Posted on Published: December 12, 2023

Nick is a popular traveller and YouTuber.

He has 1.94M subscribers on his YouTube channel, ‘Indigo Traveller.’

Introduction-

Nick Fisher was born in 1992 and he hails from Wānaka, New Zealand.

His mother is a New Zealander and his father is English.

For the initial nine years of his life, Nick grew up in Scotland and then, moved to New Zealand and here, he grew up riding bikes in the mountains.

Love for travelling-

Both his parents have been travellers and at a young age, Nick fell in love with travelling.

While living in Scotland, he along with his family used to travel to France and Spain and after moving to New Zealand, they travelled to Australia.

In his twenties, Nick started travelling to many countries across several continents and never looked back.

Education & career-

Nick didn’t attend college but did an apprenticeship in horticulture which led to a horticulture job and thanks to this job, he was able to save a lot of money which helped him to travel.

After this job, he worked as a tour guide, a cave tour guide and a barista.

Juggling jobs & travelling-

After saving up money by working in the horticulture job, Nick travelled across Australia, South East Asia and Eastern Europe for a couple of years.

Then, he returned to Kaikōura, New Zealand to work as a tour guide and a barista and raise money for his further travels.

Even while working here, Nick used to travel but found it difficult to manage both his jobs and travelling and so, he wanted to find a job compatible with travelling.

So, at that time, he decided to do either travel blogging or vlogging.

Quitting his jobs to become a YouTuber-

As at that time, Nick used to watch a lot of YouTube videos and was confident that he too could become a YouTuber, he decided to become a YouTuber.

Also, as he was passionate about the filmmaking process, YouTube seemed a perfect fit for him.

So, after working for about eight months as a tour guide and a barista, Nick quit his job and became a full-time YouTuber.

On 11 April 2016, he started his YouTube channel by the name Indigo Traveller .

Initially, he flew to Bangkok and then to Hanoi, Vietnam and in Vietnam, he started seriously working on his YouTube channel.

Then, Nick travelled to Cambodia, Singapore, India, Hungary and continued travelling to many other countries.

His inspirations & travelling to off the beaten destinations-

While starting out on YouTube, Nick was greatly inspired by Casey Neistat and his vlogs.

Travel YouTubers like Louis John Cole of FunForLouis and Ben Brown also inspired him.

Inspired by these travel YouTubers, in 2017, he daily vlogged for a few months and even though it was difficult, it taught him many things about working on YouTube.

While starting his YouTube channel in 2016, Nick observed that there weren’t many videos of the off the beaten countries on YouTube and so he decided to make videos on them and chose this as his niche.

So, he travelled to countries like Ukraine (Chernobyl), North Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia, Venezuela, Yemen, etc.

Kurt Caz and Peter Santenello are other travel YouTubers who focus on off the beaten destinations.

A successful YouTuber-

He uses a Sony a7 III and a Canon EOS-1DX Mark II cameras.

Partnering with UNICEF-

On 25 June 2019, Nick published a video titled- Inside Venezuela’s Biggest Slum (Extremely Dangerous) and in this video, he praised the charity work of UNICEF.

Luckily, this video caught the attention of UNICEF and he got invited to work with them.

Nick, with the help of UNICEF, published a series on YouTube by the name- Afghanistan – War Torn Mystery and helped raise thousands of dollars.

Nick also did fundraising campaigns for Haiti, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Ukraine, etc.

A lot of countries-

Initially, he used to stay in cheap hostels but later, as he started becoming popular, he started receiving invites from many nationals through Instagram direct messages and emails.

In one of his interviews, Nick stated that the goal of his YouTube channel is to showcase the positivity of the countries and their citizens, especially of those countries which are usually depicted in a negative light.

Celebrating the Courageous Journeys of Indigo Traveller

In a world brimming with untold stories and unexplored corners, one man, Nick Fisher, known as Indigo Traveller, charts a course through the globe’s most misunderstood regions. It’s about time we celebrate this valiant storyteller within the CherryCoBiz community.

Nick’s odyssey began as an ex-horticultural apprentice, a far cry from the daring voyages that would later define his life’s work. His journey is not just about traversing lands but also about traversing perceptions, bringing to light the human stories that often remain shrouded behind headlines. With his camera as his compass and empathy as his guide, Nick’s YouTube channel, boasting 1.87 million subscribers, invites us to see the world through a lens unmarred by prejudice.

His travelogues are more than mere escapades; they are a testament to the spirit of human resilience and kindness in places deemed perilous or impoverished. From the bustling streets of Iran to the resilient communities of Venezuela, Nick’s videos do more than entertain; they educate and inspire. His gripping content, such as the viral “1 DAY as a TOURIST in SOMALIA,” watched over 2.25 million times, underscores his knack for storytelling that captivates and challenges simultaneously.

Nick’s valiant response to an unexpected shootout during his 2020 tour in Tripoli, Lebanon, only amplifies the authenticity and urgency of his mission. Now based in Hungary, he continues to shatter stereotypes, one journey at a time, partnering with organizations like UNICEF to make a tangible impact.

To the CherryCoBiz community, I say let’s take a leaf out of Indigo Traveller’s book. Let’s approach our holistic health and wellness mission with the same curiosity and courage that Nick brings to his travels. Let’s support and celebrate his work, for in his reflection of the world’s many faces, we find our own humanity echoed.

Indigo Traveller’s bold adventures remind us of the transformative power of travel and storytelling. As we embark on our own journeys of growth and wellness, let’s channel that same intrepid spirit to explore, understand, and ultimately, thrive.

A Journey of Wellness, Learning, and Growth Life’s journey has a curious way of molding us into the best versions of ourselves. I’m a testament to this evolution, standing tall today as a passionate advocate for holistic health and well-being. My Core Values: Honesty, integrity, and sincerity form the pillars of my beliefs and actions. I am driven by a genuine desire to impact lives, both by sharing knowledge and fostering understanding. The Gold of Xanthones: My tryst with health and wellness began with Isagenix, where I was introduced to the magic of mangosteen juice rich in xanthones. The testimonials I've gathered from my journey with products from both CTFO and Isagenix are nothing short of miraculous. My personal 20-year battle with HS vanished, my best friend, a sensitive diabetic, has controlled blood sugars, and older adults have rediscovered their mobility. The love I hold for mangosteen juice runs deep, and the pinnacle of its benefits, in my experience, is the bioavailability of XanthoMyst by CTFO. My goal? To educate as many as I can about these transformative products. A Spiritual Connection: Beyond physical wellness, I have a spiritual core that yearns to connect deeper truths of life with my experiences. Some tales may seem unconventional, but they’re a testament to my journey. A Diverse Background: While I have a foundational knowledge in real estate, it’s my experiences in emergent air medical dispatch and extensive involvement in geriatric care that have shaped me the most. My early career saw me delving deep into geriatric care, from nursing homes and hospices to medication management. But when I lost my Little Grandma, whom I cherished dearly, I felt the pull away from healthcare. It was a personal choice, stemming from a deeply emotional experience. Always Learning: At 47 years young, I've realized that life's true essence lies in continuous learning. It's never too late to start, and there's always more to discover. Join Me: My call to action is simple - "Find ME." Whether you’re seeking a transformative health journey with Isagenix or CTFO, or you wish to venture into building your own business, I’m here for you, every step of the way. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers on New Business Class, Loyalty and Becoming a ‘Global Aviation Player’

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

June 2nd, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

IndiGo, a low-cost carrier known for its no-frills approach, is ambitiously venturing into what seems like long-haul flights and introducing business-class seats. The move aims to target a new generation of travelers while adapting to India's evolving aviation market.

Series: Leaders of Travel: Skift C-Suite Series

Leaders of Travel: Skift C-Suite Series

What are the top trends impacting hotels, airlines, and online bookings? We speak to the executives shaping the future of travel.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers told Skift that the airline’s new business class product would stay faithful to the IndiGo brand and that it’s the right time for an “IndiGo-like product” to serve the next wave of Indian air travelers.

“We now have a whole generation coming up that has never flown business class. Similarly, years ago there was a whole generation in India, that’d never taken a plane, who then became our first-time fliers,” Elbers said.

India’s largest airline has announced a radical shake-up of its operating model. IndiGo says it will debut a business class product by the end of this year. https://t.co/fq5DQiVhqo — Skift (@skift) May 26, 2024

Elbers noted that as India, its economy and the consumers are changing rapidly, IndiGo is building an approach to address those changing customer needs.

In the latest of our Leaders of Travel: Skift C-Suite Series , we sit down with Elbers to find out his plans of turning IndiGo from what he calls a “domestic giant” into a “global aviation player.”

Growth and Indian Economy

Skift: How dependent is IndiGo’s expansion on the India story? If the economy disappoints contrary to the current expectations, can your expansion plan still succeed?

India is largely underserved in terms of number of planes and seats per capita. If the economic growth slows down, aviation will still grow, perhaps at a different percentage, as long as infrastructure and airports continue to be built. With our leases we have very good flexibility and almost continuous evaluation of what our capacity should be.

We have a continuous influx of planes, more than one per week for the next decade. However, our net fleet depends on how many planes we flush out. When supply chain challenges began a year and a half ago, which grounded some planes, we managed to maintain our capacity as promised. Through a whole range of mitigating measures, we’ve been able to deal with external circumstances to keep our growth in place, it can also be the other way around if circumstances so dictate.

Middle Eastern Carrier Alliance?

You have a domestic market share of over 60%. However, international operation is a totally different beast. Would you ever consider an alliance with a Middle Eastern carrier?

Internationally, the accumulative share of Indian carriers is significantly lower than the share of foreign carriers and clearly given the fact that the market is in India itself, that’s a bit odd. We are starting to build on getting our share in those markets and a lot of the recent initiatives are helping us regain that.

When it comes to alliances and partnerships, we work with 7 foreign airlines. This gives them access to the market in India and it gives us an opportunity to create brand awareness and get additional passengers. For partnerships and collaborations, we have a pragmatic approach. I’m not ruling out anything, depending on how the business proposition would look like for both parties.

Open Skies vs. Protectionism

What is your take on open skies vs protectionism?

The open skies agreement between the U.S. and Europe took years to establish. The Europe-U.S. example is a good one because these markets were mature and well developed. Both these markets had grown to a certain stage and airlines on both sides were ready to take the next step in development.

So, when open skies was announced, it was helpful to start creating stronger alliances and joint ventures. In general, one would try to create a regulatory framework serving the needs of the customers and the airlines. For India, it will evolve over time, depending on the time and markets. When an open-skies offers opportunities for both sides, why not? But when that’s not so, you’d probably need a more tailor made and fine-tuned approach.

Multiple-Hub Risk?

At KLM, you had one hub to work with (Amsterdam). IndiGo has multiple hubs. Is there a risk that IndiGo won’t be able to build one good hub, because it has to spread its planes across multiple hubs?

A country of the size of India and its population would justify multiple hubs. IndiGo serves different markets from different hubs: when we started Nairobi flights, we did it out of Mumbai and when we started flying to Central Asia, we did it out of Delhi. The geographical size of India is a fantastic opportunity for us.

But yes, we need a lot of planes for that. And that’s precisely why we ordered so many aircraft. We are building a future network – more complex and much more exciting than what we had. We start to add the XLRs from next year, which means we can reach the shores of Europe, we can reach further into Asia and when the A350s come in, we can reach many corners of the world from any city in India.

indigo traveller wiki

An IndiGo Loyalty Program

You’d earlier mentioned about a loyalty program . When you do develop it, will it be optimized for short-haul travelers, or will you make it more appealing to long-haul passengers?

Last year we announced that we will enhance our loyalty program The existing Ka Ching Card is more like a co-branded credit card than really a loyalty program. Clearly the loyalty program is something that should be part of our building blocks, we’ll reveal more when we have something tangible to announce.

Our network today is domestic heavy, this won’t change in the short term. I think we have a wonderful opportunity in the international regional routes and longer regional flying where we have many customers. This combined with that heavy domestic network are interesting for our customers and potentially also for that loyalty program.

Configuration for Widebodies

The current configuration on the B777 that you’ve wet leased from Turkish has 500 economy seats and about 7 business class seats. Will you be using a similar cabin configuration for the brand new A350s?

We have not yet decided on the exact configuration. We expect delivery in 2027, so we have time to decide that.

The New Delhi Airport

What are your thoughts on the new Jewar airport near Delhi? A welcome addition?

Definitely! We live in the most populous nation on planet Earth, what’s soon to be the third largest economy in the world and then among the top 20 airports of the world we have just one — Delhi.

Paris, London, Shanghai, New York, Sao Paulo, Tokyo all have two or more airports as a result of the demand in these cities. In India, we got a second airport in Goa last year, which of course is much smaller than Delhi and Mumbai. This second Goa airport hardly took away any traffic from the existing airport. Jewar is surely a welcome addition. It will help develop the system even better.

The interview has been edited for clarity and length.
