Eddie Nesmith ‘20

Concentration: Molecular and Cellular Biology House: Dunster Employer: Harvard Admissions and Financial Aid Office

Eddie knew he was meant for this job before he even had any experience with it - his bubbly and open personality was just that cut out for what the job’s responsibilities called for. “I never had a college tour experience as a high school student, but it’s just one of those things I knew I wanted - that wherever I ended up going to school, it was something that I would want to do.” And once hired as a tour guide for the Harvard Admissions Office, Eddie discovered that the role was everything he had hoped for and more.

student with badge

Reflecting on his time at Harvard, Eddie shares how it has been an incredible experience - one that he’s eager to share as tour guide with all the prospective students. “I’m really enthusiastic about my Harvard experience, and I find that this is a really good opportunity to share that experience. I talk about my friends and how much I’ve learned from them, how Dunster House is the best, about academics and my favorite professor Rob Lue and how he’s so corny. I love sharing how positive my Harvard experience has been.”

But more than that, Eddie believes it’s important to communicate an accurate representation of Harvard students and student life that dispels any assumptions about this school that prospective students may have. “I’m really excited about that process of sharing with prospective students, and dispelling preconceptions of Harvard students, and I’m just like ‘No, no, no. Everyone’s different.’ I would not classify every Harvard student under one stereotype. Everyone’s individual, everyone’s super friendly. We do do work here, but we have hobbies and interests and passions that are not necessarily academic, like yes, I want to Boston and get Panera and Ben & Jerry’s, so yes, we’re normal people as well, so I just like to convey that sentiment.”

student jumping in the air

As Eddie sums up, he recommends that everyone should work as a tour guide for the Admissions Office, overbrimming with enthusiasm for the job. “I like my job a lot, and I actually enjoy it. I like to interact with people, I love talking to people, so like this was a perfect fit for me. I truly believe that you can make anything out of your experience at Harvard, and I get to share that. I feel like it has been a really positive experience for me, like in that respect, I enjoy talking to people about Harvard, but additionally, I feel like I’ve cultivated my own public speaking style, where I can be more comfortable presenting in general - I feel like it’s given me a life skill that I needed to ascertain.”

Going to Boston Calling this weekend? Here's the schedule and everything you need to know about the 2024 festival

By Riley Rourke

Updated on: May 24, 2024 / 6:26 PM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON - It's Boston Calling weekend. From the lineup, to parking, to the bag policy, here is everything you need to know about the three-day festival at the Harvard Athletic Complex.

Boston Calling 2024

Boston Calling 2024 is set to ring in summertime on Memorial Day weekend. Starting Friday at 1 p.m., head to the Harvard Athletic Complex to watch all the hottest artists and some up-and-coming musicians.

The festival runs from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Over two dozen local food vendors will be present, as will plenty of sponsored stalls from places like Dunkin'. The iconic Ferris wheel will also return this year for all your photo needs.

Make sure you dress accordingly for the weather . The festival recommends that people bring a hat and sunglasses with them.

Are there any tickets left?

There are one-day tickets left for Friday and Saturday, but Sunday is sold out. One-day tickets for general admission start at $196.

But don't worry if you really want to see Sunday's lineup, there are still three-day passes available! Three-day passes start at $392 for general admission.

Friday lineup

Ed Sheeran will be headlining on Friday at the Green Stage. Renée Rapp, who may or may not hate Boston , will also be on the Green Stage earlier in the day. You'll have to make some serious decisions later on because Leon Bridges and Young The Giant have a significant overlap in their sets.

But make sure you check out The Wolff Sisters from Canton on the Orange Stage just before 3 p.m.

662107e51f8a216228346142-bc24-set-time-schedule-friday-1080x1080.jpg

Saturday lineup

Boston Calling brings country music to the city on Saturday. Headliner Tyler Childers will perform on the Green Stage at 9 p.m. Before Childers, listen to plenty of other artists, like Phish's Trey Anastasio & Classic Tab and Jessie Murph.

Check out Bad Rabbits on the Happy Valley Red Stage at 3 p.m. as they make their return to Boston Calling 13 years later.

662107fa802edd9170408ddc-bc24-set-time-schedule-saturday-1080x1080.jpg

Sunday lineup

Sunday, the only sold-out day, is clearly in demand for festival lovers. Headliner The Killers will take the Green Stage on the final day at 9:10 p.m.

Make sure you have your best shoes on because there are plenty of quick turnarounds on Sunday if you want to catch the most popular artists. New pop sensation Chappell Roan will play on the Green Stage at 4:05 p.m. before Megan Thee Stallion takes it over at 6:25 p.m. But make sure you hustle after Megan's performance to Hozier at the Happy Valley Red Stage at 7:35 p.m.

If you missed out on tickets to see The Killers, they will perform a special show at Paradise Rock Club on Saturday night.

Boston Calling address and parking

Whether you are taking an Uber or a friend is dropping you off, it's important you know where to go to get into the festival. The official address for Boston Calling is 65 N Harvard St, Allston, MA 02134.

As for parking, there are no official parking lots nearby, and festival officials recommend that people take the MBTA Red Line to Harvard Square and walk ten minutes from there.

All bags will be checked by security upon entry. There are several items you should not bring in your bags, such as weapons, aerosol containers, smoking products, including vape pens, outside food, and alcohol. You are able to bring in your own water bottle, but it must be empty upon arrival.

All small clutches and fanny packs that are 6" x 9" or smaller are allowed in. They do not need to be clear, but they must only have one pocket.

Anything larger than 6" x 9" has to be smaller than 12" x 6" x 12", and it must be clear.

You are allowed to bring in a hydration pack, but it must only have two pockets, and it cannot have any liquid in it when you enter the festival.

For a full list of things, you cannot bring into the festival go to  Boston Calling's website.

How many people are attending?

The festival is expected to have around 40,000 people attending throughout the weekend!

Elevate your impact as a public leader

The Master in Public Administration Program is for aspiring leaders with real-world experience and graduate-level coursework in economics, public policy, or management.

The Master in Public Administration (MPA) curriculum is flexible. You create a study plan that reflects your academic interests, focuses on your personal and professional aspirations, and integrates across disciplines.

You may also decide to pursue a concurrent degree in business, law, medicine, or other professional fields. You’ll earn two degrees in less time and acquire even more skills you can use to make a difference in the world.

“HKS provided opportunities for me to expand the narrative of what diversity looks like in foreign policy and foreign service.” —Korde Innis MPA 2023

About the MPA Program

The MPA curriculum is flexible. You’ll create your own 64-credit study plan that reflects your academic interests and professional aspirations.

As an MPA student, you’ll take eight credits in a Policy Area of Concentration as well as four credits in each of these key areas:

  • Economics and Quantitative Analysis
  • Management, Leadership, and Decision Sciences
  • Public Ethics and Political Institutions

You’ll select your remaining credits to support your unique intellectual and professional objectives. You can take classes across academic disciplines at HKS and cross-register into courses at other Harvard graduate schools as well as at MIT Sloan School of Management and The Fletcher School at Tufts University.

Sample Courses

  • MLD-223: Negotiating Across Differences
  • API-135: Economics of Climate Change and Environmental Policy
  • DPI-640: Technology and the Public Interest: From Democracy to Technocracy and Back

Concurrent Degrees

You might consider  pursuing a second degree concurrently  if you’re interested in how the world’s public challenges can be addressed at the intersection of business, law, medicine, design, or other fields.

Pursuing a concurrent degree reduces coursework and residency requirements and makes it possible to earn two degrees in a shorter amount of time.

Concurrent degree students complete 48 credits at HKS, including four credits in each of the key areas:

Concurrent degree students are not required to fulfill the Policy Area of Concentration requirement.

Degree Requirements

The MPA Program consists of four semesters of full-time coursework in residence at HKS.

To graduate, you must:

  • Earn at least 64 credits
  • Finish with a GPA of B or better
  • Earn a B- or higher in all courses counting towards the distribution requirements
  • Matriculate as a full-time, in-residence student and take between 12-20 credits per semester
  • Fulfill a Policy Area of Concentration requirement by taking eight credits in one of the policy areas at HKS
  • Economics and Quantitative Analysis

HKS  faculty members  are among the most influential leaders and thinkers in their fields. They have contributed vital research and scholarship to their fields. Served in U.S. administrations. Founded learning labs to assist local communities. Led negotiations to reduce nuclear stockpiles. Reported on human rights abuses. Led efforts to address climate change. Advised governments and companies on gender equality.

They are doers as well as thinkers, shaping public policy and devising entrepreneurial approaches to public problems at the local, national, and international levels.
