Ford hasn’t made a Super Duty Excursion SUV for years. But that hasn’t stopped enthusiasts from wishing it still did. That was the basis behind MegaRexx Trucks’ converting an F-250 into a new Excursion. And if you like it, you can buy one of these hulking seven-passenger SUVs .

Over-the-top trucks are a MegaRexx specialty. The Castle Hayne, North Carolina-based outfit calls this three-row extra-large SUV the “MegaRexx SVN.” We’ve covered the company’s other creations, including the MegaRaptor and MegaBronc . When it comes to Ford trucks on bath salts, MegaRexx delivers.

First, the company fashions a long roof from aluminum. Then it turns the F-250 bed into a part of the cabin. Easier said than done, we know. It’s integrated with the rest of the F-250 , not just a fiberglass bed cap.

The long expanse of tinted windows in the murdered-out presentation goes almost unnoticed.

Inside, the blackness continues with leather-trimmed Lariat Ultimate everything. That and more give the cabin an upscale appearance.

The front and second-row seating feature power bucket seats. And the rear uses a Ford Expedition third row, trimmed like the front and middle-row bucket seats. Additionally, the third-row passengers get a Vintage Air climate-controlled system. And with the Lariat Ultimate trim, the front seats come heated and ventilated.

Also, expect the Ford Sync 4 infotainment system and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system as part of the package. 

This 7-seat Excursion conversion has other unique touches

Outside, the MegaRexx SVN Super Duty receives a modest 2.5-inch lift, along with a Carli Suspension leveling system. The 20-inch rims are Fuel Militia wheels, supporting 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler off-road hoops. Thanks to those tires and lift, tubular side steps are also part of the package.

In addition, you’ll find plenty of MegaRexx ID badging on the exterior. The front and rear fenders get badges, as do the C-pillars. Also, the company name is emblazoned on the tailgate. Inside, the only identification appears on the dash, expected for a high-end custom SUV . 

How much does a MegaRexx SVN Ford F-250 ‘Excursion’ cost?

The starting price is $179,950. At first, that’s enough to make you think twice. But this vehicle is truly unique, yet it can haul family, friends, toys, and more with ease. And it’s big. If you want big, the MegaRexx SVN is it.

Furthermore, this Excursion conversion looks like it came from Ford. Some other aftermarket creations look like hatchet jobs. MegaRexx has done plenty of similar conversions for the past few years. So don’t be afraid. Step up to a large, luxe, rugged 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty “Excursion.”

Some of us demand vehicles that are large, rugged and powerful. Sure, you can go pick an SUV or truck up off of the showroom floor, but maybe it’s time you ordered a truck that has been completely customized to your liking.

RAD-Rides , a Texas-based automotive engineering provider, has noticed the need for a capable SUV that can be customized from the ground up. How to upgrade your Ford Excursion's suspension to the F250 Coil Spring setup.

Every off-roading enthusiast knows a vehicle's suspension system is crucial in providing a comfortable and safe ride, particularly when driving on rough terrain. The suspension system absorbs shocks and vibrations, reduces body roll, and keeps the wheels in contact with the ground while improving traction and stability.

In this article, we'll take a closer look at the 2000-2005 Ford Excursion coil spring conversion process along with a detailed description and the benefits of doing so, as well as examples from one of our own projects involving a 2000 Ford Excursion Limited.

Why upgrade your Excursion to Coil Spring suspension?

The Ford Excursion is a heavy-duty SUV built to tow and haul heavy loads. However, its suspension system is designed for on-road use and requires more to be suitable for true off-road driving. Upgrading to a later model F250 coil spring suspension can significantly improve its capability and provide several benefits for daily driving, towing, and especially off-road performance. So, when it comes to the 2000-2005 model Excursion, you may want to consider upgrading your suspension to a more robust, battle-tested setup such as the popular later model F250 coil spring conversion, which uses critical components such as radius arm suspension to provide better ride quality, improved steering, and superior ground clearance capability. All that said, here are some of the benefits you get from this upgrade:

  • Improved ride quality: With its advanced coil-spring system, the suspension setup of the F250 offers better control over bumps and vibrations, resulting in superior ride quality and comfort compared to the original suspension of the Excursion.
  • Increased ground clearance: The F250 coil spring suspension provides increased ground clearance compared to the original Excursion suspension, allowing the vehicle to clear obstacles with greater ease and reducing the risk of getting hung up on rocks, roots, or other barriers.
  • Better off-road performance: By utilizing more robust and durable components, the improved stability, traction, and handling of the coil spring system used in the F250 suspension setup provide better off-road performance through increased suspension articulation than the original leaf suspension of the Excursion.
  • More customization options: Upgrading to the F250 coil spring setup provides more customization opportunities for Excursion owners. Also, many aftermarket upgrades are available for the F250 suspension that can improve performance and give greater adjustability.
  • Improved towing capacity: Designed for heavy-duty use, the suspension setup of the F250 is an excellent upgrade for Excursion owners who need to tow heavy loads or trailers, as it can easily result in improved towing capability.
  • Better Turning Radius: The later model F250 has an increased turning radius ability resulting in more agile off road performance and increased ability to fit in stubbornly tight parking spaces.

How to install Coil Springs on your Excursion

Converting a 2000-2005 Ford Excursion to a coil-spring suspension involves:

  • Removing the original suspension.
  • Preparing the frame.
  • Installing the new coil-spring suspension components of the drivetrain and steering system.
  • Aligning and testing the vehicle.

This process significantly improves the Excursion's off-road capabilities and overall on-road and off-road performance. However, it is complex, and we always recommend having the procedure done by a qualified off-road shop.

Here is a basic outline of the Coil conversion:

  • Remove the old suspension system - The first step in upgrading your suspension is to remove the old system by removing the front axle assembly, leaf springs, track bar bracket, and shocks.
  • Next, install a later model F250 coil spring and radius arm suspension system. This system is an improvement over the Excursion's original suspension system because it provides better ride quality and increases the ability of the suspension to articulate and increase traction when going over obstacles or rough terrain, making it more suitable for off-road driving.
  • Upgrade steering components - Upgrading the steering components is also necessary when upgrading the suspension by installing later model f250 steering linkage or upgraded aftermarket linkage such as PMF Suspension or Synergy Suspension and or single/dual stabilizers based on desired usage and tire size. These upgrades improve steering response and reduce the risk of damage to the steering system during off-road driving.
  • Replace the drivetrain components - When upgrading the suspension system, it's also a good idea to upgrade drivetrain components such as axles, differentials, and driveshaft to ensure the entire system is solid and reliable for driving off-road.
  • Install aftermarket parts - Aftermarket parts can also be added to the suspension and steering system to improve performance. These can include longer shocks, adjustable sway bars, and upgraded control arms. Such upgrades can provide even better stability, suspension travel, and ground clearance.

Our very own Excursion Coil Spring Conversion

At Adrenaline Offroad Co., we recently had the opportunity to perform a complete coil spring conversion on a customer's 2000 Ford Excursion. This was an exciting project for us, as we love nothing more than taking on a challenge and seeing the transformation of a vehicle for optimal performance, especially the beloved Ford Excursion.

To begin the project, we started by searching for a donor chassis that would provide us with all the necessary components for the conversion. This makes the process much easier, as it can be time-consuming to source individual parts and, most importantly, save some downtime for our customer. Of course, after some searching, we found a 2007 F250 4wd bare rolling chassis that was a perfect fit for the job.

Once we had the new chassis, we disassembled the donor frame and sent the usable pieces out for blasting. Once everything was cleaned up, we refinished the axle housings and began rebuilding both front and rear differentials with Detroit Truetrac carriers, a new Motivegear master bearing kit, and a 3:73 ring and pinion for each to start fresh from any previous wear.

Next, we shifted focus to the front components and added Ford Motorcraft OEM ball joints to the suspension for optimal performance and a Timken wheel bearing/hub assembly with a set of Warn premium sleek black super-duty locking hubs to provide the extra grip. Of course, this also included replacing all seals and bearings as a precautionary measure, as always.

When it came to stopping power, we added a Power Stop Z-36 Truck and Tow performance brake kit to ensure that the Excursion would stop on a dime. This included drilled and slotted rotors, performance brake pads, and new red powder-coated caliper assemblies with a nice Russell stainless steel brake hose kit as a bonus.

For the actual coils and suspension, we chose to go with Icon dual rate 4.5" lift coils with new F250 05-07 Ford OEM spring retainers/buckets (because the PMF version looked too boxy) and a set of ATS leaf springs with Sulastic shackles in the back to increase rear suspension ride quality.

However, when it came to steering components, we utilized several PMF products (per customer request), including a 2004-16 F250/350 adjustable track bar, 4.5" drop bracket, 05-22 Superduty adjustable link arms, and 05-16 F250/250 heavy-duty (stock height) replacement radius arm mounts.

To assist with steering, we added a PMF 05-22 Superduty HD tie rod bar, PMF 05-22 Superduty single-piece drag link, and PSC Motorsports steering box (due to the variant in the sector shaft spline count and size required by the new suspension geometry and prevent bump steer). Lastly, we installed a PMF dual steering stabilizer bracket paired with Bilstein 5100 series stabilizers to dampen the road impact and smooth the steering.

Finally, when it came to altering the frame, we welded in a custom threaded bung we fabricated to accept the (new) later model PMF track bar bracket. This was necessary due to the curvature of the 99-04 frame configuration and the original track bar bracket mounting being different from the new track bar bracket requirements.

Overall, this project was exciting for both our team and our customer. The transformation of this Ford Excursion was impressive, and our customer was amazed at the increased ride quality and turning radius. At Adrenaline Offroad Co., we constantly strive to push boundaries and attain new levels of performance for our clients, and like on all projects, this project was no different.

Crusty But Unique: 1978 Ford F-250 Super Duper Cab

If you read Barn Finds long enough, you are going to see every type of vehicle under the sun.  That includes the custom ones you never knew existed.  Take for example this 1978 Ford F-250 Super Cab for sale on Craigslist in Moscow Mills, Missouri.  At least we think it started as a Super Cab.  Somewhere down the line, someone decided a Super Cab wasn’t big enough for their tastes and added a set of doors in the back behind the Super Cab.  Was this a homemade job, or did an aftermarket company create these conversions?  Confused yet?  Regardless of this truck’s origin, it is looking for a new home and would be the most distinctive vehicle at your local Cars and Coffee.  That is if it would fit in the parking lot.  If you are skilled in the repair of rust and ring gears, this truck can be yours for a mere $5,000.  Is it worth the cost of admission and restoration, or should this oddity return to the Earth from which it came?  Thanks to Chip S. for the king-sized tip!

The big question on this truck is who converted it?  Was it an individual with a torch, welder, Bondo, and some awesome auto-body skills?  Was it an early conversion by a company like Centurion, who became semi-famous for making four-door Broncos before the Expedition came along?  If I had to guess, this struck started as a rare Crew Cab model with a long bed to give you enough wheelbase to perform the conversion.  Then, the long bed was switched out for a short bed, and a Super Cab was grafted onto or into the Crew Cab body.  Anybody else get a better grasp on how this was done?

Inside, we see that whoever did the custom work would have gone to a minister’s funeral dressed in feathers.  Or this was representative of the late seventies regarding style.  The white carpet and what looks to be white velour seats would preclude this being a truck customized to haul a big crew to work.  That is unless it was a crew of colorblind interior decorators.  One can’t help but be drawn to the partition area.  When was the last time you saw a stainless-steel sink in a truck?  The drive-in movie speaker is a unique touch as well.

A picture of the rear part of the cab shows that the red and white theme carried through to the partial headliner.  The additional map lights are a nice touch, but they may be from J.C. Whitney rather than Ford.  Perhaps they are units from a Lincoln.  From what we can see of the area forward of the door in the rather grainy photograph, the area where the cut was made doesn’t look too bad.  It would be great to have some better pictures to historically document this unique truck, but the seller is interested in cash, not history.

As for the rest of the truck, the ad states that it is powered by a 400 cubic inch V-8 and backed by a four-speed manual transmission.  The seller states that they talked with the builder and that the engine was rebuilt and has around 10,000 miles on it.  Whether that was the builder of the truck, or just the engine is unclear.  Regardless, there is a dead spot on the flywheel where the teeth are ground down causing starting issues.  It does have a new starter and solenoid, but the clutch fork has snapped.  As for the body, the seller tells us that “ Both passenger and driver’s floors and bedsides are crusty .”  However, they report that the mid to rear cab is solid.

It would be interesting to hear reader opinions concerning this truck and your ideas as to who did the conversion and how it was done.  Please put your thoughts in the comments.

A 2 part opinion, let’s get the negative out of the way. In the opening photo, see what appears to be mud caked on the wheels? Sharing the land with cows, brother, that ain’t all mud. Then factor in driving it out of the field, and that “mire” all up in the wheel wells, nice. Disgusting, and in part, why I left a farm setting. No, you don’t get used to it, 2nd, can’t find much on the super DUPER cab, so I’m thinking homemade, and really well done. There are 4 door pickups, but none I found with that center section. I suppose custom van builders could make anything you wanted. I think the sink is a bit much, and better like the smell of , um, country with this one.

I got used to it, grew up on a farm, I never minded wallowing around in cow pies, it’s the smell of money. Always remember, if ya like a nice juicy steak, or big glass of cold milk, you gotta take the bad with the good lol. Farming is the best life there is, wish I still had it

Looks like it was painted in the mid 80’s with “new” Ford paint. My dad bought an ’86 F-350 crew cab used, it wasn’t very old and I was pretty young, but it looked exactly like that paint wise. (Same colors) Every Ford with original paint from that Era has that distinctive missing center color around here.

I worked in Gary Indiana. Maybe 7 or so years ago, I often saw a blue one similar to the truck pictured. It had a ladder rack and was pretty beat up. It’s been at least 5 years since I saw it.

Have owned both a super cab crew cab fords of this vintage, I’d say super cab truck to start, cut back wall and extended it. Used back half from another truck, possibly a crew cab but most likely just some doors. The rear doors seem to be a little narrower than a stock crew cab, so the doors were cut and narrowed slightly. Sitting on standard super cab chassis of 155’’ inches for a 8’ foot box. Cut box to fit. Fact ! a stock ford crew cab , short box truck has a 5 inch shorter wheelbase of 150 inches than a super cab long box truck. ! So this truck was not thought out very well, so probably not a professional build in my opinion. Built in someone’s barn, so start again with something in better shape.

Is it just me? Bad photos, but it looks like they grafted a super cab between a dual cab and a standard cab. The photos seem to show a join on the roof between/after the front doors and the supercab section. If I was to build this frankstien, I’d at least make the 3 windows match.

I believe you’re right. I was originally thinking that they grafted the rear of a crew cab to the back of a super cab truck. When I seen the rusted roof with a seam in front of the super cab section, I just thought “that is odd” as the seam should be in the rear. Thanks for the insight.

I would say it was some coach builder as the bed is shortened for the extra living space. This is likely the same chassis that my rollback of that era rides on just without the dual wheels. This unit has the same driveline as mine. A definite cowboy Caddy here. The seller may even throw in some steer horns with the deal. There have been tons of conversion companies that did limos and things like this. There is likely a plate or tag affixed somewhere as to the conversion. Shipping it is a nightmare so it likely isn’t going anywhere soon. That coupled with the price means this cow patty is likely to dry right where it is. Sad as there is a dump body style at the u-pull-it right now with all the mechanical items needed for this unit. Conversion units like this are a labor of love. If your in flipper mode this is not for you but if you are into different, this is it but it is no money maker, just a money toy or pit. Finally this fellow is no barn stormed. Slow is its middle name but once the mechanicals are straight, consistent falls into place.

I find this truck very interesting, probably because I am just finishing a 73 F-100 , short box. Hopefully, it will be my everyday driver, I think this truck might make a great stable mate. I honestly don’t know what the history might be. The only thing I can remember is the railroads has some vehicles that looked similar to this truck.

Mexico and South America had all kinds of Ford and Chevrolet trucks that weren’t available in the US, personally I have never wanted a 4 door truck. I can deal with the extended cab with the suicide like door but no thanks on 4 doors.

I would guess that it might have been used as a hot shot hauler with a gooseneck hitch in the bed. When I was driving over the road I used to see some outlandish modified trucks hauling boats out of Florida headed up North for the Spring Boat Sale season, usually 3 boats on a gooseneck boat hauler.
