at Chamarel are a sight to behold as is the nearby waterfall plunging 100 metres down into the Black River Gorge – both perfect spots for some holiday snaps before heading into the reserve with your conservationist guide. Buckle up as you explore the Ebony Forest together on a jeep safari and discover the work being done to create a sanctuary for the island’s rich biodiversity. Walk along the raised walkways in the forest’s canopy, look out for Fruit Bats hanging in the trees and spot Pic Pic birds gliding above the foliage. At Sublime Point, with breath taking views across Le Morne, put pen to paper and write your own love note to be placed under the native tree you’ll shortly be planting. Not only will you be contributing to the ongoing conservation of the forest, you can return in years to come to see how it’s grown.

• Duration: half day • Morning departure • Monday to Saturday departures • Operates year round • Private experience

Good to know This is a beautiful experience for honeymooners, anniversary couples or a special proposal.

Mauritian Wildlife Experience supported by the Der Touristik Foundation

Experience conservation in action as you explore the Ile Aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve run by the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation on this insightful guided eco tour. Having previously been devastated by tree logging and the introduction of non-native animal and plant species, the foundation’s intense conservation efforts have resulted in the restoration of the forest and species that had long since disappeared from the island. After a short boat trip from the mainland across Mahebourg Bay, your private ranger will guide you along the reserve’s trails introducing you to the distinctive flora and fauna, pointing out rare species such as the Pink Pigeon and Giant Aldabra Tortoise as you go. Before leaving, head to the islands famed Rault Biscuit Factory where cassava biscuits have been produced for over a century and tuck into an authentic Mauritian lunch at a local restaurant.

• £10 of each excursion sale goes towards the Der Touristik Foundation • Duration: half day • Morning departure • Monday to Saturday departures (excluding Wednesday) • Operates year round • Private experience

Good to know Although a gentle route suitable for children, we recommend packing a good pair of walking shoes and some bug repellent for the trail.

Pamplemousses Gardens & Mauritian Cooking Class

Created by French botanist Pierre Poivre back in 1767 and dotted with trees planted by the likes of Indira Gandhi, Princess Margaret and Robert Mugabe, the history of these world-famous gardens is as impressive as the 500 different species of plants. Officially the oldest botanical garden in the southern hemisphere, weave your way through the diverse flora and fauna with your knowledgeable guide and discover how nutmeg and cloves made their way into Mauritian cuisine, marvelling at the giant Victoria Regina waterlilies as you go. Another ingredient that’s had a profound impression on the history and identity of Mauritius, you’ll make a quick stop at nearby L’Aventure du Sucre, a former sugar mill turned museum, before meeting with a local family to sample some Creole-style home cooking. Preparing lunch together, you’ll learn some of the chefs best kept culinary secrets before sharing the feast with the family and exchanging tales.

Good to know An intimate and fascinating trip for both couples and families - the deer and tortoises in the botanical gardens are sure to delight the little ones.

Mauritian Street Food

Put on your walking shoes as you leisurely taste your way through more than two and a half centuries of history in the island’s capital, Port Louis, on this enlightening walking tour. Immigration has shaped much of Mauritius, so the UNESCO listed Aapravasi Ghat, where almost half a million Indian immigrants arrived to work in the sugar plantations, is a fitting place to begin. As you gently stroll along the waterfront and into the historical centre your experienced guide will help you discover some of the oldest buildings, from the Postal Museum to the Port Louis Theatre all the while filling your imagination with stories of this colourful capital’s past. As you reach the Central Market with a deeper understanding of the rich diversity of Mauritius, tuck into local delicacies from fritters and roti to dumplings, curries and noodles and wash them down with the local speciality Alouda – an ice-cold milk drink served with agar-agar and psyllium grains. Discover even more culinary treasures as you make your way to Chinatown where generations of Chinese immigrants have traded before exploring the boutique shops and craft markets at the Cauden Waterfront.

Good to know While every effort is made to accommodate any dietary requirements, please discuss with your guide before booking.

Mauritius Your Way (Private Driver/ Guide)

Whether you know exactly where you want to go or you’re looking for some direction, there’s no better way to explore the island than with a personal guide and chauffeur who can share their expansive knowledge and experience with you. From hidden dining spots you’d otherwise miss to insights about the local culture, spend the day discovering the sights at your own pace and relish in the freedom to change course at a whim. A fantastic option for those travelling with children or those looking to delve deeper into the Mauritian spirit.

• Duration: full day • Morning departure • Monday to Saturday departures • Operates year round • Private experience

Good to know You’ll benefit from a personal car with driver and local guide for the entire day but please be aware fees to any attractions you decide to visit will be payable locally.

Sunset Beach Horse Riding

Spend a memorable evening horse riding along a beach in Mauritius, enjoying the soothing sound of gentle waves as the sun melts away, accompanied by an experienced and trained guide. Wade into the cool water with your horse, canter along the stunning white sand and soak up the majestic sea views as the sun sets into the ocean. After your ride, enjoy a cheese and wine session to round off an idyllic evening. Don’t forget your camera!

• Duration: 1-hour ride • Evening departure • Daily departures • Operates year round • Private experience

Good to know Suitable for both novice and experienced riders, the trek will be tailored to your abilities and led by an experienced guide.

Dolphin And Whales Encounter

Catching your first glimpse of a dolphin racing beside your boat or spotting a giant humpback whale breaching on the ocean’s surface are moments that will stay with you forever. As you head out along the west coast, your experienced crew will begin briefing you on the types of dolphins and whales you can hope to spot and most importantly how to view these magnificent mammals in a sustainable and responsible manner. It won’t be long before you’re an expert at identifying the two types of dolphins found here – Bottlenose and Spinners – as you watch them play in their natural habitat. Best time to visit Mauritius

This Indian Ocean island is located in the tropics in the Southern Hemisphere. As well as a tropical climate (leading to year-round warm temperatures and a distinct wet and dry season), its seasons are largely the opposite of our own, although there are only two distinct seasons. Summer runs from November to April and winter from May to October. The higher temperatures of summer coincide with the region’s rainy season while the cooler months tend to be drier. As Mauritius is a small island in such a far-flung location, it is often hard to forecast the weather, particularly in the long term. The topography also causes a number of microclimates – it could be beautifully sunny where you are but raining up the road. Here’s our month-by-month guide to Mauritius’s weather and climate.

Mauritius Weather

Apr - may, sep - oct, mauritius weather by month.

Mauritius in January January is one of the warmest months in Mauritius and with that, it is often one of the wettest. Although it is relatively rare, the island can be affected by cyclones. Saying that, the summer is a great time to visit if you are seeking an escape from the colder weather at home. Mornings tend to start off sunny allowing you to enjoy the beautiful beaches and warm sea temperatures. Localised rain and thunderstorms tend to build up in the afternoon creating the perfect time to make use of your resort’s spa or other indoor facilities.

Mauritius in February Similar to January, the weather in Mauritius in February is warm and often rainy. However, as is often the case in tropical countries, the rain is usually short lived, lasting no more than a couple of hours. While it is possible to dive at any point during the year in Mauritius, it is the summer months that are the most popular. The warm water draws the vibrant marine wildlife to the reefs and coral gardens that surround the island.

Mauritius in March The average temperature remains the same as it is in January and February, at a very pleasant 30 degrees Celsius. Rainfall amounts are still relatively high but again, the heavy showers are usually short and sharp. The Hindu festival of Holi takes place in March and it is widely celebrated in Mauritius. People take to the streets during the second day of the festival and they are covered with vibrantly coloured powder.

Mauritius in April April in Mauritius marks the end of the summer and a reduction in the amount of precipitation. This is particularly the case towards the end of the month. It is a great time to spend on the beach and in the sea as the water has been warmed over the summer. There may still be heavy showers throughout the month, however these are fewer and further between and the humidity levels are starting to fall as the dry season approaches.

Mauritius in May Although officially the start of winter, it’s not quite winter as we know it! Daytime temperatures hover around the mid-20s while at night they can drop to 18 degrees Celsius so you may need a light long-sleeved top for the evenings. The days are largely sunny and the sea remains relatively warm, particularly off the north of the island.

Mauritius in June Throughout June, the Mauritius climate starts to cool and the south east trade winds start to increase in strength. The winter is perhaps not the best time for a stay on the island’s east or south coasts as these are most affected regions. However, many of the resorts on the east coast have been designed with the wind in mind with plenty of sheltered spots to enjoy the largely sunny days. During June you can make the most of some great-value offers

Mauritius in July Although the temperatures are not cold when compared with a European winter, if you want to catch the best of the weather, you should head to the north of the island during the winter months. July is one of the coolest months of the year – don’t be surprised if you see islanders wearing a coat but remember, everything is relative!

Mauritius in August While it is officially the dry season, the island is sometimes affected by anti-cyclones between June and September. These weather systems can bring cooler temperatures, heavy rains and increased wind and they last for just a couple of days. Strong winds are still affecting the east coast during August, however the resorts on the north west coast are popular for family holidays during the school break.

Mauritius in September The temperature starts to increase again in September as do the hours of sunshine making September a good time to visit Mauritius. Together with October and November, this month is one of the driest. The weather favours the west and north coasts still, especially during the first half of the month.

Mauritius in October When asked what the best time to visit Mauritius is, locals will probably say October. Both land and sea temperatures continue to rise and the climate is largely dry. This warm and dry period coincides with the half term break making the island a fantastic time setting for a family holiday.

Mauritius in November An increased number of sunshine hours and beautifully warm temperatures characterise the Mauritius weather in November. As summer approaches the humidity increases, as does the amount of rainfall, particularly towards the end of the month. What you can be sure of is a lovely warm break from the cooling temperatures at home.

Mauritius in December December marks the beginning of summer and the wet season. Humidity levels and rainfall amounts increase. The draw of a tropical Christmas and New Year is always a strong one making this one of the busiest periods on the island. We recommend booking your holiday in good time to avoid disappointment.

3 must-visit travel destinations for summer 2024.

Beautiful woman tans on sandbank surrounded by turquoise ocean from above

Summer 2024 has the potential to be the busiest travel season of all time.

In the first quarter of this year, global tourism reached 97% of pre-pandemic levels. Some 285 million people traveled internationally between January and March, which is a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Indicators suggest that a high number of Americans in particular will travel in the next few months. Between October 2022 and September 2023, the State Department issued 24 million passport books and cards —the highest number in U.S. history.

TSA projects to screen record numbers of travelers this summer and is already seeing unusually high traffic. While it has historically been busiest on major holidays, it recorded one of its busiest days of all time ( with 2.8 million travelers ) on May 17.

With all of this global travel on the horizon, where should tourists travel in the summer of 2024?

My advice is to avoid Europe’s tourist hotspots—particularly the destinations where locals are actively opposing more visitors. Instead, head to one of the three destinations I recommend for unique and compelling travel experiences.

Paros, Greece

Greek village of Naousa, Paros island, Greece

Netflix’s New #1 Movie Is An Overlooked, Must-Watch Crime Comedy Thriller

Reacher season 3 casts a villain that looks like he ate reacher, the 79 best memorial day sales according to our deals editors.

With thousands of islands, jaw-dropping views, and sparkling Mediterranean waters, Greece is a perennially popular tourism destination.

It receives 31.3 million tourists annually, making it the 13th most visited country in the world. Its popularity shows no signs of waning, and if last year’s travel trends are any indication, Greece is set to be busy again this summer.

Last summer, Greece’s most popular areas were, by most accounts, overcrowded. The Acropolis was slammed by so many visitors that officials had to cap the number of daily visitors at 20,000 . Massive queues for photo ops formed at iconic spots on Mykonos and Santorini.

Instead of battling the crowds, those after a dose of Greek island inspired relaxation should seek out Paros, a low-key alternative to Mykonos and Santorini.

It’s a Cycladic island, just like its two more famous counterparts, so the appeal is much the same. It features whitewashed buildings draped in bougainvillea and beautiful Aegean Sea beaches, as well as an appealing assortment of restaurants, hotels, and places to shop.

Exploring by boat, visiting Antiparos (its tiny sister island) for serene, unspoiled beaches, indulging in local seafood dishes, and visiting ancient ruins are some of the best things to do here.

While Paros is right now a more tranquil alternative to Greece’s over-touristed islands, its star is rising. It’s named among Condé Nast Traveller’s “The 24 Best Places to Go in 2024,” and A-listers like Tom Hanks and Jeff Bezos have been spotted on Paros and in its waters.

New luxury hotels like Cove Paros and Avant Mar have recently opened, and it’s easier to reach than ever before, with new airlines (Saudia, Etihad Airways, British Airways, and more) now serving the Cyclades.

People enjoying riding horses riding on tropical sand beach facing the lagoon, aerial view, Indian ... [+] Ocean, Mauritius Island

For powder-white beaches, inviting blue waters, luxury resorts, and a dynamic cultural scene, there are few better places to visit than Mauritius.

Mark Twain described this island country’s beauty best when he said, “Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius.”

Mauritius is part of the Mascarenes, a group of islands that float in the Indian Ocean about 1,000 miles off the coast of southeastern Africa. Its remoteness plus its astounding natural beauty made it a haunt for jetsetters in the 1980s.

Today, a new wave of hospitality has arrived. New luxury resorts are opening, and existing ones are being restored. It made Tripadvisor’s “Best of the Best Destinations” for 2024. I predict this island’s popularity will take off soon.

Mauritius is a paradise for watersport enthusiasts, with opportunities for world-class boating, kitesurfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. On land, there are forests, waterfalls, national parks, and exotic flora and fauna.

Mauritius is also culturally fascinating. At various times across its history, the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and British have settled the island. Slavery brought people from East Africa, and workers were imported from India, China, and other places.

Today, the island is ethnically, linguistically, and religiously diverse. It’s the only African country where Hinduism is the most practiced religion. It has no official language; instead, its people flit between Mauritian Creole, French, and English as needed.

Mauritian cuisine is widely celebrated and reflects the ethnic diversity of its population. Dishes combine Indian, Creole, French, Chinese, African, and Persian influences.

Visitors can take in Mauritius’ history and culture at the Intercontinental Slavery Museum, which chronicles the country’s slave trade, and the House of Digital Art, which features art installations and immersive experiences.

Fishermen on stilts at the sunset, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, another island country floating in the Indian Ocean, is a land of verdant highlands and stunning beaches. Its appeal is a blend of surf and wellness cultures, similar to Bali before its boom in popularity and resulting over-tourism.

Centers of yoga, reiki, breathwork, and other well-being practices have sprung up around the island in recent years. Some of these centers, like Kalukanda House and Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, combine wellness concepts with luxury-level amenities and accommodations.

Sri Lanka is a place for nature lovers, home to 22 national parks. Its mountains and thick, subtropical jungles support a wide variety of plant and animal species. Visitors catch glimpses of elephants, otters, sloth bears, and elusive leopards on safari.

The Pekoe Trail, a 186-mile path that was completed in 2023, takes trekkers through the Central Highlands, including local villages, tea plantations, and holy shrines. You can also explore Sri Lanka by train, traveling easy while taking in scenic views and enjoying a unique cultural experience.

In the lowlands and along its coastlines, Sri Lanka serves up soft-sand beaches with frothy, surfable waves. There are beach towns with trendy hotels and cocktail bars, as well as quiet strips of untouched sand.

Mirissa Beach, known for its calm, crystal-clear waters and rock formations, shows up among Tripadvisor’s “Best of the Best Beaches” for 2024.

Unlike some of the world’s most popular tourist destinations (particularly in Europe), Sri Lanka actually wants more visitors right now. Its tourism authority is investing in marketing campaigns to attract more people, while anti-tourism protests heat up in the Canary Islands, Venice, and Amsterdam, among other places.

Sri Lanka is still recovering from a bombing event, the pandemic, severe economic crisis, and other recent incidents. Tourism is a major source of income for the country, and visiting the country can help put cash into the locals’ hands.

With all that Sri Lanka has to offer, combined with its tourism authority’s marketing efforts and the proliferation of wellness and luxury hotels, I see Sri Lanka growing in popularity this summer and beyond.

It made Travel + Leisure’s list of “The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2024” and its south and central regions show up on Condé Nast Traveller’s “The 24 Best Places to Go in 2024.”

8 Reasons Why September Is The Best Time To Visit Montana

Montana is a nature lover's dream. Check out the top eight reasons why September is the best time to visit Montana.

Sarah Rand • May 22, 2024

is september good time to visit mauritius

Montana is a naturally beautiful destination within the United States. The western state has been popularized by its ample amount of natural beauty. Montana even has many nature preserves that travelers visit from near and far. The state has also been made famous by some on-screen features showcasing its beauty. Many accommodations in Montana have breathtaking views so travelers should worry less about where they stay in Montana, but when they stay. Not every month of the year is created equal in the state. The best time to visit Montana is during September. This month is technically not the most popular time to visit Montana but it has plenty of perks and is truly underrated. Learn more about the top eight reasons that travelers should visit during September.

Average Temperature This Time of Year

  • 70-80 Degrees F

The weather in Montana in September is enjoyable for visitors. The transition from summer to fall means that travelers should expect the beginning of the day to be cooler. The afternoons in Montana during this month are often sunny and warm. There is a bit of a difference from day to day but, generally, the weather is considered mild. Travelers can enjoy the slightly cooler fall temperatures and warmth from summer while also avoiding wet conditions. September is during the dry season yet it is also possible that an early snowfall hits during the month.

Travel Tip :

  • Travelers opt to move to Montana to immerse themselves in the thriving nature of the state. There is plenty for travelers to do to fully enjoy the weather in Montana during September even if they are just visiting.

Perks of Shoulder Season

The shoulder season is a great opportunity for travelers to have a more intimate experience of this destination. Since September is during the shoulder season it is one of the best times to visit Montana. As a result, travelers can experience fewer crowds. This is a benefit as travelers visit the state often during the high season which is usually not as pleasant and overcrowded. Montana can even see almost 2.5 million visitors per month in the summertime, so visiting during a lesser-known travel sweet spot allows travelers to be much more comfortable.

  • Since the shoulder season begins in September, the month is also when travelers can avoid crowds. However, overall, there is more solitude in general even if a traveler’s accommodations are not remote.

Experience the Stunning Landscape

One of the best parts of visiting Montana in September is the landscape. Travelers often note that visitors get the best of both seasons during this month. There is flourishing nature soaking up the waning summer sun and often a trickle of snow during September. While this snow is most likely to occur on the western side of Montana, it is still quite possible that travelers will see snowfall in September. This snow, paired with the warm fall colors, is certain to provide a stunning backdrop.

  • One of the best ways to experience the autumnal beauty of Montana in September is by biking through the trails and country areas.

National Parks

The national parks of Montana are considered the best in the country for some travelers. With nine National Park Service areas and five Montana National Parks, this state has been established as a hub for natural beauty. Yellowstone National Park is one of the largest national parks in the United States and is partially located in Montana. September is a great time to visit since the parks are more enjoyable without overwhelming crowds. During September, visitation rates in the park are lower. The reduced number of visitors means that travelers can take their time to enjoy popular features like Old Faithful at Yellowstone.

  Travel Tip :

  • Glacier National Park is the number one park in Montana. Travelers should plan ahead and get to the park early when they visit. It is also important to plan meals around this park visit since there is not much food available there.

Lower Prices

September is a month when travelers will notice lower prices throughout Montana. The fall season typically has lower prices since it’s not a high tourism season. Since most tourists have gone home by the time September starts the prices begin to drop and settle. This is partially why even locals enjoy the off-season since price spikes cease during the fall month. September is when travelers can enjoy off-season rates too. Travelers are likely to snag discounts in the months that are typically overlooked by tourists.

  • If travelers book in the winter or summer before their visit, there are typically more accommodation options and lower rates.

Hiking is another popular activity for tourists visiting Montana. In September, travelers can appreciate the sun which is not at its peak. The lack of hot weather may help some hikers manage the treks across Montana’s mountains. September is also during the peak hiking season. During this time travelers will notice there is not excessive snow on the ground and trails are clear. If travelers are going on extensive hikes they will enjoy the cooler evenings that are perfect for relief after an active day.

  • Travelers should wear lightweight hiking boots and wool or synthetic hiking socks while exploring the terrain of Montana.

There are plenty of travelers who come to Montana just to camp. Since Montana has such stunning scenery and a flourishing natural environment it is a popular place for camping out. Travelers can camp in state parks and various remote areas of Montana. Securing a campsite is an important part of enjoying a camping experience in Montana. Travelers can also use the amenities of a park while they camp. Things like showers, toilets, and more are available when they reserve their spots. While the national parks usually steal the show, travelers would be wise to camp at state parks if they plan their trip a little late or want to experience more seclusion.

is september good time to visit mauritius

  • Fall is a tranquil time to camp in Montana. September even falls on the elk rutting season in Montana so travelers can experience wildlife sightings.

Of course, fishing is a great family activity for the outdoors so travelers visiting in groups typically enjoy fishing in Montana. The warm days and dry weather make September the best time to visit Montana for fishing. This is especially true for travelers who want to engage in dry fly fishing, steamer fishing, and nymph fishing. Getting a late start (in the day) is better if travelers are fishing in September so the Blue Winged Olives (or BWOs) have already hatched. For fly fishing, this is incredibly important.

is september good time to visit mauritius

  • Travelers should visit Montana for fishing later in the month since the tail end of September has longer and cooler nights, which are better conditions for fishing.

Travelers would be wise to visit Montana during September. There are many joys that come along with the best time to visit Montana, which nature lovers will appreciate. Beyond these reasons, there is still plenty more for travelers to enjoy and discover in the great outdoors.

Best Time to Visit

Mauritius enjoys a relatively mild climate. Although temperatures are rather moderate throughout the year with occasional rainfall, the most pleasant times to visit the island are between the months of April and June and between September and December. As Mauritius is located in the southern hemisphere, the summer and winter months are opposite to seasons in Europe.

Seasons Summer: November to April

The weather is hot and humid during these months, with peaks in temperatures occurring in the months of December, January and February. Rainfall is abundant, especially on the central plateau. The highest rainfall normally occurs in the months of February and March. Daylight hours typically run from 5.30am to 7.00pm.

This is the best time for scuba diving – especially December through to March – and for deep-sea fishing. The cyclonic season extends right the way through from November to April. Most of the time, the cyclones manage to avoid Mauritius because of the small size of the island. However, if they come close enough, the bad weather may affect vegetation and certain wooden buildings. Please rest assured that beach resorts have been constructed in such a way as to be able to resist strong cyclonic winds.

Winter: May to October

The temperature is cooler during this season, and prevailing winds tend to blow over the island from the east and south-east. The lowest temperatures are felt in August (20°C on the coast). Daylight hours typically run from 6.45am to 5.45pm. This is the best season for surfing (June to August).

On the central plateau, which is some 600 metres above sea level, the average day temperature is between 20°C in August and 26°C in February. On the coast, the temperatures are higher by about three to five degrees. The northern and the western parts of the island are warmer and drier than the eastern and the southern regions.
