Self-Guided Audio Tours of Indianapolis Architecture and Landmarks

Union station, 123 w. louisiana st..

Union Stations are called that because they were built to serve as joint stations for two or more railroads instead of every railroad having its own terminal. Indianapolis was home to the world’s very first Union Station, which opened in 1853. This is not the original building, but it is pretty old. It opened in 1888, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. In its heyday, Union Station was one of the busiest train stations in the world, with over 200 trains per day by 1900.

After World War II, train travel declined here, just as it did everywhere else, and was almost gone from Indianapolis by 1970. Union Station fell on hard times and into disrepair from lack of maintenance, and the city tried to figure out what to do. In 1983, part of the train shed was renovated into a hotel that is still there as a Crown Plaza. One unique feature of the hotel is that is has a small number of authentic Pullman sleeping cars from the 20’s for rooms, which are still sitting on the tracks. In 1986 the rest of the station was renovated into a small shopping center at a cost of $30 million, but this lost most of its traffic after the nearby Circle Centre Mall opened. The marketplace in Union Station closed in 1997. After that, the building was given over to private tenants. Perhaps the most prominent tenant today is the Mexican Consulate.

The building is very striking and is done in a style called Romanesque Revival that was popular in its day. It is so-called because it was a resurrection of a style called, not surprisingly, Romanesque that was popular in the 11th and 12th century, especially in France and Spain. The use of arches was one of the signatures of this style, of course hearkening back to the Romans. You can see both the large arches on the ground floor and the arched windows on the third. Other elements of this style are the horizontal belts of stone you see, called belt courses. The style was widely used for churches, and you can clearly see the resemblance between Union Station and a cathedral.

The architect was Thomas Rodd of Pittsburgh, who did a great job as this building is one of the best examples of this style in the Midwest. And not just on the exterior. The interior is also very striking, with a huge, skylit barrel vaulted ceiling running the length of the waiting room.

Romanesque Revival was a popular style for Union Stations. For example, if you ever travel to places like Louisville or Nashville, you’ll be able to instantly recognize their Union Stations, since they are done in a very similar design, albeit with gray stone instead of red and by different architects. This building is older than those, by the way.

There’s actually still train service here today. Amtrak runs one train a day, accessed from a small joint station with Greyhound on the south side of the tracks. By the way, the huge seven acre train shed on the back may not look like much, but it contains fourteen elevated tracks and is one of less than a dozen such structures surviving in America today.

Jennifer Lopez cancels summer tour: 'I am completely heartsick and devastated'

Jennifer Lopez Is Just As Confused By Her Kids’ Math Schoolwork As The Rest Of Us

NEW YORK (AP) — Jennifer Lopez has canceled her 2024 North American tour, representatives for Live Nation confirmed to The Associated Press.

“Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” they said in a statement.

The tour was to be her first in five years, in support of her first solo album in a decade, “This Is Me.... Now" and its companion film.

The tour was scheduled to kick off on June 26 in Orlando, Florida, and conclude in Houston on Aug. 31. Live Nation shared that attendees who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will be automatically refunded.

Lopez offered her own statement to fans on her OntheJLo website and newsletter, writing, “I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary."

She continued: “I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…”

“This Is Me... Now” was released early this year, 20 years after her hit album, “This Is Me... Then.” Lopez told the AP that the new album was a “miracle,” and “a second chance. And I’d love to capture this moment in time the way that album captured that moment in time.”

Forbes’ 2024 Highest-Paid Athletes List Has No Women — Why Change Is Coming

Forbes' newly-released 2024 rankings of the World's Highest-Paid Athletes and America's Richest Self-Made Women reveal a stark contrast in the economic landscape for women across different industries. The Self-Made women's list, dominated by groundbreaking entrepreneurs, entertainers, and corporate leaders, celebrates a record $154 billion combined wealth, highlighting women’s growing influence and financial power in business. Yet, the highest-paid athletes list paints a strikingly different picture, with no single woman making the 50-person cut of top yearly earners. Soccer icon Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the top spot with an astonishing $260 million in earnings, but the monumental paydays for women in sports remain elusive, begging the question of whether the progress made in business will translate to the world of women's sports.

The absence of women on this year's top-earning athletes list is glaring. Polish tennis sensation Iga Świątek, the highest-paid female athlete in 2023, earned $23.9 million, a mere fraction of the $45.2 million needed to secure a spot among 2024's top 50 athletes. Moreover, the entry threshold for the list has nearly doubled over the past decade, further widening the gender gap. Since 2012, only four women have graced the list: Serena Williams , Maria Sharapova , Li Na, and Naomi Osaka . With Williams' retirement last year, the top 50 is emblematic of a lack of financial parity, primarily driven by significant disparities in league revenue, media rights deals, and sponsorship opportunities between men's and women's sports.

In sharp contrast, Forbes' Self-Made women's ranking reflects remarkable growth and achievement in business. The listees' combined wealth has surged by an impressive 25% since last year. Nearly three-quarters are entrepreneurs, while 22 hold chief executive titles. The minimum net worth to qualify surged 35% to $300 million, with a record 31 billionaires, up from 24, underscoring their growing financial power. Although the collective fortunes of this year's top 100 women have yet to rival the wealth of just one of the three richest individuals on Forbes' World's Billionaires List , the momentum is undeniably building.

Earnings and wealth are lagging indicators, but women's strides in business are beginning to manifest on the playing field. The 2023 Forbes list of the World's Highest-Paid Female Athletes saw the median earnings for the top 20 rise by 16% to $8.5 million, with eight athletes surpassing $10 million for the second consecutive year, double the number from 2021.

Surging interest from fans, broadcasters, and commercial partners will accelerate this early momentum. Deloitte projects women's professional sports revenues will reach $1.28 billion this year, a 300% increase from 2020. Lucrative media deals have propelled the annual value for the NWSL and NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament to over $60 million each, directly impacting player earnings. The LPGA Tour's prize money has increased by 76% since 2021, while the NWSL's salary cap has grown by 40% to $2.75 million.

In the realm of endorsements, brands are awakening to the untapped potential of partnering with women athletes, with lucrative deals secured by rising stars like Caitlin Clark, A'ja Wilson , Sabrina Ionescu , and Breanna Stewart. Clark's thrilling NCAA Tournament run propelled TV ratings to record heights, and her WNBA debut brought about the Connecticut Sun's first home opener sellout since 2003. Clark's impressive $28 million endorsement deal over eight years with Nike still fell short of the cutoff for the Highest-Paid Athletes list, but her marketability offers a glimpse into a future where more women athletes could vie for top earnings, signaling a potential shift in the landscape of women's sports.

Trailblazing new models are also upending the status quo, exemplified by the groundbreaking women's professional 3-on-3 basketball league Unrivaled , co-founded by the WNBA’s Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier . By offering salaries that eclipse the WNBA average by more than twofold and introducing revenue-sharing opportunities, Unrivaled is transforming the on-court dynamic and the financial landscape for female athletes.

Just as the extraordinary leaders on the America’s Self-Made Richest Women list have ascended to the highest industry echelons in once seemingly unheard-of ways, the day will come when the world's top earning athletes ranking will feature women fiercely competing for the top spots. The stark zero next to the number of women on Forbes' 2024 Highest-Paid Athletes list is a far cry from a reflection of their immense talent and marketability. The road to equality may be long, but the momentum is undeniable, and the destination is within reach.

The author is an investor in the Unrivaled basketball league.

Newgarden Savors Spoils of ‘500’ Victory on Big Apple Tour

Thursday, May 30, 2024 Curt Cavin, Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Josef Newgarden

Josef Newgarden (photo) threw out the first pitch at the New York Mets-Los Angeles Dodgers' game at Citi Field as part of his Indy 500 winner's tour of New York.

Josef Newgarden was honored for his second consecutive victory in the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge with a second winner’s trip to New York.

Newgarden, who played baseball growing up, threw out the first pitch for the New York Mets’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night at Citi Field. The Team Penske driver had previously thrown out first pitches at home games of the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals.

Two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Newgarden also rang the opening bell at NASDAQ, as he did following his 2023 “500” victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Newgarden won this year’s race with his second straight last-lap pass, this time overtaking Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward with a decisive outside move in Turn 3. Newgarden became just the sixth driver in history to win the “500” in back-to-back years.

While in New York, Newgarden appeared on SiriusXM’s “Beadle and Decker” on Mad Dog Sports Radio, the “Speed Street” podcast with Conor Daly and Joey Mulinaro, “Brick by Brick” with Jack Arute and Tony Kanaan, and had visits with WPIX, CNN World Sport, FoxSports.com and Motorsports Network.

There also was a stop at the Empire State Building for a photo opportunity.

Newgarden collected a winner’s share of $4.288 million, including $440,000 from BorgWarner, the sponsor of the iconic Borg-Warner Trophy, for being the first back-to-back winner since Helio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002, as part of the $18.456 million overall purse. Both figures are event records.

The 33-year-old driver from Nashville, Tennessee, said he’s already thinking about becoming the first driver to win Indy three straight years. Newgarden’s boss, Roger Penske, who has a record 20 such wins, apparently is thinking the same.

“Everybody thought he wants 20 and that’s his (goal), but he’s going to be, ‘OK, how do we get to 21?’” Newgarden said. “He might even say something silly like, ‘We’ve got to get to 25’ or something.

“I just love it; I love his mentality. We’re always moving forward.”

NBC’s broadcast of the “500” realized an 8 percent increase year over year, with an average of 5.344 million viewers on NBC and Peacock. That’s up from 4.927 million in 2023 and 4.837 million in 2022. Last weekend’s race peaked at 6.46 million viewers in the final 15 minutes of the race as Newgarden and O’Ward dueled for the win. Their separation at the checkered flag was .3417 of a second.

NBC said it was the most-streamed NTT INDYCAR SERIES race ever with an average of 286,000 viewers across Peacock and NBC Sports digital platforms. It also was NBC Sports’ most-watched Sunday sports event since an NFL playoff game Jan. 21.

After severe weather forced a four-hour delay, officials allowed Central Indiana consumers to view the race live, delivering an 18.15 household rating and 54 share.

The 200-lap race featured 649 on-track passes, the most in the “500” since 2017.

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES resumes this weekend with the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear. Sunday’s 100-lap race on Detroit’s downtown streets airs live at noon ET on USA Network, Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.
