Falls Park on the Reedy Falls Park on the Reedy free

Falls Park on the Reedy is a favorite of both locals and visitors alike. Located in the heart of downtown, the park features beautiful stonework, walking trails, waterfalls, picnic areas, lush gardens and public art installations, complemented by the graceful architecture of the Liberty Bridge. The two-acre Pedrick's Garden, which serves as the park's main entrance, honors a former community leader instrumental in the establishment of Falls Park. What's more, two eateries are located within the park: enjoy salads, sandwiches and Southern favorites at Mary's Restaurant at Falls Cottage or French fare at Passerelle Bistro.

Recent visitors said Falls Park is a popular place for families and pet lovers, noting that kids love watching the ducks and dogs enjoying the many walking trails. Many also noted the beautiful bridge and garden and some suggested bringing a picnic to enjoy this peaceful spot. Other reviewers enjoyed the park's two on-site restaurants, as well as its proximity to other popular downtown eateries. 

Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail free

Bring your own bike or rent one at Reedy Rides to explore the nearly 20-mile-long Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, which runs along the Reedy River from downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest (a city in Greenville County). Stop at mile marker 24 to get your heart pumping at the Bike Skills Flow Park or pack a picnic and take a break along the way at the Furman University campus. Before you head out, download the mobile Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail food guide to find lunch and dinner spots, or the ArcGIS Interactive Map, which bookmarks features on the trail from restrooms and water fountains to ATMs.

Visiting cyclists love this paved bike trail, touting the convenient stops and the full-service bike shop along the route. Recent riders said there are fun restaurants at both ends of the trail, in Greenville's County Square and in Travelers Rest, and some recommended detouring into the Furman University campus for a rest break or picnic by the lake. Others suggested relaxing on the patio at the Swamp Rabbit Brewery & Taproom in Travelers Rest.

Greenville County Museum of Art Greenville County Museum of Art free

This small museum is home to the world's largest public collection of watercolors by American artist Andrew Wyeth and also boasts an extensive assemblage of works by South Carolina artist Jasper Johns. Additionally, the museum's Southern Collection offers a visual depiction of the Southern experience, ranging from the colonial period to the present.

Reviewers loved the modern feel of this small museum, calling the building itself a work of art. Others said the works on display are definitely worth seeing, especially Wyeth's watercolor collection and the contemporary works of Johns. Many visitors also praised the free admission and the convenient downtown location. 

Runway Park at GMU Runway Park at GMU free

The Greenville Downtown Airport features a unique aviation-themed park that kids of all ages are sure to love. A Cessna plane mounted on a pole anchors the two playgrounds, which feature play structures, grassy areas and walking "runways." When kids aren't watching aircraft take off and land, they can learn about the history and science of aviation thanks to the park's educational displays. The Perimeter Taxiway around the park serves as a walking and jogging trail and a picnic hangar is available for family and party rentals. What's more, the adjacent Runway Café serves casual food.

Recent visitors call this park "a must" for kids, and said it's a great place for little ones to run and play or ride their bikes, commending the park's cleanliness and accessibility. Many commented on the excellent facilities including a picnic shelter, new restrooms, multiple play areas and a walking track, and several mentioned the Runway Café as an easy place to grab lunch. 

Dark Corner Distillery Dark Corner Distillery

The northeastern corner of Greenville County – an area located in the Appalachian hills – has been known for more than 175 years as Dark Corner, due to its long association with moonshiners. Paying homage to this history, Dark Corner Distillery continues the traditions of the Celts who originally settled there by producing small batch moonshine, including aged whiskey, gin and absinthe. The downtown tasting room offers samples of six spirits, accompanied by a history of each product.

Visitors loved the tastings at Dark Corner Distillery, citing inventive cocktails that pleased even those who weren't whiskey aficionados. Many applauded the reasonable $5 tasting fee, which included a souvenir shot glass, and several visitors suggested purchasing bottles to take home as gifts. While most tasters found the downtown location convenient and the tasting process a fun and quick activity, some complained of long waits during busy times. 

The Children's Museum of the Upstate The Children's Museum of the Upstate

Located on the Heritage Green cultural campus in downtown Greenville, The Children's Museum of the Upstate offers three floors of unique, interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages. Kids can build dams and float toy ducks and boats in the Reedy River Bend, play guitar in the Garage Rock exhibit, build skyscrapers in the Construction Zone or host a news show in the WTCM broadcasting studio. Meanwhile, young children can play in the Toddler Lily Pond or enjoy the outdoor recreation area. Plus, the on-site cafeteria is stocked with kid favorites like Chick-fil-A sandwiches.

Recent visitors described this children's museum as both affordable and fun for kids and adults, and said the hands-on exhibits were entertaining and educational, especially the interactive grocery store. Out-of-town visitors were pleasantly surprised by the merchandise selection and reasonable prices in the gift shop, and many appreciated the on-site cafeteria and the convenient downtown location. 

Centre Stage Centre Stage

This regional, 285-seat theater offers a subscription season of music, comedy and drama, as well as independent film screenings, chamber music concerts, lectures and special art exhibitions throughout the year.

Recent travelers called this local theater "a hidden gem," praising the in-the-round seating and the quality of the productions. Many recommended arriving early to enjoy a drink before the show or visiting the nearby Playwright Irish Pub for a meal after the performance. Some visitors complained that the refreshment stand at the theater had problems processing credit card purchases. Others recommended arriving early to locate free street parking, rather than paying $5 at the lot next to the theater. 

Paris Mountain State Park Paris Mountain State Park

Located 5 miles north of Greenville, Paris Mountain State Park is a popular retreat for families looking for outdoor recreation. The park was originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and several park structures, including the bathhouse – now the Park Center – and Camp Buckhorn Lodge, hold a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The center features historical exhibits, while the park offers campsites, picnic shelters, a swimming area with a lifeguard, a playground, a camp store and a 15-acre lake with fishing and canoe, kayak and pedal boat rentals.

Although recent visitors said the scenery is underwhelming, many enjoyed the stone bridges and informational signage along the variety of hiking paths, from the challenging Sulphur Springs Trail to the relaxing loop around the lake. Reviewers also enjoyed the variety of activities and said the park is ideal for families, dogs and groups of friends. However, a few felt the $5 admission fee was too much to pay to access the hiking trails.

The Peace Center The Peace Center

This performing arts center in the heart of downtown Greenville offers a 2,100-seat concert venue, a 400-seat theater and an outdoor amphitheater. In addition to presenting Broadway shows, comedy, dance and a variety of musical performances, the Peace Center is home to the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, the Greenville Chorale, two ballet companies and the South Carolina Children's Theater.

Recent visitors called this "an exceptional venue," noting that even upper level seats offer a great view. Many also praised the attentive service from the theater's staff and said they were surprised to find such a quality venue in a city the size of Greenville. Most reviewers found the prices reasonable and the proximity to downtown restaurants a plus, but noted that parking was difficult.

While Caesars Head State Park isn’t actually in Greenville, it’s worth making the journey to see it.

All kinds of incredible outdoor activities can be seen here, and you’ll see animals you might’ve never seen in person before.

Part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area with Jones Gap State Park, Caesars Head State Park offers incredible trails and views that make artists salivate.

The best to see is the powerful Raven Cliff Falls.

If you want to rough it, there are camping options available.

Since you’ll be out in the wilderness, you need to be mindful of the animals in the region, such as bears.

Caesars Head State Park is one of the best places to go in South Carolina .

If you want to check out the trail, it’s open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during Daylight Saving Time and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during other times of the year.

Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for seniors who live in South Carolina, and $1 for children, ages six to 15.

5. Furman University

You don’t need to be pursuing a degree to check out Furman University .

South Carolina’s longest-standing private university, Furman is one of the most impressive educational establishments in the south.

Its campus is particularly gorgeous, full of various features that might have your high schoolers considering applying.

True to its name, Larkin’s on the River is situated right by the Reedy River.

Its building goes back more than a century, but it doesn’t show it’s age.

Then, there’s the matter of the menu.

For lunch and dinner, Larkin’s is serving absolute deliciousness.

This might be the best place to get a steak in the city, especially if you get some lobster on the side.

Dining experiences should be just that.

They should expand your mind in some way, whether it’s through marveling at how good the service was or how tender your steak was.

Larkin’s on the River provides just that.

It’s open for lunch every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dinner is available from Sunday to Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Dinner offers amazing seafood and items from the Chef’s Selections.

Plus, the famous gelato more than lives up to its reputation.

You can look at photos of their Mango Sorbetto or Caramel Latte Crunch and just want to lick the screen.

When you’re visiting downtown Greenville, make sure you check out Luna Rosa.

With a menu that balances the hearty and the light and mindblowing gelato, this is a true Greenville gem.

This rooftop establishment combines incredible cocktails with amazing eats.

With plenty of fresh and local items, UP on the Roof gives you the best of Greenville.

Come here for dinner, lunch, brunch, or just a drink, and you should leave satisfied.

Their menu has refined items like lobster ravioli and mushroom risotto.

There are also plenty of options for vegans diners, such as their meat-less “Beyond Balls.”

As for the drinks, you might just crave a local beer or choose to go all-out with one of their renowned cocktails.

There’s so much craft that goes into creating drinks like “The Reedy Peach” or “The Black Dahlia.”

You’ll be giving your taste buds a true journey when you try one of these.

UP on the Roof is one of the top 10 places to dine or drink in Greenville, South Carolina.

There are also both indoor and outdoor dining options.

This restaurant brings the Mediterranean to the south with total poise.

It’s also near the Reedy River, and that water view is one you have to embrace.

Likewise, The Lazy Goat’s has some very cool seating options.

Different countries and continents are represented on The Lazy Goat’s menu.

Items like their Moroccan Lamb and “Lazy Paella” show just how dynamic Mediterranean cuisine is.

There are also communal tables, which is great if you’re with a group and want to share your meals.

The Lazy Goat is one of the top restaurants in Greenville.

Hopefully, you can eat there at least once during your visit.

It’s open for lunch from Fridays to Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for dinner from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Near downtown Greenville is Paris Mountain State Park .

This is an already awesome sightseeing destination.

On land and in the water, you can have fun at Paris Mountain State Park.

You can go hiking or take a bike out one of Paris Mountain State Parks’ many trails.

The park is also surrounded by many lakes, including Lake Placid.

There’s also more than three dozen campsites and six places for picnics.

This is more entertainment than you could get from most movie theaters or bars.

Perhaps the best way to think of Gather Greenville is to imagine a food court on steroids. This open-air venue currently houses 13 container restaurants serving food and beverages to suit any palate and budget. It has an impressive variety of offerings, such as doughnut sandwiches, lobster rolls, sushi, craft beer, and what may well be the best Cuban sandwich this side of Miami.

Have you visited Greenville, South Carolina lately? This city adopted a great slogan to attract visitors — “Yeah, that Greenville” and it is working. The city has really changed, becoming a haven for both young people and retirees. There are many things to do in Greenville, SC, and it is especially charming since it is easily walkable.

With a walkable downtown area and even waterfalls downtown, Greenville is picturesque as well as a great city to explore. It is easy to see why Forbes named it one of America’s Best Downtowns. Within a few blocks, visitors will find hotels, restaurants, shops, and parks. Park your vehicle at your hotel and forget about it for the remainder of your weekend.

If you’re visiting during a weekend, or for just a few days, here are 10 things not to miss during your Greenville, South Carolina, visit:

1. Take a walking tour of downtown

One of the best ways to explore a city is with a walking tour and Greenville offers plenty of them. Whether you like historical, culinary, Segway, or ghost tours, Greenville has them all. Want to do it at your own pace? Download one to your phone or tablet from GPSMyCity . The advantage of having a guide with you is that you can ask questions and find out about places to go to from a local. If mobility is not an issue, I highly encourage you to take a walking tour — Greenville’s hot spots are easily reachable with your own two feet.

2. Foodies rejoice!

Touted as a foodie city by the likes of Southern Living and USA Today , foodies will certainly enjoy their time in Greenville. So don’t forget to pack your stretchy pants! Don’t want to try to figure it out on your own? The city’s visitors’ bureau offers breakfast tours, a chef’s table tour, cocktail tours, and even a dessert tour. One of the most well-known restaurants is Soby’s New South Cuisine , which led downtown’s revitalization. Just make sure you make reservations ahead of time!    

The Food Network has come to town several times, so visitors should certainly check out where they’ve been but don’t miss out on other chefs too! 

PRO TIP: Stop by Maple Street Biscuit Company (18 East North Street). With communal seating that encourages getting to know your neighbor or locals, eating here is a fun experience. Try the Squawking Goat featured on the Food Network.

3. Stroll and shop along Main Street

After eating all that food, you’ll want to walk it off. Covering approximately ten blocks, Main Street in Greenville is pedestrian-friendly. The sidewalks are wide and accommodating. There is plenty of parking on the street, with additional parking decks nearby. 

Housing about 120 shops and restaurants, it is a fun area to just walk around and window shop. 

Don’t miss Mast General Store . You’ll find a little bit of everything — from your favorite Clemson gear to Columbia apparel to Yeti products. Shoppers will also find everything they need for their next outdoor adventure — from camping to fishing gear. Travelers will find a nice assortment of Badger and Burt Bees products too.

We bought some chocolate at Kilwins Chocolate, Fudge and Ice Cream Shop at NoMa Square . You can never go wrong with bringing back chocolate souvenirs from your trip!

PRO TIP: A free trolley service transports visitors along the most popular areas for those who wish to cover greater distances or who are just a bit tired. You can check their schedules .

4. Find the Mice on Main Street 

No, not the bad kind of mice but nine unique bronze statues interspersed between the Hyatt Regency and the Westin Poinsett. If, like me, you read Goodnight Moon a million times, then you’ll be glad to know that this childhood book inspired this high school senior project. The statues are now a Greenville institution and the clues to each mouse’s location can be found here .

It is a fun family activity and certainly makes you more observant of your surroundings. Sadly, I couldn’t find all of them myself but I was short on time. Some of these mice are either really small or very good at hiding!

5. Admire the views from the Liberty Bridge

Completed in 2004, the Liberty Bridge passes over the Reedy River, providing pedestrians with unique views of waterfalls inside the city. Yes, you read that right — the city of Greenville has waterfalls inside the city. 

The sweeping curve of the design makes it an ideal photo spot – the perfect Instagram spot! It is a great place to meet friends and start your walk around town. This pedestrian-only suspension bridge spans 345 feet over the Reedy River.

Access (and parking) is available in the hip West End neighborhood. 

6. Relax at Falls Park on the Reedy

Surrounding the area around the Liberty Bridge is Falls Park on the Reedy. The park features walking trails, sitting areas, and even performance areas. The entrance to the park in the West End neighborhood is surrounded by restaurants, coffee shops, and a mix of residential and commercial buildings. 

7. Ride a bicycle along the Swamp Rabbit Trail

If you’re already at Falls Park, you can access this approximately 20-mile long trail from here. Multiple access points can be found throughout the city otherwise. Rent one of the ride-share bikes available and explore the trail. You can find your way to restaurants and breweries from here. Enjoy lots of relaxing spots along the trail and enjoy nature. It leads downtown visitors to the zoo if that is a place of interest. 

8. Tour the campus of Furman University

The oldest private university in South Carolina, founded in 1826, Furman University opened in its current Greenville location in 1958. Located next to Falls Park, the campus is picturesque and worth visiting. Frequently hailed as one of the most beautiful universities in the United States, visitors shouldn’t miss seeing the bell tower next to the lake. The Asia-inspired gardens and elegant Georgian-inspired buildings are worth a walk-through for admirers of architecture. 

9. Enjoy a cold frosty beverage at one of the city’s 15+ breweries

Frequent readers know that I am a firm believer that local craft breweries are one of my favorite things to do in cities — and Greenville is no exception. Several breweries are located within blocks from Main Street and not far from the several spots on this list. You’re sure to find the perfectly brewed beer to cool you down from all your hard work in exploring the city. Two breweries, Yee Haw Brewery and Fireforge Crafted Beer are just the perfect stops if you want to stay within walking distance of Main Street.

PRO TIP: Enjoy the views from UP on the Roof . If you’re looking for a great place for lunch, dinner, or even drinks with fabulous views of downtown Greenville, you won’t regret a visit to UP on the Roof. This is rooftop dining at its best, featuring locally sourced seasonal ingredients. 

10. Attend a show 

My last-minute trip to Greenville, South Carolina was inspired by an invite to watch the Trans Siberian Orchestra at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Located in downtown Greenville, traffic patterns and parking can be difficult, so give yourself extra time to arrive on time.  Greenville, South Carolina is fortunate to enjoy several large venues, but the two listed below are the ones that attract the most visitors:

Near Falls Park and on the Reedy River is this unique facility hosting various art performances. At the corner of Main and Broad. A large six-acre campus.

PRO TIP: If you’re spending the night, consider staying at a hotel within walking distance. We stayed at the Home2Suites by Hilton . While the facility charges $15 per night and is valet parking only, that was cheaper than the $20 fees we saw for other nearby lots. Plus, you can refresh yourself after a drive and explore downtown without worrying about drinking and driving.

Greenville tops SC desirability list: Here's why people are moving to the Upstate

Planning to move to a state with a low cost of living and great weather? If so, South Carolina may be your new place to call home.

Snowbirds often flock to coastal areas like Charleston and Hilton Head Island to escape the northern chill, but when it comes down to the data, these areas are no longer the most desirable cities in S.C. in terms of livability.

A 2024 USA TODAY Homefront analysis ranked 26 cities in S.C. across quality-of-life metrics such as activities, affordability, unemployment rates, walkability, and quality of schools. The study's findings revealed five inland cities ranked among the top 5: Greenville was named No.1, Mauldin No. 4, and Spartanburg No. 5.

"Meanwhile, the more coastal cities of Goose Creek, Hanahan, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Hilton Head Island fell to the bottom five spots." said the report.

On the other hand, when it comes to the top 10 cities for relocating to in the U.S., Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, North Carolina, secured top spots, according to an annual moving trend report from PODS , a leading portable container company. The Greenville-Spartanburg area still pushed through, landing at No. 4 on the list.

"Last year, we noted the Carolinas were worth watching, and this year, they’ve not only taken the trophy as the number one spot for new moves but also broken a record,” Rich Schwartz, SVP of corporate operations at PODS, said in a news release. “On the flip side, we’re continuing to see a throughline where expensive metro areas are prompting Americans to flock to cities and states where the cost of living is lower, and the lifestyle is more balanced."

S.C.'s eye-catching architecture, natural beauty, and southern charm make the state all the more tempting to move to, the USA TODAY Homefront report mentioned. What really makes it stand out to migrators, however, are its financial perks:

∎ Between 2022-2023, S.C.'s population grew by 1.7%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It is currently the fastest growing population in the U.S.

∎ Greenville is USA TODAY's best city to move to in S.C. due to its affordable housing options for buyers and renters, as well as its top medical access.

∎ Charleston and Hilton Head Island may be popular S.C. cities among travelers, but they ranked low in the report due to their high housing costs and high homeowner insurance premiums.

83-year-old South Carolina woman gored by bison in Yellowstone National Park suffers serious injuries

A n 83-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when she was gored Saturday by a bison in the famed Yellowstone National Park, officials said Monday in a news release.

The bison was “defending its space” when It came within a few feet of her and then used its horns to lift the Greenville, South Carolina, woman about a foot off the ground, park officials said.

The incident happened near the Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake in Wyoming, according to the release. Park emergency responders took the woman to Lake Medical Clinic in Village Lake, and then she was then flown by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Officials on Monday didn’t share information about the woman’s condition and said the incident is under investigation.

“Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal,” Yellowstone National Park officials said. Though the animals are usually not aggressive, they will defend “their space when threatened,” park officials said.

“(Bison) are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans,” the release reads.

Park says people should stay at least 25 yards from bison

National parks can pose dangers to visitors, especially those who don’t heed warnings about wildlife and natural hazards.

Yellowstone issues cautionary advice, telling visitors to remember its animals “ are wild and can be dangerous ” when approached.

“When an animal is near a campsite, trail, boardwalk, parking lot or in a developed area, give it space. It is your responsibility to stay more than 25 yards … away from all large animals – bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes – and at least 100 yards … away from bears and wolves,” the park said in Monday’s news release.

Male bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds,  the park says . Despite their bulk, they are considered agile and can jump over objects about 5 feet high.

Park visitors are also being warned this week that elk with calves can be extremely dangerous.

“Be alert, especially this time of year around Mammoth Hot Springs. Elk calves may be hidden close to buildings, under or next to vehicles, and around blind corners,” park officials said in an alert on their website.

WLOS — Park rangers are once again reminding the public to give wildlife their space after a woman from Upstate South Carolina was seriously injured by a bison out West.

A press release from the National Park Service says an 83-year-old woman from Greenville, South Carolina was gored by a bison on June 1 in Yellowstone National Park.

"The bison, defending its space, came within a few feet of the woman and lifted her about a foot off the ground with its horns," the release says.

After being transported to a medical clinic, the unidentified woman was then flown by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

There was no information on the woman's exact condition, and the Park Service said the incident remains under investigation.

In the release, park officials reminded visitors, "It’s your responsibility to respect safety regulations and view wildlife from a safe distance. Move away from wildlife if they approach you."

The release provides the following information and safety tips regarding wildlife in Yellowstone National Park and beyond:

• Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild and can be dangerous. Wild animals can be aggressive if people don't respect their space. When an animal is near a campsite, trail, boardwalk, parking lot or in a developed area, give it space. It is your responsibility to stay more than 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals – bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes – and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves. If need be, move or turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in close proximity.
• Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal. Bison are not aggressive animals but will defend their space when threatened. They are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.

Yellowstone bison gores 83-year-old while ‘defending its space,’ park says

The woman was lifted a foot into the air by the bison’s horns and was seriously injured, the park said. Officials have long warned tourists to stay away from bison.

An 83-year-old woman was seriously injured after being gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park and lifted into the air by its horns, officials said.

The bison attacked her near the Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake on Saturday, the National Park Service said in a Monday statement , adding that the animal was “defending its space.”

The bison “came within a few feet of the woman and lifted her about a foot off the ground with its horns,” it said.

The victim from Greenville, S.C., who was not named, was transported to Lake Medical Clinic and then flown by helicopter to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, according to the Park Service. The statement added that officials are investigating the incident.

Neither the Park Service nor the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center responded to a request early Tuesday for more information.

The Park Service statement reiterated guidance urging visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from large animals, including bison, at all times, and at least 100 yards from bears and wolves.

“Bison are not aggressive animals but will defend their space when threatened,” park officials cautioned after the latest goring. “They are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.” The Park Service advises that the safest way to view Yellowstone’s wildlife is from inside a car.

According to the park, bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal. Last year, a woman was gored by a bison near the northern shore of Yellowstone Lake . Officials said she was walking away from two of the animals when one charged and inflicted “serious injuries to her chest and abdomen.”

The year before, two other Yellowstone visitors were attacked by bison within weeks of each other. In May 2022, a 25-year-old woman was gored by a female bison and tossed 10 feet into the air after she approached the animal near the Old Faithful geyser, park officials said; she suffered a puncture wound and other injuries. The following month, a 34-year-old man from Colorado Springs was walking with his family on a boardwalk near Giant Geyser when a bull bison charged the group and the family did not leave the area, park officials said. The man was gored by the bull and suffered an arm injury, it said .

According to the Park Service , Yellowstone was home to a population of nearly 5,000 bison in 2023 — 10 times its population in 1970.

Bison are the largest land mammals in North America , with male bulls weighing up to 2,000 pounds and female cows up to 1,000. They can run at speeds up to 35 miles per hour, swim, spin, and jump over 5-foot fences.

As recently as two centuries ago, bison dominated the North American continent in their millions. As the United States pushed westward in the 19th century , however, European colonizers massacred the animals in their thousands as a sport, for their pelts and in an attempt to starve Indigenous tribes and push them off their ancestral homes.

Yellowstone is the only place in the United States where bison have lived without interruption since prehistoric times, according to the Department of the Interior .

Park officials also urge visitors against going off-trail to explore Yellowstone’s geological thermal areas. Despite warnings that the ground beneath hot springs is fragile and that scalding thermal springs pose burn risks to curious hands, visitors have repeatedly ignored signs warning them against testing the waters, with many burned or injured as a result.
