The state of tourism and hospitality 2024

Tourism and hospitality are on a journey of disruption. Shifting source markets and destinations, growing demand for experiential and luxury travel, and innovative business strategies are all combining to dramatically alter the industry landscape. Given this momentous change, it’s important for stakeholders to consider and strategize on four major themes:

• The bulk of travel is close to home. Although international travel might draw headlines, stakeholders shouldn’t neglect the big opportunities in their backyards. Domestic travel still represents the bulk of travel spending, and intraregional tourism is on the rise.
• Consumers increasingly prioritize travel—when it’s on their own terms. Interest in travel is booming, but travelers are no longer content with a one-size-fits-all experience. Individual personalization might not always be practical, but savvy industry players can use segmentation and hypothesis-driven testing to improve their value propositions. Those that fail to articulate target customer segments and adapt their offerings accordingly risk getting left behind.
• The face of luxury travel is changing. Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than any other travel segment today—particularly in Asia. It’s crucial to understand that luxury travelers don’t make up a monolith. Segmenting by age, nationality, and net worth can reveal varied and evolving preferences and behaviors.
• As tourism grows, destinations will need to prepare to mitigate overcrowding. Destinations need to be ready to handle the large tourist flows of tomorrow. Now is the time for stakeholders to plan, develop, and invest in mitigation strategies. Equipped with accurate assessments of carrying capacities and enhanced abilities to gather and analyze data, destinations can improve their transportation and infrastructure, build tourism-ready workforces, and preserve their natural and cultural heritages.

Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024

Global travel is back and buzzing. The amount of travel fell by 75 percent in 2020; however, travel is on its way to a full recovery by the end of 2024. More regional trips, an emerging population of new travelers, and a fresh set of destinations are powering steady spending in tourism.

There’s no doubt that people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go?

We share a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030.

The way we travel now

Which trends are shaping traveler sentiment now? What sorts of journeys do today’s travelers dream about? How much are they willing to spend on their trips? And what should industry stakeholders do to adapt to the traveler psychology of the moment?

To gauge what’s on the minds of present-day travelers, we surveyed more than 5,000 of them. The findings reveal disparate desires, generational divides, and a newly emerging set of traveler archetypes.

Updating perceptions about today’s luxury traveler

Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than for any other segment. This growth is being powered in part by a large and expanding base of aspiring luxury travelers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, many of whom are younger and increasingly willing to spend larger shares of their wealth on upscale travel options. The increase is also a result of rising wealth levels in Asia.

We dug deeper into this ongoing evolution by surveying luxury travelers around the globe about their preferences, plans, and expectations. Some widely held notions about luxury travelers—such as how much money they have, how old they are, and where they come from—could be due for reexamination.

Destination readiness: Preparing for the tourist flows of tomorrow

As global tourism grows, it will be crucial for destinations to be ready. How can the tourism ecosystem prepare to host unprecedented volumes of visitors while managing the challenges that can accompany this success? A large flow of tourists, if not carefully channeled, can encumber infrastructure, harm natural and cultural attractions, and frustrate locals and visitors alike.

Now is the time for tourism stakeholders to combine their thinking and resources to look for better ways to handle the visitor flows of today while properly preparing themselves for the visitor flows of tomorrow. We offer a diagnostic that destinations can use to spot early-warning signs about tourism concentration, along with suggestions for funding mechanisms and strategies to help maximize the benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative impacts.

Six trends shaping new business models in tourism and hospitality

As destinations and source markets have transformed over the past decade, tourism and hospitality companies have evolved, too. Accommodation, home sharing, cruises, and theme parks are among the sectors in which new approaches could present new opportunities. Plane bombings attract intense global media coverage. The dramatic nature of such incidents, often involving high-profile targets and multiple nationalities, ensures widespread attention, which terrorists seek to spread their message and instill fear.

Symbolic Targets and Economic Disruption

Airplanes can represent national power, international connectivity, and technological advancement. Attacking such symbols can be seen as striking at the heart of a nation’s perceived strengths and vulnerabilities.

The aviation industry is crucial to global commerce and tourism. Disrupting air travel can have significant economic repercussions, causing financial losses and creating broader economic instability.

Security and Trust Erosion

Successful attacks on planes can undermine public confidence in aviation security measures. This can lead to increased fear and anxiety about air travel, which terrorists leverage to demonstrate the reach and effectiveness of their tactics.

One of the reasons air travel is so safe is because it is heavily regulated. When any weakness is exploited by those motivated enough to commit murder, uncertainty, distrust, and fear are the result.

Plane bombings can be used to send specific political or ideological messages. By targeting international flights, terrorists can challenge political entities, demand attention to their causes, or retaliate against perceived injustices.

Intimidation, Coercion, and Political and Ideological Messages

Such attacks can be used to intimidate governments and populations, coercing them into changing policies or behaviors. The fear of further attacks can lead to political and social pressure to meet the terrorists’ demands.

For example, the Lockerbie bombing killed people from the U.S., the U.K., Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, the Philippines, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Trinidad and Tobago. Given how many nationalities were represented among those murdered, it’s horrifying but unsurprising that terrorists would target an international flight. And, while the 9/11 attacks focused on domestic U.S. flights, the scope and intensity of the devastation, along with the fact that the U.S. is a global superpower, amplified the terror well beyond U.S. borders.

Refresh for latest …: It may be a stretch, but we could coin a new phrase and call this the cat days of spring. To wit: Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie , which began early overseas release last month, took the No. 1 spot for Hollywood on the domestic, international, and global charts this frame.

The offshore session in 60 markets was  $27.1M , lifting worldwide to $152.2M . The voracious kitty had paws aplenty with overseas markets down just 3% from last weekend. The international box office cume is now $100.7M.

The tabby added such new markets this session as  Poland  with $2.4M, which is 45% higher than  The Secret Life of Pets 2 .  Australia  debuted to  $2M  and  Indonesia  bowed with  $700K , 8% above  Puss In Boots: The Last Wish .

In holdover markets,  Germany  climbed 131% to take over the top slot in its fourth weekend for a local total of $7.6M. The  UK  came back for seconds down just 5% in its sophomore session for a cume of $8.1M.  Mexico  has now preyed upon $19M, which is 9% ahead of the lifetime of  The Secret Life of Pets 2.  Malaysia  jumped up 21% in its second weekend to elevate its cume to $1.5M, the fourth highest total of the year for a Hollywood title in the market.

Still to release markets include France and Japan.

Following its muted debut last session, Warner Bros’ Furiosa : A Mad Max Saga had a $21M international weekend in 77 markets; a good 38% drop from the holdovers but coming off of a low base. The overseas total is now $64.7M for $114.4M global. 

There were some strong holds, including Germany (-4%), Belgium (-24%), France (-26%), Brazil (-27%), Australia (-30%), Korea (-30%), Holland (-32%) and Saudi Arabia (-39%).

Korea is a standout here where the movie is still No. 1 and has grossed $8.2M. Imas has generated $18M global. China, where the movie will release as the first ever of the franchise, is due to join to road race on June 7.

The global total is now $337.1M and the latest installment is the best of the franchise so far in India, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Iraq, Lebanon, Lithuania, Nigeria and Turkey.

Paramount’s IF friended another $11M overseas this session in 69 markets, bringing the John Krasinski film’s worldwide box office total to $138M after its third weekend. The offshore total to date is $57.6M . Here’s a remarkable note: the overseas plays dipped by just 8%.

The film opens next in Japan on June 14, followed by China on June 15.

Global Entry Mobile App Now Available in More Airports

WASHINGTON – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced today that the Global Entry mobile application can now be used at eight additional airports, enabling more trusted travelers to complete their arrival processing on the plane instead of waiting in line to use a portal.  

“CBP has prioritized Global Entry arrival to enhance the speed, accuracy, and security of the arrival process for trusted travelers,” said CBP’s Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy A. Miller. “CBP officers are often the first to welcome trusted travelers when they arrive home, and we want to continue to find ways to improve that experience through new technologies and innovations while maintaining the highest levels of security.”  

Travelers may now use the app at Austin–Bergstrom International Airport, Nashville International Airport, Houston International, Kansas City International Airport, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, San Antonio International Airport, St. Louis Lambert International Airport, and Toledo Express Airport. The app will be available to Trusted Traveler Programs members flying into all 77 U.S. international airports by the end of fiscal year 2024. A list of U.S. airports that currently accept the GE mobile app can be found here . 

The Global Entry app is available to be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and can currently be used at 53 international ports of entry in the United States and all Preclearance locations. Upon landing at any of these airports, Global Entry members can complete their entry processing before leaving the plane, and then bypass the Global Entry portals to speak with a CBP officer.  

Global Entry is one of the Department of Homeland Security’s Trusted Traveler Programs , and is used at land, air, and seaports of entry into the United States at all major airports and all Preclearance airports. All applicants undergo rigorous and recurring background checks and an in-person interview before initial enrollment. To maintain Global Entry members as low-risk travelers, any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges. After months of on-again-off-again haggling, Skydance Media submitted a newly revised offer for Paramount Global . The revised bid would reduce the amount Skydance and its financial partners would pay Shari Redstone, Paramount’s controlling shareholder, and reallocate that more equitably to the company’s nonvoting Class B shareholders, Variety has confirmed. Skydance would also put in more cash upfront to swing the deal, sources said.

Under the previous Skydance offer, Redstone was to have received up to $2 billion for her NAI stake while Skydance was to provide an additional $3 billion cash infusion to the company. Sources did not have details on how much additional upfront cash Skydance is willing to commit or how much of the capital would be reallocated to Paramount Global’s Class B shareholders under the revised offer.

Meanwhile, Sony Pictures and private-equity giant Apollo Global Management emerged as prospective bidders for Paramount Global but have since backed off their $26 billion all-cash offer to buy the entire company, the New York Times  reported . The Sony-Apollo bid would face a number of regulatory hurdles, including requiring a separate ownership structure for CBS’s owned TV stations.

Paramount and Skydance have worked together for more than a decade as partners on “Mission: Impossible” and “Transformers” franchise movies as well as 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Paramount Global’s assets include Paramount Pictures; the CBS network and owned local stations; cable networks including Comedy Central, BET, MTV and Nickelodeon; and the direct-to-streaming business housing Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
